Roughly 23,900 people will be thrilled with what they are about to read.

Unfortunately, everyone else banks elsewhere. Vision Credit Union member-owners will be getting a very attractive member bonus in early December. How nice?

How will this profit share allocation work? It’s very simple. 25% of the interest you paid on loans or a mortgage will be returned to you in the form of profit share. Also, 25% of interest you have earned on deposits will be returned to you. You will see your share of the profit allocated to your common share account in early December.

Well, how does

25% sound?

I bank elsewhere. How do I become a member and start sharing in the profits of Vision Credit Union?

Vision has had yet another outstanding year and now we are returning an amazing profit share to our member-owners.

Again, it’s simple. Drop in to any of our 16 branches. Transferring your deposits and investment accounts or applying for loans is quick and easy. You can become a member-owner for just $1.

What do you mean by handsome cash bonus being paid annually? Each fall, the Vision Credit Union Board of Directors declares a Profit Share to all members. This means a percentage of the total amount you have in your common share account will be given back to you in cash. In recent years, the Board has authorized a 10% annual payout to members. That’s often enough money for new appliances, a great vacation or enough money to pay off routine bills or credit cards.

Where members matter most. www.visioncu.ca

Is Vision Credit Union a full-service financial institution?

Absolutely! Your money (regardless of amount) on deposit is 100% guaranteed. We offer loans for anything you need to buy: vehicles, farm equipment, real estate, business ventures, etc. We have specialists who can provide excellent investment advice and financial products. Even U.S. deposit accounts, safety deposit box service, etc.

After all these years, why haven,t I become a member of Vision Credit Union?

You tell us. There’s never been a better time to make the switch. Nearly 24,000 of our members are a lot more excited than you right now. Hope to see you soon! How’s tomorrow sound? Become a member-owner today.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson No problem

My friend, business coach and frequent role model Sandra Martini has given me permission to share this story she sent me. The story from Sandra While walking back to my car from a new-in-town grocery store the other day, I saw what appeared to be a tiny house with a deck on top in the bed of an old pickup truck. Personally, I love watching the “Tiny House” shows and couldn’t resist asking the owner about his as he put his groceries inside. He lit up, shook my hand, introduced himself as “Julian.” Here’s a quick summary of two years ago. Warning – it almost sounds like a country song: His wife managed the finances, stopped paying all bills with his name on them, moved her boyfriend in and changed the locks. His truck (used for work) was repossessed and he was served with divorce papers. With under $50 in his wallet, he lost his job, unable to commute the 35 miles. Homeless and jobless, he went to a “Labor Ready” (place where workers are hired for a day’s labor) daily and, after showing up consistently for two weeks without success, got a steady job. And last year: He financed an old pick-up truck from his boss and got the okay to take any unsellable excess vinyl siding from job sites. He used that vinyl siding to build a tiny house on the back of his pick-up while saving for an apartment. He got an apartment (now saving for a house) and turned his tiny house into a mobile recording studio and hires himself out as a DJ. The deck on top of his tiny house is used as scaffolding for two-story houses and he makes “house deposit money” replacing vinyl siding using the unsellable excess he gets from his regular job. And today? He’s working on a non-profit deal with some churches to use their land and his vinyl siding to build tiny houses for the homeless and credits his faith and consistently taking action, with his many successes. Sandra’s conclusion: “No matter where you are in life or business, there is always hope, especially when paired with consistent action.” What problem? In the minutes before I read that story, I’d been thinking about something I thought was a problem. After I read the story, I couldn’t remember what the problem was. A day later, as I’m writing this, I still can’t remember! Three thoughts came to me after I read the story. Anything I might wish to be different in my life is definitely a “first world problem” – an inconvenience or something that’s not my preference. Might even be a figment of my imagination. The things I wish were different in my life are absolutely within my power to do something about – if I’m willing to do so! Sometimes the solution to what I perceive to be a problem is an attitude adjustment. And then I was flooded with gratitude for the blessings in my life – including that I have the luxury of time and space and safety even to think about stuff like this! Three quotes “The best years of your life are the ones in which you decide your problems are your own. You do not blame them on your mother, the ecology, or the president. You realize that you control your own destiny.” ~ Albert Ellis “I know God will not give me anything I can’t handle. I just wish God didn’t trust me so much.” ~ Mother Teresa “Problems are not stop signs, they are guidelines.” ~ Robert H. Schuller *** If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com

The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Bullying

The act of bullying has shown up in various places. It has shown up at school, the work place, the play-

ground and now in the legislature. There are so many bad attitudes towards different types of people. People are all human beings. Therefore all people should be treated with respect no matter who they are. Whether they are women, men, gay, or transsexual. Now, we may not all agree with each other. Some feel that women should not be in politics. Others feel that others should not be gay. Still others feel that it is okay to treat those who do not agree with them with disrespect. However, it is never okay to disrespect anyone.

This is a society social problem. As long as we, as a society, look the other way and allow those who disrespect these people to do so in silence; we are just as much at fault as those who do the acts of being disrespectful. We all have to act and to stand up to those who disrespect others. It is all of our responsibility to act and to stand up against disrespect. I just would like to encourage all of us to be faithful and protect the rights of those who need to be protected. Lorne W.P Vanderwoude, Camrose

Kinettes ask for Silent Santa support The economy has not been kind to Albertans and Christmas will be even harder for some this year. The Camrose Kinette Club is stepping up to the plate ready to offer gifts for those in need. Authors of Boom and Bust: A Guide Managing ups and downs to western Canadian communities as they gather to share their efforts to understand boom and bust cycles in western communities. The authors will be available to answer questions regarding the research and possible ways forward for communities, outlined within the book. The event takes place at The University of Alberta, Augustana Campus in the Epp Room on the second floor of the Forum at 10 a.m. on Dec. 2. Boom and Bust: A Guide Managing ups and downs to western Canadian communities is the result of a collective effort at the University of Alberta to better understand the dramatic ups and downs which too often characterize western Canadian communities. It offers community leaders, politicians, administrators, academics, students, and all active citizens helpful techniques to analyze the current state of their own community, to understand how it got where it is today, and ultimately, to identify possible ways forward. This helpful and accessible guide encourages analysis of historical paths and policy contexts to better understand what strategies might work or what strategies are not working in a community. The book is written and edited by Kristof Van Assche, Leith Deacon, Monica Gruezmacher, Robert J. Summers, Stephane Lavoie, Kevin Edson Jones, Michael Granzow, Lars Hallstrom and John Parkings. It was published by the University of Alberta faculty of extension, with support from the City-Region Studies Centre and Kule Institute for Advanced Study. The mission of the Alberta Centre for Sustainable Rural Communities (ACSRC) is to link research, outreach and educational capacity of the University of Alberta with students, researchers, rural communities, rural community organizations and policy makers at multiple levels across the province, nationally, and internationally in order to support the improved sustainability of rural communities and populations.

Troubled bridge over Mirror Lake water By Lori Larsen

City of Camrose administration presented to council information regarding the scope and proposed budget for the 48th Avenue bridge replacement project during the committee of whole meeting held on Nov. 7. City of Camrose director of engineering Jeremy Enarson provided council with a detailed inspection report from Associated Engineering. The inspection on the bridge was completed on Oct. 19 because of concerns raised by council during a committee of whole meeting held on Sept. 19. The report on the inspection concluded the bridge is nearing the end of its life and that it should be replaced within the next five years. Seven versus five

The layout of the proposed project would see seven lanes versus the now five lanes. “The decision to go from five lanes to seven lanes was decided on during the early stage of the process,” said Enarson. “In the Transportation Master Plan we determine where we have constraints on our roadway network and where we should add additional lanes and intersections. In 2007, the plan determined that within 10 to 20 years of city growth the section between 51 and 53 Street was going to be reaching capacity, therefore we needed to do some capacity improvements through there.” Traffic interruption

Council made inquiries into the impact of a partial versus full closure during construction. Enarson explained, “Non-local traffic will be encouraged to use 68 Street and Camrose Drive to completely bypass the city. The portion between 53 and 51 Street would be completely shut down for six months and over width vehicles would have to find alternate routes.” Enarson also said temporary measures may have to be taken at some intersections such as changing

traffic lights and appropriately placed signage to warn and divert traffic. Councillor Agnes Hoveland questioned as to what time of the year the construction would transpire. Enarson responded. “Ideally for full closure alternative routes would have to be finalized first. The job would be tendered in the spring (2017) and some of the preliminary work done in later spring months prior to full closure in order to get past the busier summer months. Once we get into September we would look at full closure and going ahead as quickly as possible to do a lot of the earth work component while there are still frost free conditions.” Discussion between administration and the management of Wild Rose Co-op came to a consensus on a full closure of 48th Avenue. The Co-op south driveway will remain open during a portion of the construction to allow traffic exiting from the gas bar to make a left turn (going east only). New shoreline

Council raised concerns about the impact on the lake of a grade change and the construction of a pedestrian underpass. By adding a pedestrian underpass the sidewalk on the backside of the Wildrose Co-op store would be extended a little bit further out into the lake. “The new pedestrian underpass would be slightly west of where the existing sidewalk connects,” said Enarson “The trail on the north side would be kept at a little lower so it would go under the roadway and join up by the seated area on the other side. “In order to allow the pedestrian who is coming down the sidewalk at a high elevation (on the north side) to get to the underpass we would build a cloverleaf out into the lake. So the pedestrians would go out a bit sloping down and eventually underneath the roadway to join up on the south side.” Enarson also indicated

the steps would be removed (south side) and the trail smoothed out in order to accommodate wheelchairs, bikes, strollers and skateboards. “Flattening the slopes, adding another lane, changing the grade and adding a cloverleaf to the pedestrian sidewalk will each have an effect on pushing the shoreline out.” Enarson also stated that even without the addition of a grade change and pedestrian underpass, there would be impact on the lake on both the north and south sides of the existing roadway. Changing the grade

Guidelines for building roadways are outlined by the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC). According to Enarson the current grade going down is steeper than what TAC recommends for an urban arterial divided roadway. The recommended maximum grade would be three per cent. “Right now we are exceeding three per cent on a good portion of that and at the most it is about 6.5 per cent. Councillor Ma x Lindstrand inquired as to whether the grade change would affect safety. “It is less likely that a vehicle is going to start spinning when a red light turns green,” said Enarson. “There will be

smoother operation and there will be a slight safety improvement as well.” Decision

During the Nov. 21 regular council meeting council members voted on separate motions regarding the 48th Avenue bridge replacement project. Prior to the vote some council members expressed their concerns with the inclusion of the pedestrian underpass. Councillor Wayne Throndson felt the underpass was a “want” not a “need” and that monies used to fund the underpass could be used otherwise. “When I say the underpass is a $1.8 million underpass, I say that because the underpass was the motivation and the inclination (grade change) is a result. “I don’t think the grade inclination is a safety issue. From the diagrams that we viewed this afternoon the actual affect will not be that great. “The concerns I have in addition to the cost is the effect on the lake. This tunnel, and I hesitate to call it a walkway, of about 100 some odd feet, in my opinion has aesthetic issues, maintenance issues and I think that it will be a great mural for graffiti. What this will become as time goes on worries me.” Councillor Greg Wood and PJ Stasko also voiced their opposition to the addition of the pedestrian underpass and grade change. Councillor Bill Sears indicated he was originally opposed to the pedestrian underpass and grade change. “I was opposed on two issues – one was the impact on the lake and the second was the impact spending these dollars would have on future projects we would like to do.” Sears indicated he changed his position after hearing information provided by administration indicating that the impact on the lake would mostly

be a result of the change to seven lanes and putting in the slopes and that funding for it will not have an impact on other major projects. Council members voted in favour of the 48th Avenue bridge replacement project to include the replacement of the existing five lane roadway across Mirror Lake with a new seven lane roadway bridge. In a second amended motion, council voted in a 6-3 (in favour) vote to proceed with the 48th Avenue bridge replacement project to include raising 48th Avenue to reduce the grade of the roadway and permit the installation of a pedestrian underpass. In a third motion, council voted in favour to finalize the design and traffic accommodation plan for the 48th Avenue bridge replacement project to include a full closure of 48 Avenue between 53 Street and a location approximately 50 metres west of 51 Street, to facilitate the exiting of vehicles from the Wild Rose Co-op south exit for the majority of the project duration. Also, it was voted to open the median to allow for exiting vehicles to make a left hand turn to head east. Funding

Funding for the 48th Avenue bridge replacement project will come from provincial grants, reserves and transportation off-site levies (funds collected from prior and future developers to help a municipality pay for required infrastructure upgrades related to growth). Enarson noted the monies used to fund the bridge project will not have an impact on other major capital projects, including the replacement or expansion of the City’s public works facility and the Aquatic Centre.

Camrose Now! broke the story of Camrose City Council’s decision to replace the bridge on 48 Avenue and include a pedestrian underpass. Here are comments on this topic submitted to the Forum button on the Camrose Now! app: • New bridge with an underpass? Multi-millions? What does this mean? Money continues to grow on trees in Camrose. How lucky we are!

a long way off. Two new arts facilities, a grandiose rink, overbuilt City Hall, but a pool that probably should be bulldozed. • Best Before Date of Bridge – Engineers suggest the Mirror Lake bridge will be obsolete in five years. So why are we replacing it next year? Is it truly ready to fall into the sea?

• The Mirror Lake Bridge – Is Council discussing a north-south bridge across Mirror Lake? That’s what we really need rather than a new multi million bridge going east to west. Thank you. • Is a “Multi-Million” Dollar Bridge our biggest need? Why is that a safer pool for Camrose never becomes top priority? We seem to find funding for everything but a pool. • New bridge with a walkway? Surely you can’t be serious. Could we not get our existing streets fixed first? Has anyone from the palace driven the streets of Victoria Park lately? • Bridge over muddy waters – If Council has decided that we must have a new bridge with 7 lanes of traffic this surely means that the lake will be drained for the construction season. Would this be a logical time to dredge the swamp? A deeper pond may mean cleaner water in the future. • Two more lanes of bridge traffic – If the engineering experts have decided we need a new bridge who are we to challenge them? But why in the world do we need a 2-million-dollar pedestrian underpass? Bad decision. • Agree with comment about the pool – A bridge which will cost “millions” seems to suggest a new swimming pool remains

• If we need it, we need it – Why so much griping about a replacement bridge? If a team of experts in the field have declared the present structure unfit, there is not much to discuss. Bite the bullet and get the new one up and running. We have elected representatives to make these decisions. That’s the way it works.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Mother Leanne, Rhya (three-years-old), Isaiah (one-yearold) and Andrey Sokolov take time out of Midnight Madness shopping to read a book at Wisemen’s Way Bookstore.

• A new bridge – fine, but … do we honestly need to cut into that extraordinarily beautiful setting to allow two more lanes of traffic? Please don’t do that. Once gone, gone forever! • Less Bridge Traffic – Not clear on why a new bridge? Traffic or current condition? If it’s excess traffic let’s just vote the NDP back in. Traffic would then be one way. Out of town, as people pass through leaving the province. • Pedestrian Underpass – How comfortable will people be walking through a lonely, underground pedestrian underpass? This is money that need not be spent.

What do you get when you mix blues with rock music? A band called the 24th Street Wailers. Bailey Rock ‘n’ Blues series hosts the five musicians who originally met in music school. They share sounds from the freewheeling period in the 40s and 50s when the blues gave birth to rock and roll in black communities in major American cities. It comes from an age when showmanship mattered and the sax player, not the guitarist, attracted the girls. The 24th Street Wailers take the Bailey Theatre stage on Dec. 2 at 8 p.m. Led by Lindsay Beaver, this wild and crazy front woman is a singing drummer. This band is filled out by Michael Archer on upright bass, Marc Doucet on guitar, Jesse Whiteley on piano, and Jonny Wong on wailing sax. This band has been winning over the masses with their unbeatable live performances. Tickets are available online at www.baileytheatre. com/tickets, at the Bailey Box Office 5041-50 Street from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. or by phoning 780-672-5510.

Composers from other northern climes are also featured, including Norwegians Frode Fjellheim and Grete Pederson and Lithuanian Vytautas Miškinis. The Augustana Choir, Mannskor: Augustana’s Men’s Choir, and Sangkor Women’s Ensemble, are led by John Wiebe, conductor, Roger Admiral and Carolyn Olson piano, and Dennis Rusinak saxophone. The choirs have become known for their exquisite sound and attention to detail.

CHRISTMAS BANQUET FRIDAY, DEC. 9, 2016

By Murray Green

This trio fits right into the Homegrown series at the Bailey Theatre. Myra Marshall, Tom Lichak and Chad Szott offer audiences rich harmonies and soulful guitar with their favorite songs in country, roots, pop, rock and blues genres. “We all met playing for the Bailey Buckaroos. Tom and Chad played for The River Jacks and asked me to join them to make up the five piece band,” explained Myra. “Originally Tom and I thought we could perform as a duo, but we needed an extra guitarist, so we asked Chad to join us. We will sing a little bit of everything including country, Christmas songs and some original songs that I wrote. About half will be new songs but, because it will be December, we want to perform some Christmas songs.” The three members of The River Jacks are taking a time out to bring you a more intimate show at the Bailey on Thursday, Dec. 1 at 8 p.m. “We like to include some top 40 songs in our regular band. This time I picked out some Nana Mouskouri songs because it reminded me as a child of the album that everyone’s parents had. We picked some songs that are more meaningful to us,” shared Myra. “The theme is songs that we like performing and have meaning to us.” Playing in front of local fans is something the band wants to do on a regular basis. “It is exciting to play at the Bailey Theatre. It is great to have the venue in Camrose and the people to support it too. “The Bailey is one of my favourite places to play in and Tom has mentioned the same thing. It has great sound and the fact that we can play in a cool building with a lot of history like that makes it special,” she said. “The nice thing about the more intimate shows is that you can have more interaction with the audience. The Bailey is the perfect size for that intimate interaction and you don’t feel it always has to be go, go, go. It is a chance for the audience to get to know us too.” Myra sees the concert as a way to expand her opportunities. “Besides the band,

Sugar & Spice Tom and I have played as a duo for about two years. This allows us to play as dinner entertainment and at functions that don’t require a full band. Adding Chad gives us even more options and it keeps us busy, especially in December. We have no plans for the band breaking up. We have bookings from March to October already for next year, so it is looking good for us to be busy.”

Myra started singing in about Grade 8 and has joined bands since she was 18. “I’m excited to be really busy with music again.” Tickets are available online at www.baileytheatre. com/tickets, at the Bailey Box Office, 5041Street, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 3 to 5 p.m. or by phoning 780-672-5510.

Christmas on a budget By Lori Larsen

It seems many people these days are tightening the purse strings and this time of year tends to have a bigger impact on household budgets. The following are a few tips to assist in saving money and still enjoy a happy holiday season. Begin by establishing a budget for the holiday season. Divide your budget among gifts, entertainment, food and drink, decorating, travel and a contingency fund. It is important to stay on your budget so you don’t feel overwhelmed after the season is over and if need be, borrow from one area to give to another but at all costs avoid going over. Suggest a secret Santa gift exchange, limiting not only the amount of gifts to give but the spending amount. Find alternatives to gift giving such as gift exchanges, recycling or reusing gifts, handmade or homemade gifts or a gift of time or services such as snow shovelling, babysitting or pet walking. Start early by putting a little money aside for the holiday season or shopping early. Buy items when they are on sale and set them

aside, but remember it is not a bargain unless you really needed it. Cut down on decorating, recycle older decorations with crafty ideas, use natural decorations such as branches trimmed from your trees. While we all love Christmas lights and the joy they bring the cost can add up on utility bills. To avoid extra costs have your lights on a timer or turn them on only on the weekends or special evenings. Use what you have, not what you don’t have. Avoid using credit. Many people suffer from stress after the holiday season as a result of over extending credit. Send out a holiday email or Facebook message to help reduce the costs of mailing cards. Celebrate the holiday feasts and parties with potluck. This still allows for household get-togethers but cuts down the cost for the host/hostess, not to mention it is a wonderful way to add variety to your menu. Finding inexpensive ways to enjoy family and friends will help make the holidays a little brighter and reinforce what this season is truly all about, the spirit of love.

BRCF gives to Augustana

The Battle River Community Foundation awarded a grant of $1,900 to Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta to support the development of the Luther and Florence Olson Welcome Centre in Founders’ Hall. The grant is from income from the Dianne Johnson Memorial Fund. The fund was established by LeRoy Johnson as a donor advised fund, allowing him to recommend projects for funding that reflect Dianne’s interests. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects, such as this, in East Central Alberta which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. In loving memory of

Alban Percy Soucy 1936 ~ 2011 You can shed tears that he is gone, Or you can smile because he lived. You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back, or you can open your eyes and see all that he has left. Your heart can be empty because you can’t see him, Or you can be full of the love that you shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday, Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember him and only that he is gone, Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on. You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back, Or you can do what he would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on. – Your wife Gisele and family In loving memory of

August 21, 1926 ~ November 5, 2016 Joyce Vernell Church of Camrose passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at the age of 90 years. Mom was born on August 21, 1926 in Wausa, Nebraska, the fifth child of ten to Wallace and Ethel Lindberg. She was “carried” to Canada when she was six months old. Her parents settled in the Camrose area where she lived her entire life. Mom attended New Salem School from grades one to eight and then went to Camrose High School followed by Mount Royal College in Calgary where she took a physical education course. On November 24, 1950, Joyce married Leonard. They eventually settled on their farm south of Camrose where they raised their family of four … Carol, Rodney, Martha and Ann. The family was active in the Camrose Fair, 4-H, Daresbury Community, Old Timers’ Association and were members of Bethel Lutheran Church. Upon moving, Mom enjoyed various activities in Camrose including floor curling, bowling and walking the trails around Mirror Lake. Mom is lovingly remembered by her children: Carol Malmas, Rodney Church (Carol), Martha Zimmer (David) and Ann Church; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Shamin Malmas (Andy Melson); Sean Malmas (Paul Tolnai); Kathleen Bradford (Craig), James and Mel; Tara Connelly (Shane), Brycen, Jacob and Charlotte; Stephanie Amstutz (David), Emerson Dallas; Amanda Zimmer (Carl Zelensky), Everett, Chloe and Abigail; Shauna Felzien (Jason), Caleb and Marcus; Sarah Buchholz (Nicholas), Ella; Larissa McNabb (Bobby); Corbin Carey; Alex Carey … and two more greatgrandchildren on the way. She is also survived by her siblings: Roxanne Buskas (Nels), Rodney Lindberg (Eileen), Carol Lindballe (Frank) and Margaret Hermanson (George); brother-in-law Jack Walters; and many nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by her husband Leonard in 1987; son-in-law Bruce Malmas in 2009; three brothers; and two sisters. She will be remembered by her family and friends for her smile, her confidence, her optimism, strong will, and love and admiration for her family. We will also remember her for the drawer of dishcloths and handcrafted colorful knit socks. Mom handled her life well, accepting change as she aged gracefully. A Funeral Service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 from Bethel Lutheran Church with Rev. Debora Ann Taylor officiating. If family and friends desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to Spinal Muscular Atrophy B.C. Chapter (103 – 7134 Vedder Road, Chilliwack, BC V2R 4G4), St. Mary’s Hospital Palliative Care, or to the Hospice Society of Camrose and District. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com. The family of Joyce Church would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses on Unit 4 at St. Mary’s Hospital and to Dr. Hilderman for the kindness, support, special care and compassion shown to Mom and her family. Thank you to the staff of Rosalta and Stoney Creek Lodges for their care given to Mom; and to Pastor Deborah Ann Taylor and Murray Cowan for their friendship, guidance and meaningful service. Thank you to the ELW ladies for the abundant lunch, and to Cam Parker for your caring, professional manner. To all who visited Mom when she was hospitalized, attended her memorial service, sent cards and donations, brought food to our homes, and gave us a shoulder to lean on, thank you for your support. – Carol, Rod, Martha, Ann and Families

Think You’ve Heard It All?

Can anyone be a Philanthropist?

ABSOLUTELY!

Philanthropy is a marvelous quality that each of us has inside. It’s a generosity of spirit, a desire to help, and a firm belief that you can make a real difference in your community regardless of how much or how little you have to give.

Shane and Shauna Ashton, philanthropists, have the spirit. They are shown in conversation with Vivianne Grue, Chairman of the Battle River Community Foundation. Both Ashtons grew up in Camrose and feel fortunate to have done so. They appreciate that the community has been good to them and now they are compelled to give something back. Following the examples set by others whom they respect, they have chosen to accomplish this through the Community Foundation. They like the fact that their contributions here

will keep working in this community forever. Both Shauna and Shane agree that each of us has a moral obligation to pay it forward and in doing so they feel that they have become more a part of the community.

executive director, Joel French. “Private, nonprofit organizations and forprofit corporations simply spend fewer dollars on care for residents.” The Alberta NDP’s 2015 election platform committed to building 2,000 public long-term care beds during their term. Public beds in Alberta are operated by Alberta Health Services, Carewest, and Capital Care. One and a half years into the government’s term, none of the promised public beds

have been built, or even announced. “The clear course of action for the government should be to immediately begin following through on their promise to build 2,000 public long-term care beds,” added French. It is widely speculated the lack of progress on the government’s commitment is due to Alberta’s current dire fiscal situation, highlighted by a drop in resource revenues of more than $10.3 billion.

Step carefully in the winter By Colleen Lindholm, Camrose Primary Care Network

As people age, the risk of falling and becoming injured in those falls greatly increases. Falling while outdoors, especially in the winter months, is a serious health and safety concern. Falls can result in injuries that limit your ability to move and to remain active and independent. It’s important to be aware the ground is going to be more slippery in the winter, and for you to take early precautions to help prevent falling. Wearing the right shoes or boots for the weather is the single most important thing you can do to stay safe when walking outside. Boots with rubber soles and non-slip treads are best. Shoe grippers or traction cleats are another excellent idea. Falls prevention isn’t just about stopping falls before they happen. It’s about continuing to enjoy life’s simple moments; it’s about playing

with your grandchildren and keeping active with friends and family. Most of all, falls prevention is about keeping your independence. MyHealthAlberta.ca has some great Winter Walking Tips to help reduce your risk of falling this winter; focus on trying to keep your balance; walk flat-footed and point your toes slightly out to make yourself more stable; walk slowly and take small steps or shuffle your feet on icy paths; keep your head up and don’t lean forward; keep your hands out of your pockets to help keep your balance; avoid rushing and doing too many things at once – plan ahead. For information, contact eithertheCamrosePCNat780608-4927 and ask about the Fall Prevention Program. You can also visit www. camrosepcn.com/STOPfalls to learn more.

Talk to us today about the benefits of pre-planning funeral arrangements. The idea of advance funeral planning is one which many people would rather not think about. Seasonal Affective Disorder By Shelley Heck

As many of 20 per cent of the world’s population is affected with Seasonal Affective Disorder. Typically northern regions such as Alberta, Canada are affected. Female SAD sufferers outnumber males by as much as 300 per cent. Symptoms include poor or low energy levels, listlessness, cravings for sweets and carbohydrates and weight gain. As days grow shorter, and daylight becomes less in late fall and winter Seniors may experience symptoms of SAD. Symptoms vary from person to person as does the degree of debilitation. For most people the symptoms are mild to moderate and for a select few more severe. More debilitating symptoms include problems sleeping, difficulty getting up in the

morning, lack of concentration and changes in memory. If SAD is left untreated it can lead to pessimistic feelings of hopelessness, lack of pleasure and fulfillment and possible depression. The senior population may be at increased risk for SAD due to restricted mobility, residential facility living, isolation and the recent death of a loved one. Simple changes in one’s environment and daily routine can make a big difference in coping with SAD symptoms. Here are some helpful hints. Let in as much natural light as possible by opening curtains and blinds during the day. Exercise regularly, approximately 20 to 30 minutes three times a week is recommended. Kupka grew up watching Kodiaks excel By Murray Green

Kyler Kupka grew up near Hay Lakes and played his minor hockey in Camrose. With each game he played as a youngster, he dreamed of playing for the junior Camrose Kodiaks. He often watched the Kodiaks and soaked in every move they made. Now local minor hockey players look up at him. “Joining the Kodiaks was a great decision. I like to think of myself as a good two-way forward, but I like to help put some points on the board,” said Kyler. “It means a lot to play on this team. I grew up always wanting to be a Kodiak. It’s like a dream come true.” The other part of the dream is to help the Kodiaks be a contender for the championship. “I think we have a good team, we just had a slow start. We are right up their with the better teams. The recent trades have helped us improve. We won every trade,” said Kyler. “We need to keep it going. We have competed with the top teams, often losing by a goal. Now we have to keep improving and win those games. Now we are a better team and we will be looking to beat the better teams.” The Kodiaks offer a different look since several trades have taken place. “They (new players) have helped us a ton. They are

very skilled guys, some of the top guys in the league.” The Camrose Kodiaks found themselves down 2-0 to the Okotoks Oilers when the team decided to shift gears on offence. Camrose fought back with goals from Colin Schmidt and Zach Vinnelli in the middle frame to knot the game at 2-2. Both squads tightened up the defence in the scoreless third period to force overtime. “We played well enough, but sometimes it doesn’t go your way. We have to keep working hard and eventually we will get the bounces,” said Kyler, on the close contest. “You always want to get two points, especially against a south division opponent. Getting one is better than none.” Okotoks seized their opportunity in overtime to skate away with the victory. The Kodiaks took the muchneeded single point in the close southern division. Goalie Patrick Gora made 34 of 37 saves to keep the Kodiaks in the contest. “We are still working on our special teams in practice. Moving the puck around better, quicker on the power play will help us get some key goals and help us win some hockey games,” added Kyler, a Grade 12 student. Camrose snuffed out the Drumheller Dragons in a 5-2 game on Nov. 18. Ryan Hartman opened

the scoring in the first and two minutes later Drumheller tied the game. In the second, Bryson Traptow scored a shorthanded marker with help from Kyler Kupka. The Dragons garnered the equalizer 46 seconds later, but Nic Correale pulled the Kodiaks back into the lead before the period ended. In the third, Alex Mowbray and Schmidt scored to secure the third straight win for Camrose. Gora turned away 24 of 26 shots directed his way. Camrose fired 26 shots at the Drumheller net. The last home game of the month is on Nov. 29 with the Calgary Canucks providing the opposition. The Canucks are back here on Dec. 3.

The Camrose Kodiaks block out Okotoks players from getting to the net during a scramble. Kyler Kupka and the Kodiaks are concentrating on generating more offence.

Augustana runners compete at nationals By Joedy Dalke

JUNIOR VOLLEYBALL

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Charlie Killam School boys Jeron Auerbach, front, Camrin Soosay, left, and Anders Bouck are ready to block and defend an attack from New Norway at the Camrose junior high volleyball tournament. Both teams reached the semifinals before being eliminated. Below, Charlie Killam School girls set the volleyball against New Norway at the Camrose junior high volleyball tournament, Nov. 4 and 5. New Norway won the semifinal match to advance to the final.

Did you know that crosscountry runners only touch the ground 25 per cent of the time? That leaves them airborne 75 per cent of the time, so if the race is 8 km they’re actually flying for 6 km! Now that you know that, I will tell you that a fine fleet of Augustana runners took flight over Crimson Ridge Golf Course in Sault St. Marie ON, Nov. 12. Despite the blistering pace over the first kilometre, Vikings Matt Martin, Joedy Dalke, Bryce Turner and Reece Bailey overtook runner after runner, passing as many as 40 runners over the 8 km course. The final placings were 38, 41, 75 and 92 respectively out of a deep field. While all these runners destroyed personal best times by more than 30 seconds each, it was Camrose native Michael Cole who showed the

true grit of the Vikings. At 5 km, Michael rolled his ankle, spraining it so badly he slowed to a mere hobble. Rather than drop from the race, Michael resolved to finish what he started, and grimaced his way to the end, laying down an epic Viking finish. With Michael slowed from his ankle, Reece Bailey stepped up and had the race of his life to secure a 13th place team result for 2016. Matt and Joedy ran a smart race, leading the Vikings. Graduating runners were thanked for their dedication to the Vikings over the past years, which included Reece Bailey, Michael Cole, Sasha Eccleston and Brianna Schultz. We are excited for next fall when we hope to bust into the top 10 at nationals and continue to impress here in Alberta. The hard work starts now.

Safe Driving Week reminds motorists to prepare for winter By Murray Green

Although the area has had a mild winter so far, it is time to prepare for the cold months ahead. Winter brings the usual chores of shovelling the driveway, scraping ice off the windshield and bundling up before leaving the house. It is also time to make sure your vehicle is ready for the season. National Safe Driving Week (Dec. 1 to 7) and the Canada Safety Council wants to remind Canadians to winter-proof their

vehicles to make any driving they may do become easier, safer and more reliable. One of the most beneficial preventative measures you can take is to install winter tires on your car. Get four tires that are suitable for your vehicle, paying special attention to the mountain/snowflake symbol on the side to indicate that they conform to winter tire standards. Don’t wait for a huge snowfall to make the change. Winter tires should be installed

when the ambient temperature drops below 7 C. This is when the rubber in all-season tires hardens and starts losing the grip it offers. According to the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada’s Winter Tire Report, only half of Canadian motorists (not counting Quebec where winter tire use is mandatory according to provincial law) use winter tires, with 63 per cent of people surveyed incorrectly believing that all-season tires offer adequate braking power and traction for Canadian winters. In addition to the installation of winter tires, basic maintenance of your vehicle is also of critical importance before the winter months are in full swing. Make sure lights are all working properly. Replace any headlights, brake lights or other lights on your vehicle if they’re not in working condition. Especially in the winter, it’s important to see and be seen. Ensure you have a fully-charged battery. In cold weather, a depleted battery might not be enough to start your vehicle. Have your battery tested before cold weather hits and be proactive in changing it for a new one before the old battery fails. Know you’ll be able to stop safely. Winter tires are an important part of gaining traction when stopping, but you should also check that your brakes are working well. If they are squeaking, creaking, feel odd or seem to pull, get them serviced. Windshield wipers and washer fluid should be

working right. Replace any windshield wipers that are streaky, as any accumulation of snow or ice could make visibility much poorer. Also, fill up on winter windshield washer fluid (-35 C or -40 C) and keep a second jug in your vehicle at all times in case of emergency. Keep a brush and scraper in your vehicle. You never know when you might need to brush snow or scrape ice off your car. Be prepared for these eventualities and they won’t catch you by surprise. Consider keeping a flashlight, too, as the

extra light may prove useful on dark winter nights. The Canada Safety Council has a limited number of ice scrapers available for free to interested motorists. Email csc@ safety-council.org for more information. Driving in the winter always poses a new set of challenges to even the most experienced of drivers. Ensure that you’re well prepared to face the elements, leave yourself plenty of time and space to get stopped if necessary and, if possible, avoid driving in poor visibility bad weather conditions entirely.

FUNNY THING

Murray Green, Camrose Booster The cast of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to 5th Period share a hallway scene as they prepare for the Dec. 2 show at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. The cast from left to right, Anna White, Talayna Ekelund, Elizabeth Gilchrist, Angela Nagy, Sarah Tothe, Chevan MacKenzie, Alyssa Andrews, Kady Isner, LaVanica Brown, Angus Guglich and in front Kody Hynek prepare for prom night.

Our Lady of Mount Pleasant School students are presenting A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to 5th Period on Friday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. in the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. “We were looking for an end production for our drama class that we could perform. Since our class is only for three credits, we wanted to keep it smaller and easier to manage in terms of length and lines,” said Kody Hynek, one of the main characters in the play. “It takes place in a school hallway and we are still in school, so everyone could pick up on it. We had to come up with a cost effective play and the school setting was a good choice.” This short comedy by Jason Pizzarello is about high school students preparing for prom. To win his freedom from school bully Bugs, smart aleck Tommy offers to help him get a date to the prom with popular actress Stephanie Mezaluna. But the only way to get her attention is to convince her that Bugs is a famous actor in hiding, and as one cover-up leads to another, it’s not long before a jock, Steve, is parading as Bug’s slick New York agent, and Tommy is stuck trying to get Steve’s sister a date to the prom. Last year, the OLMP play was held in the school gym. “It’s more challenging this year because we have a big theatre to fill with tickets sold, instead of free admission in the gym,” said Kody. “It’s larger, so we have more space to work with. In that sense it is good. It is exciting to go to the theatre because I am into the whole performing arts scene. My ultimate goal is to go to the Toronto Film School for Directors. This play really helps with that progress.” Due to a staff leave at school, Susan Popik took over the drama class. “She was the drama teacher last year, so it was an easy transition for those of us who were in her class last year. It set some people back a little bit, especially those new to the drama class,” said Kody. “The people we have in the drama program are very dedicated, so that helped the play move forward. We also have a drama club for students and it is not just for high school students. It involves younger grades, so they can learn about drama and they have small parts as extras in the play. It is cool to get the younger students involved in drama.” Tickets are not available at the door. To purchase tickets visit the Lougheed Arts Centre website at www.camroselive. ca or call the Lougheed Box Office at 780-608-2922 Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

Peewee Buffaloes

Local players named all-stars By Murray Green

Former Camrose Composite High School Trojans football players Adam Kuntz and Jonathan Heidebrecht were named to the Atlantic University Sport all-star team. Kuntz posted 45.5 tackles, 30 of which were solo and he assisted on 31 others. He had three sacks, a fumble recovery and two interceptions. Heidebrecht made 17 of 24 field goal attempts in the regular season with his longest coming from 47 yards out. He made all 31 points after attempts and collected 82 points. The St. Francis Xavier X-Men university football team in Nova Scotia posted a record of 7-1 in league play before winning the conference to earn a semifinal match against the University of Calgary Dinos. The X-Men are the AUS Loney Bowl champions for the second straight year after a 29-8 victory over the Mount Allison Mounties.

Peewee Buffaloes win crown By Nathan Matson

The Camrose peewee Buffaloes captured their second consecutive Tier 4 football championship. This year’s squad excelled on the field during the 2016 campaign. Not only did they continue the winning tradition, the team did so in a remarkable way, going undefeated in with a perfect 8-0 record. On Nov. 6, the Buffaloes met the rival Wetaskiwin Warriors at Fuhr Park in Spruce Grove in the final game to crown champions. The match was set under the lights, with fog rolling across the playing field. A sight to be seen. This year’s band of brothers battled in a physical contest once again flexing their muscles on offence and defence. They were not to be denied with the final score 32-6. Making the Buffaloes successful in defending last year’s title. It takes hard work and dedication to develop a culture of winning, not only by the athletes, but by support from coaches, staff and parents alike. Thanks to everyone who contributed to making this season a success, especially those young athletes that have achieved greatness for the second season in a row. Next season’s team will have big shoes to fill as many of these players will move on to the bantam level. Congratulations Buffaloes on all of your achievements this year.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Lighting a tree with memories By Lori Larsen

As you drive west on 48th Avenue this season you cannot help but notice the tall tree that stands out front just east of the Bill Fowler Centre. The tree is lit, in memory of loved ones who have passed away, for the annual Lights to Remember

sponsored by the Hospice Society of Camrose and District. This year D-2 Electrical volunteered their services to string the lights and Burgar Funeral Home affixed the sign and supplied the flood lights. The Hospice Society of Camrose and District’s

mission is to enable the community to support those facing advancing illness, death and bereavement with dignity– through education and compassionate care. For more information visit the Hospice web page at www.camrosehospice. org.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster The large tree in front of the Bill Fowler Centre is once again lit up in memory of loved ones who have passed. Left to right are owner of D-2 Electrical Murray Erickson, Hospice Society of Camrose and District member Joy LeBlanc, Barry Fenby from Burgar Funeral Home, Hospice Society Wanita Toews, kneeling Rajan Rathnavalu and Janelle WallaceMeyer, Treva Olson, Bill Harder, and John Person from Burgar Funeral Home.

Central Agencies Home of the Week

Move-in ready bi-level

Matt Banack By Lori Larsen

Imagine being able to move into your new home without the worry of having to complete the basement or landscape the yard. This beautiful four bedroom, three bath bi-level located in the mature neighborhood of Century Meadows is close to parks and a playground. As you enter you will be impressed by the bright openness of the home and the vaulted ceilings and large bay windows in the front room. Throughout the home are display ledges and niches allowing for wonderful decorative focal points. The kitchen has plenty of cabinets and a centre island with a raised breakfast bar. Perfect for serving the children breakfast or using for buffets during family and friend get-togethers. Just off the kitchen is a delightful dinette flooded with natural light from the bay window and a garden door that leads out to your west facing deck partially covered with an aluminum deck awning. Completing the main floor is the master bedroom with walk-in closet and four-piece ensuite, two other bedrooms, a four-piece main bathroom and a conveniently located laundry room.

The basement development features good sized windows, accent lighting, decorative arches and columns which make this living area stylish and luxurious. The family room has a cozy fireplace ideal for family to cuddle up and watch movies. Just off the family room is a large games room area for those exciting pool matches. The basement area also includes another large bedroom, three-piece bathroom and plenty of storage room. The backyard is completely landscaped and fenced with maintenance-free chain link. There is back alley access and RV parking. Included in the purchase are the fridge, stove, dishwasher, washer, dryer, window coverings, and garage cabinets. This beautiful Century Meadows bi-level at 3206-64 Street is priced at $389,900. There will be an open house on Thursday, Dec. 1 from 1 to 3 p.m. For a personal viewing contact Matt Banack at: Central Agencies Inc. 4870-51 Street, Camrose 780-672-4495 or Matt cell 780-608-9733
