…which has just completed its annual 11,000 km spring trip from South America. Purple martins, over the past few days, have begun returning to their summer, condominium-style homes in Camrose and area. Scientists, and citizens alike, have been waiting patiently for the martins’ migration from their native Brazil. Keen eyes of martin “landlords” and volunteers are peeled watching for birds with bands on their right legs. Over the past three years remarkable research of an international scale and importance has been undertaken locally, involving this intriguing species of swallow. Captured martins have been outfitted with a “mini-backpack” which houses a geolocator device. It is now necessary to recapture the banded birds which have worn this special holder for a full year. Experts will then remove the geolocators and download the data on themm in order to learn more about the birds’ migration route and speed, and to reveal unique traits of the species. These birds will be released unharmed. New research from up to five mini-scientific devices deployed in 2014 and retrieved last July in Camrose will be revealed at the annual Purple Martin Festival in Camrose on Saturday, June 18th from 9:30 am – 3:00 pm at Stoney Creek Centre.

City taxes will increase By Lori Larsen

Camrose residents can expect tax assessments/ notices within the next few weeks. The 2016 tax rates were approved by City of Camrose council at the regular meeting held on May 2. The tax increase for a typical residential property owner will be 2.33 per cent and for a typical non-residential property owner will be 1.72 per cent. City of Camrose assessor Travis Lantz explained that some property owners will experience a little higher tax increase, while others may experience a little lower tax increase because there is only one rate of taxation which is based on the average property assessment. On Dec. 7, 2015 during a regular meeting council approved the 2016 operating budget, which included a tax levy requirement of $23,761,266, Camrose and Area Lodge Authority req-

uisition of $234,587. In addition to this a $7,181,829 provincial education requisition. The municipal taxes will increase by 2.53 per cent, education taxes increased by 3.9 per cent while the lodge taxes decreased by 27 per cent. Provincial legislation mandates the collection of taxes for the Camrose and Area Lodge Authority as well as the education requisition, neither of which is available for operations of the City of Camrose. “Some of the money on the tax bill goes towards these items,” said Lantz. “They are not controlled by council and not spent by council and the City doesn’t receive any payment towards the cost of collecting them.” Approximately 30 per cent of the average tax bill is distributed to other levels of government. Bottom Line

The effect of the increase on the typical residential

property owner is described on a sample home as follows. A property assessed at $275,000 in 2015 would be assessed in 2016 at $280,540, an increase of $5,540 or 2.01 per cent. The municipal levy in 2015 on this sample is $2,155 and in 2016 $2,209 an increase of $55 or 2.54 per cent. The education tax in 2015 is $662 and in 2016 $681 an increase of $19 or 2.93 per cent. The lodge tax in 2015 would be $29 and in 2016 $21 a decrease of $8 or -26.97 per cent. The final numbers would be 2015 taxes of $2,845 and in 2016 $2,911 an increase of $66 or 2.33 per cent. Assessment

Assessment on homes (5,133 detached homes excluding duplexes, condos, townhouses and mobile homes) in Camrose determined that 83 per cent increased between zero and five per cent. Continued on page 9

Railway station events By Dan Jensen

It’s shaping up to be a busy summer at the Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park. “We have a lot of interesting events and activities that have been planned for people of all ages,” said station chair Glenys Smith. “We hope to see a lot of people taking advantage of what we have to offer.” The station’s biggest project this summer will be the rebuilding of the Morgan Garden Railway. “We’ll be re-doing the wiring, ballast and relaying the track just as soon as the weather permits,” said Smith. “The goal is to have it up and running when we open on May 14.” The station is currently preparing its gardens, with

volunteers being asked to assist with pruning. “We welcome anyone who has an hour or two to become part of our volunteer team,” said Smith.” Opening day

The station will open for the summer on May 14, a little bit earlier than previous years. “We’re going to be offering self-serve refreshments in the King George Room, tours of our spring gardens, rides on our Percylike train, and the opportunity to do some shopping at the White Elephant gift shop,” said Smith. “The refreshments can be purchased throughout the season Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.” The station’s annual plant sale and swap on May

28 will provide the opportunity to purchase some of the perennials and flowers that grow within the station gardens or have been donated by community members, as well as various white elephant gardening pots and yard items. “We’re going to have a special workshop on flower pressing facilitated by Diana Nickel at 1 p.m. and those who attend will be able to go home with a framed picture and a card,” said Smith. The first major event of the summer will be Aboriginal Day June 21, featuring performances by Red Thunder The Next Generation, storytelling related to the aboriginal legends, and servings of bannock. “The dancers will be performing at three differ-

Community comes together to assist fire victims By Murray Green

More than 85,000 residents have been evacuated from their homes in Fort McMurray and the surrounding area in one of the largest fire evacuations in provincial history. Three hundred RCMP members from throughout Alberta have now been deployed to Fort McMurray to assist local detachment personnel in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s Emergency Operations. Individuals have had to quickly flee their homes, and are moving either north or south from the city, looking for shelter and other resources. The local community reached out with supplies for those affected by the devastating wildfires. The items were collected in three trailers and sent north on May 5 to assist with displaced residents. “Our thoughts and prayers are with those whose lives have been disrupted, or destroyed in the Fort McMurray area,” said David Drever of D and D Vehicle Sales and Leasing. Due to the demand, D and D offered a fourth trailer to give to people that have been evacuated to the Camrose Regional Exhibition campground. At press time, three families were staying at the campground, but more were expected. Wildrose Co-op operations manager Rick Stang presented the families with gift cards for groceries to stock the holiday trailers that were donated by volunteers and cards for clothes. Cashiers at all Wildrose Co-op locations are also asking customers at the till if they would like to donate to the victims of the fire that are in Camrose and area. If funds are left over, they will then pass the donations on to the Red Cross. Canada Safeway, Real Canadian Superstore and many of the retailers in Camrose are also collecting for the Red Cross. Several other businesses around the city are collecting at the cashier station to help the Canadian Red Cross Society. Many people are looking for ways to help and to lend a helping hand to those who have been evacuated. The very best way to offer assistance at this time is through cash donation. The City of Camrose has set up a drop-off point at City hall to send money to the Red Cross and then onto those needing assistance. A welcoming location was set up at the Aquatic Centre. “We will collect funds and send them in weekly to the Red Cross,” said Darren Lockhart at City Hall. “We don’t give receipts, we pass on the information to the Red Cross. If people don’t have the opportunity to drop

off during regular business hours, we have a mail slot at the front door as well.” Central Agencies owner Mayor Norm Mayer presented $1,000 to the Red Cross to launch the local dropoff service. Any donations received will be matched by the Alberta Government. His staff collected another $1,275 when they had to pay to wear jeans last Friday. James Mayer of Central Agencies matched what the staff donated. Lamb Ford also donated $1,000 to encourage other business to support the Red Cross. The car dealership will also match the funds generated by their employees, as well as $100 per vehicle sold during the month of May. Nick Bjornson of New Norway is challenging video gamers through a live stream from Marg’s Computers in Camrose (46-8-39 Street). The fund raiser page is set up at Canadahelps. org at: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/pages/gamingfor-the-red-cross-alberta-fire and his live stream itself will be hosted with Twitch. tv at this address: https:// www.twitch.tv/big3ars1989 and his gaming Name is Bigears1989. Tish’s Fashions and Finery will donate a prom dress to any Fort McMurray high school graduate that has relocated to Camrose. Purple martin expert Bob Buskas is donating funds from the sale of a 12 compartment house complete with installation. A group called Berta Boys and Berta Babes are going to be collecting items for those in need as well. Any donations can be dropped of at 4302-63 Street. Shelley Moch (with Credential at Vision Credit Union’s city centre branch) is planning a fundraiser barbecue on May 18. “The financial institutions in Camrose are volunteering to hold a barbecue for victims of the fire. We held a similar event during the Slave Lake fires a few years ago and we raised $1,800. We want to raise more this time for the Red Cross,” said Moch. The barbecue will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Vision Credit Union city centre branch and proceeds will go to victims of the Fort McMurray fire. For those who don’t have access to City Hall, Red Cross has set up a dedicated donation page at www.redcross.ca/ where money can be donated to those impacted by the wildfires. You can also text REDCROSS to 30333 to donate $5 for those impacted by the wildfires.

Murray Green, Camrose Booster D and D Vehicles Sales and Leasing staff and friends, back row from left to right, Shyla Barore, Kayla Woytowich, Austin Bruneau and David Drever. In front, from left, Chad Barore, Eric Kroetch and helper Jackson Drever filled three trailers full of clothes, blankets, food products, baby supplies, water, pet food and household items to take north to those who lost their homes in Fort McMurray due to the major fire.

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Central Agencies owner Norm Mayer, right, presented City of Camrose director of accounting and assessment Darren Lockhart at the City Hall office with $1,000 to go towards the Canadian Red Cross and onto the Fort McMurray fire victims. People can donate to the Red Cross by dropping funds at City Hall.

Eight per cent increased five to 10 per cent, three per cent increased 10 per cent or higher, and six per cent decreased. In terms of property taxes if your property appreciated as a result of market factors such as desirability then your property assessment might have increased more than typical, resulting in a higher tax increase. However, assessment on property is not the only factor affecting tax rate increases. “Taxes go up because it costs more to operate the municipality every year,” explained Lantz. Operational costs can increase for a wide variety of reasons including higher fuel costs, equipment costs or increases in staffing costs. “Even if property values are shrinking it doesn’t necessarily shrink the cost of operating the city,” said Lantz. Payments for city taxes can be made at the City of Camrose on or before the deadline of June 30.

One person’s garbage is another’s treasure By Lori Larsen

One person’s trash can be another person’s treasure, perhaps that is why garage and yard sales are so popular. But before you gather, dust off, price and set out all those bargains here are a few simple suggestions on how to have a successful garage sale. To begin with make sure your sale meets any requirements under by-law. City of Camrose by-law 2338/02 regulates the use of streets, sidewalks and other public property within the city of Camrose. Section 312 sub-section (1) states that no person

shall, without a permit, place any sign, notice, structure or object of any kind on public property. Sub-section (2) states that notwithstanding sub-section (1) temporary garage sale directional signs may be permitted (without permit) within two blocks of the garage sale site. Section 313 states that no person shall without a permit place or display any goods, merchandise or any thing, on any street or sidewalk, public property, for the purpose of selling, renting and advertising such goods. Once you have ensured

you are within the limits of the by-laws set your sale up in a manner that maintains public safety at all times. Keep paths used by customers clear a, use sturdy displays and tables, remove any hazards from the area (water, snow, ice electrical cords), ensure merchandise is safe to handle, keep pets inside or secured. Advertise your sale in your local paper and put up signs, balloons and other attractions on your property. Enlist helpers such as family, friends and neighbors. Consider having a neighborhood sale. Remem-

ber to keep items on private property only. Arrange items in categories. Price as many items as you can especially large ticket items. For smaller items, such as toys, have one price fits all. Don’t overprice. Getting rich is not the objective. Secure your cash by using a locked cash box that is always manned, or wear an apron with large pockets so you can take the cash with you. Secure your home, lock your doors or block off entry to your home. Create an atmosphere. Play some quiet background music, sell some

baked goods or beverages (lemonade). Consider the weather. If it is very hot or raining have cover such as an umbrella, gazebo, or go into the garage. Have the sale on a Saturday. This will allow a backup should weather interrupt or you need to keep selling. Once your sale is over consider donating any left over items (in good condition) to local charitable agencies. The Camrose Booster/ Camrose Now’s communitywide garage sale weekend will take place May 26, 27 and 28.

Helping hands By Lori Larsen In these days of economic uncertainty receiving a little extra support is always welcome. Extending that support to the organizations whose mandate is just that, giving a helping hand, makes the giving twice as powerful. Camrose Cargill donated $2,500 to Camrose Association for Community Living (CAFCL) towards kitchen supplies for the TIPS (Teaching Independence and Parent Support) program. CAFCL is a non-profit, community focused organization that offers services to people to develop skills and build quality of life in Camrose and East Central Alberta. Programs offered by CAFCL include; Family Services, Adult Residential Services, Acquired Brain Injury Outreach, Adult Outreach, The Rose Club, MORE (Meaningful Options for Role Enhancement - a day program), TIPS (Teaching Independence and Parent Support) PCAP (Parent Child Assistance Program), Kandu Summer Camp and Support Homes Contractors. The more than 110 staff are dedicated to CAFCL’s vision of ensuring that each person is an accepted and participating community member. For more information, contact Cherilyn Sharkey, public relations manager for Camrose Association for Community Living.

POPPY FUNDS SUPPORT POST SECONDARY EDUCATION

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Seanna Uglem, a University of Lethbridge student, received a $800 bursary from the Camrose branch of Royal Canadian Legion. This bursary will provide financial assistance towards her degree in education. The cheque was presented by poppy fund chair Barb Steinman.

Assisted living facilities Submitted

Submitted CAFCL executive director Esther McDonald accepts a donation of $2,500 from Camrose Cargill Cares chair Jennifer Tomaszewski and Cargill employees Tina Sroka and Mira Rhynold to be used towards community kitchen supplies for the TIPS (Teaching Independence and Parent Support) Program.

The decision to move yourself or a family member to an assisted living facility can be difficult. When men and women begin to experience difficulty with everyday activities, such as bathing, dressing or getting around, families may need to explore assisted living facilities. Thousands of Albertans reside in assisted living facilities. The majority of residents in senior living are those who may need assistance with one or two daily activities, but who are otherwise mobile and selfsufficient. Families faced with moving relatives into assisted living facilities can consider the following pointers to find facilities their loved ones will enjoy. Consider the arrangements and services offered. Some facilities offer single rooms, while others provide apartment-style living. Most assisted living facilities provide a variety of services,

such as housekeeping, laundry, exercise and wellness classes, and social activities, for their residents. Investigate the offerings at each home you visit, looking for a facility that best suits your loved one’s needs. Inquire about staff and their schedules. It is important to know how many staff members a facility has and how many people are working at any given time. Do staffing schedules differ at night? If a resident has a particular rapport with one staff member, can he or she be requested? Look for a facility that is well-staffed and adept at dealing with elderly men and women. Learn about individual service plans. Many assisted living facilities create individual service plans, or ISPs, for their residents to ensure individualized care is given. These plans are important for the safety and comfort of residents and also can help maximize a person’s

independence. Some communities offer memory care programs for those with Alzheimer’s disease or other cognitive disorders. Consider the security in place. A good assisted living facility has a 24-hour support system in place and immediate access to care. Rooms may be equipped with emergency phones that can be accessed day or night. Many homes have check-in desks so that residents are accounted for when going on outings and for announcing guests. Check on licensing. Confirm a facility is licensed and that it meets the expectations of the provincial government. In addition, check to see if any complaints have been filed against the home. Assisted living facilities can meet the needs of people who cannot live independently but do not require the around-the-clock care of a nursing home.

Q.

Do young people enjoy hot tubs?

A:

After selling tubs for the past quarter of a century we have learned that hardly any other purchase brings a family together like a hot tub. When families relax and spend time together in a backyard tub, stories are shared. Laughs abound. Honest feelings are expressed. Parents get to meet their kids’ friends. Kids get to know their parents. True character is revealed and parents get the opportunity to live and store the memories of many great hours. An investment in a hot tub is an investment in family. We think lounging, playing, and talking in a hot tub is a wonderful break from technology – TV, cell phone and computer. As much as these are all great technologies, we believe the mind and body also need a break from these items. So, choose a tub that’s right for you. Lay back – watch the stars at night. Listen to interesting comments or simply rejoice in the jets of water that soothe away the day’s stress. Or, invite the entire soccer team – then again, maybe not! Enjoy hot-tubbing!

Q.

What do today’s young people prefer as Graduation gifts?

A:

We know how thrilled young men and women are when they receive a personalized gift. Items with their name, date and even a symbol or other art customization will be cherished, often for life! Our revolutionary engraver will permanently customize brass, glassware, stainless steel, real or faux leather or other metals and materials. Items can be small, like a pendant or bracelet, large like a golf putter or stained glass collectible of any shape – a candle holder or round crystal ornament, as examples. Gold foil work is effortless and spectacular. Passport covers, diaries, school books or Bibles can be engraved with spectacular results. Graduation is a very special time. We stock an excellent assortment of merchandise which makes for wonderful engraved keepsakes. Or, bring in a personal or prized possession. We will amaze you with a lasting gift that is truly appreciated. Drop by to see samples of our unique capabilities.

Q.

What’s the best lubricant for my bike?

A:

Lots of people think of WD 40 as a lubricant. They use it on everything, iincluding their bikes. It’s really common for our technicians to see a bike that has had WD 40 used on it. Technically it isn’t a lubricant. It attracts dust and grit, which gums up the gears, and doesn’t work as well as true lubricants. In fact, it simply acts as a water displacement agent, hence the name “WD.” We carry a number of oils and lubricants designed specifically for bikes. It’s worth the small investment in a good quality lubricant to ensure the smooth functioning of your bike. The ones we sell to our customers are the only lubricants we use when we repair and maintain the hundreds of bikes that come into our shop every spring. If you would like us to completely clean and lubricate your bike and conduct a comprehensive safety check, we can do it for only $55. Give us a call or drop into our shop in downtown Camrose. Passionate planters can begin working their plots as soon as they have purchased them. Walkable Camrose hosts Walk and Roll week

By Lori Larsen Walkable Camrose invites residents to participate in the first annual Walk and Roll Week held May 9 to 13 organized by a subcommittee of Walkable Camrose. The week is designed to promote active transportation in the community. Citizens are being encouraged to leave their cars at home and walk, bike, rollerblade or skateboard to work, school or their desired destination throughout this week.

“We hope that people realize it doesn’t take much longer to walk or bike to their destination and there are many benefits when doing so,” said Lucy Ernst, chair of Walkable Camrose. Camrose Walk and Roll Week got off to a rolling start on May 9 at the Bill Fowler Centre parking lot from 7:30 to 9 a.m.. Residents were encouraged to walk or roll their way in and enjoy a free coffee compliments of Sacred Arts. Green Gear offered free mini tune ups

for residents who rolled in on their bikes. “One of our priority areas within Walkable Camrose is to create a culture of walking,” said Ernst. “We now want to build on that by creating a supportive culture for other modes of active transportation. We hope that by hosting Walk and Roll Week, people will experience the many health, environmental, economic and social benefits associated with active transportation and choose to

continue using active transportation when the week ends.” Participants are encouraged to stop by the Camrose Public Library during the first two weeks of May and tell how they will be moving during the walk and roll week by writing their name and the answer to “How will you move this week?” on a paper footprint, which will then be attached to a banner that will be displayed on the library’s front windows. All participants are eligible to enter draws for wellness

related prizes including a round of golf at Camrose Golf Course, one month pass to the Camrose Aquatic Centre, a one month pas to Augustana Fitness Centre, a one month pass to the City’s indoor walking track, bike bells, bike locks, t-shirts and water bottles. Participants can put their name into the drawbox located at the library, when they fill in their footprint. For more information contact Lucy at email lucy.ernst@ahs.ca or by telephone at 780-679-2968.

Area music fans are going to be treated to a special evening on Friday, May 13 when Punch Drunk Cabaret takes the Bailey Theatre stage at 8 p.m. Camrose’s favorite outlaw rockabilly and steampunk swing band has had a busy year since they last entertained here. “We are getting itchy to release our new CD to the public and play again at the Bailey Theatre,” said lead singer Randy Bailer. “We are coming up to six years together as a band and the one thing that never changes is we see ourselves as a live band first. Everything operates from the position of what can we do to re-create that live performance.” This time the Bailey Theatre Society and Rose City Roots Music Society are welcoming back Punch Drunk Cabaret to help preview a new CD. This will be the bands third CD, which will feature 10 tracks. It captures the same manic, aggressive energy of the live show onto a studio album. “We want the audience involved in what we do. They help us select songs for the album by giving us feedback. It starts in the writing phases where we pick songs that the audience can follow the rhythm easily and dance to, or join in with singalong parts for participation,” explained Bailer. “I’m writing right from the get-go thinking how the audience can be part of the song.” Punch Drunk Cabaret instantly brings a party atmosphere when they step on stage. “In this album we are a little more aggressive and the audience pushes us to play those high energy songs and that was the inspiration for the album. We start the show in mid-set form.” With so much energy, the love ballads tend to take a back seat. “We road tested the material six months before entering into the studio. We really wanted to know what people said worked or didn’t work,” he added. “We were well rehearsed prior going into the studio.” Continued on page 17

The album includes Juno and Grammy award winning producers/engineers. “We wanted a higher production this time. With the first two CDs, it was just trying to get three guys in a room and capture a really good performance. With this one, it was more painstakingly put together because there are more layers to it,” said Bailer. “We recorded entirely on our own and have never done that before. It was self-produced. We then took it to Ross Nykiforuk (The Northern Pikes), who we worked with before, and has since won a Juno with the Sheepdogs.” He engineered it and then passed it on to Peter J. Moore, who won a Grammy with his work on the latest Bob Dylan album. “We have a bigger sound, which is more like we have in a live setting. We are often complimented for our sound with only three band members.” Each CD release creates a new album cycle. “New staging is added, Sean has an entire new drum kit in support of the new record and everyone’s look has been updated or changed to reflect what we are doing now,” continued Bailer. “It will be a whole new Punch Drunk Cabaret show, but with the same energy people love.” The Electrik Steam Show album is the first to feature drummer Capt. Sean E. Watts, as well as front man Bailer’s newly found baritone guitar. Terry “Sawbones” Grant is as solid as ever. “Sean is the new guy, but has been with us a year and a half. It changed the energy, but he plays a cocktail drum kit and plays standing up. He brings even more energy to the songs because he is able to move in a full cycle,” he said. Bailer still considers Camrose as the band’s home town. “Although Robin (Eklund of Camrose) has left the band, we consider the Bailey Theatre a great venue and a place we can call home. REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson Disconnect and reconnect I’ve just spent a week in an idyllic location – Whidbey Institute on Whidbey Island, a short ferry ride from Seattle. Whidbey Institute includes about 100 acres of mostly natural land – giant hundred-year-old trees, walking trails, buildings made of local wood and stone and built by local people. Deer wandered through the grounds. Rhododendrons and irises were in full bloom. Some of the mostly organic food they served was grown in their own gardens. As anyone who gardens knows, you can tell the difference! *** My purpose for being there was a reunion of people with whom I graduated from a Master’s degree program twenty-one years ago. During our two-years of becoming a learning community, we bonded. Unlike some high school or college reunions, our reunion gatherings include meaningful conversations about what’s really going on in our lives – the joys, the sorrows, the challenges, the profound changes as many of us move into the “legacy” phase of our lives. We’re long past trying to impress each other. Some of us are moving from high intensity corporate careers to forms of semi-retirement that allow for a more leisurely pace. Some have the luxury of following their natural rhythms of sleep and activity. Some are caring for husbands or wives with cognitive or other disabilities and, frankly, are exhausted from 24-7 caregiving responsibility. Some are opening up to new spiritual practices, or learning a new language, or planning the sailing trip they’ve dreamed of for years. Some have moved into facilities with access to care as their own physical condition deteriorates. Our core question is always, “What are we learning from our experiences?” I felt deep connections with these people I see rarely, but with whom I’ve been ‘checking in’ regularly for more than two decades. *** On the day we arrived, the comfortable farmhouse in which I stayed did not have access to internet. Internet was available in other buildings, but I was fine without it for a while. The internet connection in our building was restored within a day, but I decided to stay disconnected from internet and all mass media for almost a week. What a difference that made! I had time to notice the intricate markings on flowers, to feed pieces of apple to fawns who meandered by, to smell the woodsy smells on the walking trails, to breathe deeply and relax, to ground myself in what’s real – earth, sky, plants, ocean, mountains. As I disconnected from the mental noise of the internet and the physical noise of mass media, surrounded by the beauty of nature, I found it easier and easier to reconnect with people I treasure, and be more fully aware of my thoughts and emotions and what really matters. *** Disconnect to reconnect? Sounds like a plan. I’ve decided to experiment. At least one day a week, I’m disconnecting from electronic communication to see if I can reconnect with some of what I experienced on Whidbey Island. I’ll keep you posted. *** If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com

With the present crisis in Fort McMurray, an empty lodge in Camrose - the Stoney Creek Lodge - and people seeking a roof over their heads for many months to come, one wonders if an empty building like this couldn’t be utilized to help people in distress. Our thoughts and prayers are with the evacuees as they try to make some normalcy out of their broken lives. Janet Rickards, Camrose Opposed to legislation

You can certainly count my wife Doris and I as being against assisted end of life in any form. Doris says the whole debate “makes me ill.” I agree. We wonder where law makers get their authority to legislate end of life. Obviously they did not create life. They do not own life, nor therefore, are they empowered to end life. We believe also that there is a higher power involved. And so we believe that the mandate of the law is to protect and promote the sanctity of life, certainly not to end life. As to “end suffering,” we

understand that there is a medication to control pain. We understand that to remove life support from the terminally ill does allow for a natural death. Doris and Bernie Rostaing, Ohaton *This letter originally ran in the May 3 edition. The correct version is listed above and the Booster regrets any confusion this may have caused. Questionable reasoning

In response to the councillors proposal to transfer the financial risks of their business of supplying water to the residents of Camrose I simply must shake my head in disbelief. Wouldn’t it be nice to live in a world where those in the business of supplying a commodity didn’t have to shoulder any risk at all. Wow, I’d love that! Just imagine not having to train staff to ask the proper questions and check out the references of every single customer they elect to do business with, the thought of it makes me positively giddy. Unfortunately that particular planet doesn’t happen to be the one we live on. Every business person I know has had to shoulder the risks that are inherent to their field of endeavour and they understand that these are “their” responsibilities to mitigate through the use of well proven techniques as mentioned by Ron Pilger in his well written letter to the editor of the latest edition of the Camrose Booster. Credit card hold/debitable deposit with automatic warning letters issued as it is depleted so that when the water is finally cut off sufficient warning has been issued in a timely man-

ner. These were very good alternatives. I can appreciate the frustration associated with delinquent water accounts, but suggesting that the risk of them should lie with a landlord who can’t even confirm with the city of Camrose if his/her tenants’ accounts are up to date because of privacy laws, or cannot even enter the rented premises without confirmed consent from the tenant in question (even if they are absent), leaves them little recourse to respond to just the situation described by Ron in his example of a necessary eviction notice. As a landlord, I too experience losses that I cannot just heartlessly shove off on the next tenant, painful as it is, I must take the bad with the good. I’m sure most of the citizens of Camrose understand that a utility service will have its legitimate costs of which bad accounts are one, but the real source of limiting these costs are only addressed by adopting good financial products that eliminate a person’s ability to prosper “unfairly” at the expense of others and this must be done when the account is first established, which is the responsibility of the one who provides the commodity, period. In conclusion I must agree with Ron in saying that this proposed policy is a bad proposition which unfortunately suggests a council that is not very business friendly, or at the very least, not very understanding that business does have risks that you can’t ethically just wish upon somebody else. Pat Hagel, Camrose

EARTH DAY

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Chance and Peter, the 18 and 16-year old draft horses were out in full hitch-up gear in the Staples parking lot on April 22 to help celebrate Earth Day. Reg Ilnicki and 14-year-old son Brayden, along with driver Dick Laurin of Dick Laurin’s Hay and Sleigh Rides north of Tofield ensured a wagon full of delighted passengers had a fun ride. Donations received for the hay ride and other activities held were given to the 4-H foundation.

Raised on a farm close to the U.S. border, he spent his youth working on the family farm and later also for neighbors for very little pay. Alvin joined the Navy at the young age of 17 where he was stationed on Corvette ships, first in Halifax and then guarding submarine nets at Prince Rupert. After the war, he married his childhood sweetheart Mary Lone, on August 23, 1947 and moved to Winnipeg. At that time he didn’t have a career and discovered that bricklayers earned a fair wage and that’s what he decided to be. He built his first fireplace by watching someone else build one. A year later they welcomed daughter Marilyn. Al and Mary decided to explore opportunities on the west coast and moved to North Vancouver in the fall of 1948. Daughter Diane was born there in 1949 and son Lyle followed in 1951. In late 1951 they moved the family to Nanaimo where Al and his brother Ken built a duplex. Judy was born there in 1953 and shortly after, Al and Mary decided the prospects were better in Alberta so they moved to Stettler in the summer of 1953. They couldn’t find anything to rent, so Al built a two-room house on skids, and in 1954 they moved the house from Stettler to South Edmonton where Gail was born the same year. Al was away working in northern Alberta for weeks at a time so his time with family was special when he came home. He built an all brick house in south Edmonton and we were all excited to have a cement basement where we could ride our bikes when it was cold outside. Even though he was working six days a week, he always made sure to make an ice rink on the garden in winter and took the family camping in summer in the home-made tent trailer he built. Al started his own masonry business, Finley Masonry Ltd. in Edmonton in 1958. Al and Mary always believed the best move they ever made was to Camrose in 1963 where they made lifelong friends and, over the years, built a successful reputation as a trusted contractor. Much of his work can be seen, not only in Camrose, but throughout central and northern Alberta. Although he retired in 1978 at the age of 53, Al could still be found laying brick and stone well into his 80s. Al and Mary spent many wonderful years of retirement. Golfing, camping, fishing and hunting were favorite pastimes. They travelled extensively and spent many happy winters in Arizona. Family was most important to Al and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was his greatest joy. A Celebration of Al’s life was held on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at 11:00 am from the Camrose United Church with Rev. Alan Richards officiating. Inurnment took place in the Camrose Valleyview Cemetery. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to Ducks Unlimited, Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Alberta Cancer Society. Margaret Elizabeth Naslund August 5, 1938 ~ May 2, 2016 Margaret Elizabeth was born August 5, 1938 to Alvin and Dorothy Forsen, the second of three children. The family farmed in the east Hay Lakes district where Margaret attended Brandland School, and later bused to Hay Lakes School. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Wilhelmina Lutheran Church. At the young age of sixteen Margaret met the love of her life, Arnold Naslund, and they were married a year later, September 2, 1955, at Wilhelmina. They began their life together on the Naslund home place where they farmed for 35 years until their retirement to Camrose in 1990. During those years four children were born, Barbara in 1956, Gordon in 1958, Bonnie in 1963 and June in 1966. Life on the farm was busy where together, Mom and Dad milked cows, raised cattle, pigs, chickens and some grain. It didn’t stop there for Mom. She would fill her days forever baking, cooking, sewing, cleaning and canning fruit in the fall which would last most of the winter. During their farming years, they appreciated the great neighbors and coffee visits with them, the community they lived in, and life on the farm, however difficult some years may have been. In 1990 they sold the farm and moved to Camrose where Mom continued to work part-time at Smitty’s for a few more years. She truly enjoyed their home in town and continued to bake amazing buns and flatbread, giving most of it to her kids. Her annual fall “palt fest” was something even the grandchildren looked forward to. Christmas was always at Mom and Dad’s where the family got together for Christmas cheer and turkey, and as the evening progressed so did the noise and laughter. Mom grew an abundance of bedding plants in the summer, kept the bird feeder filled in the winter, watched her soap stories and crocheted blankets and pillow covers year round. When Dad was placed in long term care at Bethany, Mom’s routine changed to daily visits with Dad, bringing him flatbread and sometimes dinner. Her love and commitment to Dad and her family was unconditional. Mom passed away peacefully the evening of Monday, May 2 in St. Mary’s Hospital, three months after being diagnosed with cancer. She will be lovingly missed and is survived by one son Gordon and his wife Joan and their three sons Derrick, Jonathan and Austin; one daughter June and her daughter Jacqueline; her other grandchildren Brenda (Curtis), Charlene, Brian, Marie and Brittany; her great-grandchildren Ariel, Nora, Elsa and Axel; her brother Glen and his wife Betty Forsen, sister-in-law Sylvia Lechelt, sister-in-law Alphild Sims and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of almost 60 years Arnold in June 2015, daughters Bonnie in March 1994 and Barbara in November 2013, as well as her brother Dennis in 1963 and a son-in-law Jack in 1985. “Sov så gott” Mom. A funeral service was held on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at 2:00 pm from Wilhelmina Lutheran Church near Hay Lakes, Alberta with Rev. Ron Chetney officiating. Inurnment will take place in the Wilhelmina Cemetery. Memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to Wilhelmina Lutheran Church. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

The culmination of his work saw this community church build a new facility. Wilf never really retired. He served as the Western Representative for Christar. He became chaplain of the Good Sam RV Club in Camrose and was a guest speaker at the Chinese congregation in Millwoods. Wilf loved his family and was known to support them at all their events. “There wasn’t a prouder Grandpa anywhere!” Wilf experienced a stroke in December of 2014. The Lord granted us the most special 16 months of time with him. We learned so much about his life and his faithfulness to the Lord. It was Wilf’s calling to introduce everyone he met to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. We have no doubt that the Lord will say “Well done thou good and faithful servant”.

Its dynamic grid lines provide the perfect target when backing up or hitching a trailer. To keep you powered up, the 2016 Sierra Denali adds a centre console, wireless charging mat for use with a variety of smartphones, and other compatible mobile devices. New for 2016 is support for the available Apple Car Play, as well as Android Auto. They’re smart ways to use your phone inside your Sierra. Now many of the functions you use your phone for – entertainment, communications and directions – appear on the built-in display. Just plug your phone into the USB outlet and go. “Sierra Denali front seats have 12-way power adjusters, including four-way power

lumbar control. The folding rear 60/40 split three passenger bench includes child seat top tether anchor (Double and Crew Cab models only). Rear-seat comfort is the result of 1040 mm of leg room on Crew Cabs. And getting into and out of the second row in the Double Cab is easy, thanks to forwardhinged rear doors,” explained Carroll. The heated steering wheel, standard on Denali, adds warmth whenever you demand it. Power adjustable pedals are standard to help drivers of varying sizes sit at a comfortable distance from the steering wheel.

Feel the horsepower

Sierra’s 4.3 litre V6 and 6.2 litre V8 engines feature Direct Injection and continuously Variable Valve Timing, as well as Active Fuel Management to deliver power and efficiency. No other competitive pickup offers, all of these technologies standard on its engines. In fact, the available 5.3 litre V6 offers both 355 horsepower and 10.6 litres per 100 km highway (4x2), while the 6.2 litre V8 offers 420 horsepower with 11.4 litres per 100 km highway (4x2). Both are paired with a Hydra-Matic 8-speed automatic transmission.

Sierra Denali’s Magnetic Ride Control suspension system precisely speed-reads the road up to 1,000 times a second, responding to changes in the road long before you ever could. The Eaton Automatic Locking Rear Differential directs power to the wheel with the most traction on loose gravel or slippery surfaces to keep Sierra moving continuously forward. Safety design

Sierra’s body structure is engineered to help maintain the integrity of the passenger compartment in the event of a collision. All steel from wheel to wheel, it’s designed to crush in a controlled manner, absorbing as much of the energy as a crash as possible. “Forward Collision Alert is available to help warm you when you’re rapidly approaching another vehicle and it appears a collision may be imminent,” added Carroll. The Safety Alert Driver Seat relays input from Forward Collision Alert and Lane Keep Assist and alerts the driver of potential traffic danger using directional vibration pulses within the seat cushion. See the 2016 GMC Sierra Denali at McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC at 385048 Avenue, Camrose. Phone 780-672-2355 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

A Founders Days celebration at the station Aug. 20 will include a garden party and chocolate festival, entertainment by the Station Swing Band and rides on the Mirror Lake Express with characters from the Island of Sodor. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Banked sick days costing millions Submitted

The practice of government employees “banking” sick days left the Alberta government with a $114 million liability in 2013-14, according to the latest research from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB). Banking means that if an employee doesn’t use all their allotted sick days in a year, they can save them for later. “Although core provincial employees are thankfully not able to bank sick days, other government sector workers are benefiting from cushy sick day provisions. Having a safety net in place in case employees get sick in the short-term is obviously a responsible thing to do. However, the practice of banking sick days raises questions as to whether they are being used for purposes that may not be related to illness,” said Amber Ruddy, CFIB’s Alberta director. “Some employees at AHS are able to bank up to 120 sick days, and that’s unacceptable. These are exactly the kind of policies government should be looking to reform to cut costs and restore economic confidence as part of the plan to get back to balance.” Nearly 30 per cent of government plans across Canada allow for banking sick days, versus less than three per cent of private sector plans. Provincial governments in Quebec and Saskatchewan allow unlimited sick day banking for their employees, while the government of Newfoundland and Labrador limits its workers to bank 240 days at a time. Quebec currently owes its employees $829 million in banked sick days (sick day liability), more than any other province. Quebec government employees can also choose to receive a cash payout worth 50 per cent of the total value of their banked sick days upon retirement or termination – up to three months’ salary – or early retirement using their banked sick days. “Sick days are supposed to be for when you’re sick. Governments have set up a system where some workers may be using banked sick days for extra time off when they are not ill. We need to fix the system so that everyone is playing by the same rules,” added Ruddy. “Governments at all levels should move to eliminate sick day banking and introduce affordable short-term disability plans for public sector workers to better align sick leave provisions with those in the private sector.”

PROPOSED WATER BYLAW 2881-16 Notice of Important Change

The City of Camrose is proposing a new Water Bylaw 2881-16. City Council gave first reading to this bylaw at their April 18, 2016 meeting. A major change is being proposed in this bylaw that will affect water accounts on rental properties. It will require the transfer of water accounts for rental properties into the name of the property owner when tenancy changes. Once switched to the property owner’s name, outstanding charges on water accounts will be the responsibility of the owner and no longer the renter. Water Accounts currently in the name(s) of a tenant(s), as allowed under existing Water Bylaw 2200-00, would remain unchanged until the tenant vacates the property. If passed by City Council, this bylaw will become effective June 1, 2016. Any questions or concerns regarding the proposed Water Bylaw 2881-16 can be directed to Darren Lockhart, Director of Accounting & Assessment, 780-672-4426.

Danielson joins MacEwan Griffins next season By Murray Green

Camrose Kodiaks defenceman Stefan Danielson has accepted an offer to play for the MacEwan University Griffins in Edmonton next season. “I am excited about the future and what it holds for me. Coach Bram Stephen has

done a great job in recruiting and I can not wait for the school season and hockey season to start,” said Danielson. He joins Tyler Morrison and Cam Gotaas from this year’s team to commit to MacEwan. “The Kodiaks organization would like to congratu-

late Stefan on this accomplishment and we are excited for his future,” said Kodiaks coach and general manager Boris Rybalka. “He has worked hard for this and is well deserving. MacEwan is getting a great defenceman, but more importantly, a great young man.”

Danielson had a career high in points this year with seven goals and 35 points, and was missed in the south final due to injury. He collected a goal and two assists in eight playoff games. In junior hockey with Okotoks and Camrose, he scored 13 goals and added 62

assists in 210 games in the regular season. Former Kodiaks Brett Njaa and Matt Waseylenko played for the Griffins last season as the team builds for the move from the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport conference.

PUBLIC NOTICE – 2016 PEST AND WEED CONTROL The Parks Section of the Community Services Department is committed to environmentally responsible pest control practices. At various times throughout the year, the City of Camrose Community Services Department controls broadleaf and other weeds and insect pests depending on the genus, infestation, safety and conditions. Small mammalian pests, such as beavers and gophers, may also be controlled. Pest Management activities occur on properties such as parks, sports fields, golf course, CRE, boulevards, sidewalks, roadway buffers, water bodies and vacant city land. The Department is evaluatin g new systems and products to reduce pesticide usage where possible. Special care and attention regarding the impact on the park users is considered in all applications. For example, no spray treatment takes place on any site where wind speed exceeds 16 km/hr. All procedures and pesticides used meet the strict standards established by Health Canada and Alberta Environmental Protection and are considered safe for these types of applications. Treated areas are posted with yellow and black signs indicating the date and time of application, re-entry time, the pest controlled and pesticide used. Below is a schedule that approximates when our field crews will conduct these programs and the materials they will use. Control of weeds and tree pests in residential neighborhoods is provided on the bases of citizens’ requests, the location and the pest or weed infestation levels and safety concerns.

Tyler Vollrath

By Murray Green

Canadian country music performer Jess Lee and fiddle player of the year, Tyler Vollrath of Bawlf will be highlighting the life of Merle Haggard, who died earlier this year. “Growing up in a rural community listening to country music, I was exposed to the music of many great country artists. On the top of that list of country music icons would have to be Merle Haggard,” said Vollrath. “Over the past 20 years of my professional music career, performing Merle Haggard songs has been a staple in the repertoire of every musician and band I have come across, from dingy smoke filled bars to the largest festival stages.” Haggard is the sum of what true country music was, is and should be. “For me as a musician, being able to perform an entire evening of music dedicated to Haggard, is truly an honour. The fact that the band is made up of some of Canada’s most sought after musicians, including Jess Lee, who has one of the truest country voices I have ever heard, will make the night that much more special.” The show called “Hag” will be at the Bailey Theatre on May 16 beginning 7 p.m. The Haggard shows were booked prior to his death. “When I first decided to put on these shows it was all about the music and given what has happened, the evening seems that much more important,” added Vollrath. The show, lead by BCCMA male vocalist of the year Jess Lee, takes audience members through many of the ‘The Okie from Muskogee’s’ 38 number one hits, including fan favourites “Workin Man Blues” and “Mama Tried.” Lee’s voice will have audiences doing a double take, as it emulates the rich, smooth, baritone sound of Merle’s flawlessly. Drawing from Haggard’s 13th studio album, A Tribute to the Best Damn Fiddle Player in the World (or, My Salute to Bob Wills), “Hag” has Lee sharing the stage with two-time Canadian Country Music Association award winning fiddle player of the year Vollrath, who completes the show with a tribute to Bob Wills feature. The show promises to leave listeners feeling as though they’ve taken a trip to Bakersfield, as Lee, Vollrath and an all-star band of some of Canada’s most sought after musicians recall the memories. Tickets for the show are available online at www. baileytheatre.com or at the Bailey Theatre Box Office, 780-672-5510.

CCHS class of 1966 celebrates 50 years Submitted by the Reunion Class of 66

Since September 2015, Marilyn (Finley) Bittorf, Don Carter, Ruby (Hildebrandt) Carstairs, Dawn (Keagan) Duckworth, Wendy (Sollid) Jeglum, June (Swaren) Rousell, Peggy (Rhine) Shuman, Barbara (Stuart) Stroh, Dru Ann (Wilson) and John Wynnychuk have been planning for the upcoming 50th reunion. The first obstacle for the planning group was to believe 50 years had passed. The last time the class of ‘66 was together they celebrated their 25th reunion in 1991. The time lapse of 25 years was the second obstacle for the group planning. How to find all 100 graduates, plus friends, and update current addresses for everyone? This was considered a large class at that time and the first to complete their complete high school in the brand new composite high school. The search was on for classmates and friends who shared the CCHS hallways in the 60s. “We had the 1991 information, but a lot of things have changed including the use of email,” said Bittorf, contact person for the reunion. “We have updated the list, but still have several people who we were unable to locate. We will continue to keep looking for these people, maybe the readers can help,” she continued. “The 50th reunion is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we want to make sure everyone knows about the reunion,” stated Shuman. This is a reunion for class of ‘66, but extends an invitation to friends, siblings, spouses and teachers. Former teachers Gordon Dennis, Leon Lohner, Mike Torpe and Cliff Hoyme have been invited to join the fun. The third obstacle for the planning group was to learn that several more classmates and teachers have died since the 25th reunion. “We are saddened that they won’t be with us,” said Dru Ann Wynnychuk. The committee has compiled a memorial list. “The plans for the reunion are to keep it simple and fun,” reminded Rousell. The reunion will be on Saturday, June 4 at the Bailey Theatre. The festivities kick off at 3 p.m. with an informal time for reuniting, chatting, laughing and storytelling at the Bailey Theatre lobby and bistro. Then the early evening will include a meal by Prairie Oven followed by live music and dance with Godfrey Blaque, a local band with an excellent selection of 60s classic rock. If you have information about the class of ‘66, or would like to attend the reunion contact Marilyn at 780-672-4145, or Barb at 780672-6159.

Federal report card time

By Kevin Sorenson, MP Battle River-Crowfoot

Students in all corners of our riding of Battle RiverCrowfoot are studying diligently to complete their studies and pass finals in order to earn the best report card they can before the summer break. Canadians know that the Liberal government’s failure to deliver on their campaign promises is giving them trouble earning passing marks on their report card. The Liberals refuse to acknowledge the 2015 fiscal year’s $7.5 billion budgetary surplus created by the previous government. The finance department’s publication the ‘Fiscal Monitor’, the Report of the Parliamentary Budget Officer and others confirm the surplus, but the Liberals refuse to listen. This makes it difficult for them to understand that the massive budgetary deficit that they are currently racking up is entirely their own fault and created starting in the month of March of 2016. The Liberals continue to recklessly borrow tens of billions of dollars over the next two fiscal years beyond the billions of dollars they are borrowing this year. They are going to have to learn the hard lesson that they will not be able to balance the federal budget by 2018-19 like they promised. Another failing grade that the Liberals are earning is their inability to be frank and honest with Canadians, taxpayers and the Parliamentary budget officer when it comes to telling the truth about their budget figures. The Parliamentary budget officer complained that too many facts and figures required from the new finance minister were missing. The Liberal Whip continues to deny Liberal MPs on the floor of the House of Commons to consent to allow the Fiscal Monitor document to be tabled in the House. Like teachers trying to relay the information to students, the Official Opposition rises daily (including myself) to present the evidence in the Fiscal Monitor. The refusal by the government to pay attention to these facts and figures is short–sighted and stubborn because the Fiscal Monitor is widely published and read. This budget-deficit fiasco could have been avoided if the (admittedly new) Liberal government had simply done their homework so that they could follow the rules. I encourage all students to work hard in the coming weeks during the lead-up to their report card. Emergency food drive to support fire victims Alberta Food Banks launched an emergency food drive so people can easily donate the food needed to support the victims of the Fort McMurray wildfire. Visit www.FeedAlberta. com to purchase food you want to donate and it will be delivered on your behalf directly to the food banks that are providing support to the displaced Fort McMurray residents. The food items listed on the website are those most requested by the Wood Buffalo Food Bank, which serves the Fort McMurray community. It is believed at this time the food bank is still standing. “So many people from across the continent have been in touch and expressed their desire to contribute food. This emergency campaign provides those supporters a direct and easy way to do that right now,”

said Stephanie Rigby, executive director of Alberta Food Banks, which is the provincial association of food banks. Since the evacuation of Fort McMurray on May 3, Alberta Food Banks has been working closely with members of its provincial network to support displaced residents. Alberta Food Banks is using Amp Your Good’s online food drive system which enables people to donate food items specifically requested by food banks. The emergency food drive is designed to gather large quantities of fruit and vegetables as well as a variety of non-perishable staples. The provincial association is currently coordinating food shipments to food banks in several Alberta communities helping fire evacuees.

Situated near parks and schools, this renovated bi-level is the perfect house for a family to call home. There are five bedrooms and three bathrooms in total, plenty of room for everyone in the family to have their own space. As you enter you will immediately be impressed by the new flooring and newer paint colours. When the family wants to gather for games, or movie night there is an open living space that leads into a formal dining area. Both have large windows that flood the area with natural light. The kitchen boasts new cabinets that offer plenty of storage space. You can access the back deck through the kitchen where you can sit and enjoy your morning coffee overlooking a nicely landscaped yard. Completing the main floor is a master bedroom with an attached two piece ensuite, two other bedrooms and a four piece main bathroom. The finished downstairs has a cozy

family room complete with a wood burning fireplace, perfect for sitting around on those chilly evenings. There are two other bedrooms located downstairs, one oversized, which could also serve as an ideal spot for a workout and or craft room. The backyard is completely fenced making it a safe place for the children to run and play. A newer patio area offers a fabulous spot to sit in the shade or out of the wind and a fire pit in the yard is great for marshmallow roasting. At the back of the property is a detached garage with easy access through the back alley. This home at 5722 Marler Drive is priced to sell at $299,900. An open house will be held on May 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. For a personal tour contact Cole Walker or Tylor Keller at: Central Agencies Inc. 4870-51 Street, Camrose 780-672-4495 or Cole 780-679-5544 cell/text Tylor 780-281-0016 cell/text

Welcome to the 2016 Golfing Season C

amrose Golf Course Superintendent Darren McDermott, in all his 35 years of groundskeeping, has never seen his golf course in such great shape so early in the season. All 18 tees and greens were open for play on April 9, an unprecedented early spring start. Darren and his crew don’t have any major plans for course improvements this year. The new seventh hole is finished and is in terrific condition. New sand traps were carved into the left side of the fairway and a new green was built. It was the last of the original nine greens on the golf course, which was established in 1922. Work will be completed on the creek feature that runs adjacent to the tees on the fourth hole, but for the most part efforts will be focussed on keeping the course as pristine as possible. Although no major projects are scheduled for the course, a significant change is coming to the clubhouse. A lift is being installed for those who have difficulty negotiating stairs. This new lift will provide easier access to the upstairs restaurant, which is being managed this year by Stockmen’s Chophouse. The restaurant itself also underwent improvements with new flooring and new paint and features a wonderful view overlooking the golf course. You don’t have to be a member of the golf course to enjoy the clubhouse restaurant. Golfers in Camrose will once again be greeted by the friendly staff in the pro shop. CPGA Master Professional Bill Penny, his wife Marnie and their team: Assistant Professional Braxton Fox, shop assistants Debbie Naslund, Brent Lewis, Keith Bratke, Ross Shuman

and Pat Bohnet as well as the outside service staff, who are all returning. Great service is a priority for the pro shop staff and having them return this year will ensure the excellent level of service will be maintained. This also will be the first year in some time that the shop has had an assistant professional. Braxton Fox has been accepted

as a candidate for membership in the CPGA, and is well on his way to becoming a Class A professional. All golfers, no matter their skill level, are welcome at the Camrose Golf Course. Take a look at the next few pages for more information about what’s offered here. The Camrose Golf Course is fun for everyone.
