Presenter at this year’s Heritage Day Festival, Ingrid Urberg, PhD, (right) will be verbally painting a picture of the life Norwegian settlers faced in the Camrose area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Adventurous individuals and families made the ocean trip to the eastern shores of Canada or moved here from the American Midwest. Travel overland by rail, or a combination of horse and rail, then typically followed to chosen final destinations. Immigrants often had little choice but to adjust to the simple and challenging life which faced them on the prairies. The cherished formal dress that Ingrid is wearing is a bunad, a traditional Norwegian garment, originally owned and worn by her mom Patricia. Heritage Day in Camrose will be a wonderful way to let your mind drift back in time and reflect on the lives of ancestors and community founders from many decades in the past. On Saturday, August 22, Olivia Francoeur (left) will no doubt be imagining the excitement, yet trepidation that her great-great grandmother Anna Hansen experienced as she left Norway in 1903 to settle in Canada. The yellow dress that Olivia is shown wearing, saved by five generations of her family along with the steamer trunk positioned on the rail station weigh scale, made the long sea voyage over to Canada. Anna found happiness and love in the area, marrying Hans Huseby in 1905. It was the first wedding to take place in the community’s brand-new Messiah Lutheran Church.

Five-day musical camp at Messiah Lutheran Too Soon to Tell Some time ago, I had a delightful call with a 92-yearold Booster reader. He told me a story about the first issue of The Camrose Booster, back in November 1952. He remembers standing with Jack Ferris, owner of Ferris Motors, when my dad, Bill Fowler, walked across the street and handed him the first issue of The Camrose Booster. They chatted for a few minutes and

then my dad walked away. After my dad left, Jack turned to the man who told me the story and said, “A paper that you give away? There’s a business that won’t last long.” That was 74 years and 9 months ago. The Camrose Booster is still alive. (For the benefit of younger Booster readers, Ferris Motors, the Pontiac Buick dealership, was located in the building on 51st Street, presently occupied by KJF Law, and Booster Headquarters was located in the basement of the Fowler home on 58th Street.) *** The same reader also told me stories of the early days of what is now The Bethany Group. Originally, Bethany’s facility for older people was in Bawlf, operated by the Lutheran Church. When the Bethany facility moved to Camrose, the man I spoke with remembers that every year, his father and a couple of other men would spend a few days cutting wood for Bethany. Yes, the Bethany kitchen staff cooked on woodburning stoves. As he spoke, I was trying to imagine cooking for that many people on a wood-burning stove. I was also struck by how the community pitched in to make sure the facility had what it needed to fulfill its purpose. *** Here in Western Canada, we tend to think 100 years is a long time. We bulldoze buildings after a few decades. During my first trip to Eastern Canada, I was amazed in Ottawa to see buildings that were more than 100 years old. In Old Montreal, I saw buildings even older. In a museum, I was blown away looking at a letter that General Wolfe wrote to his wife on the night before he died in 1759, more than 200 years before. That trip changed my concept of “new” and “old.” Eastern Canada was nothing compared to Europe. In a Swiss village, visiting relatives, we attended the family church. The “new roof” dated back 300 years, almost twice as old as Canada. The church itself was built in the 600s. Not 600 years ago, but the year 600! What amazes me is not just that the church is still standing. It’s still in use every day. In the same village, aqueducts built by the Romans are still in use because they still work. That’s built to last! One of my strongest impressions in Europe was the sense of history alive and well and walking around on the same streets as current people. The past is always present. That must make a difference in how people think and feel and make decisions. *** I read that in 1976, when Americans were celebrating the two hundredth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, someone in the Chinese government was asked what he thought of the American experiment with a new form of government. The Chinese person replied that it was too soon to tell. It had only been a few hundred years. That would be the voice of someone with a few thousand years of history. This year, as Americans celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, I think the Chinese person had a point. Too soon to tell. *** I was once privileged to visit a fossil bed discovered by a friend, a science teacher in Grande Prairie. I held in my hand dinosaur fossils that were about 65 million years old, give or take a few million years. He said, “It does something to you to hold something that’s 65 million years old.” He was right. I looked at the fossil and couldn’t remember whatever I’d been distressed about recently. I also remembered that dinosaurs, who apparently roamed the earth for millions of years, are now extinct. *** Upset about something happening today? Nothing lasts forever. Taking a longer view can help put the present in perspective. *** I’d love to hear from you. Heritage Day festivities By Adan Shaikh

This year’s Heritage Day will focus on the Norwegian heritage that helped shape Camrose. People from many cultures and backgrounds call Camrose home today, but the community’s early traditions and development were strongly influenced by Norwegian settlers and homesteaders. The Heritage Day Committee will host this year’s celebration on August 22, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Bailey Theatre with an opening ceremony featuring speakers LeRoy Johnson and Ingrid Urberg, both of whom are personally connected to the Norwegian roots of Camrose. Refreshments will be provided by the Lefse House and Wild Rose Co-op. After the opening ceremony, visitors can choose between two ways to learn more about Camrose’s history. The first option is to visit open houses at the Camrose and District Centennial Museum, where Norwegian artifacts will be on display and the Bill Fowler Centre, where Daryl Olson, president of Sons of Norway Camrose, will be sharing the history of Camrose. Food trucks will be available at both locations for those looking to grab something to eat while visiting. The second option will be a guided walking tour led by local experts and members of the Heritage Day Committee. The walking tour will begin at noon at Messiah Lutheran

Church, where Jim and Penny Malmberg will share the history of the church. The group will then visit the Coldwell Banker building and the Servold House, where members of the Servold family will share the history of the historic home and stories about the people who grew up there. The next stop will be the former site of Chester Ronning’s home. Ronning was a prominent Camrose educator, politician and diplomat. He served as principal of Camrose Lutheran College and later held several diplomatic posts, including ambassador to China, India and Norway. The tour will continue to Old Main at the University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus. The building was constructed in 1911 and 1912 as the first building of Camrose Lutheran College and was used for classrooms and student housing. It remains an important part of the history of the Norwegian Lutheran community in Camrose. The final stop will be the Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Museum, where visitors can learn about the railway’s role in the development of the community. The Heritage Day Committee hopes the celebration will give residents an opportunity to connect with and learn more about the Norwegian families who helped build the Camrose that they reside in today.

The Camrose Sea Serpents swim club earned a total of 64 medals including 27 gold, 23 silver and 14 bronze medals from a Regional Swim Meet in Lloydminster. Coach Shane Gau reported that the competition in Provincial Zone C involved three clubs from Edmonton, plus Lloydminster, Vermilion, Fort Saskatchewan and Camrose. Gold medals were awarded to: Tyson Stetar, Courtney Stetar, Jana Gau, Pam Lake, Nathan Eriksson, Quin Fox, Alysia Dunning, Breanne Ward, Jacy Caruth, Pam Berg, Faryn Lyseng and Anna Eriksson.

WO2 Randy Torpe was named top Air Cadet Glider Pilot in all of Canada. The news was released in Camrose by Gordon Swanson, Chairman of the Camrose Rotary Club Civilian Committee of the Local Squadron of Royal Canadian Air Cadets. The award followed completion of a Glider Training Course in Rivers, Manitoba, where Warrant Officer Torpe received a scholarship from the Rotary Club. As top Glider Pilot in the nation, the Cadet qualified to attend a 5-day course in Albany, New York, offered by Schweitzer Corporation, a manufacturer of Glider Aircraft.

The Camrose Merchants advanced to the finals in the Western Division of the Western Major Fastball League as a result of two shutout wins in Calgary. Peter Brown went the route in both games for the wins. In the first game he allowed five hits and struck out seven. Brown and third baseman Ray MacMillan each hit home runs to account for all the scoring. In the second game Brown pitched a two-hitter, facing only 22 batters in the seven-inning contest. The only run in the game occurred in the first inning as catcher Gary Schurman doubled and was driven home by a single from the bat of Earle Berry.

Camrose Police Service completes migration to Emergency Services Internet (ESInet) Submitted

The Camrose Association for Community Living (CAFCL) held a donor appreciation event August 11, bringing supporters together for an afternoon with campers from Kandu Camp. The event gave donors an opportunity to see firsthand what their support helps make possible and learn more about the impact the camp has on children and youth in the community. Kandu and Leaders in Training (LIT) Campers helped make the afternoon special by baking treats for guests and singing a song as a thank you to the donors.

Kandu is a non-profit day camp that welcomes children and youth for a summer filled with recreation, sports, crafts and other activities. The program is designed to be inclusive of all children, including those with health and developmental concerns. Students from the Leaders in Training (LIT) Camp led the Kandu Camp students in a thoughtfully put together performance. CEO of CAFCL, Robin Good thanked the donors for their support and shared how their contributions go on to make a positive impact in the lives of the young campers, some of whom

are only able to attend the Camp because of their support. Kandu Camp runs throughout July and August for children ages seven to 15, while LIT Camp serves older youth ages 15 to 20. With a wide range of daily activities and an inclusive approach, the camps remain a popular summer program that fill up quickly each year. The donor appreciation event offered CAFCL an opportunity to highlight the people who help make the program possible while giving supporters a glimpse into the experiences their contributions help create for local children and youth.

The Camrose Police Service is proud to announce the successful completion of a significant modernization initiative within its 911 communications centre. On August 11, 2026, the Camrose Police Service’s Primary Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) officially migrated to the Emergency Services Internet (ESInet), marking the final stage of a comprehensive fiveyear restructuring project designed to enhance emergency communications and service delivery throughout our region. Over the past five years, the Camrose Police Service has undertaken a substantial transformation of its 911 operations to ensure the highest levels of reliability, efficiency, and service for the communities we serve. This restructuring included: • Procurement and implementation of a Next Generation 911 call handling system. • Adoption of nationally recognized standards for police and fire dispatch protocols. • Construction and development of a fully redundant backup 911 communications facility to ensure continuity of service during emergencies or outages. The completion of the migration to ESInet represents a major milestone in the evolution of emergency communications services. The ESInet is an advanced Internet Protocol (IP)-based network specifically designed for emergency telecommunications services and intended for use by interconnected public safety agencies. The purpose of an ESInet is to provide a robust and reliable network infrastructure capable of transporting 911 calls and additional data to i3-compliant PSAPs. The ESInet plays a critical role in enabling Next Generation Core Services, which are designed to significantly enhance emergency communications beyond the capabilities of legacy 911 systems. Key benefits of this modernized infrastructure include: • Improved responder safety. • Faster and more coordinated emergency response. • Enhanced resilience for rural, remote, and

Indigenous communities. • Economic benefits through infrastructure investment and modernization. • Alignment with the Government of Canada’s Emergency Management Strategy. “This achievement represents years of planning, collaboration, and dedication by numerous individuals and partner organizations,” said Inspector Rene Brisson. “Our investment in modern emergency communications infrastructure ensures that our community continues to receive reliable, efficient, and future-ready 911 services.” Chief of Police John Corbett added, “I am extremely proud of our Communications Centre staff and IT team for their dedication and tireless work in achieving this milestone. Their hard work makes exceptional 911 service possible every day, supporting a critical service that our citizens depend on during their most critical moments.” The successful completion of this restructuring and migration required a significant collective effort. From the procurement and implementation of specialized equipment, to extensive training for 911 personnel, collaboration with telecommunication partners, and the configuration and integration of multiple interconnected systems, the project involved countless hours of planning and execution. The Camrose Police Service extends its sincere appreciation to the project implementation team, whose expertise and commitment were instrumental in achieving this milestone. This celebration will also be an opportunity to explore the museum’s current exhibit, Powwow! Ochîwin The Origins. The travelling exhibit was created by Patrick and Marissa Mitsuing of Powwow Times. The exhibit explores the origins and meaning behind seven powwow dance styles through regalia and craftwork. Kinsmen Club hits the links for the first time By Nadine Leming

The inaugural Camrose Kinsmen Charity Golf Tournament is scheduled for August 21 at the Silver Creek Golf Course to raise funds to support community projects and needs. Kinsmen treasurer Scott Mitchell said, “There are a lot of golf tournaments out there, but we figured that they can be a major fundraiser for a lot of organizations.” This tournament features two separate hole-in-one chances to win $25,000 and bragging rights for the next year. The day also includes dinner, prizes, food and drink holes and much more. Free busing is being offered from the Encana Arena to the golf course, providing safe transportation. This should be a fun day out on the golf course supporting a great local service club. Registration starts at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. All of the proceeds from the tournament will go back into the community. The golf tournament is a new fundraiser for the club, but it won’t be replacing other fundraisers that the community enjoys participating in like the annual radio auction, Jaywalkers’ Jamboree popular burger booth and the returning Oktoberfest this fall. Scott commented, “We often get commended by Kin Canada for how much we actually do here as an organization.”

The annual Community Information and Registration night is coming up on September 10 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Camrose Community Centre. This event is an opportunity for local clubs, organizations and recreation businesses to showcase what they have to offer. In addition, attendees to this event can see what arts, sports or learning activities are available in Camrose. This is an opportunity for organizations to sign up participants and volunteers for fall programming or courses. Whether families are looking for activities for children, or seniors are looking for opportunities to volunteer or participate in the community, this event is for you. This year there are a large variety of organizations represented that include everything from the Camrose Branch-Alberta Genealogical Society, Camrose Neighbor Aid Center, Kidsport Camrose, Special Olympics Camrose and many more. For the last several years, this event has been organized by the Camrose Adult Learning Centre (CALC). CALC executive director Ron Baier said, “It’s the second most wonderful time of the year right after Christmas for me.” This is a passion project that Ron and his executive assistant work on for a good portion of the year on their own time. For Ron, it’s like flipping the calendar over to a new year with fresh new opportunities to explore and get excited about. He added, “It kind of kicks off the whole year for our community.” This is the event of the year for people who are looking to engage in the community either as a participant or volunteer. There will be food trucks available on site. Limited tables are still available for groups looking to register for this event. He continued, “When you think about it, with (up to) four events every year, we are always looking at what else we can do. We’ve got roughly 30 members in our club right now, so we have the power to do things.” The Kinsmen Club is open to accepting prize donations to go along with all the great items they’ve already collected. Scott added, “When we decided to do this, we decided to do it right and have a good time with this.” They hope to build on this year’s tournament for next year.

Kyra Thompson is well known in the Churchmice community as a wonderful singer, dancer, actor and director. Anyone that has seen any of her work, knows how talented she truly is. As the popular community theatre group gears up for its 47th season, she will be directing this year’s musical, The Wizard of Oz. Kyra said, “We felt it quite fitting with Wicked coming out the last couple of years, little kids are getting reintroduced to the story of The Wizard of Oz, we thought it would be a good show to do.” She continued, “Plus we haven’t had a show in awhile where kids can be in the production and we’re really excited to have them.” Auditions for this production are being held at Camrose United Church located at 4829-50 Street on September 12 and 13 between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. with call backs on September 14 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Please note that children 16 years and under are required to have a parent present. This is also a great opportunity for parents and children who all like to perform to come out and audition together. Kyra remarked, “You don’t need to have any experience, singing in the shower counts. As long as you’re willing to come out and sing in front of a couple of people, come to auditions.” Carolyn Olson is a Churchmice member and will be the musical director. Kyra added, “If anyone can teach someone to sing, it’s Carolyn. She seems to

know how people need to be taught.” As the director of this show, Kyra encourages people to come out and audition. They need actors interested in a variety of roles. This is a show that can accommodate every level of stage confidence with many opportunities for parts with both large and small speaking roles. Churchmice productions like to be an inclusive group and have options for anyone interested in theatre from playing the main character to non-speaking roles. If being on stage isn’t for someone, they still encourage people interested in local theatre to come assist in backstage roles. The Wizard of Oz is such a familiar story, it’s a great time to participate in a musical that is very beginner friendly. Kyra added, “For someone who’s thought ‘I would really like to get involved, but I’m not sure how it works’, this is your opportunity.” Kyra feels confident going into this production with a strong, experienced team around her, knowing they can support each other. With all the talent in Camrose, she will be relying on human creativity to bring the story to life from the actors on stage, to the artists creating the backdrops and sets. Hometown swimmer makes waves By Nadine Leming

The 2026 Alberta Summer Games took place July 16 to 19 in Strathcona County. The fourday event saw more than 2,500 athletes, managers, and staff participate and featured 13 different sports that included swimming from the eight various Alberta Zones. Brady McNabb is a 12-yearold swimmer who represented Zone 4 and competed against the province’s top 12- and 13-year-old swimmers at Millennium Place Aquatic Centre in Sherwood Park. At the summer games, Brady qualified for the A final in all four individual events and recorded personal bests in each event, with significant time drops. Two personal best highlights included a 5.49-second improvement in the 100-metre backstroke and a 4.83-second improvement in the 100-metre freestyle. When asked about his goals for the Summer Games, Brady responded, “To swim and meet all of my personal bests and try and

get a medal.” He also mentioned that he enjoyed meeting new people while at the games. Brady finished fifth or sixth place in every individual final that placed him amongst the top swimmers in Alberta in his age category. In addition to his personal achievements, he helped Zone 4 earn two bronze medals in the relay competition. Brady was proud to represent Camrose and Zone 4 at the Alberta Summer Games as he competed against some of the best athletes in the province. Jana Gau, swim coach, said, “What makes his accomplishments even more remarkable is that many of the athletes at the Alberta Summer Games train year-round with competitive swim clubs.” She continued, “Brady trains with the Camrose Sea Serpents for just four months each year, from May through August, so just making it to the games was a great accomplishment.” Brady left his mark on these games making all the finals and swimming each

race twice and to take four or five seconds off a 100-metre swim was amazing for someone his age. Jana commented on Brady’s strong work ethic in the pool adding, “He comes to practice every day ready to work, consistently pushes himself to improve, and embraces every challenge with determination. I knew he was going to do really well. He’s such a great competitor and always has the right mindset.” She continued, “His effort, positive attitude, and willingness to give his best set an outstanding example for everyone around him.” Jana talked about how Brady is a great teammate and role model for the Sea Serpents. He represents the leadership and sportsmanship that makes great athletes even greater people. Brady competed in the regional championship August 8 and 9 before moving on to the Alberta summer swimming provincials August 14 to 16, where he is ranked first or second in Alberta for both meets.

Fred Dibben’s 1978 Lincoln Continental By Adan Shaikh

Fred Dibben owns a 1978 Lincoln Continental. A vehicle hard to miss with its signature long hood and wide body. Dibben bought the car in 2022 and has since put some kilometres on it, with the odometer now showing 138,403 kilometres. With its long body, big V8 and unmistakable presence, it is the kind of car that does not simply get you from one place to another, it makes an entrance. He previously owned a 1979 Cadillac, another big American car from the era. Dibben had considered having it restored, but the Cadillac had developed a fair amount of rust and the cost of bringing it back to life was adding up. Then the Lincoln came along. “It was in good condition, almost no rust, and it was going to cost almost what it was going to cost to redo the Cadillac,” he shared. The choice became fairly simple. “I thought, well, this way I can just drive it.” That is exactly what Dibben does he takes the car out every chance he gets. He shared the most enjoyable part of owning the Continental is the enjoyable drive.

The Continental is a product of a time when bigger often meant better. Its long body and spacious design make today’s vehicles look compact by comparison, but Dibben said the car is surprisingly smooth to drive and you eventually become accustomed to the long hood. “It rides really nice, just floats along. You set the cruise to whatever speed you want,” added Dibben. He does not have any major changes planned for the Continental. Aside from general maintenance and keeping the car in good running order, he is happy to leave it much as he found it. He shared that the appeal of owning the Continental is not necessarily about having a pristine show car but it is about owning something with character and enjoying it while it is still on the road.

FUN FACTS According to collector websites, the 1978 Lincoln Continental was a massive, 233-inch-long “land yacht” and one of the last traditional heavy American luxury cars before 1980s downsizing. It weighed over 5,000 pounds, featured hidden headlights, and offered a choice of a standard 400 cu. in. (6.6L) or optional 460 cu. in. V8 engine. It popularized narrow, circular, or oval “opera windows” in the C-pillars, a major luxury styling trend of the late 1970s. It has been a decade since legendary band The Tragically Hip bid an emotional farewell to Canada. It was an extraordinary performance that bonded a nation together for one historic night. The band is paying tribute to their lasting impact with a momentous release of their concert recording on August 21 of their final concert in 2016. When the original concert was aired across the nation, the concert was experienced by an estimated one-third of Canadians. The Tragically Hip have a deep bond between their music and fans, a connection that remains unrivalled today. The performance became a defining cultural moment that honoured the band and was among the biggest events in Canadian broadcasting history. The show closed, after three encores, with an unforgettable performance of “Ahead by a Century.” With the song concluded, band members put down their instruments to stand arm in arm as they slipped into the wings as

the audience bid them a farewell. There will be an exclusive rebroadcast and global live stream on CBC of the band’s last show in Kingston, ON. What better way to enjoy the encore performance than to hear it through a concert quality sound system and watch it on the 40 foot-wide screen at the Lougheed Performing Arts Centre (LPAC). Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society (CWSS) announced the winner of the City Bird Poll. On August 13, the Stoney Creek Centre was filled with 41 residents as they gathered to learn which bird garnered the most votes to be considered Camrose’s official bird. The options to vote for included the Black-capped Chickadee, Purple Martin, Blue Jay, Red-breasted Nuthatch and Canada Goose, all nominated by nature groups in Camrose. The voting began on June 11 and as the deadline grew closer, so did the competition between the Purple Martin and Blackcapped Chickadee, however, the Purple Martin secured the top spot by receiving 65 votes, beating the Blackcapped Chickadee by only five votes. Camrose is an official Bird Friendly City, recognized by Nature Canada. At the announcement event, Glen Hvenegaard,

chair of CWSS, shared how Camrose became one of 41 certified bird-friendly municipalities around Canada and what it means for the community. The Purple Martin has been an important part of Camrose’s bird population, and each year conservation efforts are being made by local community members as well as organizations. “It was hard to narrow it down to just one because there’s so many great birds around. But I think the Purple Martin is really well-suited to be the City Bird because there is a lot of stewardship that’s been happening for the last few years, specifically for them,” said Kaitlin Christenson, wildlife and greenspace stewardship coordinator for CWSS. Conservation efforts over the years have included setting up Purple Martin houses around the area, having local volunteers monitor their conditions and ensure the bird houses are raised

and lowered each year in time for the arrival of the birds. The annual Purple Martin Festival by CWSS also brings the community together each year to raise awareness, knowledge and more Purple Martin homes in and around Camrose. “They have really come to grow near and dear to a lot of people’s hearts. They are very sociable and I feel once you know their species, they are very easy to spot,” shared Kaitlin. Purple Martins make their journey all the way from Brazil each year to spend the summer, arriving some time late April to mid-May and leaving by mid-August. Kaitlin’s favourite fact about the Purple Martin is that the baby birds often return to the house/nest where they were born to start their own families. The Sharkey family has been billeting Kodiak players for the last three seasons, each year with a different player. Cherilyn commented on how positive the experience has been for her and her family. Over the last few years of billeting, not only have they gotten to know their billet, but their families as well. Cherilyn spoke to how they have travelled to visit the families of their billets and she has formed deep connections with each of the mothers. For Cherilyn, making that connection with the players and their families has been amazing. She added, “From not knowing them at all to becoming part of your family is pretty special.” This past season, Cherilyn and her family had Evan Carver in their home. She commented that within a day, she knew that he was a good fit for their household. She added, “He was an addition to our family.” With the season over, Evan is still in communication with Cherilyn’s kids. The Sharkey’s aren’t a hockey family, but heard through a friend

that the Kodiaks were in need of a billet family. Cherilyn and her husband talked about it that evening and within a couple of weeks, they had their first billet from the team. She enjoys having these players in her house and has turned her into a hockey mom. She jokingly said, “Are we really these people?” Cherilyn talked about how each of the billet families are all quite different, but even with this group, they stay connected and always enjoy the annual Canmore trip to other activities throughout the season. These activities are always fun whether they’re curling or going on a scavenger hunt. When asked what stands out about being a billet family, Cherilyn commented on how Evan really made an effort to be a part of their family. Right away he went and played football with her son and his friends. One thing that surprised Cherilyn was getting to know their moms and creating bonds with them. She remarked, “I’m very, very thankful to get to know these people that I would have never known for coming into

my life for a reason or a season.” Until becoming a billet family, Cherilyn mentioned it wasn’t something really on her radar. Once they got into it, she commented, “Wow, I really care! It brought us closer together and gave us something to do as a family.” There are times when players need a place to stay short term, for example during training camp, where they may just need somewhere for a week. Cherilyn encourages anyone that has considered hosting a billet for the Kodiaks, to give it some thought. Hosting a player on a short-term basis just might give someone an idea if this works for them or not. She spoke to how the reward is better than any sacrifice that may have to be made. She added, “Some of these (players) have such a great bond with their billet brothers and the little ones who look up to them.” Long after the final buzzer, these players continue to be a part of the family, proving that a house becomes a home when it’s filled with support and care.

July 6, 1936 ~ August 7, 2026 Marilylle was born on July 6, 1936, at her family’s farmhouse in Withrow, Alberta, the eldest of Stan and Ruth Pattison’s five children. In early adulthood she served as a teacher and principal in northern Alberta Metis and First Nations communities, later working as an educator and linguist at the University of Saskatchewan. In July 1963, she married the love of her life, Pastor Larry Soveran. In 1968, they adopted their daughter Marjorie, and their son Kalman the following year. The family faced profound loss when Kalman passed away suddenly on August 8, 1980, at the age of fourteen. Marilylle treasured her relationship with God, His church, and His world. Together, Larry and Marilylle ministered to Lutheran congregations across Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Alberta. Marilylle contributed her gifts as musician, writer, community builder, and friend. She was an intellectual, naturalist, author, and artist, with an immense passion for literature and Alberta’s wildlife and landscapes. Marilylle passed away August 7, 2026, at the age of 90. She was predeceased by her husband Larry; son Kalman; parents Stan and Ruth; parents-in-law John and Mary; siblings Fred, Ken (Shirley) Pattison, Doreen (Dave) Lord, Jim (Violet), Ernie (Elaine) and Robert (Joanne) Soveran, Larry Wilde. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Marjorie; siblings Will (Marion) Pattison, Anne (Ernie) Gray, Donna Pattison, Doug (Kristin) Soveran, Silvia Wilde; and many nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at Bethel Lutheran Church, 4102-73 Street, Camrose, officiated by Rev. Deborah Ann Taylor. April 21, 1933 ~ August 4, 2026 It is with sadness that the family of Stanley McHarg announce his passing in Drayton Valley, Alberta, on August 4, 2026. While mourning his passing, they also celebrate his life so well lived and so well loved. Stanley was known by many as “Stan the man” and he truly was an awesome man who lived his life with passion and a deep sense of appreciation for his family and friends. Stan always enjoyed his work, starting with his job as a Truck Driver picking up milk at Dairy Farms, on to being a car salesman and then his work with John Deere, selling farm and yard implements. His role as a salesman was such a great fit for Stan. He loved to socialize with people and had a way of putting others at ease. One of his favourite pastimes was visiting with friends over a coffee at any Tim’s. More than anything, “Stan the man” was a man who was so devoted to his family. He shared 69 years of marriage with his wife and companion, Marlene. They loved their motorhome adventures of touring and just being together. He loved time with family, especially camping trips and sitting around a campfire with his grandkids. He was a master-chef on the barbecue grill and many fond memories centre around such family events. And as they fondly celebrate Stan, the family will do so with the image of a toothpick in his mouth… he always seemed to have a toothpick! Remembering forever the toothpicks and the tales of Stan’s life are his wife, Marlene; his daughters, Lori Jane Ross and Holly Smith (Tim); his grandchildren, Carl (Liz) Ross, Amberlene (Ivor) Rindero, Allan (Kassandra) Ross, Layne (Kate) Ross, Winston Ross, Jessica (Mike) Blair, Sarah (Danny) Wallace, Amanda (Dalton) Doepping and Alexander Smith. Stan also lives on through his legacy of 17 great-grandchildren. Stan will be celebrated every day in the hearts and homes of his family and all who knew him. Stan was predeceased by his parents, James and Lellah McHarg, and his brother Roger McHarg. A private celebration of Stanley’s life will take place as the family gathers together in Camrose at a later date. The family simply invite you to continue to live out of his inspiration and tell the stories. And be Kind. On that note of being kind, Stan’s family would like to express their deep appreciation to all of their family and friends, with a special thank you to all the staff and friends made at Seasons Retirement Living in Drayton Valley. Increased funding for support programs By Jackie Lovely, MLA Camrose Constituency

United Conservatives are strengthening the supports Albertans need during some of the most important moments in their lives. Our government has increased funding for survivors of sexual violence, worked to improve the response when vulnerable Albertans go missing, expanded opportunities for midwifery care, and invested more than $38 million in community support groups across Alberta. Survivors of sexual violence and abuse need to be able to access the support they need, no matter where they live in the province. That’s why United Conservatives are investing nearly $21 million to strengthen specialized care services across Alberta. This includes $17 million for 15 sexual assault centres and funding for the Association of Alberta Sexual Assault Services, as well as $3.7 million for eight child advocacy centres. Child advocacy centres bring medical and mental health professionals together in one place to support children and youth who’ve experienced abuse, reducing the need for them to relive their trauma as they move through the justice system. These investments will help survivors and families get specialized care when they need it most. When vulnerable Albertans go missing, every minute matters, and it becomes critical to respond quickly to help protect their safety. This is why our government is reviewing how Alberta’s emergency alert system responds in these situations. Public Safety and Emergency Services will work with police, disability advocates, and community partners to examine current emergency alert processes, including the criteria for issuing an Amber Alert. This work will help ensure Alberta’s alert system responds effectively when vulnerable Albertans go missing and that law enforcement has the right tools to deal with these urgent situations. Families across the province will have more choices for pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care. Applications are now open for the Alberta Midwifery Strategy Grant, backed by a $5-million investment from our government. Individual projects can receive up to $750,000 to recruit and support midwives, and bring services to more rural, remote, and Indigenous communities. Midwifery is a publicly funded health service for low-risk pregnancies, providing care throughout pregnancy, labour, birth, and the first six weeks after delivery. By helping more communities access these services, United Conservatives are giving families more options and helping bring maternal care closer to home. Strong communities often depend on the local organizations that know their neighbours best. Through Budget 2026, our government is investing more than $38 million through the Community Facility Enhancement Program and Community Initiatives Program. These grants help non-profits improve community facilities, run local programs, support families, and strengthen community services. Through the Community Facility Enhancement Program, every $1 invested by our government attracts an average of $3 from other partners. That means local organizations can turn provincial support into bigger projects and lasting benefits for their communities. Our government is making sure that Albertans aren’t left to face their challenges alone. Whether it’s helping survivors of sexual violence find care, protecting vulnerable Albertans, giving families more health-care choices, or backing the organizations that hold communities together. Goals, guts and glory – wrapping up the Vikings U13 summer season

Submitted The U13 Vikings team are coming off a successful season that saw them bring home a lot of hardware over the summer. This is the kind of season these young athletes will remember for a lifetime. Submitted

The Camrose U13 Boys Tier 3 Vikings had an incredibly successful season! The boys battled through challenging league games, tournaments, and ultimately the Provincial Championships, consistently showing determination, heart, and teamwork. Throughout the season, the team medalled in every tournament they participated in, earning either gold or silver each time. They also finished first in league play, and earned a well-deserved spot at Provincials. At the provincial championships, the Vikings faced some of the top teams in their age division and tier from across Alberta. They

came out strong, winning their first three games and advancing to the semi-finals. To open the semifinal, Camrose’s keeper, Silas Schmidt scored an incredible goalie goal! The game ultimately went to a shootout, where the Vikings came out on top and punched their ticket to the gold medal match. The final match was an absolute battle. The boys fought through double overtime before the game once again went to a shootout. While the Vikings ultimately lost in the shootout, there is so much to be proud of, finishing with a second place silver medal in the province!

NIGHT CLASSIC

Even the best players in the world miss in a shootout. A shootout loss does not define this team. Their dedication, hard work, sportsmanship, integrity, growth, and determination throughout the entire season does. These boys grew not only as soccer players, but as teammates and individuals. They showed up for one another, battled through every challenge, and represented Camrose with pride. Their parents could not be more proud of these boys and their coaches and everything they accomplished this season. It was an incredible year for the Vikings!

Submitted Camrose Minor Soccer held its annual night soccer tournament in June. It was a success with 344 team staff and 300-plus volunteers. There were 129 teams that participated with 1,927 players, and games held across 14 fields. The team in the photo is the U17 Boys’ team.

Did you ever think that maybe dogs tilt their heads at us because they can't roll their eyes? The amount of time it takes for a dog to find a place to do their business is directly proportional to how hard it is raining. They should make an alarm clock that sounds like a dog about to vomit. Nothing will get you out of bed faster. When I yell at my dog to stop barking, I wonder if he thinks, "This is awesome – we're barking together!" Me: "Why do you bark at nothing?" Dog: "Do I bark at nothing or is there nothing because I bark?" The Vet to my dog: "Who's a good girl? Who's so pretty? Do you want a cookie? Do you want a belly rub?" My Doctor to me: "You're looking rather tired and puff y." I know that my dog loves me, however, if I had a squeaker inside me, he'd gut me like a fish. Why is it that when I sleep and make tiny little whistling sounds with my nose, my wife makes me go to the guest room, but when the dog snores, drools and passes gas, she will still spoon with him? I love it when my dog sighs – like what is bothering you today, you little unemployed debt-free freeloader?
