BRCF assists Kandu Camp program Submitted

The Battle River Community Foundation recently awarded grants of $7,400 to the Camrose Association For Community Living to support the Kandu Camp summer program.

The grants are from income from the Ricky James Hillaby Fund and the Citizen Advocacy Legacy Fund. The Ricky James Hillaby Fund is a donor advised fund that allows the donors to recommend projects or programs for support by the Foundation.

The Citizen Advocacy Legacy Fund was established to provide assistance to programs supporting residents with disabilities.

The Kandu Summer Day Camp is a program for all children, including those with special health and developmental concerns.

The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects, programs and facilities, such as those offered by the Camrose Association for Community Living, in East Central Alberta which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future.

Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the gen-

erosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations.

Since it was founded in 1995, the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $6,350,000 to support community facilities and programs operated

by organizations like the Camrose Association for Community Living.

Un-Canadian or true Canadian?

Shortly after I sent last week’s Reflections column to The Booster, I received two responses from Booster staff members. In that column, “An un-Canadian confession,” I confessed that I’m not interested in hockey, football, basketball–or any professional sport. I couldn’t understand why our culture thinks professional sports figures are worth millions of dollars per month when people who care for others are not. Within an hour, I received two messages from Booster staff. The first said, “I thoroughly enjoyed [your column] and couldn’t agree more! Looking forward to seeing any feedback you may receive on this topic.”

The second message said, “I received your column.

However, I can’t agree with you on this one!”

I suspected the second comment would be a majority opinion. However…

What others said With permission from people who commented, here’s a sample of other reader responses: “Loved your most recent column in The Camrose Booster! My thoughts and feelings exactly, which you have expressed so eloquently. Thank you!”

“I totally agree with your comments in the June 11 Booster. It is not only hockey, but other sports that pay outrageous salaries and then expect subsidized facilities.

“There is a place for ‘good’ pay, but it should go towards folks who produce something of substance. In the last New Trails, a publication of the U of A, there was a list of research being done at that institution that is second to none. I would appreciate people who contribute in this way to get more recognition and pay. Their efforts make life better for all of us and they deserve to get credit and accolades. I have no problem with hockey players, or other athletes, getting recognition, but let’s keep it in perspective.

“Thanks for stimulating our thought nerves.” *** “Way to go. We are with you all the way.”

In reply to my email asking permission to quote this person, the reply was, “By all means. Thank you. Besides it should be ‘True Canadian’ instead of ‘un-Canadian.’”

True Canadian? I like that better! I’m reflecting.

Maybe “the majority” isn’t!

Of readers who sent comments, all agreed with me!

Except for the one Booster staff member, nobody who disagreed sent me a comment. That surprised me. This made me think about times in my life when I did not express my true thoughts, for fear I was the only one who thought like that and would be rejected by “the majority.” Instead, I chose to be silent.

These days, with such negativity and nastiness in mass media and social media, the noise gives us a perception of “reality” that may not be accurate. Maybe there’s a silent majority of people who are not angry and belligerent, but afraid to say so. The more the silent people are silent, the more all of us could have a false perception of how things are.

Also, of course, the loudest or most powerful are not always right. Powerful people once taught that the earth was the centre of the universe. People who dared to say that was not true were jailed or tortured. That did not mean the earth was the centre of the universe.

The majority of people once believed the earth was flat. That did not mean the earth was flat.

Is “Raptor-ous-ness” a good enough reason?

I’m writing this on the morning after Toronto Raptors won their first ever basketball championship. I’ve watched how people across Canada rose above east/west left/right or other differences to post “We the North” signs and cheer on the Raptors. Might there be some non-monetary societal value in professional sports?

I wish we didn’t place our sense of identity in the hands of professional athletes who are simply hired employees of multi-billion entertainment businesses. It’s making me remember “bread and circuses” and the fall of the Roman Empire…

Next election

About six months before the recent Alberta elections I had a conversation with some friends. The gist of this discourse was basically how much and in what ways the Notley government would try and “suck up” to the Alberta voters. Having noted a definite “shift in position,” even as far back as the beginning of her third year at the helm, it was safe to assume she’d be “apple polishing” as hard as she possibly could the closer it got to election day.

My fellow Canadians… it’s about to happen again.

This time it’s drama teacher boys’ turn (yes, our socalled Prime Minister). And judging from his past performances (both here and abroad…India in particular), his apple polishing performance is going to be epic.

You know why? Because it’s going to have to be epic in order to get anyone to seriously consider voting for this clown. I urge all Canadian voters to keep an eye on this character to see exactly what he’ll try to pull off in order to keep his “seat of power” in place. I can’t wait to watch the debates and see the similarities

between Notleys’ aggressive campaign (she couldn’t possibly stand on the merits of her past performance) and what Trudeau will attempt to launch against the UCP and others. I’m not a betting person, but I’ll wager the farm he’ll take the low road, rather than the high road (most likely because his past performance was tantamount to an ugly storm that wiped out the high road). It ain’t there anymore people.

Let’s all stay vigilant and keep his antics in our memories. Look at his past record, not at his hairdo.

Should you read this letter, I encourage you to cut it out, paste in your fridge and read it out loud every day until it’s time to cast your vote.

Now, I am not an expert on this sort of bill and I am not a member of any council of any city. Yet, I am a human who has the right to air my opinion of what I see here. I am a writer who has four books published with many letters published in around nine newspapers across Canada.

Now, Bill 7 has not been passed yet. If it is passed, and I am sure it will be, this will be a good tool for councils of any town or city to have the power to pass a local bylaw in order to set out their programs to attract new business to their town or city.

This will allow councils to defer or cancel taxes to attract whatever industry which they want to attract to their area or place. This bill will give the power over to those who are in charge of each community. In my view, this bill could help create millions of jobs which would never be created without this bill.

In my view if passed, the City of Camrose should attract businesses who produce things like beer, cereals and other items. What this community does not need is another restaurant, liquor store, hairstyle place or church. This is only my opinion. This bill could be very good for Camrose if used in the right way and after businesses which this city really needs. This is just something for all of you to think about.

The 30th annual Alberta MS Bike Tour from Leduc to Camrose, set for June 22 and 23, is not just cyclists.

Volunteers and riders will be raising funds for MS. It is the largest bike event across Canada with a goal of reaching 1,700 participants.

“I wanted to help my daughter-in-law Julie and my son Dallas by volunteering. Julie has MS, so it was an easy decision to make. I wanted to make a difference,” said Sharon Kelndorfer, who has volunteered in Camrose for the past 12 years.

“I help with information. I greet people when they come to the Camrose Regional Exhibition (CRE), which is the home base for the tour.

I give directions, help answer questions, sell tickets for dinner, hand out participant packages and explain what events are going to take place,” said Sharon, who formerly lived in Killam and worked in Camrose.

“Some people bring tents, others stay at Augustana and I help them go in the right direction, see if they need first aid and where they should store bicycles and things like that. Camrose is an amazing place when it comes to helping out MS,” pointed out Sharon.

“I wanted to volunteer because of family members and I had a childhood friend that had MS. My daughter-in-law was diagnosed 15 years ago after our grandson was

born. I have a couple more friends that have MS, so I wanted to help out. I visit people at the hospital, so I get involved in that too. It is a program that the MS Society have set up to visit people with a disability and take them for walks and talks,” explained Sharon.

It is an all ages fun event on the weekend for participants. “My grandson Joshua has been volunteering for a number of years. Julie and Dallas help organize the set up for the bike tour. She works out of the MS office in Edmonton,” shared Sharon.

“The funds raised are used for research and help people live a better life. It also helps caregivers with programs. Sometimes family members need help with programs and equipment.”

The tour is fully equipped with transportation, mechanical and first aid support, so anyone age 10 and up of all abilities can challenge themselves on this ride.

Join the fight to end MS. Sharon also volunteers in the walk, golf tournament and at the fundraising casino.

Every day, three more Canadians are diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable illness that affects vision, balance, memory and mobility.

Scholarship for Medical School Students in an accredited Canadian medical school taking a program leading to an MD degree, who have graduated from a high school in the Battle River Regional Division, are invited to apply for a scholarship from the Rudy and Flora Baker Scholarship Fund.

Call for Grant Applications The Battle River Community Foundation is now receiving applications for grants from the Community Fund and Field of Interest Funds.

Grants are made to organizations operating in east-central Alberta that are recognized as qualified donees by the Canada Revenue Agency. This includes registered charitable organizations and municipalities.

Organizations seeking funds must demonstrate a strong and committed volunteer board of directors, fiscal responsibility, and effective management of resources. Projects that impact the greatest number of individuals possible with a modest investment of funds, are preferred. Grants are made for definite purposes and for projects covering a specific time period.

In general, grants are approved for projects not met by other funding sources.

In addition to unrestricted grants available from the Community Fund, some Funds provide grants targeted to projects reflecting donors’ interests. They include Animal Welfare, Arts, Brain Injury Prevention, Education, the Humanities, Health and Wellness (including Mental and Emotional Health and Wellness), Literacy, Music, Nutrition and Food Security, Outdoor Education, Palliative Care, Preservation and Protection of the Environment, Preservation of History, Prevention of Family Violence, Services for Individuals with Special Needs, Sustainable Agriculture, Youth Athletics and Youth Projects and Programs.

There are also Funds targeted to support projects serving residents of Alliance, Camrose, Flagstaff County, Forestburg, Galahad, Hardisty, Hay Lakes, Hughenden, Irma, Killam, Lougheed, Merna, Rosalind, Sedgewick, Strome, Viking and Wetaskiwin.

The deadline for receipt of 2019 applications is Thursday, August 15, 2019. Grants will be announced in December.

Former Harper Conservative MP Jeff Watson enters race to become Conservative candidate in Battle River-Crowfoot.

With rural crime reaching a crisis in Alberta, and oil and gas sector facing threats to its future, Watson is stepping forward to run.

“Rural communities face real, immediate challenges,” said Watson, who has made Alberta his home after serving as MP for the rural, farming district of Essex in southwestern Ontario for over a decade.

“These challenges require practical solutions and both leadership and experience getting results in the one place where the nominated Conservative candidate may be sent by voters–the House of Commons in Ottawa.

“While others may have to take years to learn the ropes and build relationships in caucus and cabinet to move ideas forward,” added Watson, who also served as parliamentary secretary to the minister of transportation in the Harper government. “I’m ready on day one to work on solutions to rural crime, for a future for oil and gas that keeps our young people living in rural communities, for a strong farm gate and processing sector, to lower taxes and axe

Trudeau’s carbon tax, and for a fairer deal for Alberta on equalization,” he said.

Watson, his wife of 22 years, Sarah, and their six children currently reside in Calgary, where Jeff works with UCP transportation minister Ric McIver and Sarah works for Calgary Conservative MP Stephanie Kusie. “I am a country boy at heart. I grew up helping my Baba farm, learning from her the value of family and country life, hard work, and pride in a job well done,” noted Watson. “I had the privilege of living in and representing a rural district. Our values and experience are rural. Battle River Crowfoot is where we want to set down our roots.”

Watson has already been knocking on doors in communities across Battle River-Crowfoot, listening to residents’ concerns, proposing concrete solutions to pressing problems identified, and recruiting new members to the Conservative Party to support its nomination process. “It’s important that people buy a Conservative Party membership now to choose who will be on the fall election ballot and possibly the next MP for Battle River Crowfoot.”

He will be holding a series of open to the public

meetings in June, so those who may not have been home when he knocked on their door will have a chance to provide advice, offer ideas and ask questions of Watson. “I invite everyone to take the full measure of me, my values, my record and experience,” he said. Jeff served in caucus with Kevin Sorenson as Conservative MP (Essex) from 2004 to 2015; and as parliamentary secretary from 2013 to 2015, where he helped ensure rail companies moved western grain.

Jeff also fought for the oil and gas sector and against foreign funded groups, seeking to shut them down at the Standing Committee on the Environment and Sustainable Development for more than six years.

The New Norway and District Recreation Association is hosting the New Norway Sports Weekend on June 22 and 23 and invites everyone to come out and enjoy a weekend of fun activities and baseball.

From June 20 to July 3, Sobeys stores will come together from coast to coast to support Special Olympics Canada through its second national in-store checkstand campaign.

Over the campaign, customers are encouraged to make a donation at their local Sobeys, Urban Fresh, Safeway, Thrifty Foods,

On June 22 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., Safeway Camrose will be hosting the Summer Food Fair and Camrose Special Olympics athletes, coaches and representatives will be in the store to help bring about awareness and educate customers on the Special Olympics and Sobeys partnership. On that day, Sobeys will match customer donations across the country to a maximum of $150,000.

“Safeway (Sobeys) have been proud partners with Special Olympics since 2016,” said Camrose Safeway store manager John Larsen. “It’s been our mission to help educate athletes on how to live healthier lives with a balanced eating program.

“We want to thank all of our customers for donating to such a wonderful cause. Their donations assist in maintaining athletic programs for Special Olympics athletes right here in Camrose.”

Last year, Sobeys, Urban Fresh, Safeway, Thrifty Foods, IGA and Foodland customers raised more than $700,000 for Special Olympics programming across Canada.

Although the Armena Royals and Holden Blue Jays are both tied for the top spot in the Powerline Baseball League, they are two very different teams.

Armena supports the top offensive club in the league, while Holden has the best pitching and defence. The teams have a 8-1-1 record after 10 games.

Holden beat Sherwood Park 7-0 and Armena blanked the Camrose Roadrunners 16-0 to both win on June 13. Rosalind also beat Tofield 10-3 on that date.

The regular season finishes on July 12 and then the playoffs begin shortly after. The top three teams in the league will advance to the playoffs. The fourth and fifth place teams will play a one-game wild card contest to qualify for the final playoff spot.

On June 18, Camrose Axemen visit Leduc, Rosalind is in Tofield and the Roadrunners visit Armena.

On June 19, the Axemen host Holden on Harry Andreassen Field in Kin Park.

On June 20, the Roadrunners host Millet, Rosalind is in Holden and Tofield is in Armena.

On June 24, Tofield visits the Edmonton Expos.

On June 25, Armena is in Leduc and Tofield travels to Holden.

On June 26, Rosalind travels to Camrose to play the Axemen at 7 p.m. on Harry Andreassen Field in Kin Park.

The June schedule closes on June 27 with Rosalind at the Roadrunners and Leduc takes on Holden.

Lougheed Centre set to launch new season

Get ready to take a sneak peak into the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre 2019-20 season of entertainment on June 20 at 7 p.m.

You can also take a tour of the facility (6 p.m.) and enjoy coffee and cake, while you think about your first opportunity to view all of the upcoming shows.

Besides catching videos of the performers, two of the acts will be on stage for live performances on launch night.

Strictly Business will give a preview of their Christmas cabaret featuring musical theatre, Christmas tunes and story telling in a relaxed and entertaining atmosphere. For audiences who may not usually enjoy theatre, Kayla and Kelsey charm with their wit, musicality and a whole lot of humour. Get into the Christmas spirit, while getting to know a couple of kooky singers. With the Strictly Business catchphrase, “come laugh with us or at us,” the ladies promise that no matter what, you’ll have a good time. They will be giving a full concert on Friday, Dec. 13.

Little Miss Higgins struts and serenades her way onto any stage playing early country blues, jazz and folk music. For more than 15 years, she has performed, toured, collaborated, recorded and released five independent albums. Her music has won three Western Canadian Music Awards and received JUNO and Maple Blues awards nominations.

Her full show in Camrose will be on Saturday, Feb. 1.

Presentation Series

The Shuman Insurance Presentation Series will have 13 shows this season, one more than last year. “We ended up with an extra show, which is a good problem to have,” said Nick Beach, manager of the Lougheed Centre.

The first show is Juliet and Romeo put on by Decidedly Jazz Danceworks on Friday, Oct. 11. “They do everything, dance to a live jazz band on stage. They are my favourite contemporary dance company in Canada. It offers the story from Juliet’s point of view,” shared Nick.

“They are very hip and urban. They are edgy and have different ideas about the old story,” added Tanya Pattullo, patron services manager.

Jimmy Rankin of the famous Rankin Family band is next up on Sunday, Oct. 20. “Jimmy wrote most of the music for the family band and provided the vocals as well. He has had a lot of success on his own,” said Nick.

urday, Oct. 26 to offer a story of a Second World War veteran. “Almost all of the theatres in our group in Alberta are bringing the show back.

“The response from the first show was overwhelming and it felt right to bring it back again,” said Nick.

Backbone Gravity and Other Myths from Australia will hit the stage on Saturday, Nov. 16.

“I went on a trade mission to Australia and this was one of the pieces that I saw. This was my dream. I was sitting there watching this with my three other colleagues and we are all thinking how do we get this show to Canada. I made it my mission to get this show to Canada. They are doing 11 shows in seven cities in BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan.

They need 25 feet in height and don’t use ropes from the tower. The show has a live band that plays with them as they perform,” explained Nick.

John McDermott is returning with his Christmas show on Sunday, Dec. 1.

“This is one of those shows that I had to book because I had repeated requests for it,” Nick said.

He also attended Michelle Wright’s Christmas show twice and wanted to share A Wright Christmas with Camrose on Saturday, Dec. 14. “She released her first album in five years, so she has new material. She will blend her own music with some classic to give us a country Christmas,” Nick said.

A new approach this year will be a Sing-A-Long Grease on Friday, Jan. 17.

This is your chance to singalong with the words and share in the story about Sandy and Danny. Fancy dress is strongly encouraged and full audience participation essential. A narrator guides you through the songs and you get a bag of things you need for the show. Be prepared to have fun.

“We are adding another cirque type show in Unikkaaqtuat. The 7 Fingers group highlights Inuit people, traditions and vision for the future. They have partnered with Artcirq from Nunavet to create the high energy cirque piece with traditional stories. It will be shown in Montreal, Ottawa and Camrose. We will add some workshops around it,” said Nick.

They have performed in opening and closing ceremonies at big events around the world. The Camrose show will be on Wednesday, Jan. 29.

Canada’s Ballet Jorgen returns with their world premiere tour of Anne of Green Gables. The story is based on the Canadian classic by Lucy

Maud Montgomery and uses music from the musical on Wednesday, March 11.

“This organization is great for our outreach programs and we expect they will involve the community again,” said Tanya.

Tim Tamashiro, who hosted the CBC show Tonic on the radio for 10 years, will be performing jazz numbers featuring the music of the Rat Pack, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. that led the Las Vegas casino shows in the 1960s. He makes the music more compelling with his stories of the time period. He will perform on Thursday, April 9.

Boom is about the baby boomer area and the performer is a man of 100 voices spanning 25 years of music.

“It is a musical theatre piece that celebrates baby boomers. It has played in every major centre in Canada.”

The show is on Wednesday, April 15 in Camrose.

If you like National Geographic type-shows, then Brian Keating’s Going Wild is a show you don’t want to miss. He takes you on an adventure around the world showing unbelievable creatures from the tops of mountains to the depths of the oceans. Enjoy his wild spaces on Wednesday, May 20.

Most of Canada’s top comedians have been on The Second City at some point in their career. The comedy factory will be bringing its road show Cure For The Common Comedy to the Lougheed Centre on Saturday, May 30.

Family Series

The Fountain Tire Family Series will again provide free shows for all ages. It starts with TerZettto that features three clowns that provide a high energy theatrical experience with humour and crazy antics. They will make you laugh on Sunday, Sept. 29.

The school show Axe Capoeira from Brazil will share culture, music and dance to the stage in a show on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

A children’s version of Sleeping Beauty by the Alberta Musical Theatre Company will offer the classic with a little magic on Sunday. Nov. 10. “It plays well to a young audience, but it doesn’t play down. Even the adults will enjoy this classic.”

With Samajam, you are the show. All participants will receive several instruments during the performance to join the musical fun. The Rythmo2 on Sunday, Jan. 12 is all about learning to make music.

The Tracy Brandingen Re/Max Acclaim Series has a new name, but will still have classical elements within the five show series.

“Our objective was to have classically trained artists, composed music, traditional folk music, instrumental music and some kings of world music. By saying classical, we felt we were not defining the music we were putting together. The name might not be attracting all of the people we want to come to the series,” explained Nick.

It kicks off with the MG3-Montreal Guitar Trio on Monday, Oct. 21. This Canadian group is the hottest guitar ensemble in the world. As a special treat, a California trio will be joining them on stage.

Music From The Prairies is a show with Dean McNeill on trumpet and Sylvia Shadick-Taylor on piano as they combine talent from Saskatchewan

and Alberta on Sunday, Nov. 17.

Nick scored another hot Christmas concert in Buzz Brass Christmas on Thursday, Dec. 19. Former Concert of the Year winners, this brass band will get you in the mood for the holiday season.

Rebecca Perry brings her routine of Confessions of a Redheaded Coffeeshop Girl and discusses jobs that people have had, but didn’t necessarily like. Join her on Saturday, Nov. 9. “This is a very funny play to which everyone can relate,” said Nick.

Special presentations

Burton Cummings loved the idea of getting up close with Camrose music fans and decided to come back and give a performance for those who may have missed him last time.

The Mission Songs Project is a quartet of Indigenous singers from across Australia. This free admission show on Wednesday, March 25 is a collection of songs that were sung after church and joins almost forgotten songs and stories together to be shared around the world. It will be a partnership with the Chester Ronning Centre.

Gust still treasures his first Thunderbird

Bryan Gust of Bashaw didn’t have to go too far to find his classic 1960 Ford Thunderbird. He inherited it from his father John, a former mayor of Bashaw, and he picked up caring for the car where his dad left off.

“I was 15 years old when my dad bought this car and later it was my first car. Now my daughter Lauren drives it. She now lives in California, so it is stored at my place and I get to drive it too sometimes. It is good to get it running more because if you don’t that can cause problems. It was my first car, so I have a soft spot for it,” said Bryan.

“It has a gangster look to it and it really hums down the road. When you drive it, it feels like you are really driving in style. It doesn’t drive—it floats,” said his wife Teresa (Terry) Brown Gust.

For the model year 1960, Ford had proposed a number of revisions to the now-twoyear-old what some called the square bird design. The Thunderbird roof line had been applied to large Fords in 1959 and designers were worried it wasn’t original any more.

“This car has pretty much been left stock. It has a 352 V8 motor and can go pretty good. The black colour really sets it a part from other vehicles,” said Bryan.

on a hot day (black car) because it doesn’t have air conditioning, but it has a lot of panache. People notice it when you drive by,” shared Terry.

“This model went from a two-seater to a four-seater and went from a small wheel base to a huge wheel base.

FUN FACTS

With more trim changes, most notably the addition of a third tail light in the rear clusters, 1960s sales figures hit another record: 92,843 units sold, including 11,860 convertibles. A rare option in this year was a sunroof; this “Golde Edition” (Golde was a German company whose sunroof patent Ford licensed) sold 2,530 examples.

At the end of 1960 production two Thunderbirds were constructed of stainless steel for the Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation, at a price of $35,000 each. Because of the properties of stainless steel, the production dies would be destroyed as a result of the stamping of the parts. This was not a problem for Ford, as the next generation of T-Bird used a new body style. To duplicate the T-Birds 3,957 lb (1,795 kg) normal production weight, body panels were made of Type 302 stainless steel, and trim pieces out of Type 430 stainless steel.

At the time of their production, because of the maximum rolling mill for stainless steel only produced stock that was 72 inches (1,800 mm) in width, both cars’ roofs were constructed from two 42-inchwide sections welded together in the middle. Both T-Birds received mechanical and interior restorations in the 1980s and survive to this day.

Back then they changed the entire car, which was really cool. Now they change the lights or a few things each year and it is almost the same car. But, this was a complete change from the 1955-57 small sports car.

The trouble with this old car is that you drive them for an hour and then fix them for a day,” revealed Bryan.

The Thunderbird was in its last year of a three year styling cycle, so Ford held off on serious changes until 1961.

The second generation Ford Thunderbird was produced for the 1958-60 model years as a successor to the popular 1955-57 two-seater. In response to Ford-conducted surveys, two major changes were made to attract potential buyers.

Two rear seats were added and the level of luxury features of a full-sized car were incorporated into a mid-size platform.

The 1960 Thunderbirds dropped a little weight, but went up in price. The base figures were $3,755 for the hardtop and $4,222 for the convertible.

As a result, sales soared and the new model dramatically expanded the personal luxury car market, winning the Motor Trend Car of the Year in 1958. Over 200,000 units were produced in its three-year model run, quadruple that of the two-seater in its three-year span.

Styling differences included vertical hashmarks added to rear fenders, Thunderbird script on the door projectile, a squaremesh grille with full-width horizontal bars and now had six taillights instead of four.

Parking addressed at St. Mary’s Hospital

The parking at Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose has continued to raise issues for patients, visitors and staff.

“We would like to remind the community that the fire lane is a no parking zone. For the safety of our patients and visitors crossing the parking lot, do not block the wheelchair ramp in front of the main entrance,” said Cherylyn Antymniuk, site administrator at St. Mary’s.

“In addition, if you are picking up or dropping off a patient at the front doors, be timely; this is not a 15-minute loading zone. Discharged patients with mobility issues can be picked up from the ambulance bay, as it directly connects to the emergency department,” she added.

This will decrease the amount of traffic in front of the main entrance and will reduce the risk of falls in between the hospital and your car.

Jerome tells students to remember past, face the future

Jerome, a member of the Gwich’in Tribal Council, values community–something she didn’t have as a child. “I faced the first of many challenges at a young age.”

At the age of eight, she was taken away from her family and sent to residential school for two years.

She didn’t see her family for 10 months of the year, but spent her summers at the family camp, where she and her siblings enjoyed a traditional lifestyle speaking the Gwich’in language.

“There was no point in crying because there was nothing anybody could do.

Although the school was only 40 miles from our home, it seemed like half a world away,” reflected Jerome.

After finishing high school in Inuvik, she was accepted into the elementary teacher education program in the Yukon, where she received one year of training. “I have fond memories of high school as we learned our language and

way of life. Our sense of humour kept us going,” said Jerome.

“One day, I had a nurse check my hearing and she told me I was losing my hearing in one ear and would eventually lose it in the other ear. I told her it didn’t matter because I have things to do. I decided not to let my hearing impairment interfere with my education, that my elder wanted me to finish,” shared Jerome. “In teaching, only my colleagues knew that I was hearing impaired. I decided that I would never have self pity.”

She worked as a traditional language instructor in her home community of Fort McPherson and then applied to the University of Saskatchewan to continue her studies towards a full bachelor of education.

Jerome went back to her community to teach three more years before becoming a principal. “I told my stories about residential schools to Canadian children as a healing process.”

She took a year off and

then worked her way up to assistant superintendent and moved back to Inuvik.

She, along with her husband Fred, started an on-the-land program for children.

“I like to thank my elders for their guidance and direction for my journey. They gave me the tools to move forward. The work that I have accomplished over the years would not have been possible without 100 per cent support of my husband over the past 45 years. The Prime Minister apologized for our dark chapter in history. Since then, I have told my story about overcoming to move forward,” explained Jerome.

“Today, I challenge each of you graduates to move forward in whatever career choice you make. I challenge you to tell my story as I send you out as messengers so that it becomes part of your education as you move forward. This was not an aboriginal problem, it is a Canadian problem. Let us walk forward together and heal.”

The warm weather has brought the two wheelers, both motorized and manually operated, out of the garage and back on City streets and highways.

Alberta RCMP would like to remind motorcycle riders of a few safety tips to ensure they are able to enjoy their ride.

Begin by ensuring operator and passengers are wearing properly fitting and certified helmets.

When considering the helmet you will be wearing make sure it is level from front to back. Check that the front edge sits one to two finger widths above your eyebrows. Add or remove sizing pads, or adjust the ring fit system to make the helmet fit snugly.

Adjust the straps to form a V just below and in front of your earlobes. Do up the chinstrap. Adjust the chinstrap so there’s only one finger-width between your chin and the chinstrap.

Fit the helmet tighter if it moves when you nod, or shake your head and wear your helmet every time you ride your bike, it is the law.

Be visible and stay in sight lines of motorists.

Staying out of blind spots on roadways and in parking lots will help keep other vehicles aware of your presence.

Prior to retiring from his longtime service with Camrose Police Service, Deputy Chief Lee Foreman was nominated by past Camrose Police Service Chief of Police Mark Neufeld, for, and successful in receiving the Order of Merit of the Police Forces.

Only one 10th of one per cent of all police officers in Canada can be appointed to the Order in any given year. “There are about 70,000 police officers in the country so this equates to about 70 per year at maximum,” said Neufeld. “This quota is then apportioned across the provinces with some provinces, such as Ontario and British Columbia and Quebec being far more populace than Alberta.”

The Order of Merit of Police Forces was established in October 2000, and honours the leadership and exceptional service or distinctive merit displayed by the men and women of the Canadian Police Services, and recognizes their commitment to Canada.

“Just knowing some of the previous recipients of this award and to be in the same ranking as some of those people is phenomenal. I am truly honoured,” said Deputy Chief Foreman of being selected for the award.

Because being nominated requires providing the selection committee with background on the nominees, Foreman was aware that Neufeld had nominated him for the award, but never held out any hope that he would be selected.

However, for those who have had the pleasure of working with Lee and many community members who have come to appreciate his dedication to the Police Service and Camrose, being nominated and selected for this award comes as no surprise.

Along with other recipients of the Order, Deputy Chief Foreman will be invited to the Governor General’s Residence (Rideau Hall) in Ottawa to be inducted into the order.

Irvin Herbert Frank May 8, 1936 ~ June 7, 2019 Irvin Herbert Frank of Camrose, Alberta, formerly of Edberg, Alberta, passed away on Friday, June 7, 2019 at the age of 83 years.

Irvin was born on May 8, 1936, in Empress, Alberta, to Adolf and Irma Frank. They lived and farmed in the Bindloss-Acadia Valley district until 1944, when they moved to the Rosebush area east of Edberg and continued to farm.

He schooled in Rosebush for grades 1 to 3, and in Edberg for grades 4 to 12 where he graduated. He started dating Patricia in Grade 10, proposed in September 1958 and was married on August 17, 1959. It would have been 60 years of marriage this August. He obtained his Bachelor of Education in 1964 and continued to advance his education, earning his Diploma of Educational Administration in 1970. He also took his COTC training in Camp Borden, Ontario in between, while attending the University of Calgary.

Irvin led Scouts in the 1960s and 1970s, having two Queen Scouts in this period. He contributed to the building of the Edberg Curling Club and started the first Edberg 4-H Horse Club in which Janice and David were members. He belonged to the Edberg Elks organization, and enjoyed visiting the Edberg Senior Citizens’ Drop In Centre for coffee and pie with friends.

Irvin was a gifted teacher, leader and administrator throughout his teaching career. He taught at the Edberg School from 1957 until December 1985, whereupon moving to CCHS. He continued to lead the CCHS Industrial Arts Department until his retirement in June of 1992. He was very proud of his spotless safety record over 35 years in all of his Industrial Arts labs.

Following a couple years of retirement, he took on the role of County Councillor and served on many committees for twelve years. His love of visiting and meeting new people made this a very rewarding time for Irvin.

His hobbies included leather, woodworking, fishing, hunting, curling, downhill skiing, baseball, snowmobiling, travelling suppers and many others. Numerous memories were made on flyin hunting and fishing trips. Irvin loved his sports and watching all his children and grandchildren playing their chosen sports, brought him hours of joy as he toured Canada and USA watching with his family. He was very proud of his family and all their endeavors. Gardening and pride in his parklike yard kept him busy, allowing him to sneak early potatoes and picking dill for his dill gravy while enjoying them with corn!

Travelling with his RV to Arizona, Palm Springs, across Canada with many a stop at fishing lakes and sportsfields filled their lives with joy and a love of exploring. Trips to Europe, Hawaii, Alaska, New Zealand, Australia, Panama Canal, Mexican Riviera and many other places showed his sense of adventure. Irvin enjoyed dancing with his wife Pat at family weddings and community dances.

Left to cherish his memory are wife, Patricia; two children Janice Frank (Dave) of Alberta Beach, and David Frank (Celine) of Bowmanville Ontario; five grandchildren Curtis, Danielle (Darcy), Corey, Alex and Matthew Jones. He was predeceased by his parents Adolf and Irma Frank; and sisters Elsie, Agnes, Selma and Lillian.

A Funeral Service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2019 from CityLights Church, 4920-48 Street, Camrose, with Rev. Brian Hunter officiating.

If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in Irvin’s memory may be made to the Cross Cancer Institute, Camrose United Church or to the Edberg Lakeview Cemetery.

Leroy “Roy” Henry Eshpeter April 29, 1944 ~ June 12, 2019 Leroy “Roy” Henry Eshpeter was born to Irvin and Irene Eshpeter at Killam, Alberta on April 29, 1944, and passed away at home in Camrose, Alberta after a long and brave battle with lung disease on June 12, 2019 at the age of 75.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife Carolyn; children Sherry (Darrel) Laurenceson of Mannville, Laurie Eshpeter (Melvin Maschke) of Camrose, and Brad (Cindy) of Beaumont; grandchildren Dylan, Blake, Dustin, Tanner, Taryn, Taelar (Jared), Devon, Payton, Parker, Legacy; great-grandchild Greyson; and sisters Judy Anderson of Saskatchewan, Linda (Andy) Nykolaishyn of Strome and Una-Mae (Melvin) Johre of Vermilion.

Roy was predeceased by his parents Irvine and Irene Eshpeter; brother Raymond; sister Carol; and nephews Dean and Lee. At Roy’s request, no formal service will be held.

End of season shenanigans

For as long as I have been a Member of Parliament (MP), the end of the Parliamentary session before the summer recess has always been deemed the “silly season”.

After being in Ottawa for a prolonged period of time, MPs are always anxious to get back to their ridings to enjoy barbecues, parades and other community events. Given there is a federal election on the horizon, now more so than ever, MPs are eager to connect with their constituents. Before we can go home however, the government is determined to ram legislation through the House of Commons at a dangerous pace that leaves little to no time to properly debate. Unfortunately, Bill C-69 is one such piece of legislation.

As I wrote in late January of this year, Bill C-69, the Impact Assessment Act, proposes to remove the approval for pipelines and nuclear facilities from the National Energy Board (NEB) and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). The NEB will be replaced by the Canadian Energy Regulator and a new Impact Assessment Agency that reports to the minister of the environment will be responsible for pipeline approvals.

The imposition of this new agency and the new environmental assessment measures on Canada’s resource sector has provoked strong opposition.

Conservative senators, after conducting numerous hearings, proposed a series of amendments to Bill C-69 that were based on stakeholder feedback and resistance. When the legislation was reported back to the House of Commons, it took half an hour to read all the amendments. After only one hour of debate, the Liberal government gave notice they would shut down debate and they rejected the majority of the amendments even in the face of strong support from a number of premiers for these changes. The premiers of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick and Northwest Territories wrote an urgent letter to the Prime Minister, asking him to accept the amendments or face the very real threat of a national unity crisis.

The Liberal Prime Minister’s complete disregard for the democratically elected premiers of 59 per cent of Canada’s population and the other three provinces who raised serious concerns with Bill C-59 demonstrates arrogance and poor leadership. Furthermore, it is proof he plans to “phase-out” Canada’s oilsands. If elected in October, an Andrew Scheer-led Conservative government will stand up for the oilsands and repeal this bill.

We are strongly opposed to the open-ended timelines for pipeline approvals, the increased potential for political interference in the review process, and the vague project criteria that will allow anti-resource activists to significantly delay approved projects in courts.

The Impact Assessment Act was not the only piece of legislation rushed through Parliament in the last few sitting days. Time allocation was moved on Bill C-68, An Act to Amend the Fisheries Act as well as on Bill C-100, an act to implement the Agreement between Canada, the United States of America and Mexico. These end of session shenanigans further demonstrate the arrogance of the Liberal government who have consistently dismissed the legitimate concerns of opposition parties on important issues and legislation. It also shows their complete hypocrisy. They promised Canadians they would not evoke closure or time allocation on legislation as they would not introduce omnibus bills in which they could hide controversial policy changes such as the use of deferred prosecution agreement tailored made for SNC-Lavalin.

Hopefully, on October 21, Canadians will not forget about all the Liberal broken promises, purported interference in criminal prosecutions, unparliamentary shenanigans and the complete disregard for democratic principles.

Camp empowers young girls

On June 7, a group of young girls, ages nine to 12, gathered at Stoney Creek Centre to participate in what has become an annual Girls’ Camp event, which began when two local mothers Chella Ross and Lyndell Drever decided their own daughters needed positive role models and valuable tools that they could continually draw upon to be their own unique selves.

In the beginning, prior to the formation of Girls’ Camp, Ross and Drever were getting together with their own daughters, on a monthly basis, and providing resources from the community based on the “theme of the month” to help educate their daughters.

“We hoped if they were given information and shown things from others, besides their mothers, it may have more of an impact,” explained Drever.

“Then we started to see a need within the community to provide this to other girls in that age range.”

Each year the program follows a theme, this year’s theme was centred around kindness. Kindness to themselves, their friends, community, all others and the earth.

Joining the day was Battle River Watershed Alliance Samantha Bauer, who taught the girls the value of maintaining and sustaining our watersheds and the important role healthy water bodies play in our existence. The girls particpated in pond

As a social worker, Drever was paying attention to what was happening in other communities and soon the idea of creating a Girls’ Camp became a reality.

“We both recognized, growing up as girls, some of the struggles young girls experience,” explained Drever. “So we thought it was important to empower young girls and teach them to love themselves” Which is exactly the premise behind the name of their initiative, Be”you” tiful.

“This is our third camp,” said Ross. “We (Drever and herself) make a really good team. Lyndell is very organized and I am very creative and we just saw a need to have something in our community and we knew the community would support us.”

Each year the Camp features presenters from within the community (or surrounding area) that represent important stakeholders in making a strong community.

“We have had different presenters each year and they have always been more than willing to donate their time,” said Ross.

“I loved that part,” said Drever. “Having the girls going and doing something kind without someone knowing and not needing a thank you in return.”

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Outreach Coordinator supervises the Outreach program and plays a key role in providing guidance, support, and advocacy for women and children impacted by domestic violence, who are transitioning away from the Shelter or who are living in the community.

The successful candidate will have strong communication and relationship building skills and be knowledgeable of community services and supports, with a strong understanding of family dynamics related to domestic violence. The Outreach Coordinator is required to manage a monthly supervision schedule, demonstrate skills in group facilitation, program delivery, crisis management, community liaison, client advocacy, individual and group counseling, and public presentations. Desired assets include experience and knowledge of working with Indigenous cultures, program implementation, as well as strong base in Trauma Informed practices.

A valid Driver’s License, access to a vehicle, current Criminal and Child Welfare Check, and current First Aid and CPR are required.

Starting wage: $23.49/hour.

As a member of the Shelter’s Management Team, the Outreach Coordinator provides leadership to the overall team and is key to helping the Society reach its Vision and Mission.
