SPRING THAW REGULATIONS ARE COMING TO A ROAD NEAR YOU

IT ALL BEGINS WITH SAFETY LIFT SMART: ESSENTIAL TIPS TO AVOID BACK PAIN

AND INJURIES

It's crucial to pay attention to how we lift things, especially when moving items by hand. Improper lifting techniques can cause everything from minor to severe back pain. To avoid getting hurt, consider these simple lifting tips:

Before you lift, make sure you're wearing solid shoes and gloves. Check how heavy and stable the item is.

Avoid lifting items by hand if you can use equipment like cranes, dollies, or carts. If something is too heavy or awkward to lift, ask someone for help.

Pay attention to how you stand and move. Here's how to lift safely:

Stand with your feet apart, one slightly ahead of the other.

Bend your knees and hips to squat down, not your back Keep your shoulders back and your chest up. Lift by straightening your legs and keeping your back straight. Avoid twisting while lifting. Move your feet to turn.

Keep the item between your shoulders and knees, around the level of your belly button

If you need to lower the item, bend at your knees and hips, not your back Never lift a heavy object above your shoulders.

When lifting something off a table, pull it close to your belly, making sure your muscles are tight. This helps keep you steady.

Following these tips can help you stay safe and avoid injuries while lifting.

TIME CHANGE

SPRING AHEAD – BUT BE CAREFUL ON THE ROADS

Sunday, March 10th, 2024, at 2 a m marks the beginning of Daylight Saving Time (DST), when most Canadians will move our clocks forward. Saskatchewan, the Yukon, and some remote areas of B.C., Ontario, and Quebec do not use DST and stay on Standard Time year-round.

The days after we "spring forward" and "fall back" both see an increase in fatal traffic accidents. In addition, several studies have shown that workplace accidents and heart attacks are more common the week after the time change.

Here are some tips to help you to better deal with the change:

Move your clock forward early, say 8 or 9 p.m., then go to bed at your normal time. You're giving up an hour during the day but will stay on schedule sleep-wise.

Skip the snooze button. Keeping a good routine when going to bed and waking is key to an easier transition.

One day a year of change isn't enough to mess up your schedule as long as it isn't routine

Get plenty of sunlight once you are awake. Daylight is a cue to your internal clock to stop producing melatonin, the hormone that makes you feel sleepy.

If you're sensitive to the time change, don't over-schedule yourself for the first few days. Doing too much can make those feelings of fatigue even worse.

Be extra careful on the road. The darker part of the day now falls in the morning, and people may be tired. So it's a good time to play it extra safe on the roads

MULTI-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a security measure that requires you to provide two or more verification factors to access a service or application rather than just asking for a username and password. These verification factors can include something you know (like a password), something you have (like a smartphone app that generates a code or a security token), or something you are (like your fingerprint or face recognition).

The main reason to use MFA is to add an extra layer of security. Think of it like adding an additional lock to your door. Even if someone manages to guess or steal your password (the key to the first lock), they would still need the second factor to get in. This makes it much harder for unauthorized users to access your accounts, protecting your personal information from hackers.

For example, suppose you have MFA enabled on your bank account, and a hacker gets your password In that case, they still can't access your account without also having your phone (if the second factor is a code sent to your phone) or your fingerprint (if the second factor is biometric). This makes unauthorized access to your accounts much more difficult, protecting your personal, financial, and work-related information from being compromised.

MFA protects your online accounts by adding an extra layer of security, making it much harder for hackers to gain unauthorized access Given the increasing sophistication of cyber attacks, using MFA is a crucial step everyone should take to safeguard their digital lives.

WELLNESS CORNER

STAYING HEALTHY WHEN TRAVELLING

When planning to travel, especially to another country, it's important to ensure you're healthy and prepared.

Here's a simple guide to help you stay healthy on your trip:

Before You Go:

Talk to Your Doctor: Chat with your doctor a few months before your trip. You might need certain vaccines for the places you're visiting. For example, the hepatitis A vaccine requires two shots six months apart. So, plan ahead and start early!

Update Routine Vaccines: Make sure you're protected against diseases like polio, diphtheria, and measles, which can still be common in some places.

Get Special Vaccines: You might need extra vaccines depending on where you're going. Your doctor or a health clinic can advise you on which ones.

Pack Your Meds:

Bring Enough Medicine: Take enough for your entire trip if you're on medication. It's also a good idea to carry a doctor's note listing your conditions and medications, and prescriptions for refills if you'll be away for a while. Don't forget any medical supplies you might need.

Prevent Malaria: If you're going to a place with malaria, get a prescription for preventative medicine. It's most effective if you take it before, during, and after your trip.

Consider Traveler's Diarrhea Medicine: Over-the-counter options like Pepto-Bismol or Imodium can be helpful.

While Traveling:

Protect Against Mosquitoes: In places with mosquito-borne illnesses, use DEET repellent, wear long clothes, and use mosquito nets while sleeping

Be Careful with Water: Drink only boiled water, like tea or coffee, and avoid ice if unsure about the water source Also, don't use tap water to brush your teeth

Practice Safe Sex: Condoms can help prevent sexually transmitted infections

Stay Away from Animals: Avoid dogs and other animals where rabies is common, as they may not be friendly and can bite.

Check with your local health unit or travel health clinic for more advice.

Remember, planning is key to staying healthy during your travels!

SPRING THAW REGULATIONS ARE COMING TO A ROAD NEAR YOU!

Many Canadian provinces implement a "Spring Thaw" policy each year, enforcing reduced trailer load restrictions to protect roads when they are most vulnerable to damage due to high moisture levels. Enforced by each province, the policy restricts loads carried across at-risk highways for a fixed period. According to the vehicle's axle type and configuration, restrictions can vary between 8% and 20%. For more information about the thaw period and weight restrictions of individual provinces, please visit the following:

Alberta (http://www.transportation.alberta.ca/522.htm )

British Columbia (http://www th gov bc ca/bchighways/loadrestrictions/loadrestrictions htm )

Manitoba (https://www.gov.mb.ca/mit/srr/ )

New Brunswick

Ensure that you are compliant with provincial Spring Thaw regulations. Failure to do so can result in steep penalties, vehicle and driver downtime, potential vehicle damage, and a risk to road safety.
