The CAFCL Charity Auction is an annual event held at the Best Western Resort Casino. The evening features a dinner, silent and entertaining live auction. The purpose of the outing is to raise funds for programs and needs not funded by government.

In September, Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Montréal arrived in Western Europe to participate in Neptune Trident 17, a Royal Canadian Navy deployment.

The first exercise in the deployment for HMCS Montréal, Formidable Shield 17, is an allied relations effort to improve performance in a live-fire Integrated Air and Missile Defense environment.

Able Seaman Owen Storvik is a naval electronic sensor operator aboard the HMCS Montréal. Originally from Camrose, Storvik graduated high school from Camrose Composite High School and joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 2014. He spent seven

weeks deployed aboard the HMCS Fredericton in 2015 on Operation Reassurance in central and Eastern Europe to support security and international cooperation.

Storvik joined the Canadian Armed Forces for the unique experiences and the camaraderie that comes along with the job. “I joined the CAF to experience new things, see new places and learn new things I would not learn in any other job,” he said. “[There are] countless opportunities and working in a very tight team atmosphere with amazing Canadians from all walks of life across our nation.”

Part of his duties include the firing of gun

and missile equipment carried on major naval warships, operating the radar and radio detection devices and locating and identifying friendly and enemy submarines, ships and aircraft. While on the HMCS Montréal, Storvik will be part of the Fire Control Team operating either the Forward or After Ceros (fire control radar) or CIWS (close in weapons system.)

Storvik said he loves the camaraderie of life on a warship, just understanding other shipmates while dealing with ups and downs during days at sea and having physical fitness as a regular part of his routine. “Shooting the gun, of course, is icing on the cake,” he said.

THE KEY TO HIGHER YIELDS IN CANOLA AND SPRING WHEAT For canola and spring wheat growers, making the right investments to achieve higher yields can be tricky.

Research on fertility and seed safety shows how MicroEssentials® S15™ could be the right investment for growers in Western Canada.

Spring Wheat Yield Trials The Mosaic Company evaluated the yield response of spring wheat during the 2014 and 2015 growing seasons. The trial compared MicroEssentials S15 (13-33-0-15S) + MOP to MAP (11-52-0) + MOP. MAP is commonly used as a phosphorus (P) fertilizer for spring wheat, and MicroEssentials is a premium P fertilizer that provides two forms of sulphur (S) (sulphate and elemental sulphur) for season-long availability.

Spring wheat can also benefit from applications of potassium (K). Both fertilizer blends were applied during preplant and utilized as a broadcast method. In the end, the study showed that when MicroEssentials S15 and MOP were applied, a 7.7 bu/ac increase over nitrogen (N) occurred, and a 2.2 bu/ac increase occurred over MAP + MOP. Seed Safety Canola is a very sensitive seed when placed in close proximity to N and S fertilizers. Seed-placing P and basing application rates on seed safety rather than crop requirements can have a great effect on growers’ yields.

Recent research conducted by the University of Manitoba examined seed-safe rates of phosphorus and sulphur in canola, and found that P applied at rates based on seed safety may not be adequate enough to maximize yields.

Hybrid canola requires a higher amount of P and S throughout the growing season. The typical seed-placed rates for canola are 20 to 25 pounds of P2O5/ac and 10 pounds of S/ac. But, a 45-bu/ac crop of canola will remove 36 pounds of P2O5 and 13.5 pounds of S from the field.

This means that there is higher uptake of P and S throughout the growing season than put in for a seed-safety rate, and ultimately, under-application of these nutrients will limit yield potential and deplete soil reserves.

Seed-placed fertilizers give farmers the benefit of knowing nutrients are available at the start of the growing process.

Immobile nutrients, such as P, can be the cause of a poor stand even though they provide the benefit of being easily available to the root right away.

Included in the University of Manitoba’s research was MicroEssentials S15. Improved stands and seed safety occurred when MicroEssentials S15 was applied at the same rate as traditional blends, like MAP and AS. Higher rates of phosphorus and sulphur applied with blends accounted for a loss of 11 plants per square meter.

MicroEssentials S15 saved nearly 50 percent more plants, with a reduction of only six plants per square meter when applied at the same rates of P and S.

A blend of MAP + AS is commonly used as the fertilizer source for canola growers. A proper application of P and S is critical for optimum canola yields. The fertilizer was applied with the seed at planting. Across the three-year trial period, MicroEssentials S15 increased yield by 1.0 bu/ac, 1.6 bu/ac and 3.7 bu/ac, respectively, over MAP + AS fertilizers. The 3.7 bu/ac yield advantage in 2013 demonstrates the superior performance of MicroEssentials under optimum growing conditions.

CRE renames rooms after honourary past directors Rip-off alert

I’m still fuming.

I went online to reserve a hotel room. Typed in the hotel name and went to what I thought was the hotel’s website with the hotel photo, local phone number and so on. Clicked on the place to reserve a room. Picked the dates and type of room I wanted. Noticed that the stated room rate was $80.32, which was less than expected. Given what I know of the hotel and the community it’s in, wasn’t overly surprised.

The hotel is older with fewer amenities and has way more competition than it used to, so assumed it had lowered its rates a bit.

Noticed that I was connected to reservations.com, but didn’t think anything of it. Lots of hotels and hotel chains use a booking company. Typed in contact and credit card information to reserve the room and clicked “reserve.”

Received the confirmation email and scanned it. Guest details, check; reservation details, check; hotel details, check; room details, check; payment details…what? That’s when non-event became an event. ***

Surprise #1: The total cost. The room rate was listed at the rate that had been on the website. What was not on the website was the addition of “taxes and fees.” I wasn’t surprised by taxes, but what was the “$14.99 service fee” all about? The total was now $107.69–about one-third higher than expected. Some “muttermuttermutter” grumpiness started. Oh well, it was still a reasonable rate. Until…

Surprise #2: “We have charged your credit card for the total amount of this reservation.”

What? I’m used to providing credit card information to hold a room or rental car or other travel requirements. I am not used to the credit card charge being put through immediately without advance notice from the vendor. Low-level “muttermuttermutter” was becoming louder. And then it got really loud…

Surprise #3: “All prices are displayed in $USD.” What? US dollars? Nowhere on the website had that been specified. Since I thought I was booking on a reservations.com site connected to the Canadian hotel, not a cell in my brain was thinking US dollars.

Do the math. My $80.32 room that actually cost $107.69 had now upped the ante to somewhere between $135 and $145 Canadian–already charged to my credit card. My lowlevel grumpiness increased to anger.

It was not the price itself–$135 to $145 is average in that community. It was the expectation of $80 becoming $135 or $145. Decided to cancel.

Not-surprise #4: Read the cancellation policy. “We do not charge a change or cancel fee…,” but later on, “The USD $14.99 fee included in the total in non-refundable.” By then I was irritated but not surprised–yep, of course these guys would keep the money they charged for performing an automated function that cost them pennies.

I phoned and cancelled. Within a minute, my cancellation confirmation arrived–with another surprise.

Surprise #5: “Refund information: If you are due a refund, we have issued a refund request. Please note refunds may take up to 30 days from cancellation date to be visible on your account.”

Pause here for teeth gnashing. They had my money in 30 seconds. They will return my money in up to 30 days.

Meanwhile, they’re earning interest, and I’m paying interest.

Camrose Regional Exhibition is now sporting new names on rooms formerly known as the Gold and Red Rooms.

Long standing past directors of the CRE, Dr. Red Elliot and Ben Hirsch were honoured with the renaming of the Red Room to Elliot Hall and the Gold Room to Hirsch Hall.

On Sept. 30, at a formal evening, family, friends and community members gathered at the CRE to celebrate the contributions of both honourees.

In speaking of Ben Hirsch, CRE president Mark Schneider said, “Ben was very involved (with the CRE) for many years starting in 1949 as a labourer building the fairgrounds. He first joined through membership then he joined the board holding many posi-

tions and serving on several committees.

“He was a big promoter of the Ag Society (now known as the CRE) and was an extraordinary volunteer. He was always there when you needed him. In 1997-98, he became an honourary director of the CRE. Behind every good man is a good woman as well and, although this was named after Ben, we know in behind Doris was doing a lot.”

Schneider continued with a tribute to Dr. Red Elliot. “Red was a very influential man in the agriculture industry through his business and volunteering.

“The earliest we could find, Red was on the board since the mid 60s and held many positions for many year. In the early 60s Red made the decision that they (and by that I am assuming Fran and business partners) needed

to be more involved in the Ag and community events and, from that day forward, they were very involved and widened the scope of what they did in the community.

“Even though Red had a busy practice and a farm of his own, he always made time for the board, many times jumping in and assisting with the set-up and tear-down of any event. He did it all and never shied away from anything.

“In 1998-99, he became an honourary director of the CRE. He was an extraordinary volunteer and was very passionate about being in and part of the community.

He treated everybody as though they were friends.

“I would also like to thank Fran for her contributions as she worked beside Red in many of these instances and she took care of things on the farm when Red was gone.”

I phoned the hotel directly and made the reservation.

Told them the story and the staff were properly horrified, but could do nothing. The hotel knows this happens often and says it cannot stop reservations.com from making bookings.

My new policy: Phone hotels directly to make reservations. My advice to you: never book a hotel reservation through reservations.com. It will cost more than the hotel charges, they will charge in US dollars, they will put through the charge immediately and if you need to cancel you won’t receive the credit for up to 30 days.

I appreciate the convenience of online transactions. But I am so tired of feeling like just another object to exploit. ***

Informative water well management workshop will help residents protect their water wells.

Have you had your well water tested in the last two years? Have old unused wells on your property been properly sealed and decommissioned? Have you ever shock chlorinated your well? Do you know the age and depth of your well, or how it was constructed?

According to Alberta water specialist Ken Williamson, if you answered no to any of these questions, your groundwater supply could be at risk. Despite the fact that 450,000 Albertans rely on groundwater for household use, few know that proper water well construction, siting, and maintenance can help protect your well from contamination.

To ensure the safety of your water well, you should also know how far your septic system is from your well. Septic tanks should be regularly pumped and inspected. You should also disinfect your well on a regular basis.

It is also important to regularly test and document the quality and quantity of water from your well. By keeping good records you can see how water quality and well performance has changed over time.

Proper well maintenance and operation can save you costly repairs and ensure your well water yields are sustained over many years.

If you’d like to find out if your groundwater is at risk and learn what you can do to protect your well, attend a free water well management workshop being hosted by Camrose County, and presented by the Working Well Program, with technical expertise from Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, Alberta Environment and Parks, Alberta Health Services and licensed water well drillers on

Supper will be provided for a charge of $10 per person.

Our thoughts and prayers and are with the victims of the recent violent attack in Edmonton. We thank our courageous first responders, especially the officer injured in the attack, and all those involved in stopping the suspect. We stand with the people of Edmonton and the Edmonton City Police. As well, we are all shocked at the massmurder shooting tragedy in Las Vegas. These two events occurring so closely together should serve to reinforce our determination to continue to work to stop these kinds of violent acts.

In Parliament, I have been voicing opposition to the tax hikes on small businesses in Canada proposed by the Liberal government. I thank the owners of smalland medium-sized businesses, including their family members and employees for taking action and sharing with me your personal experience and concern over this attack by the cash-starved and indebted Liberal government and multi-millionaires Prime Minister Trudeau and finance minister Bill Morneau.

I am pleased to report that I have heard from virtually all sectors of our local economy in Battle RiverCrowfoot. Hopefully, our pressure from enough Canadians will cause the Liberals to drop their draconian tax measures that will only hurt Canada’s economy and our local small businesses.

The job of the Official Opposition is to provide critical analysis and recommendations to the government’s implementation of their policy. Numerous times, I have spoken out against the Liberals’ tax policy in the House of Commons in this session. Yet, two speeches I delivered so far support the government’s proposed legislation. Bill C-21 amends Canada’s Customs Act building on work from the previous Conservative government. It acknowledges that abuses occur of the privileges our exporters enjoy and takes measures to beef-up the inspection of exports from our nation. This further strengthens Canada’s credentials as an exporting nation.

Bill S-2 is the Liberal government’s re-introduction of motor vehicle safety measures not passed in the previous Parliament. It will provide the transport minister the ability to force automobile manufacturers to issue recall notices, repair new vehicles that have problems, and more. I spoke in support of Bill S-2.

I spoke numerous times during the debate on Tuesday, Oct. 3 when we dedicated our Opposition Day to debating the following Motion: “Given the proposed changes to the taxation of private corporations, as outlined in the minister of finance’s paper “Tax Planning Using Private Corporations;” it will have a drastic negative impact on small and medium sized local businesses. The House called on the government to continue debate, its consultations on these measures,” until Jan. 31, 2018. The Liberals used their majority to vote down our motion.

The Conservative Party will continue to use every Parliamentary procedure and rule to keep political pressure on the Prime Minister and finance minister to back down from their tax proposals. It is important for Canadians to continue to speak out in defense of our small- and medium-sized businesses in every community in our country.

Police responded to a complaint which resulted in officers seizing four firearms and ammunition. A 42-year-old male has been charged under the Firearms Act. October 3

RCMP attended a residence in Rosalind to assist EMS with a patient.

Police received a report of a male breaching his conditions. Charges are pending and the file is currently before the court.

A subject wearing a dark hoodie with the hood up, set off the driveway alarm at a residence in Hay Lakes around 11:30 p.m.

The subject was observed running away southbound from 4th Avenue S. Report any information to Camrose RCMP. Police also received 12 reports of traffic collisions; three reports of speeding/ erratic driving; six reports of suspicious persons/vehicles and two false alarms/ abandoned 911 calls.

Camrose RCMP has been receiving numerous complaints of telephone scams.

Kodiaks stay close to unbeaten Okotoks

In the rematch of the Battle of the Bears, Olds Grizzlys scored in overtime to outlast the Camrose Kodiaks 8-7 on Oct. 8.

Olds scored the first three tallies in the first frame, but Camrose fought back with two goals before the 20 minutes were up.

Matt Dykstra and Ryan Hartman scored single markers for the Kodiaks.

In the second, Kyle Kupka scored his first of a hat trick to tie the game. Former Kodiak player Estian Coetzee put Olds out front once again, but Kupka scored two more times and Hartman added his second of the game. Coetzee replied again to cut the Camrose lead to 6-5.

The Kodiaks went up by two goals when Carson Welke added a marker early in the third. However, two power play goals by Olds had the game knotted again.

Olds garnered the winner early in overtime to win

it. Kodiaks goalie Griffin Bowerman didn’t make a save on three shots, so he was relieved by Landon Pavilsin who stopped 12 of 17 shots.

Camrose lost a close 3-2 contest to the unbeaten Okotoks Oilers on Oct. 7.

Okotoks is currently 10-0, but the Kodiaks provided them with the toughest opposition of the season.

The Kodiaks had an even opening period with Kupka scoring after the Oilers were the first to get on the scoreboard. Dykstra collected the only goal in the second frame to give the Kodiaks a 2-1 lead. The Oilers came out fired up in the third to net two tallies.

Camrose outshot the Oilers 25-20 in the tight defensive struggle. Bowerman stopped 17 of 20 shots in the Camrose cage.

The Kodiaks are at home on Oct. 19 for a game against the Bonnyville Pontiacs and on Saturday, Oct. 21 for a match with Brooks.

By Lori Larsen Enjoying a warm day on beautifully manicured greens is something Camrose residents are lucky enough to experience; and for 10 years, Marnie and Bill Penny have been diffusing their love of the game and dedication to ensuring Camrose and area have a professionally maintained golf course into the Camrose Golf Course.

Bill’s professional golf career began early as a result of pursuing his passion for golf. “I got into the golf business in 1971 in Victoria as a young assistant pro and from there in 1974 had the opportunity to go to Hawaii and work at Royal Kaanapili in Maui,” Bill said gratefully of the beginning of a long and wonderful golf career. “I was fortunate to be introduced to a world class facility at a very young age.”

Returning to Canada in 1974, Bill immediately stepped into the role of head golf pro at Glen Meadows on Vancouver Island where he stayed until 1983, after which he was successful in obtaining a position with Edmonton’s private Country Club, one of the oldest clubs in North America.

“I moved my family in 1983 from Victoria to Edmonton and as I look back and reflect on my career, that was probably the best move I made.”

After spending 1983 through 1998 as head pro at the Edmonton Country Club, Bill and family moved to Canmore, when an opportunity arose to be involved in opening Stewart Creek Golf & Country Club, a world class golf course in the Rockies.

“That was quite exciting,” said Bill, reminiscing about the amazing oppor-

Camrose Golf Course came asking Bill to consider the position in Camrose. “I was at the twilight of my career and thought it would be a nice move and a good fit for both Marnie and myself so we jumped at the opportunity and moved here in 2008 and we have certainly enjoyed our time here.”

Bill admitted the first couple of years were a bit challenging; with some restructuring of the course came long hours added to the commute from Sherwood Park, and a little resistance from some members on the practices Marnie and Bill wanted to implement.

“We restructured things and made the move to Camrose at end of 2009, then things started to turn around.”

The transitions Marnie and Bill brought in were eventually met with posi-

tive feedback, which helped to make the course a world class facility, where a person can enjoy a quick round of golf or one of the many special events or tournaments hosted there.

“We are respected as one of the finest courses in Central Eastern Alberta,” noted Bill.

Beyond creating a first class golf experience for residents, Bill also built a valuable relationship with the University of Alberta Augustana in setting up a golf program.

“The program was accepted to the ACAC conference back in 2014 and in our second year, 2015, our men’s team captured the gold and went onto the national conference,” smiled Bill adding that he was chosen as the coach of the year for college golf, something that clearly made him very proud.

After 10 seasons, Marnie and Bill have decided to hang up the golf towel.

The couple will be greatly missed as regular fixtures at the course.

As associate professional, Marnie has not only been beside Bill every step of the way through his vast and interesting career but been a supportive and devote partner in 45 years of marriage. “I get a lot of credit, but without the support of a strong wife/ partner in business you are not the success you are. I could never have begun to achieve the success I have had without Marnie.”

Bill intends on continuing with some teaching, especially in outlaying golf courses around Camrose, his work with the Augustana golf program and encouraging youth to become involved with golf.

“There are 23 students in the Our Lady Mount Pleasant golf academy and the Augustana golf team come and assist with them.

It is great connectivity and so good for the young players to see the older students involved.”

The OLMP program offers five $3,000 scholarships for a four year commitment, donated by community business people.

“There are opportunities with golf to finance continuing education (such as the OLMP scholarships). This is one of the few places in Canada that offers golf scholarships,” said Bill, noting how much he enjoys working with the youth of today, who are the future of tomorrow.

The most important fundraiser of the year for the Bailey Theatre will be held on Saturday, Oct. 28.

The event titled Eat, Drink and Make Merry will generate funds to cover operating costs at the downtown theatre.

Lisa Alain and her committee are planning a classic “picnic feel” event for the upcoming fall fundraiser.

The evening includes tasty tapas and desserts. Refreshment choices will be four micro-breweries at the event with samples of their tasty brews.

There will be live and silent auctions items, wandering performers and games of chance.

Lisa Alain said, “As the

downtown community theatre, we are reaching out to others by adding a Pay It Forward program,” said Lisa Alain. “We have been overwhelmed by the generous donations from the businesses for the Pay It Forward program.”

There will be games to play where the guests can decide which charitable organization will receive the prize, thus paying it forward. Guests may also decide to donate some silent auction items through this program.

Camrose Women’s Shelter, The Open Door, and the Augustana Reciprocity Shelf will benefit from the games.

By participating in the program, guests will receive a charitable tax receipt.

“Bailey benefits from the donation and others receive the gift. Your charitable dollars go twice as far and add merriment to others,” said Lisa.

Lion Bear Fox back at the Bailey

Three strong solo artists came together to form Lion Bear Fox. The trio will be performing again, two days short of a full year since the last stop, at the Bailey Theatre on Friday, Oct. 20 at 8 p.m.

Chris Arruda (Lion), Cory Woodward (Bear) and Ryan McMahon (Fox) kept crossing paths in the folk music circuit, so they decided to work together to create magic on stage.

“All three of us were solo artists for about a decade before we started this project. We have been front men of different rock and folk bands. Then you play on your own and it is an interesting path to take,” said Chris. “It is a lot of hard work and difficult when you don’t have other people to help you along. I almost stopped because I was getting tired. We toured the country and it was a great experience.”

Fox merges three huge voices sharing stories through compelling lyrics, honest narrative and unbridled passion. “We started out playing three separate sets and then slowly we would back up each other on certain songs,” recalled Chris. “We grew closer together and at the end of the tour, in Winnipeg, we were told that we only had 20 minutes to play. We didn’t have time to each play, so we played the songs that all of us knew. The response was overwhelming. It was bigger than the sum of its parts and that is how it started.”

A year later they recorded their first CD and they have been playing as a trio for five years. “We all have distinct voices and song writing styles. The first year was a learning curve and we kept playing and a style just emerged, rather than setting out on a style,” said Chris. “It has evolved into a cohesive sounding unit.”

The band name was a collection of throwback ani-

mals that were not taken.

“We wanted a earthy name to our band because I think that is what our music sounds like.

At the same time we wanted something that represented us separately,” added Chris.

“Cory is part Métis and his spirit growing up was always a bear. I’m a Leo and have a big tatoo of a lion on my chest.

Ryan is extremely crafty and he became the fox.”

They love Camrose.

“We are thrilled to play in Camrose. Our music really belongs in a theatre setting.

One thing we set out to do this tour was to avoid playing in bars. We have high energy, but we have intimate songs as well that work well in a theatre. We love places with historic legacy. If you have the right venue, you can maintain that intimate feeling of just 15 people, but with a larger audience that adds energy to the room. We like to tell stories and with a theatre setting you get to do that.”

When Japanese drumming was first introduced to North America, people were amazed at the precise rhythm and sound.

Years later, the music has emerged into a fantastic show as well as a musical delight.

Fubuki Daiko with taiko drumming masters will be on stage at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Friday, Oct. 20 at 8 p.m.

This show takes Japanese drumming into the 21st century by taking the music and transforming it into an entertaining show that unfolds before your eyes.

In ancient Japan, taiko drums were used to frighten invaders and communicate with neighbouring villages. For over 20 years, Fubuki Daiko has been reinventing this traditional art form merging primal roots with modern sensibilities.

A ‘purr’fect shelter for cats Five hundred years of Reformation For Canadian Protestants who like celebrations, 2017 has been a good year.

Just as Canada 150 is winding down, we get to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation.

According to tradition, on Oct. 31, 1517, Martin Luther nailed 95 theses to the door of the castle church in Wittenberg and with that act Geoffrey Dipple, History, started the Reformation.

University of Alberta In many ways, the postAugustana Campus ing of the 95 theses seems an odd choice as an event to mark the beginning of the Reformation. To begin with, it may or may not have happened as many of us imagine it. There are no contemporary accounts of Luther posting his theses in this way, although we do know that he sent copies of them to his superiors in the church. Furthermore, Luther did not set out to start a new church, but to reform the existing one.

As the first step in that process, the theses were hardly revolutionary and do not contain many of the central teachings for which Luther later became famous. They were written in dense ecclesiastical Latin and are, to be completely frank, rather tedious — unless you get excited by the intricacies of late medieval scholastic theology.

Much more exciting are Luther’s famous writings from 1520, The Address to the Christian Nobility, On the Freedom of a Christian and The Babylonian Captivity of the Church. In addition, while 1517 may be an important date for Lutherans, it is much less significant for other groups commonly identified as Protestant. For example, John Calvin, arguably as significant a figure in the history of Protestantism as Luther, if not more so, was only eight years old when the theses were “posted.”

No matter when we celebrate it, by most accounts the Protestant Reformation remains a momentous event in Western, and even world, history. Here, too, perspective is everything. For some, the Reformation is connected to the recognition of the freedom of conscience, the rise of science, the birth of capitalism, and the beginnings of modern representative democracy. For others, it is the beginning of excessive consumerism, with its needless squandering of the earth’s resources; secularism; rampant individualism; and moral subjectivism – all of which have stood in the way of true enjoyment of the perceived benefits of the Reformation.

After many years of studying, teaching and writing about history, especially the history of the Protestant Reformation, I have become very suspicious of grand theories that trace most of subsequent history to a single event. So, while I think the Reformation was a very important historical event, I am unconvinced that it changed the world as profoundly as either its champions or its detractors claim.

But I still think there are things we can learn from this event. For example, the age that succeeds the Reformation is often referred to as the Age of Religious Wars, when Europe tore itself apart in conflicts, largely along religious lines, that were as brutal as the Syrian civil war is today. Yet in the midst of that destruction, communities of different faiths found ways to live together and laid the groundwork for modern notions of religious toleration. In a world in which religious violence seems only to escalate, perhaps their experiences are still relevant.

Should you wish to learn more about this event, either to celebrate or lament it, the Chester Ronning Centre will host a screening of the movie Luther followed by a panel discussion in the Lougheed Performing Arts Centre at 6 p.m. on Oct. 24. And on Oct. 31 at noon, my colleague Brandon Alakas and I will lead a discussion of the Reformation and the tradition of reform in the church in the Roger Epp room on the Augustana Campus.

With the recent approval by City of Camrose council to fund an animal shelter, the members of Camrose and Area Animal Shelter Society are ecstatic knowing they will have an indoor facility to house some of Camrose’s lost and stray cats.

that there are many cats who don’t have homes.”

Hertel indicated the plan for cats that are not claimed will be to have them spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and adopted to an approved home. In the event of a shortage of space at the shelter, some cats may be transferred out to other rescue facilities.

“The shelter will be completely volunteer run,” said Hertel. “The shelter will not likely have fulltime business hours, but we’re discussing what hours to be open on a regular basis, as well as having an on-call volunteer for intake and reuniting with owners outside of those set hours.”

The Shelter Society welcomes monetary donations, supplies or refundable bottles from the public to assist with fundraising and supplying the shelter. Any bottle donations, pet food or supplies can be dropped off at Pet Valu during business hours, and bottle donations can be dropped off any time in the back alley at The Paw Spot (630643A Avenue).

Monetary donations can be mailed by cheque or e-transferred.

Harrison wins golf provincials, men’s team advances

The next game for the Vikings in the EnCana Arena is against SAIT at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 20.

Portage is in Camrose on Oct. 28 to take on the Vikings at 6 p.m.

Michael Harrison of Camrose and the Augustana Vikings captured the provincial golf title with a 153 total in two rounds at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference provincials.

The men’s team also advanced to nationals by coming in second in team play. Coach Bill Penny will be sending Harrison, Braden Clarkson, Craig Lynes, Darion Geddes and Carson Roche to Ontario.

On the women’s side, Cienna Hewitt placed in a tie for ninth spot with two rounds of 99. Teammate Darcie Beniot finished in 12th place for the Vikings.

Nationals will be on Oct. 15 to 21 in Oshawa.

Volleyball

The women’s and men’s Vikings open the regular season at home on Oct. 20 at 6 and 8 p.m. against Concordia.

Augustana will be hosting the women’s ACAC championships on Feb. 22 to 24.

Basketball

Soccer

The women’s Vikings open the season at Concordia on Oct. 20 both women’s and men’s teams play the same team in Camrose on Oct. 21. The women’s game starts at 6 and the men follow at 8 p.m.

Cross-country running

The Vikings will be at the fall regionals on Nov. 24 to 26 in St. Paul.

The north regionals are on Jan. 26 to 28, 2018 at Concordia (Avonair). Provincials are set for Feb. 16 to 18 with Augustana and the Rose City Curling Club are hosting the championships.

The University of A lberta Aug ustana Vikings women’s and men’s soccer teams play on Oct. 22 in Camrose against the Keyano Huskies. Game times for both series is at noon and 2 p.m. This is the last home game of the regular season.

Augustana will now focus on provincials that will be held on Oct. 28 in Red Deer.

Hockey

The NAIT Ooks spoiled the regular season opener for the Vikings when they edged them 3-2 in the second overtime period.

Curling

A scoreless drought

in the third carried over into the extra frames until NAIT’s Jarid Hauptman netted the winner.

In the Vikings’ net, Curtis Skip stopped 46 of 49 shots he faced.

NAIT scored the first

four goals in the rematch and went on to win 5-1.

Joseph Tambasco collected the lone marker for the Vikings.

Skip had another busy night in the net and turned away 46 of 51 shots.

Biathlon

The Vikings host a Calforex Cup at the Camrose Biathlon Range on Jan. 13 and 14.

Cross-country skiing

The Vikings will be hosting the Ole Uffda Loppet at the Stoney Creek centre on Feb. 3.

Walter Joseph Kuefler November 16, 1927 ~ October 8, 2017 Walter was born to Peter and Francis Kuefler on November 16, 1927 at Galahad, the second oldest of eleven children.

Walter married the love of his life Leone Roth on March 28, 1951. Over the past 66 years together, they raised their family and supported their friends, community and their church. Walter was quiet, patient, humble, meticulous and loving. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time out with family and friends in the trailer or motorhome. His great enjoyment was his shop and he used his carpentry craftsmanship to support his family and help many others. He loved family celebrations. He was the mayor of Bittern Lake and served on the board of Stoney Creek and Rosalta Lodge for many years.

Walter will be long remembered and greatly missed. He was predeceased by his son Kenneth; brothers Allan and Patrick; and his great-grandson Nolan McGregor. Herbert Dietz January 6, 1930 ~ September 30, 2017 Herb was born on January 6, 1930 on a farm located NE of Forestburg, Alberta to Katarina and Fred Dietz. He grew up the eighth sibling in a family of 12. Herb attended school in Galahad, Alberta and went on to graduate from the Vermilion School of Agriculture, Class of 1952. Herb married the love of his life Genevie Zenovia Odovichuc on July 6, 1956. Upon his father’s retirement, Herb bought the family farm and spent his career running a mixed farming operation and raising his family in the Galahad community until he and Genevie retired to Forestburg.

Herb was a community-minded individual and involved in many local groups over his lifetime; notably as a 4-H leader, a 55-year member of the Masons, spent 20 years serving the Association of Alberta Co-op Seed Cleaning Plants and was an inaugural member of the Galahad Lions Club. He was also a member of the Forestburg Art Society and the Walter Jahns Singers Choir.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 60 years Genevie; children Lyle (Cindy) Dietz of Galahad and Brian (Brenda) Dietz of Sherwood Park; four grandchildren Robin, Brent, Becky and Kelly; two great-grandchildren Brock and Nash; and many special nieces and nephews. Also left to mourn his loss are his brother Arnold (Nancy) Dietz; his sisters Emelia Coven; Edna Neufeld and Evelyn (Ed) Henkle.

Sheila Bonny MacMillan (nee: Erickson) August 9, 1942 ~ September 18, 2017 We would like to announce the sudden and tragic loss of another of this world’s true angels, Sheila MacMillan. This loss is shared by her loving fiancé Yvon Morin; her three children; three stepchildren; her sister; two nieces; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and, of course, her many friends and co-workers.

A small family gathering was held and her ashes will be spread in Tofino, BC at the end of April.

She is someone we’d never have made it without – too often, the last to be thanked, but always the first in our hearts! We love you, Nana!!!

Annabelle Mildred Klatchuk passed away peacefully on September 29, 2017 at the age of 86 years at St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends, including everyone at Queen Alexandra Lodge in Edmonton where she lived for 21 years.

Annabelle was born on October 27, 1930 to Henery and Mildred Paul on the farm in Balgonia, Saskatchewan. She was the tenth child of 13. She completed her Grade 10 before moving to Edmonton where she took a job at Woolworth’s Department Store in the stationary department. She worked her way up to assistant manager of all departments.

Annabelle met Stanley Klatchuk and married him on September 9, 1949. They settled on the family farm. Two children were born to this union. In 1954, they purchased a service station on Highway 16.

Annabelle will be lovingly remembered by her sisters Eileen (Chamlers) Wirth and Doreen Helpan; her daughters Beverely (Ray) Carlisle and Diane (Emil) Pikula; one grandson Kelcey (Cheryl) Carlisle; two great-grandsons Brenden and Josh; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband Stanley; parents Henery and Mildred Paul; her brothers Milton, Ed, Dan, Basil, Gilbert, Everett, Giles and Myrl; and two sisters Annagail and Pattie.

A celebration of life was held on Friday, October 13, 2017 Weber’s Mount Pleasant Chapel in Camrose with Rev. Adam Hall officiating. Cremation has taken place.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Mary’s Hospital Palliative Care Fund or to the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

Pogo car share expands to Camrose

University of Alberta Augustana Campus launched the popular car sharing service to Camrose.

After a successful run in Edmonton, Pogo CarShare service had its first expansion to a new municipality in Camrose.

Pogo will offer three car-sharing vehicles on the Augustana Campus.

The service is Alberta’s first rural car share program and was announced at the provincially-attended Rural Transportation Information Day II, which was held in Camrose.

The expansion brings the car-sharing service to faculty, staff, students and the community in Camrose. Pogo’s Camrose vehicles can be booked multiple days in advance and are always returned to dedicated parking at the Augustana campus.

Dr. Peter Berg, an Augustana Campus faculty member and early advocate of the program, is looking forward to using the service. “It’s very convenient –

a few clicks on your phone and you’re off. And personally, our family has only one car and a car share will help us keep it that way.

Most importantly, it will provide our students with a much-needed transportation solution within Camrose and beyond.”

Kieran Ryan, a cofounder of Pogo CarShare, said launching with Augustana Campus is a great way to bring car sharing to a campus and municipality.

“Car sharing provides many benefits to the campus and community. It’s affordable, it reduces parking congestion on campus, and it’s a great transportation option to have. Car sharing is a great amenity for a municipality and university campus.”

The university was looking for another mode of transportation to go along with the community bus.

“Augustana was looking at a car-sharing service to be able to help students with their transportation issues. At the same time, we were looking to replace

some f leet vehicles,” explained James Smith, Augustana’s senior financial officer. “Cost wise, it makes sense for university business purposes and it’s a reasonable transportation alternative for the students.”

Pogo CarShare, an Edmonton start-up launched in October 2014, became Edmonton’s first and only car-sharing service. The service allows users to rent cars throughout central Edmonton, and now Camrose, taking short rentals for personal or business use.

Pogo offers a one-way car-sharing service in Edmonton and a back-tobase car sharing service in Camrose. Cars can be located, reserved and opened using the Pogo App. Customers only pay for the exact amount of time they use the vehicle. Gas, insurance, parking and maintenance are all included in the flat, per-hour rates.

Camrose and area residents joined in conversation about the growing need for rural transportation on Sept. 23 during the second annual Transportation Day hosted at University of Alberta Augustana Campus.

The Association for Life-wide Living (ALL) in partnership with Alberta Rural Development Network (ARDN) strive to develop affordable options for rural transportation and Transportation Day is part of the growing effort to bring stakeholders together to help find solutions.

Guest speaker Ranjit Tharmalingam, assistant deputy minister, Corporate Strategies and Services Division of the Ministry of Transportation relayed a message on behalf of Alberta Minister of Transportation Brian Mason.

“The Association for Life-wide Living (ALL) has worked hard to make this day happen. Events like this demonstrate what we can achieve when we all come together to collaborate with a shared vision.”

Tharmalingam went on to say how the coordinated efforts of governments, industry and transportation stakeholders is critical in addressing rural transportation needs.

“Provincial government recognizes the value of public transportation and how it makes life bet-

ter for Albertans by supplying safe, affordable and accessibility to essential services, education and jobs.”

In speaking on public transportation and rural bus systems, he added that services such as those provided by Battle River Region reach small towns and villages and contribute to the vitality of the Battle River Region by connecting residents to shopping medical appointments and to each other.

“Today we also have the opportunity to celebrate the new partnership between Augustana campus and Pogo.”

Pogo CarShare is an Edmonton based car-sharing service now offered at Augustana. “ The government of Alberta applauds the efforts it takes to launch this type of service and the provincial government also values the opportunities to collaborate with our regional partners on various projects and programs.

“As we work with communities such as Battle River region on projects and services currently underway, we also look forward to supporting their future vision of accessible and affordable and transportation for Albertans.”

Alia N TanJay opens doors

Residents of Camrose and area will now be able to enjoy the extensive line of fashion products offered

by Nygård at the new Alia N TanJay store located in the Cornerstone shopping district at 6800-48 Avenue.

During the grand opening held on Oct. 12, customers were greeted by Camrose store manager Elizabeth Hauch and sales associates, along with the district manager Judith Wagner (originally from the Camrose area) and three store managers from other locations.

“We were noticing a lot of customers in the Edmonton and Sherwood Park stores who were so wanting us to come to Camrose,” said Wagner.

“We are so happy to be here. It has been really exciting for us to see the welcoming that we have been getting over that last few days with our soft opening and today with the grand opening.

“We are hoping that we will fill that niche that we wanted to fill here in the Camrose market.”

Wagner said the Nygård company had been

looking for about six to seven months for the right location in Camrose.

“We had been hearing in the Edmonton market that there hadn’t been a big presence of the Alia, TanJay product since Lou’s left.”

The store will be bringing in new lines as well, hoping to target the 30-years plus customers.

“We are bringing our clientele a newness, a little bit more on-trend products to the store. We still have the products for the little bit more mature customer that wants that easy wear, but we also want to attract new customers into the store.”

As customers came through the doors, Judith remarked on the different dynamics already noticeable in the Camrose store versus the larger city stores. “I have noticed people are coming in who know each other. So, they are meeting their friends here.”

In a bright, modern store, Camrose and area customers have been given another opportunity to shop local.

The automotive section of

Trach brothers truck honours past owners, family

This 1985 Chevrolet truck holds special memories for several generations.

“Robin had the truck redone before he passed,

by Dean Klein. It truly was something he was so excited about! Robin (my husband) was a big family man and two of his brother’s owned the truck before they passed,” explained Connie Trach.

“When my uncle purchased the truck it had 472 kilometres on it. The truck was a demo, so it was practically brand new when he bought it in Calgary,” informed his son Dan. “He drove it until he passed away in the early 90s. Then my uncle Ray had it after that and drove it until 1998 when he passed.”

The C10 Silverado truck sat on his acreage for a number of years before being rescued.

“Then Robin wanted to buy it from his sister-inlaw. So, about three years ago he purchased the truck,” recalled Connie.

“It needed some work.

New box sides were put on, the tail gate was redone, all of the chrome trim was fixed,” added Dan. “Most of it was in good shape and it only had 112,000 original kilometres on it. The motor has never been worked on.

The interior was almost mint, like it was brand new. It is fully loaded for the day, like a Cadillac. It has air, cruise, tilt, power windows and locks.”

In 1985, hydraulic clutches were introduced, as well as a new grill. The 1985 body styling had a boxy look with roomy, spacious cabs. The body style was called the “rounded line” and had not significantly changed since 1973.

All three of the previous owners are gone, so the truck was passed on to son Dan. “I don’t have any words for what it means to me. This truck is something I treasure and want to keep in the family. It is pretty special,” he said proudly. “I’m going to keep it original because that is what dad would

have wanted. I’m going to enjoy it and if I don’t have a family, I know my nephew Jase (four years old) would drive it one day.”

Robin will be honoured with a cruise day.

“My two children and I are planning on going for a spin on the first anniversary of Robin’s death, which is today, Oct 17,” shared Connie.

“I added a licence plate that says Brothers 3 on it to tribute the brothers that owned the truck. My dad had one in front that said Brothers.

My dad was so excited about this truck, he was like a little kid,” Dan said.

“I had it appraised for insurance purposes and you could have bought it new for $12,300. It was appraised at $16,000 now because everything is still original.”

Robin favoured the Chevrolet models. “If it

didn’t have a bow tie on it, he didn’t like it.

The trim packages during 1985 had changed.

The basic, Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale and Silverado trim packages remained.

Some options included power brakes, power steering, power door locks, power windows, fully chromed bumpers, cigarette lighters, map lights, special moldings and a custom steering wheel. During this era more plastics and vinyl were used on the seat covers, carpeting and paneling.

The body styling ran from 1973 to 1987 and was the second longest unchanged styling (second only to Dodge, which did not change the style of the Dodge from 1969 to 1991). During this time some things were changed, including the grilles, trim packages and engines.

“I wash it all of the

time in the summer and polish it. I try not to drive it much in the winter,” Dan said.

Stolen car found abandoned at church on Sunday October 8

A stolen vehicle was found abandoned at a church in Kingman. The vehicle was stolen from a residence in Camrose County about a week earlier.

October 6

A red Ford F150 was stolen from a residence along Range Road 212 northwest of Camrose. An SUV stolen out of Edmonton was left at the property.

The SUV is believed to be

involved in an attempted Break and Enter and fled from police earlier in the day.

October 5

A suspicious vehicle was reported driving and parked in New Norway.

The vehicle was described as being a dirty white pickup truck. With numerous thefts in Camrose County lately, Camrose RCMP are encouraging residents to report suspicious people/ vehicles.

Police received a complaint of a large party at the Ross’ Flats Campground. A party with approximately 50 to 60 youth were present and departed without incident.
