With the Christmas season winding up and the glint of New Year’s celebration in many eyes, residents are advised to be smart and stay safe whilst taking in festivities.

The following are a few suggestions on how to plan ahead when hosting a party.

Designate a legal driver to get guests home safe and sound. Providing nonalcoholic beverages for the designated driver (DD) allows them to enjoy the party as well.

Arrange for overnight accommodations and ensure where you have your party, has plenty of parking and make allowances for overnight parking.

Be that friend who takes away the keys but do so in a non-threatening, discreet manner. A sober friend will thank you when they wake up the next day, safe and sound.

Call for a safe ride home. If the cab is already called for and arrived, it is much easier to convince a friend to take the safe ride home.

If all else fails and a

person is insisting on driving, contact your local police. While it may be a difficult decision and a very last resort, it could very well save lives.

If you intend on going out on the town, or to a party, then plan ahead and arrange for a designated driver, cab or other safe ride home. Leave your vehicle at home.

Know your limits and stay within them. Your judgement is off when you over indulge with alcohol or cannabis and can make for regretful decisions. Never take a chance and drive if you have been drinking or using cannabis.

Drink plenty of water and eat off and on while drinking alcohol.

Stay physical. Participating in fun, safe games or dancing can help to burn off alcohol, not to mention calories.

Stay with the pack.

Remaining with and keeping an eye on friends will help ensure not only your own safety but your friends safety as well.

Cracking down

Along with this time of year and the partying and merriment, comes Alber-

ta checkstops. The police will be out conducting Alberta checkstops in an effort to detect and prevent impaired driving.

When approaching a checkstop, do so with caution ensuring you are totally aware of all other vehicles as well as officers’ presence on the roadways.

When approached by the officer, remain calm and polite–cooperation goes a long way in making the experience quick and easy.

Residents are reminded that as of Dec. 18, anyone operating a motor vehicle in Canada can be requested, by law, to provide a breath sample to a peace officer in a roadside screening for alcohol.

In accordance to Bill C-46, police have the authority to obtain a sample of a driver’s breath without having suspicion that the driver has alcohol in their system.

Toasting in the New Year is a long time tradition and one that can bring about joy and excitement, and doing so responsibly will help to ensure you will have the rest of 2019 to enjoy.

The happy in “Happy New Year”

In Canada, if you’re a teen-aged boy or a woman over 70, the odds are good you’re going to have a happy new year.

I’m not making that up.

Statistics Canada recently released a report on selfreported life satisfaction (or happiness). The two groups of Canadians who report being happiest—and by a wide margin compared to other age groups are teen-aged boys and women over 70. Go figure. As reported in Maclean’s, it makes sense that women over 70 are happy. If they’ve reached 70, they’re likely to be reasonably healthy. Assuming they have sufficient basic income, household income is not a big factor in older women’s life satisfaction (More money doesn’t make older people happier. However, poverty contributes to their unhappiness).

For women over 70, family and career responsibilities are lighter and freedom is greater than in their earlier years. Their life satisfaction is most affected by the friends, family and community relationships gathered over a lifetime. A strong sense of belonging and accomplishment has a big impact on how people feel about their life, and older women usually have those experiences. That all makes sense.

But even happier than women over 70, the happiest people in Canada are boys aged 15 to 19. Why is that?

Spring election

There is talk of an early spring election here in Alberta. Time sure has gone so very fast since the Alberta New Democratic Party was elected as our government.

There are many excuses which people give me for not voting. Some say that they do not know enough to pick a party. In the late summer 1935, a lack of knowledge did not stop the 80 plus per cent who showed up to vote the United Farmers out of office.

I would say it is a lack of interest, which stop most people from voting.

Others say there is not a lot of choice. We have at least 10 parties which are registered here in Alberta. We have the Alberta Advantage Party, Alberta Liberal Party, Alberta New Democratic Party, Alberta Party, Communist PartyAlberta, Freedom Conservative Party of Alberta, Green Party of Alberta, Pro-Life Alberta Political Association, Reform Party of Alberta and The United

Conservative Party. There is no excuse not to vote.

When our next election arrives, take the time to vote for someone in your area. Even if you decide to vote for a party who might not have a chance to get in. You will be surprised how much your vote does count in any election. By yourself, your vote means nothing. Together all your votes can change the world.

Boys in that age group are usually extremely healthy and have strong bonds with friends. However, they don’t have the kind of achievements and relationships that bring satisfaction to older women. As well, over the past 10 years, prospects for young men regarding both education and the job market have declined, while opportunities and the performance of young women have increased. So why are young men so happy? I laughed out loud when I read the explanation suggested by John Helliwell, a professor emeritus of economics at the University of British Columbia and a world-renowned happiness expert.

Helliwell suggests that “self delusion” might explain why young men are happy.

And young women? Their increased education and job market success in the past decade has been accompanied by greater anxiety and a dip in their life satisfaction.

Helliwell says, “Boys seem to be cool with how things are and aren’t bothered by their performance.” Maybe boys are happier than girls because they keep expectations low. I found my mind spinning off into speculations about that and then reined in my mind and kept reading… What about the happiness of people between 20 and 70?

For both males and females, life satisfaction tends to decline as they move into adulthood. A “U-shaped” happiness curve is typical. In mid-life, competing demands of family, career, mortgage and other obligations take their toll. A return to teen-age levels of happiness typically doesn’t happen until all the overlapping pressures begin to resolve in later life.

Helliwell’s happiness research has some clues for navigating those mid years (A friend once called them “that difficult stage between 30 and death” but he hadn’t experienced post-70 yet). Helliwell’s research indicates that, besides the twin pillars of good health and sufficient income, three big factors improve feelings of well-being: a congenial workplace, a stable neighbourhood and a happy marriage. So there you have it. ***

As you head into your happy new year, feel free to take those findings into consideration along with this wisdom from Mahatma Gandhi…

Augustana presents public session

On Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m., come out to hear visiting law professor Rebecca Probert as she explores the dramatic events behind Henry Cecil’s multiple marriages, at a free public event held in the Mayer room of the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Centre. Probert will draw on new archival material and research. Professor Probert will lead the audience to the truth, which is even stranger than the myths that have arisen.

In 1790, a wedding took place in a small Shropshire village between Sarah Hoggins, a local farmer’s

daughter, and the mysterious “John Jones”–who was in fact Henry Cecil, heir to the Earl of Exeter, and already married. How did this unlikely union come about? What happened to Henry’s first wife? What risks was Henry running by committing bigamy?

And was there a happy ending?

Probert is a professor of law at Exeter University in England. Ms. Probert will be in Camrose at the beginning of January, to share her fascinating research on marriage and family law.

As part of the Public Lecture Series, she will also join Katharine Bat-

lan, postdoc fellow with the Chester Ronning Centre, in a Ronning Centre Event, Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 2 p.m. in the Roger Epp Room of the Augustana Campus.

The topic of the event, Marriage Law in Britain and the US, will address British family law myths and will discuss religious responses to marriage law changes in the United States.

These events are sponsored by the University of Alberta Augustana Campus and the Chester Ronning Centre for the Study of Religion and Public Life.

The custom of making New Year’s resolutions is not a new one, it is said that over 4,000 years ago the Babylonians made New Year’s resolutions and held elaborate celebrations to honour the new year which, for them, occurred in midMarch.

Similarly, Romans symbolically looked backwards into the previous year and forward into the future, offering sacrifices to the deity and making promises of good conduct throughout the coming year.

For early Christians, the beginning of the new year meant contemplating one’s past mistakes and resolving to do better in the year moving forward.

Today resolutions have

moved away from promises to Gods or deities and are more secular based.

People make promises to themselves or loved ones to improve their lives, whether that be through physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual or occupational wellness.

Unfortunately, despite all good intentions, 2017 reports indicated that 80 per cent of those who set New Year’s resolutions, fell off the bandwagon by the second week of February and that the most popular resolution was to lose weight and eat healthier; however, only 9.2 per cent actually reported feeling success in their goals.

That shouldn’t stop you from trying though and in

an effort to help you succeed, here are a few tips.

Do it immediately.

Don’t hesitate, don’t wait for Monday. Start it now.

Create a support group or cheer squad. Challenges are always easier if you have someone in your corner cheering you on.

Don’t make unrealistic or unattainable goals.

If you do fall off the bandwagon don’t despair.

Look at it for exactly what it is, a bump in the road, don’t allow yourself to stay high centred. There are 365 days in a year, anyone of them can be the beginning of your new year.

Most importantly do it for you, not the kudos or approval of others, but because it means something to you.

Spend winter at Miquelon Lake

It’s a winter wonderland at Miquelon Lake.

Mild winter weather is creating the perfect conditions to get outdoors and enjoy some seasonal fun in Alberta’s provincial parks, this holiday season.

You could spend an afternoon of tobogganing with the children, cross-country skiing through a still winter forest, or skating on a frozen lake, winter activities are plentiful at parks throughout the province.

You can also combine skiing with exploring. Skijoring involves cross-country skiing with the help of one or more dogs. The

skier wears a skijoring harness and is connected with a rope to a dog wearing a sled dog harness.

The cross-country skier provides power with skis and poles and the dog adds additional power by running and pulling.

Skijoring is permitted on Beaver Hills, Chickadee, Deer, Ermine, Fox and Grouse Loop trails, as well as the Shoreline Path.

Winter activities such as ice fishing, disc golf, snowshoeing and camping can be discovered at AlbertaParks.ca. The website also includes trail reports to help visitors prepare for their adventure.

Snowshoe rentals are available through the Miquelon Park Centre from Monday to Friday. Phone 780-6782022 for rental reservations.

It is a short drive to Miquelon Lake Provincial Park to enjoy skating (ice rink is located near the park centre), or many of the other winter activities.

A provincial park or provincial recreation area exists within one hour’s drive of every Alberta community, so opportunity abounds to spend outdoor quality time with friends and family this winter season.

Radio announcer Larry Donohue has been entertaining country music fans in the Camrose area for the past 35 years. His last day at CFCW was on Dec. 21.

“Radio hooked me in my hometown of St. Catharines, Ontario in 1970 as an overnight DJ. Radio has taken me through Oakville, Ontario, Chilliwack, BC and finally to CFCW in May of 1984,” recalled Larry.

“My wife Beth deserves a medal of honour for 45 years. I have a daughter, Jennifer, who has two sons: Alex and Cameron. And I have a son, Adam, who is married to Laurie. They have twin girls: Emily and Elizabeth.

Larry was the music director and assistant program director at CFCW. “The assistant PD part means I do everything Jackie Rae (Greening)

doesn’t like to do and I walk her dog.”

He often did on-location broadcasts, commercial voice-overs, vacation fill in and much more.

“I enjoy all kinds of music, electronic gadgets, wine-making and cooking.”

Now that he is retired, he can spend more time with grandchildren and doing those things he loves to do.

“Playing at BVJ is special because it is the largest outdoor music festival that I grew up around. I remember singing on the homegrown stage. The first week of August was always blocked off to come here.

It is pretty amazing to be back and it is super when people know your songs and sing along. It just makes it that much more fun,” said Aaron.

As Aaron grew up, so did his talent as he moved from the family stage to the main stage at BVJ. One of the benefits of growing up in a small town is learning to make your own entertainment. For Goodvin, from Spirit River, that meant joining his fam-

At 12 years old, Aaron entered a singing contest at a local mall. Once he heard the crowd’s applause, he knew performing was what he wanted to do. He learned to play guitar and started writing his own material and by age 18, he was contributing songwriting cuts to other artists.

“It kept growing from there. I moved to Nashville eight years ago to write songs and I just wanted to be an artist. I really wanted to be the best at it,” he explained. “I wanted something of value to offer listeners, so I spent a lot of my life working on that.

Now it has come full circle. It’s really cool to come back to places like this.

My phone has lit up from old bar owners and people in the area who have welcomed me back. It is amazing, the support that I have had. The story they tell–it’s cool about knowing me from back then.”

Over the years, Aaron built a local reputation as a dynamic performer with a rock solid portfolio of songs. He began making trips to Nashville to test the waters in country music’s mecca. After signing with publishing powerhouse Warner Chappell Music, Aaron scored his first major-league contribution on the track “Out Like That” on Luke Bryan’s multi-platinum album Crash My Party.

“I spent a lot of years wanting to come to Camrose to the big stage. We have different types of shows now. I got the chance to play before Gord Bamford, in Camrose, earlier at the same venue. It is amazing to play your own songs to a crowd that is sitting there wanting to listen to you, such as the Lougheed Centre. At the festivals, you just go out and have a blast. At the intimate shows, you get more of a chance to show them (fans) who you are.”

This time, Aaron is the headliner at the Lougheed.

“It is amazing to see the progression. I knew I was on my way (to be a headliner), but it felt that it was coming up so fast. Some things in your career go really fast and other things seem to take forever. This is something I’ve been working on for 20 years.”

• Over the Christmas school break, the washrooms at the Bill Fowler Centre were vandalized several times between the hours of 4:30 and 7:00 pm. As a result, the washroom hours were reduced to 9:00 am to 4:00 pm weekdays and 10:00 am to 4:30 pm on weekends.

• Dr. Richard (Dick) Bibby opened Camrose Animal Clinic at 3843A-44 Avenue.

50 Years Ago This Week – from Dec. 31, 1968 edition • Two men from the Red Deer area were being sought by police, for a beating which took place at the downtown Camrose Edora Hotel.

• A message published by Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, Grant MacEwan, asked Canadians to play a bigger role in “Peace, Real Peace, the kind that springs from understanding and good will.”

• Residents living in the City of Camrose placed 10,460 local phone calls and 6,981 long distance calls on Dec. 24, 25 and 26.

Tom Eglauer was born November 18, 1941 in Lloydminster, SK, and passed away on December 21, 2018 after a courageous fight with cancer.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years Laura; children Brent (Barb), Vanita (Darrell), Armand, Len (Nancy); 6 grandchildren Megan, Colton, Noah, Alycia, Kendra and Derek; his brother Wayne (Rosemary). He was predeceased by his parents John and Mina, and his sister Anne.

After completing his education at SAIT, Tom continued farming on the home farm near Blackfoot. In 1968, Tom began his carpentry career, building homes for the grain managers of the Alberta Wheat Pool across Alberta.

Tom and Laura settled in Tofield in 1974, building a home and raising their family here. Tom was very well known and respected in the community. A carpenter by trade, he built countless homes in Tofield and area – all of which completed as if he were building for himself.

Tom was an avid curler and sports fan. He loved being in the outdoors – whether fishing on the lake or working on his fish pond in the backyard. He was an avid model train enthusiast, spending hours developing the track around the basement.

Most importantly, Tom loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a kind man who always had a joke at the ready.

A funeral Mass was held at 11:00 am, Friday, December 28, 2018 at the The House Church, 5830-51 Street, Tofield. Interment will follow at the Tofield Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Tofield and Area Health Foundation.

James Desmond Brady October 1, 1961 ~ December 21, 2018 James had a passion for life. He had many hobbies and talents, and as a Millwright Mechanic, he was truly a jack of all trades.

James volunteered for many organizations, including the Glendale Elks and the Alberta Snowmobile Association.

He won many awards over the years, including Snowmobile Family of the Year in 2008.

James loved camping, fishing and hunting. He also loved woodworking, and many family members have furniture pieces he had hand built. James loved music, and looked forward to attending Big Valley Jamboree every year.

James loved farming. He came home to the farm for several weeks each spring and fall to help put in the crops and harvest.

James had met his sweetheart Gail one and a half years ago and she brought a sparkle to his eyes. He was also very fond of her three children. Family was so important to James, and he talked often about his children, Alicia and Derrick, and nine grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his children Alicia Brady (Jeff Tessier) of Camrose, and Derrick (Darcie) Brady of Rosalind; girlfriend Gail Rosman; nine grandchildren; siblings Colleen Stephenson of Calgary, Dean (Mary Ann) Brady of Edberg, Karen (Gerry) Fankhanel of Ferintosh, and Darrin Brady of Vancouver; and parents Desmond and Corrine Brady.

James was predeceased by his son Craig.

Dennis John Gordeyko August 1, 1947 ~ December 24, 2018 Dennis passed away suddenly at home on December 24, 2018.

He is survived by his partner Mary Jean Stuart; daughter Denise Gordeyko (Mark) Peterson of Armena; son Keith Gordeyko (Katherine Cook) of Ohaton; brother Allan (Elouise) of Ohaton; and sister Bernice Gordeyko of Edmonton. Dennis also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close family and friends.

He was predeceased by his son Kevin, and parents John and Helen Gordeyko.

Dennis was a successful farmer in the Camrose area his entire life, running a large cattle operation for many years. His love of the Clydesdale horse breed was his passion. He raised and exhibited them throughout Canada and the USA – an exhibitor at the Royal Winter Show in Toronto and the World Clydesdale shows. The show circuit will miss his competitive showmanship. Dennis was also honoured as a national and international heavy horse judge for many years.

Happy New Year everyone

With some 60 pieces of legislation passed in 2018 it would take a while to list and elaborate on all of them but here are some of the highlights. We have and will continue to work hard everyday to ensure that Albertans will come out of the recession stronger than we have ever been.

“An Act to Combat Poverty and Fight for Albertans with Disabilities” is rooted in the belief that as Alberta is coming out of the worst recession in generations we will not leave people behind. It ensures AISH clients, seniors and low income Albertans will be able to afford basics by linking future benefits to the Consumer Price Index.

This will provide stability and more certainty for vulnerable Albertans.

“An Act to Protect Patients” will strengthen protection for patients from sexual abuse and sexual misconduct by regulated health professionals.

By implementing a “Big City Charter,” Calgary and Edmonton are getting new tools to give them more flexibility in how they manage growth on behalf of their residents. Amendments address such areas as expanding the use of off-site levies in new developments, managing their own debt limits and adjusting local improvement tax time frames. Programs for other urban and rural municipalities are also being worked on.

“An Act to Improve the Affordability and Accessibility of Post Secondary Education” will extend the tuition freeze for students and will add more students to postsecondary boards of governors.

The Alberta school curriculums are being updated and modernized to reflect our diverse cultures, understand the truth of residential schools, highlight Indigenous traditions, contributions, achievements and language. Provincial parks are being expanded to preserve the beauty and vitality of our natural areas.

New ambulances and more than 100 additional paramedics will help Albertans get faster emergency care and help alleviate pressures on emergency rooms and supports for front line workers.

More schools will get solar panels to reduce electricity costs and some schools will be getting new playgrounds. The Premier is looking at proposals for new Alberta oil refineries.

There are new provincial programs for communities to develop their own renewable energy projects and rebate support for residential solar panels.

There will be better supports for First Nations children with recent signing of the memorandum of understanding around the Jordan’s Principle of providing care for children. New legislation will focus on improving the child intervention system. After decades of negotiations, an agreement has been reached to settle the long standing Lubicon Lake Band land claim as well as treaty benefits for their members.

A new farm and ranch safety grant was launched to help eligible agriculture employers comply with new occupational health and safety requirements for workers.

These regulations were created and approved by some 28 provincial agriculture associations.

There was increased support to legal aid to ensure all Albertans have access to justice.

2018 was a good year in that no family farms were shut down due to OH + S rules changes; Alberta’s unemployment rate continues to decline as more people are working proving that neither raising minimum wages or having a carbon levy would kill the economy or jobs.

Amazon which is building a 600 employee facility in Nisku has raised minimum wages to $15 all across North America and The Canadian Chamber of Commerce has reported that carbon pricing has “not” had a negative impact on small businesses but is the right thing to do.

We have kept our promise to build 200 schools, but also reduced school fees, brought in school nutrition programs, reversed previous government cuts to educational funding and hired nearly 4,000 teachers and support workers.

Funding for more police officers, crown prosecutors, and court staff has proven successful in reducing rural crime rates.

Despite the negativity of naysayers and fearmongers 2018 has been a good year–promises are being kept, good governance, economic diversification, economic growth and consumer protection prevail. I wish to each of you a wonderful 2019 filled with good health, happiness and prosperity.

9 – Naomi Marie Neufeld arrived as the first baby of 2018 at Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital, Camrose on Jan. 2. She was brought into the world at 5:23 p.m. by Dr. Joseph Els. It is the first child for mom Miriam and dad Keith Neufeld of Bawlf.

Naomi was 3,140 grams (6 pounds, 15 ounces) and 48.5 centimetres in length.

16 – The City of Camrose reached out to the citizens requesting input on what citizens deem to be priorities within the next five years.

Residents were encouraged to fill out the 2018 Citizen Input survey by completing it in hard paper copy, available at any City facility.

16 – Two former Camrose Kodiaks’ players will be wearing a maple leaf on their jersey at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea, Feb. 14 to 24.

Forward Mason Raymond and defenceman Karl Stollery were named to the 25-man Canadian roster on Jan. 11.

23 – Team Carey of Calgary and Team De Cruz of Geneva, Switzerland won their first career curling Grand Slam titles at the Canadian Open in Camrose, Jan. 21.

Team Carey earned a decisive 10-5 victory over Team Englot (Winnipeg) to collect $30,000 of the $125,000 women’s purse and qualifies for the Champions Cup, the final Grand Slam event of the season.

23 – The 32nd Canadian Bull Congress promised to be the best show yet, according to Camrose Regional Exhibition board president Mark Schneider.

“We have maxed out for both exhibitors as well as producers and have folks on the waiting list. We are seeing many new exhibitors this year.”

30 – The Churchmice Players, who brought Mary Poppins and My Fair Lady to the stage,worked hard on their production of Jesus Christ Superstar. The rock opera is loosely based on the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and follows the last week of Jesus Christ’s life, but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.

30 – The Camrose and Area Animal Shelter Society happily settled into their new digs, an equipped building located at Bay 8, 4617-41 Street and had 55 cats/kittens safely and soundly taking up temporary residence.

February 6 – The Camrose Kodiaks scored three straight goals to edge the Sherwood Park Crusaders 3-2 on Jan. 30.

The line of Tyler Schendel, Colson Gengenbach and Colby Wolter was on fire as they each picked up a goal. Sherwood Park scored first, but less than three minutes later Schendel tied the contest. Goalie Luke Lush stopped 30 of 32 shots.

6 – Camrose Police Service launched Eyes on Camrose, a new community awareness program with the mandate of encouraging residents to keep a watchful eye on our community.

“The program is designed for each member of our community because we all play a part in ensuring that our families reside in a safe city,” said Camrose Police Service crime prevention/ community relations officer Constable Kelly Bauer.

6 – Multiple CCMA and CMA award winning country music legend, Gord Bamford just released his eighth studio album Neon Smoke recently and is on a 29-date Canadian tour, which stopped in Camrose on Feb. 21.

13 – On Jan. 26 and 27, libraries across Alberta and Canada encouraged people to read for 15 minutes in an effort to celebrate Family Literacy Day. Camrose Public Library joined the challenge with a goal to promote the importance of literacy and encourage families to read together.

13 – The Augustana Vikings men’s curling team competed for the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference championships at the Rose City Curling Club in Camrose, Feb. 16 to 18.

13 – Camrose Police Service crime prevention/ community relations Constable Kelly Bauer and Camrose COP organizer Dan Macpherson shake hands in a show of cooperation and support for the COP program.

20 – In an effort to assist people in preventing domestic violence and building healthy relationships, the Family Violence Action Society (FVAS),

under the umbrella of Camrose and District Support Services, offer a variety of individual and group services to children, adults and seniors.

6 – Cornerstone Christian Academy Society (CCA) and the Battle River School Division (BRSD) were at a crossroads.

Discussions regarding the future of Cornerstone Christian Academy, located in Kingman, stalled when the CCA asked for a judicial review. BRSD countered by insisting on not talking to the CCA because of advice they received from their lawyer.

13 – The Camrose Kodiaks were fired up in the first game of the Alberta Junior Hockey League playoffs on March 8. Local player Kyler Kupka scored twice to lead the Kodiaks to a 5-1 victory over the Calgary Mustangs.

13 – A $25,000 grant made to KidSport Camrose

by Ivari Insurance enabled at least 85 children in the community to participate in organized sports this year, who otherwise may not have been able.

The grant was part of the Healthy Steps Program designed to support help to teach skills.

6 – Camrose and area residents were advised that Phase Two of the 48 Avenue Bridge Replacement Project construction was ready to begin on March 5 and soon after, the bridge was closed to all pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

6 – The University of Alberta Augustana Campus held its 45th annual Community Awards Banquet in celebration of the generous givings. In the past year, 178 Augustana students were recipients of donor-funded student awards, scholarships and bursaries totalling over $273,000. The recipient of the 2017 Distinguished Alumni Award was Dr. Odell Olson who figured out his lot in life early, knowing from Grade 6 he wanted to be a rural doctor.

13 – The classic tale of Anastasia meant a little more to nine local dancers, due to the fact they were able to participate in the show.

Anastasia was the Russian Grand Duchess born to privilege, only to be cast out into a post-revolutionary world. The story is re-created through dance at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Centre.

20 – During the regular season, Hayden McIndoe and Bryton Morrow are teammates on the Camrose Vikings peewee hockey team.

But the two forwards were split up for the Alberta Winter Games in Fort McMurray, Feb. 16 to 19, and were on different teams.

20 – Augustana Vikings gave everything they had to knock off the NAIT Ooks in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference semifinals.

The Vikings lost a tough 4-3 contest in double overtime, which gave the Ooks the upper hand in the series on March 9. NAIT won 4-1 in the second game to capture the series and advance to the final against the MacEwan Griffins.

20 – Camrose County joined forces with a Commercial Vehicle Enforcement crew to conduct free farm truck inspections on March 28 and 29 at the east end Wildrose Co-op Cardlock bulk gas station.

County Protection Service officers began preparation for the annual Farm Truck Check, which is hosted by Camrose County every spring.

27 – The University of Alberta Augustana Campus held a public Vocal Arts Festival. Music voice majors from the studio of Harold Wiens, and Dr. Roger Admiral, piano, will present individual solo recitals.

27 – Camrose will be getting a new school. Funding in the provincial government’s budget will include the replacement of Chester Ronning School. “We have had more than five decades of service to students in the current Chester Ronning School and we are looking forward to a new, state of the art school in which to serve generations of students to come,” said Battle River School Division board chair Kendall Severson.

27 – If numbers speak volumes, then the Camrose Public Library (CPL) was being heard and used loud and clear. In 2017, 104,810 people visited the library in person, while 89,865 visited on-line.

April 3 – The Camrose Spirals Jump Rope Club hosted provincials at the University of Alberta Augustana on April 7 and 8. “Nine of the top teams from across Alberta will be competing on the first day. On the second day, individual events will be held,” said Spirals president, Crystal Rasmussen.

3 – The City of Camrose welcomed Dean Dereniuk as the new golf services supervisor and head golf professional. Dean, comes to Camrose from, most recently, Sylvan Lake, where he was the head pro for the Meadowlands Golf Club in Sylvan Lake, but he has deep roots in the Camrose area.

3 – Replacing Chester Ronning School in Camrose will offer students a stateof-the-art learning environment. The replacement school will be constructed on the west site of the existing building, ensuring that students have access to the same community neighbourhood resources and supports. Premier Rachel Notley greeted a future student, Dawn Howe.

10 – Hockey people across Canada are mourned the loss of 15 players, volunteers and staff of the Humboldt Broncos hockey team after a highway accident on April 6. The bus carrying the 29 team members collided at the intersection of Highway 35 and Highway 335 near Tisdale.

10 – The Camrose Swim Club voiced some concerns about the proposed revitalization project for the Camrose Aquatic Centre.

Representatives from the club, including executive member Gail Cunningham-Fleming, head coach Shane Gau and secretary Cathie McKenzie, spoke to council specifically about a complete shutdown of the pool in May 2018, as well as the proposed pool depth of the new lane facility.

17 – Bawlf area hockey player, Raice Szott knows where she is going to play a couple of years from now.

She agreed to attend and play hockey for Division 1 NCAA Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts starting in the 2020-21 school year.

The 16-year-old Grade 10 student played for the Red Deer Chiefs midget triple-A female team this past season.

17 – Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose staff members Brier O’Neill, Jen Schneider, Melissa Berg and other volunteers held a bake sale on April 12 to raise funds and pass on thoughts and prayers to all who have been affected by the Humboldt tragedy, including the families, emergency responders and health care providers.

17 – Caregivers, patients, family members, volunteers and health care professionals were invited to attend the annual Alberta Hospice Palliative Care Association (AHPCA) Roadshow, hosted by Hospice Society of Camrose and District, held on April 26. It was aimed at helping people fill their toolboxes with practical ideas to help them through this difficult time in life.

24 – Logan Boulet of the Humboldt Broncos took a tragic bus accident that killed 16 people into a positive. He filled out a donor card to donate his organs two weeks prior to the accident, that in turn saved six other lives. Camrose Registry will be holding an organ donation information session in order to save lives.

24 – John McDermott is a Scottish-Canadian tenor best known for his rendering of the songs “Danny Boy” and “Loch Lomond.”

15 – City of Camrose administration reported an update on the Camrose Aquatic Centre renovation and upgrade project and requested council provide direction specific to the timing and funding of this project. June 5 – Downtown Camrose welcomed new executive director, Bettyann Skagen, in mid-March of this year.

Skagen has extensive experience volunteering in the community and has made a career working in the non-profit sector where she focused on member relations and community building.

5 – Camrose Municipal Airport hosted a slew of people, pilots and planes at the 2018 annual Camrose Fly In Breakfast held at the airport.

Airport officials reported 116 arrivals, including four helicopters and two gyrocopters, during the Fly In Breakfast.

Planes in all shapes, sizes and colours descended into the Camrose Airport, each carefully guided by air traffic advisory and ground support personnel.

5 – Fiddle players from across western Canada were entered in the second annual Prairie West Fiddle Contest, June 8 and 9.

Competitors competed for prizes and a chance to participate in a grand concert.

12 – The Camrose Swans and Roses Leo Club took flight in March of 2017 and with 10 active members and close to 15 occasional volunteer members the club is ready and willing to be of service to Camrose and surrounding area.

Leo president Shelby Bianic said the club has already started doing events in and around Camrose and is anxious to do more fundraising for the community.

The all-around good athlete has put his crosstraining aside and wants to go as far as he can in baseball.

19 – The Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion celebrated its 90th anniversary as a Royal Canadian Legion Branch in Camrose. An open house was held on June 23 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the branch.

The Legion set up a few displays in the meeting room so people could view items and visit with veterans.

3 – At the University of Alberta Augustana Campus, Alberta Minister of Transportation Brian Mason announced the approval of the Rural Transportation Pilot Program, June 28.

The City of Camrose will be one of four projects, expected to be up and running this fall, which will receive a total of more than $1.4 million over two years as part of the program which is funded through the 2018 provincial budget.

24 – Jayla Kucy was at it again. The 12-yearold golfer from Camrose returned from Calgary with the Alberta Golf Ladies Amateur title at Willow Park Golf Course, July 9 to 11. She participated in the ladies’ event and placed in a tie for 21st overall. Jayla shot rounds of 81-78-77 for a total of 236 out of the total field of 61 women aged 12 to 69. They played white tees at 6,025 yards, so Jayla was keeping up to the ladies.

August 7 – The Camrose Wastewater Treatment Plant project hit what may be a costly snag, as a result of new design requirements now being mandated by the provincial government.

The original project for the upgrade to the WTP was budgeted for $40 million, but could now reach closer to $65 million.

14 – The dry, hot weather Camrose and area experienced caused very low flow in the Battle River, according to City of Camrose engineering services director, Jeremy Enarson; and subsequently the City kept a closer eye on Driedmeat Lake levels. “While the situation has not yet reached the level where the City would implement Stage 2 of the Water Shortage Response Plan (WRSP), the first stage where mandatory restrictions are imposed, administration has increased its monitoring of the lake level and river flows,” said Enarson.

The Connector runs Monday to Friday and includes three daily return trips, stopping at three locations in Camrose and four in Edmonton.

18 – Walking the 2018 Kick’n Country parade in high heeled red pumps may have been a challenging feat for some feet, but was a total success at creating awareness for children and women impacted by the long-standing effects of domestic violence and raising funds for the Camrose Women’s Shelter. The 2018 Walk raised $25,000 with 55 walkers taking to the parade for the cause.

18 – Brendan Lunty captured the Queen City Marathon for the ninth time since 2005. After placing ninth in the Edmonton Marathon, Camrose runner Brendan Lunty hit his peak this year at the Regina Marathon to win the event on Sept. 9.

18 – City of Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer and senior development officer, Colin MacPhee, officially open the Lions Centennial Park in downtown Camrose on Sept. 7. The City and Lions worked together to create a pocket park for people to enjoy in the downtown area.

December 4 – Jackie Lovely was named the United Conservative Party candidate for the next election. She will be running in the Camrose riding when an election is called, likely in the spring.

She was appointed after a Nov. 24 vote, when 1,048 people cast a ballot.

4 – After review by the City, of the intersections at 47 Avenue and 53 Street and 47 Avenue and 50 Street, it was determined that the intersection of 47 Avenue and 50 Street had issues regarding visibility and subsequent safety along 50 Street, due to parking on 50 Street and it was decided to expand the parking restrictions on the north and south sides of this intersection.

11 – Family, friends, neighbours and fellow members of the community came together for the sixth annual free Community Christmas Dinner, hosted by the Church of God on Dec. 22.

11 – City of Camrose council approved the 2019 operating budget during the regular council meeting held on Dec. 3, which will likely result in a 1.38 per cent increase to property taxes for 2019. The approved operating budget reflected no increases to water, wastewater, waste collection and recycling utility rates for 2019.

Camrose Police Service and volunteers from Camrose and District Victim Services organized another successful Checkstop, that saw a fairly steady flow of traffic coming through from noon until 4 p.m., with donations including food items, toys, personal items, gift cards and cash.

The New Year could not begin better for my wife, Darlene, and I, as in January 2019, we will welcome into our family our first grandchild. It has been such a joy to watch our daughter, Kristen, and her husband, Matthew, prepare for the arrival of their son or daughter. We cannot wait to hold and spoil this new little life that we are so blessed to be receiving.

As I have done for the last 18 years, I will balance this new family responsibility with the demands of serving our large rural riding. Since first being elected in 2000, I have never taken for granted the honour that has been bestowed on me to represent the good people of Battle River-Crowfoot.

I will do the same this New Year, as I have done every year since becoming a Member of Parliament, I will fight to have your voices heard, your questions answered, your many concerns addressed, and your problems cleared up. This, however, is becoming extremely difficult due to the Liberal government’s blatant neglect of Alberta and the many challenges we are facing.

On the very last day of Parliament sitting in 2018, I stood in the House and asked: “Mr. Speaker, last week DND officials accidently revealed in the Public Accounts Committee the transfer of the Aerospace Engineering Test Establishment from Cold Lake to Ottawa. Despite assertions to the contrary, neither the MP, MLA or mayor of Cold Lake were briefed on the impact of this move such as the loss of 50 high paying jobs, let alone consulted on this decision. This is just the latest in this government’s agenda to destroy Alberta every which way it can. Mr. Speaker, to the Minister of National Defence, why this attack on Alberta?”

I will continue to ask that question, as I will continue to ensure throughout 2019, the issues plaguing our great province are redressed and this includes getting the Trans Mountain pipeline completed, our oil flowing beyond our borders and our oil patch workers gainfully employed.

If the Liberal’s disdain does not dissipate over the next 10 months, we will fight with everything we have to ensure a Conservative government is restored to power in October 2019. It will only be under the leadership of Andrew Scheer and a team of Conservative cabinet ministers that Alberta will get the respect it so richly deserves. Only a Conservative government will restore the fiscal imbalance which is now projected to be $30 billion. This is despite Justin Trudeau’s promise during the 2015 election to balance the budget in 2019.

I will also be focusing on keeping Canadians safe, particularly those in rural areas who are experiencing a surge in property crimes. My Conservative colleagues and I will continue to fight for more secure borders and this includes withdrawing from the Global Compact on Migration to give Canadians the exclusive power to control who is permitted to enter and stay in our country.

We will push for lower taxes, a level playing field and more deregulation so Canadian companies can compete and investor confidence, especially that of foreign companies, is restored.

Truth be told, 2019 will not be much different than 2018, 2017 or 2016 in that we will, at least until October, remain the Loyal Official Opposition mandated to hold the Liberal government to account for their extensive list of failures and in doing so, protect the many varied interests of Canadians.

New employment standards for youth

The Government of Alberta is updating employment rules for youth aged 12 and under.

New standards only apply when there is an employment relationship, such as jobs where employers make mandatory deductions or provide benefits such as vacation pay. They do not apply to volunteer activities or casual work such as babysitting, lawnmowing, snow-shovelling, or farm and ranch work.

The changes mean that youth aged 12 and under will only be able to be employed in artistic endeavours such as film, stage or television productions, and only with parental/guardian consent and a government-issued permit.

The government consulted with more than 100 individuals and organizations including employers, parents, students, volunteer groups, worker support centres and farm representatives in its work to update the standards.

“By providing clarity on the standards for employing youth under age 13, the updated legislation will

ensure stronger protection for children, while still offering them the choice to gain valuable life experience through their first jobs,” said Christina Gray, minister of labour.

The changes complete the revisions to Alberta’s Employment Standards Code and Regulation that took effect last Jan. 1.

Employers must provide proper training and supervision for young employees and inform parents/guardians of any workplace risks.

The revised youth employment standards take effect Jan. 1, 2019.

Rules have not changed for youth aged 13 and up.

Youth aged 13 and 14 can be employed in such jobs as a store clerk, server, delivery person, dishwasher and food assembler, or in other jobs with a permit and parental consent.

Youth aged 15 to 17 can be employed in most occupations, however, certain requirements for supervision and restrictions on hours of work apply.

Youth employment rules do not apply to farms, ranches, babysitting, lawnmowing or snow-shovelling.
