IN MEMORY OF FRED LESLIE

We were saddened to learn of the passing of former Canada Cartage co-owner Fred Leslie at the age of 90. Fred was the grandson of company founder Robert Leslie, and along with business partner Bill Lindsay, acquired Canada Cartage in 1973 from Fred’s father Rodger Leslie. Fred was a well-respected and well-liked leader at the company, and continued to attend company functions until very recently He will be missed

Fred's life was a remarkable journey. Born into challenging circumstances, Fred spent his early years as a ward of the Toronto Children's Aid Society, being shuffled from foster home to foster home in Toronto. At age 12, his life took a dramatic turn when he was fostered and subsequently adopted by the Leslie family of Parkdale This act of love and kindness set him on a path that would lead to an extraordinary life

After attending St. Andrew's College in Aurora, Fred began his professional journey at the family business, Canada

Cartage, where he learned the trucking industry from the ground up. In 1973, he acquired the company from his father, Rodger Leslie, and, together with his business partner, transformed it into a leader in the Canadian trucking industry. Fred's tenure with the company spanned 50 years, during which he played a crucial role in its expansion and success

When not working, Fred enjoyed sports, including tennis, golf, curling and skiing He was an active member at Mississaugua Golf and Country Club for over 55 years, where he was the second of four generations of members. Service and faith were central to Fred's life. He was a dedicated member of Islington United Church in Etobicoke, where he served faithfully in many capacities including Church Elder, Trustee, and ultimately earned the designation Honourary Trustee. A particular passion of Fred's was the church's Mabelle Food Program, where he volunteered well into his 80s. Fred also found joy in serving his broader community. As a Rotarian for 25 years, he was named a Paul Harris Fellow, the organization's highest honour. He was involved with Goodwill Services for 12 years, and served on many professional and volunteer boards over the years.

But family was everything for Fred and brought him his greatest joy He was a devoted husband to Donna, the true love of his life He was a loving and devoted dad to Heather, Rodger, Kimberley, and Susan His love for Donna and their children was boundless, and together they created a home filled with warmth, love, and laughter. When grandchildren and then great-grandchildren came along, he became their beloved Grumps and loved them boundlessly as well. Fred Leslie's life was marked by gratitude, service, and immense love. He lived a remarkable life and was grateful for every moment of it. This legacy will live on in our hearts forever.

To honour Fred’s memory with a donation, please visit the Children's Aid Foundation of Canada at cafdn.org/FredLeslie.

SAFETY CORNER

SIMPLE TIPS FOR TRUCK DRIVERS DURING BACK-TO-SCHOOL SEASON

It is back-to-school time. Kids will be coming out of the woodwork. School zones will be crowded and chaotic, and school buses will be back on the roads. It is an excellent time of year to review some key safety messages.

Slow Down: Reduce your speed in school zones, especially before and after school. Watch for lower speed limits and flashing lights in these areas.

Watch for School Buses: Never pass a school bus with its stop sign out and lights flashing. Keep a safe distance so you have plenty of time to stop. The area around buses is especially dangerous for kids.

Stay Alert in School Zones: Look out for children walking, biking, or playing near the road Pay attention to crossing guards and stay focused on driving.

Plan Your Route: Try to avoid driving near schools during busy drop-off and pick-up times. Use highways or other roads instead of driving through neighborhoods when possible.

NATIONAL DAY FOR TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation statutory holiday is observed on September 30th of each calendar year. This holiday was established to honour survivors of residential schools, their families and communities and to commemorate the history and legacy of residential schools.

Although Canada Cartage observes this day in February, we encourage staff to recognize this day with two minutes of silence at 9:30 AM local time. We also encourage staff to wear orange to raise awareness of residential schools’ tragic legacy and honour the thousands of survivors.

OMA’S GRAND ADVENTURE

When one of CCLS’s valued customers reached out with a special request, the Canada Cartage team was eager to help make a dream come true. Traudi Murray, an 82-year-old visitor from Poole, England, had a few dreams she hoped to fulfill during her visit to Canada. After facing several challenging years, including significant medical issues and major heart surgery last year, Traudi, affectionately called “Oma”, expressed her desire to check off a unique item from her bucket list a ride in a transport truck.

Don Miller from Superior Glove contacted us to see if we could arrange this experience. Our dedicated team at the head office collaborated to bring Traudi’s dream to life. Chris Henry, one of our Company Drivers, had the pleasure of taking Traudi on a scenic ride from our head office in Mississauga, Ontario, to downtown Toronto, offering stunning views of Lake Ontario and the city.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the head office team who made this special moment possible, including Gord Karpf, National Director of Safety & Compliance; Peter Nicholson, Terminal Manager; Samantha Janveau, Operations Manager; and Derrick Sosu, Operations Manager.

GET CONNECTED YOU DON’T WANT TO WIN THIS PHISHING PRIZE

When it comes to staying safe online, it usually helps to remember an old rule: “If it seems too good to be true, it usually is.” In this month’s scam, cybercriminals are trying to trick you into forgetting this simple rule by sending you phishing emails. The phishing emails say that you have an opportunity to win a prize, usually from a major organization or brand, such as Marriott, Costco, Home Depot, and more

The emails vary slightly in their content, but they all offer you the opportunity to win a prize by simply clicking a button and providing some personal information. However, the emails were sent by cybercriminals If you click the link, you will be directed to a webpage that they control. If you enter any personal or financial information here, the cybercriminals will be able to see it immediately. You won’t win any prize from clicking the links, but the cybercriminals will. They’ll be able to steal your data!

Follow these tips to avoid falling victim to a phishing scam:

Major companies don’t usually give things away for free Be very cautious of any unsolicited emails that offer something at no cost.

Be very cautious when entering personal or financial information, especially after clicking a link in an email. If you need to enter your information online, make sure that you are on the organization’s official webpage. Look for signs of a phishing email. Most will contain a call to action, such as clicking a link in order to win a prize. If you believe the email is a phishing scam, click the “Phish Alert” button (if you are using the company Outlook email program) or click the “Spam” button on your personal email account
