The Camrose Spring Classic Rodeo gets bigger and better with each passing year!

Held at the Camrose Regional Exhibition April 25 to 27,

there will be three performances, but each will open with wild pony races for the children. The Wainwright Stampede Riders team will perform in the grand entry and the Graham Sisters Trick Riding Duo is set to perform after the intermission.

Every performance will have different competitors. With the level of entrants rising every year, the level of competition continues to grow, and ticket buyers will be treated to some outstanding rodeo! On Friday and Saturday the action begins at 7 p.m. with Sunday’s performance beginning at 2 p.m.

A dance on Saturday night will feature Trinity Bradshaw on stage.

The Ryley History Book Committee is working to publish a second edition of Beaver Tales – A History of Ryley and Area.

“We’re currently accepting stories of submissions from anyone who lives or has lived in the Ryley community,” said history book committee member Janet Winsnes. “As with all history books, the success of this project depends on the participation of current and former residents who share the stories.”

County checks farm trucks for safety

Camrose County’s Protective Services department and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement joined forces to offer farm truck safety inspections to help make local highways safe this spring.

The inspections were held on March 26 and 27 at the County office. Despite the snowy and icy conditions, 26 farm trucks were brought in for inspection at no charge to the drivers. “Of those 26, four trucks were found to have defects that would place them out of service,� explained County peace officer Dale Bjornson. “If stopped on a highway, those same trucks could easily have been towed and the drivers ticketed. Nine trucks required some minor attention and 13 trucks passed the inspection.�

The inspections covered critical safety items such as brakes, steering, lights, frames, exhaust, fuel systems, tires, wheels and other checks. “Camrose County encourages farmers to take advantage of this inspection program in order to avoid any on-highway problems in the future,� said officer Bjornson.

Camrose County assists historical cemetery site

County council agreed to have the summer parks crew assist with the maintenance of the New Salem Skafse Cemetery at its regular meeting on March 25.

Cemetery president Gordon Anderson wrote to council asking for help because the volunteers of the heritage site, located about two and a half miles south of Camrose on Township Road 462, were getting on in age and don’t have

large equipment to mow the unused portion of the cemetery.

“I met with the person who wrote the letter and the volunteers are ratepayers and those buried in the cemetery were ratepayers,” said Reeve Don Gregorwich. “It won’t cost us much for our crew to pass by and mow on their way to Tillicum Beach. It is spare change and it shows empathy for the situation.

across the county. It would be probably three times a year, not every week.”

The unused portion of the site is about 0.6 acres.

The group will still maintain the rest of the cemetery. Most of the group are family members related to those buried in the cemetery.

The 1905 cemetery was deserted for a while until about 1973 when volunteers came together to clean it up.

“This could snowball in a hurry,” said councillor Jack Lyle. “I can see us helping the New Norway cemetery because we kind of inherited that one, but this cemetery belongs to the United Church of Canada. One may not seem like much, but when you have 20 to mow it will be a lot.”

Councillor Doug Lyseng offered a different view.

“When you have an active congregation they

can maintain their own cemetery,” he said. “I think there is an issue because they are unable to keep it up. It is a small monetary request.”

A motion to deny the request was lost 4-3 and a new motion to mow the grass for the cemetery was passed 4-3.

Some councillors are concerned that other cemetery volunteers will be asking for assistance in the future.

County adds Williams, Cox to Wall of Fame

By Murray Green The Camrose County Agriculture Wall of Fame increased by two valuable members during the annual awards banquet at the New Norway Silver Creek Multiplex on Wednesday, April 2.

Century Farm awards, Wall of Fame inductees and scholarship recipients were acknowledged during the evening.

Ken Cox and Marion Williams were inducted into the Wall of Fame for their dedicated work and volunteering in several agricultural related activities, events and on committees. Agricultural minister Verlyn Olson and former premier Ed Stelmach praised the efforts of the two inductees for their service to the industry and to their fellow Albertans.

“We are celebrating relationships and community,” said MLA Olson. “There have been a couple of things that have impressed me as agriculture minister and one is the fast pace of change.

When you think of farms that have been in existence in excess of 100 years, how much change has happened over that period of time, and what people have had to do to survive, it is really impressive.”

Olson said agriculture is a global big business.

“It is science based and not a quaint undertaking that some people in urban centres might think it is. It has changed a lot over the years. If you are a 40-yearold farmer and the GPS on your combine isn’t working, who are you going to ask for help, your dad or your 14-year-old? I think that speaks to the environment we are living in. One thing we don’t want to change is the core values of what makes a rural Albertan. Think back to the pioneers that came here, how they got here, what they built and what we are trying to continue. That has taken determination, sheer

hard work, innovation and overcoming challenges.”

Minister Olson congratulated the farm families and the Wall of Fame inductees.

“Marion has left a lasting impression in rural Alberta and that is evident in the amount of people who came to support her tonight, even though she has been out of the business for awhile.

Ken is our neighbour just down the road from us. They (the Cox family) have been great neighbours, great community people whether it is 4-H, pancake suppers, or building ball diamonds, they are always there. There is something about both Ken and Marion that is special.

When you stop to think about it, there are certain people in our lives who, when you see them, you just feel good. When I see Vernie and Ken Cox and Marion Williams I just have a warm feeling and know these are good people who care about their neighbours and family and do great work for all of the people around them unselfishly.”

Ken Cox “It is indeed a pleasure for me to welcome you to induct Ken Cox into the Camrose County Wall of Fame. Ken and I go back a long ways. Ken represents total commitment and dedication in every part of his life and activities,” said Bob Prestage with his introduction.

Former premier Ed Stelmach thanked the Cox family for sharing Ken’s talents with the province.

“I thank him for his work in 4-H not only in showing cattle, but teaching responsibility to youth. His ability to teach youth, his community spirit and he always put other’s needs before himself is a value he shared. Thank you, especially from the children of this great province.”

Ken thanked everyone for their help and support over the years.

County Protective Services adds officer

Camrose County Protective Services have hired a new member to replace officer Dale Bjornson, who will be retiring this summer.

“We received many qualified applicants for the peace officer position, which was advertised to replace officer Bjornson. The successful applicant is Manie Germushuysen, who comes to us from the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement branch where he was a transport officer for the last five years,” said protective services manager Mike Kuzio, at council on March 25. “Manie brings a wealth of knowledge regarding commercial and farm vehicles and we feel he will be an excellent addition to Camrose County Protective Services.”

The new officer will be trained on county bylaws prior to officer Bjornson retiring.

The annual large truck check was hosted at the County on March 26 and 27.

A mock disaster exercise was held at the County office on April 1. It was a table top exercise instead of a functional exercise. It helped participants to be more engaged in the entire exercise, provided a greater understanding of the entire disaster services process, and allowed emergency management personnel to be better prepared if a real disaster was ever to occur in the Camrose County.

The County has shelved the idea of adding a regional peace officer because not al hamlets are on board with sharing the costs.

“They are on board with this proposal, but the funds are not there right now,” said manager Kuzio.

“Ferintosh feels this position would be a positive benefit, however the cost is too high at this point.

Edberg is the same. Bittern Lake is basically in the same position as Ferintosh and Edberg. Bashaw is satisfied with its law enforcement needs. Hay Lakes, Rosalind and Bawlf had no response.”

After leaving Rosalind School Ken moved on to a two-year course in the Vermilion School of Agriculture and finished in the top five per cent of his class. He then went to the American Herdsman’s Institute at Keesummit, Missouri, to refine his skills as a herdsman. Ken then moved to Armena to start a farm of his own.

Today his family operates an Angus cattle farm and also volunteers its knowledge and time to 4-H, Angus and community organizations.

“Marion is very organized and also very determined. Whatever was thrown at Marion, she found a way to work around it, with it or through it.

I see that as being very determined,” said David Samm, who helped nominate her to the wall. “The third word that came to mind was community. She was and is very committed to this community.

She grew up here. Family and friends are still very important to her.”

Marion was honoured with the presentation.

“I was so surprised that I was being inducted into the Camrose County Agriculture Wall of Fame.

I missed the last communications committee meetings and the next thing I knew, I was being nominated. So.

I guess I won’t be missing any more meetings,” said Marion with a laugh. “It is special to be honoured on the same evening as Ken Cox. Together Ken and I worked on many 4-H activities, planning workshops and judging competitions.”

Marion thanked Alberta Agriculture for letting her spend her entire career in the industry.

“I always enjoyed my rewarding and challenging career in extensions; helping people to help themselves.

My job changed based on the needs of the clients and the agriculture industry. The highlight for me was the people that I worked with. Both the staff and my clients.”

Marion Williams began her career as a district home economist for Alberta Agriculture in 1975. She worked in Olds and Vermilion before settling in Camrose.

Marion was the first resource for rural families on food safety, consumer education, nutrition and in providing learning opportunities to provide knowledge and tools to family farms. She played a key role in forming courses that were aimed at developing the skills farms and families needed to grow and adapt as the industry evolved from the management perspective.

County buys bulldozer

Camrose County agreed to purchase a 2014 John Deere 850K Dozer with a waste handling package and ripper from Brandt Tractor of Edmonton for $380,688 plus GST. Funding is to come from the West Dried Meat Lake Regional Landfill capital expense budget. Tenders to supply the dozer came from five suppliers and the prices were reviewed.

Brandt Tractor has a long-standing history of providing excellent service to Camrose County. They met all the requirements in the specification chart, placed the most competitive bid, and can deliver a machine sooner, reported administration.

Private property

A ratepayer wrote a letter concerning the amount of mud bogging and traffic on private property.

The county discussed the matter and administration advised councillors that it cannot add a bylaw because there is a provincial law that supersedes it.

Councillors advised to report incidents and to try and catch someone in the act of trespassing. A warning will be posted on the county website on the consequences of trespassing.

Province salutes its volunteers Doug Griffiths, MLA, Battle River-Wainwright

More than 140 communities across the province will host events and activities during National Volunteer Week to honour all the Albertans who enrich their communities by volunteering.

“National Volunteer Week is our opportunity to reflect on how we each have benefited from the selfless generosity of a local volunteer,” said Heather Klimchuk, Minister of Culture. “It’s also an excellent time to reach out and discover an organization or project that may need your talents and energy to succeed.”

The theme of National Volunteer Week 2014 is “Because volunteer work speaks volumes”; and Canadians are encouraged to join a national conversation on volunteer recognition. The Alberta Government is joining with Volunteer Alberta to do just that by providing $65,000 in funding for community recognition of volunteers. National Volunteer Week kicks off April 7 with the launch of a new initiative to recognize volunteers and the importance of volunteerism.

Approximately 70 percent of Albertans volunteered with organizations in their community in 2012-13 contributing more than 200 million hours to local initiatives.

The Government of Alberta works to support the efforts of volunteers and volunteer organizations through programs like the annual Vitalize Conference where participants take part in skills development workshops and the Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards recognizing Alberta’s exceptional volunteers. These are part of the Government’s broader efforts to support the nonprofit voluntary sector.

Lorne Taylor and Greg Taylor have been appointed chair and vice-chair of Alberta’s new arm’s-length environmental monitoring agency.

“With Lorne and Greg at the helm, I am confident that AEMERA will take Alberta’s environmental monitoring to even greater levels of reliability, credibility and transparency,” said Robin Campbell, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Resource Development. “This is fundamental to responsible resource development in our province.”

Area farmers face challenges as they prepare for the growing season As the April 30 crop insurance deadline approaches and Camrosearea farmers prepare to seed their crops, an Alberta crop market analyst says grain growers will be facing some challenges this year.

Prices on most commodities, including wheat, canola, and barley, have dropped roughly 40 per cent from the near-record prices Alberta farmers enjoyed last spring, says Charlie Pearson, a provincial crop market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD).

Meanwhile, input costs to grow a crop, such as fertilizer, seed, herbicides, and fungicides, haven’t dropped proportionately – creating a cost-price squeeze that is forcing farmers to really sharpen their pencils as they prepare for the growing season, said Pearson.

A review of crop costs between January 2013 and 2014 shows fertilizer prices fell 10 to 15 per cent, but have now climbed back to last year’s February levels due in part to seasonal demand, notes Jason Wood, a production crop economist with ARD. Diesel fuel has increased 13 per cent, but producers will be pleased to hear most seed costs and chemical prices have held steady, said Wood, noting treated canola seed varieties have increased two to 14 per cent.

“Margins will be a lot tighter than the last few years. Farmers will have to assess every input they use to ensure it gives them the best bang for their buck,” said Pearson. He points out today’s lower grain and oilseed prices are due to a general decline in world prices and huge, record grain yields harvested in Alberta and across Western Canada last fall.

Another issue facing farmers this year is the backlog of grain waiting to be shipped by rail for export to international markets.

“It’s creating cash flow challenges for farmers, and keeping grain and oilseed prices lower in Western Canada than other parts of the world where grain supplies are still relatively tight and demand is strong,” Pearson explains, adding he doesn’t expect commodity prices to move much in Alberta this year.

April 30 Crop Insurance Deadline

“Farmers are preparing to manage their way through the challenges this year, and as always good risk management will be important,” said Nancy Smith, with Agri-

culture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) – the provincial Crown corporation that administers crop insurance across Alberta on behalf of the provincial and federal governments.

She reminds farmers of the upcoming April 30 crop insurance deadline.

“Most producers will invest $200 to $300 or more per acre into their crops over the growing season, and they don’t want to risk losing that to a hailstorm or some other unexpected weather event,” said Smith. She explains that’s why more than 75 per cent of Alberta farmers insured about 15 million acres of annual crops across the province last year.

About $295 million was paid out on crop insurance claims for the 2013 crop year across Alberta, including Camrose County, said Smith.

The lion’s share of payouts last year – roughly $219 million – was triggered under the Hail Endorsement (HE) rider, an option 90 per cent of producers choose because hail is such a major weather risk in Alberta.

Despite more than 3,700 HE claims, actual losses under the production guarantee that crop insurance provides were only $36 million – among the lowest ever, said Smith. She explains crop insurance allows farmers to insure up to 80 per cent of their average production on most crops.

“If yields fall below that, a claim is triggered.

Even many farmers with hail damage harvested above average yields last fall because growing conditions were ideal across much of the province. Unfortunately the prices weren’t there for farmers in the fall,” said Smith.

The Spring Price Endorsement (SPE) rider on crop insurance triggered $38.8 million in claims when commodity prices on many crops fell up to 25 per cent last fall. The SPE compensates farmers when crop prices fall 10 per cent or more between spring and fall, explains Smith.

of a wreck, whether it’s market or weather-related,” he said, noting hail wiped out a good portion of his crops a few years ago triggering a claim that provided the financial protection he needed.

Straight Hail Coverage

Changes to crop insurance this year include increased Straight Hail coverage, which producers can Auto-Elect with their policy

by April 30.

“Previously we capped Straight Hail coverage at $150/acre for most crops.

We’ve now increased coverage to $225/acre for dryland cereals, and $325/acre for dryland canola and chickpeas. For irrigated crops, coverage has increased to $400/ acre for cereals, and $425/ acre for canola and chickpeas,” said Smith.
