What’s On THIS WEEK!

King of the Hill

It’s been 15 years since the exploits of Hank, Peggy and Bobby Hill concluded. Now, King of the Hill creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels reunite for a new season of the beloved animated comedy, with Hank and Peggy returning to Arlen after years in Saudi Arabia only to discover that their small Texas town has not been immune to change — much to the annoyance of Hank, who finds himself endlessly irked by things that aren’t the way they used to be. pg 5

The Pickup

Eddie Murphy’s comeback keeps rolling on with his latest — a comedy flick in which he and fellow SNL alum Pete Davidson star as two armoured truck drivers who get jacked by a mysterious criminal (Keke Palmer), only to discover she’s got leverage over them that forces the duo to help her pull a daring heist. pg 58

Chief of War

A labour of love for star, producer and co-creator Jason Momoa, this series casts the erstwhile Aquaman as Kaʻiana, a reluctant warrior who plays a key role when the island kingdoms of Hawai‘i clash over unification and colonization. pg 55

SEASON PREMIERE

Hank &

return in revival

The comedy canon of Mike Judge is as eclectic as it is impressive, including cartoon hit Beavis and Butt-Head, live-action features Office Space and Idiocracy (which, these days, could be mistaken for a documentary) and HBO’s Silicon Valley

However, it’s fair to say that Judge’s most beloved creation has been King of the Hill, the animated sitcom focusing on Texas propane purveyor Hank Hill, wife Peggy and son Bobby. After enjoying a 13-season run that concluded a decade-and-a-half ago, Judge and series co-creator Greg Daniels (who went on to The Office, Parks and Recreation and other series) are gifting fans with a 14th season, streaming on Disney+.

This new iteration of King of the Hill is marking the passage of time, with Hank (voiced by Judge) and wife Peggy (Kathy Najimy) returning to Arlen following several years spent in Saudi Arabia, where Hank worked a propane job in order to build up a retirement nest egg. “Where it clicked for me was when we started talking about aging the characters,” Judge said during a panel at the ATX Television Festival. “Because it’s such a grounded, realistic show, it just felt right that they would be older.”

In that vein, Bobby (Pamela Adlon) is all grown up, employed as a sushi chef. Also returning are the Hills’ neighbours, Bill Dauterive (Stephen Root), Boomhauer (Judge) and conspiracy-loving Dale Gribble (the latter now played by Toby Huss after the recent death of voice actor Johnny Hardwick, while Laotian neighbour Kahn, who’d been voiced by Huss, is now played by Ronny Chieng). As Judge explained, Hank is irked by the changes Arlen has undergone during his absence. “He comes back and there’s a bike lane and a scooter lane,” the creator mused. “He’s looking at all the stuff that’s happened in the last 15 years, and there’s a whole world of things that would annoy Hank.”

ABSOLUTELY KILLIN’ IT!

Is Murderbot getting a new season . . . or not?

J.F., North Vancouver

The saga of SecUnit and his hapless humans will continue, as Apple TV+ has just renewed its quirky sci-fi hit. Adapted by brothers Chris and Paul Weitz from author Martha Wells’ All Systems Red, season one debuted in May, casting Alexander Skarsgård as a sardonic cyborg who, while plotting an escape from the company that enslaves him, bonds with the team of pacifist scientists he’s assigned to protect. The finale saw those scientists liberating SecUnit, then saying goodbye as he set off to wander the galaxy. Where that will take him, who knows! But there are six more novels in Wells’ Murderbot Diaries from which to draw.

The intergalactic misadventures of Alexander Skarsgård’s SecUnit (a.k.a. Murderbot) have been greenlit for season two at Apple TV+.

Creator/star Seth Green in a promo shot for

Chicken’s 200th-episode spectacular circa 2020.

CHICKEN-ING OUT?

We just read your article on that Robot Chicken “special.” But when will we get another actual season?

G.M., Burnaby

Possibly never! In a recent interview with The Wrap to promote the show’s 20th-anniversary special, Self-Discovery (which aired July 20), co-creator/star Seth Green expressed doubt that his stop-motion Adult Swim extravaganza would ever return for a full season. The culprit?

The 2022 purchase of parent company Warner Bros. by Discovery, and the resulting change in corporate strategy.

“The special came about because Discovery Media bought Warner Bros. and all its subsidiaries, which trickled all the way down to Adult Swim,” Green told The Wrap. “So, there was a shift — not just in the volume of global workforce that were employed, but also the priorities of any of these smaller subsidiaries at the behest of these much larger companies. All that to say, no one was greenlighting a new season of 20 quarter-hours. It’s

Robot

Madison Lintz as rookie cop Maddie Bosch in Prime Video’s Bosch: Legacy, which just ended its run after three pulse-pounding seasons.

just not happening. Everyone who would have said yes to us got fired and consolidated into a much smaller pinpoint on the graph.”

A passion project of Green and his pal Matthew Senreich, Robot Chicken debuted in February 2005, winning six Emmys during its run. The show’s last full season aired, perhaps not coincidentally, the year of the merger: 2022.

WALKIN’ A NEW BEAT?

Loved that Bosch spinoff Ballard, but I was hoping, with all the cameos, to see Maddie. Season two, maybe?

K.H., Coquitlam First off, let’s just hope that Prime Video does, indeed, renew Ballard for a second season. Because that call has yet to be made — and we absolutely need to know what’s become of Det. Renée Ballard (Maggie Q) after a finale cliffhanger that saw the LAPD cold case boss carted away

in handcuffs for a murder she didn’t commit.

As for whether young cop Maddie Bosch (Madison Lintz) might join a cavalcade of season-one guest spots that included DA Honey Chandler (Mimi Rogers), Det. J. Edgar (Jamie Hector) and Maddie’s dad Harry (Titus Welliver), we’ll just have to wait and see.

That said, Lintz is set to don a badge again soon in a whole other L.A.-set police thriller, having signed on to star in and produce Eve Ronin. Based on Lee Goldberg’s novels, the show (which has yet to secure a network) will follow a Hollywood sheriff’s deputy whose arrest of an abusive movie star turns into a viral sensation and lands her a job as the force’s youngest homicide detective. Said the actress in a statement: “Eve’s determination, complexity and resilience make her a dream role . . .”

Lintz previously recurred on all seven seasons of Bosch (2014-2021) before co-headlining three seasons of recently cancelled spinoff Bosch: Legacy (2022-2025).

It seems almost every big movie that comes along now is a sequel. My favourite film to this very day is Back to the Future, with Michael J. Fox. There are three of these movies, but no more. Can we expect sequels anytime soon?

A seminal film in Hollywood history, Back to the Future launched the career of future Forrest Gump and Cast Away director Robert Zemeckis in 1985 — supported by his friend, mentor and producer Steven Spielberg. Zemeckis and writing partner Bob Gale stayed on for two more DeLorean-powered trips through the ages, shot back-to-back and released in 1989 and 1990, respectively. All three were financially successful and adored by audiences. The script for the original is even used in the syllabus at USC’s elite film school as an example of the “perfect screenplay.”

The reason we haven’t seen anything beyond 1990’s Part III is simple. In an interview circa 2015, Bob Gale stated that the creators had no interest in continuing, and that there would be no sequels or reboots as long as he and Zemeckis were still alive.

Fun fact: when Burnaby’s own Michael J. Fox was playing teen time traveller Marty McFly in the first Back to the Future, it was mostly night work — as in “working all night,” because he still had his day job on sitcom Family Ties. Fox, of course, was brought in as a replacement for original star Eric Stoltz (of Mask fame), with whom Zemeckis and co. actually filmed for several weeks before deciding it just wasn’t working out. Another future superstar who auditioned for the part? Johnny Depp.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood is, like its predecessor, set in 18th-century Scotland, where Jamie’s eventual mom Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) and dad Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy)

are inching their way towards a fateful coupling when they suddenly cross paths with Claire’s eventual parents, Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine). The latter lovebirds met during the First World War and were thought to have died in a car crash in 1910 — yet it turns out were actually sent on a time trip of their own via the same magic stones of Craigh na Dun that will one day whisk their daughter away to her destiny.

Note that while the original Outlander remains on W Network in Canada, this spinoff will air on Starz.

Meanwhile, the release of a “salacious” new book rattles Mrs. Astor.

Past Imperfect

The homegrown sci-fi anthology returns with season three, introducing viewers to another traumatized protagonist who’s given an unexpected chance to skip back in time and change the past.

Abigail Walker (Painkiller alum Carolina Bartczak) is a popular morning show host who devotes her show — and her whole life, really — to championing issues like women’s rights. Her hard-charging approach has led to a lot of professional success and breakthroughs for her chosen causes, but it’s also split her family apart. She’s separated from her husband Nick (The Porter’s Arnold Pinnock), who now lives a few doors down the street with his new partner. And her teen daughter Lucy (newcomer Arianna Shannon) is buckling under the weight of her perfect mom’s expectations and overbearing parenting.

Then one day, Abigail comes home to find Lucy has downed a bottle of pills and taken her own life. Devastated, she spends the next few

days stumbling around in a haze of pain, shock and guilt, wondering how she could have prevented this tragedy that she still can’t quite bring herself to accept. Acceptance becomes all the more difficult when a former talk show guest approaches her with the card for a service called Plan B — which she claims could bring Lucy back. Skeptical at first, Abbie can’t help but call. That’s when the show’s now-iconic van, with its bleach-blonde twin drivers, rolls up and Abigail is suddenly, miraculously reliving the hours leading up to her daughter’s suicide.

Yet as with every season of creator Jean-François Asselin’s mind-bending character study, our heroine finds that redeeming past sins isn’t so simple — and every “solution” just creates another problem for her loved ones. In the end, Abigail must confront some hard truths about herself before she can “save” anyone else.

Hot Comedies

Friends to the End

Hot off earning a slew of Emmy nominations for Hollywood satire The Studio, B.C.’s own Seth Rogen returns for season two of his other Apple TV+ series. For the uninitiated, Platonic tracks the charmingly messy saga of man-child beer brewer Will (Rogen) and lawyer turned stay-at-home mom Sylvia (Rose Byrne) — two estranged best pals who reconnect in their 40s, swiftly becoming thick as thieves again in a way that reinvigorates both of their lives . . . while causing utter chaos for just about everyone else.

As the new season opens, Will seems to finally have his act together, prepping to tie the knot with his girlfriend Jenna (Rachel Rosenbloom). And given her new career as an event planner, who better than Sylvia to bring their holy matrimony to fruition? But, if you’ll recall, the conflict that drove Will and Sylvia apart years ago was her disapproval of his first wife . . . and as we see in Wednesday’s premiere, it’s not long before some fresh friction arises between Will’s bride and his

best friend. Worse yet? It turns out Will himself may not be ready to take the plunge again, leading to serious complications for not only his personal life but his professional one, given that Jenna is also his boss at restaurant mega-chain Johnny 66. Meanwhile, Sylvia’s husband Charlie (Luke Macfarlane) chases his longtime dream of competing on Jeopardy! — with truly unexpected, life-altering results.

On that note, keep an eye out for Jeopardy! host Ken Jennings in a cameo, while other season-two guest stars include Saturday Night Live greats Beck Bennett, Kyle Mooney and Aidy Bryant. All told, Platonic remains a light yet thoughtful riff on the complexities of friendship, anchored by the chemistry between its two leads — and, in particular, an indelible performance from the endlessly versatile, irresistibly goofy Ms. Byrne.

fter teaming up on the 2024 Beetlejuice sequel, director Tim Burton and star Jenna Ortega return to the spooky Netflix series that first brought them together: Addams Family spinoff Wednesday. Debuting in 2022, season one saw teen outcast Wednesday Addams enrol at Nevermore Academy, where she stumbled into a murder mystery tied to sins from the magical school’s past. As co-creator Miles Millar teased to Tudum: “Nothing is what it seems in season two. Wednesday goes into this season thinking she knows Nevermore. It’s the first time she’s returned to a school willingly. But as soon as she gets back, nothing happens that she’s expecting. She

thinks she’s going to be in control, that she knows where all the bodies are buried . . . and she doesn’t.”

After popping up occasionally in season one, the rest of the Addams clan will have a larger role this semester, including mum Morticia (Catherine ZetaJones), dad Gomez (Luis Guzmán) and the illustrious arrival of Grandmama, played by Absolutely Fabulous’ Joanna Lumley. “The world that they’ve created here, it looks sensational,” Lumley gushed in a chat with Tudum. “It’s gothic, sometimes quite bonechilling, but it’s kind of playful.”

The first four episodes premiere this Wednesday, followed by four more on Wednesday, September 3.

RISING TO THE CHALLENGE

This genre-defining reality battle began all the way back in 1998, called, at the time, Road Rules: All Stars — an off-the-wall competition designed to stoke the growing rivalry between casts from MTV’s Road Rules and The Real World. Over the next 27 years, a lot changed. For one, the title — since season 19, it’s been known as The Challenge. For another, the platform — which is now streamer Paramount+. And finally, in recent instalments, reality TV stars from all different channels have been invited to test their mettle in activities like staying awake all night while standing on an exceptionally narrow pillar, or dropping crates from helicopters with pinpoint accuracy. (Not to mention impromptu fistfights and spitting matches galore!)

Season 41, which debuted last week, looks to change the game yet again. As Paramount’s synopsis teases: “For 40 seasons, generations of battle-hardened Veterans have fought relentlessly for the ultimate prize: the title of Challenge Champion. This season, fresh faces and new

To win, Veterans and New Threats will be forced to work together . . . unless they’re forced to turn on each other. Nothing is guaranteed.”

The 32 competitors will include fan-faves from Big Brother, Love Island, Are You the One?, Survivor, The Amazing Race, Married at First Sight, Ex on the Beach and one alumnus from our very own Canada’s Ultimate Challenge. Plus, a boxer and a wrestler.

Their first challenge comes via the “world’s funniest baseball team,” the viral-sensation Savannah Bananas. Naturally, it’s a fruit-themed affair that begins with a hectic sales day and ends in a truly shocking elimination.

The weeks to come will

subject our competitors to “no-mercy judging from guest chefs Kardea Brown and Rodney Scott in Charleston, South Carolina; a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to dash around Darlington Raceway and cook for NASCAR’s Mamba Smith and Todd Gilliland; and a secret surveillance challenge in Newport News, Virginia.” That leads to a high-octane finale in which “the top two teams compete in a sales frenzy to feed the sailors of a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier in port at Naval Station Norfolk.”

average age of 85, most Hibakusha were children when the bombs hit, and their personal accounts are combined with archival footage to tell the stories of this vanishing group, the only people to have survived the horrors of a nuclear assault.

DIGGING UP HISTORY

The first season of this series made global headlines with the dazzling discoveries made while excavating the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, which vanished beneath the lava of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.

Returning for a second excursion, the story is told through the drama of the dig and stylized fresco-inspired animations, illustrating how a thriving city was destroyed by a powerful volcanic eruption. The debut episode — titled “House of Treasures” — features new revelations as the biggest archaeological endeavour in Pompeii for a generation reaches its climax with even more stunning discoveries, including a pair of perfectly intact pearl earrings, several elaborate mosaics and a private spa.

Viewer Tip Regarding Promotional Ads on TV

TV Stations regularly promote their shows on their channel, and will refer to show times in their specific time zone. For example, a station that is located in the east may only promote their program in eastern time. Also, sometimes U.S. Stations will promote programs on their affiliate stations that are not available in Canada. These types of promo ads may conflict with the listings in TV Week because we list programs in our Pacific Time Zone on stations available only in our market area. Therefore, please follow the listings in TV Week for correct listings information.

New owner Eva Longoria works with Mexico’s Club Necaxa to turn things around for the struggling soccer team

SOCCER SALVATION

NECAXA

Thursday, 6 p.m. & 7 p.m. (repeating at 8 p.m. & 9 p.m.), FXX Canada

Welcome to Wrexham has become an awardwinning hit, chronicling the efforts of actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac (formerly known as Rob McElhenney before just recently undergoing a legal name change) using their Hollywood magic to reverse the fortune of Welsh soccer team AFC Wrexham. With production on that show’s fifth season underway, its makers are bringing fans a new series with a similar theme: Necaxa, in which Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria sets out to reignite the soul of one of Mexico’s oldest and most storied football franchises, Club Necaxa.

“Necaxa is a gripping bilingual docuseries chronicling a turbulent, transformational time marked by staff shakeups, career-defining injuries and the relentless grit of a football team determined to defy expectations and deliver hope to its city of Aguascalientes, Mexico,” teases the synopsis. “Once a powerhouse in Mexican football, Club Necaxa has spent decades navigating instability including relocations and nearconstant reinvention. Though its legacy has flickered in and out of the national spotlight, a passionate core of diehard supporters continues to believe, clinging to the dream that their beloved ‘Los Rayos’ will one day rise again.”

As a new investor in the team, Longoria — a.k.a. “La Patrona” — has plenty of enthusiasm and fresh ideas to bring to the table. She’s not alone, however; the team’s other new co-owners are Reynolds and Mac, and in the series opener she calls on the duo to bring their experience to the fabled Mexican team as its future hangs in the balance.

Also in the mix are sports director José “Pepe” Hanan and coach Eduardo Fentanes, who are cheered on by a new generation of supporters as they guide the team through the Leagues Cup while attempting to defy expectations and prove the skeptics wrong. “Necaxa

brings viewers onto the training pitch and into the locker room as Los Rayos and their supporters chase a playoff dream and hope that lightning can, in fact, strike again,” the synopsis adds. “A portrait of faith, resilience and the enduring power of hope, Necaxa dives into the lives and dreams of the people who surround the team. Will Club Necaxa make it, or will they lose another season and the hearts of Aguascalientes once and for all?”

Of course, there’s also a lot of synergy behind the scenes, with Longoria, Reynolds and Mac all serving as executive producers. “Rob and Ryan helped Wrexham AFC become one of the greatest sports stories of our time and what has happened in Wrexham, Wales, is truly magical,” said FX Entertainment president Nick Grad in a statement. “With Eva Longoria, they’re now teaming to support the dreams and aspirations of the Necaxa fans and Aguascalientes community too.”

Meanwhile, Longoria wants viewers to understand she’s no dilettante, but a longtime soccer aficionado with a keen understanding of just how seriously Mexican fans take their beloved sport. “Football in Mexico is sacred,” she says. “I’m coming here to invest in one of the clubs with a great history and legacy. I’m afraid to mess it up.” That said, she’s also realistic about how far the team has to come in order to achieve the lofty dreams she’s set for Club Necaxa. “We’re not at the level we’d like to be,” she admits, but adds, “If we’re down here, we can only go up, right?” ■

STAR JENSEN ACKLES TALKS

EMBRACING HIS INNER ’80S ACTION HERO WITH COUNTDOWN

LAPD Det. Mark Meachum offrs Supernatural alum Jensen Ackles a chance to fulfil his action hero dreams.

Plucky cop Mark Meachum (Jensen Ackles) fihts and fumbles his way through an undercover op.

Since the beginning of his career, Ackles has been quite successful in manifesting his action hero destiny. He spent 15 seasons fighting the undead on The CW’s Supernatural, from there going on to portray foul-mouthed superhero Soldier Boy on Prime Video’s The Boys. When Derek Haas, creator of Chicagos Fire, Med, P.D. and Justice, was looking to return to his early-aughts thriller roots à la 2 Fast 2 Furious and Wanted with a series about an interagency task force unravelling a dark conspiracy that could destroy the city of Los Angeles, it felt like kismet to the actor. “It was the love for that kind of action, that kind of character, that kind of storytelling, that really propelled what we ended up doing,” says Ackles. “It’s been a thrill-ride.”

COUNTDOWN

Wednesday, Prime Video

ensen Ackles’ love for action flicks stems from early childhood. The 47-year-old Texan was raised in the golden age of high-octane motion pictures where one man could — and would — save the day.

“That’s what I grew up idolizing,” he says.

“Those were the characters that I grew up going, ‘That’s what I want to do. I want to be Riggs in Lethal Weapon. I want to be McClane in Die Hard. I want to be Indiana Jones in the trilogy . . . well, I guess it’s more than a trilogy now [laughs].”

Law enforcement veteran Nathan Blythe (Eric Dane) has pulled together a crack team of misfits to prevent a nuclear disaster . . . yet his reasons for choosing these particular agents is a mystery to everyone but him.

“It was the love for that kind of action, that kind of character, that kind of storytelling, that really propelled what we ended up doing. It’s been a thrill-ride.”

a good person, but you’re also on the floor because you’re laughing so hard,” the creator reflects. “He’s got, of course, the leading man look. But on top of that, he’s just a genuine, thoughtful, caring, intelligent human. I was hoping that we could take what I knew from hanging out with him and infuse Mark Meachum with that energy. I knew the audience would be along for the ride.”

Rough-and-tumble DEA agent Amber Oliveras (Jessica Camacho) is, like Meachum, a lone wolf who

doesn’t tend to play well with partners.

For Haas, there was no one more appropriate to channel the likes of Bruce Willis and Mel Gibson in the role of reluctant hero Det. Mark Meachum, a man known equally for his skill and reckless risk-taking. “I don’t think there’s an ’80s action movie that you couldn’t have put Jensen in, if he was born two decades [earlier],” says Haas. But there were other qualities the actor possessed that Haas really wanted to add to the character. “If you’ve spent five minutes with Jensen Ackles, you’re drawn in because he’s such

In Mark Meachum, Ackles sought the opportunity to carve out a character who was both a revelation to him and his most tenacious fans.

“I played a character [in Supernatural’s Dean Winchester] for quite a while, so not falling back into that familiarity was something that was on my mind. I wanted to make Mark his own character,” the actor explains. “It was something I did with Soldier Boy [on The Boys] as well, but that was written in such a unique world that it was much easier to formulate that character. Mark felt very, very familiar to me and I wanted him to feel familiar to me and the audience — but I didn’t want him to be so familiar that it’s like, ‘Oh, it’s just this guy playing this guy again.’”

One element that sets Meachum apart from Ackles’ previous characters is the effect the rest of the team has on him. On Countdown, “It is a bit of a ragtag group,” he says. “They maybe don’t belong in the uniform aspect of law enforcement,

and when they get together they all see the world a little bit differently — but in that, they see the world a little bit the same.” Meachum, not unlike the rest of the task force, is surprisingly not a team player. “I think his superpower is that he’s unyielding in his mission. But his Achilles heel is that he can get in his own way, and develop issues with his superiors, his partners, and the trust that they have in his decision-making skills,” says Ackles.

But Haas believes it is that initial friction between team members, which coincidentally translates as sizzling onscreen chemistry, that is going to draw in fans and keep them glued to Countdown. “That same chemistry that I watched when these actors, who had never met each other, came together on that very first lunch — and then onto dinner — was great,” he says. “I get to watch the chemistry build and grow off-set, and then you get to watch it build and grow inside the task force. I think it makes for great television, and I think the audiences are going to love these guys as much as I do.”

As he is about to enter his third decade in the film and television industry, Ackles can’t believe the career of his dreams is still going strong. “Any job is a blessing, in my opinion,” he reflects. “I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: I don’t have to do this, I get to do this. The fact that I get to play with writers of the calibre of Derek, and actors of the calibre of Eric Dane and everybody else I’m working with, there’s a joy that I truly get walking onto a set. I enjoy this job a lot. I love the storytelling. I love the camaraderie. I love the workspace, and I love the products that we make.” ■

Aquaman breakout Jason Momoa co-creates and leads the cast of this historical epic about a roguish chieftain who is dragged into the bloody unification and colonization of Hawai‘i’s bitterly divided island kingdoms

CHIEF OF WAR

s a native Hawaiian actor, Moses Goods feels like he’s been waiting for Chief of War his entire life. To Goods, the chance to tell the under-told story of the unification (and eventual colonization) of Hawai‘i’s disparate island fiefdoms starting in the late 18th century under King Kamehameha (played here by Kaina Makua) felt like the culmination of a long career. “I always knew that this would come,” says the actor who plays Kamehameha’s closest adviser and father-in-law, Moku. “I’ve been telling Hawaiian stories for almost 30 years. In many ways, I’ve been preparing myself for this moment, for our stories to be told on a global platform.”

The opportunity to deliver Hawaiian history to the masses came from Game of Thrones and Aquaman actor Jason Momoa and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom co-writer Thomas Pa‘a Sibbett, both native Hawaiians who’d been planning this passion project for years. In their hands, the account of these powerful men and women gets a treatment both epic and authentic. “Pa‘a is a great historian and incredibly passionate about these ancestral stories,” says Cliff Curtis, whose character Keōua inherits the title of government leader from his father King Kalani’ōpu‘u,

I think for all of us, the scariest thing is hoping and praying that all of the work that we did and all the love that we poured into this is something that Hawai‘i feels proud of, and truly represents who they are. It’s scary. We’ve been waiting for three years for the answer.

but feels deceived by his cousin Kamehameha receiving the mantle “God of War.” “The minute you started reading the script, you knew this is special. And Momoa really inspired those involved to understand the importance of authentic portrayal of this ancestral time, from

the ships to the costumes, and the scale. This is a story of struggle and bloodshed, and an epic story.”

The nine-episode limited series features a cast of predominantly Polynesian actors, among them The Night Agent’s Luciane Buchanan,

The Book of Boba Fett ’s Temuera Morrison as the vicious, duplicitous King Kahekili.
Moses Goods as King Kamehameha’s fatherin-law and ostensible consigliere, Moku.
Te Ao o Hinepehinga as Ka‘iana’s wife, confidante and fellow rogue, Kupuohi.

Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Temuera Morrison and Curtis, who all hail from New Zealand and are of Tongan or Māori descent. Veteran actor Morrison, who knew Momoa from playing his father in the Aquaman films, was hesitant to take on the role of ruthless King Kahekili — antagonist of Momoa’s ever-conflicted war chief Ka‘iana and the aforementioned King Kamehameha in this fateful battle for Hawai‘i’s future. “I wasn’t quite sure if I could pull this off,” says Morrison. “A big part was learning the language and I was scared that I wasn’t able to attain the levels that I wanted to. Fortunately, we had enough lead time and now I feel very, very proud that I did say yes.”

Hinepehinga, who plays Ka‘iana’s wife Kupuohi, echoes Morrison’s initial fears. “When Pa‘a called me and said they really wanted me for Kupuohi, the first thing I asked him was, ‘Why do you want this random little Māori from New Zealand?’ But whenever there were questions or challenges, as somebody who’s not kanaka [native Hawaiian], it was reassuring to know that the people who were guiding my decisions were kanaka,” she says. “If it wasn’t kanaka making decisions, I don’t think I ever would’ve been able to take on this role because it just wouldn’t be right.”

Even native Hawaiian Kaina Makua, who plays King Kamehameha, struggled with whether he was up for the task. “I would say that, initially, I wasn’t the guy. Internally, I was like, it’s not me,”

Peerless on the battlefield, “Chief of War” Ka‘iana (Jason Momoa) must decide where his allegiances, and his destiny, truly lie.

says Makua, who finds himself in his first-ever acting role. “It’s a fairytale,” he admits. “I’ve coached youth outrigger paddling for 13 years now, and in 2019 I was coaching on the beach. Jason saw me, asked his friend to bring me to his house that night. I went to his house, we took some pictures and he told me that

about Makua keeping up either. “What sucks is the fact that this guy has never acted a day in his life and is outshining the rest of us,” Goods cracks. “I’m actually embarrassed because I’ve been doing this for almost 30 years, he’s been doing it for 30 minutes and he’s amazing. I love that.”

Kaina Makua as revolutionary King Kamehameha and Luciane Buchanan as his wife, Ka‘ahumanu.

I was going to play Kamehameha. I said, ‘You’re a liar.’ Three years later, he called me and said, ‘I told you so.’ And here we are today.”

Goods isn’t the least bit surprised that Makua ended up in the role as his son-in-law. “There is only one portrait that was made of [Kamehameha].

I’m completely honest when I say it’s actually this guy’s face,” he says. “Visually, he embodies him.” Talentwise, there was not much question

For all its intensity, the cast recalls many moments of levity behind the scenes of a series that has bonded them forever. “Because our story is so serious, we would keep each other laughing,” says Buchanan, who plays Kamehameha’s wife and Moku’s daughter, Ka‘ahumanu. “Some days were tough, and the weather would be the challenge. But what was so cool about working on a Polynesian project is that we also have that joy of living our dream.” All that remains is sharing the results with those whose opinions truly matter. “I think for all of us, the scariest thing is hoping and praying that all of the work that we did and all the love that we poured into this is something that Hawai‘i feels proud of, and truly represents who they are,” says Buchanan. “It’s scary. We’ve been waiting for three years for the answer.” ■

Average Joe armoured truck drivers Russell Pierce (Eddie Murphy) and Travis Stolly (Pete Davidson) land in the middle of a kooky, unpredictable

Nope breakout Keke Palmer plays Zoe, the suave mastermind who drags Russell and Travis into this madcap heist.

t’s fair to say that Eddie Murphy is back on solid ground, and has been for awhile now. After a string of box-office duds (the less said about Norbit, Pluto Nash and Holy Man the better), he launched a comeback with 2019’s Dolemite Is My Name, followed by Coming 2 America, You People, Candy Cane Lane and last year’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.

Now, Murphy returns with a high-octane comedy for Prime Video, The Pickup — in which he co-stars alongside fellow Saturday Night Live alum Pete Davidson. They play two mismatched armoured truck drivers who wind up ambushed by a group of criminals, led by savvy mastermind Zoe (Keke Palmer).

Zoe, however, is not just interested in swiping the cash from their vehicle, but instead forces the guys to assist in a casino heist.

“As chaos unfolds around them, the unlikely duo must navigate high-risk danger, clashing personalities and one very bad day that keeps getting worse,” reads the synopsis for the film hailing from director Tim Story, whose previous efforts include Shaft, Ride Along and the Barbershop franchise.

“He’s an icon,” Story said of Murphy when he and the cast appeared on The Jennifer Hudson Show. “He’s a big reason why I’ve made the movies I’ve made.”

THE HEIST IS RIGHT

Eddie Murphy teams up with Pete Davidson and Keke Palmer to pull off n epic robbery in new action comedy The Pickup

During that appearance, Murphy revealed that he was eager to work with Davidson, having become a fan after seeing him on SNL. “I thought he was funny,” said Murphy.

“And he looked up to Eddie a lot too,” added Palmer. “It was really cool seeing y’all two together.”

For Palmer, acting opposite Murphy meant that the laughter wasn’t confined to the movie itself.

“So, we’re filming this scene, it’s about to be a very deep monologue scene — but the movie is a comedy! So I’m talking to Tim, and I’m like, ‘I don’t know if I should go too deep, how it should be.’ Eddie overhears, he steps in, he’s like, ‘This is a big moment in the movie. This is the moment where it all makes sense. You gotta bring it home.’”

Admitting that Murphy’s words led her to feel the pressure, Palmer gave it everything she had, unleashing her inner Angela Bassett to deliver what she felt was a killer performance. Then, out of the corner of her eye, she saw Murphy on his feet, slowly clapping. That caused her to break character and offer him her sincere thanks — only for Murphy to quip, “I’m acting.”

“He gagged me!” Palmer said. “He gagged me to the ground.”

Murphy had previously vowed that he was through with action movies after returning to the genre with last year’s Beverly Hills Cop sequel. “I thought I was,” he said. “I was like, ‘Man, I ain’t jumping off no more s***, running and jumping, and just wind up doing it again.”

Desperate Housewives alum Eva Longoria plays Russell’s beloved wife, Natalie. Alas, her husband’s criminal shenanigans might just interrupt the couple’s big anniversary plans.

However, he explained that the opportunity to work with Story alongside Davidson, Palmer and co-stars Eva Longoria and Andrew Dice Clay was not one he could pass up. That said, he also insisted he’s not one of those Tom Cruise wannabes who proudly boasts about doing his own stunts.

“Oh, absolutely not,” he quipped. “I’ll do stuff that makes it look like it . . . but I’m not trying to get hurt — they have people that do that stuff, right? Even when I was young, I wasn’t jumping off stuff.” ■

Standup comedy legend Andrew Dice Clay rounds out this very impressive ensemble.

The Naked Gun

STARRING: Liam Neeson, Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, Liza Koshy

Canadian actor Leslie Nielsen enjoyed a late-in-life second career in comedy thanks to the role of dippy detective Frank Drebin in The Naked Gun and its two sequels. In this reboot/sequel directed by The Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaffer, Liam Neeson stars as Frank Drebin, Jr., who’s followed in dad’s footsteps by pursuing a career in law enforcement — and also being very, very bad at it. Taking on the old man’s gig as head of Police Squad, Drebin stumbles (in his case, literally) into a criminal conspiracy when a femme fatale (Pamela Anderson, fresh off her triumphant comeback in The Last Showgirl ) asks him to investigate her brother’s murder. Cue the wacky sight gags and goofy malapropisms.

The Bad Guys 2 Together

STARRING: Dave Franco, Alison Brie, Damon Herriman, Mia Morrissey Real-life spouses Dave Franco and Alison Brie star in this supernatural horror film from director Michael Shanks (Time Trap). They play a couple who move to an idyllic new home in the countryside with the goal of growing closer to each other. But like the old saying goes, “Be careful what you wish for,” as they soon find themselves at the mercy of a mysterious force that causes horrifying changes to their bodies.

STARRING: Sam Rockwell, Marc Maron, Awkwafina, Craig Robinson In this sequel to DreamWorks’ 2022 animated hit The Bad Guys, reformed crooks Mr. Wolf (Sam Rockwell), Mr. Snake (Marc Maron), Mr. Piranha (Anthony Ramos), Mr. Shark (Craig Robinson) and Ms. Tarantula (Awkwafina) are trying very hard to be good. However, they’re soon roped into a high-stakes heist masterminded by a new team of delinquents they never saw coming — the Bad Girls.

BOTCHED PRESENTS: PLASTIC SURGERY REWIND

Thursday, Hayu

QThis show has an interesting, Big Brother-esque quality to it that I wasn’t quite expecting . . .

AIt is very unexpected. I think people are going to think that it’s one thing because it’s got the title of Botched Presents, but really it’s got nothing to do with Botched — except Dr. Dubrow is there. But at the end of the day, this show is a little bit of Big Brother meets . . . I don’t even know what it meets! It’s its own thing. It’s got a lot of heart and comedy . . . and the fly-on-the-wall thing. It’s really, really interesting to see all these different people from different walks of life — even though they’re all celebrities in their own right — come together and live under the same roof.

Q You mention “heart.” Is it tough to maintain a balance between trashy reality thrills and also having empathy for these people, many of whom are going through a real existential crisis?

A

Somehow, I think we’ve successfully been able to strike that balance. You have to show the catty, snarky, snipey stuff that you expect from reality television — especially with celebrities living in the same house. You have to have that. Otherwise, it’s just really deep, and you don’t want to get too deep all the time. But the beautiful part about it is you see them grow together as friends — supporting, becoming each other’s hype man or hype woman. And it’s really fun to watch them get involved in everybody else’s storyline. They’re there

MEMORABLE ROLES:

This New Jersey native first hit it big as a singer and dancer in ’80s and ’90s groups Seduction and The S.O.U.L. S.Y.S.T.E.M. But over the past decade or so, the multitalented Michelle Visage has reinvented herself via reality TV — most notably as a longtime judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race and several of its international spinoffs.

CURRENT GIG:

for one another. It’s great to watch — along with the snarky, fun, laughter side of it. It’s a difficult thing to do, but I think we’ve managed to walk the line.

Q The celebs are shepherded on this journey not only by Dr. Dubrow, but by “body image expert” Dr. Spirit. What makes the two of them remarkable?

AListen, we all know Dr. Dubrow. We’ve seen him on how many years of Botched ? He’s a brilliant leader in his field because he’s good. And you know what else he does? He turns down a lot of cases. If he doesn’t think [a surgery is] good for the person, he won’t do it. You don’t get that a lot from surgeons. I absolutely respect that.

And Dr. Spirit is just an incredible woman with a ton of experience. She is so comforting and soothing. She doesn’t force her opinions as some therapists can do — putting those thoughts in your mind. She allows the housemates to come to

Visage emcees this new series in which she and Botched plastic surgeon Dr. Terry Dubrow invite nine celebs who have gone a tad overboard with the lifts and tucks (including singer Aubrey O’Day, Real Housewife Kim Zolciak and ex- Playboy model Kathy Brown) to live together in a luxury villa and mull over reversing their surgeries in favour of a more natural look.

conclusions on their own and she gently guides them through. She’s just wonderful at what she does.

Q Were you surprised by anything that happened this year?

A From episode two on, you really get to dive deep with these celebrities, and get involved in not only why they had the surgery that they had and why they want to reverse the surgery potentially, but also how they ended up here — some things that happened in their personal life that maybe you didn’t know. So, you go on a journey. Did I see anything that I didn’t expect? Yeah, I didn’t expect most, if not all, of these people to allow themselves to be as vulnerable as they’re allowing themselves to be. Because these are people that are known for the stuff on the outside that they carefully comb through and allow the things that they want to be seen. On this show, they’re allowing us into their lives in a much more impactful and vulnerable way.

The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy

What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?

They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?

To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our

survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
