Hockey Year-round! In the past decade, hockey has increasingly become a year-round sport. Camrose players of all ages have been at a distinct disadvantage compared to those from other communities when it comes to skills development. Two factors come into play – the cost and lack of local ice several months each year. Necessity, it has been said, is the mother of invention and the Camrose Kodiaks Junior A hockey team has come up with an alternate viable, solution to assist in high-tempo training of aspiring hockey players of all ages, regardless of skill level. Along with the generous assistance of former Kodiaks players who have gone on to play in the NHL, the Kodiaks have built an incredible off-ice training facility in the former location of Battle River Hockey Plus. It is located on 48th Avenue behind Royal LePage. Two skating treadmills are located in the facility. The unique and impressive half-million dollar undertaking has synthetic ice surfaces where players on skates are able to perfect their shooting, stick handling, passing and face-offs. An open house is being planned for the near future to allow anyone interested the opportunity to watch skating on artificial ice.

By Dan Jensen The financial picture is starting to look a little less bleak for Alberta’s Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) programs. Camrose and District Support Services executive director Margaret Holliston told Committee of the Whole Council June 15 that she is “quite confident” the NDP government will be coming through with its promise of a $25 million FCSS grant. “That is what we have been asking for a couple of years,” said Holliston. “It will get us to the point where we had hoped to have been in 2012 and 2013. The additional funding should take some of the pressure off several Alberta municipalities, including the City of Camrose and Camrose County, which, due to a provincial government funding freeze, have been asked to contribute more than the 20 per cent of the dollars for FCSS programs that are required under the existing 80/20 provincial municipal split. “The split was starting to look more like 75 per cent province and 25 per cent municipality,” said Holliston. “We were asking the government to rebalance, if you like, with a provincial grant increase that would put the municipal contributions back at 20 per cent.” CDSS isn’t sure at this time what the increase in provincial funding will mean in terms of the total City contribution for 2016. “If the provincial grant is increased then obviously the municipal match will increase accordingly,” said Holliston. “I suspect that the (City) increase will be no more than what your contribution currently is and it will likely be less. We may not have to ask you for an over contribution in addition to that match.” Questions about future FCSS programs across the province had serious questions at the end of 2014 and the start of 2015 as to whether they would continue to exist past the end of this year. “Looking at some of the provincial decisions we began to think that the

priorities were shifting,” said Holliston. “A lot of the new money had been going almost entirely to early childhood development as a provincial priority and it was beginning to be suggested to us that the 1-800 number for accessing information (about programs) from the Government of Alberta could replace the information and referral that FCSS programs provide.” The problem with that, according to Holliston, is that central information always excludes local services. “Central information referral doesn’t really help us achieve the Help Book for the clubs and organizations or the repository of knowledge and relationships that we have built locally that allow us to actually have conversations with people,” she said. “This is the information and referral of which we are very proud of at the CDSS level. People call us about anything. I answer the phone, our receptionist and administrative assistant answers the phone; any of us can answer the phone and have a conversation with someone who doesn’t really know what he or she wants but needs that conversation in order to obtain information and referral suggestions to get their immediate ducks in a row in terms of planning how they may be addressing the issue they are experiencing. That is the capacity at the local level that we were concerned about losing.” Relationships Holliston believes that in addition to learning new skills, CDSS clients are able to develop relationships and connections with CDSS staff who they are able to call if they have recurring difficulties. “How people connect with us through any of our programs is crucial and essential. Are they dependent on us? I like to think not, but they know this is one place they can get the information they need. “As long as we have something where people can connect and have folks who will sustain those connections, we will be making a difference.”

Grand Park Plaza 6006-48 Avenue • Camrose

780-672-7474

FCSS regulations Holliston noted that FCSS is reviewing regulations and looking at ways to amend the current funding formula so that any new money that becomes available isn’t immediately swallowed up by the cities where a lot of the new growth is happening. “FCSS is throughout Alberta and some of the smaller communities do need a little bit more,” she said. “They may in fact be the only game in town when it comes to providing people with access to some of the social services, including social services that aren’t necessarily located in some of the smaller communities.” ParentLink Holliston told council that CDSS has received new funding for a ParentLink Centre program that provides a variety of resources to help young parents and families deal with stressors in their lives, and is due to start an early childhood development mapping initiative in 2016. “This (early childhood development mapping) is a project where children are assessed on such areas of development as physical health and well-being, social competency, emotional maturity, language and thinking skills, communication and general knowledge. The assessment is done according to small pockets of communities (Camrose has five) and based on how well children are doing in terms of school readiness. In any one of five areas there is work we can do to assist young families in increasing child school readiness.” Holliston expressed appreciation to council for the new facility access subsidy program which increased the income threshold for people accessing facility services in Camrose, as well as the number of times those people can use those services. “CDSS was handed full administration of that program and it is busy,” she said. “Currently we have a lot of young families coming to register for the day camps at the aquatic centre. There are some that now qualify that didn’t qualify last year.”

Home rehabilitation allows Jensen to enjoy life By Murray Green

A new recreational therapy program ensures hip fracture patients heal their mind and soul, while enjoying life at home. Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose recruited a new recreational therapist and recreational therapy assistant to enhance the patient care experience earlier this year. Those recovering from hip fractures at St. Mary’s Hospital are reducing stressors, improving physical health, connecting with loved ones and building skills for when they return home, thanks to a new recreational therapy program. Recreational therapist Marina Brown and recreational therapy assistant Chella Ross have been treating patients for about five months since the hospital received temporary funding for two new positions as part of a Fragility and Stability project led by the Bone and Joint Health Strategic Clinical Network. The project hopes to improve recovery time and reduce the number of days patients stay in hospital by 10 per cent within the first year. Patient Elvi Jensen, 93, broke her hip on April 1 and was home back doing what she loves best in less than three weeks (April 20). “During that three weeks we ended up interacting a lot with Elvi. She worked with the group and it was a fun experience,” said Chella. “We formed a friendship through the process. We worked with Elvi Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We had a an exercise program, a coffee group, and when we got to know her quite

well, we did some baking with her.” Elvi and her husband owned a bakery in Tofield for many years. “I like to bake cinnamon buns, but my husband was the baker. I helped with everything else at the bakery,” Elvi said. She became very popular with her mouth watering buns. “One of the highlights was making bread and cinnamon buns with Elvi. I thought it would be easy working with an expert, but it was more pressure keeping up with her,” confessed Chella. “They (cinnamon buns) went pretty fast,” said Elvi. “As soon as we started baking the fresh buns the smell filled the building and everyone knew someone was baking. Elvi was even more popular that day,” added Chella. “It’s a good program because it gets people back doing what they want to do.” Elvi returned to her home (Viewpoint at The Bethany Group), after breaking her hip from falling. Thanks to the new recreational therapy program, she is enjoying the same level of mobility she had before she was injured. “To see someone of her age be this vibrant in that short of time is incredible and a testament to the program,” said Rayne Kuntz, Covenant Health communications officer. “Usually patients have a decline. The social activities also help with healing faster because if they are in better spirits, they heal faster. When she was teaching Chella to make bread, it was all part of the healing process.” Both Marina and Chella work one-on-one with patients,

playing crib, reminiscing, sewing and cooking. They also organize group programming with volunteer services, so patients have the opportunity to socially interact while in hospital. This stimulation plays a large role in ensuring patients are emotionally, mentally and socially healthy after what can be a life-altering injury. Even Elvi was surprised at her fast recovery. “Everyone helped me a lot. The nurses, therapists and others in the social group all helped me heal faster. It helped a lot because they raised my spirits. It made me feel good to be active. In two

weeks I felt good and was anxious to come home,” said Elvi. “We can see the difference from the days we are not there. She was healing through other activities and not just the therapy work we were providing,” added Cella. “You see the healing before your eyes because people are healing so quickly. We met her the day after surgery and the first day we talked a lot and soon she was getting around.” Through this program, staff aim to decrease medication use and post-operative delirium, while increasing patient satisfaction and promoting healthy living. This program serves approxi-

mately four to six hip fracture patients each week. “I was anxious to come home and start painting again. I paint pictures on stones, mostly animals. I’m now teaching others. I’m happy to be able to paint again,” added Elvi. “My foot is a little swollen because I broke my ankle three years ago and they told me it wasn’t broken, but it was. It didn’t heal quite right. Otherwise, I am back to being as good or better than before.” The therapists noticed that. “The physiotherapist would get Elvi up walking, which she hadn’t done prior to her breaking her hip,” explained Chella. “We worked together to get her up walking to get her to her wheelchair. We worked as a team and witnessed her getting healthier every day. She didn’t use a walker before, so we tried that. A family member came in and said ‘wow’ and that she couldn’t walk before. It was a total healing experience.” Elvi said she was always in good hands. “It was really good. When I was happier I noticed I was healing faster. I used a scooter for 30 years.” She went to the market every Saturday to purchase fruit and her healthy eating also played a part in her recovery. “Yesterday, the fruit man from Tofield dropped off some fruit for me,” said Elvi, amazed at the friendship that created. She began to rely more on her scooter than walking. That all changed when the St. Mary’s team helped her turn the clock back to a happier time.

Curling Club president receives NACA Award of Merit By Murray Green

Rose City Curling Club president Neil Bratrud received an Award of Merit from the Northern Alberta Curling Association at the Granite Curling Club. June 6. The Award of Merit criteria for the volunteer category recognizes contributors to curling for outstanding service to a curling club, the NACA or curling in general. In the 2012-13 curling season, Bratrud accepted the position of vice-president of the Rose City Curling Club. He became president for two full seasons at a time when filling all volunteer board positions was a challenge. During his tenure, the board was without a vice, or past president. This resulted in much more responsibility for him as he simply fulfilled all duties and tasks required. Bratrud represented the club and handled every situation, whether it was negotiating lease details with the City of Camrose, assisting the club manager, or promoting the club. He

was not afraid to take the microphone on league nights or special events to thank the volunteers and sponsors, to encourage teams to enter bonspiels or to recruit volunteers for events. His involvement on the board of directors brought a youthful enthusiasm to the

club. Bratrud was directly responsible for recruiting other new members to fill directors’ positions on the board, which further added to the enthusiasm. He will remain on the board this fall as past president. Bratrud is a member of the board of directors for the

Camrose Academy of Curling (CAC) Society and has been since 2013. The mandate of the CAC is to partner with educational institutions and recruit students on a local, regional, provincial, national and international level. There is the potential to develop an international sporting school. The CAC is a joint effort between the RCCC, the Battle River School Division and the University of Alberta Augustana Campus. He volunteered as an assistant coach for the Augustana Vikings men’s curling team for two seasons (2012-13 and 2013-14). When Camrose hosted the 2014 Canada Cup, he held a volunteer position in marketing and corporate ticket sales. Bratrud took on a few roles related to the mixed doubles provincials held in Camrose in 2014. He was involved in submitting the bid to host the event, as well as organizing the booking of hotel rooms, assisting with

announcing on television and entering the line scores on the NACA website. Bratrud has volunteered to assist with marketing, sponsorship advertising campaigns and social media for the upcoming 2016 Boston Pizza Cup to be held in Camrose. He was a competitive curler early in his school life, earning the silver medal in the 2005 High School Provincials, winning the Mixed ACAC Championships in 2008-09 and 200910 (he was selected as the all-star skip both times), and competing in several Men’s Northern Playdowns and the 2014 Mixed Doubles. Even with his competitive nature, Bratrud does not hesitate to team up with beginner curlers in mixed leagues or bonspiels. He worked tirelessly with the various club committees to prepare for special events, bonspiels and playdowns hosted by Camrose.

Camrose Police Report July 3

A woman contacted police and advised she met a person on a dating website and after an online relationship was formed, she sent him money through a bank transfer. The woman was provided advice not to send money as this is a common scam to obtain money from peo-

ple living in international countries. Police received a complaint from an east end business that in June a man paid for a piece of equipment using a cheque and the bank notified the business that there were no funds to pay for the product. The same suspect has done this at another business in

Camrose. Police are investigating both incidents. During patrols a man was noted to be yelling and screaming from a parking lot. Police spoke with the 22-year-old intoxicated man. The man was having some family issues and was upset. The man was left in the care of a friend for the evening.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson O Canada – with gratitude

On Canada Day, at our annual family gathering, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing my children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and their children playing indoor Pictionary and outdoor soccer. As I watched, I was remembering conversations I’ve had lately with people who have come to Canada from other countries. I was so grateful that my precious extended family members all live in countries where they can play in safety. *** For about a year and a half, our household was involved with a family who was trying to get a little girl and her mother out of Pakistan. In Pakistan, among the incidents that happened to the mother were police coming to issue a subpoena for the mother to appear in court for actions that never happened. The police said that they could make the subpoena go away – for a price. At one point, the mother and her three-year-old daughter were required by the court to be available for three hours every week outside the same Lahore courthouse where a woman had been stoned to death by her father and brothers because she dared to marry someone without her family’s permission. During the stoning, some people ran to police – part of “security” around the courthouse – to stop the stoning. The police declined to intervene. *** The day before Canada Day, I had a conversation with a woman who volunteers for a project to help women in Rwanda. One of the stories she told me was of a young man who now lives in Canada. When he was 10 (supposedly after the genocide had stopped), this young man’s Tutsi family was awakened in the night by someone telling them to flee because the Hutus were coming to kill them. As he was fleeing, the 10-year-old witnessed his father being killed by machetes. He was able to hide in the jungle for a few weeks before reaching a place of refuge and sometime later came to Canada. In order to survive after the genocide, some Tutsi women married a Hutu man. The young man’s mother was one of those. In the occasional communication between the mother in Rwanda and the son in Canada, it seemed that things were not that great, but she thought she could manage. Then came news that she was dead. Her husband had killed her. While she was in her chair, her husband stoned her to death. There were no repercussions for the husband. *** I believe our country could be better, and some days I do rant about that. Our justice system and our culture may indeed have imperfections. But on Canada Day, watching my family at play, I thought how fortunate we are to live in a place where we don’t have to fear the intensity of corruption and violence that people face in some other countries. Our physical “risks” (at least in my case) often have more to do with my klutziness than risk of being killed by violence. Sometimes the risks we fear most are emotional: we might be embarrassed in public or experience emotional pain. Our financial “risks” might mean we have to scale back our lifestyle, but we won’t be homeless or starve. Sometimes what we fear is inconvenience (I might not be able to watch a favourite program when I choose). *** I did not “deserve” to be born in a country where we can live in safety most of the time. In many parts of the world, things we fear would not make the cut as something to cause worry or distress. My family and I did not “deserve” the luxury of relative safety; we are just lucky. The least we can do is be grateful. And I am. If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send an e-mail to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com

UNIDIRECTIONAL FLUSHING PROGRAM

Why the City of Camrose is implementing the Unidirectional Flushing (UDF) Program: 1. To maintain and improve the City’s water quality. 2. To improve water flow and pressure in the water distribution system. 3. To reduce bacterial growth, restore disinfectant residual, and improve water color. 4. Unidirectional Flushing uses 40% less water than traditional flushing programs due to increased water velocity. 5. In addition to scouring the water pipes, the UDF Program also gives the City the opportunity to check, exercise, and maintain all water valves and hydrants. The UDF program will begin July 9, 2015, starting with Zone A and will continue for 2-3 months. Water service should not be disrupted during the flushing process. There may be a slight drop in pressure or a presence of discoloration in the water from the minerals and sediments being flushed from the pipes. If discoloration is noticed, please turn the tap off for 15 minutes and flush from your bathtub tap until the water is clear. If there are any questions or concerns in regards to the Unidirectional Flushing Program please feel free to contact Emma Knapik at the City of Camrose Engineering Department at 780-672-4428. For additional information please visit the City of Camrose website at www.camrose.ca.

Academy of Dance grandparents’ tea

Dancers from the Camrose Academy of Dance performed for residents and staff of Sunrise Village and Brookside at the United Church April 26 and 27. Submitted

On April 26 and 27 pre-school dancers from the Camrose Academy of Dance performed for residents and staff at Sunrise Village and Brookside. Dancers then performed on stage at the Camrose United Church for 186 family and friends.

Dancers range in age from three to six years. These little dancers entertained their audience as they performed with such charm. This event was especially memorable as some dancers performed for their very first time on stage. Dancers are taught by instructor Frances Snow-

don, who has been with the academy for seven years. Demonstrators are Jessica DeHoog, Payton Rootsaert, and Leah Simonot. Helpers for the event were Natalie Stephan and Courtney Bratrud. This event received help from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.

CAFCL serves 499 people in 22 communities By Dan Jensen

The Camrose Association for Community Living provided services to 499 people in 22 communities and employed 105 people between April 2014 and March 2015. “We strive for quality services and take very seriously the trust of families, individuals in services, guardians and funders,” said a report provided by CAFCL president Jason Schiele and chief executive officer Esther McDonald at the CAFCL annual general meeting June 16. CAFCL’s Teaching Independence and Parent Support (TIPS) program and Parent Child Assistance (PCAP) program focus on prevention of disabilities through proper nutrition. “One of the things we have found is that nutrition is really important,” said McDonald. “Alberta Health has created a curriculum for us to use while teaching cooking using crockpots. It is cool to see the young moms going home with meals for a week for their kids.” The Jobs 4 You program helps youth who have dis-

abilities obtain paid employment. “We don’t want to be in competition with other organizations that are doing employment services but there is a need for teens who have disabilities to get some support in finding employment,” said McDonald. “Last week we had another

placement for a young man at Rona.” The residential program has 11 residences, four of which are owned by CAFCL. “Everyone we provide support to (through the residential program) has different needs,” said CAFCL adult services director Leevi

Hafso. “Some need help with their grocery shopping, some need help with cooking, some need help getting to their doctor’s appointments and some need help with their personal care. We want to individualize our service to every person.” CAFCL’s newest residence provides three barrier-free spaces on the main floor, which is accessible through a lift in the garage and a ramp off the deck, as well as three accessible and affordable housing spaces or apartments in the basement for those who have disabilities (but do not require accessible adaptations) and need day to day assistance. `”We have had two people move in already,” said McDonald. “Everybody is getting geared up and we are hoping to be completely going by July 1.” The TIPS and PCAP programs served 315 individuals, the Rose Club 39, the residential program 33, Kandu Camp 33, the sexuality/education program 31, the outreach program 26, MORE 16, support homes eight and brain injury outreach five.

The CAFCL vision is that each person is an accepted and participating community member. CAFCL had 91 volunteers who, over the course of the year, gave 1,903 hours of their time. “All 91 volunteers played a crucial and vital role in this organization,” said McDonald. “They brought much: skills, advice, experience, knowledge, connections, friendships, vision, leadership and inspiration.” The CAFCL operating budget for the year was $5,576,004. Eighty-seven per cent of the funding was from provincial and federal sources. Proceeds from the annual char ity auction i n O c t ob er t ot a l le d $104,000. Members of the CAFCL board of directors are Schiele, first vice-president Andrea Campbell, second vice-president Dave Kotyk, secretary Esther McDonald, treasurer Colin Atkinson and directors Keith Lyseng, Christine Rebus, Cheryl Carter, Cam Parker, Michelle Colombijn and Kristy Smith.

CAFCL recognizes Volunteer and Corporate Champions

Dave Kotyk, Keith Lyseng, Michelle Colombijn and Ron Grue shared the CAFCL Volunteer Champions award at the CAFCL annual meeting June 16. By Dan Jensen

Camrose Association for Community Living presented its Volunteer Champions award to CAFCL housing committee members Michelle Colombijn, Dave Kotyk, Keith Lyseng and Ron Grue June 16. “These volunteers are responsible for making the vision of a barrierfree residence a reality,” said CAFCL chief executive officer Esther McDonald. “They gave endlessly of their time: from researching lots, designing the home, moving the sheds, installing water and sewer lines,

completing subdivision applications, selecting contractors, developing budgets, attending City council meetings, the list goes on. They gave the gift of their time to make this happen. I am humbled by their generosity of spirit and their compassion for their fellow human beings. They did not ask for accolades but gave their time generously without expectation of reward.” Scholarship CAFCL presented its $2,500 human services scholarship to Jennifer Knopf.

“Jennifer has felt drawn to the human services field since she was a small child and has devoted the last 18 years to CAFCL,” said scholarship presenter Robin Good. “She is clearly dedicated to assisting individuals to find their voice, and works to create a culture that values the importance communication plays in minimizing behaviours of individuals.” Knopf has been accepted into the Special Needs Educational Assistant online program through MacEwan University.

Jason Schiele presented the Corporate Community Champion award to Betty Mayer from Central Agencies. By Dan Jensen

Camrose Association for Community Living named Central Agencies as its 2015 Corporate Community Champion June 16. “(Central Agencies) is a very strong and stable organization and a cornerstone of our community,” said CAFCL president Jason Schiele. “(Central Agencies’) involvement in various areas of the community can be seen in the places that we go, the events that we attend. Many groups and organizations have been the beneficiary of their support and their continued efforts to raise a good community. They provide a good model for others to follow and maybe even a benchmark. We have heard them say ‘to determine what kind of community you live in, take a look at how vulnerable citizens are treated.’” A long-time supporter of CAFCL, Central Agencies has been serving the real estate goals and insurance needs of families and businesses in east central Alberta since 1963. The Corporate Community Champion award was created to recognize businesses that make significant contributions (monetarily or support) that assist CAFCL in carrying out its mission and vision.

Government brings in new rules to restore democracy Alberta’s new government opened the legislative session with action to renew democracy and restore stability to health, education and other vital public programs. The Speech from the Throne, read by Alberta’s Lieutenant Governor, Her Honour, the Honourable Lois Mitchell, announced that Bill 1, An Act to Renew Democracy in Alberta, will fulfill the government’s promise to end corporate and union donations to political parties. “Past governments were too dependent on funds from

a narrow range of donors with deep pockets, and too far removed from the interests of ordinary people,” said Premier Rachel Notley. “We will tilt the playing field back in Albertans’ favour, so their interests will always come first with government.” An interim supply bill was introduced to roll back health, education and human services cutbacks that Albertans voted against in the recent election, and provide stability to key public services, including the public health and education systems, and

supports for children, families and Alberta’s most vulnerable citizens. “This bill will ensure that hospitals can continue to care for the sick, that schools have what they need to educate our children, and that the most vulnerable are protected,” said Premier Notley. A full budget will be introduced in the fall. Bill 2 of the session will be An Act to Restore Fairness to Public Revenue. It will include a modest increase in corporate taxes for profitable firms, and the reintroduc-

tion of a progressive income tax for earners at the highest income levels. Under the new tax structure, Alberta will continue to have the lowest provincial taxes in Canada. “We’re asking those who benefited the most from the boom times in Alberta to contribute just a little bit more to help keep essential services strong,” said Premier Notley. “This was a commitment we made in our campaign, and it will ensure that Alberta can continue to invest in the public programs Albertans rely on every day.”

BRCF looks back and ahead By Dan Jensen

A new hobby: weeding

There is a time warp that occurs when I enter my garden. I open the gate, intending to spend a few minutes perusing the plants, seeing what is coming up, what might need to be replanted and if there are any volunteer sunflowers that need to be moved. Before I know it, I am weeding and rearranging and somehow 20 or 30 minutes has disappeared. There is something soothing about gardening, about pushing a seed into the earth and then watching as it springs forth and turns into something large, lush and amazing. It brings to mind the lines from one of my favourite Dixie Chicks songs: “I want to touch the earth, I want to break it in my hands, I want to grow something wild and unruly.” Okay, except not too unruly! There are so many metaphors for life in gardening. Planting reminds me to take the time to grow new hobbies and friendships. Weeding reminds me that we need to continually weed out bad influences and poor habits we’ve developed. Watering reminds me of the difference between our needs and wants in life, and that it’s best to develop a thankful attitude when our needs have been met instead of continually wanting more, bigger and better. I know a number of people who have felt exasperation at their attempts to hone their green thumb, and I think part of the solution is attitude. I approach gardening as one big experiment, which makes it exciting instead of disheartening. I don’t view it as failure versus success. If I have way too many zucchinis, I plant fewer next year. If I wish I had more peas, I can plant more the following year. If my corn is a complete flop, it is not a personal statement against me. A good friend of mine doesn’t find gardening appealing, so her husband is in charge of their garden patch. Due to his long work hours during the week, he has asked her for help. She told me that she agreed, as long as she didn’t have to do any weeding. I made an appropriate “totally, weeding really sucks” face in agreement, but here’s the truth: I like weeding. We recently drew up a list of household chores to get our two older children involved in the running of our home. My husband suggested that weeding should be added to the list, because it can be a real chore as the summer wears on. Again, I made an appropriate “yes, weeding can be such a chore” face and said sure, add it to the list. (Though I wondered, is it a chore if you enjoy it? Or should it be thrown into a list such as “my hobbies are painting, weeding and scrapbooking?”) I view it as a challenge to determine which plants are weeds and which ones were actually started by me. Some weeds are very clever, and look just like the carrot plant they are beside. Each year, I am getting better at this, but occasionally I still ask my mom to help me identify a plant/weed. I’ve even tried tasting a plant to determine what it is (though I wouldn’t suggest this method as apparently a young stinkweed tastes exactly the same as romaine lettuce). When I’m done weeding, the garden looks tidy, and I’ve given the plants a better chance at life. With three little ones underfoot, I’m not always gardening at the most opportune times. In bad mosquito years, I have donned a mosquito jacket complete with full head covering so that I can be out there at dusk. This year I was planting annuals in my containers well into the evening. The stillness outside as the evening grew darker was glorious, broken only by the beating wings of a pair of ducks descending to a pond. I arranged, added soil and then I heard a strange sound: I was trying to place it when I realized that our 90-pound outdoor dog was snoring loudly from beside the front door. Definitely my cue to head to bed! Here’s to another season of garden “experiments.”

Battle River Community Foundation’s former executive director David Stolee reviewed the past while vice-chair Vivianne Grue provided a glimpse into what is yet to come at the Foundation’s annual open house June 18. Board chair Blain Fowler gave an account of the here and now (Camrose Booster, June 30 issue). Stolee explained that the history of the Community Foundation is all about people and the importance of community. “We’ve often heard that it takes a village to raise a child,” he said. “Similarly, it takes a community to raise a community foundation.” Stolee said the three names that always come up when discussing the creation of the Foundation are Louise Jensen, Len Frankson and Norm Mayer. “My understanding is that Norm and Louise talked together about new ways to fund community services where the needs were always greater than budgets would cover. Louise had information about community foundations from visiting family in Ontario and Len was aware of them through his contacts in recreation.” Jensen and Frankson were members of the Foundation’s first board of directors (as appointed by a committee of nominators), along with Ken Drever, (Dave) Stolee, Alan Fielding, Blain Fowler, Gerrie Dey, John Gust and Max McLean. “The first board meeting was April 25, 1995,” said Stolee. “(As treasurer) I ended up leaving with the cardboard box with the cheque book and a few other papers. There was $1,842 in the bank.” Stolee credited Central Agencies for providing meeting space for the Foundation, The Camrose Booster and the Norsemen Inn for providing the seed money for start up expenses through the putt of a lifetime contest at Jaywalk-

ers’ Jamboree, Community Foundations of Canada for providing valuable contacts and funding for operating expenses, local accountants, lawyers and financial planners for advice and encouraging their clients to make gifts to the Foundation, the Rotary Club of Camrose for creating a $100,000 fund with proceeds from its Sow & Reap raffle (which doubled the endowment funds held but also added a great deal to the Foundation’s visibility), and all those who gave back to the community with their generous donations, including an anonymous donor who offered generous support for administrative expenses as well as flow-through grants, always conditional on the Foundation adding matching amounts of unrestricted endowment funds. “Some community foundations have been started with a single large fund, often created by a wealthy donor,” said Stolee. “Ours didn’t. Hardly anyone knew that we existed or what we hoped to do. Building awareness was a major priority. It took a lot of friends.” Stolee praised the dedicated and committed board members who have been diligent and creative in spreading the word about the Foundation and gathering the donations. “By now there have been 33 different board members, all appointed by an independent committee of nom-

inators,” he said. “Besides growing the Foundation the board has initiated other projects, such as a significant environmental initiative in 2003, and the highly successful Reading University, first held in 2009.” Stolee said the success of the first 20 years of the Foundation is worth celebrating, but is only the beginning. “I expect that the next 20 will be even more wonderful.” Grue said the BRCF will continue to strive to earn the trust of community members so that they will serve as ambassadors for all the good work the Foundation is helping to achieve. “Testimonials are the best thing we could ever have to promote the Foundation.” Grue predicted the Foundation will continue to grow, even at an accelerated rate. “I hope that many will see the BRCF as their charity of choice, as it can and does reach all sectors,” she said. “The Foundation is able to address the diversity of changing needs over time in all of our far flung communities.” Grue said the Foundation today has much to celebrate. “When the community comes together in caring and sharing, everyone’s lives are enriched. The Community Foundation is the right vehicle as it allows granting across all sectors to help make good things happen.”

Police run in Fallen Four Relay

Members of the Camrose Police Service team who participated in the Fallen Four Relay June 7 are, left to right, Const. John Sangster, Const. Brett Jackson, Const. Russ These and Const. Matthew Wilton. Team sponsors were the Camrose Police Association and One Tooth Camrose. By Dan Jensen

Camrose Police Service members Matthew Wilton, John Sangster, Brett Jackson and Russ These participated in the Fallen Four Relay – a marathon distance run that is split into four legs to signify the fallen four officers from Mayerthorpe – June 7. “We captured first place in our emergency services category and also had the fastest total time compared to all other four-person teams,” said Wilton.

The Camrose Police Service has entered a four person team in the Fallen Four Relay for the last five years. “We have now captured first for three years in a row,” said Wilton. “In the other two years we placed second.” The Fallen Four Relay starts in Mayerthorpe and ends in Whitecourt. In 2014, the Fallen 4 Marathon Society proudly distributed $29,000 to numerous non-prof-

it organizations. In six short years, the Fallen 4 Marathon Society has donated over $178,000 back to the communities of Whitecourt and Mayerthorpe. The communities of Mayerthorpe and Whitecourt were devastated by the deaths of four RCMP officers – Const. Peter Schiemann, Const. Leo Johnston, Const. Anthony Gordon and Const. Brock Myrol – on March 3, 2005.

Biensch commits to University of Alberta Augustana By Murray Green

Lukas Biensch has committed to play for the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings for the 2015-16 season. The former Spruce Grove Saints forward played three years in the Alberta Junior Hockey League before graduating to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference.

He spent two and a half years with the Lloydminster Bobcats before joining the Saints last season. He scored 17 goals and added 44 assists for 61 points in 120 regular season games. “First of all, I’m very excited to join the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings. It is a prestigious program and

is the best fit for my family and myself. I wouldn’t have this opportunity if it wasn’t for the tremendous support I’ve received over theyearsfrommyfamily, mybillets, teammates, coaches, volunteers and fans,” said Biensch. “Thank you to the Lloydminster Bobcat organization for giving me a chance to play

for my hometown. I’ll always remember my time as a Bobcat. I’d also like to thank the Spruce Grove Saints organization for giving me an amazing end to my junior career. It’s a truly first class organization and I’m honoured to have been a part of it. To my teammates, I want to thank you for always chal-

lenging me to grow as a player and person. The memories and friendships we’ve shared will last a lifetime. I’d like to thank my family. My parents and brothers were always there for me over the years. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for my family. I’m truly blessed.”

BRSD trustees approve budget for 2014-15 school year At the June 11 meeting, the Battle River School Division board of trustees approved the budget for 2015-2016. The reinstatement of funds from the provincial government will mean that expenses related to the anticipated increase

in student numbers can be covered. Salary increases and lump sum payments to all staff groups will be covered by the budget as well. In addition, the board has allocated dollars to ensure staff are able to participate in professional development and

has reinstated the Board Innovation Fund, which makes dollars available to support new projects or ideas which may come up over the course of the year. With increasing costs, finances are still tight. As a result, BRSD will

continue to run with two vacancies at the division level – the division psychologist counselling position, and a computer technician. The board has also reduced its own professional development budget for the year ahead. Capital projects

The board approved a motion to recommend to Alberta Education and Alberta Infrastructure that a construction contact for the replacement of Bashaw School be granted to OML Construction. The school is slated to open in the fall of 2016.

Royal Canadian Legion celebrates impressive cenotaph By Murray Green

The Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion and the community joined together to celebrate the new cenotaph location on Canada Day. Legion president Bob Burt led the ceremonies and passed the microphone to Comrade Ragnar Gislason. “The monument serves as a reminder to those who sacrificed their lives so we may enjoy our freedoms now because of it. Your sacrifice has made Canada the great nation that it is today,” said Comrade Gislason. Chaplain Mary Ann Pastuck spoke about the dedication of the monument. “When all of the people had crossed the River Jordan, God said to Joshua, choose 12 men, one from each tribe. Tell them to take 12 stones from the very place where the priests are standing in the middle of the Jordan. Carry them out and pile them up at the place where you have camped tonight. So Joshua called together the 12 men who were chosen. He told them, go into the middle of the Jordan in front of the arc of your God and each of you must pick up a stone and carry it on your shoulder, 12 stones in all, one for each of the 12 tribes of Israel. We will use these stones to build a memorial. In the future when the children ask you what these stones mean, then you can tell them they remind us that the River Jordan stopped flowing and the arc of God’s covenant went across. These stones will stand as a memorial among the people of Israel forever. Joshua also set up 12 stones in the

middle of Jordan where the priests were standing and they are still there to this day,” she read. “As we dedicate this war memorial, it is not enough for us to remember. This should be a day of dedication in which we resolve that these dead should not have died in vain.” Tyler Weber spoke on behalf of MP Kevin Sorenson. “Our nation has always stood with our allies to secure peace and live freely with democracy and human rights under the rule of law. Canadians have always

been a free and democratic people who embrace dignity for all,” he said. He mentioned the numbers of Canadians that have served in various conflicts. “This cenotaph is a very important and special place for our veterans, their families and for all of us. It will serve our community for many years to come. It is a place to remember who we are and the high price for our way of life. It is for our children to ask us about the sacred importance.” MLA Bruce Hinkley brought greetings from the province. “This moment will

come and go, but this cenotaph will be here forever to remember those who gave their lives for the sake of Canada, the ideals we represent, democracy and freedom,” he said. “This cenotaph is an honour to our community, an honour to all Canadians.” Camrose County councillor Trevor Miller spoke on behalf of Reeve Don Gregorwich and the rest of council. “This is a great location and people will remember as they drive by. Nov. 11 is the day we remember, but it is only fitting that we are commemorating this move

on Canada Day because without the sacrifices we wouldn’t be celebrating this day, Canada Day.” Mayor Norm Mayer said we have a country to be very proud of. “It is important for us to remember. This cenotaph will serve for many years to come and is in a good location. The cenotaph is an excellent presentation forum to acknowledge the folks that fought for our country to provide us with the lifestyle that we enjoy.” Wreaths were laid by the guest speakers and the Legion president.

Camrose Public Library takes to the road By Dan Jensen

Camrose Public Library has taken to the road with its new book bike. “It’s basically a cargo tricycle with a box on top that is loaded with books from the library and travels to parks, seniors’ homes and other locations,” said Camrose Public Library director Deb Cryderman. “People are able to browse the selection at any of its stops, pick up a book they have reserved, sign something out or make an e-reader download. The bike makes scheduled stops Tuesdays to Thursdays (visit the CPL website for times and locations) and pop-up visits at other city locations on Mondays. “The driver goes just where she feels like on Mondays and sets up for an hour or so before moving to someplace else,” said Cryderman. The idea for a book bike came about after the Camrose Public Library reviewed its 2014 summer program and found that most of the 1,932 kids who participated were from an area close to the library. “We realized that the kids from the far ends of town couldn’t make it to us so we thought we would go to them,” said Cryderman. “With the book bike the programs we offered at the

library can now be offered at the parks.” Camrose Public Library purchased the bike from Green Gear after a successful online indigos cam-

paign last December raised approximately $3,000 over the span of eight days. The library also raised an additional $2,300 to pay for the helmet of the driver,

an umbrella, craft supplies and a portion of the operator’s wages. “We had great community support,” said Cryderman. “When people heard

what we were doing they were more than happy to buy in.” The bike will eventually be equipped with a wi-fi hot spot, so that people will be able to connect to the Internet without using the data that comes with their mobile device. “The idea is to provide as many services with the book bike as we can,” said Cryderman. The book bike is the only one in Alberta and may possibly be the only one in Canada east of the Rocky Mountains. “I know there are a couple of them in British Columbia and a whole bunch of them in the United States where they are quite popular in areas where there are a lot of people without homes,” said Cryderman. “I have had libraries from all over Alberta calling and e-mailing me for information about how we were able to get the bike and how we were able to put everything together.” Camrose Public Library held a book bike launch party June 25 just in front of the library (the avenue was closed) complete with trike races, games, displays and t-shirt sales. “The launch was in place of the tea party that we hold every spring,” said Cryderman. “We had people join us for a couple of hours of good fun.”

The link between the arts and your health By Lucy Ernst, Community Health Promotion Facilitator, Alberta Health Services

As a member of the local Alberta Culture Days planning committee, I am often asked how my role as a Community Health Promotion Facilitator is linked to arts and culture. My reply is usually lengthy, due to the many studies that make positive connections to the arts. In 2010, the American Journal of Public Health published a review titled, The Connection Between Art, Healing, and Public Health. In that article, researchers analyzed more than 100 studies about the impact of arts on your health. The studies included everything from music and writing to dance and the visual arts. Here are the findings from five visual arts studies mentioned in that review. Each study examined more than 30 patients who were battling chronic illness and cancer. The research-

ers described the impact that visual art activities (painting, drawing, photography, pottery, and textiles) had on the patients: – “Improved well-being by decreasing negative emotions and increasing positive ones” – “Improved medical outcomes, trends toward reduced depression” – “Reductions in stress and anxiety” – “Increases in positive emotions” – “Reductions in distress and negative emotions” – “Improvements in flow and spontaneity” – “expression of grief” – “positive identity and social networks”.But the benefits listed above are not only great for patients battling chronic illness and cancer, but for everyone. The Arts Health Network Canada website states that the arts contribute positively to maintaining or enhancing individual and community wellness, supporting at least eight of Health Canada’s 12 key determinants of health (social support networks,

education and literacy, employment /working conditions, social environments, personal health practices and coping skills, healthy child development and health services). The website also states that participation in the arts, whether more passively as a spectator or more actively when engaged in creative expression, seems to activate known mental and physical mechanisms which reduce tensions, strengthen the immune system and protect against depression. Participation also widens social networks, reduces feelings of isolations and marginalization, giving a feeling of connection or belonging to a group. Contributions to individual and community health from participation in the arts include: participation in the arts correlates with greater longevity and positive perception of one’s health; engaging in arts programs enables seniors to live independently lon-

ger and reduces use of doctors, medications and medical facilities while enhancing the quality of life; arts empower youth, especially at-risk-youth, to succeed in school and develop skills and relationships that contribute to success later in life; arts and creative arts therapies provide avenues for healing for those who have suffered from trauma – war, other violence, neglect, accidents and natural disasters. Arts facilities, centres and programs are used in the UK and in the US to regenerate economically and socially depressed neighbourhoods. A r ts activities provide vehicles to explore solutions to pressing social issues – addiction, drinking and driving, street racing, bullying, domestic violence, etc. The effects of participating in the arts on specific health outcomes require ongoing evaluation, but evidence to date is highly positive and

recognized around the world. Interested in dabbling in the arts but not sure where to start? Join in on the local festivities to celebrate Alberta Culture Days, held each year on the last weekend of September. This three-day, province wide celebration of the arts and culture showcase’s the province’s artists, art organizations and cultural industries and encourages Albertans to engage in the arts and promote the importance of arts and culture. The Camrose Alberta Culture Days planning committee has been working for months on creating a schedule of events with a wide variety of arts and cultural experiences for citizens of all ages to enjoy. From live music to painting to a cultural walk in historic downtown to street performers, there will be something for everyone. CSL adds zing to liberal arts education By Dan Jensen

The Community Service Learning program at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus is helping students make meaningful contributions to the community. “Through their service learning placements they are gaining the skills and the knowledge to do community engagement work,” explained Augustana assistant professor and Learning and Beyond director Karsten Mundel at Augustana’s Community Awards banquet. Community Service Learning is an assignment in a course in which a student spends approximately 20 hours engaging in issues with local organizations or businesses. “It is different from other assignments like papers, quizzes and exams,” said Mundel. “It can play an important role in a liberal arts education

and help us move beyond a model where we see our students as empty vessels, as glasses that need to be filled with knowledge to one that engages them in a dialogic, in a conversation, a relationship, where together we discover meaning and understand that the challenges that we face in the communities where we find ourselves. “It is a great way in which we can challenge some of the shortcomings of a banking model of education.” Community Service Learning students in one of Mundel’s classes created a newcomers’ program at the Camrose Public Library where approximately two times a month (depending on the month of the year), there is programming (such as English as a Second Language training) that is offered to people who have come to

Camrose from other countries. “As I and my team of folks at the Learning and Beyond office were running around Camrose chatting with folks, over and over we kept hearing that there are newcomers, often temporary foreign workers but others as well, who have trouble making connections in the community that they find themselves in and that they are contributing to,” said Mundel. “The students, rather than hearing me say profound things about immigration or simply going to the books about immigration, have some first hand experience with these newcomers and the issues that they face. They learn what questions the newcomers are asking. It is a rich way for them to learn. I think these students will be very well equipped after graduation to take on similar challenges in whatev-

er communities they find themselves.” The Community Service Learning program has helped at least one student discover her future vocation. “This student wasn’t quite sure where she wanted to go, what she wanted to do with her life (after university), said Mundel, “so she used Community Service Learning as a way of exploring that. Through placements at the Camrose Women’s Shelter, the Children’s Health and Mentorship Program (CHAMP) in the Battle River School Division, and Brookside Manor where she did sit and fit exercisers for the folks, and by actually working with occupational therapy in Edmonton, she discovered that really what she wants to do is work with an occupational therapist. She now has applications out across the country to different occu-

pational therapy programs with hopes of becoming an occupational therapist.” Mundel said the Community Service Learning program shows Augustana how it can take liberal arts of what some call the ivory tower and out of the campus and take it for a walk in Camrose and beyond. “It helps us prepare our student to make meaningful contributions to the community while they are studying here.” Anyone wishing to put the bright minds of Augustana students to work and see what the liberal arts can do for their organizations is invited to call Mundel at Augustana. “Lets scheme together or dream together ways in which we can engage our students in your needs and the challenges that you face in your organizations,” said Mundel. “My door is always open and I would love to chat with you.”

Ken Drever By Dan Jensen

The Battle River Community Foundation will pay tribute to Ken Drever at its annual Community Builders’ dinner Friday, Oct. 23. “Ken is one of our strongest supporters,” said BRCF treasurer Imogene Walsh at the Foundation’s 20th anniversary open house June 18. “He has supported many organizations and communities in our area.” Drever was the founder of Drever Agencies, which started in 1949 in Hardisty as a supplier and distributor for BA Oil. By the time he retired in 1994 he had dedicated 45 years to the company. In 1952, he married Iris, and with her had three daughters and four sons. He is currently the Battle River Community Foundation’s past president. The Battle River Community Foundation created the Community Builders’ dinner to honour and celebrate local heroes who have given elbow grease, time and commitment, and have shown leadership in making their community a better place. Phyllis and Joe Voytechek were honoured at the first (Camrose) dinner in 2004, followed by Berdie and Bill Fowler in 2005, Fran and Red Elliott in 2006, Arlene and Alver Person in 2007, Bitz O’Riordan in 2008, Jeanette and Bernie Boser in 2009, Gail and Dave Stolee in 2010, Betty and Norman Mayer in 2011, Valerie and Alan Fielding in 2012, Ally and Kevin Gurr in 2013, and Margaret and Bob Prestage in 2014. Funds raised at the Community Builders help establish or add to endowments set up in the names of the honourees. “We are thankful that Ken has allowed us to use his good name and spread the BRCF message so that good things can happen,” said Walsh. Tickets for the dinner may be obtained from any member of the Battle River Community Foundation board of directors.

Gerlinde Jutta Cegielny October 8, 1941 – June 10, 2015 Gerlinde Jutta Cegielny of Camrose, formerly of Lac La Nonne, concluded her adventures in life on June 10, 2015. She was born October 8, 1941 to loving parents Erich and Gertrud Jahns in Berlin, Germany. In 1965, she and her new husband Claus began their 50 years of marriage by immigrating to Canada and settling in Edmonton. Once her two children were school aged, “Mrs. C” spent the majority of her career as an elementary school secretary with Edmonton Catholic Schools and as a chairperson for the Alberta Education Attendance Board. She cherished the students, colleagues and families she served and whose lives she touched. In 1973, the family purchased their beloved lake lot at Lac La Nonne, where she enjoyed nearly every weekend, moving there to retire in 2001. In addition to nurturing her love for world travel, her time retired at the lake was spent communing with nature, socializing with dear friends on Duncan Road, walking Nelly, and seeking out the best spots to pick mushrooms. In 2014, Gerlinde moved to Camrose to be closer to her family. A woman of great integrity and inner strength, Gerlinde will be remembered not only for her love of life, music, sport, and culture but also for her eternal optimism, independence, generosity and wonderful sense of humour. Left to honour and live on in her spirit are her husband Claus; children Thomas (Kathleen) Cegielny of Red Deer, and Petra Cegielny (Sean Moore) of Camrose; sister Ortraud Wentzlaff and niece Kerstin Wentzlaff (Aylin Nacar) of Berlin, Germany; and many dear friends. Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 9, 2015 from the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus Chapel (4901-46 Avenue, Faith & Life Centre, Camrose, Alberta) with Rev. Bill Harder officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Cross Cancer Institute. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

2015 Grand Caravan Minivan with the driving dynamics of a sedan

John Wigston By Dan Jensen

The 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan at Camrose Chrysler has been Canada’s bestselling minivan for more than 30 years. Aggressive feel

Grand Caravan’s design is intended to convey the dynamic driving nature of the vehicle. A front fascia that sports the Dodge signature “split-crosshair” grille and quad headlamps combine for an aggressive feel. A sculpted rear fascia and rear “ring of fire” LED taillamps completes the look from the front to the back. The segment-exclusive Stow ‘n Place roof rack system provides the convenience of crossbars without compromising aerodynamics, since they attach to the side rails when not in use. Both the power liftgate and the power sliding doors feature obstacle detection, which reverses the door’s direction if an object is sensed in its path. Quiet Steel technology works to ensure a quiet cabin. Performance From the state-of-the art high-pressure die-cast aluminum block and VVT to sequential multiport fuel injection and high-flow intake and exhaust ports, the 3.6 litre Pentastar engine applies some of the most advanced automotive

engine technologies. The result is an exceptional blend of high torque, fuel-efficiency, low emissions, and quiet ride. The only thing better than numbers like 283 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque is the engine’s durability enhancing features, like an advanced oil filter system that helps eliminate oil spills and contributes to more environmentallyfriendly disposal with its incinderable filter element. The engine delivers highway mileage of 7.9 litres per 100 km and 12.2 litres per 100 km city, and a segmentexclusive fuel economizer feature that alters shift patterns to help improve realworld fuel efficiency. It’s also Flex Fuel capable, offering the choice of using either gasoline or ethanol (E85) fuel, or any combination of the two. Nobody does it better The comfort, luxury and superior craftsmanship of the Grand Caravan is a guaranteed double take. Well-appointed interior design details include soft-touch surfaces, chrome accents and must have features intuitively placed for ease of driver and passenger use. The integrated instrument panel offers a unified look with touches of chrome around the climate controls, shifter and gauge cluster

rings. The LED-illuminated gauges are positioned for easy viewing and the steering wheel houses cruise and audio controls. An available class-exclusive Super Console features generous storage accessible by both firstand second-row passengers, and a top tray cargo space that can be covered with a sliding door to keep travel items out of sight. The console’s four cup holders include two that can hold 355-mL cans and two that can accommodate up to one litre bottles. The available tri-zone automatic temperature control system keeps everyone comfortable via its electronic thermostats, and the push of a button activates the available classexclusive full-circumfrence heated steering wheel, keeping the driver’s hands warm. Grand Caravan’s interior was intuitively designed to flip, fold and tumble with your needs. With the ability to carry up to seven people, an amazing amount of cargo or any combination in between with 81 possible seating configurations, neither your crew nor your cargo will feel the squeeze. Bringing home purchases from home improvement or big box stores isn’t a problem either. Simply stow secondand third-row seats into

the floor with the available Super Stow ‘n Go to reveal a flat floor with 4,072 litres of cargo space without ever having to remove a seat. Even everyday errands are made easier with Grand Caravan. The 225-mm deep in-floor storage bins behind the third row allows you to load and unload groceries with ease, without worrying about produce running out and under the seats. Let me entertain you The available segmentexclusive second- and thirdrow independent DVD entertainment system features nine-inch screens, two sets of wireless headphones, a remote, and input jacks to accommodate gaming and video possibilities during long trips to virtually eliminate the “are we there yet?” questions from the passengers. Best of all, the screens can work independently, with one showing a movie while the other is used for video games. The video system can be operated from either the rear seat entertainment unit or the radio head unit. Whether your passengers are watching a DVD or listening to your favourite music, everyone will appreciate the available nine-speaker Infinity sound system with an 11-channel amplifier that serves 506 watts of power. An eight-

inch, two-channel, dualvoice coil subwoofer means superb quality surround sound for everyone. Safety In adverse weather conditions, the standard Electronic Stability Control with Electronic Brake Assist works with an advanced all-speed traction control system to help the driver maintain vehicle directional stability and limit oversteering or understeering. Electronic Brake Assist detects conditions when maximum force is needed for optimum stopping power. A new driver’s inflatable knee blocker helps reduce injuries to lower extremities on impact with the dashboard and helps properly position the driver in relation to the front air bags. The Blind Spot Monitoring System continually monitors blind zones on either side of the vehicle. When an object is detected, an indicator light illuminates in the appropriate exterior mirror and an optional audible notification is provided. You can see the 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan at Camrose Chrysler on Highway 13 East. Phone 780672-2476 or toll free, 1-800563-4202 and ask for a member of the friendly sales team.

Axemen shut out defending champs By Murray Green

The Camrose Axemen got a little revenge when they knocked off the defending North Central Alberta Baseball League champion Edmonton Blackhawks 3-0 on June 24. The victory not only gave the Axemen a solid grip on first place with an 8-2 record, but they received the satisfaction of beating the two-time champions. The Blackhawks beat Camrose in the final playoff series last summer. Pitcher Blair Mulder

was the hero for the Axemen as he tossed a complete game shut out at Harry Andreassen Field at Kin Park. He pitched a five hitter while walking one and striking out eight Edmonton batters. Mulder out dueled Blackhawks lefthander Kyle Lawrence to record the win. Camrose only needed three hits to score the three runs. Riley Guntrip, Dylan Borman and Mulder provided the pop in the lineup as the Axemen scored once in the first inning and twice in the fourth. Two errors from the

Blackhawks also helped the Camrose offence. Mulder improved his record to 3-1 with a 1.64 ERA in four starts. The win also extended the Axemen’s winning streak to eight games. The next Axemen home game is on Wednesday, July 8, against the Sturgeon Paladins, starting at 7:15 p.m. Other home games for the Axemen are on July 14 and a doubleheader on July 19. The final home game is slated for Aug. 12. Action for the home doubleheader on Sunday begins at 1:30 p.m.

Wheeldon to play for Thunder By Murray Green

Graduating Camrose Kodiak player Adam Wheeldon has accepted an offer to attend Concordia University in Edmonton next fall to play for the Thunder. Kodiaks coach and general manager Boris Rybalka feels the 20-year-old will have an impact from day one with the team. “His style of play will make him a fan favourite and opposition players will need to keep their heads up when he is on the ice,” warned his former coach.

“Coach Dan Glegloff is excited about having Adam attend Concordia as he sees his leadership and compete level paying dividends to the program.” The Kodiaks organization congratulated Adam on his achievement. “You were a pleasure to coach this past year and the impact you had on the team for your on ice work ethic and leadership will be carried on for years,” added Rybalka. Wheeldon had 10 goals and 24 points with the Kodiaks in the regular

season. He scored a goal and added five assists in 12 playoff games. Bear facts The Next Wave Hockey Development camp is slated for Aug. 16 to 20. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Next wave of training arriving for Kodiaks By Murray Green

The Camrose Kodiaks will be changing training methods next season. Starting this summer, Camrose will have two skating treadmills and some other new equipment. “There will also be synthetic ice surfaces where players will be able to practice their shooting, stick handling, passing and face-offs,” said Kodiaks coach Boris Rybalka. Goaltenders will also have an area for their training purposes. “This has been in the works for about five years and it is finally coming to a reality,” said Rybalka. “Personally I have wanted to see something like this in our community for years. With the cost of renting ice and trying to get the extra help to develop skills, it has become very difficult and expensive for parents and players. Now you can

develop your entire game at our facility at a fraction of the cost players currently pay.” As many as eight players can be on the skating treadmill at one time in a rotating fashion. While they are on the skating treadmill, other athletes will be able to be improve their skills on the synthetic ice. Sessions will be from 30 minutes to an hour in length (combined treadmill and synthetic ice). “Imagine the change in your game because now you can get the extra shooting or skating on a weekly basis,” added Rybalka. An open house will be held when the facility is in full operation. “We have a great location and easy access to our facility thanks to West End Storage as we have rented a building behind Royal LePage on 48 Avenue for our training centre,” the coach said.

CITY OF CAMROSE UNDERTAKES INITIATIVE TO CREATE A CULTURAL MASTER PLAN At the present, there are already many cultural opportunities provided either directly by the City or indirectly by other government agencies, volunteer organizations or private enterprises. However, these providers either work independently or even often in conflict with one another while providing similar services or opportunities. The City of Camrose anticipates having a Cultural Master Plan will reduce these inefficiencies and conflicts and ultimately benefit end users and the organizations themselves. The City of Camrose is looking for a consultant to work with it and other organizations in the region to create this master plan. For more information about this project, visit our website at www.camrose.ca.

Vehicle engulfed in flames after driver swerves to miss animal June 25

A call was received in the early hours of the morning about a vehicle fully engulfed in flames at Highway 833 and Highway 617. RCMP attended along with the Round Hill Fire Depart-

ment. The vehicle was found to be empty. The driver was found a short distance away and it was determined that the driver swerved to miss an animal, lost control and the vehicle got stuck in the ditch. In the attempt to try

and drive the vehicle out of the ditch, the grass under the vehicle subsequently caught fire. No injuries were sustained. A country resident called the detachment to report that he had purchased a quad a

few years ago off Kijiji and had just sold it. When the new owner went to register it, the quad had been listed as stolen. The previous owner had searched the VIN # when he purchased it, and it had not been listed as stolen

at that time. This matter is still under investigation. RCMP also responded to two 911 hang ups, three dangerous driver complaints, three false alarms and two animal related collisions.
