Gould named to Alberta 4-H Hall of Fame, joins his father Stan

Charlie Gould, of Rosalind, was inducted into the 4-H Alberta Hall of Fame in recognition of his service to 4-H and his community.

He was inducted prior to the beginning of the Northlands Farm and Ranch Show and the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Edmonton, Nov. 5 to 9.

Alberta’s 4-H program is the largest youth organization in the province, developing leadership and life skills in its members since 1917.

The Rosalind 4-H leader is following his dad’s foot

steps. As a child, Gould joined 4-H as a beef club member under the guidance of his father, Stan, who was inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame in 1977.

Charlie has been a leader in the Rosalind club for 35 years, running workshops on public speaking, animal health, and grooming on his farm, as well as representing the club on district and regional levels.

He is an active member of his community and has also served as a volunteer with the fire department, the agricultural society and a local church.

Gould is also a big supporter of the local 4-H annual show and sale, as well as the Canadian Bull Congress, of which 4-H clubs are a part.

“Like his father before him, Charlie Gould exemplifies the selflessness and dedication of 4-H volunteers, and stands as an example of how generations of Albertans have been a part of 4-H.

“It is an honour to welcome him into the 4-H Alberta Hall of Fame,” said Verlyn Olson, Agriculture and Rural Development minister.

The 4-H Alberta Hall of Fame has inducted 81 members since 1971.

Candidates are nominated by peers and leaders from local 4-H organizations and are evaluated based on their personal qualities, demonstrated leadership, community references and contributions to 4-H, agriculture and rural life.

The selection committee includes representatives of the 4-H Council of Alberta, the 4-H Foundation of Alberta and Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development.

Nov. 5 was “Show your 4-H Colours Day,” the official kick off of National 4-H Month.

Established in 1917, 4-H Alberta is the largest youth organization in the province with more than 250,000 alumni.

New rail spur lines will connect the plant to both the CN to the southwest and the CP to the north across Highway 13.

Cargill will have a rail yard capable of storing 500 to 600 rail cars, so a system will be built to move cars quickly.

Plan farming generation transitions From Agri-News

One of the presenters at this year’s Cow-Calfenomics sessions says transitioning the family farm from one generation to the next is never easy, and is something that takes time and preparation.

“Finances are important and the most important part of finances is probably living costs for both the retiring and the succeeding family,” said John Reid of Solar Harvest Consulting. “Retirees are living longer, and have things they want to do. This can mean pretty substantive living costs.”

Sometimes, the challenges facing the retiring family get lost in the transition period, says Reid. “Retirees are concerned about their legacy – the farm and how they want to see it continue. Many

want to travel, or stay active and not totally retired, but not tied down. This all has to be accounted for.”

As well, says Reid, transition will not work for the succeeding family if an adequate living is not possible.

“As such, it’s vital to know both the real cost of living on the farm/ranch, and the real ability to generate adequate revenue from all of the available sources.”

Reid emphasizes that having a will is not the same as having a transition plan.

“Wills are important, but are there for when someone passes away,” explains Reid.

“What we want to talk more about is what to do when people continue to live. To live well and happily you need more than a will for a plan.”

Most of what Reid has to say applies to everyone in general. But he does have one suggestion specific to cow-calf producers.

“There is a technique where a farm partnership can be rolled into a company.

The time to do that is when your inventory values are high. Cow-calf producers are now enjoying all-time record high prices for their inventory, and, as such, this is the ideal time to be taking that step.”

Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development’s Explore Local initiative is hosting a one-day Getting into CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) workshop on Nov. 18 at the Provincial Building in Lacombe.

“We’ll examine the basics of starting a CSA venture,” says Karen Goad, farm direct marketing specialist, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, Grande Prairie. “It’s a great opportunity for new farmers who want to start with a CSA enterprise as well as those looking to expand by

adding a CSA to an existing farm direct operation.

Participants can learn from the experience of others to gain the knowledge and skills needed to shorten their CSA learning curve and enhance their business success.”

Content for the day includes what to expect when starting a CSA, costs and the link to price and profitability and a look at the regulations that apply to your business as well as the On Farm Food Safety program. Two producer speakers, Karen Sollid of Sunhill Gardens, Camrose, and Nolan Fisher of Fish-

er Farms, near Didsbury, will round out the program with a look at how they got started in CSA and their tips for success. The workshop runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Alberta Surface Rights Federation has called a special meeting in Camrose on Nov. 24 to discuss the annual general meeting, oil company bankruptcy, reclamation and the farmers’ advocate.

All acreage, landowners and interested people are invited to join the meeting at the Norsemen Inn. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and the meeting follows at 10 a.m.

A committee will be formed to help prepare resolutions for the February AGM. Property Rights Advocate assistant Karen Johnson will be addressing the crowd on problems when oil companies declare bankruptcy and the surface rights board declines payment of annual compensation and other property rights issues.

After hearing resolutions from the floor in the afternoon, a speaker from the Alberta Energy Regulator will talk about rights and responsibilities of landowners regarding the reclamation and remediation process.

Carol Goodfellow, of agriculture and rural development, will offer updates on rural issues.

The day will end with discussions on general problems with leases, pipelines and powerlines.

The Alberta Conservation Association and the Camrose and District Fish and Game Association were released approximately 2,000 pheasants into a conservation area north of Daysland this fall.

“This is the first year the Alberta Conservation Association is administering the pheasant release program in the province,” said ACA biologist Mike Ukichura.

“Up until now it (administration) has always been done by the provincial government as a way to provide huntable bird populations.”

Pheasants were introduced into the province as non native birds in the early 1900s to the delight of wild game hunters who would go after them every fall.

“We had quite a few of them at one time, but with the reduction in the amount of habitat that is available to them the number has dropped quite significantly,” said Ukichura.

The Alberta Conservation Association is hoping that the pheasant release will result in more hunters purchasing licences.

“If we can get more people interested in hunting pheasant in the province we will be able to gain more leverage with the landowners when it comes to habitat conservation projects that we undertake,” explained Ukichura. “We will be able to show them that it is possible to do habitat conservation without negatively affecting their bottom line.”

Camrose and District Fish and Game Association director Tom Tomaszewski said hunting pheasants provides a good opportunity to go out with the dog and enjoy nature.

“I used to hunt pheasants quite a bit when I was younger and when there were more of them around,” he said. “I always enjoyed the way they fluttered their wings when they were taking off. They used to be pretty elusive and were hard to track, but that is not the case as much anymore.”

He said the pheasants that are being released in this area come from the United States so they should be pretty strong.”

Ukichura noted it is hard to say how many pheasants, once they are released, will actually survive.

“There is no doubt that predators will take some, just as they do with other small wildlife out on the landscape, but the more we can do to improve their habitat the more we can protect them. If you give them good habitat they will better be able to evade the predators that are out there and their chances of survival will increase significantly.”

Work gets underway on history book

Submissions are now being accepted for the second edition of the Rosalind and area history book As the Wheels Turn.

“We have received about 40 so far but we need a lot more,” said As the Wheels Turn editor and Rosalind history book committee member Marilyn Whiting.

“We would like to have them all in by Dec. 31, 2015.”

As The Wheels Turn will use family biographies, black and white photographs, land descriptions, birth and death records and clippings from newspapers to tell the story of the Rosalind area from pioneer days to the present.

“We are looking at 600 pages, with 100 of those devoted to the history of the area,” explained Whiting.

Rosalind and area has changed considerably since the first edition of As the Wheels Turn was published 34 years ago.

“It doesn’t look the same as it did,” explained history book committee member Chris Yuha. “The school is gone, as are the store, the churches and the elevators.

The committee just felt that it was time to do a new one.”

The committee isn’t placing a limit on the number of words for the family biographies and will be assisting families with the writing if requested.

“We’re looking for as much information as we can get, including dates and maiden names,” said Whiting. “I would say about 1,500 words for a family history would be about average.”

The Rosalind history book committee has been keeping a tight lid on expenses for the book, which will be printed by Friesen Press, in Edmonton, and officially released at the 100th anniversary celebration of Rosalind in early July of 2016.

“The Battle River Community Foundation and the Rosalind Elks have given us donations to assist with the cost of putting it together,” said Whiting, “and the village of Rosalind is providing the drop-in centre free of charge for our meetings.”

“Disease outbreaks not only risk the health and lives of individual horses, but also cost owners emotional and financial stress.
