July 15, 1985 will forever be remembered in the annals of rock history, when the world’s top musicians gathered for an epic benefit concert to raise money for African famine relief. Dubbed Live Aid, the 16-hour show was the brainchild of British musicians Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, with performances taking place at London’s Wembley Stadium and John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, broadcast live to a worldwife audience of 2 billion viewers in more than 100 countries.
A who’s who of rock royalty participated, including Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, U2, Sting, Madonna, The Who, Mick Jagger dueting with Tina Turner, Neil Young, Elton John, Phil Collins (who played at both stadiums, jetting on the Concorde) and Queen, with frontman Freddie Mercury delivering the performance of his life. Twenty years later, a 2005 follow-up show — Live 8 — continued the tradition, with the two shows ultimately raising billions of dollars.
In celebration of the 40th anniversary of Live Aid, this four-part docuseries — a collaboration between BBC and CNN — examines the concerts’ impact on music, politics and global awareness during the 20-year span between the two shows.
Boasting six-and-a-half hours of extended highlights from the original Live Aid, the series also features a wealth of never-beforeseen backstage footage.
“Our team worked tirelessly to bring together rare interviews and behind-thescenes insights, uncovering the untold stories of an event that reshaped global aid and offering a fresh perspective on its lasting influence on music and politics,” said producer Tanya Shaw. “The series takes the audience on an irresistible and entertaining ride through the 40 years since the biggest live concert ever was shown on TV,” added BBC exec Emma Hindley

Just hoping for some update on Étoile?
R.B., Vancouver
Creator Amy Sherman-Palladino followup to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has, unfortunately, been cancelled by Prime Video after just one season. The dramedy about American and Parisian ballet companies (led by Luke Kirby and Charlotte Gainsbourg) who collaborate on a transcontinental venture to stay afloat during tough times debuted in April to mixed reviews. And despite being given a two-season order from Prime right out of the gate, Étoile has been cancelled after its debut performance. This marks the second ballet series from Sherman-Palladino that was cancelled prematurely, following
We really adored the last season of The White Lotus. Is it going to come back?
E.N., Victoria
One of HBO’s most-buzzed series has, indeed, been renewed for a fourth excursion . . . in fact, it was renewed before season three even debuted this past February! That said, there are no details yet on where the Emmymagnet anthology series about the existential crises endured by guests and staff at
luxury vacation resorts around the world might be jetting off to next. Speculation has it that creator Mike White is looking to get away from sun and sand in favour of frostier climes. No release date has been announced either, but look for it in late 2026 or early 2027.
That said, Mr. White will, himself, be in a vacation destination in spring of 2026, when the writer-director appears on CBS reality competition Survivor, which is currently filming season 50 in Fiji. This will, in fact, be the second time White has done that particular social
experiment. He previously appeared back in 2018, finishing in second place . . . in addition to popping up on multiple seasons of fellow CBS reality battle The Amazing Race. He’s clearly a showman of many talents!
Is the show Time Bandits still going? Even though it was a kid thing, it was really clever, and we quite enjoyed it . . . especially Lisa Kudrow. Best thing she’s done in years!
J.G., Burnaby The Apple TV+ adventure series that found Friends breakout Kudrow leading a ragtag group of time travellers on witty, educational adventures has, alas, been cancelled after just one season.
But we do have at least a little good news for Kudrow fans: the actress will return to another of her iconic (albeit largely underappreciated)
roles sometime in 2026: HBO’s The Comeback. Originally debuting in 2005, when Kudrow was hot off her careerlaunching turn on Friends, the edgy showbiz satire cast her as Valerie Cherish, a washed-up sitcom star trying to claw her way back to the top of the B-list. It was a one-anddone affair, but quickly built a reputation as a cancelledbefore-its-time cult classic, leading to a revival in 2014 . . . which also lasted for just a single season. Now comes a third resurrection, which is also being billed by HBO as the show’s farewell (for now).
Exactly what this new iteration will entail for Valerie is unclear, but we do know that original creator Michael Patrick King (of And Just Like That . . . fame) is onboard alongside Kudrow.
In a joint statement released with the news of The Comeback ’s comeback, King and Kudrow quipped: “Valerie Cherish has found her way back to the current television landscape. Neither of us are surprised she did.”

With summer here and good beach days still to come, I treated my teenage grandchildren to my DVD collection of Beach Party movies, which were always the hit of the season in the ’60s. The kids hated them! I remember dwelling on every word, and loving every character. Were the movies successful back then? My young “critics” think they are completely lame. V.F., New Westminster
AThe Beach Party flicks are considered a genre unto themselves. The plots were always very similar, featuring fun-loving teens in a summer setting as the protagonists, going up against adult antagonists (but not their parents) who saw these youths as at best troublemakers, and at worst delinquents.
The actors most closely associated with the Beach Party films included Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello, Jody McCrea and John Ashley, who all starred in the original Beach Party in 1963, followed by Muscle Beach Party, Bikini Beach, Pajama Party and so on.
Other, less youthful co-stars included the great Don Rickles, who appeared in four of the films, comic Morey Amsterdam in two, and legendary movie monster Boris Karloff, also in two. Others who appeared as one-offs included Vincent Price, Bob Cummings, Mickey Rooney and Eve Arden. Financially, these very-cheap-to-produce movies were quite successful at the box office. But by 1968, the genre had pretty much run its course due to a shift in the pop-cultural climes.

Captain Christopher Pike and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise enter year three of their fiveyear mission to seek out new life and new civilizations, blasting off with two new episodes on Thursday.
When the intergalactic derring-do resumes, our heroes are still reeling from their encounter with the villainous Gorn at the end of last season. Those brutal reptiles will continue to be a major threat this year, even as Pike et al. encounter a foe that will test their “grit and resolve” like never before. But it’s not all doom and gloom on the horizon. Per the press release, season
three “takes characters both new and beloved to new heights, and dives into thrilling adventures of faith, duty, romance, comedy and mystery, with varying genres never before seen on any other Star Trek.”
Speaking of those “beloved characters,” after debuting in the season-two finale, Martin Quinn joins the cast full-time as iconic chief engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott. And, after popping up intermittently during seasons one and two, The Vampire Diaries’ Paul Wesley will return in what’s expected to be an expanded role as Pike’s heir apparent, James T. Kirk.
The soapy yet sweet teen melodrama based on the bestselling novels of Jenny Han returns for a third and, alas, final season.
The saga of Belly Conklin (Lola Tung) and her evolving relationship with the studly Fisher boys (Gavin Casalegno, Christopher Briney) and her own sense of self will wrap with 11 episodes, two of which debut this Wednesday, followed by one per week through September 17.
Per Prime Video’s synopsis of this farewell chapter: “It’s the end of her junior year of college, and Belly’s looking forward to another summer in Cousins with her soulmate, Jeremiah. Her future seems set, until some core-shaking events bring her first love Conrad back into her life. Now on the brink of adulthood, Belly finds herself at a crossroads and must decide which brother has her heart. Summer will never be the same . . .”

Indie-film auteur Nacho Vigalondo (Colossal ) takes his offbeat sensibilities to TV with this six-part bio-series about one-of-a-kind Spanish pop star Tamara (Ingrid García-Jonsson), whose unlikely rise to fame in the early 2000s was defined by joy, scandal and strangerthan-fiction calamity.
One of the most-adapted authors in the history of pop culture, Stephen King has seldom been absent from our shelves or our screens. Since the publication of his very first novel Carrie back in 1974, the “master of horror” has been prolific, to say the least. Yet he’s commendably never gotten stuck in a creative rut — forever evolving, finding new ways to shock and amuse readers even five decades deep in his career.
In fact, one of his most acclaimed tales of terror was just unleashed in 2019. The Institute follows Luke, a kid with a genius-level I.Q. and telekinetic abilities who, after his parents are murdered in a brutal assault, wakes up in a facility alongside similarly gifted and afflicted youngsters. They’re all at the mercy of the Nurse Ratchedesque Mrs. Sigsby and her staff — a group determined to study and extract their powers by any means necessary. Unfortunately, that involves an array of “experiments” . . . more accurately described as torture. Meanwhile, a
troubled cop named Tim Jamieson, on the run from unspeakable trauma, unwittingly puts himself on a collision course with this so-called Institute.
Young newcomer Joe Freeman plays Luke, while Weeds alum MaryLouise Parker is the dastardly Mrs. Sigsby, and The Punisher ’s Ben Barnes plays reluctant hero Tim.
Behind the scenes, Justified’s Benjamin Cavell serves as showrunner, alongside director and exec producer Jack Bender, a key creative voice on Lost, Alias and fellow Stephen King adaptation Mr. Mercedes (which, not coincidentally, co-starred the aforementioned Mary-Louise Parker).
The thriller will premiere with two episodes this Sunday on MGM+. If you’re unfamiliar with that particular streamer, note that in Canada it is only available as an add-on service for subscribers of Amazon’s Prime Video.
Upon launching its very own streaming service back in 2019, Apple made the savvy move of anchoring its catalogue of original series and films with a franchise that’s been bringing joy to the hearts and tickles to the ribs of television viewers for five decades now. Which is to say, they purchased the rights to Charles M. Shulz’s Peanuts — becoming the exclusive home of any and all creations inspired by Charlie Brown and his hilariously, painfully relatable pals.
In recent years, many pundits have bemoaned the fact that Hollywood’s reliance on franchise filmmaking has led to a dearth of “original” ideas, saturating the multiplex and our TV screens with sequel upon sequel and reboot upon reboot. But in this case, the sudden influx of content featuring the Peanuts gang has been nothing short of a welcome addition to that oh-so-rare corner of the pop-culture landscape that was underexplored rather than overexposed.
More than a few of these new
Peanuts cartoons have, naturally, centred on the franchise’s MVP — Charlie Brown’s gracefully silent pooch, Snoopy. On Friday, we get another such misadventure.
Featuring songs from longtime Peanuts composer Jeff Morrow and pop star Ben Folds, this tuneful one-off special will “celebrate the joy and magic of summer camp and the importance of preserving what you love . . . Charlie Brown loves camp and is determined to make his final year special, but Sally, a first-time camper, is nervous and skeptical of the new and unfamiliar place. While everyone settles in . . . Snoopy and Woodstock discover a treasure map that takes them on a wild adventure nearby.”
Alas, they all learn that the joint will soon be shut down, as fewer and fewer people share their affinity for camp life.

Wednesday, 8 p.m., BET
Just a few short weeks after launching new spinoff Divorced Sistas on streamer BET+, the O.G. cable channel brings us the latest season of the mothership series. producers, “promises even more emotional depth, unexpected revelations and the powerful narratives that have made the show a fan favourite.” Getting a tad more specific, things between Andi and Robin reach a possible breaking point, as the latter may just be on the verge of walking out. Elsewhere, Danni’s lawsuit threatens her relationship with Tony, and Gary’s investigation yields some shocking revelations.
friend and collaborator of such comedy magnates as Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, Zarna Garg continues her rise up the standup ranks with a new special. Filmed at Bimbo’s 365 Club in San Francisco, this hour of absurdity finds Garg riffing on “husbands, kids, in-laws . . . and anyone who dares question an Indian mom’s wisdom.”
The latter topic is a bit ironic, given that before she was selling out theatres, Garg was a stay-at-home mother-of-three who was starting to feel a little lost . . . until one of her precocious kids noticed her razor-sharp wit and made a suggestion. “On a whim, my daughter’s like, ‘Mom, just do your standup comedy,’
the funnywoman reflected in a 2023 interview with CBC. “And I was like, ‘That’s not a job.’ And she’s like, ‘No, people get paid to tell jokes!’ I’m like, ‘What do you know?’ That’s a mother’s predisposition. Any time a kid says something, you’re like, ‘You don’t know anything! Please go back to your Kumon workbooks.’”
But she took the advice and the rest, as they say, is hilarity. “It doesn’t matter when you find your calling,” Garg told CBC. “If you find your calling two days before you die, it’s still a victory — you still found it. Like, when you see a rose, you don’t look at it and think, ‘Oh, it’s so beautiful, but it bloomed late in life.’ No one cares. You found it. And that’s what matters.”

On that note, it’s worth mentioning that this show is a spinoff of fellow reality romp Queens Court, which centred on a trio of Black female celebs. The new iteration will, like the previous one, be hosted by actress Holly Robinson Peete (21 Jump Street) and her husband Rodney. “I will say that I like the twist, because they felt like brothers,” said Holly in an interview with Bravo. “They felt like little brothers to me. They got along really well. They are three completely different men. They’re so open to being vulnerable and talking about love out loud. I just really found that very, very attractive. During a chat with Richtopia a few years ago, Lemonis opened up about his general philosophy for wheeling and dealing — what he looks for in a partner, and perhaps more crucially what he looks to avoid: “I don’t like businesses that purely and simply are in it just for the economics. I don’t like entrepreneurs who do what they do just for the money. In this latest iteration, Dexter makes his way to New York City in search of Harrison. However, his former colleague Angel Batista (David Zayas) has received a tip that Dexter is still alive, and may be responsible for the Bay Harbour Butcher murders in Miami all those years earlier. Angel, who is now captain of homicide with the Miami Metro Police, heads to the Big Apple in order to bring him to justice.
“The integrity and heart in Batista has just gotten stronger, and life experience along with new revelations have made him that much more focused on the task at hand,” said Zayas. “It felt amazing to go back to this character after so many years — especially with all the new information that he’s learned. We have the best crew working on this show and working with everyone again reminded me why this show is so special,” says Zayas.
As loyal viewers will recall, Angel has long suspected the truth about Dexter, so will he finally confront what he might have missed in this revival? “I feel there is no other option but to confront the absolute truth of what he has missed after so many years,” explains Zayas. “How he manifests that information is part of the exciting season that the viewers will share with Batista.”
Also returning is Dex’s late father, Harry Morgan (once again played by James Remar), who taught him to channel his “dark passenger” to vigilante justice, harnessing his compulsion to kill by murdering only those who truly have it coming. As he did previously, Harry continues to serve as Dex’s Jiminy Cricket, offering advice and counsel from the great beyond
Angel isn’t the only one who seeking out Dexter in NYC. Eccentric billionaire Leon Prater (Game of Thrones alum Peter Dinklage) has taken a macabre interest in serial killers, and has his head of security, Charley (Uma Thurman), extend an invitation to Dexter to visit his manor.
When he arrives, Dex realizes he’s not the only killer on Prater’s list, with a literal murderers row assembled for a grim salon: Lowell (How I Met Your Mother’s Neil Patrick Harris), Gareth (David Dastmalchian, Oppenheimer), Al (Eric Stonestreet of Modern Family) and Mia (Krysten Ritter, Orphan Black: Echoes) have assembled at the manor, all seemingly unrepentant serial murderers living far enough below the radar to be there to meet the fabled killer of killers.
Also back from the dead in guest roles, reviving characters from the original series, are John Lithgow as Arthur Mitchell, a.k.a. the Trinity Killer; Jimmy Smits as Miguel Prado, the assistant district attorney with a dark secret; and Erik King as Det. James Doakes, long thought to be the Bay Harbour Butcher.
For Hall, the opportunity to slip back into his most iconic role was impossible to resist. “It’s a special thing to be onto something that continues to give you something back,” he says. “Ultimately, any misgivings were overwhelmed by relishing the idea of him rising from his self-imposed ashes.”
As for whether Resurrection will be a limited single season, Hall says he’s open to the possibility of something longer term. “The thinking is not to come back for a sort of self-contained one-off again, but leave it open to further exploration,” Hall added. “The intention, and hope, is that the story will continue beyond this.” ■
Sunday, 6 p.m. & 10 p.m., WTVS; 9 p.m., KCTS
As the most recent actor to don the liturgical garments in the small English town of Grantchester, actor Rishi Nair recognizes that a murder a week feels like a high concentration of death in one geographical location. Wouldn’t one leave after the third person dies? “After the second person,” laughs Nair, noting, “I mean, the house prices would be really cheap.” But anyone who has seen even a fraction of a season of the cozy crime drama knows that murder is just an excuse to dig deeper into feelings that might otherwise be hard to express. We recently sat down with Nair to discuss the emotional arcs of vicar Alphy Kottaram, D.I. Geordie Keating (Robson Green) and friends in the 10th season of Grantchester.
Now that you have settled into Grantchester, what have you come to love about the genre?
It’s a very cozy drama. And it’s one of those shows that you can watch with your grandparents, your parents, your kids. I don’t think there’s many of those anymore. The amount of shows that seem cool, and I’m watching it with my parents when I go over, and suddenly there’s a scene where I’m like, ‘God, get me out of this room.
I can’t watch this with my parents!’ [Laughs] So I really enjoy that I can watch it with my family comfortably.
It also deals with racism, sexism, alcoholism — a lot of isms — in the kindest ways.
It’s a real testament to Daisy [Coulam], the writer and an exec producer on the show. Her writing’s so brilliant that she touches on these subjects, like you said, racism and classism, but in a very light way. It never feels heavy and it never feels like it’s [shoved] down your throat. And there is lot of comedy in there as well, when these themes are being explored, which is really cool.
Was season 10, having established Alphy as a character, easier for you? It felt like he was coming back home. I felt this real sense of familiarity with it, and I think that’s because all the people — the cast that have been there for so long — felt like a family. When I joined, they took me in and made me one of theirs, and I immediately felt part of that family. The same thing goes for the crew, a lot of the crew are the same people that come back. I think that’s a great testament to the show, that people are coming back because they really enjoy working on it. So, what happens is that we all come back and it’s like Christmas all over again with the family.
The trailer makes the season look very dramatic for Alphy. What is the overall arc that Alphy goes through? In season nine we saw Alphy come in and he’s all charming, whereas in season 10 we go a bit more inwards with Alphy, and we see the cracks in the paper. There are secrets that he has, that will slowly unravel. And I think a lot of the things that we learned about him in season nine maybe aren’t entirely true. Maybe he’s kept some things hidden. I think it’s much more of an emotional rollercoaster for Alphy
in this one. And there’s a little bit more struggle for him in that.
We’re also promised some romance. Who is this woman we meet and is Alphy ready for love?
Yeah, that’s a real big question over the season, and Alphy doesn’t know whether he’s ready for love, to be honest. I don’t think he knows himself. He has a lot going on and what he finds out affects his romantic relationship, so it gives him the push to solve those issues – because he realizes it’s not only affecting his relationship with
Meg (Christie Russell-Brown), but also his relationship with Geordie and other characters in the show. At the beginning of the season, there’s this joke that Geordie has — his nickname for Alphy is ‘The Good Reverend Love Him or Leave Him,’ which implies that Alphy has been having a bit of fun, let’s say. And he says to Geordie, ‘Actually I want to find someone.’ And he meets Meg, who is a librarian, and he falls for her in a way that he hasn’t fallen for anyone else. There are really lovely scenes between Alphy and Meg and it’s kind of a ‘will they won’t they.’ But
“It’s a very cozy drama. And it’s one of those shows that you can watch with your grandparents, your parents, your kids. I don’t think there’s many of those anymore.”
there’s a lot Alphy has to deal with, so whether he’s even ready for that will remain to be seen.
How would you describe the relationship between Alphy and Geordie in Season 10?
Age-wise, it could very easily be a fatherson relationship, but I don’t think they are. They’re much more two friends. In season nine we explored that they are a lot more similar than they both thought they were. And in season 10 that carries on. What’s really lovely in season 10 is that there’s so many scenes between Geordie and Alphy where they really open up to each other. And I think that’s quite rare to see between two men, especially in the ’60s. But they really trust one another and they feel like they can open up and they both give great advice. Whether they actually take that and go with it is something else. But it’s a beautiful friendship.
Leonard (Al Weaver) features heavily this season. What is he struggling with?
Leonard’s going through a lot. Something happens in his personal life that he bottles up and that leads to him derailing and turning to alcohol. And something happens in an episode where Leonard gets arrested and there’s a really beautiful scene in the police station where it’s the three of them; Leonard, Geordie and Alphy, it’s just three blokes
opening up. I remember when I read it in the script, it was pages and it never ended, but I was so engrossed in it. It was so beautiful because each person had their moment, and by opening up really helped the other two with their issues.
What purpose do you see murder serving on the show? In this village people are dropping like flies.
What I love about Grantchester is that every episode is essentially a new story. It’s one of those shows that, if you missed episode four, you could watch episode five. Obviously, there is a linear story going on with all the main characters, but the main storyline is new. I don’t know what it is with murder, I mean, I guess we as humans are kind of obsessed with that. Whenever I read a new script, I’m always like, I need to make a guess who it’s going to be. And nine times out 10, I’m
wrong. It kind of takes me back to when I was a kid and I used to play Clue. I guess Grantchester is like an onscreen version of that.
In terms of tonal differences between your previous work and this one, what is it like to go through the motions of Grantchester?
It’s really lovely. Alphy’s such a great character. And every day is so different. On the surface it seems like a light show, but there are so many darker themes in there, and I really enjoy the variety. Some days are tougher than others because you’re going quite deep and heavy and other days it’s just me and Dickens for the whole day and I’m just having the time of my life. ■
Change is in the air throughout the third season of lavish period drama The Gilded Age
Sunday, 8 p.m. & 11:40 p.m., HBO Canada
hen we last left The Gilded Age, we were in the throes of the Opera War, which ended without bloodshed and with the Russell family at the height of New York society. Now, Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) has set her sights on a manoeuvre that would elevate her
family to unimaginable heights while her husband George (Morgan Spector) is risking everything on a gambit that could revolutionize the railroad industry. Thematically, the entire season deals with power. “Who’s in charge in society, who’s in charge of marriages, who has the power?” ponders series co-writer and executive producer Sonja Warfield. “I think the power shift is relevant to all the stories and all the characters.”
Across the street at the Brook household, life was thrown into chaos as Ada Brook Forte (Cynthia Nixon) inherited her late husband’s fortune and is ostensibly in charge while sister Agnes (Christine Baranski) has found her social standing altered. “I’m rather fascinated by people who

Left: Ada (Cynthia Nixon) and sister Agnes (Christine Baranski) experience a change in the power dynamic with their relationship.
pretend that the loss of money and loss of position doesn’t affect them at all, and everything can just go on as it did before,” says series creator Julian Fellowes. “Here we have Agnes, whose belief in the essentially European concept of greatness by birth can’t be shifted. She starts out confident that everything will be as normal. But we know it won’t.”
But while the financial reins sit in Ada’s hands, Fellowes believes much power remains with her sister. “Agnes knows the real issue of the day is whether or not women will get the vote. And that compared to that, everything else is not even secondary — it’s a long way in the distance. The women who change things are the Agneses,” he says. For Baranski, her stern character’s progressive thinking became clear from the way she advocated for former secretary Peggy Scott (Denée Benton). “She recognized that this incredibly articulate, bright woman walks into the house and takes her on and supports her,” says Baranski.
Now a writer, Peggy’s independence and resolve become both an attraction and a hindrance when she meets romantic interest Dr. William Kirkland, played by Jordan Donica. With chatter of a spinoff for Peggy, Benton will only say that she is happy in her character’s shoes. “Getting to be a part of what has become one of the most unique parts of our show will be a legacy that I will be soaking in for the rest of my career as an artist,” she says. “I’m getting to embody something really important and I would want to know
more and see exactly what the Scotts go on to do.”
For Donica, the experience of joining the historical drama has been a learning experience, from a research point of view rather than fitting in, which the musical actor says felt seamless. “I’ve done a lot of period pieces in France, and so I’ve known a lot about African history globally, but I never really looked at African American history beyond what we’re taught in school,” he says. “To realize that there were free Africans here has been such an educational experience. I’m excited because hopefully it gives people today language to be able to have tough conversations [about issues] that are still affecting our Black community today.”
Struggling with powerlessness of a different kind is Gladys Russell (Taissa Farmiga), who becomes her mother’s instrument to ascend even higher on the social ladder — a decision that puts Bertha at odds with her husband. “The rift that develops between them
is not a minor one and what is being expressed through that disagreement are the same shared values and ambitions that brought them together in the first place. They really see the situation of Gladys’ marriage in a fundamentally different way,” says Spector. But Coon stands by Bertha’s motivations. “George can’t really understand the stakes for a woman,” she says. “He doesn’t understand our instinct for survival, which is, in this case, through marriage, and that Bertha really believes what she’s doing is an existential question. She wants her daughter to be safe. She also wants her to be fulfilled and have a sense of purpose, because she’s hungry for her daughter to have a kind of power she didn’t have.”
“I’m rather fascinated by people who pretend that the loss of money and loss of position doesn’t affect them at all, and everything can just go on as it did before.”
As the cast explores political and social strife in the 19th century, Baranski can’t help but point out the positive ways Agnes has bled into her private life. “I try to speak now in declarative sentences,” she says. “This is a woman I always call a walking declarative sentence. She says what she means, whether you agree with her or not. She has the courage to just say, ‘This is the fact, this is how I feel,’ and she doesn’t spend a lot of time apologizing for it, which I think is a lesson for all women. We tend to qualify or say, ‘I’m so sorry, but this is how I feel but I understand . . .’ That’s not Agnes. She says, ‘I don’t particularly like that outfit you’re wearing.’ I think that’s a lovely lesson from Aunt Agnes.” ■

National parks are a hot topic right now in the United States. With the news that more than 1,000 National Parks Service (NPS) employees were laid off in early 2025 during federal government cutbacks, discussions circling public safety, maintenance and park operating hours have been more plentiful and more public than ever before. As a result, American national parks are now less equipped to handle the injuries, missing persons cases and occasional deaths that do inevitably occur on wild, uninhabited land.
Yosemite National Park, situated in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains, has typically hosted more than four million visitors per year; of those visitors, an estimated 12 to 15 deaths occur each year in Yosemite.
Netflix’s new limited series Untamed focuses on just one, telling the story of a young woman’s death in the park. Unlike most fatalities in the park, this one is not accidental. What follows is a trek deep into the woods of Yosemite in search of a killer who has a better grasp of the untamed land than nearly anyone else.
“Untamed is a character-driven mystery thriller that follows Kyle Turner (Eric Bana), a special agent in an elite branch of the National Parks Service
who works to enforce human law in nature’s vast wilderness,” notes the series synopsis. “The investigation of a brutal death sends Turner on a collision course with the dark secrets within the park, and in his own past.”
The leading ISB agent is not alone in his quest through the rough terrain, however. Turner is joined by budding Los Angeles-born park ranger Naya Vasquez (Lily Santiago of La Brea), who is “more
accustomed to city life than to the wilds of Yosemite” (per Tudum). New to the wilderness herself and lacking experience in the field due to her youth, Vasquez is somewhat of an audience surrogate, charged with introducing viewers to the dangers and beauty of the California park.
“Because Vasquez is new to the park, we get to see the park through her eyes,” co-showrunner Elle Smith tells Tudum. “We get to understand what this job is,
“Everyone thinks of Yosemite as this beautiful place with all the vistas and all the scenery, but we were trying to touch on the dangers that are just beyond that.”
and see the beauty of the park, but also the dangers.”
Smith’s co-showrunner (and father) Mark L. Smith reiterates that aspect of the park. “Everyone thinks of Yosemite as this beautiful place with all the vistas and all the scenery,” he says, “but we were trying to touch on the dangers that are just beyond that. I love stripping all the cheats away, stripping [away] all the more modern tools that people can use. It really gets down to the character and what they can find within themselves.”
One character in the series who has been very well acquainted with the park throughout his career is Paul Souter. Played by Sam Neill, Tudum reports that Souter has “been the chief park ranger in Yosemite for half his life,” noting that the aging professional has clearly found a rhythm in a job he enjoys. Further
described as “a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend to Turner,” Souter cuts a sympathetic character in Untamed.
Rosemarie DeWitt and Wilson Bethel also star as Jill Bodwin and Shane Maguire, respectively. While Bodwin’s presence as Turner’s ex-wife helps to provide some personal background to the lead’s otherwise cool and brooding character, Maguire, a former army ranger, supplies added force and protection where necessary, given his military background and penchant for seclusion.
Over the course of the six-episode limited series, Bana’s Kyle Turner hunts for a killer, one who knows Yosemite National Park as well as he does. However, the dark secrets lurking in both Kyle’s past and that of the park itself may prove to be just as dangerous as the murderer. ■

QThe kitchen is a new arena for you. How exactly did this project arise?
AWell, it’s probably been in the works since I was about eight or nine years old — watching Ben Johnson in Seoul run in those Summer Games. And I’m like, “I’m from that guy’s country!” Becoming consciously aware of what the Olympics was, where I lived in the world and this idea of Canadian pride. I’ve been the beneficiary of a great deal of support from this country. Trying to give back, or celebrate it, and have people be as excited about something that was either a birthright or something that they’ve earned by immigrating to Canada is what I’ll do until the day I die.
And so, where this show stemmed from was wanting to highlight what’s made in Canada, who’s making it, how we’re making it . . . shining a spotlight on Canadian brands, their iconic stories — and through that mechanism of showing people how food is created and the brand that’s doing it and their story, maybe creating that inspiration to make the choice with their dollar to buy Canadian and stock that pantry with maple leaf from tip to tail.
QThis show was in development before the current international turmoil. Is it strange how timely it now all feels?
AWell, the international stage really was the catalyst for us to be able to launch and be received with this idea while it was there percolating. We couldn’t have asked for a better catalyst to have
Jon Montgomery first made his mark on our home and native land at the 2010 Olympics in B.C. when, after winning gold in the skeleton, he downed a pitcher of beer while fans serenaded him with O Canada. Since retiring, the pride of Russell, Manitoba, has kept his competitive edge as host of The Amazing Race Canada
people clamour to be a part of it. And while some things are unpleasant, they can give us strength and rigidity. When you break a bone, it heals back stronger. While we might have been insulted by some rhetoric, and while there will be pain in certain areas, others are developing, growing . . . I think, in terms of our connectedness as Canadians, we were given a gift, honestly — and it’s not to play down the financial turmoil that is being caused in some areas of the market. But the byproduct . . . I don’t think since 2010 have we felt this Canadian connectedness from our brothers and sisters from coast to coast to coast.
QThe nature of being an elite athlete is you have to “retire” in your 30s or 40s. What was that transition like for you?
AMy story is maybe a little different than most . . . but I think it’s also perspective. And it might be easy for me to say, because
Jon just fired the starter’s pistol on season 11 of Amazing Race, but you can also find him hosting YouTube docuseries Savour the North, which — in these times of tariffs and attacks on our sovereignty — celebrates homegrown food brands and kitchen culture.
I did have something to transition into. But I was always super-grateful. If you can play any sport . . . most folks aren’t making a dollar. For me to be able to do sport was just the perpetual delay of reality — which is, “I’m gonna have to get a job and join the real world at some point.” I’m pretty sure, 35 years young, tobogganing in a spandex onesie is about the ultimate delay of reality that one could hope for. So, when my tobogganing career did come to an end, I wasn’t bitter. I didn’t call it “retirement.” I was quitting the thing that I loved to do, and now it was about joining the real world.
And I always say yes to an opportunity that’s outside my comfort zone because I know that there’ll be two outcomes: 1) I can have a level of success I can be proud of, and 2) I can get a really valuable lesson through falling short of that goal. The only time I’ll be a loser is if I don’t take the lesson. But any other outcome is a “W” in my mind.
