Voter complacency in this election may not be a factor. When five days of advance polls closed on Saturday, 696,000 Albertans had cast their ballots — a new record for the province. That’s almost triple the amount of ballots cast in the 2015 election advance polls, when about 235,000 people voted early, according to Elections Alberta. A poll released on the weekend by Nanos Research, found 44 percent of decided or leaning respondents identified the United Conservative Party as their top choice, while 36 per cent said they would vote for the incumbent New Democrats; 16 per cent said they remained undecided on which party they would be choosing. When is bad news good news?
I’m keenly aware that this Booster is being delivered on provincial Election Day. I don’t know the election results. I do know a lot of people have strong opinions about what election results they want. I’m guessing most of us will think the results are good news or bad news. Few of us will feel neutral. In that opinionated context, I appreciated a story that entrepreneur and author Ajit Nawalkha told Tom Bilyeu during an interview. “Bad news” or “good news” depends on your perspective. ***
Ajit Nawalkha grew up in India in a home with 23 other people. As a boy, he slept in a bed with two other people. Knowing he wanted a different life, he left to pursue his ambitions. Before age 30, he was wealthy beyond any dream he’d imagined as a child. From the outside, he looked like an amazing success. However, on the inside he wasn’t content. He went on a retreat to review his entire life. On every dimension except financial–the state of his body, relationships, adventure travel, inner peace, contributing to the world– he was not experiencing anything like the life he desired. He’d unintentionally become one-dimensional. He knew he had more to learn, not only about finance but about life. He resigned his CEO position and became an apprentice in a small start-up, intending to pay attention to his whole life, not just his financial life. He now has a happy fulfilling personal life as well as financial success, and is on the way to achieving a lifetime intention of having a positive impact on one million people. He credits at least some of his life success to wisdom from his father and grandfather. Here’s a story his father told him. ***
When Ajit’s father was a young man, he and his father (Ajit’s grandfather) started a gemstone business. As they were beginning to build up the business, they got a really big contract. They thought, “This is where we become successful.” Ajit’s father’s work was to take raw uncut stones and convert them into precious gemstones. They would go out into some international place and buy raw uncut stones. When they got stones for their big contract, their business partner took all the raw uncut stones and ran away with it. Ajit’s father was destroyed. He thought, “We’re done. This is over. There’s no future for us. And I don’t know how to put food on the table.” Ajit’s grandfather looked at his son, smiled and said, “Let’s go out and get some sweets to celebrate.” Ajit’s father was confused. He said, “What are you talking about? I’m not saying we got the stones. We lost the stones. We don’t have them anymore.” The grandfather said, “No, I’m celebrating two things today.” Ajit’s father couldn’t imagine what. The grandfather said, “One is that you now realize that in life, things will go bad. This is not the first time or the last time that’s going to happen. That’s just how life is.” He continued. “The second thing that I want to celebrate today is that a few months from now, because of your intelligence, because of your hard work, you’ll be past this and you’ll be okay. There is nothing for you to worry about here.”

For this summer’s Big Valley Jamboree, Camrose City council is being asked by the organizers to approve a temporary liquor store on the BVJ site. This is a short-sighted, irresponsible request that shouldn’t be approved. The Big Valley Jamboree provides a major economic boon to the merchants of Camrose, including the five independent and four chain liquor stores. These stores not only pay taxes to the City of Camrose, but also support local community events, and other Camrose businesses through the purchase of advertising and supplies. What responsibility would a four-day temporary liquor store have to the City or its residents? What benefit would anyone outside of the Big Valley Campground see from the profits? A temporary liquor store at Big Valley Jamboree is a slap in the face to local Camrose businesses. How can City council talk about supporting the local community when they’re considering doing the exact opposite? Daniel van Kesteren, Camrose Volunteer week

taking place, as well as other events at the Bailey Theatre and the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre take a look and see the dedicated, friendly volunteers that will make those events special. Thank you to all the volunteers who help out in the many organizations in Camrose which help others; especially Martha’s Table, Neighbor Aid, Meals on Wheels, helping at St. Mary’s Hospital, in our schools and working with candidates before the election. I was horrified to witness what happened at an advanced polling station, Tuesday, April 9. We decided to vote at the forum advanced polling station at Augustana Campus in Camrose. Upon entering the polling station inside the doors was a circle of young male students talking about a certain political party. We had to walk around this group to get to the polling station and as we proceeded, we overheard one individual tell another what party to vote for. This was a few feet from the polling station and within earshot of both the returning and receiv-
ing officers. Neither made an effort to stop what was happening in front of them. We got our ballots and advanced to the booth to cast our votes. When we wanted to return our ballots to the ballot box, we were stopped by a class of university students walking by in front of us, preventing us from casting our ballots into the ballot box. While waiting, we overheard from that same circle of students saying vote for the (unnamed) political party, as the class of students walked by. The officers sat there doing nothing, yet they are paid to perform their electorial duties. What happened to the days when you were not to talk politics anywhere near a polling station, especially within. We are sure the tactics of these particular students was to intimidate other students and others as how to vote. Nor do we believe that the electoral officers should be paid. This has been the poorest polling station we have ever cast a vote in, a mere hallway. These premises should not be considered to host another election. What a great message to teach our children and grandchildren. In life, things will go bad sometimes. We can suffer terribly and hang on to the pain, or we can acknowledge the pain, re-group and see it as an opportunity. A friend calls that, “gifts wrapped in barbed wire.” Ajit says the wisdom he gained from his father and grandfather enabled him to become more playful about life, to welcome things he didn’t understand and move into them as a learning opportunity. That led to a deeply fulfilling life in every dimension, not only for himself and his family but in service to the larger world. Bad news or good news? Whatever we make of it. ***

A female reported to Camrose Police that she left her vehicle parked in the area of the Camrose Composite High School for approximately one hour. When she returned to her unlocked vehicle her purse, which included her driver’s license and credit cards had been stolen. A female attended the police station to obtain a criminal record check. The female was arrested when it was determined that she had an outstanding warrant out of Calgary. The 50-year-old is in custody waiting on a bail hearing.

Camrose County partnered with Augustana Community Service Learning for the January to April term. The students assisted with three projects: Road Use Policy Research and Development Project in conjunction with public works and protective services; Pelican Point Reforestation Project in conjunction with agricultural services and ALUS Terms of Reference Project in conjunction with agricultural services. Augustana student, Beaudon Rogers provided a review of the project, specifically on the special haul permit policy. “We were tasked with reviewing the special haul permits and try to improve on efficacy. We were unaware of the number of permits and what the differences were. Second, we never developed policy, so we had to grasp the language and structure of the policies. Fortunately, we were provided with thorough research, which listed what other counties in the area were doing different than Camrose County,” said Rogers. The students presenting their findings for council’s information. “We found out the bulk of policy was functioning very well. We inserted a few changes to increase efficiency that were recommended by employees. Lastly, we had a meeting with those who had a direct stake in it (employees) and brought our policy with changes for review. They liked what we did, but offered some suggestions. We updated the policy and have a new copy.” Community Service Learning is a program through the University of Alberta Augustana that encourages students to step outside of the traditional university classroom in order to make connections between theory and practice. “We thought about adding a small fee for the permits and inspections to create a little cash flow. We asked that people to get a permit a week before they haul, to be more efficient and provide more time to get it in order. We added a rush fee for those who come at the last minute.” The students complete approximately 20 hours of volunteer work to benefit the rural community. The policies will be brought back to council at a later date.

The health benefits of staying active are irrefutable. A body in motion stays in motion, but not everyone is about heading to the gym or racing down a ski hill. Physical activity can be as simple as donning a good pair of walking shoes, and bundling up in cooler outside temperatures and going for a walk. Health benefits
“There are many health benefits to walking,” explained Walkable Camrose chairperson Lucy Ernst. “Walking plays an important role in preventing chronic diseases. The Public Health Agency of Canada says physical activity, such as walking, has been shown to reduce the risk of over 25 chronic conditions. Walking also has many other health benefits, such as strengthening your bones, helping maintain a healthy weight and improving your mood.” Ernst reported The Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines recommendations to include: adults, 18 to 64 years at least 150 minutes of moderate-tovigorous intensity aerobic physical activity per week, in bouts of 10 minutes or more. “This can be something as simple as going for a walk during a coffee
break, or walking to do an errand. If you walk a few times a day in short bouts, the benefits are the same as going for one longer walk.” Walkable Camrose
The Walkable Camrose committee shares common visions for Camrose that include: recognizing the value of walking not only as a form of recreation, but also as a form of active transportation, nurturing and sustaining a healthy, efficient and safe community for all residents; and engaging citizens and partner organizations to work together to identify, evaluate and assist with overcoming physical, social, institutional and other barriers that may limit walkability. “Walking is the most popular form of physical activity for Albertans, as indicated in the Alberta Government Recreation Survey Report in 2013,” said Ernst. “Research shows that people who live in places where walking is easy and enjoyable are healthier, and that is why Walkable Camrose is committed to this work. We advocate regularly for areas within our community to be safe and accessible for walking so that community members of all

ages and abilities have the option of walking, whether recreationally or as a form of active transportation.” Camrose offers over 37 km of beautiful trail systems throughout the city. “We are fortunate to live in a community where we have many options for walking,” said Ernst, “Whether you choose the picturesque trail system, or one of the city’s two indoor walking tracks on
days when conditions outdoors aren’t favourable for a walk.” Are you sitting at your desk too long, stressed over decisions to make in your life or bored? Just get up, get out and walk it off. Trail etiquette
City staff ask that all users of the trail system remember trail etiquette. Keep pathways clear if you do stop, move completely off the trail or take
advantage of one of the many benches provided. Slow down and look both ways before crossing roads and trail intersections. Be seen and heard. At night, wear clothing that can be seen with reflective material and equip your bike with lights, reflectors and a bell. If wearing headphones, be aware of your surroundings at all times. Make your presence known by speaking up when approaching other users from behind. Do not pass on the right. Be cognizant of trail conditions and possible hazards and report any vandalism or hazards to the City of Camrose. Use garbage receptacles provided, pick up after your pets and don’t abuse the trails or natural surroundings. The use of helmets, bells, horns and other protective equipment when using bikes or inline skates is advised for your own safety and the safety of others. No motorized vehicles are permitted on the trails, with the exception of those authorized by the City. Do your part in keeping washroom facilities clean and usable for others.

Canada summer jobs By Murray Green
It is never too early to think about jobs for this summer. Employers can apply today to get funding to hire a young Canadian this summer. Canada’s prosperity increasingly depends on young Canadians succeeding. By supporting them in getting good quality summer jobs, young Canadians will gain valuable skills and workplace experience towards starting a meaningful career, all while helping build our workforce. Patty Hajdu, Canadian Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, launched the employer application period for the 2019 Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program. “Young Canadians are not just the leaders of tomorrow – they are leaders today. That’s why our government is focused on ensuring they get the skills and training they need to succeed; and Canada Summer Jobs is an incredibly important program for helping young people achieve this. Providing youth with opportunities for paid, meaningful work experience, helps ensure they have a fair shot at success,” said Hajdu. Not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers and private employers with up to 50 employees, can now apply for funding to hire a young Canadian this summer. The program creates good quality summer job opportunities and valuable work experience for youth/ students aged 15 to 30.
Summer jobs are a great way for young Canadians to gain skills and valuable experience to help build their resumes, all while earning a fair wage. They also help organizations fill labour gaps during the busy summer months. Changes have been made to CSJ 2019, that will make it easier than ever for employers to provide good quality summer jobs and for young people to access them. Fewer barriers to good quality jobs: expanded eligibility to include all youth/ students between the ages of 15 and 30 who are legally entitled to work in Canada–not just students. Updated eligibility criteria: to reflect feedback received from employers and organizations, the eligibility criteria have been changed to set out what is and isn’t eligible for funding. Better job matching: All positions will be posted on jobbank.gc.ca and on the mobile app, to help match young people with employers and good quality jobs. Small businesses with 50 or fewer employees, notfor-profit employers and public sector organizations that can provide good quality summer jobs for youth are invited to apply for funding from the Government of Canada. Employers are strongly encouraged to open an account on the secure government grants and contributions online service portal; a one-time process that will allow them to apply for this and other funding opportunities across Employment and Social Development Canada.

Camrose candidate Kevin Smook welcomed Alberta Party leader Stephen Mandel to Camrose at the Spotlight Bistro on April 8. “I want to thank Kevin for running because I know how much work it is to be a candidate. It takes energy and commitment day in and day out where you have to knock on doors, talk to people and answer questions,” said Mandel. “Camrose is special, I once owned property here, it is a city that has that personality that is sustainable, you have a wonderful theatre and have a committed community and that allows for long term stability,” Mandel added. “We talk about creating jobs, but it is really about creating a better quality of life. They are not separate, but interwoven together. Quality of life is for all of us. We have put together the most forward thinking day care program. We believe that if you want people to go back to work or go to school, we are going to need day care. When people are going to school to get a better job then they are going to create a better quality of life for their family. There is nothing more important than improving our quality of life,” he told the audience. “We have to be creative and having a strong postsecondary university or college allows us to do that. At the same time we have to create work and the Alberta Party can create that kind of an environment where you can do both, get a job or go back to school. One of the most important tools is the Internet,” explained Mandel. That means ensuring high-quality, reliable and affordable fibre-optic broadband services to every community in Alberta within three years.

“It is critically important for the economies of rural Alberta that they have fibre-optic Internet. Fully connecting our rural places to the global community will help ensure longterm economic sustainability. We cannot allow our two-tier society to continue. Advances in health care and industry require that all Albertans have the ability to have affordable and accessible broadband internet. Failing in this objective will only result in marginalizing a large part of our community. We must invest now to ensure that every Albertan has the opportunity to participate in global opportunities tomorrow.” He said if people want to work at home, or close to home, they need connectivity. Seniors are a growing
population. “We want to keep seniors in their homes. We need better ways to serve the same people. We have three layers of government, but you are one taxpayer. We want to listen to people to make life better in the province. Not just the rich or poor, but for everybody. We need a government that can do that,” said Mandel. In the last election people voted against the government. “What they got is a government people are not happy with. This time, vote for something. Your vote should be personal and a positive thing. If you believe that the Alberta Party will give you the best government, then by all means vote for us. Don’t vote for a party because you don’t like another party. We are in the centre and we believe
most Albertans are in the centre. Don’t be afraid when voting, be more afraid of what you will get when you vote for the other two,” suggested the leader. “I believe in supporting individuals in a kind society, but I also know the importance of a good economy. We want to create a future for people, that’s what the party is about. Vote for something you want. At the end of the day you will have a better government and a better province.” Someone suggested that if a minority government is formed, the Alberta Party will have the deciding vote on many issues. “We offer an option to make Alberta a better place to live,” responded Mandel. “People liked the fact we didn’t get into the fight-
ing with the other parties. Albertans don’t like to see the fighting. People see we are balanced and are a better option. Our ideas come from the people, not from the top down. We believe in free votes at the legislature (except for the budget). We want a minister for children, another for seniors and we want to be creative.” “When I heard suggestions, while going door knocking, I gave Stephen a call on his cell and said what do you think of this? We have that contact from the people to the leader,” said Smook. “Maybe I didn’t catch it, but I believe Stephen was the only leader that mentioned rural Alberta. Rural is where we are and that is who I’m fighting for if I’m elected.” Mandel outlined how an Alberta Party government would boost the province’s agriculture and agri-food industry. The plan includes the creation of a new innovation institute focused on investing in export markets and modernizing the Agriculture Financial Services Corporation. “Albertans are deeply proud of what we grow and make in our province. The agriculture sector has huge growth potential for our province. We must support farmers with smart government support. Changing the way, we grow, raise, process and sell our agricultural products, will create a healthier environment, and a stronger economy,” said Mandel. An Alberta Party government will grow Alberta’s agriculture and agri-food industry by $1 billion from $3.5 billion to $4.5 billion and create 6,000 new jobs and generate over $100 million in new revenues for the provincial and municipal governments.

All seven candidates in the new Camrose riding participated in a forum at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre to answer questions for voters. Kevin Smook, Alberta Party; Morgan Bamford, NDP; Jackie Lovely, UCP; Wesley Caldwell, Freedom Conservative Party; Don Dubitz, Alberta Independence Party; Bonnie Tanton; Independent and Sandra Kim, Alberta Advantage Party give local voters an option on election day, April 16. Following are some questions and answers heard at the forum.
What is your vision or plan for protecting water quality and quantity within this jurisdiction? “The Alberta Stewardship Act came in under the former PC’s created, in theory, a water protection act. It was supposed to work with municipalities, but didn’t work out very successfully. I need to look at how we can amend Bill 36 to ensure our watersheds are being protected, protections in place for fracking and that we have the proper regulations in place so we are not contaminating our fresh water resources,” said Kim. “As a biologist I am heavily invested in water

and that it is available not just to municipalities, but for wildlife. We would continue to enforce the water act. We would also review that the policy is appropriate for industry. In some
cases we may have gone too far in wetland policies and I would like to re-look at that,” said Caldwell. “We need to respect the Battle River Watershed Alliance in our area. We need the Alberta Energy Regulator to account for the decisions that were made. I know there is some nervousness around our water that originates from Battle Lake and concerns about fracturing going on there and how that might impact us. We need to watch that closely and stay on top of that so we do have a protected water source,” said Smook. “There has been a lot of talk about slashing red
tape and attract businesses to become prosperous again. I would promise to be very diligent to look at regulations in order to protect our water because we all have a vested interest in keeping our water clean for generations to come,” said Tanton. “Rachel Notley is fighting for what matters, like clean air, water and landscape. We, as Albertans, are proud of the resources we have. One of the things we will do to make sure water quality and concerns are elevated, is to commit stable water funding is in place, like they do in the Battle River region.” Continued on page 14

Morgan Bamford let his name stand as the NDP candidate for the Camrose riding because he wants a better future for Albertans. “We have been hard at work across this district in places like Killam, Daysland, Tofield, New Norway and in Camrose. This has been billed as an election of the generation. We can either elect a government that will look to the future and focus on tomorrow, or one that will hope for a return to the past, digging in its heals and crossing its fingers that it can go back to yesterday,” said Bamford, Camrose NDP candidate. “Today is different than yesterday and tomorrow will be different than today. I’m running on Rachel Notley’s team because I believe in tomorrow thinking–protecting the things that matter to us today, like health care and education, but also preparing for Alberta’s future by ensuring the things that matter to families will be there when they need them. Lovely wants to get people back to work By Murray Green
No denying that Jackie Lovely and her United Conservative Party team in the Camrose riding have worked long and hard on the campaign to gain a seat in the legislature. “We have 375 ideas on how to turn the economy around and we want Alberta to get back to work again. We want to make sure they can have jobs and their families can have jobs and to have a good lifestyle here in Alberta,” said Lovely, as she met with Camrose County councillors on April 9. “Our conservative government would provide municipalities with more autonomy and transparency. We want to maintain provincial dollars for 2019-20 and we want to ensure predictable long term funding for infrastructure for municipalities. We want to amend the use of the municipal act to allow tax advantages to attract investors for development. We want to consult with municipalities to have a funding formula to increase law enforcement,” said Lovely. “We want to cut legislation and red tape to help municipalities and ratepayers.” She was asked about working with the federal government. “Alberta has been generous with equalization payments. Over the years we have been prosperous and happy to share our financial wealth, but we are on track to having $100 billion in debt right now. What we are proposing is to take on (Prime Minister Justin) Trudeau. Our leader Jason Kenney has met with other premiers from Saskatchewan, Ontario, New Brunswick and Northwest Territories, we are going to fight to get our pipeline built and we are going to demand fairness on payments,” shared Lovely. “About 29 per cent of auto thefts occur in rural Alberta and that is staggeringly high. Some rural communities have seen an increase of 250 per cent. It seems to be the same people doing the crimes. The RCMP pick them up and it is basically a catch and release program because they get a slap on the wrist. It is not fair to people in our commu-
nity who can’t protect themselves. In the 10 unsafest cities in Canada, seven are in Alberta. Our solution is to hire 50 new prosecutors and support staff to deal with the backlog in the system. We want to increase funding, $20 million over four years) for ALERT in Alberta,” Lovely added. “We want to increase the drug and alcohol programs to try and break the cycle of offenders. We believe criminals can redeem themselves. If more people are working, then crime rates will go down. We want to toughen the repeat offender policy,” said Lovely. Reeve Don Gregorwich asked about the red tape with environment that needs streamlining the County, in trying to build or fix a road. “The shortage of staff in Alberta Environment has caused delays and it costs our taxpayers money. They have lost common sense. That has to be a priority because it will enhance every economy from rural to the provincial government,” said Gregorwich, about the department. “We are going to have a minister of red tape to reduce delays in every department. We need to get things moving and not get tangled up in unnecessary red tape,” offered Lovely. She was also asked about getting products such as canola to China and India again. However, it is a federal jurisdiction. “Our solution is to get a pipeline built and get the economy rolling again,” said Lovely. The County wanted to know more about infrastructure building and maintenance in the future. Ring roads have been built around Edmonton and Calgary and yet very little construction is done in rural Alberta. “We want to bring back priorities of road construction across the province and that includes the County as well. We want to form partnerships (instead of the County being left with the bill) to fund projects. I told Kenney that I will represent the Camrose area and fight for those projects,” Lovely said.

The United Conservative Party is going to implement a common sense conservation plan and that recognizes recreation, economic use, conservation can and should support one another. We will make sure all develop has an environmental impact study because we all drink the water and we want our children and future generations,” added Lovely. “This topic is near and dear to my heart because I worked with water resources for nearly 32 years. I know the importance of fresh water and wetlands. We have licenses to use water and I would definitely like to see the fresh water that we use to put down into the wells now for oil production be replaced with non-potable water,” said Dubliz. What is your stance on a provincial sales tax, or what alternative do you have? “I’m not on board with a provincial sales tax. I need to do some more research. I’m not in favour at this time, but I am open for more discussion,” said Tanton. “This comes up every now and again. It is not something our party is thinking about now. Like Bonnie, I would like to learn more. We have a plan to diversity our economy. We don’t have a plan to give a $4.5 million tax break to the wealthy like the UCP does. We don’t believe in that,” said Bamford. “We will not implement a sales tax. In fact, Bill 1 will be to repeal the carbon tax, scrapping this tax will help Albertans pay off their bills and job creators will be able to add 6,000 as a result of the removal of the carbon tax. The United Conservative Party will challenge the Trudeau government in court along with other provinces. We should be using our made in Alberta technology to develop cleaner fossil fuels and export the technology to countries like China and India that has a huge problem,” said Lovely. “If we can eliminate our transfer payments to the federal government, we have a problem,” said Dubitz. “I’m going to give you a number that you are not going to like. The GST we pay on the carbon levy in Alberta is $150 million to Ottawa every year. That is $150 million we are not keeping in our pocket. That is on top $2 billion the carbon levy is already taking out of our pockets. That is a lot of money that could be better used in our households, in our budgets and spend the way we see fit. Nobody wants to see a carbon levy or sales tax. I don’t think anyone wants to see massive increasing debt. We need to find the efficiencies in the system and find the bottlenecks. Let’s fix the leaky roof, find the problems before throwing more money at it and increase my taxation,” said Kim, to a great ovation. “We have formed an alternative budget without a sales tax. It is not going to be part of our plan,” Caldwell said. “The Alberta party is not considering a sales tax. Over the last three years the Alberta Party was the only one to provide a shadow budget, although the new party (Freedom Conservative Party) now has one, showing Albertans are financial path. We believe in living within our means. We will get control of spending, develop a plan to eliminate debt and balance the budget sooner, rather than later. We will lead by example. We have to start by taking control of the legislature,” said Smook.

Local bands will be helping local people when they hit the stage at the Rosapolooza Bands and Beers Benefit Bash at the Norsemen Inn on Friday, April 26. The music event in the Tap Room and brewery will feature local bands Third Degree, Godfrey Blaque and Big Smoke Revival. A few special guests may be added throughout the evening. Tickets are available at Martha’s Music and the Norsemen Inn front desk. Doors open at 6 p.m. and a silent auction will also be held. The proceeds from the night go towards assisting families or individuals in need within the community. Third Degree are a great band to heat up the dance floor. The band is made up of Mick Dingo on guitar, Tom Humeny on bass, Doug Hartman on
guitar and Jason Sabbe on drums. Third Degree will also be at the Big Owl in Killam on May 5 at 8:30 p.m. Godfrey Blaque features great classic rock tunes from the ‘60s and ‘70s. Last year marked their 50th year in the music industry. The five-piece band fills the room with rich vocals and smooth sounds. The band members usually feature Dennis Gustavson on lead guitar and vocals, Jim Lambe on drums and Dave Lambe on base guitar and vocals, Jim Hough on the keyboard and Jan Nowakowski on guitar and vocals. Big Smoke Revival is a three piece rock, rhythm and blues band from Camrose. Band members are Jordan Leden on lead guitar, vocals, Darwin Reddekopp on bass and vocals and Jeff Nyback on drums.

Former Team Canada Olympian Glenn Rupertus is still collecting medals in biathlon. Rupertus earned four gold medals at the Canadian Championships that just happened in Whistler Olympic Park in BC recently. The three time Olympian in the sport of biathlon
with the Alberta team out of Augustana University, now lives in Courtenay, BC. His gold medal came more than 20 years after his last Olympics in Lillihammer, Norway. “The conditions were very warm making the late afternoon starts challenging,” said Glenn. He won gold in the six kilometre sprint event, gold in a 10 km individual race, gold in 7.5 km pursuit, and a fourth gold in the two man relay with Mike Akey from BC. Glenn was the fastest man in the relay race winning over all the 35 plus men as he raced in the 50 plus category. “Thanks to the support and encouragement of my father Orville Rupertus and Dr. Gerry Gibson, I plan to go to the World Biathlon Championships in Finland next winter,” said Glenn.

Jamboree rounds out line-up By Murray Green
The Big Valley Jamboree announced the final performers to round out the festival’s lineup from Aug. 1 to 4. Pam Tillis, High Valley and Mackenzie Porter will be joining the outdoor festival. Tillis is a country music legend who knows all about breaking the platinum barrier. With six number ones and 14 top 10 singles, more than 30 singles, she has earned her spot among country music royalty. High-energy performers from Alberta’s own High Valley, a duo who didn’t really know how country music was supposed to sound when they began crafting their music. This outstanding pair steadily honed an old school modern style once their remote town of La Crete, received an FM radio station, and the result is one of the best acts in country music today. Rounding out the lineup is Mackenzie Porter. Growing up on the family farm near Medicine Hat, Porter’s dad and grandfather always had country music playing on the radio, providing an authentic soundtrack to her bonafide rural roots. It wasn’t long before she found her voice as a singer and songwriter, and CCMA and Juno nominations soon followed. Thursday

Submitted Band students from Ecole Charlie Killam (director Bob Bailey) and ECCHS (director Graham Green) were recently selected to the Northern Alberta Junior High School Honour Band. These students were referred by their respective directors and then chosen from all applicants to participate in this yearly activity, sponsored by the Alberta Band Association. The band came together in late February for three intensive days of rehearsal with guest director Ken Rogers of Lethbridge culminating in a concert on Friday, March 1. The band programs have had many students represent their schools in this band over the years, and in all cases the students have come back with new friends and a wonderful musical experience to remember. Kindness of strangers
When we drove our blue camper van across Canada before children (this is what BC stands for), we thought it was interesting that everyone was so proud of their area. Everywhere we went, people were excited to talk about the things we should see and do in their community. We were surprised at how long we spent just in Saskatchewan! There was a dance hall with horse hair under the floor for extra cushioning, a salty lake to float in and a drive-in movie theatre. On the Gaspé Peninsula, we came upon little villages where no English was spoken. At one gas station, we asked where the bathroom was, using our (very) rusty high school French. “Bonjour, où est la toilette?” we asked. They responded with a few sentences all in French, but I caught the word “gauche”. Shoot, was that left or right? (I said our French was rusty, right?) Oh well, 50/50 chance of success as we headed out the building to our right. The staff member called after us, “Non, gauche, gauche!” and pointed in the opposite direction. Further down the road we pulled into a campground. The camp host saw where we were from and said in a thick French accent, “Ahh, Alberta, I have just the spot for you!” We weren’t sure if this reaction was good or bad. He booked us into a site beside the only other English speaking couple in the campground, a retired RCMP officer and retired hairdresser from Nova Scotia. We started chatting with them and ended up spending the evening together in their camper having drinks and playing a board game. They invited us to stay at their house when we made it to the Halifax area. Later in the trip, we called them once we were nearing Halifax. They directed us to their house in a rain storm, and we were parking out front when they said, “Oh, you don’t need to sleep out here. We have a spare bedroom made up for you.” This was a pleasant surprise–we would have been happy just to plug in, but this was even better. Not only did we sleep inside on a queen-sized bed, but they provided robes for going in the hot tub and then they made breakfast in the morning. We wondered how they got guests to leave. Then our new friends asked where we wanted to go. We said the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site, Pier 21 and Peggy’s Cove. They said, “Okay, we’ll get the car.” Get the car? We suddenly had local tour guides! Besides touring us around the Citadel, Pier 21 and Peggy’s Cove, they also showed us the granite memorial with slits in the top near the site of the Swissair Flight 111 plane crash, and explained that if you looked through the slits to the water, that was exactly where the plane crashed. As one of the crash investigators, he had a lot of interesting information about the tragedy. After a few days, we said that we wanted to head into downtown Halifax to meet up with a newly married couple we had met in Newfoundland. He said, “Not in the camper van. Your canoe and bikes will get stolen. Take our car.” Take their car? We weren’t sure if we’d heard correctly. I think our mouths dropped open a bit. We had spent about three days with our new friends. So, we left our camper parked in front of their house and accepted their car keys. Feeling a bit like teenagers getting the car from dad, we headed into the city and had a fun night out. A few days later, we waved good-bye and continued on our journey. Almost 12 years have passed since we saw these Maritime friends, but we still faithfully send Christmas letters and photos, saying how our year has been and showing how our children are growing and changing. What’s the moral of the story? Befriend people from Nova Scotia (just kidding, although this way of thinking has actually served me well over the years). Loan your car to people you don’t really know (just kidding, it’s probably not a good idea). I do know that a lot of good memories and stories can come from simple kindness to strangers. As one wise grandpa once said, “That may not be how it happened, but that’s how I remember it.”

When life gives you lemons, build a stand By Lori Larsen
Nothing says summer like the sight of a young person sitting curb side at a homemade lemonade stand selling a refreshment to passersby. As a way of educating youth on the challenges of owning and operating a business, the not-for-profit Prepared4Life organization under the umbrella of Community Futures, is bringing Lemonade Day to Northern Alberta. This is a free, fun, experiential program with a mandate to teach children how to start, own and operate their own business – in this case, a lemonade stand. “As much as it is planting the seed of entrepreneurship in children at a young age, they are not just learning entrepreneurship skills. They are also learning life skills,” said Rural Alberta Business Centre (RABC) small business advisor Louise Jones. “The idea is to get them (participants) to set a goal, make a plan, work the plan and achieve success. These are life skills. “This is an international day,” explained Jones. “It started in Texas and is held in Canada, United States, South Africa – it is in a lot of different countries. “This is new to our region and involves different communities throughout northern Alberta. The winner from the Camrose event will go on to compete in the Northern Alberta portion.” The goal of the program is to make the experience of starting and operating a business as realistic as possible. Interested participants are required to register online at lemonadeday.org/northernalberta by the May 1 deadline. “All participants must have a mentor,” noted Jones, “Whether that be a parent, neighbour, friend or business owner.” After May 1, participants will be required to attend two evening mentoring sessions where they will receive backpacks, workbooks and will be given further instructions on the program.
They will then work on their business plan, complete the entrepreneur workbook (with assistance from a parent, guardian or mentor), begin designing and building their stand, and work on their lemonade recipe. “During a second meeting, the participants are required to bring a sample of their lemonade and one of the participants will be awarded $500 and a ribbon that they can display on their booth, for best tasting lemonade,” said Jones. On June 22, all participants will set up their lemonade stands throughout the City at their chosen location in preparation for not only being judged, but selling their lemonade. “They have to find an investor(s) to acquire a loan to build their stand and finance any other expenses,” said Jones.
Community partners throughout the City are also encouraged to offer locales and sign provided leases for these young entrepreneurs to set up their stand. “Afterwards, we ask the participants to use the money they made to pay back their investors, keep some profit for themselves and share some of their profit with a charity of their choice.” This way, the participants not only learn the value of owning and operating their own business, but giving back. The program is open to all school-aged children/youth (prekindergarten to high school). “We do suggest if it is a very young participant, they consider teaming up with a bit older participant, for example a six-year-old may want to team up with a 14-year-old. All participants are encouraged to use their mentors, however, throughout the entire process.” Community businesses and individuals are invited to get involved with this amazing opportunity to induce business savvy in our future generations, by becoming a mentor, lease holder (location for stand) or by sponsoring through donation. “We also hope to see people out on June 22 enjoying some lemonade,” smiled Jones. Contest sponsorships include $500 for the Local Entrepreneur of the Year Contest, $500 for the Area Best Tasting Lemonade Contest and $500 for the Area Best Stand Lemonade Contest. Intermunicipal Plan agreement stalls By Murray Green
Camrose County and the City of Camrose have agreed to disagree. However, that could cost both rural and city ratepayers a lot of money if the two sides don’t come together on an Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP) within the next year. An IDP document is an Intermunicipal Development Plan, which provides a framework for long range planning for lands of mutual interest along the fringe area of shared municipal borders. The provincial government has imposed a deadline of April 2020 for municipalities to have an IDP in place. If the current IDP were to be repealed, the City and County would be in contravention of the Act, which would trigger an expensive arbitration process and may jeopardize Provincial Grant Funds. Councillor Lyle reported to County council on a City/County Intermunicipal Committee meeting held on March 25, to specifically address the issues that have been brought up regarding the City/County IDP. During that meeting a motion was made to recommend that their respective councils repeal the IDP effective April 1. That motion was defeated following lengthy discussion as the County did not support repealing the IDP. “Subsequently, a motion was made and passed unanimously that the committee recommend to their respective councils that the municipalities jointly engage the services of a mediator to facilitate those discussions regarding proposed changes to the current IDP,” explained County administrator, Paul King. At the March 26 regular council meeting councilor Jack Lyle moved “That Camrose County council work with the City of Camrose to retain a mediator from the municipal affairs roster to facilitate discussions on the Intermunicipal Development Plan with the City of Camrose, with administration to develop a timeline to be brought back to the committee,” Lyle also reported. “In continuing with that thought, I was very disappointed with the City in trying to repeal the IDP. I got the feeling we need a mediator to go through all of this. They left themselves an out, basically, saying if they don’t get their own way, they are going to repeal it. In the end it is going to arbitration whether we like it or not.” Attending the committee meeting were representatives from the City: councillor Greg Wood, councillor David Ofrim Mayor Norm Mayer as well as city manager Malcolm Boyd, and staff Aaron Leckie and Carla Johnson; and representing the County: councillors Jack Lyle, Brian Willoughby, and Trevor Miller
as well as CAO Paul King, and staff Teresa Gratrix and Anjah Howard. Wood chaired the meeting King summarized the County’s position: 1. The area defined needs to be reciprocal, the County needs to have comment on development within the City. 2. A significantly smaller defined area for the IDP of a quarter mile on either side of the shared municipal boundary. Eight years ago, the City had a major annexation, to accommodate a 50-year growth of 2.5 per cent. That hasn’t happened. As such, the amount of land in the City is more than enough for more than 50 years. We don’t want to restrict long term growth of the County industries. 3. Change of cooperation zone to defined IDP area. “I received the same feeling as Jack. It seems that the City wants to control the new boundaries and all of our industrial areas. They want to be the ones making the decisions on what goes on in the County. The lines are drawn around the industrial areas, wherever they can see the money. I’m not sure why they need to control 227 quarters, that’s 36,000 acres that the City seems to think they need to make the decisions on,” said councillor Willoughby. “The biggest thing is they think the definition of agricultural needs to be redefined, basically to better suit them.” Councillor Miller echoed the comment and asked, “What is the cost of going to arbitration? Based on previous history and discussions with staff at Municipal Affairs, if we go to arbitration, we are looking at $300,000 for us,” said King. “All of this because the City wants the control. As soon as they lost the appeal, they want to scrap the whole thing. They are taking their toys and going home,” added Willoughby. “The key here is that we are required to act in good faith, which we are doing, by not repealing and seeking mediation. We will attend with an open mind and take what the mediator says into consideration, very similar to what we did with recreation. We might not like everything the mediator says, but we will consider it in good faith,” said King. “It will take at least a year to get through a mediation process. It’s not just the cost, it’s the extra time commitment from staff that is going to be exorbitant to make this whole thing work,” continued King. “If the City draws this line for the IDP, and I want to put up a shop, it will be industrial and not agricultural. It should be all agricultural,” said Willoughby. “Someone has to have a common sense approach.”

Police administer life saving drugs April 11, 2019
A male advised Camrose Police his unlocked vehicle was rummaged through, while parked on 53 Avenue in the 6200 block. The male could not initially determine if anything had been stolen. Police responded to 48B Avenue in the 5700 block after receiving a complaint
from residents of two people laying on the ground in their parking lot. Police attended and administered Naloxone as the two individuals both displayed shallow breathing. Both showed signs of improved breathing after which EMS attended and transported the patients to St. Mary’s Hospital.

It was pleasure to welcome Brianna Hughes of Wainwright to Ottawa during the week of April 1. Brianna, who is studying human ecology at the University of Alberta, was in the nation’s capital with the Daughters of the Vote. This event is organized by Equal Voice Canada to promote the engagement of women in politics. About 338 young women were selected to represent each riding across Canada. I was honoured to have Ms. Hughes take my seat in the House of Commons as all the seats in Parliament were occupied by aspiring and inspiring ladies from across the country. This bold initiative began in 2017 to mark the 100th anniversary of the federal suffrage for women in Canada. The objective of the week-long event is to ensure that the chosen 338 “emerging young women leaders” learn about Canada’s political institutions and to encourage them to become involved in the political arena. Equal Voice, a multi-partisan organization, has been advocating for the equal representation of women in Canada’s Parliament; in provincial and territorial legislatures; and in municipal and band councils. While the 2015 election resulted in the highest number of elected women ever, only 26 per cent of our federal members of Parliament are female. This number is a long way off from representing the number of women in the general population of Canada. Although we do have approximately the same proportion of female MPs as the average European country and slightly more than in the United States, Canada still ranks only 50th in the world. Each of the participants of the Daughters of the Vote event were provided the opportunity to address their “Parliamentary colleagues” (for a brief time). They made statements on issues such as environment, religious freedoms, accessibility and Indigenous people. Overlooking from the gallery were former attorney general, Jody Wilson-Raybould and the former president of the Treasury Board, Dr. Jane Philpott, as well as, the outspoken and former Liberal caucus member, Celina CaesarChavannes. It was rather ironic that these respected women were there applauding these young women who are being encouraged to speak up, just hours after they were ousted from the Liberal caucus for being principled and speaking their truth to power. Many of these young women later showed the Prime Minister what they thought of him for ejecting these former senior cabinet minister and denying them the opportunity to run as Liberals in the 2019 election. They turned their backs on him, while he attempted to rationalize about the importance of loyalty. Others walked out of the chamber when Conservative leader Andrew Scheer spoke to protest some of our policies. I would like to say, I do not have any problem with the divergence of opinion or disagreement they may have been trying to express in their actions. I do, however, have a problem with the lack of respect shown to the Prime Minister of Canada and the leader of the official opposition. Both these men were democratically elected to these high positions. Turning your back or walking out on these two leaders is the same as turning your back on the esteemed institutions and offices they represent. First and foremost, any aspiring political representatives must know that, while we state our disagreement on policies and certain actions, we cannot in the process disrespect the person or the position they hold. I learnt this great lesson early in my career from a valued colleague, Richard Marz, MLA, from Three Hills. It is my sincere hope that many young and impressive men and women like Brianna one day aspire to become leaders in our country. The in-depth discussion I was fortunate to have with her gave me great hope that in the not too distance future, she and other equally meritorious candidates will rightfully sit in the Parliament of Canada. County presents Recreation Agreement to city council By Lori Larsen
Camrose County administrator, Paul King, presented the County’s Recreation Agreement proposal to the City of Camrose council and administration that were present during the Committee of Whole meeting held April 1. King explained to council that after the City turned down the original proposal presented in January 2018, the County hired the services of consultant Larry Kirkpatrick with TSI Consulting services, to determine specifics on what the County should be proposing as their contribution to recreational services to the City of Camrose. The County and City have been operating under a “Percentage of Use” agreement since 2010, which expires in 2020. The present agreement is based solely on youth sport groups including hockey, skating, ball, soccer, aquatics, arts and the community centre and excludes the library, CDSS, fire and landfill, but does not account for village or town users. King indicated that the reasons behind changes to the Recreation Agreement were to reduce volatility and create certainty for both the County and the City, move away from a deficit funding model and provide transparency for ratepayers. “In the eight years that we (the County) have been involved with this, it has been up as high as $325,000 (annually) and back down to $275,000. In 2017 it was $263,000 and last year it was $374,000 and this year it is up to $482,000. That is a significant adjustment when you are looking at trying to create a budget.” King said the County examined five different funding models; per capita, equalized assessment, mill rate, percentage of use and annual grant and concluded, with the advice of Kirkpatrick and through comparison to other municipalities in the province, to pursue the mill rate (represents the amount per $1,000 of the assessed value of property) funding model. The County’s contribution is based on the City operating deficit 2018 as a baseline and the basis for making changes to the original proposal include the County having no interest in being involved in the operation of City recreational facilities, what is deemed fair and equitable to both the City and the County, the County’s ability to pay, the fact that the County is seeking a minimum 10 year agreement for consistency over a
long term, based on a fixed mill rate for the duration of the agreement with annual payments made following tax deadline. “Our proposal of 0.034 per cent is the largest total contribution to urbans (based on other comparable municipalitys’ recreation agreements) from Camrose to all our current partners totalling a little over $700,000 ($708,115) that includes $83.72 per resident the county will be giving to recreation total.”

We built our assessment number to the point where we can put aside $150,000 to $200,000 a year for those capital expenses, because you (City) aren’t the only ones that will have those capital expenses. “We just can’t keep going to the taxpayers and requesting money here and there, we need to do some

Hoveland said, “So that is a separate discussion.” King clarified, “The capital contribution to the aquatic centre and the City recreation agreement are currently tied together, with a motion that the rec. agreement is tied to that fund for the pool, and unless council changes their mind, that is currently what it is.” Mayor Norm Mayer asked for clarification. “So
what if we have to replace for example, boilers in the arena, can we come to the County for assistance on that or is that part of this operating plan?” King explained, “You can come to the County any time for capital contribution for council’s consideration.” Boyd asked King if the comparisons done to other communities (presented in the report) were looked at in detail regarding operations, maintenance and capital costs or were they done on a dollar to dollar basis and would the County be willing to share the findings of the consultant’s comparisons. King indicated the consultant did look at specific details in those communities and that there was not a report that the County would share. Mayer concluded that City council will wait to see the final details and then proceed from that point.

Building an airplane is a lot harder than restoring an automobile. But retirees Bob Huntingford and his brotherin-law John Brygadyr built a Velocity aircraft in their spare time at the Camrose Airport. “This came as a kit. You have to build everything and put it together with the exception of the wings, that are pre-built. The fuselage came as two pieces like two big boats and you put them together and join them all the way around,” explained Bob. He received the wings from the factory when another customer backed out on his purchase. “Otherwise, I would have had to build them myself as well. They gave me a really good deal on the pre-built wings. Normally, when you buy the fast-build kit (fuselage built, windows and doors put in and the wings are complete right out to paint) that is $13,000 more for the wings and another $9,000 for the fuselage to be done. You get nothing else in the kit. You have to buy the electrical, motor, tires and the rest of the parts,” he added. That begs the question of why someone would want to go through all that work and expense to build a plane?“My career involved flying all over the world. When I retired, I decided to get my pilot license. I retired at 58, but needed something to do. I thought this would keep me busy and out of the wife’s hair. I bought the kit not knowing how hard this was going to be. Had I known, I would have just bought an aircraft and carried on flying. I’ve had a lot of fun, but also it has been a pain,” shared Bob. “Right now I’m into about $150,000. I knew a gentleman that had the factory build one for him (from a foreign royal family where money was not an object) and it had everything including air conditioning and it was just over $400,000. It was the same make and model as this one. It is a plane that you would never get your money back on, similar to restoring an antique car that you can’t count all of your

hours of labour,” suggested Bob. So far, he has 4,700 hours of building into the plane. “Three days a week I come here to Camrose to work on it and I have a parttime job for three days a week to pay for this hobby,” Bob laughed. “I started Sept. 1, 2011 and spent five weeks at the factory learning how to work with fibreglass. It took me 18 months just applying the coats and sanding to get it smooth enough to fly. That is just to get the primer coat, I still have to paint it.” Inside the wings are light weight foam that are susceptible to high temperatures. The plane has to be white when completed to reflect any sun to keep the temperature down. Otherwise the foam would melt. “It is a 2014 model, because the year is assigned when it is registered.” Bob was attracted to the Velocity because it is unusual. It has a rear motor and seats two. “There are only 200 to 250 of these planes flying in the world. There have been more than 600 kits sold,
but people don’t realize how much work is involved and some don’t get built, or it takes a long time to finish. You have to be committed,” he suggested. After seven and a half years, the plane was pulled out and tested up and down the runway in Camrose. The next step is to get it inspected and cleared for takeoff. “Once the engine fires and brakes are working, then we have to go through many tests and inspections. Once it passes inspection you are allowed to fly within 25 miles of the airport. You have to put in 25 hours of safe flying before being cleared to leave that 25-mile radius, then apply to Transport Canada to remove the Special from your license and then you can fly anywhere in the world and carry passengers.” Bob is hoping to be flying in May and removing the special from his license in June. “I want to fly to the world’s largest fly-in, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin in late July. My goal is to have this ready to go to Wisconsin. That’s my goal,” said Bob.
The Edmonton builders came to Camrose because the hangar rent was less in Camrose. “In 2011, they were shutting down the Edmonton city centre airport. I needed a place to build and everyone was scrambling to find a place. One day I was out for a drive with my wife and we
stopped in Wetaskiwin. The person just happened to be the same person that gave me my license. He said a new hangar was being built in Camrose, go talk to this guy. I did and that is how we arrived in Camrose.”

This time of year offers more sun and warmer temperatures and it calls for a different strategy for car care. Ideally, you should inflate your tires to the maximum PSI rating (indicated on the sidewall). This will prevent the tires from developing flat spots. It is not necessary to remove modern radial tires and it is not advised to put a car up on blocks and leave the suspension hanging for an extended period of time. Tire pressure is especially important in the spring. As air temperatures get cooler during the winter, tire pressures decrease, which probably caused you to fill up your regular vehicle’s tires during the winter months. Having all of your tires at the same pressure is important. As air gets warmer again in the spring, tire pressures can increase. If the pressure increases past your manufacturer specification (because you added air during the winter), it can seriously affect your car’s handling and fuel economy. The first thing on your list is to perform a thorough check under the hood, to ensure your engine made it through the winter without problems. Prior to winter you should have changed the oil and filter and added grease. This oil is now old and should be changed at your earliest opportunity, even if you changed it just before storage. Don’t skip this step. Fresh oil is cheap insurance for the health of your engine. Examine belts and hoses to make sure the cold temperatures haven’t rendered them brittle. Check for wear. View the coolant to make sure it’s not too old, which can be an important factor for avoiding overheating as temperatures gradually climb as it goes from spring to summer.

Fish and game club present awards By Murray Green
The Camrose and District Fish and Game Association passed out several trophies at its annual banquet and awards night on March 23 at the Camrose Resort Casino. Chase Masson was the winner in the Youth Mule Deer category with his more than 161 inch entry. Orest Chromik had the top typical whitetail deer that measured just over 165 inches. The top mule deer award went to Tim Sand.
Derek These received an award for his cougar entry, while Cord These earned the top moose entry. The best elk award went to Sean Nichols. Tom Tomaszewski caught the largest walleye at 59 cm and Roy Cunningham netted the top whitefish at 58.5 cm. The event was the 25th annual fundraising banquet. Don Falk was the winner of the bamboo fly rod worth about $1,500.

Gunner Ralph Carlson
July 2, 1954 ~ April 4, 2019 Garry, an amazing husband, loving step-father and grandfather, caring brother, fun-loving uncle and loyal friend to many, was sadly taken with his loving wife by his side. Although his battle with cancer was short, he fought with courage and dignity and was selfless to the very end, always worrying about others, especially Marion. Garry was born on July 2, 1954 in Tofield, Alberta to Ted and Evelyn Law. He was the youngest of five children and grew up in the Round Hill area. After graduating from Grade 12, he moved to Edmonton with his buddies to get a taste of the big city life – then off to Williams Lake, BC, where he spent a number of years in the logging industry and helped his brother in construction. After a logging accident, his travels brought him back to Round Hill where he created his homestead. There, he developed his many talents from gardening, caring for the many birds, canning, woodworking and landscaping his yard. Garry had a love of many sports and NASCAR, but sitting around a campfire with his many friends and family, sharing lots of laughs, good music and a beverage here and there, was his all time favorite. He worked at Shaw Pipe for the last 28 years, where numerous friendships were made, better known as the “Shaw Pipe Family”. In the spring of 2000, he locked eyes with a blue-eyed lady named Marion. After that first kiss, which Garry was so thankful that was over, their relationship blossomed into a beautiful love story. They were married on October 4, 2002. Their adventures together were fun-loving and shared by many; leaving them all with great memories, laughter and love in their hearts. He will be forever in the hearts of his wife Marion FowlerLaw; stepson Bradley Willetts (Chelsi Dickhout) of Round Hill; grandchildren Lochlan Willetts and Zoey Willetts; special relationship with Wayne (Mel) Parkinson and their children Austin, Masen and Shaye; siblings Bob (Marion) Law of Round Hill and Loretta (Joe) Petryshen of Burns Lake; brothers-in-law Tom (Dana) Fowler of Leduc, Kirk Fowler of Grande Prairie and Albert Petryshen of Camrose; sisters-in-law Peggy (Murray) Lovell of Victoria, BC and Wanda Law of Bruce; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and his incredible circle of friends; as well as his baby girl pup Willow. Garry was predeceased by his parents Ted and Evelyn; mother and father-in-law Tommy and Merida; sister Olive Petryshen; and brother Stewart Law. A Funeral Service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 12, 2019 from the CityLights Church (4920-48 Street, Camrose) with Rev. Brian Hunter officiating. Inurnment has taken place in Bosman’s Memorial Garden, Round Hill. February 18, 1923 ~ March 29, 2019 Gunner was born February 18, 1923, the youngest child of Olivia and Carl Carlson in Bawlf, Alberta. He passed away peacefully on March 29, 2019 at the age of 96. Gunner grew up on the family farm north of Bawlf and attended Oak Park School. Gunner served his country as a soldier in WWII. On August 31, 1963, Gunner married Louise Noullett. Together, they raised three children on their family farm northeast of Bawlf. Gunner enjoyed everything. He curled, danced, played cards, raised cattle (which he preferred over grain farming) and loved spending time with family and friends. Gunner was, to say the least, a hard worker. Along with farming, Gunner enjoyed his second job: trucking. He loved to haul gravel and enjoyed relating the never-ending tales of being on the road. Gunner is survived by his daughters Rhonda (Norm) and Tanja; son Mark; along with grandchildren Ashley, Nathan, Jarret, Jayden and Lexi; and many nieces and nephews. Gunner was predeceased by his parents; wife Louise; siblings Alan, Elsie, Everett and Ethel; and granddaughter Jessica. A Memorial and time of fellowship and refreshment will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, April 22, 2019 from the Masonic Hall, 5021-48 Street, Camrose. Hans Espe August 7, 1932 ~ April 6, 2019 Hans Espe of Camrose, Alberta, passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at the age of 86 years. Hans was born on August 7, 1932 in Fort St. John, BC. He grew up on a farm in the Montney Valley just north of town. At the age of 14, he left home to attend Camrose Lutheran College in Camrose, Alberta. After graduation, he returned to Fort St. John and took a job at the Co-op store. While working there, he met and fell in love with a pretty bookkeeper from south of the Peace River. He and Kay Doonan were married in 1953. In 1956, they purchased the Montney General Store which they operated until they sold it and moved to Camrose in 1979. While in Montney, they raised two children, Larry was born in 1958 and Carol in 1963. Their son, Lorne Olaf, was Fort St. John’s 1960 New Year’s baby, but passed away a short four months later. Hans was a storekeeper who truly put his customers first. He offered credit and charged no interest. He drove customers home if they needed a ride and he opened after hours if someone asked. Hans was also a school bus driver and coached hockey and baseball. He was a director at the Credit Union and president of the Sons of Norway. He was also president of the local junior hockey team for a time. Hans was an unselfish husband, father and grandfather. He cherished time spent with family, especially his grandchildren: Cylas, Brittany, Kayla, Janelle and Makari. Hans lost his wife Kay to cancer in 2005. Hans remained active with the Sons of Norway, and he volunteered at Habitat for Humanity’s Restore. He continued to be active with Augustana University’s Alumni Association and he delivered Meals on Wheels up until a short time ago. He enjoyed singing with the Messiah Church Choir and the camaraderie of the Wednesday Work Group. Hans met the lovely Sylvia Engen at Messiah Lutheran Church. They were married in 2008 and enjoyed eleven years of love and companionship. Hans formed close bonds with Sylvia’s family. Left to cherish Hans’ memory are his wife Sylvia; children Larry Espe (Debbie Mah) and Carol (Mike) Twomey; stepchildren Judy Engen, Maureen Millang and Twyla (Yves) Lapointe; five grandchildren and six step-grandchildren; three greatgrandchildren, and ten step-great-grandchildren; and brother Thor (Cecile) Espe. Hans was predeceased by his first wife Katherine; infant son Lorne Olaf; and infant brother Dennis. A funeral service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2019 from Messiah Lutheran Church, 4810-50 Street, Camrose with Rev. Calvin Skriver officiating. A Peace Country Celebration of Life will take place at a later date and will coincide with the inurnment at the Montney Cemetery. Camrose Police were contacted by the loss prevention officer at a west end business after he observed a female concealing several cosmetic items in her purse and then attempt to leave the store. Police attended and the female
was arrested on the theft as well as outstanding warrants out of Medicine Hat. The female was charged with Theft and Possession of Stolen Property and issued an indefinite trespass notice not to return to the store. A female reported that
she believed her neighbour had stolen money from her residence. The investigation determined that the 61-year-old male had in fact stolen $1,800 from the complainant’s home. The male was charged with Theft and released on a promise to appear.

Police looking for Grand Prix April 9
A 2005 Chev Silverado stolen on Feb. 20 was located in the St. Paul area by RCMP. The ignition had been punched, but very little damage otherwise. Camrose Police received a complaint that a male had assaulted another male inside a residence. Police attended and arrested the offender who was located hiding in the basement. A female inside the
residence was also arrested on an outstanding warrant. The 30-year-old male was charged with assault and is waiting on a bail hearing. At 4:43 a.m. police received a call from a witness who observed a black Grand Prix sideswipe three parked vehicles on 47 Street in the 5300 block. Police are investigating and seeking public assistance in locating the vehicle.
