Welcome

The Camrose region, consisting of 18 charming communities, is the ideal weekend destination with things for the whole family to do . Located an hour southeast of Edmonton in Central Alberta, Camrose encompasses a rich history and modern vibrancy Built upon Indigenous traditional hunting grounds, it was developed by railway networks offering passenger service, mining exports, and a bountiful agriculture industry.

Stay at one of the 20 cozy campgrounds surrounded by nature, at a bed and breakfast with picturesque prairie views, or enjoy a luxurious stay at one of the hotels in Camrose .

Spend the morning exploring extensive trail networks, historic sites, and points of interest Preferred destinations include the Stoney Creek Valley in Camrose, Miquelon Lake Provincial Park and the historic Meeting Creek Railway Station and Park . Ever picnicked at a former gravel pit? The Nature Conservation Centre is a beautiful and unique day-use area reclaimed in 2010, and is popular for scuba diving as the pond is deep and clean . Hike, bike, run, paddle, fish, golf and bird watch as you experience the distinctive flora and fauna of the aspen parkland. The Camrose region has gained recognition as a central hub for golf enthusiasts with seven contemporary golf courses catering to players of all skill levels .

Feast at restaurants, cafés and bistros in the region and satisfy cravings for hearty, locally produced meals . Spend the afternoon discovering everything downtown Camrose has to offer, from specialty boutiques to mini parks and murals, from game cafés to historic sites For the adventure seeker, consider a tour of the local breweries and distilleries to sample some local tastes . Catch a special sunset with an ice cream and a view of glassy Mirror Lake .

Evenings are best spent relaxing with friends and family around a campfire, stargazing in the dark sky preserve, unwinding at the indoor pool in Camrose, or taking in a live show hosting unique performances by local artisans and professional touring companies . North America’s longest running country music festival, Big Valley Jamboree, is hosted each August long weekend in Camrose, welcoming around 20,000 extra guests to the City, not to mention some of the biggest names in country music

and

I wouldn't dream of living

anywhere else!

My name is Marilou Yampolsky and I’m a very proud Camrosian. In my youth, my family moved across Alberta a few times. I moved to Camrose in 1996 to attend University. Almost instantly, I fell in love with this city Perhaps even greater, Cupid struck and I met my husband (whose family had moved even more then mine did).. We chose Camrose for our home, raise our three boys here and have literally loved every single minute of it!

Why we love Camrose:

• You know your neighbours.

• You say "Hi" when you pass someone on the trails.

• You feel safe and connected.

• It's a great place to raise kids.

How about you? If you like what you see on your visit, I can help you make the best move of your life.

I'd love to be your tour guide and show you all the great things!

MUSEUMS AND HISTORIC SITES

Camrose is located on a travelling route and is home to the Maskwacis, Nêhiyawak, Niitsitapi, Nakoda and Tsuut’ina Nations, the Métis, and other Indigenous peoples Their spiritual and practical relationships to the land create a rich heritage for our learning and our life as a community.

Dried Meat Lake, which is the water source for the City of Camrose, holds historical significance to the First Nations and Métis in this area People would combine bison meat with berries to make pemmican as the Saskatoon bushes grow abundantly in this region .

Settlers began arriving in Camrose in the early 1900s The Camrose railway depot was constructed in 1911 following the completion of the railway connecting Camrose to Vegreville in April of 1910

Freight service began in November of 1910 through Camrose and was followed by passenger services beginning in 1912 The freight line primarily transported agricultural products like grain and cattle as well as coal .

Many early homesteaders were from Sweden and Norway and skiing became a popular pastime that continues today. Camrose was first known as Stoney Creek (named after the creek flowing through the city) and was incorporated as Sparling in 1905 . Due to similar town names elsewhere in Manitoba and confusion with mail deliveries, the town was incorporated as Camrose in 1906 The Camrose community formed around the bustling railway hub, and the agriculture industry thrived due to the fertile soil and plentiful precipitation
