SAFETY CORNER

SUMMER SAFETY FOR TRUCK DRIVERS

It's the summer, and driving is supposed to be easy There is no more black ice, snowstorms, or slippery roads just you and the open road. However, warm weather brings its own challenges. Regular truck inspections must happen, and you need to think about the effects that heat has on your vehicle.

Meet the heat with these safety tips:

Tire Air Pressure:

The heat increases tire air pressure and wears the rubber more quickly, especially with improperly inflated tires. Inspect your tires, check tire pressure habitually, and ensure the pressure is appropriate for the load. Drive at posted speed limits; the higher your speed, the higher the friction and heat on your tires.

Tire Blowouts:

Summer is also the season for tire blowouts, a potentially dangerous situation. If the tire on your truck has a blowout, it is crucial to reduce your speed and pull over when it is safe to do so. Set up emergency triangles and wait for a repair service. Driving on a blown tire could cause other tires to blow from carrying extra weight, leading to a more severe accident.

Windshield Washer:

Dead bugs become smears on windshields and reduce visibility. Carry extra windshield washer fluid and include it in your fluid level checks.

Drivers:

Be aware of heat exhaustion Drink lots of water and wear light, breathable fabric

DON’T GET FOOLED BY SPEAR PHISHING GET CONNECTED

Cybercriminals are trying to scam you by sending you text and email messages, claiming to be your boss.

The message could contain a lot of detailed information about Canada Cartage, making it seem legitimate. Scammers research the company and managers before reaching out to you. They use information they find in their research to try and trick you into

believing that you are actually texting with your manager. The scam is a type of personalized phishing attack known as spear phishing.

The scammers send casual messages about your organization to put you at ease before moving to what they really want – money and information. They may tell you that they have a business expense that they urgently need to pay for. Or they may tell you that they need your banking information to complete paperwork for HR.

Follow these tips to avoid falling victim to a spear phishing scam:

Be skeptical if you receive a text message from an unknown number, or if an email doesn’t look quite right, especially if you are being asked to act urgently. Any unexpected financial request should be treated very cautiously. It is highly unlikely that your manager would ask you to send them money or personal information. If you receive an unusual message, follow the Canada Cartage reporting policy. If it’s an email, click on the “Phish Alert” button in Outlook. If it’s a text, take a screen shot of the text, and send it along with a message to the IT Service Desk via Radius People Others in your organization may be receiving similar messages By reporting the message quickly, you can help prevent other attacks from being successful.

Remember to Stop, Look, and Think. Don’t be fooled by scammers.

CONFIDENTIAL SAFETY COMPLAINTS (CSC)

As a reminder to all of our drivers, if you have a safety issue that you feel has not been adequately addressed, you can make a Confidential Safety Complaint by emailing the National Safety Team at NST@canadacartage.com

The National Safety Team email address is monitored only by Corporate Safety and Claims Management.

Please add "CSC" in the subject line, and include your name, contact phone number, and a brief description of your concern All emails will be treated as confidential

WELLNESS CORNER WATER: YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT

The human body is almost entirely water, and depending on age, sex, and body type, can be up to 75% water. Water forms the basis of numerous bodily functions, from facilitating digestion to regulating temperature and maintaining cell health. Unlike food, which can be stored for later use, the body cannot retain water and, therefore, requires a continuous supply to replenish losses incurred through breathing, sweating, urination, and other metabolic processes.

The recommended daily intake of water varies based on age, gender, activity level, and environmental conditions Water is preferred, but other beverages, also contribute to hydration. However, try to avoid intake of sugary or artificially sweetened drinks as they have adverse health effects.

Dehydration poses a significant risk, particularly to vulnerable groups such as infants, children, and older people. Symptoms range from thirst and headaches to confusion and weakness and, if left untreated, can lead to severe complications and even death Conversely, excessive water consumption can result in a rare condition known as hyponatremia, characterized by dangerously low levels of sodium in the blood. Finding the right balance is crucial in maintaining optimal hydration levels.
