The Rebirth of the

In the years from 1980 to 2006, over 400 future NHL players briefly played the sport they love in front of fans of the game who travelled to Camrose to watch thrilling collegiate hockey. The Viking Cup, well known to scouts, coaches and players, featured U-18, junior and university teams from USA, Sweden, Finland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Russia. In 2022, a committee comprised largely of Augustana Vikings Hockey Alumni met to begin working towards the rebirth of the Viking Cup. The undertaking was massive. Hundreds of volunteers, considerable municipal and provincial government and corporate support was essential in bringing the Viking Cup back to our community. As 2025 winds down, this unique world-renowned tournament is finally back, and the on-ice entertainment has already proven to be impressive. Like the inaugural tournament, it once again features teams from the United States, Europe and Canada. The gold medal game will take place early evening on January 3.

Two new outdoor rinks now open

On December 22, the City of Camrose held a grand opening of a brand new outdoor skating rink for the public.

This new rink is located between the Camrose and District Centennial Museum and Rotary Youth Centre, located right across from Field House.

This season City of Camrose has added two new rinks and discontinued the Valleyview pond rink. A total of 11 outdoor rinks are now available for Camrosians to enjoy, with benches and garbage bins located to change into your skates safely and hockey nets placed on the ice for a quick game. The 11 outdoor rinks are located at: • Castle Park: 41 Avenue, between 59 and 60 Street.

• Century Meadows Park: 6300 Block Enevold Drive.

• Duggan Park: 3809-69A Street Close.

• Elizabeth Heights Park: 67 Street, between 42 and 43 Avenue.

• Mirror Lake: two skating rinks are located on the lake on 48 Avenue and 55 Street.

• Rotary Youth Centre: 4517-54 Street.

• Shuman Park: south of 47 Avenue between 47 and 48 Street.

• St. Pat’s Rink: located on 50 Street between 53 Avenue and 54 Avenue.

This location is boarded and has lights that are on until 10:30 p.m. every evening.

• Valleyview South: located at 560723 Avenue at Valleyview South Playground. This rink is replacing the Valleyview pond location to give residents a safer location.

• Victoria Park: 54 Avenue and 6200 Street Block.

As shared by the City of Camrose on December 23, all outdoor rinks are now officially skate-ready. For more information visit www.camrose.ca Rinks are unsupervised and free to be used by all community members and the City advises that caution be taken by anyone using them. Rinks will be regularly swept and flooded by the City team, as time allows.

U20 All-Star team at Viking Cup

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) will ice an Under 20 all-star team made up of players born in 2005 or 2006 from across the league.

Kyle McIntyre, SJHL commissioner said, “The Viking Cup represents a major opportunity for the league’s top young players to showcase their abilities to U Sports and ACAC.” Players on the all-star team will be representing their SJHL teams from Flin Flon, Weyburn, Estevan, Melville, Kindersley Yorkton and Humboldt.

The SJHL has a heritage of being one of the leading junior A hockey leagues in Canada. The list of players who have progressed effectively to future hockey or educational opportunities remains solid. The league is known for its great player development and its commitment to its players, and the communities where they are located.

The all-star team is coached by Drew Kocur, the Estevan Bruins head coach and general manager. Serving as

team general manager is Rick Oakes, a longtime Melfort Mustangs executive.

Rick said in an SJHL press release, “The revitalization of the Viking Cup is going to be a great opportunity for players to showcase the abilities they have, and hopefully they can open some doors for some new opportunities moving forward.” (Sourced from the SJHL’s official website) “Very excited and honoured to be the coach of the Viking Cup team,” Drew said. He continued, “It’s always exciting when you get a chance to coach some of the top players in the league. I had done some homework and reached out to some connections/colleagues, including Mike Johnston, who had coached in the Viking Cup from 1982-87, and he had talked about his experience and how it’s a great opportunity.” (Sourced from the SJHL’s official website) This team is in Camrose to compete, work hard and showcase the skill set of each player.

The “Happy” in “Happy New Year” In Canada, if you’re a teen-age boy or a woman over 70, the odds are good that you’re going to have a happy new year.

I’m not making that up.

Statistics Canada released a report on self-reported life satisfaction (or happiness).

Two groups of Canadians report being happiest – and by a wide margin compared to other age groups. What two groups? Teen-aged boys and women over 70. *** It makes sense that women over 70 are happy. (I can say that with authority!) If they’ve reached 70, they’re likely reasonably healthy. If they have enough basic income, household income is not a big factor in their life satisfaction. (Side comment: More money does not make older people happier. However, poverty makes them more likely to be unhappy.)

For women over 70, family and career responsibilities are lighter. Freedom is greater than in their earlier years.

Their life satisfaction is most affected by their friends, family and community. A strong sense of belonging has a big impact on how people feel about their life. Older women usually have a strong sense of belonging.

But even happier than women over 70, the happiest people in Canada are boys aged 15 to 19. Why is that?

Boys in that age group are usually extremely healthy and have strong bonds with friends. However, they don’t have the kind of achievements and relationships that bring satisfaction to older women. As well, over the past ten years, prospects for young men regarding both education and the job market have gone down. At the same time, opportunities and the performance of young women have increased.

So why are young men so happy? I laughed out loud when I read the explanation.

John Helliwell is a professor emeritus of economics at the University of British Columbia. He is also a worldrenowned happiness expert. Helliwell suggests that “self delusion” might explain why young men are happy.

(That’s when I laughed out loud.)

And young women? They have better education and job market success in the past decade. At the same time, they have anxiety and a dip in their life satisfaction. Helliwell says, “Boys seem to be cool with how things are and aren’t bothered by their performance.”

Maybe boys are happier than girls because they are self-deluded?

I found my mind spinning off into speculation about the benefits of self-delusion. Then I reined in my mind and kept reading…

What about the happiness of people between twenty and seventy? *** For both men and women, life satisfaction tends to go down as they move into adulthood. A “U-shaped” happiness curve is typical. Mid-life brings competing demands.

Career, family and mortgage obligations take their toll. A return to teen-age levels of happiness typically doesn’t happen until the pressures begin to reduce in later life.

Helliwell’s happiness research has some clues for navigating those mid years. (A friend once called those years “that difficult life stage between twenty-five and death.” However, he had not yet experienced being after-70!)

Helliwell’s research shows that, besides good health and enough income, three big factors improve feelings of well-being: • a congenial workplace, • a stable neighbourhood, • a happy marriage.

So there you have it.

As you head into your happy new year, feel free to use those findings, along with this wisdom from Mahatma Gandhi…

He went straight to the point: “Your blood count has reached the threshold.

You will start chemotherapy next week Thursday.”

I was in shock. I recall thinking, “There must be some mistake. You’re likely reading someone else’s chart.” I protested that I could not start treatment that day due to a work commitment. So he allowed a one-day delay. I started the next Friday instead.

That was two years ago. I’ve just completed treatment number twenty-four. And the nurse at our local Cancer Clinic informed me that I’ve been assigned another twentyfour cycles - another two years worth of treatments.

This is very good news. It means that my body has responded very positively to the medications and for the most part, my condition is stable.

So I’m writing this to express deep appreciation for the amazing care I have received through Alberta Health Services. I’m grateful for an observant family doctor who noticed that something was slightly ‘off’ in a routine blood test and referred me to the Cross Cancer Institute.

That resulted in the early detection of multiple myeloma - cancer of the bone marrow. The doctors and support staff at the CCI have been amazing.

Even though they see thousands of patients each year, it feels like I’m the only one in their care. “My” oncologist-epidemiologist gave me his personal cell phone number and told me I could call him any time. Whenever we talk, our conversations are warm and personable. He asks me about my family and keeps me informed about his son’s speed skating career.

I am also very grateful for our local Cancer Clinic. Until my diagnosis, I had no idea how privileged Camrose-area cancer patients are. We have an amazing medical team

right here at St. Mary’s Hospital. I receive my infusions and injections there, so no need to drive to Edmonton. When I attend the Clinic it’s like walking on to the set of the ’90s TV series Friends. Everybody knows my name! If I have to wait for a few minutes, the hospital chaplain stops by to express his support.

In addition to being an out-patient, I spent several days as an in-patient at St. Mary’s Hospital. Despite a very busy day at the ER, the doctor listened attentively as I shared my story.

When our visit was nearing completion I thanked him for the time he spent with me. He replied, “That’s what I’m here for.” The care I received throughout my stay was superb.

And while I’m at it, I’ll add a comment about my brother’s experience. Just over a year ago he had a heart attack. He was rushed by ground ambulance from Peace River to Grande Prairie and then transferred by air ambulance to the Cardiac Unit at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton. He couldn’t say enough about the exceptional people who helped him achieve a full recovery.

Add to all of the above the incredible support from family and friends - especially the prayers of our tiny grandkids.

As Albertans, we have heard many concerns about AHS. I, for one, continue to be amazed and ever so grateful for what we have in our publicly funded health care system.

Brian Krushel, Camrose Responding to McKinstry’s letter

Paul McKinstry’s recent letter to the editor prompted a fact check on his rationale for Alberta separation. First, federal transfer payments are based on federal taxes that fund three major transfer programs: the Canada Health Transfer, Canada Social Transfer, and

Equalization. These programs support health care, social, education, and other programs under provincial control, and not ‘Vancouver condos.’ Alberta received $8.649 billion from the first two programs this year alone, based on federal data. Separation would require Albertans to replace that funding from a smaller population.

Alberta doesn’t receive equalization payments because our average provincial tax revenue is higher than the national average, which reflects our higher per capita income.

Equalization tops up provinces below the national average. Our tax revenue from income tax and petroleum royalties puts us above the national average.

In fact, Alberta now has the highest average individual income in Canada according to Alberta’s Economic dashboard, and income has increased steadily since 2021. On average, Albertans are benefiting under the existing system, but we’re experiencing cost-ofliving increases that affect all Canadians.

Lastly, declines in petroleum employment link mostly to industry automation, not federal policy.

Alberta’s oil production has increased from 2011, as have export sales helped by federal support for the TransMountain pipeline.

Decarbonization, which the current federal budget supports, could add jobs. In contrast, provincial renewable energy policies have driven away investment.

Times are changing at a global level, which affects the federal and provincial realities. Cooperation and innovation by all Canadians, not separation, are needed to build our future.

• Joe Cameron, Director of the Sedgewick Branch of the Battle River Credit Union, presented a cheque for $5,000 to David Stolee, Executive Director of the Battle River Community Foundation. This donation has been added to the $5,000 donation received last year, to create the Battle River Credit Union Leif Osback Memorial Fund. This fund is so named in tribute to the late Leif Osback for the contributions he made to the growth and development of the Credit Union.

• Jaron Wensley received a cheque for $7,426.66 from the Wheels for Wensley Fund started in 1999 by Beaver Lumber. Jaron was injured while making a delivery with a Beaver Lumber truck in June, 1998. The money will help him with the purchase of a van which can be modified for wheelchair access.

Cost of the modifications necessary will be covered by the Workers’ Compensation Board. Presenting the cheque to Jaron were several members of the Beaver Lumber staff including Neil Kryzanowski, Vikki Stang, Dwayne Bonnett, Jackie Dumas and Brent Younger.

After 28 years and 6,170 miles of service with the City of Camrose Fire Department, the old 1947 red Chev fire truck with the La France pump rolled out of the fire hall for the last time and took up permanent residence at the Camrose Museum. A spanking new yellow 1975 Ford fire truck rolled into the fire hall. Much larger than the truck it replaced, it is equipped with a 24 foot ladder and has a five-man cab. While the chassis is Ford, the equipment came from Superior Emengency Equipment of Red Deer. The total cost of the unit was $33,820. Escaping winter: tips for better travel planning

As Camrose settles into winter, many residents begin dreaming of warmer climates. Whether it’s a chance to explore new destinations or simply escape the cold, December through April marks the busiest travel season in North America. Here are a few tips on making better travel plans in 2026, according to Jane Beck, a local travel expert with years of experience as a travel agent and traveller.

Check requirements

According to Beck, one of the most frequent mistakes travellers make is failing to check entry and exit requirements before booking their destinations.

“One of the biggest things we see is that travellers don’t always check the entry requirements when travelling internationally.

There are health requirements we need to look at and travel advisories for the destination that you want to travel to as well as visa requirements. You can go to travel.gc.ca and see any of these advisories by our federal government.”

She recommends researching and planning according to the requirements to ensure no problems come up last minute or during the trip.

Book early

Booking well in advance can lead to better pricing and more flexibility. “The further out you book, the better for pricing and planning. Inventory is going to be better and then it gives you a chance to budget and also

anticipate that excitement going for longer,” shared Jane. Early planning also opens the door to unique destinations. Beck notes that African safaris and Japan are gaining popularity among Camrosians, while interest in Canadian travel is also rising. “Especially as snowbirds are pivoting away from the States, they are looking into Canada, the Maritimes have hit an uptick of interest, Newfoundland for one has been a very popular ask recently.”

Travel insurance

Beck stresses the importance of insurance during the planning stage.

“Something that is really important to think about while you are in the planning stages is to also ask yourself what kind of travel insurance you will need. Emergency medical insurance is a must in my opinion whenever you are travelling and we are actually seeing some of the tour companies insist on seeing proof of emergency medical,” she explained. With flight cancellations, lost luggage and delays on the rise, she also recommends coverage to protect against unexpected disruptions.

Travel preferences can vary widely, from allinclusive resorts suited for families to culturally rich destinations like Japan or Portugal for solo travellers.

While planning can feel overwhelming, Beck says mindful preparation can make all the difference, helping travellers enjoy a smoother, more stress-free experience from start to finish.

Recognize your emotions, lean on support from family and friends, talk about it, get additional help if needed, and give yourself time.

Sticking to new goals

The end of yet another year is a time for reflection on the highs and lows of the year and to take stock of all that was learned. A new year comes with the opportunity to start fresh, which makes it a great time to plan for new goals for the upcoming year.

According to studies shared by Statistics Canada and Western University most Canadian adults abandon their new year’s resolutions within the first few months, because they set unattainable goals for themselves.

Among the most popular, health and financial goals continue to be top of the list. National statistics consistently show that Canadians most often aim to improve physical health, manage stress or strengthen their finances in the year ahead. The challenge, however, is not setting goals, it’s sticking to them.

Reflection is a key first step in setting realistic goals, as it helps people identify what actually fits their lives rather than chasing vague resolutions.

Secondly, setting attainable goals that are more sustainable than extreme changes can lead to success. Small adjustments, such as building regular movement into a weekly routine or planning meals ahead of time, are easier to maintain and less likely to be abandoned early in the year.

Financial goals follow a similar pattern. Whether it’s paying down debt, saving more or creating a household budget, planning and tracking are key.

New to Nordlys Film Festival

The 2026 version of the Nordlys Film and Arts Festival kicks off February 13 to 16 at the Bailey Theatre.

Passionate volunteers work hard to plan this grassroots event with fans of the festival anticipating returning to it year after year. It’s an opportunity for many to reconnect with friends that they only get to see during this cultural event.

The festival comes from humble beginnings. The Olson family wanted to do something together on the Family Day weekend and decided to have their own film festival watching movies from all over the world in their home, fondly calling it The Pretty Hill Film Festival, named after the hill on which they live. By year 10, they had 170 people sign their guest book.

When the festival outgrew their home, a society was formed and the event was moved to Camrose in 2010 under the name of the Nordlys Film and Arts Festival. The word nordlys means “northern lights” in Norwegian and honours the Scandinavian founders of the area. The event has continued to grow and attracts attendees from near and far.

This year they are expanding the scope of the festival with their first ever live stage performance, Evie and Alfie, a British romantic comedy play. The weekend will also feature various live musical performances at Café Voltaire, a throwback name that stuck from the early days of the festival being hosted in the Olson home.

The committee has been working hard at selecting the films for the upcoming lineup. Attendees can expect diverse films from around the world with titles like Folktales, A Poet and Aisha’s Story.

There will also be opportunities to connect with special guests and talented local performers and artisans.

Be a crusader for cornhole

The popular game of cornhole is one of skill, accuracy and strategy as you toss bags towards two boards placed 27 feet apart with the team reaching 21 points first being the winners. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or never tossed a bag before, you have the opportunity to play with the new league, Crusaders Cornhole.

A normal cornhole season runs from September through May. This new league is about to launch in Camrose on January 7 at 6:30 p.m. located at the Mirror Lake Centre auditorium. It will run most Wednesdays.

Cornhole is a great game for people of almost any age.

Crusaders Cornhole is open to everyone over the age of 10, with children under 14 to be supervised by their parents. According to league organizers, Christa Jones and Chris Parfett, they will be starting the first few months by hosting Swithcholio Cornhole event nights which don’t require pre-determined teams or partners. Participants can come solo and will play four round robin games with a different partner each game against other teams.

Depending on how well you play as an individual in the round robin portion, it will determine who your permanent partner is in the

double elimination tournament. Players are guaranteed at least six games per night.

This league is great for anyone looking to remain active and socialize. It’s also geared towards those who are looking to improve their skill and strategy, you can watch your stats and move up in the Canadian Cornhole circuit. Cornhole is an independent skill based sport, so regardless of your personal goals, you will enjoy being a Crusader.

There are regular cornhole tournaments that are fun throughout Alberta and Canada that players can find on the Scoreholio app to register for. The Camrose league looks to grow their base of participants before eventually organizing weekend tournaments.

Currently there are more than 22 people registered for the January 7 launch event.

They’ve capped the registration for the launch to 34, but, moving forward, can host up to 40 or 50 people if there is enough interest. A portion of the weekly registration fees will go towards prizes for the top three teams.

Fontaine calls his 1970 GTO “The Grudge”

Kelly Fontaine owns a 1970 Pontiac GTO, a longrunning project that’s been evolving for more than four decades. Fontaine bought the car back in 1984, but it wasn’t quite the firebreathing machine it is today.

“This car has been totally modified, there’s not much of it that is stock anymore. I have owned this car since 1984, my wife and I met and I had owned this car then so we have been keeping it as a keepsake for the family since and I’ve been working on it bit by bit since,” he shared.

When it first came on the market, the 1970 GTO was one of Pontiac’s strongest statements in the muscle car wars. With its bold styling, serious power options, it garnered the reputation for its aggressive looks and torqueheavy engines. Fontaine’s car originally wore a gold paint job with a brown roof but not long after buying it, he painted it orange, then parked it when work took him away. The GTO sat in storage for about 22 years before life brought him back home, and back to the car.

The biggest change from stock sits under the hood. The original GTO engines were no slouch, but Fontaine went far beyond the factory specs. The car now runs a 427 cubic-inch small block Chevy based on an aftermarket Dart block with siamesed cylinders.

Topping it off is a 671 blower and an Enderle-style air

“It can burn somewhere about 880 horsepower,” said Fontaine, highlighting how the power goes far beyond anything Pontiac engineers could have imagined in 1970.

Power like that can only be pulled off with the right drivetrain.

Originally, GTOs came with manual transmissions or traditional automatics designed for street duty.

With the right exhaust setup, a 1970 GTO could idle quietly, but hit the gas, and the roar of the 400-cubic inch V8 would wake the entire block.

overdrive, a much stronger unit. The choice was driven by the rear end, which is a fabricated Ford 9-inch.

“The reason I went with that transmission is because the rear-end that it has on it is a pro-fab Ford 9 inch. It had 4.86 gears, so it needed to have a little more gearing for it to drive under certain rpm range on the highways,” said Fontaine.

“The rear tires are pretty unique, they are 22 inches wide and 33 inches tall, with a 10 inch on the outside and 5 and half inch dish on the back and that is joined to a Ford 9 inch in the back. These are probably the biggest tires you can get out here in Canada,” he continued.

The frame and suspension have been completely reworked, with the body lowered two inches and the entire car sitting about three and a half inches lower than stock. Fontaine also stretched the wheelbase from the factory 114 inches to 118 inches, improving weight transfer and stability when the car hooks up.

The paint is a bright blue borrowed from a 2005

GMC truck, with a subtle purple flip, all sprayed and polished by Fontaine himself. The stripes are inspired by the GTO Judge, but reversed. He calls it the “Grudge.”

That settles it. The GTO isn’t going anywhere.

Education choice in rural Alberta

In communities across the Camrose constituency and rural Alberta, families care deeply about a strong public education system and the freedom to choose the learning environment that best suits their child. These are not competing values; in Alberta, they work together.

Our province is home to one of the most diverse education systems in Canada. Families can choose public, separate, francophone, charter, home schooling, or independent schools. These options matter because kids aren’t one-sizefits-all. Some students thrive in a smaller setting. Others need specialized supports, curriculums that build on their unique talents, or programming aligned to their family’s values. In every case, the goal is to set Alberta students up for success.

That’s why I’m so excited about the progress we’re seeing at the Holden Rural Academy, a public charter school serving local students. It’s a community-driven example of what choice can look like in a rural setting – giving students a strong foundational education with the option to participate in off-campus afternoon projects and a hands-on agricultural program where students learn to plant, harvest, process, and sell local produce or learn the skill of working on vehicles at a local shop. Some chose to gain skills in a bakery. There are so many choices in rural Alberta.

I’m encouraged to see the Hardisty Community Charter School Association formally submit its application to bring a charter school back to the community. If approved, this Kindergarten to Grade 6 school would follow Alberta’s curriculum while offering a distinct focus on entrepreneurial learning, rural leadership, and practical life skills. It’s another great example of parents and neighbours stepping up to create new opportunities for our students.

I’m also proud to see the Cornerstone Christian Academy (CCA) in Kingman continuing to offer local families the ability to pursue educational options that integrate faith, life, and learning. Christian values are at the core of who we are as rural Albertans. Honesty, integrity, selflessness, and the understanding that parents are best suited to guide the future of their children are values instilled in us through faith. With a mission to challenge students through a Christ-centred education to pursue a life of godly character and service to others, CCA is helping raise the next generation with a strong moral foundation.

While United Conservatives remain committed to providing parents with choice in education, we’ll never stop supporting a strong public education system. Public schools serve every child, in every community, and Alberta continues to invest in classroom spaces to meet capacity challenges after rapid population growth in recent years. We’re investing $8.6 billion to build 130 new schools and provide 109 modular classrooms. We’re also addressing staffing challenges with a commitment to hire 3,000 new teachers and 1,500 educational assistants over the next three years.

United Conservatives believe parents, not unelected bureaucrats, are best suited to guide their children’s future. Alberta is home to major urban centres and remote northern hamlets. We’re energy workers, farmers, social workers, artists, loggers, nurses, engineers, first responders, and so much more. Our communities are diverse in their size, economy, and heritage. This is not a one-size-fits-all province, and we deserve an education system that respects who we are, prepares our students for the jobs of tomorrow, and respects parents.

Refs take Viking Cup seriously

Submitted by Murray Green - Viking Cup Writer An important aspect of planning a tournament like the Viking Cup is finding exceptional on-ice officials.

“For the officials selected to the Viking Cup, it is a huge honour. On-ice officials work hard to be selected for prestigious opportunities. For many of these officials it isn’t their first international tournament they have officiated,” explained Lucas Hudec, Camrose Minor Hockey referee-in-chief and Viking Cup Officials and Rules committee chair. “Tournaments like these are given to officials based on not only their on-ice performance, but also their efforts off-ice where they work as assignors, supervisors, mentors and take on leadership roles within the officiating community,” Lucas shared.

Lucas is an official from Camrose County. The remaining officials are from Leduc, Lacombe, Red Deer, Wetaskiwin, Edmonton and St. Albert.

“Every game an official works, helps them develop as an official. Games like these can specifically help with communication when officials need to communicate with teams who may not be familiar with Canadian hockey rules and standards. The elevated nature of this event will be something that is exciting for officials to be part of. As the tournament progresses, the officials will look to elevate themselves with the goal of being selected to work a medal game on the final day,” Lucas said about the process.

“Twelve officials will proudly be representing the Edmonton and Red Deer regions. Together, they bring a wealth of experience from officiating including Sledge Hockey, ACAC, AJHL, U Sport, and the WHL— highlighting the depth of officiating talent in Alberta.

Beyond their work on the ice, these officials contribute as supervisors, assignors and referees‑in‑chief, while dedicating countless hours to mentoring and supporting the next generation,” added Sanjeev Bhagrath, an on-ice official from Edmonton. “For myself, being selected is a meaningful recognition of the dedication and commitment I have invested in officiating. This tournament offers the unique opportunity to officiate players from other leagues and countries, providing me with exposure and experience beyond Alberta,” he shared.

“It is an incredible honour to step onto the ice at the Viking Cup—a tournament celebrated for its international competitive spirit and welcoming community atmosphere. I vividly remember watching from the stands as a youth, dreaming of one day being part of this event. To now be selected makes the opportunity to officiate here especially significant and deeply personal,” said Sanjeev.

The Camrose Animal Alliance Rescue Society (CAARS) is another local animal shelter that is facing overcrowding, a growing trend around the province.

This issue is incredibly important, and the more the community understands the pressure rescues and shelters are under, the more support animals in care can receive.

Often an aspect of working or volunteering in a shelter/rescue is the spread of inaccurate information on social media, leading to negativity directed at organizations doing the best they can with the limited resources they have. Some organizations have seen an increase in unpleasant conversations directed to staff and volunteers when they explain that they don’t have the space to take in more animals. This makes their work even more difficult.

Sonja Bott CAARS president said, “We are seeing a significant increase in surrender requests, especially from individuals and families who are struggling financially. Families seeking cheaper rent in turn cannot have animals. Many are unable to keep up with the rising costs of food, vet care, and housing.”

This is often leaving CAARS at or near capacity, which makes it difficult for them to take in new animals, especially in urgent cases. Sonja believes that accessible veterinary services and low-cost spay/neuter programs would make a massive difference.

CAARS often find that many people surrender their animals due to the lack of affordability of food and cat litter.

Research and awareness around responsible pet ownership, including planning for the financial responsibility of animals could help so that surrendering pets isn’t the only option.

Like many rescues and shelters, donations of food, litter and vet-care funds are always needed and appreciated. Volunteers, including fosters (even on a short term basis), help keep animals safe and out of crisis. Local businesses are encouraged to consider sponsoring vet bills, host food drives or adoption events would go a long way to help CAARS and the animals they support. Jennifer “Faye” Gaumont (née Dougall)

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Heather Bradford, who passed away surrounded by her family on Thursday, December 18, 2025, at the age of 59.

She leaves behind her husband Alan; children Richard (Lisa), Christina (Gary) and Ryan; grandchildren Carson, Ethan, Seanna, Jayden, Jordyn and Jade; her father Donald McDonald; brother Doug McDonald; her parents-in-law Alan and Beryl; numerous family and friends.

Heather was predeceased by her mother Eleanor.

Heather was born on September 26, 1966, in Hamilton, Ontario.

She was a devoted wife of 36 years to Alan and touched the lives of whomever she met with her kindness. She was known for her humour, generosity and her love for her family.

She had a passion for watching hockey, shopping (and anything on sale), spending time with her family, and will be remembered most for her love of her grandchildren. She will be forever loved, deeply missed and never forgotten.

A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at Weber’s Mount Pleasant Chapel, Camrose, with Rev. Helen Reed officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Victoria (Vikki) Kostuk

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Victoria (Vikki) Kostuk of Edmonton, Alberta, on December 17, 2025, at the age of 73 years.

Vikki will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Tanya (fiancée Darrel Best) and Bobbie; brother Frank (Diana) Tchir and Lawrence (Marie) Tchir; brother-inlaw Wayne Hamblin; goddaughter Megan Honey; numerous nieces, nephews, family and best friends Hazel and Brian Honey.

She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Robert, on December 3, 2023; sister Sandra Hamblin in August 2023; father Fred Tchir in 1989; and her mother Annie Tchir in 2002.

A Divine Liturgy was held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, South Holden Farms, with Rev. Don Bodnar as celebrant. Interment will follow at the St. Mary’s Church Cemetery.

June 27, 1952 ~ December 14, 2025 Jennifer Faye Dougall was born on June 27, 1952, at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, to John and Shirley Dougall. Faye spent her first few years growing up on a farm near Plenty, Saskatchewan. Faye was an only child, but she had plenty of company with her dog Lady, her cats, friends and close cousins, with whom she spent many hours on the farm and at the lake. Faye moved to Plenty, Saskatchewan, as a child where she attended school and graduated as valedictorian.

Faye attended the University of Saskatchewan Faculty of Education. During this time, her friend Lynda, who had moved to Alberta, asked her to be maid of honour as she was marrying Bob, an Alberta Frenchman. She told Faye that Bob’s nephew would be picking her up from the airport when she flew in. Imagine Faye’s surprise when she was picked up from the airport by a dashing young man with a huge afro! Sparks flew, conversation deepened and by the end of the weekend, Faye and Léo were involved in a long-distance relationship. Less than one year later, Faye and Léo were married in Alberta, on June 30, 1973. Léo moved to Saskatchewan, where he attended the U of S. Faye worked to put Léo through university much to the consternation of her parents, who worried she would end up putting her husband through school and then be abandoned.

Their fears were allayed, however, when they witnessed the deep love and commitment of Faye and Léo. Faye and Léo were blessed in 1977, with the birth of Adèle, followed by René in 1980, and Louis in 1982. The family lived in Saskatchewan until 1983, when the call to return to Alberta brought them back. The family settled on their forever place in 1985.

The next few years were a blur of raising kids, building their dream home and beginning their ministry of Education Unlimited.

Faye was always the silent partner, but she received everyone’s love and respect due to her quiet, kind, unassuming nature. Faye and Léo began their travelling as empty nesters and they spent the following 25 years visiting many places. Indeed, the last trip Faye went on was one they had been wanting to visit for many years – the Holy Land.

Faye’s world was her family. Her grandchildren – Rachel, Tamara, Carter and Caleb, Alix, Ben and Tim. There were many sleepovers, camping trips, boat rides and sporting events. They were her greatest joy. She was so excited to witness the marriage of her granddaughter Rachel to Joel this summer. Faye loved her family. The devastating loss of her beloved son Louis in 2021, changed her forever and we all witnessed her deep and lasting grief.

As we gather today to honour the life of Faye, we do not weep for her – she is safe in the arms of Jesus and blissfully reunited with those who have gone on before her. We rejoice in the knowledge that she will not experience any more pain here on earth. Although she has left a hole that will never be filled, we know that her faith has brought her home and we are comforted with that.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband Léo Gaumont; children Adèle (Trevor) Hoflin and René (Roxanne) Gaumont; and seven grandchildren. Faye was predeceased by her son Louis; and parents John and Shirley Dougall.

It is with great sadness in our hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Janette Rudzcki on December 22, 2025, at the age of 59 years.

Born on July 29, 1966, in Tofield, she is survived by her sister Sandra (Gerry) Ralph; brother Barry (Kelly) Rudzcki; brother-in-law Ed; and her nieces Karly and Alyssa Stefiszyn.

Janette was predeceased by her father Victor; mother Sylvia; and her sister Judy.

Janette lived a quiet, thoughtful life, marked by kindness and a deep love for those around her. Though solitary by nature, she cared deeply for people and shared close, meaningful bonds with her small circle of friends and her beloved family. Janette loved to garden and she also found great joy in animals (her critters) and in the quiet peace of farm life she cherished so much. An avid reader, Janette could often be found with a book in hand or happily working through a crossword. Janette was also an excellent cook and found great joy in cooking for others.

Gentle and unassuming, she never sought the spotlight, yet her calm presence and warmth were felt by all who knew her.

She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.

A celebration of Janette’s life will be announced at a later date.

Beckett Bruce Burnstad

November 23, 2015 ~ December 19, 2025 Beckett Bruce Burnstad of Round Hill, Alberta, ran through the gates of Heaven on December 19, 2025. In our hearts, we know that he is racing across the green soccer pitch in the sky, scoring goals and beaming with joy.

Beckett “the most handsomest” Burnstad was a witty, goofy, golden ray of sunshine. He lived his life full of Grace, Courage and Compassion. In the ten years that Beckett was with us, he left a giant and profound impact on everyone he met. His captivating smile and gentle soul brought joy and love to those who shared his journey.

He passed away in his mother’s loving arms, surrounded by his beloved family and friends.

On December 3, the Camrose & District Chamber of Commerce hosted five speakers, who represented their local not-forprofit organizations and shared how they are working towards addressing the needs of the community.

The event began with individual presentations before a panel-style Q. and A. CAFCL

CEO Robin Good shared how Camrose Association for Community Living (CAFCL) supports children, youth, adults, and families facing developmental disabilities, acquired brain injuries, mental health issues or other barriers in the community. CAFCL offers 14 programs, serving Camrose and area.

“What a lot of people don’t know about us is that we don’t just serve Camrose, we serve a large geographic area, and our focus is on meeting people where they are and supporting individuals and families facing barriers through every stage of life,” said Good.

Some of their most important programs include the residential living with 24-hour staffing, outreach support for adults living independently, and youth programs that build job skills and confidence.

Good highlighted their Healthy Families program for parents and children under six, summer camps, and SingAble, an inclusive

community choir open to all ages and abilities.

CAFCL currently serves approximately 600 people annually, mainly through the Healthy Families program.

Camrose Neighbor Aid

Director Ja mie Ocampos shared about the Camrose Neighbor Aid, also known as the Food Bank, but provides much more than food supports.

“We are the food bank, but we are so much more than that. We’re seeing record numbers this year, and our focus is on making sure people have food, basic necessities, and dignity during some of the hardest times in their lives,” said Ocampos.

The organization offers emergency financial assistance for rent, utilities, and medical needs, medical transportation, and partners with schools to support breakfast programs.

Neighbor Aid also operates two weekly soup kitchens, distributes daily donated bread, and is launching free cooking classes with CAFCL in January.

“We are also part of the Battle River School Division, helping work with six of their schools to feed children through their breakfast program,” she added.

Ocampos noted the dramatic increase in demand, with over 400 food hampers distributed in the month of November alone.

“Last year, our numbers were actually about 250 for November and

this year it was 406,” said Ocampos.

“We are able to run this program because of the generosity of the community who hosts food drives for us, give monetary donations so we can buy product, grants from different organizations and every supermarket in town who gives us reclamation daily,” she shared.

When asked how the community can continue to support Neighbor Aid, Ocampos said, “We have our social media up and running and if people can share us on there or support us in any way through food drive donations or monetary donations or by sending us volunteers to be medical drivers, that is the best ways you can help us.”

Battle River Lending Place Society

Executive director Julie Girard shared how the organization helps the community members through free lending of mobility and medical equipment, including wheelchairs, walkers, and hospital beds.

“The number one reason people come to us is because they want to come home, and sometimes they can’t unless they have the right equipment, that’s what we focus on, making it possible for people to live at home with dignity,” said Girard.

In its first year, the organization helped hundreds of people across the region. Girard emphasized the importance of community donations and volun-

teer support and highlighted the ongoing “Under One Roof” campaign to create a larger, centralized facility to better serve the community.

“We have made lots of progress, we have raised the roof through the spring.

We have great commitment from a lot of contractors and we love this community so much. We are happy that we can be here and be part of it with you,” said Girard.

“In our very first year, 451 people were helped through lending equipment,” continued Girard.

“This year, we have completed 370 files and have 571 active files. These are people out in the community that have already borrowed equipment,” emphasizing how great the need for medical equipment is in the Battle River region.

In March, the organization achieved their charitable status.

The Open Doors

Executive director Mylene Garcia presented to the attendees and shared the work that her organization does. The Open Doors provides regional support services for youth, adults, and families. Its programs focus on mental health support, justice and restorative programs, employment and life skills development, and food security. It provides outreach, crisis navigation, and educational programs in rural communities where access to services can be limited.

Garcia shared how the

organization has transitioned through some recent changes. “For more than 25 years, we have been one of the region’s most accessible points of support for youth, families, and adults facing challenges,” said Garcia.

“People come to us not because we replace therapists or other services, but because we listen without judgment and walk alongside them as they navigate what they’re facing.”

When asked about the biggest challenges the organization is currently facing Garcia shared, “The changing political climate, because with the change in political climate comes a change in community priorities. Being an organization that is 90 per cent dependent on grants, whether it’s federal or provincial when new rules are set out they can pose big hurdles.”

Special Olympics Carol Wideman from Special Olympics shared that the athletic organization has been serving about 120 athletes with intellectual disabilities. The organization offers year-round sports, tournaments, and opportunities to compete at provincial and national levels.

“We do believe that people with an intellectual disability can and will succeed when they are given the opportunity,” said Wideman.

All programs are volunteer-run, and the organization emphasizes the community’s role in fostering true inclusion.

“Special Olympics truly is a catalyst for social change, our program helps build self-confidence and self-esteem in our athletes and it does make a more inclusive society. In Camrose, what I see when it comes to inclusion, is not our athletes going out, but it is the community coming in and walking alongside them and being a part of our athlete’s life, that to me is inclusion,” said Wideman.

She shared that the biggest goal for Special Olympics Camrose in the next couple of years is sustainability – they continue to look for volunteers for their sports programs.

The panel shed a light on the collective impact of Camrose’s not-for-profit organizations and the ongoing support needed from volunteers, sponsors, and the community to continue their crucial work.

As much as the coming of a new year is a time to look forward to an exciting and uncertain future, it is also a time to look back and reflect on what has happened over the past year.

It has been an interesting year in the news. It has also been a year filled with touching stories, important milestones and significant changes locally. Here’s how those top stories unfolded this year in the pages of The Camrose Booster.

7 – The Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion became mortgage free. Legion members celebrated the burning of its mortgage at the end of last year, and officially the Legion will be starting 2025 without a mortgage.

14 – Battle River Quilters’ Guild presented a Quilt of Valour to Kevin Gillespie of Camrose, who spent 12 years in the Navy.

21 – The second half of the season of sports has arrived at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus for the 2024-25 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference year. Vikings battled with Briercrest this past weekend.

21 – Camrose Police Services, Operation Cold Start began in Camrose as of January 20. This operation aims to reduce the number of warm-up car thefts that happen in Camrose. Warm-up thefts are thefts that happen when a car is left running and unattended. Officers will be patrolling many areas through Camrose as part of this week-long operation.

21 – The Camrose Kodiaks have recorded three straight victories in the new year by adding a 4-2 win over Canmore Eagles and a 3-2 win in overtime over Calgary Canucks during Alberta Junior Hockey League play January 10 and 11.

28 – Danny (Isaac Weimer) and Sandy (Ashley Kambeitz) shared a moment of young love in the Churchmice Players production of Grease: The Musical. Opening night at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre was on February 6.

28 – Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose received $8,725 from the St. Mary’s Hospital, Camrose Foundation for the purchase of a Vein Finder machine for the hospital.

Many patients, especially chemotherapy patients, have poor veins, which impacts the insertion of an IV. A vein finder allows the nurse to see the vein under the skin clearly to insert an IV. 28 – The arts and culture scene in Camrose was supported by the Camrose Arts Council, which invested $39,050 in a wide array of initiatives.

February 4 – The Battle River Lending Place has completed its first year serving Camrose and the surrounding area, helping residents easily access medical equipment such as crutches, walkers, and bathroom chairs.

4 – Blain Fowler of the Camrose Booster presented bursaries to Augustana students Chad Nichol, Amelia Gurski and Erin Dorish on January 28.

4 – The Camrose Kodiaks have replaced a five-game winning streak with a three game losing streak in Alberta Junior Hockey League play. They lost 5-1 to Drumheller, 4-1 to Drayton Valley and 3-2 to Olds in a shootout, January 21, 25 and 26.

11 – Camrose County helped the Orr family celebrate a generational honour with a Century Farm Award for homesteading on the land for about 102 years.

11 – Camrose County agreed to develop a Cemetery Assistance Grant to organizations that are trying to keep up current, old, and abandoned cemeteries within the County.

25 – The Augustana women’s volleyball team placed second at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference championships in Camrose and advanced to nationals in Oshawa, ON. 25 – Teri Bryant, chief firearms officer for Alberta, was in Camrose for the Hunt Mania Sportsman Show and met MLA Jackie Lovely to discuss her role.

25 – One of Camrose’s own, Bob Bailey, École Charlie Killam School teacher and music director, was nominated for the 2024 MusiCounts Teacher of the Year Award, presented by Anthem Entertainment–an incredible honour bestowed upon teachers who advocate for students’ accessibility to and love for music.

April 1 – A Canadian election, the 45th general election, has been called for April 28.

1 – Battle of the Badges was held on March 22. It was a rough one on the ice, both squads went toe to toe, but the Police team had 19 penalties before the intermission. The onlookers enjoyed pizza and some blue and red donuts in the spirit of the battle.

1 – Members of the Phoenix Academy Players in Camrose had fun singing and acting in Musicville, a children’s musical, on the Bailey Theatre stage on March 23. The adventure took Maiden Melody and Radical Rhythm on a journey to save their town from the Sorcerer of Silence.

8 – Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose recieved a lift from the staff of Vision Credit Union. The Ladies’ Auxiliary was actively seeking funding for the purchase of four Sara Stedy Active Lifts at a total cost of $7,741. A grant from the Helping Hands fund from the Vision Credit Union made the lift purchase a reality.

8 – On March 26, Verna Blumhagen (nee Toth) celebrated her 100th birthday. Verna has witnessed a century of change, and she remains as active and energetic as ever. She celebrated her birthday at Deer Meadows in Camrose, where she resides, surrounded by her family and friends.

1 – From 1932 to 1962, Duggan’s Foodland was the place to get all of your groceries. In June, at the Main Street Pocket Park (the former site of Pop’Lar Books and Max McLean’s Men’s Wear, on the wall of the south building facing north), the old Duggan’s Foodland sign from nearly 100 years ago was restored.

1 – This year, Lemonade Day had young entrepreneurs getting very creative as they battled the high winds to get their stands ready for the day. Many of the children participating used sweet spots provided by several local businesses to place their stands in busy locations. The winner of the Entrepreneur of the Year Award was Thor Guttormsson.

1 – Harper Johnson admires artists who find beauty in the mundane. This was her third year participating in Art Club.

8 – Pierre Poilievre opened the doors of his Camrose campaign office on July 2, at 6008-48 Avenue. The community gathered to hear him speak about his plans for the Battle River-Crowfoot riding.

8 – Blessed Carlo Acutis Catholic School finally opened. The school administration team received the keys and occupancy permit at the end of June. The school is set to open in September and is now working on launching their new social media accounts for updates.

8 – The City of Camrose has noticed an increase in the number of homeless individuals in the community in the past couple of years. In response to the crisis, the City decided to use a multi-agency strategy aimed at prevention, intervention and long-term support.

15 – At the City Council meeting on July 7, council decided to update the Water Restrictions Bylaws to make the water conservation efforts more effective during periods of drought.

15 – It’s been a successful season for outdoor community soccer for the Camrose Vikings. The U19 boys’ team won gold at provincials in Leduc, July 4 to 6.

According to Jared Litvak, who’s been coaching soccer for close to 10 years, he’s very proud of this team.

15 – Longtime Camrose resident Elisabeth (Beth) Roy turned 103 years young on July 19. Born in Saskatchewan to Minda and William Squires in 1922, Beth came from humble beginnings.

22 – Elwyn Lock is a truly interesting man with vast life experiences. Every year on his birthday he sets a new goal to live another 20 years. It is his positive mindset and attitude at 102 that gives this man a reason to get up every morning.

29 – The University of Alberta’s (U of A) rural family medicine residency program officially began in Camrose on July 1, marking the start of a new training model designed to train rural physicians directly in the community.

29 – The City of Camrose has updated their Dog Licence Bylaw, the new changes will come into effect in January 2026. Under the new bylaw, dog owners no longer need to renew their licences annually, instead their dog licence will now be valid for their furry friend’s lifetime.

29 – The SkyHawks did many tricks in the sky. Three team members formed a circle as they gracefully glided down towards the ground.

August 5 – Residents have a new way to explore the history of Camrose. Two selfguided historic walking tours, created by Ross Shuman and David Roth, are now available on the Bailey Theatre website. One tour covers commercial buildings along the north side of 48 Avenue in the downtown area.

5 – A packed crowd filled the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on July 29 to hear from candidates vying to represent Battle RiverCrowfoot in the upcoming federal by-election. Hosted by the Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce, the forum gave voters a rare opportunity to compare platforms from across the political spectrum.

5 – Camrose Public Library summer students rode the Book Bike in true Western fashion during the Kickin’ Country Parade 12 – Recyclers in Camrose may have noticed something new at the Recycling Depot. Only a few months ago residents had to bring their recycling and sort it into designated boxes.

Now these bins have been replaced by some purple ones.

12 – Travis Dolter performed three sets at the Coors Light Saloon at BVJ. He played a combination of covers and original tunes that were all well received.

12 – Students from the Battle River School Division (BRSD) celebrated a major milestone on July 31 as 42 students graduated from this year’s Reading University program. Held each July, the program offers Grade 2 to 4 students extra time and support to build reading confidence and sharpen literacy skills.

19 – The City of Camrose has secured an additional $2.5 million from the Government of Alberta to expand and upgrade the Wastewater Treatment Plant. “By investing

in Camrose’s Wastewater Treatment Plant, we are creating the building blocks for Camrose to grow and thrive with the utilities we need,” shared Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely.

19 – Camrose Heritage Day takes place every year on the fourth Saturday in August. Citizens enjoy an opportunity to connect with their roots and learn about the history of Camrose as a community. This year it took place on August 23.

19 – To improve the quality and accessibility of public transportation, the Camrose City Council approved revisions to the current route of the Community Bus. The update comes after reviewing ridership patterns and feedback from users.

19 – Camrose City Council approved the new Community Standards Bylaw on August 11, regular council meeting. Under the rules, property owners are required to keep yards free of excessive weeds, garbage, discarded materials and derelict vehicles.

26 – On August 18, Pierre Poilievre of the Conservative Party of Canada won the Battle RiverCrowfoot by-election with 80.9 per cent of the vote.

Out of 51,085 ballots cast, Poilievre received 41,308 votes, securing a clear victory.

16 – Camrose Helps and United Way Central Alberta hosted a poverty simulation at the Messiah Lutheran Church. “The poverty simulation experience is designed to help participants begin to understand what it might be like to live in a typical lowincome family trying to survive from month to month,” shared Kendra Hansen, health promotion facilitator with Primary Care Alberta.

16 – The Fire Training Grounds project, located off Township Road 464 near the City lagoons, is moving forward. The contractor has completed a retention pond with a storage capacity of about 24,000 gallons, which will serve as the primary water source during live fire training.

23 – The Camrose & District Chamber of Commerce partnered with City of Camrose, Camrose County and Community Futures East Central Alberta, to host Thrive Forward, a fullday business symposium on October 17 in the auditorium of Mirror Lake Centre from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

30 – City council narrowly approved a plan that will require all tenants’ utility accounts to be in the name of the property owner by the end of 2029. For more information and details, visit camrose.ca 30 – The Camrose Transit Advisory Committee (CTAC) presented its 2025 annual report to city council on September 22, describing a year of heavier workload, member shortages and growing pressure on local transit services.

30 – A provincial safety review of Highway 21 between Highway 13 and Highway 625 has now been completed. The study recommends a list of interim upgrades, but does not recommend full twinning.

30 – Centra Cam Vocational Training Association held its annual general meeting September 24. Centra Cam now has 30 volunteer placements, 57 employment positions and serves 97 individuals.

“We are having our annual Kidney Gala, this year there is a bit of a twist, we are doing a hitea affair instead of your typical evening event,” said Manuel Escoto, special projects manager at the Kidney Foundation Northern Alberta and Territories Branch. “We will be hosting this at the Bailey Theatre.”

14 – On October 3, the Senior Centre held a community information fair in the auditorium. The goal of the event was to share services and activities within Camrose.

14 – Battle River Research Group (BRRG) hosted a free workshop for local producers, “Water on the Land: Managing Wetlands for Farm and Community Resilience.” The workshop featured speakers from four organizations who covered a variety of topics related to wetlands, agriculture, and water management.

Their motto, “Healing hearts across Alberta, one tail wag at a time” reflects the role these dogs play in helping people feel calmer, more supported and less alone during difficult moments.

25 – Local firefighters from various communities from the City of Camrose and Camrose County were recognized on November 6 with an appreciation dinner. The evening began with the firefighters being marched in by a piper and colour party prior to dinner and speeches. As a community, we appreciate all that fire departments do to protect and serve.

December 2 – École Camrose Composite High School held their annual Wall of Fame ceremony in the school library on November 21.

The honorees were, Kevin Keech, Victoria Thomsen, James Kuntz, and David Andreassen. Each one of them is more than worthy of the recognition they received.

2 – Thanks to the generous support from the St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary, the Hospital has acquired a new ventilator for the patients, similar to the one pictured above.

2 – The Bethany Group held its annual Faith and Aging Conference on November 7 at the Days Inn Norsemen in Camrose. The conference brings together professionals, caregivers and community members to explore how faith, compassion and understanding shape the way people approach care and wellness.

9 – The Recycling Council of Alberta recognizes the contributions of its members each year for their work in promoting waste reduction and resource conservation. This year, the City of Camrose, along with the City of Wetaskiwin, received the Education Leader Award for their efforts to protect the Battle River Watershed.

9 – Santa Claus and Olaf lit the trees on Main Street to officially mark the beginning of the Christmas season during Midnight Madness on Main Street.

9 – At the December 1 regular council meeting, mayor and council approved that a letter of support be provided by the City for the Camrose and District Family and Community Support Services (CDFCSS) grant application to the Rural Development Network’s (RDN) Reaching Home Grant.

9 – The St. Carlo Acutis (STCA) senior girls’ volleyball team are coming off a very successful season winning a provincial title. The girls carried an intensity into Championship. Winning the provincial title completed the journey this season for the girls.

16 – Every year, Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce recognizes the businesses and organizations in Camrose for making a positive impact to the economic growth of the region. The recipients of the awards are chosen from a selection of nominations submitted by the community members.

16 – The Poppy Campaign is the largest fundraiser across Canada for the Royal Canadian Legion.

The money raised from the donations is allocated for direct assistance for veterans and their families. This year, the Poppy Fund raised approximately $22,000 in Camrose and area.

2025 in review: Standing strong for Canadians By the Hon. Pierre Poilievre, MP for Battle River-Crowfoot and Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.

As 2025 draws to a close, we have a chance to reflect on a remarkable year in the history of our province and our nation.

In the last federal election, Conservatives were proud to bring Canadians a message of hope. From coast to coast to coast, we fought hard to restore the Canadian promise: a country where anybody from anywhere can achieve anything and hard work gets you a great life, with an affordable home on a safe street. And on every major policy issue, both before and after the election Conservatives led the charge!

Because that message resonated with Canadians, and because of incredible candidates like Damien Kurek, Conservatives won the highest share of the vote since 1988. Although the result wasn’t the national victory so many hoped for, we returned to Ottawa with 24 more seats as an even stronger opposition in a minority parliament.

Then, we stepped up as His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition: opposing what is wrong, exposing what is hidden, and proposing what is in the national interest. We picked up right where we left off: holding the Liberals accountable not only for their words, but for their actions!

This year, we opposed the reckless Liberal policies that make life more expensive for Canadians: from inflationary deficit spending to the industrial carbon tax, food packaging tax and 17 cent/litre fuel standard tax that drive up the cost of the things you buy.

On crime, we brought real solutions to the chaos in disorder in our communities: proposing new legislation that would protect places of worship, crack down on intimate partner violence and ensure jail - not bail - for dangerous criminals.

On trade, we held Carney to account for failing on his central promise: to “handle” President Trump and “negotiate a win” on tariffs. Because of these Liberal failures, thousands of Canadians have to worry about putting food on the table as layoffs hit our once-proud steel, aluminum, automotive and forestry industries.

And on immigration, we fought to reform a broken system fraught with fraud and abuse, restore the value of Canadian citizenship, strengthen our border and end unacceptable leniency for non-citizens convicted of serious crimes.

2025 also brought me one of the most exciting and rewarding opportunities of my life: the chance to become Member of Parliament to Battle River-Crowfoot.

Although an unexpected turn, over many months, alongside an amazing local team, I worked hard to earn the trust and support of this hardworking, strong and resilient region. I am proud to represent you all, including the incredible men and women of CFB Wainwright, in our nation’s capital.

By the grace of God, we have made it through another year. As we look forward to 2026, my goals remain the same: providing national leadership on local issues like the cost of living, immigration, crime and trade. Together, we can build a self-reliant Canada with strong take-home pay, safe streets and secure borders - a country and community we are proud to call home.

Viking Cup officially kicks off

The 2026 version of the Viking Cup officially kicked off on December 28, with two games on day one. The first game saw action between the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) All-Stars and the Midland Warriors.

The SJHL team didn’t take long to show their dominance, coming out strong and scoring twice in the first.

Midland seemed to regroup for the second period and scored twice to tie the game. The SJHL team rebounded quickly with a third goal before eventually defeating Midland with a final score of 6 to 2.

Strong points for Midland were their goaltender stopping 48 of 54 shots on net and a lot of physicality throughout the game.

The evening game saw action between the Czechia Selects and the Augustana Vikings.

Prior to the opening face-off was the opening ceremony, with dignitaries in attendance.

The Selects found the back of the net first on a short-handed goal with just over six minutes remaining in the first period.

The game included a lot of physical and chippy play with the Selects dominating most of the game.

Just over the halfway mark of the second period, the Vikings scored their only goal of the game before the eventual loss to the opposition with a final score of 5 to 1.

Viking Cup to host Nebraska hockey

Located in Fremont, Nebraska, the Midland University Warriors play in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) within the Midwest College Hockey conference. This is a team known for its passionate play, highlighting what college hockey looks like outside the NCAA system.

Jan Dam is the team’s head coach. He has experience in various hockey roles having served as the director of player development for the Fremont Flyers and coach of the Flyers high school travel team in 2021-22.

“The Viking Cup is a great opportunity to showcase our program and ACHA as a whole. We are excited for the atmosphere and competition. I feel like teams and players are where they want to be at this point of the season confidence wise and we should be able to see some high-quality hockey, which we are very excited about at Midland University and we obviously are not taking this lightly and want to come home with success,” said Jan. Tommy Babb and Karl Grafelman are the leaders on offence for the Warriors.

Goaltender Liam Tereposky recorded all five wins for the Warriors with a 2.98 goals against average and a .911 save percentage. Midland has a couple of secret weapons in Czech players with Daniel Suda and David Jilek. The Warriors also have players from Germany, Slovakia, Ukraine, Sweden and Switzerland to give them some international flavour at the Viking Cup. The Battle River Community Foundation awarded $1,650 in grants to the Hardisty General Hospital Auxiliary Guild. According to Christie Love, “The Hardisty Auxiliary plays a crucial role in supporting local healthcare initiatives and enriching the lives of our long-term care (LTC) residents through fundraising and volunteer efforts. We are incredibly grateful for the funding we received from the Battle River Community Foundation, which has allowed us to acquire a much-needed ultrasound machine for the Hardisty Health Centre’s Emergency Depart-

ment. This vital equipment will not only enhance the quality of care provided by our dedicated medical professionals but also significantly benefit the community members of Hardisty. With this support, we are empowered to deliver timely and accurate diagnoses, ultimately ensuring the health and well-being of our community.”

The Guild takes as its commitment, according to its website, “to provide comfort and an improved quality of life for LTC residents … To promote and provide health related educational opportunities for young people … To encourage volunteerism…

The grants for the Hardisty General Hospital Auxiliary Guild are provided by the Darell and Winnie Goodrich Memorial Fund, the Hardisty Long Term Care Fund, and the Harold and Aimee Moody Memorial Fund. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support organizations in east central Alberta that benefit the local communities and positively impact the future.

Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds is kept intact, and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations.

Since it was founded in 1995, the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $9,891,300 to support charitable activities in the Battle River Region.

NEW YEAR’S EDITION Not to brag, but I have enough money to live comfortably for the rest of the year.

I'm wondering if I should make one last bad decision before this year ends. Just to thicken the plot.

If I'm awake when the clock hits midnight on New Year's Eve, trust me – it's for the bathroom.

My New Year's resolution is simply to remember to write 2026 instead of 2025.

At this point, a new year feels a bit risky.

How about we just get a certified preowned year?

This year, I'm going to stay up till midnight on New Year's Eve. Not to welcome the new year, just to make sure this one leaves.

Does anyone else feel like it's really irresponsible to start another year right after this one has ended?

I'm thinking it's borderline reckless.

I'm checking to make sure I'm signed up for the Wealthy and Healthy package for 2026 and not the Trials and Tribulations package.

I'm up for a New Year's Eve party as long as it starts at 6:00, ends by 8:00, involves food and doesn't require pants with a button and zipper.

As 2025 comes to an end, I encourage you to take care of yourself and avoid accidents as spare parts for older models like us are no longer in stock.

Me [at 10 p.m. on New Year's Eve}: "There's no way I am staying up till midnight for this."

Me [at midnight on any other random night of the week when I have to work the next day]: "Okay, I think I can power through one more episode without falling asleep."

Before I agree to 2026, I'd like to see some Terms and Conditions.

New Year's Resolutions are fine, but this time I'm going to do New Year's Suggestions. That's where I say what everyone ELSE should do in 2026.

I don't want a new year this time around. I want a gently used year – like a 2013, or maybe a 1995 if it's in good shape.

We're at the point in the holiday season when: • You either stay at home and endure a sibling bloodbath, or venture out and contract a new respiratory virus.

• You have holiday company, it's getting late, and you're hoping they leave soon … and then someone brings out a photo album and a board game …

• I realize I should probably eat a vegetable.

• I don't know if my pants are feeling loose because I'm losing weight or if the elastic has finally just given up the fight.

• We've entered the "fend for yourself" portion of the holiday season – just open a Tupperware container and hope for the best.

• I went to the store to look at discounted Christmas stuff, but apparently it's Valentine's Day now.

• I haven't had a proper meal since Christmas Day. At our house, we're running purely off potato chips and Ferrero Rochers.

• My kid is already bored with all the toys he got for Christmas … just in case you're considering having children.

• Anything still on the floor in 20 minutes is getting vacuumed up and will be gone forever.

• It could be Friday, it could be Wednesday, could be January already, who knows? Not me.

• It's not that I don't want to go back to work.

I'm just not ready to wake up early, wear normal clothes, drive or have any responsibilities yet.
