Battle River Community Foundation past director Corey Kudrowich presents a cheque for $1,500 to Camrose Association for Community Living board member Dave Kotyk. By Dan Jensen

The Battle River Community Foundation has granted $1,500 to Camrose Association for Community Living’s Kandu Summer Camp program. The grant was made possible by the Arie and Leny Vanderjagt fund and the Foundation’s community fund. Kandu Summer Camp offers a wide variety of recreation, sport, and craft activities for all children, including children with special health and developmental concerns. The camp runs throughout July and August for children aged 7 to 17. “This is a very popular program that fills up quickly every year,” said CAFCL executive director Esther McDonald. “The summer camp has also developed partnerships with other summer camps – Boys and Girls Clubs of Camrose, Chuck MacLean Arts Centre and Camrose Leisure Services – to promote inclusion and friendship.” The 2013 Kandu Summer Camp had thirty-three campers who were able to foster relationships and build friendships. Five campers and their families were provided subsidies to help make the camp experience a reality. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects in East Central Alberta which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Foundation are made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds is kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Some grant funding is also made available by generous donors who make annual gifts to the Battle River Community Foundation. Since it was founded in 1995 the Battle River Community Foundation has granted more than $2,250,000 to support important local initiatives and organizations.

What happened to our Greyhound service? Only a few years back Camrose had it, even if it was a mere few days a week. We were told it wasn’t paying for itself at the time but that was back in 2011! It is now 2014; our population has grown. There are many tar sand workers from other provinces who work 21/7 and would love

to spend their week off travelling to Camrose to see if indeed it is a great place to raise a family, buy a home and live happily ever after. Never mind our Augustana students, whose dollars are spent on schooling and not a vehicle, and the members of our elderly population who care not to drive in the city. So please Camrose, can we give it one more try? Can we please bring back our bus? Lindell Kennedy, Camrose

Alberta close to failing Red Tape test according to CFIB By Murray Green

If Alberta was a student, she would be on the verge of receiving a failing grade. The province is sliding in the annual Red Tape Report Card conducted by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) in its fourth annual review. The report card is primarily assessing progress on regulatory accountability. The main criteria for success are measurement of, and publicly reporting on, the regulatory burden. Last year in 2013, Alberta was awarded a D+ in serving ratepayers. Due to the province’s lack of interest, the grade has slipped to a straight D and shows no signs of improving the mark in the future. “This is a report card on the basics. It’s not that hard to do well,” said Laura Jones, CFIB’s executive vice-president. “Red tape reform has a simple formula: Measure, report, repeat. You can’t get where you’re going if you don’t know where you are.” Many of the grades represent a significant step for-

ward from five years ago, but not Alberta. “Sadly, Alberta continues to receive a low grade. Premier Alison Redford has not invested the time, focus, or political capital to make cutting red tape a priority for her government. There’s some talk, and a few platitudes, but at the end of the day, not much actual red tape has been cut,” said Alberta director, Richard Truscott. “To make real progress on red tape requires real leadership right at the top. We’re still waiting for the Premier to step up.” Canadians are encouraged to show their support for CFIB’s Red Tape Revolution by signing the on-line petition (www.cfib.ca/rtaw) that will be delivered to governments. CFIB is Canada’s largest association of small and medium-sized businesses with 109,000 members across every sector and region. The government has broken yet another promise to eliminate red tape and help grow small business in Alberta.

Alberta Wildrose opposition critic Gary Bikman pointed out that Premier Redford struck a red-tape reduction panel over two years ago, but there has been little action on actually achieving results for small business. “It is disappointing to see that Alberta is doing worse than last year in the CFIBs annual Red Tape Report Card,” Bikman said. “Helping small businesses succeed should be a priority, but the out-of-touch PCs are proving once again they are all talk and no action.” Bikman said that in a competitive national economy it is disappointing that Alberta ranks so far behind other provinces and jurisdictions in red tape reduction. “I never thought I would live to see the day where Alberta would be behind BC, Saskatchewan and six other provinces in supporting our small businesses,” Bikman said. “We must start to eliminate red tape and redundancy before more businesses leave for other jurisdictions that are already doing so.”

Speech from Throne outlines Conservative commitments Kevin Sorenson, MP Crowfoot

The House of Commons has reconvened in Ottawa and our Conservative government’s top priorities will continue to be those that matter most to Canadians: jobs; growth and long-term prosperity. We intend to build on our strong economic record of creating jobs, keeping taxes low, supporting and protecting families, and putting Canada first. The recent Speech from the Throne outlined our commitments and we will be introducing new legislation that will: open new markets for Canadian goods and services; create a Victims’ Bill of Rights; further protect our children and communities; and much more. We have been running a productive, hard-working and orderly

Parliament that has allowed us to continue to deliver results for all Canadians, including our best legislative performance with 40 bills receiving Royal Assent in 2013. Finance Minister Jim Flaherty has announced that Economic Action Plan 2014, our Government’s plan for jobs and opportunities, will be tabled February 11, 2014. This includes a great deal of work that I have been doing as Minister of State (Finance). Since, early November last year, Minister Flaherty and I have held several national and local pre-budget roundtable consultations. Additionally, thousands of Canadians answered the invitation to participate in the online pre-budget consultations. As always, I was pleased to see

input from constituents in our Crowfoot riding. Canadians shared their experiences and provided recommendations concerning the cost of living and raising a family. Many said they want to ensure Canadians are obtaining the skills and knowledge necessary for the jobs of tomorrow. Canadian businesses provided their input on how our government can further help businesses grow and hire new employees. All of these ideas have been helpful and constructive in supporting a stable environment in which investment and trade flourish. Minister Flaherty and I met recently with Canada’s leading private sector economists. They agreed that the average forecast from private sector economists is a rea-

sonable basis for fiscal planning for Economic Action Plan 2014. We have the federal government on track to balance the federal budget in 2015, while continuing with our low-tax plan to create jobs, growth and long-term prosperity. We continue to find additional savings and reductions in the expenditure of taxpayers’ dollars. Our Conservative government’s responsible and disciplined use of taxpayers’ dollars is expected to yield a surplus of just under $4 billion in 2015–16. I am very pleased that the average Canadian family of four now pays nearly $3,400 less in taxes than in 2006. Ongoing global uncertainty and recent examples of the consequences of significant deficits in other

countries make it even more important for Canada to remain focused on balanced budgets. Therefore, our government will not entertain the traditional laundry list of new spending touted by the New Democratic Party and Liberal Party. Their lists have been sent with no regard to their actual costs to taxpayers or their impact on the long-term state of Canada’s finances. Our government will remain focused on supporting job creation and helping grow the economy by keeping taxes low. Council passes 1.94 per cent tax increase By Dan Jensen

Camrose City council has passed a 2014 property tax rate increase of 1.94 per cent based on total operating expenditures of $46,549,018, general operating expenditures of $34,850,792, utility operating expenditures of $11,698,226 and transfer to capital of 1,507,300. “I am very satisfied with what we (council) have been able to accomplish,” said Mayor Norm Mayer. “The increase is not much more than the rate of inflation. I think we are being to fair to everybody and we are keeping the services inline while still providing the services we have in the past.” The preliminary operating budget presented to council called for a 3.65 per cent property tax increase. At its Jan. 20 meeting, council approved funding to community organizations totalling an increase of $27,403, as well as a motion to bring the tax levy increase to two per cent or lower. On Jan. 27, administration brought back budget revisions that brought the proposed tax increase to 1.62 per cent. Additional changes made by council raised the increase to 1.94 per cent. Budget revenues

The City of Camrose will receive 63 per cent of its operating revenues ($21,836,166) from taxation, followed by fifteen per cent from sales and rentals, ten per cent from reserves and other funds, five per cent from licences, permits and fines, four per cent from government grants and transfers, two per cent from other taxation and one per cent

from return on investments. Twenty-eight per cent of revenues will come from general government, 24 per cent from community services, 19 per cent from public works and transportation, 16 per cent from the police service, five per cent from administration, five per cent from engineering, two per cent from the fire service, and one per cent from economic development. Budget expenses

Salaries and benefits account for 48 per cent of operating expenses, followed by contracted services at 12 per cent, transfers at eight per cent, equipment charges at seven per cent, utilities at five per cent, principal on long term debt at five per cent, materials and miscellaneous at five per cent, transfer to capital at four per cent, interest and bank charges at three per cent, and equipment purchases at three per cent. Twenty two per cent of the expenditures will go through community services, 18 per cent through the police service, 17 per cent through public works and transportation, 17 per cent through general government, 11 per cent through administration, five per cent through engineering, five per cent through capital funding, four per cent through the fire service, and one per cent through economic development. Debt limit

The City of Camrose is budgeting $3,309,000 for debt servicing in 2014, a number that is expected to drop to $2,910,000 in 2015 and $2,593,000 in 2016. The City’s current debt is $22,573,000 – well below the debt limit of $69,000,000. The total debt per capita is $1,277.00.

City won’t be guaranteeing Bailey Theatre loan By Dan Jensen

City council voted 5-4 in favour of a motion presented at its Feb. 3 meeting that the City of Camrose is not prepared to own the Bailey Theatre or guarantee/pay out its mortgage. “I don’t believe at this point that a $500,000 commitment on the capital side plus a business model on the operating side that does not seem to work is what I want to expose the taxpayers to at this point,” said councillor Greg Wood. “I think we need a better answer than just having the City bail out the Bailey. If that happens the taxpayers are going to be on the hook for a never-ending cheque writing spree.” Wood expressed the belief as a taxpayer and a citizen that the arts and the business community need to support the Bailey, just as is the case now with the performing arts centre, which received a major commitment of $12 million two

years ago from the City of Camrose. “I believe at this point it is not the taxpayers at large that need to support this facility. I would much rather see the City not dump any dollars into it now,” said Wood. “If the business community and the arts community can step up and deal with the capital side then it is a different conversation, but right now it (loan guarantee) is too big a bill for me to swallow for the City taxpayers.” Wood said he is in full support of a plan that would see the Bailey and the performing arts centre work together to create efficiencies on the operating side. Councillor Wayne Throndson explained that if the City guarantees the Bailey loan and the loan then goes into default, the City taxpayer is on the hook for $500,000. “The risk to the City of Camrose and to the taxpayers it that we have to pay $500,000,” said Throndson.

“Yes we end up with a building (if the loan defaults) and there is certainly some value to the building, but there is a very real risk to the tax base, and I for one have heard loud and clear from many of them (taxpayers) that they don’t want to expose the tax base to that risk.” Councillor Bill Sears said he doesn’t see a problem with the City guaranteeing the loan. “I talked about win-win and I don’t know where the loss is there. If the City guarantees the loan the mortgage is less than the building. I don’t know how we can lose. The win-win is that it immediately frees up I think $150,000 for the Bailey to operate and we backstop a building, a property that is worth more than the loan.” Sears said he prefers to be positive, rather than negative about the Bailey Theatre, and look at what is best for the City of Camrose in the long run. “Thanks to the Bai-

ley Theatre Society and the generous support of many, including the City of Camrose, we now have a completely renovated historical building that was before and is again an important part of our historic downtown. We have a landmark that anchors the north end of main street and on performance days brings people downtown. We have a stateof-the-art theatre that gets rave reviews from performers and audiences alike. In partnership with the U of A Augustana we will soon have another world class facility – the new Camrose Performing Arts Centre. These two facilities give Camrose the unique opportunity to become a major arts centre in western Canada. Just as we are known for using our excellent recreation facilities to host major sporting events, we can use the Bailey and CPAC to host major arts events – events that will bring people and business to Camrose. “I think it (Bailey) is

important to main street and I think we have to figure out a way to make it happen.” Councillor Agnes Hoveland said she had hoped that, instead of dealing with the motion on the table, council would have been able to come up with a compromise and some strategies to be able to support the Bailey in a restart and assist in whatever way necessary to buy more time for a restructuring and a new plan. “I envision Camrose as being truly a mecca in the arts. In the past we have had a wonderful record and I would like to see us build on our legacy around the arts, and that includes the Bailey. I really don’t want to see the Bailey close. This has been a very difficult decision for me personally as well as for all of us. We have spent many hours deliberating this, but I will have to vote in opposition to this motion.” Continued on page 14

University of Alberta, Augustana Campus crosscountry skiing coach, wax technician and promoter Les Parsons is going to the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia and he is taking his sandals with him. Les not only volunteered to help the Great Britain team with waxing techniques, he also agreed to help out the Canadian squad. “I helped coach some of these athletes a few years ago (Canadian Alex Harvey has a shot at a medal) and I wanted to go cheer them on,” said Les, who has gone to six Olympics. “I will be cheering for both teams. In fact, I will be cheering for most of the least known athletes in all the sports at the Games.” Les will be taking a pair of sandals to send a simple message to the world. “I purchased the Sahakarini sandals first worn by Gordon Schieck at last year’s auction. I will be taking them with me during my travels and sharing the story behind them with athletes and people from around the world.” Gordon purchased the then sturdy sandals in India in the 1950s when he and his wife Mina were missionaries in the country. Sahakarini has supported many projects around the world to help developing countries and the sandals have travelled with supporters to countries such as Africa, India, South America and the Caribbean. Since the first Loaves and Fishes Dinner in 2001, the sandals have been auctioned to raise funds and people have travelled the world with them. First owner, other than Gord, Alan

Fielding walked a mile in his sandals in Brazil. This year, Les wants to add to the list of places and people who have come in contact with the storied sandals. “I’m going to get some of the athletes to listen to my story and get a picture of them with the sandals,” said Les, who will be gone for a month. “Wouldn’t it be great if I could get Sydney Crosby to wear them? This is my opportunity to connect the sandals with people from several countries. Sahakarini is about helping others and connecting them with our group from Camrose.” Les also plans to take the sandals with him to Newfoundland for the skiing nationals. “I’m not a big fan of the Olympics because of the dream teams and major sponsorships, but I like and support the athletes,” added Les. “The focus of Sahakarini is to help the poorest of the poor, which is a contrast to the Games. There won’t be a lot of people from Africa or parts of Asia, and India is one of the largest countries in the world and they won’t have very many, if any at all, at the Games.” Les said it is hard to justify the Olympic Games spending $50 billion, when we still have poverty. “Some people don’t have food, shelter or clothing. My heart is with them.” Les shared the story of Jesus wearing sandals and that John the Baptist indicated he wasn’t even worthy of tying his (Jesus’) sandals. “Sandals are the most common footwear in the world. It is symbolic of the poor and it reminds us that we can help people from different countries. That could have been me. I could have

been born in a poor country.” Les plans on putting them on the outside of his backpack so they can be seen wherever he goes. “I’ll challenge people who ask about them to do something in there own community, such as start a Sahakarini organization,” he said. Many athletes put their life on hold for several years to pursue the Olympic dream. “Some work very hard and I’ll be cheering for those athletes. In some poor countries it is amazing

the athletes even get to the Olympics,” said Les on the sacrifices that are made. “Those are the athletes that I’ll be cheering for the loudest.” The Sahakarini promoter is also being asked to pass the sandals on to the next generation. “We want to reach and connect with a new generation of people to make them aware of the fact that we still need to help others from poor nations,” said Les. “I’ll broadcast on behalf of the poor and the spread the word they still need help.”

MonkeyJunk won the Juno award two years ago in the same category for the To Behold recording, which is also on the Edmonton-based roots music label Stony Plain. Just two weeks ago in Toronto MonkeyJunk took home five prestigious Maple Blues Awards, confirming that along with artists like Matt Anderson, Canadian blues is in fine hands with our gifted young players and singers.

Last summer at the Edmonton Blues Festival at the Hawrelak Park Amphitheatre, MonkeyJunk shattered disc sales for the festival by selling almost 500 copies of the latest album in the 40 minutes following their rollicking set at the sold-out event. “Alberta music fans have really taken to us over the past four years,” said MonkeyJunk’s lead vocalist and harmonica ace Steve Mar-

riner who has also recorded one solo album and toured extensively with Harry Manx. “It doesn’t seem to matter if we are playing a great club like the Ironwood in Calgary, playing a soft seat theatre like Festival Place in Sherwood Park or working with great musicians at a blues workshop at the Edmonton Folk Fest, the response is always over the top,” added Marriner.

The Bailey Theatre date is part of an Alberta MonkeyJunk tour that includes stops in Lethbridge, Grande Prairie, Sherwood Park and Calgary. Tickets for the Camrose performance, one that is guaranteed to warm up a cold prairie winter night, are available at the Bailey box-office. The show will be presented in a cabaret licensed setting.

Councillor Max Lindstrand reiterated his former stance on the need to get all the parties together to formulate a Camrose arts authority that looks at the potential within the community. “As we look from the Bailey and go down through the park and towards CPAC I could see Shakespeare in the park and performances going on at the Bailey and CPAC throughout the summer,” said Lindstrand. “There are all kinds of opportunities here if we have the courage to investigate what the opportunities are and take a look at creating a vision for the arts. The potential here is great. Look at places like Stratford that started with one theatre and now the budget for the Stratford festival is as many times as big as the budget for the entire city of Stratford. I think we need to do everything we can to extend the window of opportunity here with respect to arts in the community.” Councillor Ray McIsaac expressed the need to leave no stone unturned before making a decision. “I would like us to do our due diligence, do some soul searching and get the parties together.”

Disappointment at the tone of Bailey discussions By Dan Jensen

Augustana president Dr. Allen Berger expressed his disappointment over what seems to him to be an increasingly adversarial and inflammatory tone to the discussions around the Bailey Theatre during a presentation to Camrose City council Feb. 3. “I am personally a firm believer that Camrose as a community and the performing arts centre as a project would both be significantly harmed if the Bailey were to go dark,” said Dr. Berger. “I also firmly believe that the Bailey and the performing arts centre each have the potential to make the other stronger. Analogies that are readily available to us include Superstore and Walmart. Both, I am certain, are quite pleased that the other is across Highway 13 because their concentration together brings a much larger contingent of shoppers to our town. Similarly, Sole City Shoes has to be very happy that Lou’s has been across the street for many decades, bringing shoppers down from Edmonton.” Dr. Berger believes if Camrose desires to become home to the kind of arts events and festivals that will draw people from out of town, eat in our restaurants, shop on Main Street and sleep in our hotels, it needs

complementary performance venues. “I am drawn to examples like the multiple venues that support the jazz festival in Medicine Hat,” he said, “and more particularly, I am drawn to the examples that are provided by other university towns where sister institutions of Augustana, other members of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges are found. For example, in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, Shepherd university each year sponsors a three and a half week contemporary American theatre festival. They are able to do this only because of the existence of multiple and complementary venues. That three and a half week season every summer brings new American plays that are performed and work shopped in the small town of Shepherdstown before they go to major cities like Washington, Philadelphia and New York, and people from a large radius all around Shepherdstown patronize the festival.” A similar situation exists for Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon, said Dr. Berger, where each summer, because of the availability of multiple venues, Ashland is able to draw thousands of people into town for a Shakespeare festival. Dr. Berger believes the performing arts centre and

the Bailey Theatre, due to their different sizes, their different stage and their different chamber configurations, are a perfect and complementary match. He believes, too, that the arts are an ideal vehicle for advancing economic development and for building healthy communities. This is why, he said, economists have focused on the power of something they now call the creative economy. Dr. Berger saluted “the forward and risk taking members of the community” who committed to a vision to renovate the Bailey. “When my wife and I first toured Camrose back in November, 2010, when I was being interviewed for my present position, the first thing we were introduced to in this town was the beauty of our Main Street and, in addition, the Bailey Theatre, which was under renovation,” he said. “It was our excitement about the potential for Camrose that led to our decision to come here.” Dr. Berger saluted as well the forward looking and risk taking members of City council, who have committed to a collaboration with Augustana to build the performing arts centre. “I am very proud of having arrived just in time to help bring those negotiations to a successful conclusion,” he said.

Dr. Berger is convinced that Camrose is not like any other rural community in Alberta. “We are the only rural community in Alberta with a world class university in its midst,” he said. “We are one of few rural communities in Alberta that have a thriving and a charming – not a dying – downtown, but we should never take that for granted because it is fragile and can easily disappear. We are unlike most other rural communities because our population is growing. We are unlike other rural communities because we have extraordinary athletics and outdoor recreation facilities, in many cases due to the foresight of our City council. Dr. Berger concluded by expressing the hope that the City, Augustana and those in the arts community can begin to build alliances and find common purpose, first around the vision of the role the arts can play in advancing the Camrose community, and second around an inclusive strategy that sees the performing arts centre and the Bailey as playing complementary and mutually essential roles. “As dean of Augustana but more importantly as a citizen of Camrose,” he said, “I welcome opportunities to be personally involved.”

Nordlys Film Festival – from basement to Bailey By Laurel Nadon The Camrose Booster

From the humble beginnings of a family watching alternative videos in their basement, the Nordlys Film and Arts Festival has now grown into a popular community-wide film event held at the Bailey Theatre. When the Pretty Hill Film Festival began in 2000 as a fun Family Day weekend activity, organizer Mardell Olson had no idea how the event would transform, with 167 audience members now attending a single screening. “We never could have predicted that our little festival would become the amazing community event that it is today. It has been a thrill for us to watch it evolve,” Olson said. “Many of the Nordlys board members caught the bug at the Pretty Hill Film Festival and they have done a superb job of keeping the spirit of the original festival alive.” The Olson family began by inviting extended family, then their children invited friends and neighbours, and attendance kept growing through word of mouth. At the 10th event in 2009 (one year there were two festivals), the family had 170 signatures in its guestbook from the weekend and began to think of a larger venue. “By the last few years, we had the overflow crowd in our unheated triple car

A crowd gathers in the basement of Mardell and Verlyn Olson’s home for the 2008 opening ceremonies of the Pretty Hill Film Festival. The event has since evolved to become the Nordlys Film and Arts Festival, which will be held at the Bailey Theatre Feb. 14 to 16.

garage,” Olson said, adding that they rented heaters which weren’t quite adequate, and there were line-ups at bathrooms and parking difficulties. In 2010, the name of the event was changed to the Nordlys, which is Norwegian for Northern Lights, and it was held at the University of Alberta Augustana campus for two years. This will be the third year that the event will take place at the Bailey Theatre. When the festival first began, a few traditions were set in place that still remain, such as a black and white gala opening event, music performed between films including special Saturday night entertainment and dis-

cussions about the films. The tradition of rating each film after the viewing has also been kept, with audience members giving the film a rating up to 10. “It’s more of a discussion starter if the person beside you gives it a nine and you gave it a six,” Olson said. Audience members can also become a Nordlys critic by watching at least eight of the nine films over the weekend. At the end of the festival, the critics pick their favourite film, which receives the Pretty Hill Award. The festival also promotes a cause each year, with last year’s community partner being Sahakarini and this year’s the Camrose and District Hospice Society.

It was important to keep the atmosphere the same as the event grew, said Michelle Reshaur, president of the Nordlys Film and Arts Society. “What makes Nordlys unique is we really like creating this atmosphere where people can stay and listen to music between films and talk to their neighbours,” Reshaur said. “We really wanted it to feel like you might be coming over to a friend’s house. Hopefully we haven’t lost too much of the charm of the Olson’s basement.” New this year is poet in residence Randy Kohan, who is one of the founders of the Pretty Hill Film Festival. Kohan is the author of Hammers & Bells, which was published in late 2013.

Olson co-organized the musical entertainment for this year’s event, including the Camrose Composite High School’s jazz band, the Wetaskiwin Strings and The Once from Newfoundland. “They have such rich vocal harmonies,” Olson said of headlining group The Once. “They’re very good storytellers, they sing ballads that tell stories.” The Once has embraced a different, more thoughtful vision of Newfoundland music, with the trio depending on the power of their voices and acoustic instruments. The Nordlys Film and Arts Society chooses the films by screening the movies ahead of time, often featuring films that have premiered elsewhere. The opening evening this year falls on Valentine’s Day so two of the movies, Gangster of Love, about a Croatian matchmaker, and Blancanieves, a black and white Spanish version of Snow White, were chosen. The filmmakers for The Auctioneer and Gently Whispering the Circle Back will be in attendance and have a question and answer period after their films. Dale Menzak, the auctioneer that the film follows, will be on hand to auction off items to benefit the hospice society. Tickets are available at the Bailey box office, by phone at 672-5510 or online at nordlysfestival.com

Gently Whispering the Circle Back captures essence of Healing Circles By Laurel Nadon The Camrose Booster

The documentary Gently Whispering the Circle Back, which studies healing circles and the impact of the Indian Residential School system, will screen at the Nordlys Film and Arts Festival at the Bailey Theatre on Feb. 16. Inset photo, Wishart MacKenzie.

A documentary at this year’s Nordlys Film and Arts Festival explores the importance of healing circles in bringing back dignity to First Nations people traumatized by the residential school system. Gently Whispering the Circle Back is also a powerful story for non-indigenous people as well, says filmmaker Beth Wishart MacKenzie, who will be in attendance at this year’s festival running Feb. 14 to 16. “The film explores different pathways for healing. Very powerful stories were shared with us,” said Wishart MacKenzie of the 49-minute documentary. “It looks very squarely in the face of the trauma but also shows the healing process at

work. I’m hoping it will shift people’s attitudes about our indigenous people and help them recognize their strength and generosity.” The Blue Quill First Nations College, located near St. Paul, commissioned the film and hosted symposiums in which participants broke into traditional talking circles, asking filmmakers to study the circle process, how healing happens as well as the impact on the next generation. The federal government partly funded the making of the film. Filming took place at the college as well as around Edmonton in January and March 2012, with the film completed at the end of 2012. Participants in the film speak of their recovery of tradition, language, ceremony and personal dignity.

“Our system caused a deep wounding. We as a nation need to examine our systems so they don’t do that,” said Wishart MacKenzie. “We robbed our indigenous people of their dignity and selfworth and somehow made them feel that their way of being was uncivilized. We need to look inward at ourselves and work at mending the bridges with our indigenous brothers and sisters.” She added that it was a surprise to find that as a well-educated Canadian woman, she didn’t know the story of residential schools. As a member of the United Church, she was also deeply shaken to learn of that church’s role in the schools. Continued on page 22

Funeral director passionate about helping people By Murray Green

Cam Parker is a funeral director and part owner of Burgar Funeral Home in Camrose. His story was one of many in the Human Library series at the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus. University staff member Kara Blizzard was eager to hear stories from Cam, who has been in Camrose for 19 years. “I started as a funeral director in Prince George when I was 18 years old,” said Cam. “I grew up in Swift Current and in Grade 10 my family moved to Pakistan for two years. I grew up pretty fast there. It shaped me for when I came back to Canada. I moved back to Swift Current and then to Jasper.” Cam met his future wife in Jasper and had to decide on a career path before getting married. “Her home town was Prince George, so I sent out resumes there and I went for an interview at a funeral home and I was hired on the spot,” said Cam. “I’ll never

forget my first day. They took me on a tour of the funeral home. I think it was a test more than anything. They wanted to see what my reaction would be and I handled it quite fine.”

Cam apprenticed and received his licence over the next two years. He has been a funeral director for 25 years. “Prince George was a very rough and tough city,”

he said. “I didn’t want my daughters growing up there.” He transferred to the Okanagan (Vernon) then moved to Camrose. Cam said moving to Camrose was the right deci-

sion. “In a small community, and knowing most of the families, it brings more emotional involvement,” he said. “I’m on call pretty much 24/7 and when I receive a call I have to go. I’m lucky because my wife is understanding.” Cam has to secure vital statistics for the deceased and meet with the family to make arrangements. “We are more than funeral directors, we are often counsellors helping people,” he said. “We do everything possible for the family.” In smaller centres a funeral director has to be versatile enough to perform duties that range from embalments and making arrangements to washing cars. “There is a variety, every day is different. Every day is something is new. You have to schedule things when the families are available,” he said. “There is a lot about my job that I enjoy. It’s both challenging and rewarding. I can’t see myself doing anything else.”

Twin cities of Camrose and Kamifurano similar yet different By Brenda Knull

There have been many days here in Kamifurano that I almost forget I am in a foreign country thousands of kilometers away from Camrose. This is possibly because the scenery is so similar between the two communities, or maybe it’s due to the comparable climate and many centimeters of snow that has covered the town. It could even be because I consider Kamifurano my home now. I have a fairly consistent routine, which consists of going to work, enjoying my leisure time and running errands somewhere between the two. But just when I experience this familiar type of feeling, something out of somewhere reminds me of the differences that exist between the two cultures. The first time I had to pay a utility bill I was taken by surprise. I had no idea how I should go about doing that. Now, the only way that I really knew that I had a bill to pay was that I can read the Japanese currency called yen (¥) (it’s better pronounced by ignoring the `y` sound). One of my co-workers confirmed my suspicion that I owed someone money. It was then time to find out

To Mama Love & Kisses K-Man & Sashy

what the banking hours are in town and walk down there to pay my dues. But no, here it’s much easier than that. You can pay your bills at any convenience store. So you can go to your local 7-11 to buy an ice cream, use the ATM, and pay your bills too. Typically, the cashier will ask me if I would like to buy my items and pay the bills in one transaction. After saying yes I have to push a button on a monitor to acknowledge that I authorize the payment. At least that’s why I think I push the button. Do you know how many snow spheres it takes to make a snowman here? If you said three, then you are close. Snowmen are usually built with two sphere’s in East Asia. The first time I saw one of these two-sphered snowmen, I was curious. What happened to this poor snowman? It turns out that they are called yuki daruma (yuki means snow) after the round shape of the Daruma doll. This doll is hollow and round and it is modelled after the founder of the Zen sect of Buddhism. In keeping with the spirit of snow and all things cold, I will tell you about typical buildings found in Hokkaido. Remember the average

winter temperature here is much milder than that in Camrose but just the other day it dipped down to -25°C. Most houses have no insulation or centralized heating. I repeat: no centralized heating. This of course makes for a very cold home for a few months of the year. I often find it warmer to be outside than inside a building such as my house, a school, or the office where I spend part of my day. It is common to see people inside the office wearing a few extra layers of clothing, a light jacket, and sitting with a blanket on their lap. In some schools that I go to, the classrooms are much warmer than the hallways. In my home I call the toilet room and my kitchen “the Arctic”. A good thing about the toilet room is that most seats have a heat function so, for your behind, it may feel like the Arctic on a sunny day. One of my favourite hobbies is to lay on the floor beside my heater while wrapping myself up like a mummy with blankets. I have a heard a few different reasons for why the heating situation is the way it is. I have heard that people here heat their homes using space heating rather than centralized heat-

ing. This essentially means that you only heat the room of the house that you use the most. For me that is my central room where I have my kitchen table. My living room is out of commission until the spring thaw. I have also heard that people believe in heating people not buildings so they wear extra layers, use things such as heat packs, and eat hot food such as curry, nabe, and ramen noodles. Many typical homes are very small compared to typical Camrose homes. This means that is it possible to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature with a small and/or portable unit. I feel happy when I can no longer see my breath when I am at home. Fuel/energy costs are very expensive and so it makes sense to only heat the area of your home that you are using at a given time. Central heating is bulky and given the small square area of the average home, it not the best use of space. I get the opportunity to be a cultural observer as I live my life in Kamifurano. I am not here to be the judge of the different ways of life that occur in our sister cities. There are times when I really don’t understand why things are done the way they

are, but I do know that they make life more interesting to live. That spirit of being a young child and continuously asking `why` is back in my life and that is something truly special. Camrose and Kamifurano have been sister cities since about Sept. 5, 1985. The Camrose/Japan Friendship Society was formed in 1999 and since that time, Camrose has been actively involved with Kamifurano, Japan. The two communities are similar in many ways but there are also some clear differences. If you have a question about Kamifurano, please write it down in a letter or on a postcard (one with a Canadian picture on it would be great). Then send your question to me since I am currently living and teaching in Kamifurano. You might be asking yourself what do people like to eat? What is the weather like? Do people celebrate the same holidays as we do in Camrose? Be sure to include your mailing address, so that I can reply to you. Brenda Knull, Kamifurano Board of Education, 1-9-4, Midorimachi, Kamifurano, Sorachi-gun, Hokkaido, 071-0563.

REMINDER:

Effective savings strategy means paying yourself first By Dan Jensen

“Pay yourself first! “We’ve all heard that piece of advice, but hearing it and actually putting it into practice are two different things. Without a plan which automatically deducts a certain amount from your bank account, saving money can be very difficult. Inevitably, something comes up which will use the funds you have set aside. Many savings accounts are diminished due to what people refer to as “emergency expenditures. The problem, according to Chuck Chakrapani, author of Financial Freedom on $5 a Day, is that people plan backwards. Instead of paying themselves first, he said they pay others first. “To paraphrase Parkinson’s Law, explained Chakrapani, “expenditures rise to meet income. This means that as your income increases, so does your expenditure. That is what is wrong with believing at some future time you will be able to save, but not now. True, saving takes discipline, but after doing it for a while, it becomes natural. One way to save, Chakrapani suggests, is to deduct a portion of your salary (say 10 per cent) before spending. Start with a lower amount, and if it feels comfortable, increase the amount later. Another method is to commit yourself to putting away a set sum every day, and at the end of every month, transferring that amount to a savings account or other investment vehicle. Look at your lifestyle and determine whether or not you spend $5 a day on items

that are not really needed. You may decide to bag your lunch, instead of always going out. Over a period of 35 years, $5 a day invested at six per cent, compounded annually, would grow to $216,675. A favorite saving method for Chakrapani is to put aside 10 per cent of the money spent on each and every item. The government already takes five per cent in the way of Goods and Services Tax, so is it that much more difficult to add another five per cent? If you spend $100 on a bill, make sure $5 is set aside for your savings. If you spend $600 a month on mortgage payments, add another $30. Investing Money

There are many investment vehicles that are available, but few are as popular as the Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP). The Government of Canada established RRSPs in 1957 to encourage Canadians to save for retirement on a tax sheltered basis. Every dollar that you put into your RRSP, up to a certain limit, can be deducted from your taxable income. You eventually pay tax on funds withdrawn from an RRSP, but that is presumably after you have retired, and your tax rate is not as high. Investing in mutual funds is another way to make money grow. A mutual fund takes the savings of many investors and invests that money in a portfolio of securities. Since the funds are spread among several securities, the risk is minimized, as opposed to going the way of the stock market. Mutual funds are offered by banks

5022-49 Street, Camrose Phone 780-672-0155 and trust companies, mutual fund dealers, financial planning organizations, stock brokers, some credit unions and insurance companies. Bonds are another type of interest-earning security. When you buy a bond, you lend money to a business or government body. The institution pays you a fixed rate of interest for its use and your original investment is repaid at maturity. If you want a good yield with virtually no risk, you may want to investigate a guaranteed investment certificate or term deposit. These are certificates issued by a bank or trust company for a fixed term that earn specific rates of interest for that term. Some of them have minimum investments and involve redemption penalties. Whichever method you choose, remember it is important to save and save regularly. Statistics Canada surveys on aging and independence have found 50 per cent of Canadians 65 and over, and 41 per cent of those 45 to 64 had not made financial preparations for their retirement. In contrast, 18 per cent of those 65 and over and 20 per cent of those 45 to 64 had prepared for six or more years. In which category do you belong?

Gently Whispering the Circle Back

The Churchmice Players present

Residential schools have been a topic for discussion in healing circles.

For 116 years, thousands of Aboriginal children in Alberta were sent to Indian Residential Schools funded by the Government of Canada and run by churches, often forcibly taken from parents and communities, stripped of family ties, language and traditions. There were more residential schools in Alberta than in any other province. “The audience is drawn into the circle and the energy there,” said Wishart MacKenzie. “It’s having quite an effect on people because they feel like they’re sitting right there with the participants.” She noted that the survivors, as well as their children, are still suffering from the effects of the schools. “Many of the children of the survivors grew up in foster care or in broken homes,” she said. “They’re having to find themselves a way to wholeness and well-being. It’s become an inter-generational effect.”

Wishart MacKenzie resides in Edmonton and has taught comparative world religion at the University of Alberta since 2001. In 2012 she covered a professor’s sabbatical at the University of Alberta Augustana campus and taught world religion and women in religion. She said that she’s eager for her students to view the film. Her first film was a documentary called Unforgotten, about a cowboy from St. Paul. Up next is a documentary called Brothers in the Buddha, about a young Buddhist monk from Edmonton which should be completed by early summer. Wishart MacKenzie describes herself as having a diluted Metis background and identifies herself as a Canadian with mixed blood. “Knowing that blood flows in me helped me to honour and respect the community I was connecting with,” she said. The Blue Quills First

Nations College has an interesting story itself, being a former residential school. When residential schools were closing in the 1970s, several bands got together and held a sit in at the school, requesting to have control. Their bid was successful and since then it has been an institution dedicated to Aboriginal programming. Gently Whispering the Circle Back recently won the award for Best Documentary Short at the American Indian Film Festival in San Francisco. It will screen at the National Truth and Reconciliation Commission Event in Edmonton, March 27 to 30, which is the culmination of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s apology in 2008. Guests from Blue Quills First Nations College will join Wishart MacKenzie during the question and answer period after the screening on Feb. 16 at 3:30 p.m. at the Bailey.

CAMROSE & DAYSLAND

Robert “Bob” James Read of Ohaton, AB passed away on Friday, January 31, 2014 at the age of 59 years. Robert James Read was born on May 1, 1954, in Vancouver, BC. He was the second child for Jim and Vera, and younger brother to Joanne. As a teenager, Bob spent many of his weekends water skiing at Hatzic Lake in summer and downhill skiing at Manning. The skiing group became known as the Weekenders’ Ski Club. Bob also spent time scuba diving off Vancouver Island. After graduating high school in 1972, Bob began working for Columbia Drywall. In 1977, Bob decided to make Alberta his home. Moving to the Camrose area, he purchased a mobile home and moved into the “Wedgewood Place”. In August of 1978, he married Selina Olson. They welcomed their first son Brett Robert in 1981, and second son Logan Keith in 1984. The family moved the mobile home to the original homesite of Selina’s great-grandfather Oscar Olson in 1986. In 1989, Bob began building the family home. Bob’s work in Camrose started with A. Hansen and Sons and Norvan Services. He then began working for himself and also caught the farming bug, working during the day and farming after work with the guidance of Elmer Olson. Bob continued to grow his construction business and began Bob Read Contracting Ltd. in 1991. Small renovations began turning into larger projects. As the size of the jobs grew, Bob began to hire help. Soon the company had outgrown the home office and, in 2007, was relocated to Camrose. In recent years, Bob allowed himself to enjoy the rewards of his hard work. He looked forward to winter trips to warm locations, camping with the family and road trips. Sunday afternoons were reserved for spending time with his family and his new job as Grandpa. He will be sadly missed but never forgotten by: his wife Selina, and their family – Brett and Dana, Logan and Sarah; and granddaughters Chloe, Camryn and Lia; sister Joanne Read; father-in-law Larry Olson; sister-in-law Sue (Mark) Norton; brother-in-law Scott (Kim) Olson; and numerous nieces and nephews and their children. He was predeceased by his parents Jim and Vera; and mother-in-law Cherie Olson. A funeral service was held on Friday, February 7, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. from Messiah Lutheran Church (4810-50 Street, Camrose, AB) with Rev. Bill Harder and Rev. Brian Krushel officiating. Inurnment will take place in the Parkland Cemetery at a later date. Junior high students share storytelling skills By Murray Green

Charlie Killam School drama students honed their storytelling skills, while sending important messages to elementary children. The Grade 7 students selected old fables to perform in front of children from Chester Ronning School, École Sifton and Jack Stuart School from Jan. 31 to Feb. 4. The storytelling events were a literacy based educational community building experience. About 50 Charlie Killam students broke into six groups to perform the skits in front of live audiences with the intent of sharing stories with small, cross-graded groups of kindergarten to Grade 6 students. “Storytelling is a dying art and I wanted them to experience sharing stories. We are told stories by media, video games, movies and television shows, so the art is lost. This way the students dig into folk stories. They get to make them personal and perform them. It is a way of carrying on that traditional way of entertainment,” said Jon Lindstrand, CKS drama and humanities teacher. The students had to research their own folk tales and as a group decide on which one to do. “They had to cast the various parts and I gave them free rein on what they wanted to do with it, said Jon. “The students had a wide range of comfort coming into the class, but some of them are absolutely masterful. They are all competent by the end of the semester. It’s really nice to see.” The CKS students pushed their comfort zone by going

back to former schools and performing in front of siblings, or former teachers. Most of the subject matter consisted of lesser known folk stories, performed at small stations located around the schools. “The Grade 7 students worked as ambassadors to build relationships with the students of the three elementary schools, reinforce existing positive relationships and model the behavioral expectations of students,” said Jon. “My hope is that through the relationships built with these stories, future students will transition into the Charlie Killam environment more easily. Additionally, they hope to encourage the art of storytelling and inspire an interest in literacy.”

It was an opportunity for all students involved to showcase themselves as truly positive and necessary agents in our district’s community building goals of character and relationship nurturing. “This is one step in a three year process for the junior high students,” said Jon. “It’s one way of them taking ownership of their craftmanship.” It was a learning experience for the hosting school students as well. “Our students were able to see performances in front of them and build on relationships with students from other schools. The younger grades get the sense of storytelling and enthusiasm of their hard work,” said Miss Alicia Teeter, Grade 1/2 teacher at Chester Ronning School.

“Our students are learning lessons about folk tales and about morals through stories. We talk about the morals and lessons of the story.” The laughter from the younger students could be heard throughout the schools. “It was a fun experience and the students were so engaged with the stories. It was good to see. They were focused and intent on listening, so they were learning and thinking about what was being said. They were able to answer questions about the stories because they were listening and learning those lessons,” added Alicia. The performers enjoyed the connection with the younger audience as well. “We want to encourage

the future junior high students to pick options like drama to have fun,” said CKS student Kevin Ma. “The younger students are learning how to share and not be selfish to other people. We are showing that you should be kind to each other. This helps us if we want an acting career, or advance in drama and learn.” Ma and Justine Zowtuk were in the Four Dragons tale. “It’s about encouraging students to be themselves and not be selfish. You should put other people before you,” said Justine. “I like showing others that you don’t have to be afraid to stand up and be who you are. Storytelling is about explaining what you should do. It allows us to be a princess or a superman.”

City had good year with economic development By Dan Jensen

The City of Camrose made good progress in the area of economic development in 2013. “We saw increases in building permits, increases in housing, increases in businesses and increases in prospects,” said City of Camrose Economic Development Officer Ray Telford in a recent newsletter. The City was able to sell the Mohler 3 industrial lot, as well as another highway commercial lot located close to the casino. “This has left only two more east end commercial lots available,” said Telford. “There are various businesses inquiring about the high-

way commercial lots and, of course, various businesses are looking for industrial lots.” The Valleyview subdivision has only six lots left – two on 24 Avenue and 57 Street and four on 24 Avenue and 56 Street. The City unveiled a new six-minute video that was created to develop to develop new interest in local employment and investment opportunities, and to promote the benefits and quality of life in Camrose. “This video clearly illustrates the attractiveness of our community to new residents, employees and businesses,” said Mayor Norm Mayer. “The video is showcases on the

The City expects to see work on a new residential subdivision on the west end of Camrose Drive start in the spring of this year. “Camgill Enterprises Ltd. in Edmonton is the developer and will have single family, multifamily and retail sections in that quarter,” said Telford. “Camgill has been a developer for over 30 years and their current

Augustana curlers advance to provincials By Murray Green

Augustana men’s and mixed rinks qualified for the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference curling provincials with a strong showing in Edmonton on Jan. 31 and Feb. 2. “All three teams lost their first game and got off to a slow start,” said coach Roger Galenza. “They all came back and curled well in the second game. The men beat NAIT, which was the top team.” Augustana finished second the previous two years before grabbing third this year. The men’s team of skip Andrew Evans, third Brad Schroeder, second Wyatt Warawa and lead Colton Warawa followed up a 3-1 record in the fall with a 4-2 result to hold a 7-3 record and a share of third place in the standings. The top four rinks advanced to the provincials on Feb. 21 to 23 that will be hosted by Lakeland College in Vermilion. NAIT at 9-1, MacEwan at 8-2 and Portage also at 7-3 moved on to the ACAC championships with Augustana. The mixed team also curled well to advance to the final four. The Vikings went 2-2 in the fall and again they had an even record of 3-3 to place third after two rounds. NAIT at 9-1, Olds at 7-3 and Lakeland at 3-7 also advanced to the final bonspiel. “They beat Olds to feel comfortable and confident going into provincials,” said Galenza. The mixed team was made up of skip Ben Bates, third Mari McLachlan, second Mike Mosich and lead Jessica Marchand. Although the team has changed, the Vikings are going for their fourth gold in four years. Spare Brandon Brown will be playing second at provincials because of a class conflict for Mike. “We picked Brandon up in January to add to our team. He is from Coronation and has skipped before, so he should fit right in with the team,” said Roger. MacEwan topped the women’s event at 8-2. A four-way tie for second place didn’t sit well with the Vikings. After going 3-1 on the first weekend, the squad went 3-3, which put them behind Lakeland and Red Deer. “Prior to the winter

bonspiel they have a shootout to determine tie-breakers and they didn’t fare as well on those,” coach said. That forced a one game sudden death game between the Wolves and the Vikings for the last playoff spot. “You can’t lose out in playoffs in a shoot-out, so our fourth place team played the fifth place Grande Prairie rink. Unfortunately, we lost that game in an extra end. We beat NAIT and had a strong game against MacEwan, again losing in an extra end. The girls were upset and disappointed because they curled so well. It will be extra motivation for the team next year. All four plan on coming back next year.”

Augustana fell just short of their bid to advance. The women’s foursome consists of skip Sarah Brown, third Ashley Smith, second Taryn Williams and lead Lynnelle Mahe. “I still want to work on strategy and deliveries until provincials,” said coach Roger. “I’m extremely happy with all three teams. We have shown the ACAC that we are competitive across the board.” Nationals for women’s and men’s teams will be in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, March 18 to 22. “They want a full slate of teams at nationals, so it is possible that the ACAC could have up to three teams in both women’s and

Jeep Grand Cherokee Redefining the premium SUV

John Wigston By Dan Jensen

The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee at Camrose Chrysler completely redefines the premium SUV, delivering an unprecedented combination of best-in-class fuel economy and driving range, available clean-diesel technology, a choice of leading powertrain options, legendary benchmark capability, world-class craftsmanship, premium on-road driving dynamics, and a host of advanced userfriendly technology and safety features. “The industry’s most highly acclaimed SUV has been elevated to an even higher level,” said Camrose Chrysler sales manager Noel Skoglund. “Our customers will clearly find the new Jeep Grand Cherokee to be even more of a pleasure to drive – on any and all roads, on the most demanding trails, and in all weather conditions. Jeep Grand Cherokee’s 3.0 litre EcoDiesel V-6 engine produces 240 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque while using just 11.2 litres per 100 km in the city and just 7.84 litres per 100 km on the highway. The engine’s block and bed plate is crafted from strong compacted graphite iron, which contributes to stiffness without penalizing performance. Grand Cherokee’s standard 3.6 litre Pentastar V-6 uses just 9.41 litres per 100 km on the highway, a nine per

cent jump from the previous model year. The engine generates 291 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. Structural, intake and exhaust areas are designed to deliver low levels of overall noise and achieve specific sound quality goals that meet discerning customer requirements. The 5.7 litre V-8 produces 360 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque, and boasts a towing capacity of 7,400 lbs. VVT technology improves fuel economy in two ways: first it reduces the engine’s pumping work by closing the intake valve later. Second, it increases the expansion process of the combustion event. This allows more work to be transferred to the crankshaft instead of being rejected out of the exhaust port as heat. VVT improves engine breathing, which further improves engine efficiency and power. The 5.7-litre engine’s Fuel Saver Technology with cylinder de-activation seamlessly alternates between smooth, high-fuel-economy four-cylinder mode when less power is needed, and V-8 mode when more power is in demand. All three Jeep Grand Cherokee engines are now attached to Chrysler Group’s new eight-speed automatic transmission, which provides better fuel economy, quicker acceleration and smoother shifting. Fully electronic, the eight-speed automatic

features on-the-fly shift map changing, with manual shifting capability and Electronic Range Select using steeringwheel paddle controls. More than 40 individual shift maps for specific conditions optimize shift quality and shift points for fuel economy, performance and drivability. The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee features three available 4x4 systems. Quadra-Trac I delivers fulltime four-wheel drive without any switches or levers to pull. The system provides smooth operation of the vehicle over a variety of road conditions. This light-weight singlespeed case is both proven and efficient for enhanced fuel economy. Quadrac-Trac II’s two-speed transfer case uses input from a variety of sensors to determine tire slip at the earliest possible moment and takes corrective action. The system also uses throttle anticipate to sense quick movement in the throttle from a stop and maximizes traction before tire slippage occurs. When wheel slippage is detected, as much as 100 per cent of available torque is instantly routed to the axle with the most traction. Quadra-Drive II with a rear Electronic Limited-slip Differential (ELSD) delivers industry-leading tractive capability. The system instantly detects tire slip and smoothly distributes engine torque to tires with traction.

In some cases, the vehicle will anticipate low traction and adjust in order to proactively limit or eliminate slip. The Jeep Grand Cherokee rises above the road and rocks with the rugged Quadra-Lift air suspension system. The Quadra-Life system features five height settings for optimum ride performance. Grand Cherokee’s classleading Selec-Terrain traction control system allows customers to choose the on- and off-road settings for optimum performance. This feature electronically coordinates up to 12 different powertrain, braking and suspension systems, including throttle control, transmission shift, transfer case, Hill-descent Control, and Selec-Speed Control. All 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokees equipped with the Off-road groups are Trail Rated. The Jeep Trail Rated gadget indicates that the vehicle is designed to perform in a variety of challenging road conditions identified by five key consumer-oriented performance categories: traction, ground clearance, maneuverability, articulation and water fjording. Jeep Grand Cherokee’s 114.8 inch wheelbase creates generous interior room and gives passengers expansive rear-seat knee and leg room,

and large front door openings and rear doors open 78 degrees for better access to the interior. Inside, premium seating includes room for five passengers. A standard foldflat rear passenger seat provides improved cargo storage room. For added passenger comfort, rear seats recline 12 degrees. Cargo volume behind the second row measures 36.3 cubic feet and includes a storage unit with a rechargeable flashlight and grocery hooks on both sides. The spare tire compartment includes removable dual storage bins for secure storage of muddy gear or other items. From the driver’s seat, everything the driver sees, touches – and even speaks to using voice commands – is enhanced to increase function, connectivity and responsiveness. Not only does it work better, it looks better packaged in more premium materials and elegant graphics. This includes a redesigned steering wheel that is optimized for driver position while also providing control buttons for frequently-used features such as radio, cruise control, phone and voice-activated commands. You can see the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee by visiting Camrose Chrysler on Highway 13 East, Camrose. Phone 780-672-2476 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

Eagles soar over Kodiaks in weekend series CREATIVE AD SIZE

Two penalties led to the demise of the Camrose Kodiaks in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Olds Grizzlys on Feb. 4. Camrose was up 2-1 late in the contest before Olds scored in the last two minutes on a power play. An early penalty in overtime also derailed the Kodiaks as their rival bears connected with another man advantage marker. “We took a bad penalty in the last two or three minutes of the game and it really cost us. In overtime, we lost our man and had no choice but to haul down the man in front. Penalties were an issue,” stated defenceman Dallas Bergstrom. “Discipline is going to be key for us. We have to stay out of the box. Our power play has been better, but now we are struggling a little on penalty killing. We are just giving the other teams too many opportunities. We need to shake it off and have a good bounce back shift.” Scott Ferguson and Trevor Costello scored for Camrose, while goalie Devin McDonald made 19 of 22 saves on the night. The Kodiaks recorded 24 shots on the Olds net. The Kodiaks allowed seven goals in two straight periods to come up empty handed in a two game series against the Canmore Eagles on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. The first game also cost Camrose the services of the local defenceman for a few games. “We just have to shake that weekend off, have a good week of practicing and focus strong on doing our jobs,”

shots he faced. Camrose rallied in the third by outshooting the Eagles 14-5, but netminder Ryan Ferguson was equal to the task. Bear facts

said Dallas, who pulled a groin against Canmore not long after coming back from another injury. “I don’t everyone was on their best game over the weekend. It’s frustrating losing to the team you want to beat and we have to be ready for them in the next game. That will be a physical one and everyone will be revved to go.” Camrose built a 3-0 lead in the first game before the wheels fell off of the bears’ bus. Luc Vandale scored on a power play opportunity in the first. Mark Nerland and Spencer Kryczka padded the lead in the second. However, it was all Eagles in the third period as they were on the hunt for the two points. They netted four

straight tallies including the winner with 17 seconds left on the clock. “We had a bit of a melt down in the third. We had one or two goals scored against us and then we lost our composure. We let them get to us instead of shaking it off,” said Dallas. Goalie Devin McDonald played well until he was abandoned in the last period. He stopped 26 of 30 shots. Canmore is a team that could face the Kodiaks in the playoffs. “It is looking like we might play them and otherwise we have played well against them,” added Dallas. “In the second game we didn’t play too bad. The first six minutes we were punishing

them, but they scored first. It was tough to get so many chances and then they score on one. We didn’t capitalized on it and it was tough to recover.” The Eagles’ momentum continued to soar in the rematch. Canmore garnered three goals in three minutes to tame the bears in the opening period and skated away with a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes. Canmore added a single tally in the second and third frames to earn a 5-1 victory in what was touted as a battle for fourth place in the south division of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. Connor Mailey collected the only tally for the Kodiaks. Goaltender Matt Zentner turned away 28 of the 33

The next home game for the Kodiaks is on Feb. 14 when the Spruce Grove Saints are here on Valentine’s Day. Remember to wear your Calgary Flames jersey as a tribute on Joe Colborne night. “It’s going to be a cool experience for us. It means that anything is possible. He played in the AJHL and with the Kodiaks. It proves you don’t have to play in the WHL to get noticed,” said Dallas, who watched Joe play for the Kodiaks. “It’s an inspiration to us knowing that we have a great organization and staff that can help us achieve our goals. For most of us, we want to receive a NCAA scholarship and play in the States. Getting an education is the best thing I can think of. If it leads to the CIS or ACAC then it helps our education as well.” The 13th annual Fountain Tire Skills Day has been set for Sunday, Feb. 16. Camrose has just three more home games left, beginning with the Family Day encounter with the Calgary Mustangs at 2 p.m. Other home games are on Feb. 23 against the Canucks at 2 p.m. and a 7 p.m. start against their bear cousins, the Olds Grizzlys on Feb. 28. The playoffs begin in early March.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.
