Churchmice Players Community Theatre presents the timeless Jesus Christ Superstar musical

by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.

The rock opera is loosely based on the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and follows the last week of Jesus Christ’s life, but is seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. The story explores the personal relationships and struggles between Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, his disciples, his followers and the Roman Empire. The apostle Judas expresses his concern over Jesus’s rising popularity as a king and the negative repercussions that it will have. He strongly criticizes Jesus for accepting his followers’ unrealistic views, and for not heeding his concerns.

The nine performances will be held at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. See details in the ad on page 15.

Jaywalkers’ extended to three days

This year’s Jaywalkers’ Jamboree will offer people longer hours on Saturday and Sunday to take in the festivities and enjoy the excitement.

As a result of requests to extend Jaywalkers’ Jamboree hours, the Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce conducted a survey with Chamber members to determine interest.

“We put surveys in with our Chamber members’ invoices which gets probably 95 per cent of people on Main Street who participate in Jaywalkers’,” said Chamber executive director Sharon Anderson.

Anderson indicated that almost 95 per cent of the responses to the survey were in favour of extending Jaywalkers’ hours. “They were all good comments,” noted Anderson, adding that out of all the responses they received back, only two chamber members indicated they would not be able to have staffing to open on Sunday. “Everybody else who responded said they are excited and that it is about time.

“The results of the downtown survey prove that businesses want Jaywalkers’ to continue to be held on 50th Street,” added Anderson.

The City has approved, Jaywalkers’ 2018 to run Friday, June 1 until Sunday, June 3.

This year’s event schedule will begin on Friday, June 1 with breakfast from 7 until 9 a.m., vendors’ hours from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. and West Coast Amusement’s rides running from 9:30 a.m. until 11 p.m. On Saturday, June 2, the breakfast will run from 7:30 until 9:30 a.m., vendors’ hours from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. and West Coast Amusement’s rides from 9:30 a.m. until 11 p.m. On Sunday, June 3, there will be no breakfast and the vendors and West Coast Amusements’ rides will run from noon until 6 p.m.

Anderson said that while the Chamber is not sure if all vendors will participate in the extended hours, they are encouraging them to do so.

“Vendors will be given notice to let them know about the extended hours and encourage them to participate for the longer hours. We aren’t charging extra for booth space on Sunday this year,” said Anderson.

Chamber board director Tony Metivier added, “It is one more way for Camrose to set the stage.

It brings more people back into Camrose and is good for tourism.”

The Chamber hopes the extended Jaywalkers’ hours will afford more people an opportunity to take advantage of the shopping, fun and excitement of the event.

“Out-of-town people or people who work and may not be able to make it Friday or Saturday will have an opportunity to come out Sunday now,” commented Anderson.

The Chamber and board are busy preparing for the event and recognize that extending the hours means more work to plan entertainment and activities and are toying with some new ideas for the now three-day event.

“We have never had entertainment on Sunday,” said Anderson, “So we will be seeking stage sponsorship to offset the entertainment costs. We will continue the tradition of having something to do for everyone.”

Metivier remarked on how much the crowds at Jaywalkers’ have come to appreciate the free events.

“There are always crowds at the stages in the bleachers sitting there during the free events.”

Her anxiety began in childhood, probably because she did understand what was happening in her environment. Her ways to cope with anxiety also began in childhood–among other ways, becoming exceedingly competent, fine-tuning her inner strength and discernment, and myriad ways to try to dull the anxiety. As an adult she’s experienced more personal tragedies than most of us. In that context, anxiety and depression are not surprising. But knowing the source of debilitating challenges doesn’t make them go away. Knowing the source provides information but no cure. ***

The back story. A cherished friend has spoken, in recent years, of feeling anxious and depressed for most of her adult life.

To the outer world this would be a surprise. To me it was a surprise when she began to speak of it a few years ago.

She’s hugely accomplished and competent, with absolute integrity, a wicked sense of humour, and a depth of wisdom greater than most people. After many years of marriage, she and her husband still adore each other–not in a fling-it-around way, but in that deep and quiet (with moments of electricity) way of those who are long-term friends as well as lovers. She frequently speaks with gratitude for the blessings in her life.

All of that is true. And it is also true that for many decades, most of her waking moments were consumed with allpervasive crushing anxiety, and most years included at least a few months of energy-sucking depression. Recently she said, “Depression is easier than anxiety. In fact, depression is one way to dull the anxiety.” When she said that, I could feel parts of my brain rearranging themselves. I never thought of depression as a “treatment.” ***

She had to think for a while. She cast her mind back days and weeks. Months and months. Actually, she realized, it was almost a year since she could remember feeling anxious. And she hadn’t even noticed. Stunning.

Fast forward. In the past few years, she’s experienced huge life changes including retirement. In the past year, she’s faced multiple life-threatening medical emergencies. The odds of survival were miniscule. One of the medical challenges culminated in an organ transplant within days of when she would have died.

During all the time (now nearly a year) since she’s had one genuinely life-threatening experience after another, she did not feel anxious.

She knew she might die. She has a medical background and understood more than most people the meaning of all those tests. She knew that the odds of her dying were much greater than the odds of her living. She knew that if she lived, she might be profoundly incapacitated for whatever lifetime she had left.

She hoped she wouldn’t die or be profoundly incapacitated–primarily out of concern for how that would impact her husband. But she cannot remember a moment of anxiety. Not one moment.

As part of the post-surgery recovery process, she was offered the opportunity to meet with a psychiatrist. Until the psychiatrist asked her, “When was the last time you felt anxious?” she had not even noticed that her lifetime companion– anxiety–had departed.

Throughout the months of life-threatening experiences, she was calm.

And she still is. Plus, she’s healthier and happier than she has been for a very long time. Stunning. ***

She doesn’t know quite what to make of this, though she’s amazed and grateful. I don’t know what to make of it either. But this much I know. Just knowing her, being privileged to hear her story, makes me feel grateful and hopeful.

My takeaway: Long-term intractable seemingly-hopeless challenges–like relentless anxiety–can disappear. My bigger takeaway from the first takeaway: In ways we cannot understand or even imagine, there’s hope for each of us. That means there’s hope for the human race and hope for the planet! ***

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster University of Alberta Augustana Residence Life Staff hosted an afternoon filled with fun at the annual Rocky Road Ice Cream Carnival held on Jan. 28 in the Augustana gymnasium. Five-year-old Raven Kading showed no fear climbing up the rock wall.

The obstacle course at the Augustana Rocky Road Ice Cream Carnival had six-year-old Luka Wallace-Meyer jumping and rolling.

50 Years Ago This Week – from Feb. 6, 1968 edition • Schnell & Barrie Ltd. advertised their FREE (Rosebud) Pancake Day, Thursday, February 15, 10:30 am to 4:30 pm.

• Camrose Hardware Ltd. offered the new Proctor Silex Iron, with steam, spray and dry feature for $22.88.

• Gent’s Car Club invited all drivers, sponsors and fans to attend a meeting on February 7, to go over rules and regulations for the summer season of racing.

Drug issue

Gail Schulte, if you are concerned about the negative effects of drugs on young people, legalization of marijuana is absolutely the right thing to do. For as long as I’ve been alive marijuana has been illegal and that hasn’t stopped people from using it and organized crime from selling it. It makes absolutely no sense to continue to do what has been proven to not work.

Gail, you believe that there will be an increase in marijuana use following legalization, but the evidence just doesn’t support that.

Where marijuana use has been legalized its use stays about the same or drops. In the 1980s and 1990s, Portugal had a huge problem with drug abuse. Portugal decriminalized marijuana in 2001 and its use dropped.

According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and

Crime, over a year about 12.7 per cent of Canadians use marijuana. In Portugal, the number is 3.3 per cent.

According to extensive data collected by the US National Survey on Drug Use and Health, marijuana use has not increased in the states where it has been legalized, but in Colorado since legalization, use among teenagers has dropped sharply to its lowest level since 2007-08.

Clearly, our goal is to reduce use of marijuana and other drugs. The problem we have now is that in or near every school, there is a representative of organized crime encouraging kids to try marijuana. Once kids get into the habit of using marijuana, the dealer tries to move them to harder drugs. To speed the process, organized crime is lacing the marijuana with an opioid so that by using marijuana, the kids are getting addicted to something much more dangerous.

We won’t have success against drugs unless we cut the legs out from under organized crime. Every bit of marijuana that will be bought in a store is marijuana not bought from organized crime and that is a step in the right direction.

By purchasing marijuana in a legitimate shop, customers will not be encour-

aged to try a more addictive drug, and the marijuana will not have a more dangerous drug added to it.

There is no doubt that the legalization of marijuana is bringing challenges.

No one likes the uncertainty of change. But it makes no sense to continue doing what has been proven to not work. There is every reason to hope that the legalization of marijuana can reduce organized crime and move young people away from dangerous drugs. It will not solve all drug problems, but it’s a step.

Rob Hill, Camrose Pipeline solution

To make up for the insult Albertans felt from his father, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should not approve the Trans Mountain bitumen pipeline to BC, but help build refineries in Alberta to ship cleaner product.

Alberta would get jobs and revenue, Kinder Morgan still gets business and praise for a cleaner pipeline, and BC keeps its coast safe and welcome to Albertans.

Oil multinationals would save the cost of upgrades to their refineries outside Canada.

The real national interest is not to send jobs overseas but create them here.

Beverly Smith ~ A Memorial It was all in those eyes, those big brown eyes, It was in her smile and giggle It was in her laugh and in her style, and it used to be in her wiggle.

It was in her scarves and in her boots, And in her glasses and purses, And in the twilight of her life right up to the end, It was in her doctors and nurses.

Several weeks passed, she was stable enough It was time to seek long-term care, He couldn’t keep her alone anymore So now the question was “Where?”

As a young girl, she left her mark, Wherever she went she ignited a spark, From a cute little blonde, she blossomed and grew, Her lust for life kept shining through.

She didn’t want to stay in Camrose As a burden to The Bethany Group, After all, “I worked there myself for awhile, I don’t want my name in the loop.”

She loved the glitz, she loved the glam, She carried it well, she was a ham!

She’d pose for a painting, and if you wanted a picture, She’d touch up her lipstick and add to the glitter.

So he found her a place in Wetaskiwin long-term, But a little too far for the driving, She missed her daily visits from those whom she loved So he started all over conniving.

She worked at the airport in cargo and freight, Moved to Calgary and got married, Then on to Florida and eventually Las Vegas, But life turned unhappy and harried.

He convinced her again that Camrose was best, They welcomed her at Bethany Meadows, Maple Cottage became her final resting place And her own home was so very close.

She left that phase of her life behind And returned to Camrose alone, In a few short years, she got a little house And started all over again.

Steve took her home on some weekends if able To let her rest in her chair, He bathed her and fed her and even did makeup And colored the roots of her hair.

It came by chance that she met a new man Who would lovingly carry her through A new life of love with a terrible disease, It was happy and sad, but true.

He drove her around and got her nails done Her fingers and even her toes, Then off to the bakery in Sherwood Park For cinnamon buns, that’s how he rolls!

She would proudly introduce him as her ‘Big Hungarian’ Stevie, Then giggle with glee, Their eight years together is a ‘love story’ to last, It’s amazing and hard to believe.

We all were there with her when she took her last breath The morning of January 24, We cried and we held her, it was a relief, Her suffering was finally over.

Very few men can ever show love The way Stevie did, but somehow, He did everything for her, gave her his all, Anytime, anyplace, anyhow.

She wanted no service, no burial plot Just remembrance from those who loved her, She’ll never forget her best friend Stevie For his love, and for taking care of her.

The stories she told were larger than life We listened and hoped to hear more, But her illness made it difficult to speak And it wore on her and it wore.

We extend our sympathy to Steve and Bev’s loved ones We feel your pain and your sorrow, We’ll cry and we’ll grieve and we’ll pray in the hope Of a healthier and brighter tomorrow.

In solitude, we think of our very own lives And we talk about it, no doubt, Why some of us get to live longer than others, Only God has it all figured out.

We all loved Bev in our own different ways, Some of us longer than others, But it’s not how long we get to have love, It’s how deep we love that matters.

The last five years took its toll Her body weakened and failed, But Stevie stayed strong and he faced it all And helped her to cope and prevail.

One day, while at home, she fell in her tub A broken rib punctured her lung, It’s as if her disease wasn’t burden enough Now perhaps her last song was sung.

She bore the anguish and he shared her pain The doctors tried new ways to treat her, He agreed to let them send her away “Or this condition will now surely beat her.”

They called for the STARS helicopter on August 23rd, “We’ve tried everything, she needs better care,” He signed her release and called us to see her Fly away ‘on a wing and a prayer’.

The helicopter crew and Royal Alex ICU Were incredible, they saved her, no doubt, Steve couldn’t believe the difference they made “But it’ll take days before she gets out.”

After a week, she was back in St. Mary’s And walking the hallways with help, From her ‘Big Hungarian’ who wouldn’t let her quit, She loved him in spite of herself.

The City of Camrose is looking for a dynamic, proven leader to fill the role of Director of Public Works. Reporting to the City Manager, the Director of Public Works is responsible for executing the Public Works department’s vision and mandate through leadership of all aspects of Public Works services and infrastructure maintenance, including water, sewer, drainage, fleet and roads services.

• Experience with managing organizational change initiatives, and determining and setting goals and priorities based on organizational mandates and initiatives.

• Experience in the preparation, management and execution of operational and capital budgets and strategic plans.

• Demonstrated decision-making and problem solving skills.

• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of people, including senior management, private and public officials, business and community leaders, advisory boards, union officials, staff and the general public.

• Fully experienced in the use of MS Office with advanced computer skills.

• The successful candidate will be required to produce a satisfactory Driver’s Abstract and Police Information Check.

HOURS OF WORK: Hours of work are generally 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Management duties will require work outside of the core hours as part of this role.

Multiple CCMA and CMA award winning country music legend, Gord Bamford just released his eighth studio album Neon Smoke recently and is going on a 29-date Canadian tour, which stops in Camrose on Feb. 21.

He will be performing both his classics and music from the new album beginning at 8 p.m. at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre.

“My new album, I would say, is not much different than what I usually do. I try to stick with what I am good at and write songs and record songs that people can relate to. I feel this album is my best yet, however, once you complete your records, it’s all up to the fans after that to see how it does,” said Gord, who is no stranger to Camrose.

“I grew up in Lacombe and we are now building a house at Pelican View Estates on Buffalo Lake. We spent the last couple of years in Nashville, so it’s great to be back in Alberta. I have been coming to Camrose since I was a kid, my son is now playing hockey there with the Camrose Red Wings bantam triple-A team as well. It’s a great community and we look forward to being involved in it for years to come,” said an excited Gord.

He has a deep history of creating the songs that country music fans want to hear.

As one of the most decorated artists in Canadian country music, Neon Smoke continues

down the path of prolific song writing.

The albums debut single, 2017’s summer anthem “Livin’ On Summertime” broke the Top 10 on the Canadian Country music charts. The follow up single “Ain’t It Grand” featured Gord joining Blue Rodeo’s charismatic front man Jim Cuddy to duet on a catchy, fun and ultra-Canadian gem. “Ain’t it Grand” debuted at the 2017 CCMA Awards in Saskatoon.

Gord has played at Big Valley Jamboree in Camrose during the summer in front of 30,000 people. Here, he will be in an intimate setting with 600 people.

“Big Valley Jamboree is probably one of the best and largest festivals in Canada and it’s always a pleasure and a privilege to be able to play there. I enjoy all types of shows, but I am partial to small community halls and theatres. The up-front and personal connection you can make with your fans is what I love the most,” shared Gord.

After his Canadian tour, He will be heading to Australia for a string of shows.

Breakout artist Aaron Goodvin, also a Big Valley Jamboree performer, will open for Gord.

Over the years, Gord has had a lot of support from Albertans. “Alberta is home for us and always will be.

It’s full of great opportunities.

I grew up around farming and community, so I think that’s been a big part of my success.”

Dance band Emeralds return

The Emeralds Show and Dance Band are back to entertain you at the Norsemen Inn on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 8 p.m.

Over the years, The Emeralds have recorded 29 albums and received six gold, two platinum and a double platinum award. In 1997, The Emeralds were inducted into the City of Edmonton’s Cultural Hall of Fame. The Emeralds are internationally acclaimed gold and platinum recipients.

Although they have hundreds of songs in their playbook, they are known around the world through international hit “The Bird Dance.”

Allan Broder plays the tenor saxophone, sings vocals and is the band manager. He is the founding member. Since the formation of the band in 1970, the group has surpassed their wildest expectations.

Wallis Petruk plays the tenor saxophone, violin, flute, clarinet, vocals and is the director. He has performed with the orchestras of Bob Hope, Mel Torme, Della Reese, Wayne Newton, Eartha Kitt, Mart Kenny and Tommy Banks. He has also performed with The Rebels, The Nomads and The University of Alberta Symphony and String Ensemble.

Don Remeika plays drums and sings vocals. He has been in the Canadian music industry for 41 years, 30 of which have been with The Emeralds.

Before joining The Emeralds, Don played with such well-known groups as Wes Dakus and the Rebels, The Nomads, Umbra, The Elastic Band, and Frank and Hank Rogers.

Terry Kole plays lead and rhythm guitar, banjo and sings vocals. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, he played rock instrumentals with The Ventures, The Fireballs, The Shadows and Edmonton’s own Bob Clark.

Reiner Piehl plays the keyboards, bass and sings vocals. He plays a variety of instruments–a list that’s grown to include keyboard, saxophone, clarinet, flute, bass guitar, and guitar.

The Emeralds are no strangers to Camrose as they have played here on many occasions. There will be a late lunch and a ring raffle during the evening.

The Battle River Big Band will be bringing the Latin jazz, show and dance sounds to the Bailey Theatre stage on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 8 p.m.

This 18 to 20 piece Battle River Big Band will be staying with the romantic traditions of St. Valentine theme, the band will play a variety of sensuous Latin American classic dance tunes.

It is a great way to celebrate the love and romance of this special occasion and to revisit the era of the big band sound. Snacks and refreshments will be available during the evening.

The Battle River Big Band is comprised of regional musicians, many of whom are local music teachers. Artistic director Dennis Rusinak, together with the band, not only wanted to feature passionate Latin American rhythms, but will pay tribute to some popular pop and swing tunes.

The band will dip into the song libraries of Stevie Wonder and Michael Buble, as well as the Latin spirits of Tito Puente and Antonio Carlos Jobim. This evening will encompass a complete big band sound of reeds, brass, strings and percussion selections and solos complete with the vocal renditions of Deanna Didriksen and Javier Castillo Velasco.

Report to the C Message from Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital As we embark on 2018, Covenant Health and St. Mary’s Hospital are preparing to celebrate the 10th anniversary of coming together as an organization: rejoicing many voices with one Mission.

On October 7, 2008, 16 Catholic health care facilities organized under the leadership of our current CEO, Patrick Dumelie to form Covenant Health. The facilities included Bonnyville Health Centre, St. Mary’s Hospital, Killiam Health Centre, St. Joseph’s Hospital - Vegreville, Mary Immaculate Care Centre - Mundare, Our Lady of the Rosary Hospital - Castor, St. Mary’s Health Centre - Trochu, Grey Nuns Community Hospital, Misericordia Community Hospital, Villa Caritas, Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre, Youville Home, St. Joseph’s Auxillary Hospital, Banff Mineral Springs Hospital and three in Lethbridge: St. Therese Villa, St. Martha’s House and St. Michael’s Health Centre. Covenant Health has grown and currently operates 17 facilities in Alberta.

Due to the generosity of St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation Board, our community will see a $1 million redevelopment of the emergency department non-patient area. The renovation project began mid-October. In order to avoid excessive disruption with patient flow and care we have subdivided the construction project into four phases. The emergency department will remain open during the entire renovation; however at times patients may experience longer wait times. The renovation is planned to be completed in the summer of 2018.

Path to Home is a care model that was implemented at St. Mary’s Hospital one year ago. Path to Home is designed to better prepare patients and families with a smooth, coordinated transition from hospital back to the community.

Path to Home phase two was introduced at St. Mary’s Hospital in February and is intended to foster conversation on collaborative practice and ensure that we are focused on quality and safety.

Path to Home phase two involves: • Weekly care huddles • Collaborative care leadership • Collaborative orientation to staff • Quality care whiteboards and dashboards St. Mary’s Diagnostic Imaging Computed Tomography staff are so excited to have received the Siemens 128 slice CT scanner. The improved functionality and capabilities of this new technology is an exciting improvement to the CT services offered at our site. The increased speed of the scan makes CT scans efficient for the technicians and decreases wait times for patients.

The new CT scanner has been operational since November 27, 2017.

Diagnostic Imaging ultrasound staff are grateful for the two new ultrasound unit upgrades given to the department. A third ultrasound machine will be delivered in the new year. The equipment itself is ergonomic and easy to use. This new technology has drastically changed the imaging capabilities of the department since receiving the two units in December 2017.

St. Mary’s Hospital announced the launch of our weekly Music Care program in October 2017. This program was made possible due to a partnership between talented Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute student musicians who volunteer and our volunteer coordinator.

St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation funded the musical instruments so that the patients can play along to the songs by beating on a drum, striking a tambourine or simply singing along. The program is currently running once a month in our chapel. Our hope is that we will be able to expand the volunteer base to offer the program weekly.

The program is gaining popularity especially with our patients who are waiting for an alternate level of care placement.

Our obstetric team has had a very busy year and is excited to announce that Shunda Construction has been awarded the construction contract for a third labour and delivery suite. The construction will commence in 2018 and will not interfere with our daily operations.

Accreditation is a process that helps our organization meet the challenges of the future. In October 2017, accreditation focused on long term care, supportive living and hospice/palliative care. The results of the survey indicated that Covenant Health met 95% compliance with the required operational practices in the Accreditation Standards document. Surveyors did not visit St. Mary’s Hospital this year; however, they highlighted Covenant Health as an organization that goes beyond the requirements of the Qmentum Accreditation program by attaining accreditation with Exemplary standing. This year, the surveyors recognized the commendable efforts of our volunteers and noted how they are appreciated by our staff, patients, residents and families throughout Covenant Health facilities.

Dr. Chris Nichol was the successful recipient of the 2017 Rural Physician Award of Distinction. This award was created by the Alberta Rural Health Professional Action Plan in 2002 to recognize the contributions of rural physicians for their outstanding contributions to medical services and practice in their communities. Dr. Nichol was acknowledged for his clinical leadership, continued support of medical education, committee work to improve stroke services across Alberta and the creation of the primary stroke centre at St. Mary’s Hospital. Dr. Nichol contributes his time to coordinating the emergency service care at Big Valley Jamboree each year during the Civic holiday weekend. Each year the EMS HOSPITAL EXPENDITURES $39M team lead by Dr. Nichol improves the emergency care HOSPITAL EXPENDITURES $39M at the BVJ site. Claim your medical expenses

You may be able to reduce the amount of federal tax paid by claiming a non-refundable tax credit on a wide variety of medical expenses.

Examine the possibility to claim medical expenses for yourself, your spouse or common-law partner, your dependent children (under 18 years of age) and certain other dependants.

To claim medical expenses, the expenses must be eligible–the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has a list of common medical expenses that may qualify have been paid by you or your spouse or commonlaw partner; have been paid within a 12-month period

ending in 2017 and not claimed for 2016.

Before preparing your taxes, make sure you are claiming eligible medical expenses. If you claim expenses that are not eligible (for example, athletic or fitness club fees or overthe-counter medications), the CRA may change your return accordingly.

If you travel at least 40 kilometres (one way) from your home to get medical services that were not available in your area? If so, you may be able to claim the public transportation (for example, taxi, bus, or train) expenses you paid. Where public transportation is not readily available, you may be able to claim vehicle expenses instead.

If you travel at least 80 kilometres (one way) from your home to get medical services not available in your area you may be able to claim accommodation, meal and parking expenses in addition to your transportation expenses.

You may be able to claim a caregiver’s transportation and travel expenses. To make that claim, a medical practitioner must certify in writing that you were not capable of travelling alone to get medical services.

If you have low employment or self-employment income and high medical expenses, you may be able to claim the refundable medical expense supplement, a refundable tax credit of up to $1,203.

This year, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will open its e-filing the latest it has ever opened since its introduction in the early ‘90s, meaning Canadians will have a shorter window of time to file their taxes.

What was previously an 11-week time span has been reduced to nine weeks, with the deadline to obtain and sort financial documents still set for April 30.

“We’re seeing the CRA open their online portal to accept returns happening slightly later each year, which puts added pressure on Canadians to get organized and file on time,” said Lisa Gittens, H&R Block senior tax professional.

“And even though we cannot file your return before Feb. 26, we can still estimate how much you will be getting back and give

you your refund in advance through our H&R Block Instant Refund program.”

Lisa also offers some considerations for Canadians as they prepare to file their taxes.

There are changes to the children’s arts and fitness credit, transit credits and education tax credit that could heavily impact your tax refund.

The filing deadline for people with business income is June 15. How-

ever, if they owe money, they will still be charged interest from April 30, but will not be assessed a latefiling penalty.

You have options when filing your taxes, both online and with a tax professional, however, not everyone is a tax expert.

Ensuring you work with the most intuitive system or knowledgeable tax expert will be your best bet at obtaining the refund you’re owed.

Finance long-term care needs Metro

Failing to plan for longterm care expenses may leave aging men and women with little or no assets late in life. AARP says that the cost of long-term care continues to rise and the array of options can make it difficult for families to find the best, most affordable care.

The median monthly costs for a semi-private room in a U.S. nursing facility hovered around $6,800 in 2016, according to The Genworth Cost of Care Survey. That adds up to roughly $82,000 per year. Individuals who only anticipate hiring a home health aide should know that such options cost an average $3,800 per month.

Retirement savings can quickly dry up when longterm care is required. Individuals need to keep in mind that, in 2014, the Social Security Administration said the average month retirement income from Social Security was just $1,294. The National Care Planning Council says that at least 60 per cent of all individuals will need extended help during their lifetimes.

Ongoing care can last for

many months or years. Longterm care needs, including assisted living and nursing home stays, beyond a few months, may not be covered by federal health insurance programs. As a result, it is up to individuals to find ways to finance their care.

Long-term care

Long-term care insurance is one of the ways to offset costs of care for later in life. But many people are unaware that this type of insurance exists. A survey conducted by Leger Marketing for the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association found that 74 per cent of respondents said they haven’t included provisions for long-term care in their retirement plans.

Long-term care insurance is a safety precaution that can be purchased early in life, to plan to help pay for expenses aging men and women may incur in their golden years. New York Life Insurance says that policy holders will be reimbursed for qualified long-term care costs up to a maximum daily benefit amount. Coverage varies, but policy premiums

generally increase with the age of applicant.

Government aid

Government aid is available for U.S. and Canadian residents, but qualifications vary and it is usually limited to those with financial hardships. Medicaid pays for the largest share of long-term care services in the United States, according to the Administration on Aging.

But to qualify, one’s income must be below a certain level and the person must meet minimum state eligibility requirements.

Canadian provinces will assess one’s ability to pay and may subsidize care costs. Also, there may only be a handful of facilities supported by the government, so applicants cannot be picky about accommodations.

Financing long-term care is something individuals must consider as they make their plans for the future. It is a large expense that cannot go unaddressed, even though the need for care might be in the distant future.

Sometimes it seems scary to think of stepping out on a limb to try something new. What if we aren’t very good? What if we really suck? What if someone laughs?

Learning how to successfully manage failure is a valuable life skill. It’s not a question of if we will fail, but when. It’s a part of life. It’s so important through childhood to learn that when you fail, you can think of what to avoid next time and know that no matter what happens, you can handle it!

I think that everyone needs to have someone in their life who they know is in their corner. That’s what allows us to risk disappointment and become resilient. I have friends who still, as adults, are afraid to try new things in case they fail. How do we teach someone not to fear failure?

A book I’m slowly chewing my way through called Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids by Dr. Laura Markham, suggests praising effort, not results. That way a child learns that working hard to master something is what’s important, not perfection.

This made me think of my daughter’s skating carnival last year. She and her group had spent months learning their routine, and were so excited to wear their costumes and show off their skills. Partway through her routine, while she was doing a spiral (chest tipped down, both arms stretched out, and one leg up), she fell. She got back up and continued on like it didn’t happen. At the end, I brought her a cluster of roses to the change room like I do each year. I told her that she had done an awesome job. She looked at me in surprise and said, “But mom…I fell.” I didn’t have a lot of time to think about hope-inspiring words to say, but what I said was, “I know.

I saw. But why you did an awesome job is that you got back up and kept skating. You’ve been working so hard this year to learn new spins and sometimes we fall when we’re learning new things.”

It was like her whole posture straightened up. I had miraculously said just the right thing (there are lots of parenting goofs bound to happen, but this was one moment where I got it right). She put back her shoulders and her demeanor changed from one of embarrassment to one of pride. Her skate hadn’t been flawless, but she had done well because of her effort and attitude.

As my children begin participating in youth sports, it’s heartbreaking when you see a parent who is only seeing the negative and attacking their child for their results.

They’re not going to do things perfectly; they’re children.

They’re more likely to continue to tackle a problem or new skill, however, if they feel confident that their hard work will lead to mastering that skill.

The book also talks about teaching self-encouragement, quoting Peggy O’Mara of Mothering Magazine for saying: “The way we talk to our child will become their inner voice.” Saying mantras like “practice makes perfect” and “if at first you don’t succeed; try, try again” actually help us to master hard tasks. This is funny to me because my inner voice says goofy things like “You’ve got this!

You’re almost there! Don’t stop now! Stop being such a pansy! Live a little!” When I look back on it, I have seen this sort of self-talk help from tasks like writing a hard test, to being interviewed by three people at once, to changing the world’s messiest diaper. Maybe it’s harder to feel like a failure if you’re in your own corner, too.

Let’s remember to be in other people’s corner and praise their efforts, not their results.

As Modern Family TV character Gloria told her husband Jay on an episode I saw recently, “Be the wind on my back, not the spit in my face.” She said it sounded nicer in Spanish.

Rat rod is used as every day delivery truck

Guy Hanak built a 1939 International D2 truck as a working vehicle.

The International Harvester Company was a United States manufacturer of agricultural machinery, construction equipment, trucks and household and commercial products. In 1902, J.P. Morgan merged the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company and Deering Harvester Company, along with three smaller agricultural equipment firms, to form International Harvester.

“This truck was in our storage yard in Camrose.

The owner bought it for his brother and they were going to fix the truck. They decided the truck was too far gone, so they decided not to. I bought it off them because I didn’t think so,” explained Guy. “I liked the patina look and made it into a rat rod.”

Some light scuffing, scratches and evidence of a long life is welcome. That is called patina. These marks and blemishes are like battle scars that become sources of pride, demonstrating that a car is an original survivor. It gives it that slightly dulled finish that reflects a car’s age and wear.

“I wanted something different like an International. I like the grille and the shape of the cab. It’s a nice truck that is not a cookie-cutter Chevrolet or Ford.

However, it has a complete Chevrolet drive train in it.

I put a 454 motor in it, a 700R, 12-bolt posi-rear end out of a Camaro. It is a hand-built frame. I put in a Model A front suspension, a straight front axle with hair pins and the back has hair pins with coil overs,” said Guy. “I shortened the box and it has turned into a good reliable truck. It was too far gone to restore to original, so it had to be a rat rod or go to the crusher.”

The official story was that pickups weren’t profitable for International Harvester because the company’s production costs were so much higher than the big three companies.

“We’ve taken it on long trips and it has been really good for us. We built it with the idea that it is going to

be a shop truck for running to get parts, and for advertising. It’s been on the road for six years now.”

International dealers also played a role in the demise of light pickups because they made more money selling, servicing and supplying parts for heavy trucks. The light-duty lineup often played second fiddle on the showroom floor.

“I like going to shows because of the people. They have passion for their own cars and it is fun spending time with the people who love what you love too.

You can share ideas and get ideas. It is not a competition, it is about the love of the vehicles,” he added.

In 1939, the lightest of the D series was offered a buyer’s choice of 113-inch and 125-inch wheelbases, with either a 6.5-foot short box or 7.5-foot long box.

Under the stylish hoods of these trucks was an engine with its roots in the Willys design.

The 213 six-cylinder featured full-length water jackets, a revised intake and revised combustion chambers, for an output of about 78 horsepower. In addition to the six-cylinder powered D-2, there was a four-cylinder powered D-5 half-ton with 46 horsepower, aimed at economy-minded operators.

Standard issue on the D-2 was a three-speed synchromesh transmission with a floor shift, while a four-speed was an extra cost option.

It featured a threespeed manual transmission, a single barrel downdraft carburetor and sold for just over $600.

“Children like seeing the old cars and think the rat rod is the coolest thing since sliced bread. I let them sit in it, they can play in it, and you get to see their eyes and smiles light up. It is worth it just to see that,” said Guy. A rat rod is a style

of hot rod or custom car that, in most cases, imitates (or exaggerates) the early hot rods of the 1940s, 1950s, and early-1960s.

The style is not to be con-

fused with the somewhat closely related traditional hot rod, which is an accurate re-creation or periodcorrect restoration of a hot rod from the same era.

She will be performing at the Camrose Resort Casino on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m.

Shawanda won a Juno award in 2013 and her career has soared ever since. She played at the Big Valley Jamboree in 2010.

Camrose Police Service calling on the community to keep their...

Camrose Police Service has launched Eyes on Camrose, a new community awareness program with the mandate of encouraging residents to keep a watchful eye on our community.

“The program is designed for each member of our community because we all play a part in ensur-

ing that our families reside in a safe city,” said Camrose Police Service crime p r e ve nt io n / c o m mu n it y relations officer Constable Kelly Bauer.

“The program will highlight several different initiatives that enable each of us to be involved.”

One of the main objectives of the Eyes on Camrose program is to encour-

age awareness by involving members of the community and the police to work together to prevent crime.

“It encourages us to be more aware of our neighbourhood; more aware of what is happening on the streets as you are driving; more aware of your surroundings when you are walking from your vehicle to the store, or as you are

shopping at community events or anywhere within our city,” continued Const.

Bauer.

“Before I started my career in policing, I thought that the police were solely responsible for public safety and they didn’t need or even want my involvement.

I thought the police were ‘for’ the people.

“Now I have a clear understanding that policing is accomplished with the people. So many crimes are prevented or solved by someone who was aware, someone who witnessed something and provided that information to the police. We, as police, really do rely on our community!”

In comparing the job of policing to that of business, Bauer added, “In my first career in business we often referred to the 80/20 rule where 20 per cent of customers were responsible for 80 per cent of the business. If I were to apply that principle to crime in a community, it would have to fall somewhere close to the 98/2 rule where two per cent of police ‘customers’ are responsible for 98 per cent of the police business.

The vast majority of our population, nearly 20,000

of us, has a desire to live in a safe community.”

The program encompasses new and existing initiatives that provide a way for members of the community to get involved.

Most of the initiatives are simple, but can make a difference in making Camrose a safer community.

Over the next weeks and months, Eyes on Camrose will introduce ways that residents can help to make a difference.

“We want to drive down our crime stats, in particular property crimes,” added Bauer in describing the need and benefit for this initiative. “It is important for residents to do all they can to prevent themselves from being victimized. Be more mindful.”

Const. Bauer encourages residents to stay tuned for more information on the upcoming initiatives that will have residents keeping their eyes on Camrose and helping to provide a safer community.

“Together, let’s tell the two per cent of police ‘customers’ that Camrose is not a place that they can do ‘business’. If we keep our ‘Eyes on Camrose’, just think what we can accomplish.”

Helen Jane Damberger Helen was born on March 11, 1924 in Wayne, Michigan, moving to Canada at the age of two.

She attended school at Alder Flats, then Meeting Creek up to Grade 8.

At this time, she worked cooking and cleaning for local families around Donalda.

Helen met Les at the old show hall on a dance night. Oh, she loved dancing; they danced the flea hop and the courtship began. They got married in the fall of 1943 and out west they went, big game hunting for their honeymoon.

Soon they began their family and had six children: Ron in 1946, LaVerne in 1948, Lane in 1952, Valinda in 1954, Susan in 1956, and Bob in 1957.

Some of Helen’s favorite things were trips out west camping and fishing. From about 1963 to 2002, the family would help pack up and head to the mountains. The first few years, it was with the truck loaded down, even the car crossing creeks, on little more than a trail; we’d all be excited to find the perfect spot to camp and fish. Helen always had her camera in hand as we went around each bend in the road, that camera was just a-clicking. Later on, Les bought a quad and had a seat made for Helen on the back. Away we’d go on the mountain trails exploring. Helen loved the family, the mountain air, the outdoor meals and, in her eyes, life couldn’t be better.

Helen and Les did most things together, whether it was dancing, playing cards, hunting, curling, visiting friends or metal detecting – they were on the go. Now, Ron got them started with metal detecting and it became a weekly, sometimes daily, hunting trip. Each morning, they would decide when and where to go detecting. We finally talked them into getting a cell phone to keep track of them. They found so many neat things: rings, old coins and pails of dinky toys. Helen enjoyed it so much and detected until she started finding it hard to get down and dig, so some of us kids would dig as she found the magic spot for treasure.

Grandkids were a special part of Helen’s life and when the great-grandkids started arriving, well … that was the icing on top. Many weekends were spent full of hugs and treats for all.

And Helen enjoyed her treats – many outings included pie and ice cream or some special sweet.

But, her camera was still at her side almost everywhere she went, all the while collecting many firstplace ribbons for her treasured photos.

About the last 15 years, Helen lived in Stettler. She enjoyed her friends and activities and a few bike rides with Ron plus many outings with family and friends.

Though the last couple years were more challenging for Helen healthwise, she always had a smile for us and friends. At Helen’s last Christmas, she was all smiles and loved having her family making a fuss over her and, again, we got great pictures of Helen and her kids to treasure.

Helen passed away peacefully on January 22, 2018, a sunny day with family by her side. She was 93 years, 10 months and 11 days. Her new journey had begun.

Left to cherish Helen’s memory are her son Ron (Eilene) Damberger, grandson Jim (Judi) Damberger, great-grandson Joshua Damberger, great-grandson Robert Orcheski; granddaughter Tracy (Don) Poirier, great-grandsons Jeremy and Marcus; daughter LaVerne (Jim) Gilles, granddaughter Tara (Brad) Hinkle, great-grandsons Riley and Carson; granddaughter Tanya (Jeff) Huolt, great-grandsons Colby, Carter, great-granddaughter Payton; grandson Scott (Maria) Gilles, great-grandsons Joshua, Matthew and Jacob, granddaughter Tracy (Guido) Tews, great-grandson Dawson, great-granddaughter Nora; son Lane (Sandra) Damberger, granddaughter Raelene (Murray) Ensign, great-granddaughters Jenna and Savanah; granddaughter Leslie (Dallas) Pybus, great-granddaughters Gracie and Miley; daughter Valinda Lea Damberger; daughter Susan Trathen, grandsons Colten and Cayle (Jordan) Trathen; Bob’s daughters and Helen’s granddaughters Chelsey (Todd) Murat, great-grandson Reed; granddaughter Charla (Geert) Bakker. Helen was predeceased by her husband Les; her parents Marcus and Agnes Hagen; sister Jean Lawrie; son Bob Damberger; and grandson Ryan Damberger.

Laura Jean Ninian March 30, 1949 ~ January 25, 2018 Laura Jean Ninian of Camrose passed away on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at the age of 68 years.

Cherishing her memory are her husband of 45 years, Greg; her children Michael and Kate (Nick); sister Carol (Bruce); as well as many other family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Les and Bea, and daughter Heather.

Laura Jean was born and raised in Regina, SK, then moved to Edmonton, AB where she met her husband. LJ worked for the government, then their married life took them to Texas.

They returned to Alberta where they raised their children. She was a kind, dedicated woman with a great sense of humor. She will be truly missed.

Pegi Lee Tennant August 7, 1957 ~ January 26, 2018 It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Pegi Lee Tennant on Friday, January 26, 2018. Pegi passed away after a very brave, ten-month-long battle against cancer. She was 60 years old.

Pegi was born into Bill and Helen’s family of six as the third oldest sibling and second daughter. As she grew up through life, she idolized Don, the eldest family member, and mothered the youngest family member, her brother Dale. Those mothering instincts only matured throughout life.

The family moved many times during childhood as Bill’s career was with CPR. Many times when Pegi recalled her childhood, she would reference her siblings and family unit as the “Sawchuk clan”.

Pegi always held an expansive and strong family bond. Family was important to her.

Pegi completed high school in Wetaskiwin where she established lifelong friendships. She was devoted to those early adulthood relationships especially during Christmas, birthdays and other special occasions or life events. Her family calendars were filled with notes on birthdays, births, anniversaries and deaths. Celebrating life, love and friendship was Pegi’s world.

She attended Camrose Lutheran College, graduating with an accounting degree. At this point in life, she made Camrose home, and it was at this time she met her future husband. It quickly became apparent their relationship and love was special and, a little after year of dating, Pegi and Guy set up a home. They were married in May 1981 and, three months later, a young family unit moved (her clan) to Norway. By this time, her clan consisted of Guy, Jason and herself.

Her mothering nature was needed in support of the two most important people in her new and adventurous life. She remained the foundation of the family unit. Jason was her world and wanted for nothing. Guy felt her caring touch and love every minute of the day and throughout their life together.

Her loving, caring nature was a calming force that was called up and needed many times in life. Her strength in her family unit and her remarkable love ensured the Tennant clan grew and succeeded in all of life’s endeavors and challenges.

Like Pegi’s childhood, her clan moved many times, however, these moves were different. They weren’t new towns in Western Canada; they were new countries and cultures in UK, Scandinavia and the Middle East. She always ensured that with each move, her home was filled with laughter, love, celebrations and many wonderful family memories.

While living in Dubai, Pegi’s love for children had her start a fledgling private children’s nursery school. Even as headmistress, her office was always full of children looking for her special attention and nurturing touch. After more than two decades, her success can be measured as some of those children still reach out today and Kids’ Cottage continues to be open for business.

As life matured and Pegi became a grandmother, her life-cycle legacy became complete. She now had an extended clan. Her love for children multiplied as she surrounded herself with her grandchildren, Connor and Kadence. They held a huge and special place in her heart.

Pegi’s strength in character, love for life and strong family bond was complimented by her smile, infectious laugh, sense of humour, home for neighbour children, love of her Black Lab dogs and neverending attention for her husband and friends. These only grew more resilient over four decades as the matriarch of the Tennant clan underscored by the success of her family and life.

In Pegi’s life, she touched many and she asked for nothing in return. She walked as an angel amongst us. Her life was simple; her only wish from family was to be loved and cherished.

And now memorialized and remembered for years to come.

Pegi will be remembered for being a loving wife by her husband Guy Tennant; a devoted mother by her son Jason Tennant of Red Deer, AB; an adoring grandmother by her grandchildren Connor and Kadence Tennant; as well as a loving sister by her younger brother Dale (Michelle) Sawchuk of Vernon, BC and older sister Judy Sawchuk of Wetaskiwin; and as a caring daughter by her parents Bill and Helen Sawchuk; and mother-in-law Doreen Tennant.

She was predeceased by her older brother Don Sawchuk and father-in-law Merle Tennant.

A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 from Camrose United Church with Rev. Mary Ann Pastuck officiating.

Teresa “Trace” Carol Ramstad June 12, 1931 ~ January 30, 2018 Teresa “Trace” Carol Ramstad of Camrose passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at the age of 86 years.

Teresa was born to Otto and Ruth Helmig on June 12, 1931 in Ankerton, Alberta. Her younger years were spent helping on the family farm along with five other siblings. She attended up to Grade 8 at Eastlynn School.

As a young teen, she worked for the May family as a cook and a housekeeper. During a thrashing season, she met Elmer Ramstad and soon after they were married on December 15, 1950. To this union, seven children were born. After many moves, Teresa and Elmer settled in Camrose.

Teresa had a variety of jobs such as cooking and cleaning for many businesses all around Camrose. Her children were always bringing home friends; she was mom to many. She has a lifelong friend in Ellen Thirsk. Some of Teresa’s passions were knitting and reading, often donating her knitting and creations to charitable causes.

Teresa is survived by five of her children Wade (Deb) of Stettler, Bruce (Brenda) of Camrose, Bernice (Brent) Guhle of Daysland, Cheryl (Greg) Coleman of Innisfail and Blake (Kathy) of Rosalind. She is also survived by ten grandchildren; seven greatgrandchildren; and two sisters.

She was predeceased by her husband Elmer; two sons Ward and Blaine; one granddaughter Breann; and three siblings.

She will be sadly missed by all.

On January 28, 2018, John passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospice in Edmonton AB, at the age of 92, surrounded by family.

John is survived by his children Stuart (Jan), Aubrey (Marilyn), Johnette (Al), Howard (Donna), Hugh and Bret (Colette); his son-in-law Grant Harrison (Debra); 21 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

John is predeceased by his wife Jo (2012); his daughter Hermione Jo Harrison (1984); and by his grandson John Rudolph Williams (2011).

John was a very proud Canadian. Prior to coming to Canada in 1947, John served in the Royal Air Force during World War II. His greatest joy and the love of his life was his wife Jo and the seven children she gave him. Family was of the utmost importance to him and he made sure he kept up with what all of them were doing.

John loved his gardens, flowers, birds, travelling and spending time with family.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2018 in Tofield Funeral Chapel, Tofield AB. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Kodiaks edge Crusaders

The Camrose Kodiaks scored three straight goals to edge the Sherwood Park Crusaders 3-2 on Jan. 30.

The line of Tyler S c hendel, Colson Gengenbach and Colby Wolter was on fire as they each picked up a goal.

Sherwood Park scored first, but less than three minutes later Schendel tied the contest.

The middle frame belonged to the Kodiaks as they added two more goals.

The Crusaders fought back with one in the third, but it wasn’t enough to make a comeback.

Goalie Luke Lush stopped 30 of 32 shots.

Camrose had 34 shots on the Sherwood Park net.

The win moved Camrose into a tie with the Canucks with a game in hand.

The Kodiaks hammered the Calgary Canucks 12-2 on Jan. 26 to make a statement.

Camrose was two points back of the Canucks, with two games in hand, in the Alberta Junior Hockey League south standings, but it was made clear which team was better on the night.

The Kodiaks scored four goals in each period and dominated from the opening puck drop to the final buzzer.

Veteran Matt Dykstra led the charge with a hat trick (three goals), one in each period. Kyler Kupka and McKenzie Welke chipped in with two goals each.

Jacob Kendall, Nic Correale, Carson Welke, Nick Mantai and Colson Gengenbach added single markers. Only the last goal was on the power play.

Camrose recorded a whopping 62 shots on goal, while goalie Luke Lush stopped 24 of 26 shots he faced in the Kodiaks’ cage.

Both in the first and third periods the Kodiaks had 22 shots on goal.

Camrose lost a tough 2-1 decision to the frontrunning Brooks Bandits the night.

The Kodiaks netted a shorthanded tally from defenceman Peter Kope between the Bandits’ goals in the opening frame. Both squads played perfect defensive hockey the final two periods.

Lush turned away 36 of 38 shots he faced in the contest.

The next Camrose home game is at the Max McLean Arena against the Fort McMurray Oil Barons on Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. The Canmore Eagles are at the Encana Arena on Feb. 11 in an afternoon contest at 2 p.m.

This award is presented annually in recognition of an individual officer’s commitment towards going above and beyond his/her duties as a member of the CPS. Typically, a worthy nominee would set high standards for volunteering at community events, working with sports-related and other Camrose organizations, and devoting personal time towards a variety of causes within our city.
