Hinkley elected as MLA for Wetaskiwin-Camrose By Dan Jensen

The Orange Crush was flowing at the Terracotta Cafe in Wetaskiwin last Tuesday night as NDP supporters celebrated victory for both their candidate and their party. “It is a very historic day in Alberta,” said Wetaskiwin-Camrose MLA elect Bruce Hinkley. “The polls were predicting a NDP win, but they didn’t know whether it would be a minority or a majority.” Hinkley finished the evening with 7,525 votes (44 per cent of the total), approximately 6,000 more than he received as the NDP candidate in the 2012 election. PC Verlyn Olson finished 1,578 back with 5,947 votes, while Wildrose Bill Rock was third with 3,686. “I wasn’t expected to win here,” said Hinkley. “The fact that I did win makes it doubly rewarding.” Hinkley expressed appreciation to Olson and to Rock for being very polite and gentlemanly during the election forums. “I want to thank Verlyn for the many years of service he has given to the people of this riding,” he said. “I think Verlyn is well respected and has done a lot for the riding, but he got caught up in the failings of the Progressive Conservative Party. I appreciate all the things he has done and hope he will have time to sit down with me and orient me to what it takes to be a good MLA.” Hinkley saw his support from voters build as the campaign went along. “Our (association) membership doubled and then it almost tripled, and the number of volunteers was greater than last time,” he

Bruce Hinkley and his wife, Janet, celebrated election victory at the Terracotta Cafe in Wetaskiwin May 5.

said. “Our door knocking was phenomenal as well. There were a number of people who made the point that they had voted for another party in the last election, but this time were going to vote for me. They had decided that they wanted to see a change and felt that the New Democrats deserved a chance.” Hinkley believes Rachel Notley’s leadership style resonated more with the voters than that of Jim Prentice. “I think the change we saw here was a combination of Rachel’s rising star and Prentice’s fading star,” he said. “Rachel is very well spoken, very articulate and has a group of solid supporters. I got the sense from lis-

tening to her victory speech that she is reaching out to the other parties, the other provinces and the federal government. She is not closing doors, but opening them for families and business, which I think is a very positive sign for Alberta.” Hinkley sees balancing the budget and stimulating the economy as two of the New Democratic Party’s greatest challenges. “It’s going to be difficult because we don’t control the international price of gas and oil, but when I look at the success that Minnesota, Alaska and Norway have had in addressing their problems I have faith that we can have success as well,” he said. “They were

dealing with the same economic pressures and have been able to do a great job for their province, state or country.” Hinkley drew fire throughout the campaign about the NDP plan to increase taxes for corporations. “There were people who were concerned about that but again, the Parkland Institute at the University of Alberta has shown through its research that it is actually feasible and doable without causing any real hardship to the corporations,” he said. “The corporate tax rate was much higher when Lougheed was premier and everybody admired what he did, so

a two per cent increase is not radical. The governor of Minnesota implemented a two per cent corporate tax rate and was able to go from an unbalanced to a balanced budget, cut unemployment in half and create 172,000 jobs over four years.” Hinkley is encouraged by Notley’s interest in working with the corporate sectors. “She is talking about job creation in Alberta by having refineries here rather than exporting raw bitumen to Louisiana or Texas and moving the jobs there,” he said. “She is going to be good for Alberta and will allow the corporations to still make a lot of money.” Hinkley hasn’t yet been given any indication of what role he will be asked to play in the new NDP government. “They didn’t expect me to win, so I am not sure what role they will have for me,” he said. “I will accept whatever they give but with 54 MLAs and just 16 or 17 cabinet positions it is hard to say. I would be honoured to hold a number of the postings, but at this point it is just pure speculation.” Hinkley is floating the idea of moving the constituency office to different cities and towns over the next four years. “I had support from all areas (of the constituency) and I want to be available in all areas,” he said. “I will see if the party office agrees with the idea and if it does I will check back locally with my stakeholders, volunteers and organizers to see what they think. It would be different to have the office rotating around.”

RELAY FOR LIFE FUNDRAISER

Murray Green, Camrose Booster The Camrose Relay for Life team of left to right, Ashley Swedberg, Charlene Holmberg, Ryan Weiss of Aaron’s Sales and Leasing, Trish Knudson, Lucky Dog and Dana Holmberg held a barbecue to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society on April 25. The Relay for Life is on June 20.

Camrose County Reeve Don Gregorwich congratulated Premier-elect Rachel Notley, Wetaskiwin-Camrose MLA elect Bruce Hinkley and Battle River-Wainwright MLA elect Wes Taylor on their election victories. “Camrose County looks forward to continuing to work with our provincial representatives to grow rural Alberta,” said Gregorwich. “Camrose County is a vibrant and presssive agricultural community supported by many small businesses. Camrose County will continue to be a strong advocate for agriculture, business and community, while providing those core services needed to keep our communities viable and healthy. The NDP won 53 seats with 41 per cent of the vote, the Wildrose Party 21 seats with 24 per cent and the Progressive Conservatives 10 seats with 28 per cent. Hinkley was a school teacher at Smoky Lake for 14 years and served as a volunteer on several community organizations. He finished third out of five candidates in the 2012 provincial election with 1,578 votes. He was also a candidate for the Forum Party in the provincial elections in 1993 and 1997. Wes Taylor is the owner of a self storage business in Wainwright, as well as a general contractor and volunteer firefighter for Wainwright Fire and Rescue. He has a Bachelor of Education degree and taught in various schools through the Battle River -Wainwright riding.

Olson taking time to be with his family

Verlyn and Mardell Olson watched the election returns at the Bittern Lake Hall. Olson is hopeful that more young people will start to become involved in politics.

By Dan Jensen Verlyn Olson will be spending the next few weeks and months getting reacquainted with family. “I have seven years of catching up to do,” said Olson, who lost his seat as the PC representative for Wetaskiwin-Camrose May 5. “I have four wonderful grandchildren, including a nine-year-old who is really excited about baseball, and I am looking forward to spending more time with them.” Olson isn’t in a hurry to charge into anything new. “I am just going to take a breather,” he said. “I am still recovering from my islet transplants and it was very tough to campaign. I really had no energy to door knock or anything like that so I need to have a little bit of time to regain my health entirely. I am going to be very active but I just want to get better first.” Olson had a difficult time getting a read on the campaign and how things would turn out. “I knew there was a possibility that we (the PCs) would lose,” he said. “I was telling people that we could win big or that we could lose big. Obviously we lost big.” Olson felt the desire for change was stronger in this election than the two previous elections he had been a part of in 2008 and 2012. “There were specific issues that gave people problems like the stance on corporate tax and the early election call, but underneath it all was Albertans saying it was time for a new government,” he said. “There were people who were calling us

the tired old PC party, even though they had been MLAs way longer than most of the people in our caucus.” Olson congratulated both of his opponents – Bruce Hinkley, of the NDP, and Bill Rock, of the Wildrose. “You have to respect anybody who steps up and runs, win, lose or draw,” he said. Olson predicts the NDP will have a huge challenge in setting up a new cabinet. “If Rachel (Notley) wants to have a cabinet of between 15 and 20 people that means she is going to have to appoint somewhere in the order of 15 brand new MLAs. My questions then have to do with who we are going to see as the finance minister, who we are going to see as the energy minister, and near and dear to my own heart, who we are going to see as the ag minister. Whether there are people to do it is something that we will just have to wait to find out. I am not saying it can’t be done, but it will be difficult. In fairness, I was the justice minister and got moved to agriculture, and everyone knows that I am not a farmer.” Olson would not have resigned his seat, as Jim Prentice did, if he was elected. “It is a great honour to ever be elected and when I think of how hard my team worked, I know I could not have done that,” he said. “Even if I wanted to I could not have done that. He (Prentice) is in perhaps a different circumstance given his position and I am certainly not going to judge that. For me, though, I would have stuck it out.”

Olson is proud of the fact that he has been part of Alberta’s political process. “I doubt whether I would get back into it, but I always say never say never,” he said. Even the campaigns I have won and the campaigns I have lost have been wonderful experiences.” Olson is hopeful that more young people will start to become involved in the political arena. “One of the positives coming out of this election is more young people becoming engaged,” he said. Olson stressed it is important that the NDP continue the work of the PCs in building strong trade relationships. “You need to be out there on the road building relationships with people in Asia, Europe and India,” he said. “There isn’t a substitute for that. You can’t do all that by phone from home or expect everybody to come to you. I hope they are very aggressive on that front. Otherwise we are going to get beat to the punch by a lot of our competitors.” Olson is nervous about the NDP plan to increase taxes on corporations by two per cent. “Corporations tend to get lumped together as being somehow evil yet 95 per cent of corporations are small businesses – mom and pop operations and grass roots Albertans,” he said. “Taxing them more at this time I think is a threat in terms of jobs. Same thing with minimum wage. I hope the new government moves very cautiously in that area.”

Taylor excited about opportunity to represent Battle River-Wainwright

Wes Taylor was impressed with the job done by the Wildrose Party in the election campaign. By Murray Green

Battle River-Wainwright Wildrose Party candidate Wes Taylor is in the house. The newly elected MLA received the most votes in the constituency in the May 5 Alberta election. “The results for myself, I was very pleased with and humbled. The people have given me the nomination, so that was absolutely fantastic. Overall, I think the Party did an amazing job considering we only had a leader for a little over a month,” said Taylor as he collected election signs the next day. “Leader Brian Jean did an amazing job and we went from five seats to 21 seats. We will continue to do our job as the opposition. I haven’t heard yet what my responsibilities will be, but I will continue to fight for rural Alberta.” Taylor wasn’t surprised the PC’s ended up in third place. “The poll people kept telling us that the NDP were going to form the next government. When I went door to door, people were saying they wanted change. In the cities they wanted NDP but out here in rural Alberta they wanted Wildrose. Our party aligns more to what the rural people want in government. We want to protect rural people with property rights and the past government had not done that,” he said. “We stand for lower taxes. People just wanted a change. As the opposition we will hold the government to account. We have been the most effective opposition in the past.” Wildrose had 17 seats in the last election, but several members crossed the floor, or retired, leaving them with just five MLA’s prior to the election. “Now we are stronger then we were before,” said Taylor. “I believe we have a really good place to go from here. The future is very bright. I was very pleased with what Brian Jean was able to do. We wanted to fight for lower taxes, health care and education because they were the concerns of Albertans. “People just didn’t like the way the government was run. They didn’t like the way people were just allowed to just cross the floor. I don’t know how many times I heard that. We will be pushing for those that want to switch parties to hold a by-election or operate as an independent. “I want to thank Blake Prior and Ron Williams for running and debating; they did a great job.” Unofficially, Taylor of the Wildrose Party received 6,790 votes; Blake Prior of the Progressive Conservatives received 5,056 votes; Gordon Naylor of the New Democratic Party collected 3,808 votes; and Ron Williams of the Liberals had 573 supporters. In Alberta unofficially, NDP had 53 seats, Wildrose 21, PC 10, Liberals one and the Alberta Party one. One seat was tied, so a recount or by-election will be held.

Stoney Creek Lodge closing By Dan Jensen

The Camrose and Area Lodge Authority will be closing the doors of Stoney Creek Lodge at the end of May. “We made the decision to close it quite a while ago,” said CALA chair and City councillor Max Lindstrand. “We are finally at the stage now that we are ready to proceed.” The numbers of Stoney Creek Lodge have been declining over the last year. “We haven’t been accepting any more applications in anticipation of the completion of the addition to Rosealta Lodge,” said Lindstrand. “At last count we had 13 residents who we will now be moving to other locations. “Our hope is to be able to find a home for them by the end of May.” The decision to close the lodge comes out of financial necessity. “The efficiencies are just not there when you have such small numbers,” said Lindstrand. “We are running really serious deficits on a monthly basis so we need to take action.” A potential new home for the residents – at least until the Rosealta addition is completed – could be the lodge in Bashaw, which is also part of the Camrose and Area Lodge Authority. “It is a fairly new facility so we think a number of residents might take up on the offer to relocate there,” said Lindstrand.

OXYGEN MASK “May we have your attention please, for the following important safety demonstration?” As I look around at my fellow travelers (yes, it is true that I, in fact, am not paying much attention) I realize that these may be the most futile words ever spoken. Some airlines treat this demonstration routinely; some try to make it more fun; and some have resorted to a video demonstration. It still fails to get the attention of most passengers. In Canada we are privileged to be able to ignore all of this in both official languages. Still, there is one piece of that safety demonstration which always manages to catch my attention. “Please put on your own oxygen mask first, before assisting others.” I am, depending on my mood (which is usually determined by the harassment factor and the length of my waiting to actually board), revolted or perplexed by the notion. (At least on the cruise ships there is still the pretense if not the actual nobility of “women and children first”.) I am not sure about you, but if I am sitting next to my wife, my kids or grand kids, or even a stranger who cannot (for whatever reason) put on their own oxygen mask, every fibre of my being would scream “help them!” I am no super hero, I am not even particularly brave (usually more in need of a bib than a cape), but my whole life I have been taught to always take care of others and put them first. In fact, I have been rewarded for taking care of others and putting them first. I have learned that I feel good about myself when I take care of others and put them first. I can forget about myself and my problems, issues and concerns when I take care of others and put them first. Hey, wait a minute!?! Am I guilty of helping others as an excuse or an escape for not taking care of myself? Do I lose sight of my own need for care as I focus my attention on others? Am I avoiding taking care of myself under the premise that I am busy taking care of others? I have no doubt that there is a moral conditioning in all of us to help others and to put them first, and that is a very good thing. But, at some point we must take care of ourselves if we are going to be “fit” to take care of somebody else. I am still not likely to give as much attention to the safety demonstration as the flight attendants might like. I will, however, force myself to hear the airline wisdom that says, “take care of yourself first, so that you will be able to care of others.” Like so many of our fellow airline passengers, we can continue to give little heed to this safety demonstration. (We all know airline travel is exceptionally safe and we feel safe when we fly.) On the other hand, if nothing else, perhaps we can learn that it is a wise person who takes care of him or herself first, in order to be best able to take care of others.

REFLECTIONS

Camrose Police Service will be stepping up traffic enforcement By Dan Jensen

by Bonnie Hutchinson The tipping point

Wow! I didn’t see it coming. Last Tuesday evening, May 5, I was enjoying a family birthday supper and a concert. When we went into the Winspear Centre to be dazzled by possibly the greatest piano genius I’ve ever experienced, our little family group was curious about the election results. The polls had not yet closed. When we came out three hours later, Alberta’s political world had changed dramatically.

***

When I say I didn’t see it coming, I don’t mean I was oblivious to hints that something might change. I heard the conversations in coffee shops and elevators. I read about the polls. Like pretty much everyone, I knew lots of people were profoundly discontented. But that’s been true for many Alberta elections, and nothing really changed. I am old enough to remember the 1971 election when Peter Lougheed’s Conservatives swept away the Social Credit party. But that was movement from one conservative party to another – a different, more youthful package but similar underlying values and principles. “Alberta” and “majority NDP government” in the same headline? Based on living in Alberta for seven decades, with family roots that go back to the late 1800s, my brain could not put “Alberta” and “majority NDP government” in the same thought. On a scale of not believable, it’s right up there with “Toronto Maple Leafs win the Stanley Cup.” ***

The election results are making me think about tipping points and about inner and outer change. Malcolm Gladwell talked about tipping points. Something begins to change gradually. On the outside it looks like nothing is happening but on the inside something is changing profoundly. Then one day a “tipping point” is reached. The momentum of gradual change reaches the point where the balance shifts from “stay the same” to “change.” Example: A bridge begins to erode. Nothing is visible; the bridge looks the same. Tiny flaws may appear but they are not noticeable. Then one day the bridge collapses. It looks like a sudden occurrence that happened without warning. Actually it was the next step in a long process. Example: A niggle of discontent appears, and then another. A glimmer of hope appears, and then another. On the outside, it looks like nothing has changed. But on the inside, something has changed profoundly. Then one day, a huge event occurs. Someone leaves home, changes job, goes back to school, moves to a different country. The inner changes become visible outwardly. It may look like a big change that came from nowhere, but really it’s just the logical next step of a long, largely invisible process. ***

In the past few years, it’s become more obvious to me that some of the old structures of my life (old habits, old beliefs, old patterns) have become rickety and unstable, and are not serving me well. It’s also become obvious that some parts of my life have reached a tipping point and are changing dramatically, with or without my conscious permission. New opportunities – even new aspects of myself I’ve never noticed before – are emerging. At age 73, this is encouraging. The election results remind me that there is always the possibility of change, even unthinkable unbelievable change. ***

Once, when my Mom was in her nineties, I was ranting to her about something that offended me. My concluding comment was, “…and there isn’t a hope that our government will do the right thing.” My Mom said, “Well if that’s what you think, then you haven’t lived long enough.” Then she began to point out things that changed in her lifetime – starting with, when she was born in 1920, she was not considered a “person” in Canadian law because she was female. ***

So – for you and for me, what’s percolating inside on the way to a tipping point? What unbelievable opportunity – for good or not – could be emerging? Fun questions to contemplate. If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com.

Camrose Police Service will be joining police agencies across the country in stepping up enforcement of traffic laws during Canada Road Safety Week May 12 to 18. “If you drive in a manner that is aggressive and dangerous you are going to get caught, whether it is by us (Camrose Police Service), the sheriffs or RCMP,” said Const. Adam Belanger. Canada Road Safety Week is an enforcement driven initiative sponsored by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) and Transport Canada to increase compliance with safe driving measures and ultimately, to save lives. The program involves enforcement that focuses on behaviours that put drivers, passengers and other road users most at risk, including impaired driving, failure to wear seat belts or use child restraints and all aspects related to aggressive driving. The timing of the week is strategic, as more people are travelling and traffic crashes are more frequent.

“The week takes in the Victoria Day long weekend which is traditionally a very dangerous time of year,” said Belanger. “The good road conditions mean that people are a little heavier on the gas pedals in their haste to go places and do different things. They are driving with their windows open or, if they have a convertible, the top down and they are listening to music. They are not paying as much attention to what they should be doing.” Canada Road Safety Week’s end goal is to make sure that everyone stays safe. “We want everyone to go out and enjoy themselves and have fun but at the same time be responsible,” said Belanger. “The kids that are going to a bush party for example need to make sure that they have a sober ride when they come home.” Police will be stationing vehicles at key locations as a reminder that safe driving habits save lives and reduce injuries. “We are hoping that a lot of people see us,” said

Belanger. “We are going to be doing a lot of vehicle stops and issuing a lot of tickets.” The problem of impaired driving is one that is not going away. “The number of offences dropped between the mid 1980s and the mid 2000s, but now they are going up again,” said Belanger. “Impaired driving has been a recognized criminal act in Canada since 1921 and is the leading cause of criminal death in Canada.” Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2015 is a national effort to reduce the long term vision that Canada will have the safest roads in the world. Specific aims are raising public awareness and commitment to road safety, improving communication, cooperation, and collaboration among stakeholders, enhancing enforcement and improving road safety information in support of research and evaluation. More information about Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2015 is available at www. ccmta.ca.

ATB FINANCIAL DONATION TO FOOD BANK

Sorenson encourages applications for Universal Child Care Benefit Minister of State (Finance) and Crowfoot Member of Parliament Kevin Sorenson is advising constituents that the application deadline to receive the enhanced Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB) has been extended to May 15 so that more families can receive their UCCB cheque in July. “We are looking for hundreds of thousands of families not currently registered for the enhanced child care benefit,” said Sorenson. “I encourage all qualified families in our riding to make sure they are registered. We are asking for help from the media and the public to encourage

families to apply for the benefit.” The majority of families with children, approximately 3.8 million, are known and will automatically receive the enhanced UCCB or be contacted by the Government to confirm their information. However, an estimated 200,000 eligible families are not currently captured by the Government’s UCCB system and may miss out on receiving money that is owed to them unless they apply. Under the proposed enhancements to the UCCB, families would receive almost $2,000 per year for each child under six and $720 per year for each

child aged six through 17. The new benefit amounts would be retroactive to Jan. 1 and be reflected in monthly payments to families in July 2015. The proposed enhancements to the UCCB are expected to more than double the number of families that benefit from 1.6 million to more than four million. If your family is not currently receiving the UCCB, has never received the UCCB, or has never applied for the Canada Child Tax Benefit and you still have children under 18 in your care, please go to www.canada.ca/taxsavings to find out how you can apply.

Council closing in on decision on bridge underpass By Dan Jensen

City council will be waiting until its May 19 meeting to make a decision on whether or not to spend an additional $2 million to include an underpass in the 48 Avenue bridge replacement project. The estimated cost of building a bridge without an underpass is $5 million. Mayor Norm Mayer feels it is important to spend the additional money now. “This is the only opportunity that we will ever see in our lifespan to accommodate the situation,” said Mayer at council’s committee of the whole meeting May 4. “I acknowledge the concerns we have in other areas, but I think this is the only opportunity we have.” Councillor Agnes Hoveland said a vote against the underpass is one that council might regret in the future. “I still feel that 10 or

15 years down the road, if we do this now it will be a bonus for the community. So often with infrastructure we are asked why we didn’t do something.” Councillor Wayne Throndson said the underpass for him falls into the category of nice to have but not a must have. “It is ironic that we are having this discussion following a discussion on poverty. We have significant needs. A staggering percentage of people, from what we are told, are in desperate straits. I would have a tough time voting to spend $2 million to allow people to go under the bridge.” City infrastructure and planning acting general manager Jeremy Enarson told council that the underpass clearance and elevation requirements would necessitate changes to the grade of 48 Avenue. “The low point (of 48 Avenue) right now is the bridge,” said Enarson. “If

we were to be looking at a pedestrian underpass we would slide that low point of the roadway so that vehicles would basically start climbing right after they turn (east) at 53 Street.” The underpass would also require the construction of some form of retaining walls on the south side of 48 Avenue where the walls of the valley are steeper. “Additional geotechnical information would be necessary, particularly at the location of the proposed pedestrian underpass, as well as the corners of Mirror Lake where the trail would exit on either side,” said Enarson. “This information would be used in conjunction with the prior geotechnical investigation to help reduce the City’s long term risks related to building on poor substructure.” Administration is hoping to go to tender with the 48 Avenue bridge replace-

ment in late summer or early fall with the intent of having construction begin in the early winter months. “This type of project realistically is going to be a winter construction,” said Enarson. “You typically try to do work like this when you have frozen conditions in the lake. You definitely want to stay away from the summer storm seasons. It is a lot easier to deal with frozen conditions, quite frankly, than wet conditions.” The amount of time for construction would depend on whether or not there is a grade change. “With a grade change you would have to bring in a lot of material to build up the road,” said Enarson. Council was told at its April 20 meeting that a box culvert bridge design that was its initial preference during budget deliberations last fall may not be the least expensive option. “The existing bridge

and roadway structure were constructed on substandard material,” said Enarson. “As a result of this, AMEC (the design consultant) is anticipating that more work will be required than originally anticipated. Additionally, AMEC has identified that the box culvert option would likely end up being the more expensive option as opposed to a traditional bridge option which would use deep pilings to get below the underlying substandard material.” City administration is looking at a variety of funding options for the additional cost of the underpass, most of which would be coming from accumulated grants and reserves. As the City’s 10 year capital plan has identified uses for the accumulated grants, any additional grants allocated to the 48 Avenue bridge project would mean having to defer other capital projects.

Street Festival performers By Murray Green

The Camrose Street Performers’ Festival will pack a wide range of entertainment into one day, Saturday, Sept. 26. The Camrose Arts Society is planning several events in conjunction with Alberta Culture Days on Friday, Sept. 25 and the street performers on the next day. “Being a big fan of the arts, I always have liked street performers, which I first saw many years ago in Britain. Then, I began to see more of them in Canada in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Victoria. Eventually full festivals were established for street performing magicians, musicians, jugglers, mimes, comic acts and acts for the kids,” said Bob Kenyon, of the Camrose Street Performers’ Festival. “I’m originally from Edmonton and moved to Camrose, about a year ago. I’ve been very impressed with what a fun and vibrant city Camrose is. Camrose is doing an amazing job of providing entertainment.” Kenyon has training and experience in the tourism industry. “I’m aware that a major form of income for municipal areas and their events and attractions comes from tourism,” he said. “The renovation of the historic Bailey Theatre and the new Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre have added to the tourism value of Camrose.” Events like the Camrose Street Performers’ Festival will further add to the City’s value as a tourist destination. “The festival will also be our event that we can tell others about and invite performers we know to participate in,” said Kenyon. Performer application forms are available at camrosestreetperformersfestival. blogspot.ca. Applications will be accepted until the end of May. “We plan to have some local favourite performers on the street, as well as other Alberta acts, that want to play in Camrose,” said Kenyon. “As we progress with the planning we’ll need help from others, to move things around, set things up, take things down, care of the performers, give directions to visitors. Stay in touch with our blog and Facebook page, for this information.” The performers at the festival, will be paid just a small amount for participating. Anything else they earn comes from the audience. “If you like a performance drop some money in their hat, or open guitar case. Show your appreciation, so they’ll come back again,” said Kenyon.

City council sets 2015 tax rates By Dan Jensen

Camrosians with a typical residential property assessed at $271,214 will be forking over another $93 in taxes in 2015. “The tax increase for a typical residential property owner will be 3.28 per cent,” said assessor Travis Lantz in a presentation to Camrose City council May 4. “Municipal taxes will increase by 4.36 per cent, education will go up by .77 per cent and the lodge requisition will drop by 13 per cent.” The tax rate on a non residential property which saw its assessment grow by 1.93 per cent to $611,500 will increase by 3.45 per cent. “Municipal taxes will go up by 3.46 per cent,

education taxes will go up by 4.43 per cent and the lodge taxes will go down by 13.1 per cent,” said Lantz. “The result will be a total increase of $157,” The new tax rates will generate $22,714,621 for municipal purposes, $321,243 for the lodge requisition and $6,913,453 for the education requisition. “The total municipal tax levy is determined by the City budget,” said Lantz. “Council has control over the municipality’s total levy, but not the effect on each individual property.” The City of Camrose is required to collect the provincial education requisition on behalf of the province. All funds collected by the City are submitted to the province.

Loss of revenue The taxes for residential properties are being impacted by the loss of government grants. “The City lost $150,000 in revenue that came from the assessment of Alberta Housing Corporation properties valued at $18 million,” said Lantz. “Due to the lost provincial grants in lieu of taxes, a 3.42 per cent municipal tax increase will have a 4.36 per cent impact on residential properties.” Non residential properties were not impacted by the elimination of grants in lieu. Assessment growth The increase in the amount of dollars needed for municipal and education was offset by increases in assessment of $47,321,950

resulting from the sale of eight lots in Valleyview, 47 new lots in the Creekview subdivision, 107 single family dwellings (either began construction, continued construction or completed construction), basement developments, new garages, 13 four-plex properties, the partial construction of four new commercial buildings, the partial construction of six new industrial warehouse/storage buildings, one new airport hanger and significant renovations, additions and changes to existing properties. Assessments on the majority of Camrose homes has increased 2.3 per cent. “Eighty-two per cent of the 5,082 detached homes (not including duplexes, condos, townhouses or moblile

homes) had their assessments increased by between zero and five per cent,” said Lantz. “Ten per cent saw the assessments increase by five and 10 per cent and three per cent saw their assessments increase by 10 per cent or more.” About 250 properties (five per cent) saw their assessments decrease. Ninety-two per cent of the 946 residential condominium properties saw their assessments increase by between zero and three per cent. The biggest year for residential assessment growth was in 2009 when the total surpassed $80 million. Tax deadline The deadline for the payment of taxes to the City of Camrose is June 30.

Museum Society relinquishes control to City of Camrose By Dan Jensen

The City of Camrose has assumed control of the day to day operations of the Camrose and District Centennial Museum. “We (council) are going to be striking a new committee and appointing members to that committee to basically oversee the museum’s management,” explained Mayor Norm Mayer at council’s regular meeting May 4. Camrose Museum Society agreed to relinquish control of the museum as well as all outstanding financial documents following a May 1 meeting with the City’s finance committee and the treasurer. “We talked about having the City become involved in the restructuring of the management of the facility and asked for a letter from the society with their agreement or concerns in that regard,” said Mayer. The Museum Society will continue to be responsible for the maintenance, control and operation of all the artifacts at the museum and be able to present recommendations to the new management committee, which will then be relayed to council. “We have no intention of dissolving,” said Museum Society president Will Voth. All ground rules and terms of reference of the new committee will be set by council. “We will be advertising positions on the committee,” said Mayer. “If there is someone on the society who wants to put their name into this new committee that would be acceptable. If the society has any thoughts and ideas they want to get back to us they would work through the new committee to do that.” Councillor Wayne Throndson spoke for the rest of council when he said he does not want to see the museum lost. “I think it is a valuable piece of culture to the City of Camrose but we have to straighten out its term vision.” The City of Camrose put a hold on the Museum Society’s budgeted funds in an attempt to determine what was happening with the dollars that had been allocated. The hope is that those dollars will be re-instated under the new management structure. “We put a hold on the budget, so there will be some budget ramifications here that we have to address sooner rather than later,” said Throndson. Mayer said the key is to get and keep the museum operational. “We are all on the same page with wanting that to happen because there are many people who have given their heart and soul for many years to maintain what they have there. We want to avoid the concerns we have had the last little while and structure things a little bit differently.” Tourism Camrose expressed disappointment with the Museum Society’s decision to close the museum at all, yet alone right before the summer months when the tourist season is the strongest.

JAYWALKERS’ JAMBOREE PLANNING COMMITTEE

The 58th annual Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce Jaywalkers’ Jamboree on June 5 and 6 will have a 1960s theme. Members of the Jaywalkers’ Jamboree planning committee are left to right Chuck Erman, Colleen Labelle (chair), Jenni Routhier and Trevor Vinet. Jaywalker’s Jamboree is Alberta’s oldest outdoor fair. During the two-day event, Main Street (50 Street) is closed to traffic and becomes an outdoor trade show and fair featuring fantastic deals from local businesses as well as guest vendors.

Werner to receive Literacy Award On June 3 Barbara Werner will be presented with the Camrose and Area Adult Learning Council’s 2015 Literacy Award. She has generously shared her time and talents as a volunteer with several other organizations in Camrose as well. The presentation will take place in a 2 p.m. ceremony at Mirror Lake Centre (5415-49 Avenue). A short program will be followed by refreshments and an opportunity to congratulate Barbara in person.

Last October, Prime Minister Stephen Harper introduced the Low-Tax Plan for Families, which will provide benefits to four million Canadian families this year. Low and middle-income families will receive two-thirds of the overall benefits provided by this package. First, the new Family Tax Cut is aimed at couples with children under the age of 18, where one spouse is in a higher tax bracket than the other. Transferring up to $50,000 of income from one spouse to the other can lower a family’s overall tax bill up to a maximum of $2,000. Second, we have enhanced the Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB). Our Government is increasing the UCCB for children under age six. As of January 1, 2015, parents will receive a benefit of $160 per month for each child under the age of six – up from $100 per month. Parents will now receive $1,920 per child, per year. We are also expanding the UCCB to children aged six through 17. As of January 1, 2015 these parents will receive a benefit of $60 per month for each of these children. This amounts to $720 per child, per year. Next, we are increasing the Child Care Expense Deduction limits by $1,000 for the 2015 tax year. You or your spouse may be able to claim a deduction for expenses incurred for someone to look after your child so that one of you can work or go to school. Lastly, we have doubled the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit from $500 to $1,000 per child, starting in the 2014 tax year. Our Low-Tax Plan for Families is affordable, even with the current challenges confronting Canada’s — and Alberta’s – economy. What we have done is pursue a plan of balanced budgets and low taxes for families, for individuals, and for businesses. This past week, Justin Trudeau promised to raise taxes on thousands of middle class families by replacing the Family Tax Cut with his “Family Tax Hike”, and taking away your ability to save more through your Tax Free Savings Account. The Liberal Party will scrap the Universal Child Care Benefit which they have long said parents spend on “beer and popcorn”. The Liberals have also stated their ideologically opposition to income splitting and seniors should be worried. Finally, critics are citing a $2 billion short-fall in the Liberal plan and Justin’s reply has been that he will announce details on that at a later date. Our Conservative Gov-

2015 Ford Focus New design and advanced technologies

Craig Beddoes By Dan Jensen

The 2015 Focus at Lamb Ford Sales delivers a new exterior design, completely revised interior and advanced new technologies for improved customer comfort and safety. “The combination of compelling, modern design and the most high-tech interior in the class will appeal to contemporary customers who desire a small car with very sophisticated features,” said Lamb Ford sales manager Brett Read. “What makes Focus so attractive to consumers today – being great to drive, delivering exceptional fuel economy and value, and offering leading-edge in-car technologies – is amplified with the new Focus.” Exterior Available in four- and five-door versions, Focus features a restyled hood and grille, available signature lighting for the headlamps and taillamps, new rear lamp clusters and a restyled trunk lid. The Focus ST includes 18-inch Rado Grey aluminum wheels and 18-inch machined aluminum with

black-painted pockets as an option. Inside Inside, colours and materials have a clean, modern look, with satin chrome detailing, new seat trims, switches and an available heated steering wheel. Storage is improved with a new centre console incorporating adjustable cupholders, and a new, easier-to-access glove box. Technology Focus is as ready to make things happen as you are. Features including the SYNC® 6 communications system that helps keep you connected and the rearview camera that helps you see what’s behind your vehicle were designed to do more than complement your drive – they make it more convenient. The rearview camera appears on either a 4.2 inch screen or an eight inch screen that comes with MyFord Touch equipped cars. The available Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) uses rear radar sensors to help warn you when a vehicle is detected in your blind spot. And cross-traffic alert can help warn you of vehicles approaching from either

side when you’re slowly backing out of a parking space. Should a Focus driver start to drift out of the current lane without a turn signal on, the system provides a warning through a series of steering wheel vibrations that mimic a rumble strip. If the unintended lane departure is not corrected by the driver, the aid function of the system actively applies steering torque to help the driver direct the car back toward the centre of the current lane. Smart There’s smart. And then there’s smart done with purpose. The Focus was designed to keep you comfortable and in control down every road you travel. The available SecuriCode™ keyless entry keypad lets you conveniently unlock your vehicle without a key or push-button remote. Grabbing a cold steering wheel is a thing of the past with the new available heated steering wheel making those uncomfortably chilly days a little more comfortable. MyKey® encourages responsible driving by others when they’re behind the wheel of your Focus,

by letting you limit top speeds, decrease audio volume and more. Performance While Focus is always powered by driving dynamics, the big story this year is the innovative technology under the hood. The SE EcoBoost® package centres on the available 1.0L EcoBoost® I-3 engine—an engine that’s small, but packs enough punch to handle almost any driving situation powerfully and efficiently. Twice already, automotive journalists have named the EcoBoost® powerplant International Engine of the Year for 2012 and 2013. In Europe, where it is already on five nameplates, it accounts for 32 per cent of sales of the current generation Focus and 26 per cent of Fiesta sales. “The 1.0 litre EcoBoost® engine is proof that excellent fuel economy and performance can come in one package,” said Read. “Focys is already known for bringing together efficiency and fun, and the latest addition will bring consumers a whole new level of enjoyment.” The standard 2.0L TiVCT I-4 engine is flex-

fuel capable, so you can use either unleaded, E85 or any combination of the two. The Focus Electric runs exclusively on electricity – keeping you on the road and away from the pump. The Focus Electric is powered completely by a rechargeable stateof-the-art lithium-ion battery. That means it never needs a drop of gas or an oil change, ever. And being 100 per cent electric also means zero CO2 emissions-talk about improving your carbon footprint. The unique sport suspension offers excellent handling without sacrificing power. Suspension and shock absorber upgrades include a new shock absorber valve design providing improved interior quietness, a new electronic stability program system with less intrusion and improved comfort, and a change to the rear suspension to give drivers a more connected feel to the road. You can see the 2015 Ford Focus at Lamb Ford Sales, 3771-48 Avenue, Camrose. Phone 780-6722411 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

This practical experience tied-in nicely with our discussion of research methods and how information about crime and perceptions of crime is gathered by various agencies within the Canadian criminal justice system and by criminologists and other researchers.” The students also liked the idea of engaging with the community. “Augustana is always looking for ways to develop interesting synergies between the university and the community and to further enhance the city and grow relationships. Assisting the Camrose Police Service with the survey and getting the students out in the community, meeting and engaging with the people of Camrose, is a fantastic way for all parties involved to get to know one another better. It’s a win-win situation, and I hope we can do it again,” added Osborne. Chief Darrell Kambeitz said the U of A allowed for interactive communication with the citizens of Camrose, which would not have been possible without them. “The survey met our expectations and provides us with valuable information we need to develop ongoing business and strategic plans. I personally acknowledge the incredible work that the U of A faculty and students have put into this project and commend them for their efforts.” “We would like to thank the sociology/criminology 200 students who conducted this survey, Nick Yarmey – community service learning coordinator, Alexis AnderYOUNG FIREMAN son – supervisor student academic services and profesMurray Green, Camrose Booster sor Geraint Osborne,” concluded Bob Grant, manager, Three-year-old Blake Carstairs of Camrose attempts to take a Camrose Fire Department CALEA assessor standards management unit, of the truck for a drive during the Pancake Breakfast at the fire hall on May 3. Mission Award Jayakumar Nair, hospitality manager at Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose, centre, accepts a Mission Award for stewardship for his team in food services from Covenant Health board chair John Brennan, left, and president and CEO Patrick Dumelie.

Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose is an award winning place to enjoy a meal. The facility may not be known for its fine dining, but it is a healthy place to eat for patients. St. Mary’s earned a Mission Award showcased by its extraordinary staff in Camrose. These provincial awards honour those who provide care with integrity, compassion, collaboration, stewardship, respect and social justice. Each year, Covenant Health holds an awards ceremony to recognize individuals and teams that are outstanding examples of living our Mission of serving with compassion, upholding the sacredness of life in all stages and caring for the whole person—body, mind and soul, in all they do. There are six Mission Awards, one for each of Covenant Health’s values; compassion, respect, collaboration, social justice, integrity and stewardship. Employees, physicians, board members and volunteers are nominated by their peers, members of their communities, or by patients and residents. Six recipients, one for each value, were chosen at a Mission Awards Gala in Edmonton, held on April 16. Camrose earned three nominations from St. Mary’s Hospital—Dan Gillespie, a physiotherapist with the stroke team, Melissa Sztym, team lead for the stroke team and the food services team. The food services team was nominated for stewardship and received the provincial award for their work to serve patients healthier meals, while saving the hospital money. The team changed the menu to reduce sodium and wasted food, while allowing the food services staff to take pride in the meals they deliver to patients and customers. They have also started a recycling program, to benefit the environment. “This team provides quality and consistent services as well as healthy meals to patients and customers. We are really proud of their hard work,” said site administrator Cherylyn Antymniuk. Dan was nominated for integrity, which he displays in his work providing community members with rehabilitative care. Melissa was nominated for collaboration, which she uses to help implement stroke rehabilitation services.

Beautiful Valleyview townhouse

Vida Constance Innes June 2, 1920 – May 2, 2015 Vida Constance Berke was born on June 2, 1920 and passed away peacefully May 2, 2015 at the age of 94 years. Vida grew up on the family farm north of Kelsey and was the second oldest of eleven children. On August 27, 1943, Vida married Alexander Stephen Innes. After a short time, they moved to the family farm 10 miles south of Ohaton, where they lived for 30 years until they built a new house on the Albury School site. After Steve’s passing in 1980, Vida moved to Camrose, first in a three-bedroom apartment so the grandchildren could come and stay and she would still have a room for making her many quilts. Vida then moved to Parkview Place where she made many new and lasting friendships. Every year, we had the Innes Christmas in the common area of Parkview and Mom cooked the turkey and made her special homemade white beans. In 2009, after a mini-stroke, Mom moved to Louise Jensen, where she resided until her passing. Vida was predeceased by her parents Herman and Myrtle Berke; husband Steve; infant daughter Irene (1945); infant granddaughter Shauna (1964); four brothers Lloyd, Howard, Bernard and Victor; and four sisters Ellen, Lois, Hazel and Bessie. Cherishing her memory are her six children Dorothy (Gary) Meyer and their children Kim, Tammy-Rae, Sherry and Brad; Stephen (Kaye) Innes and their children Christine and Brian; Gordon (Evie) Innes and their children Tracy, Maureen and Mark; Verna Barkman and her sons Jason and Dallas; Elaine Twitchell (Brian Cutting) and her children Colin and Michelle; Darlene (Brian) Snider and their children Jesse and Hanna; 25 greatgrandchildren; brother Randall Berke; and sister Jessie Hall. A Funeral Service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, 2015 from Camrose United Church with Rev. Brian Hunter officiating. Interment has taken place in Melville Cemetery. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to Melville Cemetery Fund, or to the charity of one’s choice. Sharon Ganes Mrs. Sharon Ganes of Camrose, passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at the age of 58 years. Sharon Janet Rothenbusch was born on September 12, 1956 in Vancouver, BC to Jack and Janet Rothenbusch. As a girl, Sharon enjoyed attending Camp Luther, waterskiing and spending time with her many friends. She was raised in a Christian home and made a choice to follow Christ at a young age. Her first church home was First Lutheran Church in Vancouver, BC where she was confirmed as a teenager. After high school, Sharon ventured from home to attend Bible school at CLBI in Camrose. While there, Sharon met many lifelong companions and friends, including her future husband, Trevlyn Ganes. Their blossoming love led Trev to Mission, BC, taking a job as an apprentice to Sharon’s father. They found a new church home in Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church where they married on February 25, 1978. Sharon’s passionate heart for children led her to dream of starting a family and becoming a mother. Her dreams were realized in 1980 with the birth of her daughter, Leah Marie, and later with her son, Joshua Daniel in 1982. Sharon was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She taught her children about Jesus and what it meant to follow Him by serving others. Sharon was always a gracious hostess. She made her best efforts to ensure people were welcomed in her home and ensured they were well fed. She continued to host people in her home for special occasions or just for coffee wherever her growing family called home. She continued to connect with new friends as the family moved to Edmonton, AB. She especially loved her life and friends during her time living at the hog farm in Mission, BC. She continued to forge new friendships after settling back in Camrose. In the mid-’90s, Sharon opened a day home and began taking care of children in her house. Her love for children made this the perfect job for her. Caring for kids was something Sharon was very passionate about and something that kept her going. Throughout her life, Sharon enjoyed being creative. She was an excellent seamstress and she sewed beautiful outfits for her children. She enjoyed embroidery and crocheting as well. Sharon also enjoyed music. She faithfully attended band and choir concerts and enjoyed singing in the church choir. Sharon also enjoyed travelling and seeing new places. She was always up for a road trip and enjoyed some special trips with Trev to Mexico, Jamaica, Panama and, most recently, Tofino. Following her cancer diagnosis in 2006, Sharon persevered through treatment and pain and chose to live life on her own terms. She continued to take inspiration from the young children she cared for in her day home. She continued to serve and spend time with the people she loved regardless of her condition. She looked forward to sharing time with her family and friends. She remained faithful in prayer and thanksgiving to Jesus Christ her Saviour and shared her love of Christ with her grandchildren in order to pass it down to the next generation. Sharon will be fondly remembered by her husband of 37 years, Trevlyn; her children Leah (Jeff) Young of Okotoks, and Joshua (Jenny) Ganes of Vancouver; grandchildren Chloe, Lucy, Bennett, Amber and Isla; sister Shirley Schartner; brothers Mark (Lori) Rothenbusch and Daniel (Karen) Rothenbusch; and her parents Jack and Janet Rothenbusch; as well as many friends and relatives. She was predeceased by her brother-in-law Earle Schartner. Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at 1:30 p.m., from Camrose Pentecostal Church with Rev. Dave Hesje and Rev. Paul Knudtson officiating. Inurnment will take place in The Mission Cemetery at a later date. Learning Together program celebrates 10 years By Murray Green

The Battle River School Division’s Learning Together Outreach School offers a second chance for young women to complete their high school education. BRSD launched the program at Chester Ronning School 10 years ago. “It seems like yesterday, that our superintendant Dr. Warren Phillips at that time shared his vision for the program with us,” said Learning Together principal Ray Bosh at a 10th anniversary celebration May 7. “ From that first conversation it grew into something fabulous, unique and something very special for all of us.” “Ten years is a tremendous amount of time. It symbolizes the BRSD commitment and the board of trustee’s support right from the beginning. It celebrates the determination of a group of young women who have made it a priority to beat the challenges of obtaining a high school diploma,” said BRSD board member Lorrie Sitler. “Having been a single mom myself, I under-

Dr. Warren Phillips

stand the challenges of pursuing an education, while raising children. Every student that has finished this program has my deepest admiration.” Superintendant of schools Rita Marler added “One of the most remarkable things I have wit-

nessed is the strength of the students and their determination to make it through. I like to thank Dr. Warren Phillips, past and current staff members for their commitment to the program.” Former program director Maryanne Dalgleish-

Davis added her thoughts of the milestone. “I had the privilege of working with the early model after four years with Corinne Everington,” said Dalgleish-Davis. “I was absolutely amazed. The most amazing part is the child care program. The children of the women who attend school, also attend the accredited child care program. It takes a village to raise a child. This school is proof of that.” The day care has had 26 staff members and 166 children in 10 years. Early childhood development director Jolene Doig left her baby with the day care program while she went on a field trip with another child. “A women gasped at the thought of me leaving my baby at the day care. I thought it is the best day care in town and it is because of the caring staff that made it so great.” Former student Jenine Fehr explained her experience in the program. “My first day, I came

in with my one-year-old daughter, was pregnant and overdue with my second daughter, and I was 17 years old,” explained Fehr. “I had to finish Grade 9 and then venture into high school. Learning about parenting taught me a great deal. I appreciated the fact that my children were in the next room if my child ever needed me, while I was doing my studies. I didn’t realize college was an option for me until a life plan was made for me.” After obtaining her high school diploma she enrolled in university. The founder of the program started with a vision. “Children need a proper eduction to succeed in life. Statistics Canada reported that teenage mothers were 17 per cent likely not to complete high school and 20 per cent likely to enroll in postsecondary studies. Another study showed that the student success is linked to the level of education their mother has,” said Dr. Phillips. Continued on page 38

Outreach high school provides options for moms By Laurel Nadon

Brittany Johnson had a difficult time as a pregnant 17-year-old in her senior year of high school. She dropped out, just a handful of credits shy of graduation, in order to work and be prepared when her baby arrived. “I felt really awkward being in school and pregnant. I heard about the Learning Together program and thought it would be a good option for me,” Johnson said. After her son was born in July 2007, she began to attend the Learning Together program that fall, housed in Chester Ronning School with on-site day care. She chose to attend both semesters because she found it was an excellent program, where she learned important life skills such as budgeting, preplanning meals and meeting deadlines. “It’s a really great opportunity to meet other young moms. The program was fantastic and the day care was great,” Johnson said. “It made a world of difference to know that at any time I could go down and see my child. I’m proud of the fact that I graduated the program.” The Learning Together Outreach School is specifically designed to meet the needs of mothers who have had babies as teenagers. The program is celebrating its 10th anniversary and has helped 80 young mothers, including Johnson, to achieve their high school diplomas. An open house with tea and tours was held on Thursday, May 7.

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Brittany Johnson graduated from the Learning Together Outreach School in 2008. The program, designed for mothers who have had babies as teenagers and want to finish their high school education, celebrated its 10th anniversary with a celebration on Thursday, May 7.

Johnson noted that time was set aside for the mothers to have one-on-one time with their child during the day and they had journals to write about their experiences. She was also working part-time as a waitress at the time, but said it never felt like an overwhelming experience. “I’m a rather independent person, so I did as much as I could on my own,” Johnson said. “My family has

always been very supportive and there for me.” She said the biggest challenge she faced was getting her son ready in the morning in winter and getting to school on time. She hopes her story will show other women what they can be capable of and described taking part in the program as one of the best choices that a teen mother can make for herself and her children. Dr. Warren Phillips,

superintendent of schools at the time, began the program a decade ago. “There was a general concern that there were not educational opportunities for young moms,” said Diane Hutchinson, communications coordinator for Battle River School Division. “It can be really challenging for a young woman who has had a baby to finish high school. By helping that young woman to graduate, you’re positively influencing two generations.” She noted that research has shown that failing to graduate from high school often starts that cycle within a family. Some of the program graduates are trailblazers in their families, becoming the first member to finish high school. “It’s pretty gratifying to know that 80 women have achieved a high school education because of this program,” Hutchinson said. “Not finishing high school really limits your future.” An average of eight women per year have graduated, with a program maximum of 20 students per year. One of the graduates had a baby while in Grade 9, while other students who attend are in their late teens or early 20s with more than one child. Students can begin classes before their baby is born, and then newborns are welcome in the classroom for the first few months. The program has stayed essentially the same in the past 10 years, though the space has expanded. Stu-

dents and supporters also fundraised to add a playground on site that’s geared towards toddlers. “This year they are incorporating their programs much more with PACE outreach school and Camrose Composite High School,” Hutchinson said, noting that the program is now sharing teachers and integrating with option programs such as cosmetology at CCHS. Alongside the core subjects, the young mothers take parenting classes and learn about nutrition and immunizations. Hutchinson said that the students’ financial situations are a struggle, and it’s often difficult to transport their child to school if they don’t have a vehicle. “It takes a lot of strength and determination to make it,” Hutchinson said. “Graduates I’ve spoken with over the years are so very proud of the work they have done. For many of them, they see it as the door opening for a more positive future for them and their child. It’s a real important milestone for them.” Many of the graduates go on to further education. Johnson will graduate this spring from the University of Alberta Augustana Campus with a Bachelor of Arts, English major with distinction. She has given academic presentations at conferences and is planning to pursue a Master’s Degree. This year, she earned honourable mention for the Outstanding Undergrad Research Award.

Railway Station and Park ready for new season By Dan Jensen

The Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park is getting ready to start a new season. “We are excited about all the things that we have planned,” said Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park chair Glenys Smith. Opening day

Opening day at the station on May 16 will provide the opportunity to shop for collector and home made items at the white elephant gift shop, ride Percy the Train, watch the model trains in the garden railway, play and dress up in the Secret Garden and enjoy cool lemonade and cookies. “It’s a fun day that gets a pretty good turnout,” said Smith. Special guests in attendance will be the Love to Recycle team from the Alberta Beverage Container Recycling Corporation, a not for profit organization. “They (team) will have a 10 by 10 booth where they will be organizing games with prizes, setting up displays and giving a 45 minute presentation on recycling at 2 p.m.,” said station coordinator Pat Reiter. New signs

The station has developed three new signs that provide information about coal development on the prairies, the early grain eleva-

Serenity Price, 27 months, explores the Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park

tors and the Victory Garden, which ran most of the length of 45 Street. “Victory Gardens were developed in places like Camrose during the First World War to encourage people to grow their own vegetables, so that more could go towards the war effort,” said Smith. “It was a total community effort. Ron Bailey remembers how, as a child, he would come out to the garden to plant and weed

and play with others of his own age.” Garden garage sale

The station will be hosting a community garden alongside its white elephant gift shop from 1 to 5 p.m. May 21, 22 and 23. “We’re going to be having members of the Camrose Horticultural Society in attendance to offer free advice on gardening,” said Reiter. A plant sale and swap

from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 30 will provide the opportunity to purchase or swap some of the many plants that grow within the station gardens or have been donated by the community members, as well as various gardening pots and yard items. The annual garden tour and Victorian luncheon in the beautifully decorated Station Tea Room and the King George Room on July 11 will be followed by garden tours with Victorian desserts from July 14 to 18, and the Victory Garden dedication at 2 p.m. on July 25. “The garden was planted after researching organic practices that result in healthy plants without the use of herbicides or pesticides,” said Smith. A Tribute to Prairie Women at the station on Aug. 1 will celebrate women’s stories and contributions to the area’s settlement. “We encourage people to take part by wearing a hat or clothing from an earlier era,” said Smith. A Founders Days celebration on Aug. 15 will include fun children’s games, live entertainment by a swing band and an overall party atmosphere. Young and old will be able to ride the Mirror Lake Express train with char-

acters from “The Island of Sodor.” The last day of the regular season will be Aug. 29. “Enjoy the gardens and all the exhibits with family and friends,” said Reiter. Guided Walks

Canadian Northern Society will be offering guided walks along the historic abandoned rail line in Meeting Creek June 13. “The Society is remediating the grassland around the line to bring it back to its original state,” said Smith. The Camrose Wildlife and Stewardship Society, two students from the Community Service Learning program at Augustana and two members of the Canada World Youth program have developed information kits that fit in a backpack about the plants and birds along the line which can enhance the walking experience. The tours will be held in conjunction with a Meeting Creek ball tournament that is held annually to raise money for the Meeting Creek Community Centre. School tours

The Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park will be conducting interactive learning programs for Camrose and area school children starting May 20. Continued on page 39

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Learning Together celebrates 10 years Continued from page 32

“If the mother completes her high school education, there is a good chance the children will complete high school. Parents are the best teachers. However, the point that had the biggest impact on the board was that Camrose, which we believe to be an affluent city, in 2001 had 175 single parent families who were living in poverty. The children are as much a part of the program as the mothers. “I started just before my 15th birthday and was four months pregnant. I was scared, said graduate Krysta Feth. “I was going through the biggest change women can experience in life and I was still a child myself. I was embarrassed and knew I had a lot of growing up to do. The first thing that I knew was that I wanted to be a good mother to my unborn child. The second thing, is that I needed a high school diploma in order to go to post-secondary and have a career to pro-

vide for my daughter. Learning Together provided me with the opportunity to give me the best of both worlds. Marlene Edwards was much more than a teacher. Marlene taught me how in control of my life I was. She helped me accept people in situations that I did not understand. When things got really tough, she cried with me and then dragged my butt back to school because she knew how important it was for me to get a diploma, even if I lost sight of it. She was the angel in my life. She is now graduating as a massage therapist and is planning to eventually be a personal trainer. “I didn’t know what to expect when I came here. I thought it was going to be scarey, and it was, said alumna Krista Elliot. “I want to thank Marlene who answered the phone calls at 1 a.m. when I didn’t have anyone else to call. I am now an apprentice at an auto body shop. In September, I’m going to Grant MacEwan for correctional

studies to become a parole officer to help people the way that I have been helped. Edwards was like a mom to the students. “I feel like the most blessed woman in the city of Camrose (she asked all former and current students to stand). I count my blessing one by one (referring to the students), she said. “My last years of teaching were the most satisfying of my career. I ask you to count your blessings one by one. The program has helped about 80 students graduate with a high school diploma. “Learning Together is a message of hope. A hope for young women who probably had given up their dream to complete high school. Learning Together represents the opportunity to realize that dream, said vice-principal Karla Koleba. “We congratulate the school division. Not only to allow this kind of program, but also to include students over 20. I have not found another program in the province that allows students over 20.
