Ever since the first Shark Week back in 1988, Discovery’s annual summertime programming event has continued the tradition of paying homage to the ocean’s deadliest predator. This year’s edition ups the ante with nearly two-dozen new specials. Here are some highlights:
» DANCING WITH SHARKS: Tom Bergeron hosts this underwater dance competition in which five divers battle to put together an amazing aquatic routine with actual sharks as their partners. From hammerheads to tigers, each shark demonstrates its own signature moves. At the end of the show, a winner is crowned — if all the competitors survive, that is. (Sunday at 5 p.m., 8 p.m. & Midnight)
» JAWS VS MEGA CROC: Using data gathered in new experiments, Tristan Guttridge, Rosie Moore and Dr. Sora Kim construct a CGI fight to the death between two of the biggest and baddest apex predators in the water — the great white shark and the ferocious Nile crocodile. (Monday at 6 p.m., 9 p.m. & Midnight)
» HOW TO SURVIVE A SHARK ATTACK: Shark attack survivor Paul de Gelder attempts the unthinkable — getting attacked by a shark for a second time. Under the
supervision of experts, he provokes sharks to chomp on him in multiple scenarios, ripping off prosthetic limbs to teach life-saving tactics for surviving such an encounter. (Tuesday at 6 p.m. & 9 p.m.)
» SURVIVING JAWS: Fifty years ago, Jaws struck fear into millions of moviegoers who vowed never to swim in the ocean again. Marine biologist Tom “Blowfish” Hird and predator ecologist Michelle Jewell dive with great whites to separate fact from fiction, answering such questions as whether skinny dipping actually attracts great whites and if a shark could really chew through the hull of a boat. (Thursday at 5 p.m., 8 p.m. & Midnight)

When is the next season of All American going to be arriving?
A.W., Vancouver
The CW has renewed All American for an eighth season, which will be its last; the sports drama’s final 13 episodes are set to air at some point during the 2025-’26 season. “All American is one of the greatest CW shows of all time and we are honoured to bring it back for one final season to give fans a chance to say a meaningful goodbye to these inspiring characters and this incredible world,” said network president Brad Schwartz. “We cannot wait to see the emotion, heart and magic that [series creator] Nkechi Okoro Carroll and the entire cast and creative team deliver in giving this story the proper ending it deserves.”

I loved Chris Pratt in The Terminal List but don’t recall seeing anything about another season. Any info?
V.C., Ladysmith
The 2022 military thriller will return! The Terminal List is currently filming season two in Toronto, likely in advance of a 2026 release. Pratt is back as James Reece, the former
Navy SEAL, who in season one uncovered a dark conspiracy while investigating the circumstances behind his entire platoon being slaughtered. Before that, however, Pratt will play a supporting role in The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, an eight-episode prequel that focuses on Ben Edwards (played by Friday Night Lights alum Taylor Kitsch), whom Reece killed at the end of season one after discovering his involvement in the fatal ambush that killed his men. Per the synopsis, Dark Wolf follows Edwards “throughout his journey from the Navy
Ann Dowd’s Aunt Lydia will return in a spinoff of The Handmaid’s Tale
SEALs to the clandestine side of CIA Special Operations. The series is an espionage thriller that explores the darker side of warfare and the human cost that comes with it.”
As Kitsch explained, viewers will come to understand the circumstances behind his character’s transformation from SEAL to CIA spook — and what led him to betray Reece. “This is the origin story,” Kitsch told USA Today. “This is the story that gets us to that point. There was so much heat around Edwards with that twist and all these questions about how. You’re going to learn a heck of a lot more about who Ben really is and these twists and turns that led to that decision.”
The Terminal List: Dark Wolf premieres August 27 — and, before you ask, another season is already in the works.
I know The Handmaid’s Tale just ended, but is there any
chance they’ll bring it back as a revival series?
T.K., Burnaby
The acclaimed series based on Margaret Atwood’s novel ended its six-season run in May. While there’s been no talk of a revival (yet, at least), plans are underway for a new spinoff, The Testaments, based on Atwood’s sequel novel of the same name. Set a few years after the events of the first show, The Testaments follows June’s daughter, Hannah (or Agnes, her Gilead-given name), and a new generation of young women as they’re prepared by Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) for the bleak future that awaits them. “Facing the prospect of being married off and living a life of servitude, they will be forced to search for allies, both new and old, to help in their fight for freedom and the life they deserve,” reads the series’ synopsis.
The spinoff will be adapted by original Handmaid’s Tale showrunner Bruce Miller, who stepped away from the original series in 2023 to focus on The Testaments.

I was in high school in North Vancouver when The T.A.M.I. Show hit theatres on the Lower Mainland, and I have never forgotten it. Is it possible to find a copy of this performance somehow?
W.G., Squamish
The T.A.M.I. Show was one of the most highly respected collections of musical entertainers ever put on film, an assembly of performances at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in 1964 that was filmed and released in theatres at the end of that year. An acronym for “Teen Age Music International,” the show combined the top American artists of that era with emerging bands from the British Invasion, including Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, Gerry and the Pacemakers and the first nationally available U.S. appearance by Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones. The concert kicked off with Chuck Berry singing “Sweet Little Sixteen,” and continued with U.S. content from Diana Ross and The Supremes, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, Marvin Gaye, Lesley Gore, and The Beach Boys
The T.A.M.I. Show also marked the first national performance by James Brown and The Famous Flames, who brought down the house (Stones frontman Jagger watched from the wings, and later confessed that he copped numerous dance moves from the Godfather of Soul). Jan and Dean hosted, and sharp-eyed viewers could pick out a young Teri Garr as one of the go-go dancers, and then-studio musician Glen Campbell on guitar in the house band. The concert is available on Blu-Ray and DVD through Amazon.ca

Rising from the humblest of beginnings, this retelling of the life and times of Jesus Christ started out in 2017 on an obscure streaming service called VidAngel. Viewership left something to be desired. Then the pandemic hit, and at a time when the world was in dire need of being uplifted, producers decided to make the show available to all, for free, via their Chosen app. It was nothing if not a fateful decision, as the audience soared — to the point that broadcasters like The CW and streamers like Netflix and Prime Video came calling. Since then, The
Chosen has been spreading its Good Word via just about every platform imaginable.
Case in point: season five is currently unrolling multiple new episodes each week on Prime Video, following a theatrical release in March.
It’s a season that began on July 13, with Jesus’ iconic “Cleansing of the Temple,” and continues this week as the Messiah’s enemies gather, plot and steadily close in. It will end next Sunday with the Last Supper, setting the stage for the Crucifixion in season six — which will also debut in theatres prior to streaming on Prime. Season seven is also already in the works.
allum Woodhouse, best known as Tristan on PBS’s All Creatures Great and Small, heads up a different sort of creature feature with this film, coming directly to horror-themed streaming service Shudder.
Set amidst the Second World War, a British PoW (Woodhouse) and a Japanese soldier (Dean Fujioka) are stranded together on a deserted island after an assault by Allied submarines.
Things are, understandably, tense. But before long it becomes clear the real enemy isn’t wearing a uniform, as the men are stalked by a mythological fish monster called the Orang Ikan that lords over this isle on both land and sea — and is not one to roll out the welcome mat for uninvited guests.
If they hope to survive, these bitter enemies must put aside their differences and start sharpening their harpoons.
As Canterbury cops scramble to take down a gang, an unlikely secret weapon emerges: the police station’s deaf cafeteria worker Alison Woods (Rose Ayling-Ellis), whom the detectives enlist as a lip-reader.

The otherworldly saga of Dream wraps as our antihero must face the lullaby, after killing a member of his own eternal family. Two unlikely partners unite to maintain the balance between society and anarchy when a massive influx of illegal weapons hits the streets in typically gun-free South Korea. One man is a hard-charging ex-military sniper turned cop, the other “a mysterious figure who hides his true motives behind a carefree demeanour.”
Arguably the cinematic triumph of the year, director Ryan Coogler’s Sinners arrived in April and promptly became a mustsee-in-theatres event for audiences across North America — no easy feat in these post-pandemic times when audiences aren’t flocking to the multiplex quite the way they used to. Now, the film is available for all to stream on Crave.
Here, Coogler casts his Creed and Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan in dual roles as Smoke and Stack — identical twin brothers in 1932 who return to their small Mississippi hometown after years away working for the notorious Chicago Outfit. They’re coming back with a whole lotta cash and a dream to start their very own juke joint. Looking to carve out a space for the Black community in the racist Jim Crow South, they enlist the help of a few old friends, including their young cousin Preacher Boy (Miles Caton), an aspiring blues man. Opening night arrives and the place is absolutely pulsing with an electric
energy never seen before around these parts . . . so much so that it attracts something evil and ravenous in the form of Remmick (Jack O’Connell) — an ancient vampire with a taste for blood, souls and songs.
All told, this particular blockbuster is a rich, profound, endlessly surprising genre-bender — with unforgettable action and music aplenty.
Speaking with GQ, Coogler mused: “In some ways, I’ve been trying to make this movie forever, when I look back on it with perspective. But I think really it was about my relationship with my uncle, who passed away while I was working on Creed. He’s from Mississippi and he was my introduction to blues music, and it was all he listened to.”
“I wanted to make a movie that was complicated but decidedly genre,” he continued, “but that still felt honest. And fun to watch . . .” SINNERS
At a certain point in the career of every Saturday Night Live cast member, the time comes to leave the show and make a bid for stardom beyond the surly bonds of Studio 8H.
Among the most successful transitions in the venerable sketch show’s five-decade history is Adam Sandler, a man who’s gone on to become one of the comedy world’s most successful figures — while also showing off his dramatic chops on more than one cinematic occasion. Back in the mid-’90s, one of Sandler’s pivotal star vehicles was a little flick called Happy Gilmore. The down-andout hockey enforcer who finds that his wicked slapshot actually translates quite well to the golf course is among the actor’s most iconic characters — and now, almost 30 years later, he revisits it in a sequel that’s coming straight to Netflix.

conundrum: his daughter’s swanky, pricey ballet school in Vienna. While fan-fave co-stars Carl Weathers and Bob Barker have sadly passed away, original cast member Julie Bowen (late of Modern Family) is back as Happy’s true love, Virginia, as is Christopher McDonald (late of Hacks) as his smarmy nemesis, Shooter McGavin. Plus, watch out for Ben Stiller reprising his part as villainous nursing home attendant Hal, and cameos from real-life golf legends Jon Daly and Jack Nicklaus.
As Sandler teased on The Tonight Show: “People have been asking me for a long time, ‘Do Happy Gilmore 2,’ and I was always like, ‘Nah, I’ll only let you down.’ But then me and my buddy, [original screenwriter] Tim Herlihy, we came up with this idea. We’re really excited about it. We wrote our a**es off. We’re continuing to try to make it a movie that you guys will like.”

SEASON FINALE

Wednesday, Apple TV+
Yes, we’ve got not one but two golf-themed chuckle-fests this week, as Owen Wilson’s first meaningful foray into television prepares to turn in its scorecard. This first season has seen washed-up pro golfer Pryce “Stick” Cahill grappling with unresolved emotions over the death of his son years earlier, while his teen protégé Santi (Peter Dager) fights through open wounds from the emotionally abusive father
who flat-out abandoned him after he stopped playing golf. In the finale, those two inner conflicts collide, as Santi’s old man turns back up, marginalizing Pryce in the process. Dad is all smiles and apologies, but is he really sorry, or just trying to capitalize on his son’s suddenly resurgent career?
In the end, it’ll be up to Pryce to be the father Santi deserves — and the father he himself never got to be.
The coming-of-age adventures conclude with a fourth and final season. Billionaire Máximo Gallardo Ramirez (Eugenio Derbez) relates the closing chapter of his humble beginnings as a pool boy at Las Colinas Resort — while his nephew listens with ebbing and flowing degrees of interest. It’s been a bittersweet (though mostly sweet) saga defined by first love and second chances, and an array of irresistibly offbeat characters.
Per Apple, in this farewell season, “present-day Máximo works tirelessly to restore Las Colinas to its former glory before the grand reopening. In 1986, when a competitor claims the No. 1 spot in the annual ranking of Acapulco’s ‘Best
Hotels,’ young Máximo (Enrique Arrizon) will do whatever it takes to get back on top and secure Las Colinas’ future.”
As producer Sam Laybourne summed up in a chat with ThatHashtagShow: “I would say one of the great things about the show is that we see Maximo as an older gentleman, played by Eugenio Derbez, and he’s looking back on his life. We know certain things have played out in a certain way, but how he got there is the whole mystery of the show. So there’s always opportunities for us to both keep the show incredibly warm and [express] the spirit of the show, which is about going after your dreams and trying to make it.”
For 25 years, Judy Sheindlin was the most notorious judge on TV, dispensing small-claims verdicts to clueless claimants and defendants who were never a match for her sharp tongue and no-nonsense disposition.
Judge Judy ended its iconic daytime run in 2021, but the 82-yearold Sheindlin was far from retired, having jumped straight into several endeavours with streamer Prime Video, including starring in the similarly themed Judy Justice and producing Tribunal Justice. Her latest is Justice on Trial, and it’s something of a departure from the former Manhattan Family Court adjudicator’s usual fare.
As the press release puts it: “Judge Judy Sheindlin is back to put the justice system on trial in a true-crime, high-stakes courtroom drama. The series explores eight landmark cases whose verdicts impact the daily lives of 340 million Americans, as she and her expert legal team recreate the trials from notorious cases where the letter

of the law dictates that ‘justice’ doesn’t always feel ‘just’ . . . In every episode, Judge Sheindlin plays the lower-court judge, while her Tribunal Justice judges Tanya Acker, Patricia DiMango and Adam Levy preside over all appeals-court cases. Rounding out the regular cast are real-life veteran trial lawyers Daniel Mentzer and Larry Bakman. The court trials are mixed with fast-paced reenactments of the crimes and key events that lead to the controversial outcomes.”
Laying out her goals in typically straightforward fashion, Sheindlin explained in a statement: “Judges are people. Sometimes they get it wrong. Then what happens? When and how long will it take to get it right? I’ve put justice on trial. I couldn’t be more proud of this series. Everybody who watches it will come away a little smarter. Mission accomplished.”

As season 10 of the aforementioned Celebrity IOU rolls along, so too does the Scott brothers’ latest series. If you missed this one (and who could blame you, given the truly exorbitant number of shows in Drew and Jonathan’s empire), Chasing the West premiered earlier in July, and finds the B.C.born twins lending their services to people who are looking to start over on a ranch in rustic Texas, Arizona or California.
Here, in addition to their real estate expertise, the brothers introduce their clients to the simple pleasures and harsh realities of life lived at a slower pace, working the land. It also gives them a chance to get back to their own roots.
“We grew up on a ranch in some of the most beautiful country around, and now we’re helping a new generation of people achieve that dream,” said Drew in a release. Added Jonathan: “The lessons we’ve learned and our passion for the ways of the West made us who we are, and we wouldn’t trade it for the world.” On that note, they get to play just as hard as they work, indulging in a little horseback riding, ATVing and lassoing.
In tonight’s episode, the Scotts meet a couple of “city slickers” eager to find a “life beyond their laptops” in a California mining town. They also saddle up to help a horse trainer from Canada start over in Scottsdale, Arizona.

TV Stations regularly promote their shows on their channel, and will refer to show times in their specific time zone. For example, a station that is located in the east may only promote their program in eastern time. Also, sometimes U.S. Stations will promote programs on their affiliate stations that are not available in Canada. These types of promo ads may conflict with the listings in TV Week because we list programs in our Pacific Time Zone on stations available only in our market area. Therefore, please follow the listings in TV Week for correct listings information.

Novelist May Cobb struck gold with The Hunting Wives, her bestseller about Sophie O’Neil, who abandoned a successful but stressful career in Chicago to settle down in a small Texas town with her husband and young son. The perfect life in an idyllic rural community that she envisioned, however, soon gives way to the realization that she misses the action, leaving Sophie feeling bored and restless.
That’s when she meets Margo Banks, an alluring socialite who is part of an elite clique secretly known as the Hunting Wives. Sophie finds herself completely drawn to Margo and swept into her mysterious world of late-night target practice and dangerous partying. As
Sophie’s curiosity gives way to full-blown obsession, she slips farther away from the safety of her family and deeper into this nest of vipers.
The discovery of a dead teenage girl in the very woods where the Hunting Wives meet sends Sophie’s life spiralling out of control as she finds herself smack dab in the centre of a murder investigation.
Starring Pitch Perfect alum Brittany Snow as Sophie and Billions’ Malin Akerman as Margo, The Hunting Wives comes from exec producer Rebecca Cutter (Starz’s Hightown), who serves as showrunner.
Also in the cast is This Is Us alum Chrissy Metz, who plays Starr, a proud working-class mom who’s active in her church. Even though Starr’s daughter, Abby (Madison Wolfe), is dating high school basketball star Brad (George Ferrier of Netflix’s Sweet Tooth), Starr isn’t welcome in the high-society world of the Hunting Wives. This results in clashes with Brad’s mother, Jill (Katie
The Hunting Wives take aim at becoming your next water cooler obsession (L-R):
Lowes of Scandal fame), the wife of a minister and queen of the mega-church who is overly invested in her son’s life.
Brad, however, has some secrets of his own, including his “emotionally incestuous” relationship with his mother, and his clandestine affair with one of his mom’s best friends.
According to Lowes, fans of the book are in for a few surprises along the way.
“I think that people are going to be really surprised at how silky and salacious and sexy this show is.”
“There are a lot of similarities to the book, and then not. But May Cobb — the writer of the book — was on set with us all the time,” Lowes told Us Weekly
“She’s so psyched about it,” Lowes said of the author. “If you read the book, you know it is the perfect greeting ground for just amazing water cooler drama. It’s great.”
The impressive cast also includes Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend’s Wedding) as Margo’s husband, Jed, and Jaime Ray Newman (The Big Cigar) as Callie, wife of the town’s powerful sheriff, and Margo’s secondin-command in the Hunting Wives. Described as being “deeply in love with
Margo,” Callie becomes consumed with jealousy when Margo takes a shine to newcomer Sophie.
Interviewed by MovieWeb, Snow shared her conviction that viewers are going to be sucked into all the twists and turns. “I think that people are going to be really surprised at how silky and salacious and sexy this show is,” she teased. “It’s definitely unlike anything I’ve done before, and it’s stretching me in a way that it’s really cool because my character has the biggest arc in terms of who we think she is and who she turns out to be. Yeah, there’s a lot of scenes in this show. It has such a great cast.” ■
Ablue-chip documentary from the likes of David Attenborough can take up to four years to produce, which means that by the time an animal makes it to the screen, it may no longer exist in the wild. In The Wild Ones, a new docuseries from Apple TV+, camera trap expert Declan Burley, wildlife cinematographer Vianet Djenguet and ex-Royal Marines soldier Aldo Kane demonstrate exactly how hard it is to capture these nearextinct creatures on camera — on a shorter time frame, no less. The result is a show that is more Amazing Race than Blue Planet. “This was absolutely a unique series,” says Djenguet. “It’s like watching that 10-minute sequence at the end of a blue chip.” Which is not to say
that this six-hour “behind-the-scenes” doc has fewer natural wonders to marvel over than your usual wildlife special. “Ultimately we captured world-first footage in six regions around the world — images that have never been seen before or may never be seen again,” says Kane. TV Week caught up with the trio about what they hope to accomplish with this endeavour.
One might think it’s easier to capture guys trying to capture rare animals on film than it is to actually catch a frame of the animal itself. You all somehow manage to do both. How did you accomplish that, and in a shorter timeframe?
KANE: Working in collaboration with people on the ground really helped us. Without the people on the ground, we would not have been able to make this. DJENGUET: You see how we’re engaging with scientists, rangers and
conservationists to support the effort that they’ve already been doing.
KANE: So, the shortened timeframe doesn’t detract at all from the message that we are trying to get across. But it means that the three of us and the small crew were pretty wrung out, bouncing between Mongolia, Armenia and the [African and Asian] jungle. I had a kid in between all of this, and then you’re packing for the jungle, one trip for tigers and you come back and then it’s bears in Mongolia with a different kit, different mindset and different issues to worry about. It was a pretty full-on two years. Hopefully that comes through.
Was there a risk of not getting the featured animal into an episode?
BURLEY: Yeah. I think there was always that risk. You’re always nervous, you know? You’re setting up these cameras, hoping you’ll get the shot. But we
had great people on the ground. They showed us good locations to set up. It is a bit of a numbers game, as well, but I always have faith that you’ll get the shot and that’s why it’s such a relief when you do. When you do get that payoff, it is a crazy feeling.
DJENGUET: Essentially, what the producers and the directors were saying to us was, it’s about the endeavour of getting these images. Showing the endeavour was key because animals are animals. Wildlife, you can’t control. You can’t book a rhino to be there when you’re there.
I feel like we all agree that policy change is what will change the trajectory for these endangered species. How can your show be in service of that?
KANE: I think it’s very difficult to protect and conserve something that you cannot see or have no connection to. That’s
where I think media that has a global reach is key. There’s no point in making a film about saving tigers and then only showing it in the U.K. It requires a platform the size of this to get that message out to the widest demographic, to then allow them to push policy change. Ultimately, it’s a ticking clock. Some of the species that we filmed are on the very, very brink of extinction and something as big as this really does have the power to push and change policy, but also to get people interested. What we want to do is inspire younger people to get out there and start protecting and conserving what we have left on Earth.
DJENGUET: One of the most powerful examples of this is in Mongolia, where we would help the scientists gather footage so they can present it to the government and take it further, to UNESCO, so that the entire landscape can be protected for the Gobi bears. You have less than
Showing the endeavour was key because animals are animals. Wildlife, you can’t control. You can’t book a rhino to be there when you’re there.’’
40 bears left in a massive landscape, twice the size of France. So, taking that evidence to UNESCO will change things for their survival.
How do your skills complement each other?
KANE: This is raw frontline conservation, filmed in the moment. That comes with all the highs and lows that you see in the series. The environments that we worked in had a lot of hazards that needed to be taken into consideration — and not just the animals. You need to build a team that is incredibly effective and has a small footprint. Everyone needs to be able to do two or three different jobs and they need to be the best in the world at what they do. That’s from the scientists and conservationists on the ground to the people filming us trying to find and film the animals. It really is about putting together an elite team of wildlife filmmakers that can operate in extreme environments. Declan, what is wildlife photographers’ beef with camera traps? You seem to get seven months of footage from them.
BURLEY: Most of ’em don’t work, to be honest with you. The jungle is brutal on camera traps. So, we lost a lot of traps out there. It is a lot of legwork. There’s a lot of planning. Some people just don’t like using them. But I always feel that it’s worth it because of the shots you can get with them. So yeah, a lot of people have beef with them, but I’m not one of them.
KANE: Dec, what was your hit rate, you reckon, over the series? You put out 100 cameras. How many delivered?
BURLEY: The little ones, they’re rock solid. They don’t miss a trick. But the ones where you’re trying to create a scene and trying to dive into the bluechip world, they struggled in some of the environments, especially the jungle. But in Mongolia they were great. They worked and that’s why, when we got
that shot of a bear at the scratch rock and then we saw the two bears together, it was just such a powerful moment. I knew how much work went into that setup. We just couldn’t leave that location until the job was done and it’s a massive team effort — you’re just trying to be the ringleader and we’re all tired — so when we actually got that shot, well, if you see my reaction, you know how much it means. ■
Meet the Mitfords (L-R, standing): Nancy (Bessie Carter), Diana (Joanna Vanderham), Tom (Toby Regbo), David (James Purefoy), Sydney (Anna Chancellor) and Unity (Shannon Watson).
L-R, seated: Decca (Zoe Brough), Pamela (Isobel Jesper Jones) and Deborah (Orla Hill).
In real life, the Mitford sisters were something of a marvel. The six daughters of English aristocrat David Freeman-Mitford, 2nd Baron Redesdale (James Purefoy), hailed from the same privileged background, but their extreme ideological differences, fuelled by the First World War and a looming Second

World War, would eventually tear them apart — as well as make them notorious. Outrageous, the dramatized version of the Mitford sisters’ lives, is told through
The outlandish antics of the socialite Mitford sisters roiled British high society in the 1930s, and their story comes to the screen in new miniseries OUTRAGEOUS
the eyes of eldest daughter Nancy (Bridgerton alum Bessie Carter). A novelist since the early 1930s — who would eventually be appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for her contributions to English literature — Nancy introduces viewers to seemingly level-headed Pamela (Isobel
Jesper Jones), manipulative Diana (Joanna Vanderham), Hitler-obsessed Unity (Shannon Watson), Communist Decca (Zoe Brough) and Deborah (Orla Hill), who eventually would come to run one of Britain’s most successful stately homes. As young women, these six are as close as can be. “The arc of series one is the breakdown of specific sisterly relationships,” explains Vanderham. “Nancy and Diana go from sharing a bed in episode one to not being able to be in the same room together, and that is because of their politics.”
Examining a family fractured by partisan worldviews seems more topical than ever in 2025. For the cast, the similarities between 1930s England and the world we live in today sometimes felt frightening. “They always say history rhymes,” says Brough. “I think in this show it really rings true. Looking at when this was set, nearly 100 years ago, there are so many issues that are prevalent in
today’s society. It was astounding for us, while we were on set filming the show and looking at the outside world, that not a lot has changed, in many aspects.”
How the girls land in opposing sociopolitical corners is largely dependent on their personalities, human relations and strong convictions. “Unity had zero self-doubt,” says Watson. “She managed to persuade her parents to allow her to go to Germany. They obviously saw what she started getting into, when she started talking about fascism, and that was quite a big thing
for them, to allow her to go. But it was the only thing that excited her and pulled her out of her teenage saltiness.” For Unity, the pursuit does not end well. “She just was not a well-informed person,” says Watson. “She was very naïve to everything she was about to pursue.”
Though less rabid in her beliefs, sister Diana uses her
powers of persuasion to get exactly what she wants. “It’s almost effortless for her — she didn’t manipulate, she just sort of suggested as if it was the only option. I really wanted to bring that into my performance,” says Vanderham. “Her Achilles heel was her love for [fascist leader] Oswald Mosley [played here by Joshua Sasse]. She sacrificed a hell of a lot for him, and she put her life in danger because of her love for him. She gave up relationships with her sisters and ultimately took on some very controversial political views because of her love for him.”
Diana and Unity were not the only Mitfords sacrificing sisterly bonds for their principles. “Decca looked at the wider picture of life and found that things were going on that she wanted to do something about,” says Brough. “But I found it quite sad that she stopped speaking to her sisters because of their political extremes.
“Looking at when this was set, nearly 100 years ago, there are so many issues that are prevalent in today’s society. It was astounding for us, while we were on set lming the show and looking at the outside world, that not a lot has changed, in many aspects.”
I think it resulted in quite a sad life in many aspects. I think, for all the sisters, it was a massive void in their life; being so close with each other for such a long time and suddenly breaking that off and
never seeing each other again.” Adds Vanderham: “I think that’s why it feels like such an important show because it’s trying to say, ‘Keep having those conversations with your loved ones. Don’t let them go.’”
The way Outrageous tackles differences within a family unit feels remarkably contemporary despite the near-hundred years that have passed since the Mitfords formed the political alliances that would make family dinners awkward. “The way that it’s been shot — the cinematography, the music design, the editing — has been inspired by the pace with which these women thought,” says Vanderham. “Their intelligence and their wit and their humour informs the whole tone of the show.” The actress believes the tone and pace they have adapted for the series might even draw in those that normally eschew period dramas. “People love period dramas because it does allow you to take a look at humanity and how we live and the choices that we make, but from a feeling of being removed from it. But I do think that this show, you’re not going to feel removed. You’re going to feel in it and like you’re with them.” ■

Esi Edugyan’s work resonates. By envisioning a 1960s-era Ghanaian civil servant who birthed an African-American settlement in Alberta’s Amber Valley after he inherited land in her debut novel
The Second Life of Samuel Tyne, Edugyan paved the way for the breadth of humanity she would go on to cover in her later works.
Fourteen years later, the Calgary native’s literary world expanded beyond that of her own home province as the epic tale led from Barbados to Nova Scotia and along the Underground Railroad to a new life. Hailed by Kirkus Reviews as “a thoughtful, boldly imagined ripsnorter that broadens inventive possibilities for the antebellum novel,” Washington Black — the name of the character and his story — now becomes a television series.
The story of George Washington Black’s life is a harrowing one, described by the Library Journal as “a life so circumscribed that he’s not even allowed to end it.”
Ernest Kingsley Junior as Washington Black, a slave on the fraught path to freedom.
Beginning in 1830s Barbados, viewers are introduced to their protagonist Washington Black (Ernest Kingsley Junior, War of the Worlds), also known simply as “Wash,” an 11-yearold boy born and raised on a sugar plantation and quite literally dying for freedom at his young age.
saga.
When he meets the estate owner’s nephew, Christopher “Titch” Wilde (Lucifer’s Tom Ellis), a sudden traumatic incident forces Wash to flee his imposed routine of hard labour and he seeks both adventure and education by way of his new connections. For a decade, Wash accepts all the luck, generosity and kindness bestowed upon him, but even years later as he looks back upon the events of his life, Wash wonders why, of all the slaves on Titch’s uncle’s plantation, he was selected to lead a free and fulfilling life.
“As he navigates uncharted lands and impossible odds,” the show’s official description reads, “Wash finds the courage to imagine a future beyond the confines of society.”
Led by co-showrunners Selwyn Seyfu Hinds (The Twilight Zone) and first-time producer Kimberly Ann Harrison, Washington Black also counts This Is Us star Sterling K. Brown among its many executive producers. Interviews to promote the show clearly illustrate Brown’s pride to be a part of the series behind the scenes, although the Emmy winner hopes his onscreen role as Medwin Harris also inspires “belief and hope for modern audiences” (per USA Today).
As the “de facto mayor” of Halifax’s Black community, Harris “relishes his role in creating community, knowing that there is safety in numbers,” Brown said, adding that “through his relationship with this young man, he learns that being safe and being free aren’t necessarily the same thing. And while he tries to teach Wash what is necessary to survive, Wash winds up showing him what it means to truly live.”
Washington Black is a comingof-age story, sure, but it is also so much more than that. Through sweeping vistas of 19th-century agrarian Barbados, up to Norfolk, Virginia — courtesy of a makeshift hot-air balloon — and into Canada, Wash meets with Arctic explorers, fellow inventors and newly freed former slaves looking to start lives
and careers of their own. Wash’s experiences speak to the importance of representation and, more than anything else, to the resilience and strength of the human spirit.
“Washington Black inspires me,” Brown told BlackFilmandTV.com. “This young man and the adventure he undertakes remind me of how the power of imagination and the creativity of artistry can transform the world in which we live. Selwyn Seyfu Hinds has taken the transcendent words of Esi Edugyan and created a spectacular universe that brings to fruition the power of possibility.”
Hinds added: “The world has felt like we’re living in darkest night, stumbling to find and hold onto a North Star to make a way forward. Like many of us, I’ve felt lost far too often. But writing Washington Black these past two years has guided me back home. This story of a young Black boy who becomes a globe-trotting artist, scientist and inventor. This tale of the true human superpowers: hope, love, empathy, persistence. Those ideas have been my North Star. The promise that we will get through the long night and take flight like Wash under the light of the sun. This show has been a conduit to that faith for those of us who’ve been creating it, and we’re beyond thrilled to be about the business of sharing it with all of you.” ■

QWhat is it about Twenty Thousand Leagues, and Jules Verne, that keep on resonating 150 years later?
AI suppose there’s a connection to the natural world as well as a fantastical journey. It’s sci-fi, but it’s grounded in reality . . . He was writing so many years before about these incredible inventions [that didn’t yet exist]. He’s just a very insightful and fascinating writer.
QHow will Nautilus surprise diehard fans of the book and previous films?
AWell, I don’t think we’ve seen [Nemo’s] origin story this way. In all those other versions, he’s pretty much a mystery. You don’t know who he is or why he’s reached this point. We’ve got a bit of free reign to tell this story — and it’s a full-on revenge story. Yes, it’s in the vein of a Pirates of the Caribbean; it’s got that kind of fun adventure thing. But in reality, he’s going: “I’m going to get back at the horrible, horrible things that the East India Company did.” They killed his wife and child. So, it’s a very dark heart to this story . . . It’s showing what we haven’t seen before. Why is he so mysterious? When you read Mysterious Island [Verne’s 1874 followup], why is he like this? Why is he so angry? Is he a villain? Is he not? Let’s look into that.
QHow does your version of Nemo evolve during this epic voyage?
A I think he’s got a burning rage inside of him. We’re watching a guy who’s hell-bent on doing anything he can and taking risks and putting people in danger
Born and theatrically trained in London, Shazad Latif got his start on stage before popping up in U.K. TV hits like spy thriller Spooks and theatre satire Toast of London From there, he jumped across the pond as Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde on Penny Dreadful and Starfleet officer/undercover Klingon Ash Tyler on Star Trek: Discovery
to get what he needs, which is revenge. And I think, by the end, we’re watching someone who learns that you need the people around you and you need to be vulnerable. You have to open yourself up.
It’s not just about giving orders, it’s about becoming a family . . . At first, he finds it very easy to just shout and expect things to be done. Because in his head, it’s like, “I know I’m right. I’m very clever. We might die. By the way, I’ve got a mission I need to do. Just do what I’m bloody telling you.” But I think he learns as it goes on that he can’t treat people that way. He has to compromise and learn to work with a team and explain himself a bit more . . . because he’s so shrouded in secrecy for the first half that no one knows what the hell he’s doing or where he’s from or why he’s doing what he’s doing.
QAs an actor trying to get into Verne mode, how helpful was it to walk onto that amazing, practical set every day?
CURRENT GIG: Nautilus, the latest reimagining of Jules Verne’s 1870 page-turner Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas, finds Latif putting his spin on Captain Nemo, a prisoner who revolts against Britain’s ruthless East India Company. Commandeering the first-ofits-kind submarine he himself designed, Nemo sets sail for adventure . . . and revenge.
AObviously, there’s loads of CGI [throughout the show]. I thought there was going to be more in terms of the sets, but when we had a full-on working submarine on a jib which moved us about, and you could walk from one part of it to the other, and we had the upstairs and the downstairs, it was pretty incredible . . . It does feel like you’re in a submarine. It just puts you in that world for the day.
Q
How does the Nautilus as a ship embody its creator? How are the man and the machine one and the same?
AHe’s almost binded to it by this emotional core of . . . I mean, he’s got his daughter’s toy, this little nautilus shell, on [the wheel of the vessel]. So, it’s very much a part of him. The front of the ship is a huge, sharp pole that cuts things, which sort of mirrors Nemo’s stubbornness . . . But it also shows his genius; it’s a pretty incredible piece of machinery. So, he’s a mad, stubborn genius, basically [laughs].
They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
