Council defeats rezoning request

A request to allow higher-density housing in Camrose’s Fairview neighbourhood was defeated Monday after residents packed council chambers to oppose the rezoning.

A public hearing was held during the June 22 regular council meeting before Council considered second reading to Bylaw 3408-26, which would have redesignated two properties at 4910 and 4912-44 Street from R2 (mixed use residential district) to R3 (medium density residential district).

The application sought to increase the development potential of the two lots. Under the current R2 zoning, up to four residential units are permitted on each property. The proposed R3 designation would have allowed developments of up to 12 units per lot.

Administration supported the application, noting the properties are located near schools,

commercial services and employment areas and that surrounding blocks already permit higherdensity development.

Residents of the neighbourhood, argued the proposal would change the character of one of Camrose’s more established neighbourhoods. A total of seven written submissions were received by the city, including one additional submission was received after the deadline and 12 residents spoke at the Public Hearing.

Several speakers said additional density would worsen parking and traffic congestion and place further strain on infrastructure. Others voiced concerns about declining property values and the loss of the neighbourhood’s mature charm and landscaping.

Some residents also expressed fears that larger multi-unit developments could attract an unsuitable demographic and negative-

ly affect the sense of safety for nearby families.

The applicant’s intent was to get approval to be able to build a seven-unit development proposal for each lot, with all of the responses opposing the project. The applicant defended the proposal during the meeting, questioning whether residents support growth and affordable housing only as long as it doesn’t happen in their own neighbourhoods.

Councillor DJ Ilg voted in favour of the rezoning, saying affordable housing options are necessary and that families and individuals deserve the opportunity to afford living near schools and green spaces.

Following the hearing council voted to defeat the bylaw, ending the rezoning application.

Despite the decision, the owner of the properties still retains the ability to build multi-unit housing under the existing zoning.

Peace, order and good government On the eve of Canada Day – our country’s 169th birthday – I was moved to look up stuff about Canada’s original constitution.

Here’s an excerpt from the British North America Act (BNA) of 1867, which established Canada as a separate country.

“It shall be lawful for the Queen, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate and House of Commons, to make Laws for the Peace, Order, and good Government of Canada, in relation to all Matters...”

According to Wikipedia, this section of the BNA Act was intended to establish what Canada’s federal government could make laws about, and what provincial governments could make laws about.

Meanwhile, next Saturday, July 4, is the 250th anniversary of the establishment of the United States of America – when thirteen North American colonies decided to unite as a country, rather than being colonies of a European nation. Here’s what the United States “Declaration of Independence” says: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

It struck me that Canada’s “Peace, Order and good Governance” is a very different mandate than “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Canada’s mandate is focused is on the well-being of groups of people. The United States’ mandate is focused on the rights of individual men (but not women?).

Looking at Canada and United States today, I wonder if those words in the legal documents that established us as countries have affected the way our two countries have evolved.

It seems to me (possibly because I’m biassed!) that Canadians are believed to be mostly polite and considerate of others, compared to Americans. I don’t know if non-Canadians believe that – or if they even think about it (probably not).

I also don’t know if the belief about polite Canadians is accurate. I do know that I once accidentally bumped into someone who fell down, then looked up at me and said, “I’m sorry.” *** On the eve of Canada Day, I’m reflecting on what I appreciate about Canada.

I appreciate that our country was able to evolve from collections of European people who chose to sail across an ocean and settle in a new land (albeit a land populated by Indigenous people). Over the centuries, the Europeans evolved from being “colonials” to forming a sovereign nation – without having a war.

I appreciate that, at some points in our history – such as two world wars – we have punched above our weight. I appreciate that, at some times, we have been Peacekeepers in other parts of the world.

I appreciate that, when I am riding a public transit bus in Edmonton, I look around and see people whose origins are from all parts of the world – Europe, Asia, Africa, South America. Nobody appears to be uncomfortable being part of that multi-racial collection of strangers.

I appreciate that Canada has some of the most spectacular and diverse scenery in the world – mountains, prairies, tundra, coastal.

I appreciate that when threatened by our neighbour to the south, we set aside internal differences and pull together.

I appreciate that, what with the coldest days of winter and hottest days of summer, we have varied weather.

Fly the Maple Leaf, but get it right I have also been concerned about the misguided Alberta separatists co-opting the provincial flag for corrupt purposes.

It is a cheap trick, like not creating a new political party, that demonstrates their unworthiness. Perhaps we’ll need a new provincial flag when it’s all over.

It is heartwarming to see the number of patriotic citizens who are currently displaying the Canadian flag in support of national unity. However, I notice that many of the flags being sold are knock-offs that don’t conform to official dimensions. The official lengthwidth ratio is two to one, so three by six flag is correct but a three by five flag is not.

The official flag also looks better so it’s worth the effort to find one.

Wayne Hansen, Edmonton About “the pause” I read with interest the front page of the June 23 issue of The Camrose Booster.

While I join with all Canadians in bemoaning the recent announcement that the RCAF Flight Demonstration Team - the beloved Canadian Snowbirds - will be placed on pause, I write to suggest that there is a depth to this story beneath the surface.

I have lost count of the number of times I have watched, spellbound, the Snowbirds’ performances.

Just the sound of the nine ship team approaching show space evokes deep emotion within, not to mention tears to my eyes. The Snowbirds have established themselves as an icon of Canadian unity throughout their storied fifty-five year history. It is no wonder so many of us wish there would be no pause in their schedule.

However, the Canadair CT-114 aircraft that has comprised the team has reached its service limits. Numerous parts for the aging fleet are no longer available or at least, difficult to come by.

Components, especially

those which ensure the safety of the pilots such as the ejection systems, are outdated.

I would refer readers to Episodes 105 and 106 of “The Pilot Project Podcast” in which host Bryan Morrison and former Snowbird Commander Lieutenant Colonel Maryse Carmichael (Ret.) discuss at length the reasons behind the pause.

L-C Carmichael applauds the pause in view of the realities behind it. Pilot safety and aircraft longevity are the primary concerns driving the decision.

Public reaction, understandably, has been swift and largely negative. But can a sixty-three year old airframe be expected to fly forever, given the extreme maneuvers that are part of the Snowbirds’ routines? And at the potential expense of human lives?

A quiet and smooth transition is in the works to replace the Tutor with the new PC-21 or Siskin II aircraft, and yes, this transition will take several years. In the meantime, Canadians will miss the spectacle of nine red and white aircraft flying over Parliament Hill on July 1, not to mention the inspirational performances throughout show season from sea to sea to sea.

But anyone who has ever strapped into any aircraft knows that safety is the overarching concern.

A well intended “No Pause” postcard campaign may express our love for the Snowbirds, but it falls short of understanding the complexities of, and the need for, a wellplanned pause.

Brian Krushel, Camrose Life is hard Now I would consider myself a happy person and am grateful for all of the blessings and goodness that life has bestowed upon me. The unfortunate reality is that life is hard.

Even at the best of times life can be consuming.

The daily grind of work, the battle to pay the bills, do laundry, try to be the best parent possible, eat right, exercise and the list goes on. Then throw in

the inevitable conflicts at work, a broken down vehicle, a washing machine that needs replacing and life gets even more complicated. Then throw in the real blows such as an unexpected death, job loss or cancer scare and it can feel as if life is too much to handle.

Have you ever looked at someone and thought that they had it all together? That their life must be so easy and if only you had what they had? The reality is that we all struggle. We struggle to survive in our own worlds. We struggle to be happy, to enjoy the little things in life and not dwell on the daily grind.

Every parent is struggling to do it right, not everyone working with you knows exactly what they are doing and people everywhere are constantly grieving for those who have passed away in their lives no matter how long ago.

In no way can this letter convince you not to worry about things, but what I am hoping is that we all check in on each other. Ask your friends and family how they are doing. If you know someone is struggling in life, offer to help them. Give them a call, send a text or give them a hug. Even if someone appears to be doing well, check in on old friends and family to truly be sure that they aren’t struggling with life.

For those of you who are struggling with life, talk to someone. Whether it is a spouse, friend, coworker or a health care provider. No one needs to feel that they need to go about life alone. The world has become so busy and so complex that it is almost impossible to always have your life in order. Just as you would ask for help lifting something that is too heavy, one must do the same when it comes to your mental health. Let’s all help to take care of each other.

Auctioneer Otto Streberg donated his auctioneering talents to the project, a gesture very much appreciated, and in keeping with the spirit of the community. Approximately $4,100 was realized from the sale of many articles that had been donated, $1,800 in cash donations was also contributed. The net proceeds were sent to the Guatemalan earthquake victims.

The Battle River Community Foundation is proud to announce that Reading University is back for the summer of 2026. And this year, for students from Camrose, the university aspect is literal. This is because the University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus has returned to work with the Foundation and the Battle River School Division on this initiative. Reading University will also be held again this year in Tofield and Killam. To date there are 32 children attending the Camrose Reading University program, 15 in Tofield, and 6 in Killam.

Reading University, which began in the summer of 2009, would not have been established without financial support from the local community. Reading University in 2026 is no different. This year, funding has been provided by a number of local community groups including: the Royal Canadian Legion No. 57, the Camrose Royal Purple Lodge No. 49, the Alberta Retired Teachers’ Association Camrose Branch, the Camrose United Church Women, and the Kinette Club of Camrose. Community Foundation funds developed to support the program, as well as individual donations to Reading University, also work to ensure the program remains cost free for participants.

Reading University is a literacy program for students in Grades 2 to 4 who are not yet reading at their grade level.

Certified teachers are hired to teach the classes, with a student to teacher ratio of approximately 1 to 15, allowing for more individualized attention than in a normal classroom. The theory underlining the program is that up to Grade 3, you learn to read, and beyond, as the literacy requirement for all subjects increases, you read to learn. Thus, if you are not reading at grade level by the time you reach upper elementary, the likelihood that you will fall further and further behind increases. This can impact not only the student, such as by lowering selfesteem, but society at large by limiting, for example, their capacity for employment.

It was very important to the founders of the program, and to all those involved today, that Reading University feel less like an extra month of school and more like a summer camp which happens to include a lot of reading. And while there are, of course, lots of books, there are also many other reading activities that the kids might not even notice as such, including learning how to read a recipe or how to read a map so you can get to the camel enclosure at the Valley Zoo. Because going to the Zoo is not just a field trip when you are at Reading University. It is an opportunity to research animals beforehand, take notes as you go, and report on what you’ve seen.

And while short field trips, such as to the Camrose Airport, are also wonderful learning opportunities, longer field trips provide the added prospect of making new friends across the region, as the children from the Camrose, Tofield, and Killam programs are bussed together. Community members are also involved in the children’s learning, coming in to read stories and also writing letters to the students about what they love about reading so that the students can write back.

According to Brock Bartlett, Principal of Reading University, “Literacy lives everywhere, not just in a classroom. Through Reading University, we’re combining targeted, small-group instruction with engaging local excursions to show students that learning is a lifelong adventure. Thanks to our partnership with the Battle River Community Foundation and once again University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus, we are thrilled to offer this

transformative, cost-free program to families across the Camrose, Tofield and Killam areas this summer.”

In regard to Reading University’s return to Augustana, perhaps no one is as excited as the Augustana staff themselves. Dean John Parkins remarks, “The Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta is thrilled to once again host local Camrose students for the Reading University program this summer. Having the program take place right here on a university campus provides these young learners with a uniquely beneficial and inspiring experience. Our faculty and staff are eagerly anticipating the vibrant energy the students bring to campus, and we look forward to continuing this fruitful partnership for years to come.”

One of the most interesting things commented on by parents and family who have children attending Reading University is not just their improved literacy, or a newfound joy of reading. It’s the confidence they develop both inside and outside the classroom. Parents comment on the fact that their child is now able to read aloud in class, to be in a school play, and is better at making friends. Alex Oliver, Director on the Board of the Battle River Community Foundation, states, “Since its inception in 2009, Reading University has been a ‘dream come true’ for not only the students who need to improve their literacy skills, but also for the parents and grandparents who have watched their children struggle with reading and now have blossomed into selfassured readers. It’s an innovative program taught by professionals to allow the students to catch up on their literacy skills and confidently move forward with their future endeavours.”

Graduation marks the culmination of the Reading University experience for the young students. The ceremony is a time for friends and family to come together and celebrate all that the students have accomplished. This year the graduation ceremony will take place on the Augustana Campus and will be marked by a barbecue lunch for everyone involved. This includes the students from Tofield and Killam who will be bussed in to take part in the day. The graduation ceremony itself is built to make each and every student feel special, including an opportunity to say what they liked best about the program, what they want to be when they grow up, and, of course, to receive their certificate of graduation. It is a wonderful way to honour both students and teachers for all their hard work and to send the students off into the new school year better prepared to succeed.

Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Norwegian Convention

Submitted Camrose hosted a convention that saw thousands of Norwegians descend on the local fairgrounds in 1926.

The four-day convention saw people from across Canada, the United States and Norway and received hospitality from local Camrose residents.

One hundred years ago, this week in Camrose, a flurry of excitement took over as thousands arrived at the Camrose Fairgrounds for The League of Norsemen’s (Nordmandsforbundet) Convention that took place from July 3 to 6, 1926.

This was a landmark gathering of Norwegian leaders to focus on supporting local Norwegian residents while fostering cultural foundations in North America. Choosing Camrose for this event was purposeful with the prominent presence of Norwegian settlers in the area in the early 20th century.

The convention took place to select influential NorwegianCanadians for national positions to assist and guide the development of the community. The event featured guest speakers and delegates from across the country to focus on the preservation of Nordic heritage and help with immigrants settling into the area.

The souvenir program from this event included a message from Camrose Mayor J. Douglas. His message welcomed attendees from Canada, the United States and Norway to town.

He commented, “The Citizens will welcome you and we trust your visit to Camrose will be an event long to remain in your memory as one of the most pleasant experiences in your life.”

Speakers throughout the conference included dignitaries such as the Honourable Chas. Stewart from the Dominion Government and Consul L. Aubert from the Norwegian Government. The Honorable J.E. Brownlee brought greetings from the province while messages were also shared from Saskatchewan, Manitoba, British Columbia and Member of Parliament W.T. Lucas.

The Women’s Missionary Federation of the Norwegian Lutheran Church of Canada met at the Union Church during the convention. The Elks Hall hosted the Centennial Film and North Cape Film as part of the continual program.

Flag ceremonies were held throughout the conference singing both the Canadian and Norwegian anthems. On the Sunday evening of the conference, J.J. Akre, president of the Norwegian Lutheran Church delivered a sermon, with the Camrose Band and Camrose Union Choir, among others contributing to the music.

Throughout the event, music played a big role. The convention included selections from Crooked Lake Band acknowledging the Indigenous peoples. Professor G. Bothne gave an address on the history of the

Norse people. Professor K. Bergsagel shared his remarks about Norsemen as Canadian citizens.

The convention was led by a dedicated group of officers and committees. Officers included representatives from Montreal, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and B.C. Committees covered every aspect of the event from transportation, concessions, and publicity to reception, exhibits, housing and women’s committees.

The unwavering resilience of these early settlers led to the formation of the Camrose Sons of Norway in 1927, leading to the Camrose chapter to be called “Terje Viken” (after a famous Norwegian poem). Today the Norwegian traditions continue with the Sons of Norway Ronning Lodge #504.

The early Norwegian settlers were instrumental to shaping Camrose and the area. They are responsible for not only establishing a solid foundation for education, but for establishing commerce and infrastructure.

Influenced by the beautiful green spaces and miles of trails around Stoney Creek, they also brought with them their love of cross-country skiing. That deep connection to the sport has grown to the community’s current elite status as a Nordic training centre in the region.

These early settlers set a firm foundation in the agricultural and cultural roots in the community. Their legacy has also been preserved in architecture and ongoing community traditions in The Rose City.

Today the area continues to celebrate this deep heritage, proudly carrying on the legacy of its roots. A Viking Longship replica built in 1985 is housed at the Camrose Visitor Information Centre and represents Camrose’s strong Nordic roots.

Culinary traditions can also be enjoyed today at The Lefse House, which offers authentic, handcrafted Scandinavian treats and bakery items like lefse and krumkake.

From the early pioneer trails that guided Norwegian settlers to the present day activities, the connections continue to shape Camrose and keep the roots and cultural fabric of the community alive, shaping the welcoming identity for which Camrosians are known.

I sat down recently to write a summer activity wish list. I stared at the blank page as it slowly dawned on me that what I really wanted was a summer without lists; a summer where there are days that are blank slates. No plans, nothing that has to be done, just enjoying each other’s company. Maybe someone would suggest getting an ice cream cone, going on a bike ride, or reading in the hammock.

Maybe we’ll write out a few ideas for activities or treats and put them in a jar, taking turns drawing slips of paper with ideas: play Frisbee, jump in the sprinkler, go swimming somewhere new, or eat a popsicle. (Or is a jar with lists the same as making a list?)

Summer is at hand, those blissful months for kids of sleeping in, seeing friends, and going on family holidays.

It can be a fine line when planning activities; too much on the go means no one can ever relax, yet having too little planned can mean everyone getting on each other’s nerves.

I started to think about my childhood summers. I have two brothers plus my mom baby-sat for two boys our age all summer, who would arrive early in the morning and nap on our couches until we awoke. I hardly remember being inside at all in the summer. We built forts, made concoctions to put on trees to see which one grew tallest, and raided the garden for snap peas and carrots as snacks, rubbing the dirt off on the grass. We played imaginary games where giants chased us and we slunk stealthily through the forest. We climbed trees, threw caterpillars at each other (mostly at me as the only girl), and found mysterious nature objects to bring home and admire later in our bedrooms. We set up Monopoly and played the same game for several days in a row, taking breaks to run outside. It was magical.

Summers nowadays don’t always feel that carefree.

As my kids have gotten older, sports have slowly spread into the summer months. Campgrounds now need to be booked months in advance.

I recently read a list of ideas to help have a fun summer for toddlers, but it seems the ideas apply to kids of any age: each day, have a physical activity, an outside moment, a small treat, a together activity, a quiet reset, and a bedtime talk about the best and worst of the day.

It also suggested giving kids a “yes” moment where they get to make a choice about their day, from the snack to afternoon activity. However, for extra complexity, I now have two teenagers and one preteen. My suggestions for activities (put out there in the hopes that I will be included) might not be viewed favourably.

This past weekend, as our canoe trip plans were cancelled due to the heavy rainfall, I suggested that we see an afternoon matinee of Toy Story 5. I asked who was interested, and only my youngest said yes (after asking what a matinee was). Then, five minutes later, my 16-yearold arrived in the kitchen to announce that both her and her 15-year-old brother would, in fact, like to go to the movie. It turned out that they had met to discuss this new proposal before agreeing. Sometimes it’s just a matter of putting an idea out there, and seeing if it latches on.

As I planted flowers and a garden this spring, and we worked together to make the yard look tidy, I decided that I want to spend some serious time this summer enjoying the idyllic setting. I’ll be on the lookout for good books to read while sitting on my back patio, and might even make a new treat like key lime pie. To bring back the carefree summers from my childhood, I’ll try not to make too many plans ahead of time, and try to spend as much time in nature as possible. Maybe it was because we had the freedom to be bored, that we were able to be so creative. Maybe a simple summer is where the magic lies.

This summer, I’m hoping my family will have a chance to connect, rest, reset, and take a break from some of our commitments.

Maybe, with a little luck, the summer will even feel magical.

Hydrating in summer heat Metro News

Summer is a season to enjoy some fun in the sun, but it’s imperative that people remember to take steps to reduce their risk for heat illness.

Those measures should include efforts to hydrate and remain hydrated throughout the day. Water will almost always help people remain hydrated even when they’re working in the heat.

But food also plays a vital role in preventing heat illness. Eating regular meals can help to replace the salt lost through sweat.

It’s also important that individuals avoid energy drinks and alcohol when spending time in the hot summer sun. Many energy drinks contain more caffeine than standard servings of coffee, tea and soft drinks, and excessive caffeine consumption can contribute to dehydration.

The same can be said for alcohol.

Consuming alcohol within 24 hours of working in the heat can increase the risk of heat illness.

Nadine Leming, Camrose Booster Curtis Mandrusiak will be attending the National Summer Special Olympics in Medicine Hat this August.

He is very excited about this opportunity.

Curtis Mandrusiak is a local swimmer who has qualified for the 2026 National Summer Special Olympics this coming August 11 to 15 in Medicine Hat, AB. Curtis’ swimming career began a few years ago when one of his coaches were looking to add to their roster.

This led to qualifying for the Provincial Special Olympics last July in Grand Prairie where he won a gold and two silver medals. Curtis said, “The best thing is that everybody from Camrose brought home a medallion from Grand Prairie.”

His gold medal win last summer in the 50M backstroke, qualified him to participate at the National level in swimming. Curtis will be one of 200 athletes from Alberta competing at these games in Medicine Hat. He is one of 15 swimmers from the province and the only one representing Camrose. This will be Curtis’ first visit to the National Special Olympics. He has previously represented Camrose at the provincial level in both basketball and swimming.

He definitely feels more confident as a swimmer. He commented, “I’m basically a swimmer.” One of his favourite things about the sport is getting to know the other swimmers and teammates.

Cathy Mandrusiak is Curtis’ mom. When asked about his success in the sport, she remarked, “It is fantastic. Now that he participates in the Special Olympics, it’s his turn to shine.”

Curtis has a personal trainer that he works with two to three times a week and has been training very hard for the upcoming event in August. If Curtis performs well at the Summer Games, he could qualify for the World Special Olympics in Chile.

As Curtis hopefully climbs onto the medal podium in August smiling, he will surely be an embodiment of the Special Olympic athlete oath. “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”

It is a good reminder that like in the pool, as it is in life the ultimate victory lies in the courage to try.

An excellent opportunity exists for a highly motivated and dynamic Economic Development Officer – Business Retention and Expansion to join our team. Reporting to the General Manager of Community Development, this position is responsible for supporting the growth, sustainability, and competitiveness of businesses within the City of Camrose. This role leads the design, implementation, and evaluation of the Business Retention & Expansion (BR&E) program, working proactively with local businesses, industry stakeholders, and regional partners to identify opportunities, address challenges, and foster a strong local economy.

An excellent opportunity exists for a reliable and detail-oriented individual to join our team in the position of Administrative Support 3 – Corporate Services, Health and Safety. Reporting to the Health and Safety Advisor this position is responsible for coordinating City wide training and maintaining City wide documentation for the City’s Digital Action Tracking System (DATS). This position will provide administrative support to the Health and Safety Advisor and will participate in various OH&S related tasks as assigned. This position is well suited for someone with a strong technical and administrative background and a keen attention to detail.

FUNCTIONS (but not limited to): • Develop, implement, manage, and report on a comprehensive BR&E program aligned with City economic development and corporate strategic plans that help local businesses be sustainable and grow.

• Oversee the business visitation program that conducts regular, structured outreach to local businesses to assess needs, challenges, and growth opportunities.

• Develop programs to encourage revitalization of key commercial areas.

• Build strong business relationships and serve as a primary contact for businesses seeking information, support, and connections to resources.

• Oversee Business License process including revisions to Bylaw, renewals, and approval of all licences.

• Collect, manage, and analyze economic and business intelligence data to inform decision-making.

• Demonstrate clear understanding of business needs, identify barriers to business growth and work collaboratively to develop solutions across sectors.

• Support local business expansion projects including site selection assistance, zoning and permitting navigation, and coordination with internal departments.

• Collaborate with regional economic development and business support organizations, including the Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce, industry and local associations, and others on initiatives that support workforce development, innovation, and business success and growth.

• Represent the municipality at business events, trade shows, and community meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS: • A post-secondary diploma or degree in Economic Development, Business, Marketing or a related discipline is preferred; however, equivalent experience may be considered. Professional designation is highly desirable.

• Familiarity with the local business environment considered a key asset.

• Minimum five (5) years’ experience working directly with businesses or within the labour market.

• Strong business acumen and ability to effectively perform in a local government setting.

• Familiarity with the Municipal Government Act and knowledge of planning and development is considered an asset.

• Advanced skills in facilitation, presentations and public speaking.

• Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills and advanced proficiency with MS Office suite.

• Ability to analyze, draft, follow, and update bylaws, policies, and procedures related to job description.

• A valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence. The successful candidate will be required to operate a personal vehicle for business purposes..

QUALIFICATIONS: • Certificate or Diploma in Office Administration; equivalent relevant administrative experience will be considered.

• Post-secondary education in the Occupational Health and Safety field considered an asset, such as Health and Safety Administration.

• Familiarity with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code.

• Minimum of 1 – 3 years of administrative experience; administrative experience in occupational health and safety is preferred.

One country, from far and wide

By Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada Canada is our home, and there is nowhere quite like it. From Moresby Island in the west to Bonavista in the east, to right here in East Central Alberta, every part of our country is shaped by hardworking people who care for their families, their neighbours, and their communities.

On Canada Day, people from coast to coast to coast come together to celebrate the country we have been blessed to inherit, the freedoms we cherish, and the values that unite us.

Our constitutional tradition strives to give every Canadian a voice and to protect the rights we so deeply treasure.

None of this has come easily. For centuries, brave pioneers pushed west, cleared the land, and braved harsh winters to build communities like the ones we call home today. Workers risked their lives and limbs to build railways, the TransCanada Highway, and develop our oil, gas, and minerals from the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin to towns like Viking, Gooseberry Lake, and Drumheller.

Generations later, their families continue to work and steward the land. You can still see that in the Alberta spirit today: in the rancher checking fences beneath a foothills sunrise, the roughneck on a rig, the nurse on a night shift, the entrepreneur opening a shop on a main street that welcomed them with open arms.

When the floods came and fires burned, Albertans did what Albertans have always done: they showed up for each other.

Outstanding Canadians from Alberta have shown us what’s possible: John Ware, born into slavery in the U.S, became one of Canada’s finest horsemen; Emily Murphy fought for stronger representation for women in our government and greater freedom in public life; and Mark Messier carried this province’s name to the top of the hockey world. Along with many others, they have inspired generations of Canadians.

And when we celebrate Canada, we recognize our brave soldiers, sailors, and aviators who have proudly served from the trenches of France to the hills of Afghanistan and stand on guard today at CFB Wainwright and around the world.

FACTS Nadine Leming, Camrose Booster Audrey Lett celebrated her 97th birthday with family and friends. She enjoyed the stories shared by her son and sung along to the songs performed at her party.

The Lett family took time to celebrate Audrey Lett’s 97th birthday on June 20.

Audrey’s children, Richard and Patricia, told the story and legacy of their beautiful mother through song and memories. It was a time for family, friends and fellow residents to gather at Deer Meadows.

Audrey is known as a great hostess welcoming anyone who comes through her door. Her birthday celebration was no exception with many wonderful treats and beverages to share with the loved ones gathered to honour her special day.

Audrey is a daughter, wife, mother to her four children and grandmother.

She’s a teacher, scholar, musician, friend and world traveller. She is also very loved by her family and friends that gathered to recognize her.

The afternoon was filled with some of the

music that Audrey has loved her entire life interspersed with stories from her life that were heartwarming, funny and sentimental. Her party was set up like the playbill of a musical which outlined the tales of her life and included songs like “When You Wish Upon a Star”, “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” and “By the Light of the Silvery Moon”.

The afternoon included several special performances. Audrey herself sang “Crazy” before a special mother-daughter duet. There was a special tribute to the birthday girl from her daughter Patricia and another from her son Richard.

It was a wonderful party filled with deep love for a woman who means so much to so many. Her family did a fabulous job sharing the legacy of Audrey, leaving those in attendance that may not have known her with a better sense of this wonderful lady.

BRCF welcomes community at Open House

The Battle River Community Foundation (BRCF) welcomed community members to its annual Open House on June 24 at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre.

Held annually, the event gives residents of the Battle River region an opportunity to learn about the foundation’s work, the impact of its grants and how they can get involved in supporting their communities.

BRCF board chair Stephen Kambeitz welcomed guests “We view this event as having two important purposes, the first is to provide information about the Battle River Community Foundation to anyone who is interested, and the second is to give everyone in the community an opportunity to approach the Board directly and to ask questions and provide feedback,” said Kambeitz.

He then provided an overview of the foundation’s work. “We are an endowment focused charitable foundation, we invest the donations we receive, and then we grant a percentage of the investment earnings to registered charities in our region. We set the percentage that we grant at an amount that will allow us to grant and grow, every year, forever.”

Kambeitz noted that, thanks to more than three decades of work by donors and board members, BRCF’s endowed funds have grown to more than $31 million. The foundation awarded just $200 in grants during its first year. Since then, it has distributed more than $10 million to charitable organizations throughout the region. “Pretty soon we are looking at being able to grant $1 million every year,” said Kambeitz.

He also reflected on a busy year for the foundation. “It has been a really great year at BRCF, we have been innovating, and advocating, and energizing,” he said, noting the foundation’s involvement with the new Community Foundations of Alberta group and successful Community Builders Dinners in Gallahad and Camrose.

This year’s dinners will honour Terry and Ellie Hamilton in Flagstaff County and Bob and Valerie Bailey in Camrose.

Following his remarks, University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus professor Greg King moderated a panel discussion featuring BRCF grant recipients and supporters.

Panelists included Stacey McLennan, executive director of Flagstaff

Family and Community Support Services; Alyssa Martin, executive director of the Camrose Public Library; David Stolee, a BRCF donor and former executive director; and Kambeitz.

Martin spoke about the longstanding support the Camrose Public Library has received through the Ross and Denise Irving Fund, saying the funding has become an important part of the library’s annual budget. She also praised the straightforward grant application process.

McLennan shared how the grants from BRCF have helped the organization support Flagstaff community members live with dignity. She spoke about the challenges rural organizations often face when applying for grants, noting many funding programs are designed around the realities of larger urban centres.

“The beauty of BRCF is that we can have conversations on the stoop of the post office, with someone who sits on the board about our needs in our community and it is an open-ended conversation that allows us to get to the root causes and talk about ways to solve problems that are meaningful for each individual community,” she shared.

She likened the Foundation’s role to the unseen threads that hold together a piece of embroidery.

“When I think about all the facets that BRCF touches, it makes me think of a picture that’s embroidered. So if it’s hanging on a wall, you will see a beautiful picture and, of course, there is a lot of work and time that goes into a picture like that, and if you were to turn the picture over, you will see behind that picture the threads are woven up, down, forwards, backwards and it doesn’t look as clean and perfect as it looks on the outside, but it works. That thread behind that picture is what keeps that picture the picture. That is the thread of BRCF, all the threads working together, it’s a real tapestry,” said McLennan.

Stolee, who served as the first ever executive director for BRCF, and now supports the Foundation as a donor, encouraged attendees to think beyond lifetime giving. “If you are inclined to be a giver or philanthropist, someone who supports the community or charities, you know you can do that, but when you are not here anymore, would you like to continue that support?” he asked.

Rediscovering the night sky People have been looking up at the stars and gaining an understanding of the cosmos for tens of thousands of years, perhaps more. Stars were used for determining times to plant and harvest. Navigation, especially by sea, critically relied on knowing star positions, patterns, Gerhard Lotz, Physics, University of Alberta and motions. Carl Sagan, Augustana Campus the marvelous communicator of science and host of the groundbreaking 1980 Cosmos television series, summarized our present understanding in this way: “We live on a hunk of rock and metal that circles a humdrum star that is one of 400 billion other stars that make up the Milky Way Galaxy, which is one of billions of other galaxies which make up a universe which may be one of a very large number, perhaps an infinite number, of other universes. That is a perspective on human life and our culture that is well worth pondering.” Sagan suggests that understanding the universe may also help us understand ourselves - and perhaps engender a little humility?

Humanity’s documented knowledge has expanded incredibly over the last four hundred years with the use of increasingly complicated technology and instruments. At the same time, the average person may know less about the stars than our forebears as we no longer look at the stars in the same way. That we are rapidly losing dark skies due to the large amount of wasted light we generate certainly compromises our appreciation of the night sky. In cities we can see only a few hundred stars at best compared with the three thousand we would see at a truly dark site.

Fortunately, we only need to travel 20 minutes north of Camrose to see the full splendor of the night sky. Miquelon Lake Provincial Park is located within a designated Dark Sky Preserve and is the home of the Augustana Campus Hesje Observatory. The observatory was made possible by a very generous donation

by Brian Hesje, an alumnus of Augustana’s predecessor, the Camrose Lutheran College.

The Hesje Observatory has a wonderful 10-metre high deck that gives an unobstructed view of the entire sky either with the unaided eye or binoculars. It also houses a modestly large 17-inch diameter telescope with remarkably precise optics to look at much fainter, exotic celestial objects, such as beautiful double stars, glorious star clusters, star birth regions, and the remnants of dying stars in our own galaxy. Other galaxies from which light takes tens of millions of years to get to us can also be seen through the eyepiece of the telescope. As well, the telescope can reveal intricately detailed features of the Moon and planets.

Spring is an ideal time to visit the Hesje Observatory. Nights are warmer, and the sky gets dark at a not too late hour. Thursday nights are open for drop-in visitors and private bookings are also possible.

Details can be found at www.ualberta.ca/en/augustana/research/amlrs/observatory. The only caveat is that it must be a clear night, which sometimes requires patience and flexibility! It certainly is a worthwhile and awe-inspiring activity to connect to the cosmos, and perhaps as Carl Sagan would have proposed, be invigorated to make our world a better place.

Barr’s 1964 Studebaker Avanti is meant to be driven

Malcolm Barr’s 1964 Studebaker Avanti has been part of his life for 49 years – it is a car he completely restored from nose to tail. When he purchased the car, it was already more than a decade old and showing its age, but he saw the potential in the sleek American grand touring coupe.

“It was 12 years old when I bought it,” Barr said. “It was driveable, but it needed restoring. It has been rebuilt from front to back, the engine, the drivetrain and the body has been painted twice,” he shared.

Introduced in 1962, the Avanti was Studebaker’s bold attempt to redefine the American performance car. Its futuristic fibreglass body, lowslung profile and distinctive grille-less front end stood apart from anything else on the road. Even today, the design remains instantly recognizable, highlighted by its smooth body lines and unique round headlight bezels set deep into the front fenders.

The car was also rare from the beginning. Production numbers remained relatively low during its short run under Studebaker, making surviving

According to collector websites, the 1964 Studebaker Avanti was one of the fastest American production cars of its era. Supercharged versions could exceed 170 mph in factory testing, an astonishing speed for the early 1960s.

Unlike most cars of the period, the Avanti used a fibreglass body instead of steel. This helped give it its sleek, futuristic shape and reduced the risk of rust.

The car’s styling was so radical that it had no traditional front grille. Designer Raymond Loewy and his team created a smooth, grille-less nose that looked years ahead of its time.

Although Studebaker stopped building cars in the United States shortly after the 1964 model year, the Avanti refused to die. Independent companies continued producing updated versions of the car for decades, making it one of the longestlived specialty car designs in automotive history.

While the mechanical restoration required considerable effort, Barr said bringing the body back to life proved to be the most demanding part of the project for him.

“The bodywork took the most time and patience,” he said. The result is a beautiful burgundy vehicle, that stands out for its unique appearance. For Barr, however, the Avanti’s value is not about its rarity or distinctive styling, his favourite part is the driving experience, and over the years it has carried him and his family on countless memorable road trips and adventures.

“We have driven many, many miles on it,” he said.

“It is nice to drive, it isn’t quite like the newer cars but I like it.” Among his favourite memories are the

journeys shared with family members, including a memorable road trip with his daughter.

“My daughter and I went to Portland, Oregon, with it,” he shared.

After 49 years of own-

ership, the Avanti remains a car filled with memories, miles and stories accumulated over decades in the family, making it every bit as valuable to Barr today as the day he brought it home.

February 27, 1948 - June 19, 2026 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lorne John Ferguson on June 19, 2026, at the age of 78 years, after a short illness. Lorne will be dearly missed by family and friends.

Lorne was born on February 27, 1948, in Calgary. He grew up on a farm in the Ghost Pine Creek area and later Provost, adventuring with his three brothers and sister. Lorne was a resident of Camrose for the past 57 years.

For 28 years, Lorne served his community as a dedicated and respected member of the Camrose Police Service. Lorne made many lifelong friends at the Camrose Police Service. After retiring from the Police Service, he worked as a Park Ranger at Miquelon Lake.

Lorne was committed to community service, working with groups such as Ducks Unlimited, Battle River Watershed Alliance, and the Camrose Legion. As an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and photography. Lorne was proud of never taking the same route more than once, discovering every small town, and learning about every stranger he met along the way. He also enjoyed getting out on his motorcycle for rides. His greatest love was spending time with his family.

Lorne will be missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Laurie Ferguson; his son Craig Ferguson (Stacey); and his daughter Crista Ferguson. He was especially proud of his grandsons Dawson and Callum Ferguson. Lorne was dedicated to cheering his grandsons on in their many sporting activities.

As per Lorne’s wishes, there will be no funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Lorne’s memory may be made to Nature Alberta or STARS Air Ambulance.

May 7, 1938 - June 26, 2026 Sonja Uglem, daughter of Alex and Margit Olson, was born on May 7, 1938, in Camrose. She passed away on June 26, 2026, at the age of 88.

Sonja grew up on a farm three miles north of Camrose with her sister, Gwen, and brothers, Marvin and Bradley. She attended Baldenstein School before completing her education at Sparling School. She met Don through their siblings’ courtships (Lloyd and Lois, Jack and Gwen) and their relationship grew while they were both studying in Calgary. Don in mechanics and welding at SAIT, and Sonja training to become a Registered Nurse at Calgary General Hospital. They were married in 1960 and built their home in Bawlf, where they lived until 2015. Together they raised four children and found great joy in watching their family continue to grow. Family, faith and community service were at the centre of Sonja’s life.

Her relationship with Jesus was deeply personal and she lived out her faith each day.

Throughout her career at Bethany, Daysland Hospital, Smith Clinic, Rosehaven and St. Mary’s Hospital, nursing was more than a career—it was an expression of her faith, a heart for missions and her love for those in her care or the community member needing first aid. Sonja touched countless lives with her kindness, compassion, quiet strength and unceasing prayers.

She had a special way of making others feel welcome, seen and cared for, whether by checking in on someone who was struggling, offering the comfort of a prayer, or sharing a cup of tea while listening and encouraging. Family gatherings were made special with homemade baking, beautifully decorated cakes, and a table set with care. She enjoyed scrapbooking, growing flowers, photography, bird watching, and listening to gospel music. In her final years, Sonja particularly enjoyed spending time with co-residents and caregivers, sharing her love and appreciation for all they did for her. Her gentle spirit, unwavering faith, and caring heart will be remembered by all who knew and loved her.

Sonja is lovingly remembered by her children: daughters Joanne (Michael Brown), Elaine (Keith Finseth), Leanne (Terry Grant); and son Dwayne Uglem (Janell).

She was a cherished grandmother and great-grandmother to Travis (Brittany) and Grayson, Tiffany; Nathan (Rachael), Nicole (Matt), Naomi (Nathan), Jordan, and Jack, Joy and Arnold, Zackody; Amy (Caleb) and Hudson, Gabe, Rhett, Victoria (Tayler) and Graeme, Brooks, Brynn, Carlie, Lindsey; and Carter.

She is survived by her brothers, Marvin Olson and Bradley (Lorraine) Olson. She was predeceased by her sister, Gwen Hagen, and by her beloved husband of 63 years, Don Uglem.

Cyanobacteria are

naturally occurring and large growths called “blooms” are more common during warm weather.

Cyanobacterial blooms can be blue-green, greenishbrown, brown, pink and/ or red, and can look like scum, streaks, grass clippings, fuzz balls, paint or pea soup. They often smell musty or grassy.

People who come in contact with a cyanobacterial bloom or who ingest water containing cyanobacteria may experience skin irritation, rash, sore throat, sore red eyes, swollen lips, fever, nausea and vomiting and/or diarrhea. Symptoms can

Daniel “Dan” James Halback

March 18, 1978 ~ June 20, 2026 Daniel James Halback passed away on June 20, 2026, at the age of 48.

He was the youngest of four children born on March 18, 1978, into the family of Don and Leila, in Regina, Saskatchewan. Dan spent his early years in Silton before moving with his family to the Hay Lakes area in 1982. There, he attended Hay Lakes School, where his love for sports and his many friendships began. In 2000, Dan met the love of his life, Angela. They married on July 6, 2002, and built a life centred on family, welcoming their daughter Haley and son Cody.

Dan was a devoted husband, father, coach, and provider who found great joy in supporting his children in their pursuits and creating a loving home together.

Dan attended NAIT, where he earned his Journeyman Machinist and Journeyman Crane Operator certifications. Most recently, Dan worked at Camrose Machine and Welding, where he found great fulfillment in mentoring apprentices and passing on his hard-earned skills – including to his son, Cody. In 2012, Dan and Angela settled on their acreage near Ohaton, where they embraced the rural lifestyle that he loved. Dan dreamed of a simple, self-sufficient life spent hunting, riding motorcycles, tending a garden, cutting firewood, caring for animals, and serving those he loved.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Angela; children Haley (Cameron) and Cody; parents Leila (Ralph) Wegner, Donald (Linda) Halbach, Patricia (Dave) Rogers and Alan (Linda) Lodberg; his siblings Troy (Tanis) Halback, Christie (Kevin) Miller, Sharie (Shawn) Rideout, Jarred (Jerrianne) Wegner, Laura Lodberg and Jamie Lodberg; and numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and great-nieces. Dan was predeceased by both sets of grandparents Alec and Muriel MacDonald and Ed and Betty Halbach; and father-in-law Hal Paulson.

Above all, Dan will be remembered as a man who loved deeply, lived fully, and treasured time with family and friends.

Ernest Wilmer Patrick

October 18, 1933 ~ June 19, 2026 Ernie Patrick of Camrose, Alberta, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2026, at the age of 92 years.

Ernie is remembered by his children Bruce Patrick (Donna) and Kelly Doel (Rod); six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and sister Gladys Douglas. He was predeceased by his parents Joe and Annie Patrick; wife Kathy; son Keith Patrick; grandson Christopher Patrick; and brothers Rudy and Elmer.

A special thanks to the staff at St. Mary’s Hospital for the care given to Dad. As per Ernie’s wishes, a private celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Dalas Kosinski started with Burgar Funeral Home in March 2023. Owner Bart Orr and Dalas have been lifelong friends and have had many conversations throughout the years on the possibility of Dalas joining the Burgar team. After working in the oilfield and mining industry, Dalas was at the Coal Creek Golf Resort as the assistant superintendent. In March, he decided to change paths and joined the team at Burgar Funeral Home.

As with many of the families we serve, Dalas’ family has been assisted over multiple generations with compassion by Burgar Funeral Home. The son of Rodney and Nancy (Vos) Kosinski, Dalas grew up in Daysland, where he graduated from high school. After high school, Dalas was off to Fairview College where he received a Turf-Grass Diploma. He then returned home, where his heart had always been, to start his career as a golf course superintendent at the Daysland Golf & Country Club.

It was in Daysland where Dalas started a family. He has three children Skylar, Lincoln and Joren, who are very active in sports as well as in the community.

Dalas is honoured to be a part of the history of service that Burgar Funeral Home has been known for since 1906. Serving our community and its families is his passion.

Patrick “Paddy” Robertson Hagel

September 18, 1952 ~ June 18, 2026 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband and father, Patrick Hagel. Pat was the second of four children born to John and Sylvia Hagel of Camrose, and he was a loyal resident of the community all his life. In addition to being a wellknown local businessman, Pat loved motorbiking and had many projects and interests. He was known for caring for family and friends (often with food), and his ability to make people feel seen and appreciated. Loved by all who knew him, his sense of humour and generous, good nature will be greatly missed.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 50 years, Marjorie; daughters Jocelyn (Jason) Sparks and Troni (Jed) Jobst; brother Dan (Michelle) Hagel; nieces Asa, Emily and Zoe Hagel, Gena (Trevor) John and Amber Lawrence; and nephews Nathan Nargang and Andrew (Laina) Hovey.

CAFCL celebrates another successful year

The Camrose Association for Community Living (CAFCL) hosted its annual celebration June 17, bringing together clients, board members, staff, volunteers and supporters for an overview of the organization’s 2025-26 year.

Established in 1962, CAFCL is a non-profit organization that supports individuals and families facing barriers, developmental disabilities and acquired brain injuries.

Board president Bart Orr opened the evening by introducing directors and welcoming guests before inviting CEO Robin Good to provide the annual update.

“You have probably heard about lots of things that are changing in the world of disability services right now. We have the ADAP change coming and there is lots of stress among the world of disability services,” said Good.

Despite ongoing challenges, Good highlighted several achievements over the past year, including the development of CAFCL’s new core values: building connections, nurturing well-being, igniting empowerment, driving positive change and acting with integrity.

“We also scored 100 per cent on our accreditation review, which was really exciting as well,” she said.

Good also noted several accessibility improvements. “I want to say thank you so much to the City of Camrose and the Helping Hands Grant through Vision Credit Union. We partnered with them, as well as Janelle Fleck’s family, who helped us raise the money to install an accessible change room in the Mayer Aquatic Centre. That was something that had been in the works for quite a few years,” said Good.

The organization also installed a new ramp at one of its residences and acquired a tandem bicycle.

“We enhanced some of our services through new partnerships. We have just received a grant from the Camrose Police Service for our Mom’s Connection Group,” she added.

“We received an Every Kid Can Play grant for our summer camp and that was a significant grant, so that was really helpful because last year we didn’t get any Canada Summer Jobs funding.”

CAFCL also partnered with Neighbor Aid to offer community kitchens and delivered educational programming for Grade 4 and 5 students. Good thanked the Battle River Community Foundation

for its ongoing support and the funding they received from them, for their brain injury awareness and prevention presentations.

Treasurer Ashley Davis then presented the financial report. “Fundraising revenue remains consistent with previous years,” said Davis. CAFCL’s revenue experienced a three percent increase in the last fiscal year, while operating expenses stayed fairly consistent as the organization focused on controlling costs after a prior Persons with Developmental Disabilities funding shortfall. Government contract funding held steady, leading CAFCL to report a net operating surplus of $194,063. Additionally, robust market performance contributed to a $266,784 rise in the fair value of investments, culminating in a total excess

Mardell Olson was named Volunteer Champion. Through her work on the nominations com-

mittee, Olson has helped recruit prospective board members and contributed to the development of a stronger CEO evaluation process.

Three scholarship and bursary recipients were also announced.

The $2,500 Human Services Scholarship was awarded to Avery Batke, a second-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing student at the University of Alberta who also worked as a Kandu Summer Camp leader.

The $500 BorrisBowen Scholarship, presented to a student who self-identifies with a disability and is pursuing further education, was awarded to Avery Rahier, who is studying ethics and transferring into French and International Studies at the University of Alberta.

The $1,800 Gillespie Family Bursary, awarded to a student pursuing education related to disability services, went to Gwen Forst, a third-year psychology student at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus.

CAFCL reported supporting 186 children with special health and developmental considerations, while 249 Grade 5 students participated in 13 school presentations focused on disabilities and healthy body image.

Ten individuals participated in the Jobs4Youth program and received support finding and maintaining meaningful employment.

Twelve adults in residential services accessed community and transition supports related to changing medical needs and aging.

The organization also supported 137 families, welcomed 51 children and youth to Kandu Camp, assisted 59 adults through adult services and engaged 54 families through community kitchens.

Across its Healthy Families, Family Supports and Jobs4Youth programs, CAFCL made 988 referrals to community resources.

Overall, CAFCL had a successful year and was able to accomplish its mission of creating an inclusive community.

Question: What are the bylaws around bicycles being ridden on the sidewalks instead of the roadway?

Answer: Generally speaking, bicycles are treated as vehicles and are expected to follow the same rules of the road as motor vehicles.

Under Alberta’s Traffic Safety Act, cyclists are required to ride on the road; however, children under 14 or those riding small, child‑sized bikes (50 cm tire diameter or less) may use the sidewalk.

The City of Camrose Traffic Bylaw also prohibits bicycle riding where marked, such as the downtown core.

Where sidewalk riding does occur, cyclists must yield to pedestrians and travel at a safe speed – pedestrians always have the right‑of‑way.

These rules are in place to reduce collisions and improve visibility for both cyclists and drivers. The safest approach is for cyclists to use the roadway, obey traffic signs, ride predictably, and walk their bike in crowded areas.

BRCF supports Imagination Library Submitted by Laura Young

The Battle River Community Foundation awarded a $2,750 grant to the Rotary Club of Camrose’s Dolly Parton Imagination Library program.

Kim Boyco, coordinator of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program states, “Rotary Camrose is truly grateful for the funding received from the Battle River Community Foundation for our Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program. Parent and child book reading is considered one of the most important and valuable preschool experiences and helps to set them up for success. Literacy is the foundation of a child’s future and Rotary is pleased to contribute to this with the gifting of books to children.”

The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is an initiative of the Dollywood Foundation. The purpose of the program, which began in 1995, is to nurture a love of reading among children and families from birth to age 5. This is achieved by sending a child one ageappropriate high-quality book free every month. The program was inspired by Dolly Parton’s own father, who never learned to read, but communicated to her the value of reading to being able to follow your dreams. Beginning as a small initiative in her home county, the Imagination Library has since expanded across the United States, to Canada, and abroad.

As of the beginning of June, Rotary Club of Camrose has worked to distribute 14,980 books.
