Council closing in on solution to safety issue at day care By Dan Jensen

Camrose City council will be looking at removing the trees and a grass boulevard in front of Gardner Kids Campus day care to create a safe drop-off area for parents and their children. Gardner board secretary treasurer Howard Hildebrand told council Jan. 20 that a dedicated loading and unloading area would allow parents to do drop offs away from the through traffic. “It would give them five or six feet of extra comfort,” said Hildebrand. Council did not agree with Lars Hallstrom, a parent of three children who attend the day care, that a reduction in speed on 47 Avenue would create a safer situation. “My basic concern is whether the speed limit is 20, 30 or 50 there are always be jerks that speed on that avenue,” said councillor Agnes Hoveland. “To solve the problem entirely is not to allow any parking on the avenue and just allow stopping and safe unloading on the street instead of the avenue.” Councillor Bill Sears said the danger in the area is more of a traffic problem than a speed problem. “Speed is part of it, but it seems to me it is the traffic, and dropping off children in traffic situations. I would like some way to get those children away from traffic. I am not so sure that a speed limit is going to solve that problem.” Sears also noted that he would like to see a drop off zone on the side of the Gardner Kids Campus day care as well as the front. “I am wondering how we can accommodate more parking and people crossing the street,” said Sears. Hallstrom noted that with the number of vehicles that speed on 47 Avenue in front of the day care it is only a matter of time before there is an unfortunate accident. “I am very concerned that about one child running out onto the street during pick up and drop off. And as we know, a vehicle travelling at 70 km per hour versus a vehicle travelling at 50, which is the regular speed limit, versus 30 will have longer stopping distances. The vehicle that is travelling slower will be able to better manage the unforeseen, i.e. a child escaping from his or her parent.” Hallstrom also noted that utilizing the pre-existing parking spaces on the former Gardner campus may result in a situation where the risk is increased, not decreased for the children. “There is increased possibility of something happening the longer that children are exposed to a sidewalk on the street where vehicles are speeding, i.e., 47 Avenue. Having the children walk 150 metres walk with a parental escort increases the possibility.” Hallstrom said there have been precedents set in other Alberta communities where the area around new day cares has been designated as a playground zone, which includes a 30 km speed limit. Canada Post releases guiding principles for deliveries Canada Post is committed to ensuring that the transition of delivery service in Canadian communities will be handled responsibly and with respect towards customers and municipalities. The principles are: Canada Post recognizes that dense urban cores in our larger cities, with their older neighbourhoods and smaller lots, present different challenges for locating community mailboxes than suburban areas. Accordingly, Canada Post will leave the majority of these areas until the final stage of this multi-year project. The postal service will take the necessary time to understand their unique needs and find solutions that work for these neighbourhoods. Canada Post will be sensitive to the needs of seniors and of disabled Canadians. Canada Post is developing alternative approaches

for people with significant mobility challenges, who lack viable alternatives and upon whom delivery to a community mailbox would impose an unacceptable hardship. There will be no change in delivery to people living in apartment buildings, seniors’ buildings and condominiums who already have mail delivered in the building lobby. In addition, customers who have mail delivered to a rural mailbox (a customer-owned mailbox at the end of a driveway) will not be affected by this change. The postal service will work with community leaders and municipal planning officials to choose safe and appropriate sites. Canada Post will seek the views of affected citizens directly, through multiple channels including direct mail surveys and online feedback tools.

The Crown corporation will be as innovative and flexible as possible, while fulfilling its responsibility to protect the financial sustainability of postal service for all Canadians. It will look at various solutions and different equipment, taking the necessary time to address any significant challenges in a given community. Canada Post will respect the needs of businesses to have mail delivered to their door. The vast majority of business addresses will continue to have mail and parcels delivered to their door and will experience no change. The businesses that will continue to have delivery to the door are located in well-established business areas, such as main streets or “business corridors” or receive a relatively large volume of mail or parcels. Canada Post is committed to keeping Canadians

informed and to implementing the conversion to community mailbox delivery in a thoughtful way. The conversion of delivery at the door to community mailbox delivery will have no impact on the two thirds of Canadian households that already receive their mail and parcels through community mailboxes, grouped or lobby mailboxes or rural mailboxes. Community mailboxes offer individually locked mail and small packet compartments as well as locked compartments for securely receiving parcels. The initial neighbourhoods slated for conversion in the second half of 2014 will be announced in the coming weeks once plans are finalized. Converting the remaining five million Canadian households that receive mail delivery to the door to community mailbox delivery

was announced in December 2013 as part of Canada Post’s Five-point Action Plan. Together, the initiatives announced in this plan will protect Canada’s postal service for future generations. Ignoring Canada’s massive shift away from mail to digital alternatives would put Canada Post on track for substantial yearly losses that would threaten the existence of the postal service. The conversion will provide significant savings to Canada Post by allowing it to hire only those delivery employees it needs to replace departing employees during a wave of retirements. Canada Post expects nearly 15,000 employees to retire or leave the company over the next five years. This is more than enough to allow for the reduction of between 6,000 and 8,000 positions, mainly through attrition.

Centra Cam set to roll with 17th annual Bowl-a-thon

Letters to the Editor In a winter such as the one we are experiencing this year, I begin to wonder whether our City needs to revisit its bylaws about sidewalk clearing, or consider adding bylaw enforcement staff. Everyone has issues of scheduling or energy that allows for slightly different level of diligence in getting out to clear, but our City is very generous in allowing homeowners 72 hours after the end of a snowfall to clear their walks. Bottom line, though, is each homeowner/resident needs to know that part of living in a house or property with public sidewalks is the responsibility of keeping the walkways safe and usable. Now that we’ve had a big melt and a return to freez-

ing it becomes abundantly clear that those who have never thoroughly cleared the snow, but rather allowed it to pack down, have created quite a hazard. Even though they might have tamped the snow down to the city’s suggested width (to allow passage of a wheelchair or scooter), as soon as that huge melt happened, the only possible result was a very uneven surface that ends up being slick to the point of impassable or dangerous. If it’s not already on the books, the City needs to change the bylaws to expect more thorough clearing in order to avoid the inevitable thaw/freeze mess that forces many to become homebound for weeks or months. I encourage everyone

who has a treacherous sidewalk to really look at it and consider some of the following: can someone with physical limitations walk safely? Can someone pushing a stroller use the walk without horribly bouncing the child? Then when treating a sidewalk (since even those of us who clear regularly have had ice/water seepage with the melting), is there a way to keep it safe without harming the paws of passing animals, the concrete itself, or our plants in the spring? If we all look at it from the perspective of helping one another, instead of drudge work, perhaps we can make winter walking in Camrose safer for everyone. Joy-Anne Murphy, Camrose

The land on which we stand

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Centra Cam client bowler Les Knudsen practices throwing strikes at Tabb Lanes to prepare for the annual bowl-a-thon on March 17. Bowlers are asked to seek pledges for the event, which raises money for Centra Cam programs. By Murray Green

Bowling is critical in keeping Centra Cam’s programs operating and helps offset rising costs the organization faces each year. The 17th annual Centra Cam Vocational Training Association’s Bowl-A-Thon will be held on March 7 at Tabb Lanes. About 90 bowlers will hit the lanes from 1 to 3 p.m. to raise funds. “The purpose of the bowl-a-thon is to increase the awareness of Centra Cam clients, staff and board members,” said event chairman David Tanton, of the association. “It also assists us raise funds to keep up with the rising costs of offering the various programs.” There will be teams entered from local businesses and financial institutions. Businesses compete for the Challenge Cup, while the financial institutions battle for a separate Bank Challenge Cup. The cup winners are the teams that raise the most money. “There will be some excellent bowling and a great afternoon of fun and recreation,” added David. “The participants will be able to win prizes donated by local businesses, which have always been very supportive of the event. Along with the fun of bowling, all participants can win door prizes for the top fundraisers and top bowlers.” David asks people to support the bowlers on their pledge sheets. You can also make a donation to the bowl-a-thon on Centra Cam’s website, or phone 780-6729995.

The stories we hear about Camrose usually go back to the small log cabin built by Ole Bakken, a Norwegian settler, who was later followed by others coming from Wetaskiwin, and through which the railway ran. The community was first named Sparling (after a reverend) and then renamed Camrose (after a village in South Wales) to avoid confusion with other cities. And so today our friends and relatives think it must be so beautiful to live in Canmore. The Norwegian and Lutheran connections of the settlers continue to shape the demographics and the culture of the city to this day, even as it becomes increasingly religiously and culturally diverse – and Canadian. There is a good reason why we do not hear about people being settlers anymore: we see the whole territory as already occupied. There is no land left to settle. But because we see ourselves as the owners of this territory and because we have made it our own, we continue to take part in the settler mentality. That mentality depends on the fiction that land was there for the taking for millions to start a new life. New lives, new communities, a new country: we established ourselves on a blank slate, on a new land. However, that fiction of a blank slate goes against another history. Of course, we know about the presence of the Cree and Blackfoot nations in the general area surrounding what is now Camrose, and stretching as far as Red Deer, the Rockies, and perhaps even Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. In mid-January, four Elders from the First Nations located near Maskwacis came to speak to a gathering of Camrose community members, as well as students, staff and instructors of the Augustana Campus. These two men and two women are recognized in their communities as being

knowledgeable about the land and its history, and so we asked them to tell us what they felt we ought to know about the land where we live, study, and work. We heard about Asiniskaw Sipisis (“Camrose”) being part of a highway, a point through which various groups travelled through a territory they occupied through their movements rather than by enclosing it within fences. Sacred sites are still present all over this territory, and many people still visit them to pray and make offerings. That territory included what we now call Wetaskiwin, a deformation of witaskiwin-ispatinaw, “peace hills.” And I was surprised that three of the four Elders included stories about Residential Schools in the short time they had to speak to us. My reaction was to ask myself: since these stories contain knowledge and directions, why did they tell them to us, here, now, in this context? I want to offer my own answer, both in gratitude for the stories I heard and to convey them to others. The practice of forcing Indigenous children to live in Residential Schools, where their language, culture, and spirituality would be violently taken away, goes hand

in hand with the practice of renaming the places they inhabited. The assimilation of a people goes together with appropriating their land. And what is more, the Residential Schools have left a mark on the land: they are the physical link between our present and the times before the “settlement” of this land. Stories about these schools have only begun to be told, thanks to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. (The TRC has already heard from Residential School Survivors in Maskwacis and will be holding a national event in Edmonton on March 27-30.) One of the many challenges First Nations face in Canada is to reclaim their culture and their territory: many cultural practices must take place on the land, in specific places. And after all, like anyone else, members of First Nations want to be able to state with pride where they are from and use their own words to do so. Renaming their community according to its traditional name, Maskwacis (“bear hills”), instead of Hobbema (a Dutch painter), is only one step. A previous step included building a new Ermineskin School, controlled by the band and staffed by members of First Nations, on the site of the Ermineskin Residential School. Many Indigenous activists and scholars are saying that the success of this cultural revival does not depend on the recognition or help of Canadians of European descent. However, they stress that reconciliation through attempts by these Canadians (such as myself) at overcoming their settler mentality would go a long way toward breaking down the barriers that continue to stand in the way of equality, freedom, and dignity. It seems to me that it’s time to learn other stories and help make new ones on the land on which we can stand together.

tion in the mouth of an animal can cause dental health problems. Some factors predispose an animal to periodontal health problems: canine breeds with flat noses or an animal that mainly breathes through its mouth. Prevention is always the best method. Animals need to have their teeth brushed regularly, just like us. It is imperative to accustom them to having their teeth and gums handled by the age of two months so teeth brushing will be a breeze when they are adults.

Good dental hygiene is a gift for life Brushing our teeth is part of our daily routine so why shouldn’t it be the same for our pets? If you care about your little fluff ball, then you should know that its general state of health is directly related to its oral health. And when it comes to a pet’s teeth, prevention is always the best option. According to the results of a study on this subject, barely 1 percent of pet owners brush their animals’ teeth at least three times a week, even though veterinarians highly recommend the practice. But don’t worry; it is not too late to start following this recommendation.

Warning signs Does your animal have a dental disease? Check for the following signs and symptoms: • bad breath, also known as halitosis — of course, most animals don’t exactly have what we would call “freshâ€? breath, but if their breath becomes truly offensive it could be a sign of periodontal disease • build-up of a yellow film on the teeth. • a tendency to rub the face or mouth • a reluctance to eat hard foods or swallowing food without chewing • a swelling of the gums along with reddish-brown stains on the teeth

Periodontal disease Periodontal disease is the most common infectious disease in pets. It results from an infection due to an accumulation of plaque, which contains large amounts of bacteria. When it accumulates and begins to harden, plaque forms tarter.

Be sure to consult your veterinarian if one or more of these symptoms appear. A vet will be able to diagnose the problem, carry out any necessary treatment, and give you some tips in order to improve your pet’s dental hygiene.

Pet owners can tend to be more concerned about the outward appearance of their animals while ignoring other subtler signs of poor health. For example, a dog with a soft, silky coat gives the impression of being in perfect health, but it may be suffering from damaging dental bacteria. February’s Pet Dental Health Month is a great opportunity to raise pet owners’ awareness of this subject. Some research studies have shown surprising data that demonstrate a link between dental health and the health of the body’s major organs. That is, bacterial accumula-

Kidney Fund dinner By Dan Jensen

The Camrose Kidney Fund will be hosting a special dinner in recognition of pioneers Rita and (the late) Ken Nyback and Marlene and Wayne Gaalas at the Norsemen Inn Feb. 19. Dinner will start at 6 p.m. “We are hoping to have about 80 people in attendance, including many who have canvassed for the Kidney Foundation throughout the years,” said Erhard Pinno, coordinator of the Kidney Foundation of Canada March Drive in Camrose. The dinner will feature presentations by special guests Kathy Stasko, the mother of the late Kerry Stasko, whose organs were used to save or improve the lives of 40 people, Dr. Raymond Ulan, a retired nephrologist, and Flavia Robles, executive director of the Kidney Foundation in Edmonton. “Dr. Ulan was instrumental in the distribution of home dialysis machines in the 1970s,” said Pinno. “The dialysis unit at the University of Alberta Hospital is named after him.” Tickets for the dinner may be obtained by calling Pinno at 780-672-1629.

Nyback started the Camrose Kidney Fund in the early 1970s as a way of helping someone he knew was in need. “I was in a Camrose business one day when I noticed this man (Wayne Gaalaas) who was in very poor condition,” said Nyback at a Kidney Fund event in 2007. “I talked to his employer, and he told me that he had been going to Edmonton for kidney dialysis three or four times a week, and that he had about all he could stand.” Wanting to learn more, Nyback talked to a doctor, who informed him that what the person needed was a home dialysis machine. “He (the doctor) told me that he would be a good candidate for one because his wife is a nurse, but that the cost of one of the machines would be $7,200,” said Nyback. After visiting with his banker, who was sympathet-

ic to what he wanted to do, Nyback told the doctor to go ahead and place the order. “I didn’t have the money to pay for it myself, so I went out to the community to start raising money,” said Nyback. “I was at more knitting and tea parties than you can imagine, raising $25 here and $25 there. It actually turned out to be a lot of fun.” Nyback did most of the work by himself for a while, before being joined by others, including Ed Lauer. “Once we got going we were able to put on bigger fundraising events like oyster suppers at the Camrose Drill Hall and hip of beef barbecues on my farm,” he said. “I specifically remember one barbecue where we entertained members of the Canadian Kidney Foundation, who were meeting in Edmonton, because we had five Greyhound buses lined up in our yard.” In the 15 years he spent with the Camrose Kidney Fund (it was eventually amalgamated into the Northern Alberta and the Territories Branch), Nyback helped raise enough money to purchase three home dialysis machines. “I was always amazed with the generosity of the people we met,” he said. “I was at an auction mart one time when an old Mennonite gentleman from the New Norway area came up to me and asked how we were doing on the collections. When I told him we were a little short, he went to the desk, took out a cheque book, and wrote a cheque for the balance, no questions asked. “Later I found out that he had already mailed in a donation before that.” The Camrose Kidney Fund is interested in hearing from individuals or service clubs who/which participated in the community-wide fundraising that led to the purchase of a home hemodialysis machine for Gaalaas in 1970. The dinner will also serve as a kickoff to the Kidney Foundation’s March campaign in Camrose and area.

Day care safety concerns Continued from page 4

He said at minimum he would like to see the area around the Kids Campus be identified as a playground area. “Myself and Sandy Mize, the director of the day care, have completed a worksheet and arrived at numbers that point to at minimum signage as a playground area.” Day care assistant director Suzanne Dumont explained that the day care has sent letters asking parents not to stop on the south side of 47 Avenue if at all possible, but that with the snow it is still an issue. “We have upwards of 100 children that are coming and going throughout the day.” Dumont said that a few signs identifying the area as a hot spot in which there are children could go a long ways to decreasing the risk factors. “One of the reasons you have school zones is to let the drivers know there are children in the area. We have the same area here. It shouldn’t be difficult to put up signs.” Councillor Ray McIsaac said he has heard loud and clear from many people who use 47 Avenue that they do not want a speed reduction, and that parents need to take greater responsibility for the safety of their children. Hildebrand said in a letter written to council that making changes to the layout of the day care facility (to accommodate additional parking spaces) would be virtually impossible. “I can not envision any way to have drop off anywhere other than how it is done now, that would work, and believe me we have done a lot of brainstorming and have not found any viable alternative.”

Camrose Skating Club senior Starskater Kaitlyn Duggan did something rare when she passed her gold level tests in a fourth discipline during a test day in Stettler Jan. 20. Kaitlyn has now passed her gold level tests in dance, skills, interpretive and free skate. “Passing the gold level tests in all four of the disciplines is something that not many skaters are able to do,” said Duggan’s coach, Sara Zylka. “We know of only one other skater in the Camrose club (Jana Gau) who has achieved quad gold.” Duggan’s free skate test required her to put together a program and train for all of the elements within it. “She was very prepared,” said Zylka. “The hard part was to make sure she was doing all the elements consistently. The work paid off because her entire skate was amazingly clean.” Duggan has been attending two hour practices three times a week. “I have been tremendously impressed with her level and commitment and dedication,” said Zylka. “She

Kaitlyn Duggan

is a coach’s dream because she is always out here at the arena skating. She was so motivated to pass her gold level tests in freeskate program that, if she had been able, she would have been here every day.”

Duggan, who is now 17, has been a member of the Camrose Skating Club for the past 13 years, starting with CanSkate. She is presently in her last year of high school and is looking at going into general university studies in either Camrose or Edmonton next fall. “I’m going to be busy with studies, but I want to continue with my skating, either by myself or as a coach,” said Duggan. “I used to coach the CanSkate Program, but I found that with going to high school and doing my own training that it just got to be too much.” Duggan is currently getting ready for a Starskate Alberta regional event versus some tough competition at St. Albert in March. “The testing that was done in Stettler will ensure that she will be skating against the best skaters,” said Zylka. “She could go into the area of competitive skating after this year if she wanted but that is a decision that she will have to make at another time.”

Heaven’s Kitchen event will provide fine dining Feb. 14 By Dan Jensen

It should be the ultimate in fine dining. The Calvary Pentecostal Church youth group will be preparing a four course meal for up to 100 guests during a Heaven’s Kitchen competition and fundraiser this Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14). “We’re going to be dividing them into two teams, a red team and a blue team,” said Calvary Pentecostal Church youth pastor Zachary Dye-Wilson. “The team that receives the most positive feedback from the customers will be declared the winner.

Challenge Day at Camrose Composite High School Feb. 19 Submitted

Imagine a world where every child feels safe, loved and celebrated. A world where bullying, violence and oppression are things of the past. This is the work of Challenge Day. It is bringing students, staff and community members closer together. For the past six years, Camrose Composite High School, in conjunction with and sponsorship from community organizations and local businesses, has had the privilege of hosting this unique and inspiring event. The overall goal of this internationally recognized program is to encourage and inspire people to create the schools and communities that respect diversity, defy stereotypes, encourage empathy and compassion, and to be an active part in creating the world that we all really wish to see. Visit www. ch a l l en ge d ay.o r g for more details. Challenge Day will be held at CCHS on Wednesday, Feb. 19. If you are a community member who wishes to participate as an adult facilitator, contact the school at 780-672-4416.

“In a way, the guests will then be the food critic.” The event will be held at Calvary Pentecostal Church (the former Extra Foods building), which features a commercial-grade kitchen with stainless steel equipment. “The guests will be entertained while watching the youth cook and serve,” said Dye-Wilson. The youth will be assisted with their food preparation by Peace River’s Debra Dye, who is well-known in the Camrose area for having catered hundreds of events over the years. “She’ll be making sure

the food is cooked to the proper temperatures and meets safety standards,” said Dye-Wilson, who will be coordinating the presentation and the garnishment of the food. Entrees from which guests will be able to choose include salmon with bernaise sauce and chicken cordon blue. A decision on a third entry has still not been made. The competition and dinner is one that the youth are eagerly anticipating. “We’re going to have 15 to 20 youth participating, so between seven and ten

per side,” said Wilson-Dye. “Some of them are pretty accomplished as cooks while some might have trouble boiling an egg.” The team that loses will have the chore of doing the dishes after the meal has been served. “It’s going to be a good clean competition that should be a lot of fun for both the youth who will be doing the cooking and the guests,” said Dye-Wilson. Along with enjoying the meal, guests will have the opportunity to bid on items in a silent auction, including two Nintendo DS machines supplied by Camrose Video

Store, a gift basket supplied by Starbucks, a Tassimo machine, paintings, pictures and books. Money raised from the auction and the sale of tickets will be used to support the youth club with activities such as weekly gatherings and attendance at youth conferences. Tickets to the Heaven’s Kitchen competition/dinner may be purchased for $30 each or $50 for a pair from Calvary Pentecostal Church between 9:30 a.m. and noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday. Only 100 tickets will be printed so if you are interested in attending you need to act fast.

R&D Hot Tubs picks up pair of awards By Dan Jensen

R&D Hot Tubs received some much deserved recognition at the North American conference of convention of Hydro Pool dealers in Niagara Falls Dec. 2, to 4. A Camrose-based business owned by Russ and Doneal Greipl, R&D Hot Tubs was named the winner of a Hydro Pool’s platinum award for excellence, marketing and customer service and a Gary Thibert award for the highest sales increase over the previous year. The award was accepted on behalf of the Greipls by R&D Hot Tubs’ territorial manager. “We were totally shocked and honoured to receive the award considering there are 150 other Hydro Pool dealers across North America,” said Doneal. “It says a lot about our business and how we stack up with dealers that are in communities much bigger than ours.” The award is the third major one the Greipls have received in the past two years. They received the silver award for excellence in marketing, sales and customer service when the national conference and convention was held in Puerto Rico in 2012. “We weren’t able to attend either of the conventions because we were too busy,” said Doneal.

Russ and Doneal Greipl with the platinum award for excellence, customer service and marketing, and the Gary Thibert award for the highest sales increase over the previous year. The awards were presented at the North American conference of Hydro Pool dealers in Niagara Falls in December.

The Greipls have always been quick to credit their customers for whatever success they have enjoyed. “We wouldn’t have received any awards if it wasn’t for our strong customer base,” said Doneal. “We appreciate the trust the customers have placed in us. They know they are purchasing a great product and that we will be there for

them after the sale has been made.” R&D Hot Tubs opened its doors on July 1, 2008, and became a Hydro Pool dealer in April of 2011. “The hot tubs and swim spas by Hydro Pool are the only ones that we sell,” said Doneal. “We decided we wanted to carry a product that was Canadian made, so after doing a lot of research on different Canadian com-

panies we chose them. The beliefs they have as a company are similar to ours and they value their dealers in the same way that we value our customers. They also have a lot of experience, as they have been manufacturing quality hot tubs for the last 33 years. It is a very good product all around.” The Doneals have been repairing hot tubs for the last 20 years.

OLMP receives funds for modernization By Murray Green

Our Lady of Mount Pleasant School (OLMP) has been given the green light on modernizing the Career and Technology Studies (CTS) area of the junior and senior high school. We t a s k i w i n - C a m rose MLA Verlyn Olson announced on Jan. 27 that the government will invest in a new modernization project as part of its Building Alberta Plan. “This new project reinforces our commitment to investing in Alberta’s fami-

lies and communities. We are making certain that students and communities, today and long into the future, have the world-class school facilities they need to learn and be successful,” said Olson. The modernization project will modify interior areas to better meet educational programming needs and increasing enrollments. OLMP School was built in 1962. School additions were made in 1983, 2006 and 2007. The addition of a new

CTS space will enhance students’ learning opportunities. With current high enrollment and anticipated increases, the school cannot accommodate the required need for CTS instructional area in the one existing CTS space. “I am very pleased that OLMP School is included in the modernization initiative,” said Olson. “Making the best use of existing space and investing wisely ensures our Camrose students benefit from having the most

modern, up-to-date facility possible.” Last spring, Premier Redford committed to build and modernize 120 schools throughout the province. This new modernization project is one example of how the province is building Alberta’s school infrastructure. Additional school projects are being announced in the next couple of weeks. Additional details on the Camrose project, as it becomes available, can be found online.

RRSPs or mortgage? Rebecca Nelson, Financial Advisor, Edward Jones

It’s a common dilemma for many Canadians – should you pay down your mortgage or contribute to a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) instead? Unfortunately, there’s no easy or definitive answer. What works for one person may not work for another. It all depends on your particular circumstances, plus factors related to economic conditions and developments in the financial markets. To help you determine what might be right for you, here are some issues to consider. Interest rates – how much will you save by paying down the mortgage? You might find historically low interest rates to be a factor in favour of investing in an RRSP. That’s because paying off a low-rate mortgage doesn’t offer the same level of savings as paying off a higher-rate mortgage. But remember that as rates move up, mortgage savings could take on renewed importance. Higher rates mean higher interest costs, which means you’ll probably save more by reducing or eliminating your mortgage principal. When it’s time to renew at higher rates, you’ll have less of an outstanding mortgage. Investment returns – how much can you earn on your investments? Remember, an RRSP boosts returns by allowing your investments to grow within a tax-deferred environment. And don’t forget the immediate tax break your annual RRSP contribution provides. You need to determine whether the returns from a lump sum put into your RRSP will be greater than the amount saved by paying down the mortgage. This decision needs to be shaped by a long-term view, looking at both interest rates and investment returns. Other debt – if you have high-interest debt such as credit card balances, it usually makes sense to pay that off before focusing on your mortgage or RRSP.

Your age – remember that contributions to an RRSP at an early age can make a big difference in helping you reach your long-term financial goals. The earlier you get money into a retirement plan, the longer it will have to grow in a taxdeferred manner. Other retirement income – if you have a workplace pension that will help finance retirement, or other sources of future income, it may make more sense to pay down the mortgage. Once the mortgage is paid off, you can concentrate on your RRSP. Missed RRSP contribu-

5022-49 Street, Camrose Phone 780-672-0155 tions – RRSP rules allow you to make up for missed contributions. If you have unused contribution room from past years, that’s another consideration to take into account. Again, you’ll need to assess whether the returns after making up for those missed contributions will be greater than the amount saved by paying down the mortgage. Also remember that the mortgage-versus-RRSP decision does not have to be

“either-or.” The best scenario for many people is contributing to an RRSP as well as paying down the mortgage. For example, you could make your RRSP contribution each year, and then pay down a portion of the mortgage principal using

the tax refund generated by

your RRSP contribution. Consult with your financial advisor to help you weigh your options and choose a course of action that makes the most sense for you.

Camrosians are sure to be rubbing their eyes in disbelief when Outerbridge – Clockwork Mysteries comes to the Bailey Theatre stage Feb. 13. A professionally orchestrated theatrical production written and directed by Ted and Marion Outerbridge, Clockwork Mysteries invites audiences to become part of a race through time, experience time accelerating and slowing down, and participate in predicting the contents of a time capsule. “Everyone wishes they could travel through time, go back and change the past,” said Ted in an interview with the Ottawa Citizen. “Slow time down, speed time up, savour a beautiful moment, get through a boring situation. So the time machine makes all this possible.” Clockwork Mysteries uses over 20 custom-designed illusions and world-class lighting and set designs. The main set piece is a 14-foot diameter clock face based on a clock that is on display at the Orsay Museum in France. The idea is that the audience is transported into a clock tower, and the environment is both immersive and open, with plenty of space for dramatic illusions and celebrations. “The majority of props are designed to look like real-life objects that we can relate to,” states a Clockwork Mysteries package, “but an exception was made for the alarm clock. An everyday object that is dramatically out of proportion helps to enhance the dream-like feeling.” Illusions in the show include the classical sawing of Marion in half, a levitation, and the disappearance of Ted. The time capsule will reveal the correct answers posed to audience members about such things as their favourite band and favourite activity. Continued on page 19

Clockwork Mysteries’ illusions are based on existing concepts that you can find on YouTube. “We present them in an original way,” said Ted, “so it’s a little bit more difficult to recognize some of the methods.” Ted and Marion Outerbridge have been hailed by the Montreal Gazette as “the most successful musicians in Canada,” and as “champions of magic” by Bergendorfer Zeitung, Hamburg, Germany. Their show has received both the 2011 Award of Excellence from Ontario Contact, and the 2010 Touring Artist of the Year from the B.C. Touring Council. Ted’s magical obsession began very early in life and by age 12 he was performing at neighbourhood birthday parties for $5 a show. At 18 he made his international debut – and front page headlines – with performances in Bermuda. He has done everything from materializing Fortune 500 executives to consulting for the Cirque de Soleil, to creating the magic for the movie Switching Channels starring Kathleen Turner and Christopher Reeve. He has made over 100 television appearances, from Much Music to The Discovery Channel’s Mystery Hunters, and his own TV special, Magic with Ted Outerbridge. He has lectured on the art of magic, magic business and illusion design to audiences as diverse as magicians, theatre professionals and business executives. Marion joined the Ted Outerbridge Musician Extraordinaire show as a dancer and lead assistant in 1999, and quickly became an integral part of the show. “The chemistry between Marion and Ted is phenomenal,” states the press package, “and it’s clear that they are having the time of their lives in their performances of signature illusions.” A professionally-trained dancer, Marion has performed in numerous North American productions, from Nostalgie to We’ve Got Magic and Country 2000. In 2000 she made her film debut in The Whole Nine Yards with Bruce Willis, and has since appeared in numerous film and television productions, including Barney’s Version with Dustin Hoffman and White House Down with Maggie Gyllenhaal and Jamie Foxx. Outerbridge – Clockwork Mysteries is being hosted by the Camrose Arts Society. Tickets for the 7 p.m. show are available from the Bailey box office or online at www. baileytheatre.com.

Canadian Tire makes presentation to CPAC By Dan Jensen

Dave Jewell celebrated his 11th anniversary as owner of Canadian Tire in Camrose by presenting a cheque for $50,000 to the performing arts centre. The money will be spread out over five years. “This is a donation both from my wife and I and the store,” explained Dave before making the presentation to Augustana dean Dr. Allen Berger and Camrose mayor Norm Mayer Jan. 17. The Jewels are hoping that the performing arts centre will benefit children in the community in the same way that two of their children benefitted from the Horizon Stage in Spruce Grove. “It (Horizon Centre) gave (our children) the opportunity to explore that side of their education,” said Marilyn Jewell, who works in the field of medicine. The Horizon Centre is well-used by numerous groups and individuals, including professional performers and students in elementary, junior high and high school. “The students who use it receive a well-rounded education in the arts,” said Marilyn. Dave feels that supporting the performing arts centre a responsibility he has as a businessman who has benefitted from the community’s support. “Part of being a good corporate citizen is ensuring a legacy is left for our employees and our customers who are important to us,” said

Dave and Marilyn Jewell, owners of Canadian Tire in Camrose, present a cheque for $50,000 to Augustana dean Dr. Allen Berger (left) and Camrose mayor Norm Mayer (right).

Dave. “We have given to the sporting groups in the past and now it is time to expand on that. The performing arts centre is not just about drama and performances. It is about culture and part of what we need as a community to be well-rounded.” Dave said he has wanted to do something with the performing arts centre for some time. “Ever since we got the announcement we have been thinking about it,” he said.

“Again we reflected back on the education our children received in Spruce Grove. We went to several high school productions and our children have a lot of friends who have moved on to do drama. I thought if Spruce Grove can have it why can’t Camrose? We have the means now to be able to make a donation.” The donation gives Canadian Tire the right to have its name attached to the performing arts centre’s outside balcony.

“We thought it was a good opportunity to be part of that,” said Jewell. The Camrose Performing Arts Centre is a joint project of the Government of Alberta, the City of Camrose, Camrose County and the University of Alberta. The City of Camrose is contributing $4.5 million in funding from the municipal sustainability initiative program and will debenture an additional $4 million. In addition, the City is front-

ending $4.25 million to be repaid by the current fundraising campaign. The University of Alberta contribution is $5.05 million, including in-kind contributions of $4.3 million, while Camrose County and the Province of Alberta contributions total $1 million and $3.5 million respectively. A soft opening has been planned for this summer, to be followed by the grand gala opening in early October.

Francoeur new president of Bailey Theatre Society By Dan Jensen

The Bailey Theatre Society elected David Francoeur to the position of president at its annual general meeting Jan. 28. Kim Hann was elected vice president, while David Roth was elected secretary treasurer. Francoeur said he is excited about the upcoming year. “We have concerns going forward but I prefer to be an optimist. The members of our board have brand new attitudes and Peter North, who we have hired as program manager will be able to bring so much to the table to assist us with our operations.” Francoeur said the Bailey Theatre Society is intent on increasing the amount of fundraising that is being done in Camrose in support of the theatre. “We raised $127,000 last year and our aim is to do even more in 2014. We are focused on getting as close to the black line as possible.” Francoeur is hopeful that the City of Camrose will be able to free up money from the MacInnis Family Foundation for operating

expenses by guaranteeing the loan the Society holds with the Battle River Credit Union. “We have a mortgage to deal with, which is why we are asking for short term assistance from the City so we can fund long term solutions,” said Francoeur. “It is important to realize that there isn’t a single theatre that is able to operate without some kind of assistance from the municipality it is in.” Francoeur noted that the Bailey Theatre Society is a non profit society made up of members of the community, retirees and professional business people, all of whom are dedicated to seeing the Bailey Theatre become a hub of arts and culture in Camrose. “We are not a private society and we are not in competition with the Camrose Performing Arts Centre,” he said. “I think we dovetail with the performing arts centre, which is a totally different venue. I don’t want the people of Camrose to think it is either one or the other. (Augustana Faculty dean) Allen Berger is very supportive of us and we want to work hand in hand

with CPAC. Our programmer (North) and the CPAC manager have already had discussions and developed a great working relationship.” Francoeur said it is important to him that the Bailey Theatre not become a political issue in Camrose.

David Francoeur

“It is vital to the downtown economy and it is a historic cultural venue. It has been for the last 100 years. We believe most Camrosians see it as an integral part of Camrose.” Francoeur said the Bailey Theatre has received generous support from the

Camrose business community. “When we had our gala fundraising event almost every downtown business gave something to support us. We thought that was pretty impressive considering the fact that most businesses are approached at least 10 times a year with some kind of request for assistance. It showed us that they believe it is important to have the Bailey Theatre on the north block.” Francoeur said the initial goal of the Bailey Theatre Society was to renovate an old theatre for Camrose and area, and that operating the theatre was never its main aim. He added that while membership fees are something that the Society has considered, it (the Society) does not want to become an exclusive club where members pay fees in the hundreds of dollars. “We want the community to be on board with us and see that it has an important role to play.” Francoeur agrees with City councillors who suggest the need for an umbrella organization that will oversee the operations of all the

arts facilities in Camrose to ensure that there is no duplication of events. “It would be in the best interests of everyone if there was an arts coordinator,” he said. “We don’t want to be in a situation, for example, where there are two country shows that are happening on the same night.” Bailey Theatre Society past president Judy McLean expressed the belief at the annual meeting that 2014 is going to be a banner year. “Our dialogue with the City of Camrose continues,” said McLean. “And, as we look forward to the opening of CPAC we have already begun a collaboration process to make arts and culture a vibrant and thriving reality for the citizens of Camrose and surrounding area.” Peter North told Society members in his program manager’s report that he has had meetings with the Camrose Country Opry and the Bailey Buckaroo fellows about rental agreements, as well as with Brenda O’Donnell, from the Touring Alliance, who offered a great deal of insight into avenues for the theatre. Legislature Report Doug Griffiths, MLA, Battle River-Wainwright Albertans invited to comment on Health Charter and Health Advocate regulation

You are encouraged to provide your input into Alberta’s draft Health Charter that will outline what Albertans can expect from our health system and the values you want reflected in our system, now and in the future. A 30-day comment period is currently underway on the draft Health Charter and a proposed Health Advocate regulation. View the draft documents and provide your comments until March 3 by visiting www.health. alberta.ca. Your input will be important as the Health Charter and Health Advocate regulation are finalized. The Health Charter will outline what Albertans can expect from the health system and their personal responsibilities when interacting with the system. The proposed regulation includes duties and authorities of the Health Advocate, requirements for complaint reviews, and rules for how reviews can be conducted. Both the Charter and the Health Advocate regulation are part of the Alberta Health Act, which came into force on Jan. 1. The Act sets out clear principles to guide decision-making in the health system and reinforces the government’s commitment to the principles of the Canada Health Act. When it opens this spring, the Office of the Health Advocate will be home to the Health Advocate, a Seniors’ Advocate and the Mental Health Patient Advocate. As the MLA for Battle River - Wainwright, I am always available to assist constituents. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the Health Charter and Health Advocate or any other matter I can be reached in my constituency office at 780-842-6177. Also, please subscribe to my e‑newsletter at http://Griffiths.mypcmla. ca/.

North also noted the Bailey has booked a handful of shows for down the road, including MonkeyJunk, Tim Hus and Lynne Miles. “We will be booking a few more shows by the end of the week, one being a tribute to the Eagles and another featuring Chloe Albert, whose latest record was the number one record on CKUA in 2013,” said North. “We have also been able to negotiate very good deals with all of these acts.”

Doris Irene Butler September 17 1923 – January 26, 2014 Doris Irene Butler was born on September 17, 1923 in Hanna and passed away on January 26, 2014. For the first 10 years of her life, she lived east of Pollockville. In 1933, they moved to the Dorenlee area, and in 1940, they moved to the farm at New Norway. On December 9, 1945, she married Art Butler and lived on the Butler farm until 1978 when she moved to New Norway to live with her mother when she wasn’t working at Bashaw Valley Lodge. Doris’s family was very important to her. She could always be seen at functions in which her grandchildren participated. She never missed a 4-H show, violin lesson or a sports event in which they were involved. She also never missed having birthday and Christmas gifts for all her young nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She loved babies. She was excited to be a great-grandma. Doris was the most unselfish person. She touched many people’s lives and was always ready to lend a hand where needed and to offer kind words of encouragement. Visiting at the hospital was something she did regularly until she couldn’t drive anymore. Doris was a great letter writer and kept in touch with many nieces and nephews, as well as cousins from overseas. She was a lifetime member of New Norway Community Club. God was a very important part of her life. She was a member of the United Church and a delegate to Presbytery for many years. If, for some reason, there was no service at the United Church, she would just go to another one. Doris leaves to cherish her memory one son Bruce (Karen); grandchildren Kelly (Mike), Jodi (Dylan) and Randy; greatgrandson Kale; her brother Victor (Madeline); and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews. Doris was predeceased by her husband Art and son Harold. A Funeral Service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, February 3, 2014 from Camrose United Church with Mary Ann Pastuck officiating. Inurnment has taken place in New Norway Cemetery. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to New Norway Zion United Church, or to New Norway Hall Board. Virtual Trek doing tour of Newfoundland By Murray Green

The Camrose Primary Care Network’s popular virtual trek is back to get you excited about becoming healthier. If you haven’t toured Newfoundland, this is a great way to get to know the Maritime province a little better. The 2014 edition of the virtual trek travels through the beautiful province of Newfoundland, touring through historic landmarks and towns along the way to celebrate your personal success towards the finish in Corner Brook. The trek has changed to a 60 day trek, shorter than previous routes. The PCN Newfoundland trek covers 455 km and approximately 600,000 steps in total. “With an average of 10,000 steps per day, most people should have no problem completing it. You are encouraged to try different activities, as well as walking to get your steps in,” said PCN communications lead Colleen Lindholm. It’s important to keep up an active lifestyle throughout the winter months. Keeping active not only keeps you physically fit, it’s good for your mental wellbeing and overall health. “If you haven’t participated before – the virtual trek is a fun and unique fitness challenge that uses an on-line program to keep track of your physical fitness activities and then turns them into steps. The

Jolene Johnsen of the Augustana Fitness Centre and Colleen Lindholm of the Camrose PCN plan on Goin’ For A Jaunt across Newfoundland in the annual virtual trek.

program can calculate all types of activities such as swimming, biking, basketball into steps so all fitness activities count, even snow shoveling,” said Colleen. “Participation is easy and totally free and you can win great prizes along the way.

You can join individually, or get together with friends, family or your co-workers as a team. This is a challenge for all ages.” The PCN ran the Iditarod Race Virtual Trek in 2013 with over 520 people registering in the program

– logging over 220 million steps. To get started visit www.camrosepcn.com and register by clicking on the Goin’ for a Jaunt link. (If you are joining as a team, call 780-608-4940 for more information). Registrations

will be taken any time after Feb. 10 and steps towards the trek will begin Feb. 18. You can register anytime during the trek, which ends on April 18. The first 50 registered participants receive a free PCN t-shirt to wear while participating in trek activities. Start your week with a jaunt. Every Monday at lunch time (12:15 p.m.) during the duration of the trek, you can join the Camrose PCN staff for a 45 minute walk around the track at the Camrose Recreation Centre (EnCana Arena). Start keeping track of all your fitness activities and log on regularly to enter your activity and steps. “Once again, a key partner in this year’s trek is the Augustana Fitness Center. They will be providing the grand prize of a one year membership, as well as keeping track of our trek participants,” added Colleen. Every participant who finishes the trek by April 18 will be entered into the draw for the membership. The Fitness Center is offering a special three month membership for virtual trek participants. This offer is only available Feb. 18 to 25 for people that have registered for the virtual trek. This is valid for new memberships only. The kickoff for the trek will be held outside at the Recreation Center at noon, Tuesday, February 18.

Doubles Provincials held at Rose City Curling Club By Murray Green

For the second straight year the Rose City Curling Club was asked to host the Alberta Mixed Doubles Provincials. The mixed doubles will have 25 teams battling for the right to represent the province in Ottawa. Camrose and area has three teams entered in the event. The sister and brother team of Lisa and Neil Bratrud, Brenda Bohmer and Don Miller, and Whitney Eckstrand and Adam Enright will be the ones you will want to watch. “Since we are hosting, we decided to enter. This will be my first time playing in doubles. We have five rocks. One curler throws the first and last rock and the other throws the middle three,” explained Neil, who is also on the RCCC board. “It’s completely different. You can throw your rock and then go sweep. It is an endurance test. There are a lot of young curlers entered, so it is exciting for the future.” Adam and Whitney had some success last year. “I watched them and it is fun to see. It may not be

as fun on the ice,” joked Neil. “I’m curling with my sister and we are going to calm about it because we have curled together before.”

The playing field will be fairly even. “We are going to play a couple of games with Brenda and Don prior to the event to

get used to it,” said Neil. “It’s looks fun and since we are hosting, we wanted to try it different. It will be good for the club, the event is growing.”

Neil said Canada is a step behind in mixed curling. “In order to keep the curling strong we need it to be a social event with mixed curlers,” he added. “In an Olympic Games year with strong competition, it is good to host an event like this.” The competition will begin on Friday, Feb. 14 at 8:30 p.m. and will conclude with the championship playoffs on Monday, Feb. 17. The winning team will have the option of representing Alberta at the Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Trials that will occur at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club March 19 to 23. They will receive Team Alberta jackets, Alberta Rose crests, shirts, $700 in expense subsidy and have the $400 entry fee paid for them. The team winning the Canadian Mixed Doubles in Ottawa will represent Canada at the World Mixed Doubles in Dumfries, Scotland. The world competition will take place April 23 to 30. For more information or for a complete draw stop by the Rose City Curling Club in the afternoon or evening.

2014 Yukon Denali Refinement, performance, ingenuity

Pete Pastuck By Dan Jensen

You’ll be looking at everything else with a different eye after driving the 2014 GMC Yukon Denali at McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC. Yukon Denali combines refinement, performance and ingenuity in a way that will exceed all your expectations. As McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC sales manager Dennis Polei said, it is luxury in all its forms. Appearance

All Denali models feature standard 20-inch eightspoke chrome-finished cast aluminum wheels. Their lustrous finish complements the other chrome accents, like the distinctive honeycomb chrome grille, and chromeaccented bodyside moulding. Heated power-retractable mirrors remove snow, frost and fogging, and feature integrated turn indicators that signal your intentions to other drivers. The driverside mirror dims automatically to deflect glares away from your line of sight. Both mirrors fold back for extra clearance in close parking situations or to help prevent

damage in automatic car washes. The power liftgate opens with the touch of your key fob for easier access to your Yukon’s impressive cargo capacity. You can close it the same way, or use the switch located on the tailgate itself or on the overhead centre console. Side blind zone alert encompasses alternating radar beams, which sweep a zone approximately one lane over from each side of the Denali. An amber icon in the outside rearview mirror lights if a vehicle is in the blind spot and flashes if you activate the turn signal. Lets get comfortable

From the moment you open its doors, Yukon Denali allows you to take on the world with uncompromising comfort and style. You can seat up to eight passengers thanks to two front buckets, second-row captain’s chairs, and a 60/40 three passenger bench seat. The leather-appointed front bucket seats feature 12-way power controls, including lumbar control, heated and cooled seat cushions and seatbacks, two-position memory, adjustable head restraints. Adjustable pedals help

drivers of varying sizes sit at a comfortable distance from the steering wheel. The pedals have a memory feature that automatically recognizes your key fob and moves them back to your desired settings. The steering wheel has a built-in heating system which warms the rim to give you gloves-off comfort, even on the coldest days. Steering-wheel-mounted radio controls let you control your audio system with your fingertips as you keep your hands on the wheel. These controls adjust the radio band, channel selection, volume and muting, as well as manage the functions of your hands-free phone service through OnStar (standard for six months). Tri-zone climate control create individual areas for the driver, front-seat passenger and rear-compartment passengers. Second-row passengers get their own controls for temperature and fan speed so drivers can concentrate on the road. Performance

The Vortec 6.2 litre V8 on the Denali provides 403 horsepower at 5700 rpm and 417 lb.-ft. of torque at

4300 rpm. Matched with a six-speed automatic transmission that has been engineered for control and confidence in a wide variety of situations, it has a fuel consumption rating of 15.3 litres per 100 km in the city and 10.0 litres per 100 km on the highway. Active Fuel Management (AFM) provides maximum fuel efficiency when your load is light and maximum V8 power when it isn’t. AFM senses load and demand, then seamlessly activates or de-activates four of the engine’s eight cylinders, using specifically designed hydraulic valve lifters. Automatic Grade Braking automatically senses when you want to slow your Yukon, and when conditions are met, engages a shift schedule that helps maintain your desired speed. Driver shift control lets you manually move through gear ranges. Move the shift lever to M and you get fingertip tap up/down control of the transmission gear range selection. Variable Valve Timing (VVT) gives you maximum power over the widest range of engine speeds. VVT changes the engine’s

performance profile to match the driving situation. In the city, VVT gives you a smooth idle and quick response at low speeds. On the highway, VVT changes your engine to a bold, high-performance V8 with horsepower to spare. Strong frame

Yukon’s strong frame and rigid body structure keep road harshness out while preserving responsiveness. All-Wheel Drive, standard on Denali, transfers power to all four wheels all the time. It’s always activated so you don’t have to fuss with controls to enjoy the benefits of improved traction. The StabiliTrak Stability Control System helps you stay on the path you’re steering in bad weather or on uneven roads. It senses when Yukon is not responding to steering inputs, then adjusts engine speed and braking pressure at any individual wheel to help maintain directional control. See the 2014 GMC Yukon Denali at McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC at 3850-48 Avenue, Camrose. Phone 780-672-2355 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

Brothers start skateboard business By Murray Green

Nick and Alex Kroeger encourage safe skateboarding.

Detour Longboard Maintenance is not your average business. Launched by Alex and Nick Kroeger in the basement of their parent’s home in Victoria Park (5908-55 Avenue), it is one that caters to ordering hard to find skateboards and parts. “The nearest place to buy anything is in Edmonton. We order online and bring in the

boards to Camrose. Our business has really taken off since November,” said 15-year-old Grade 10 OLMP student Alex. The brothers have several boards in stock, but they also make special orders. “I clean and maintain boards, fix cracks and paint them. I teach skateboarders how to put on grip tape and maintain the boards,” said Alex. “In the spring I want to

set up a clinic to teach people how to do these things.” Since the business opened the brothers have sold 25 boards. The low overhead of operating out of their basement has allowed them to keep the costs down. “Two years ago I started skateboarding and I enjoyed and it evolved into a business,” said Alex. THE ADVANTAGES OF SYNTHETIC MOTOR OIL. T:7.5”

In extremely cold weather, synthetic oil is simply better. Originally engineered for military applications, the controlled chemistry and purity of synthetic oil means that it protects your engine the best, when you need it most. Even at incredibly low temperatures, synthetic oil remains viscous, allowing it to immediately flow to and protect the critical components of your engine during the harshness of those cold weather starts. Ask your service advisor about upgrading to Pennzoil® synthetic oil motor oil today...

Oil & Filter Change Changing your vehicle’s oil and filter at regular intervals isn’t just a good idea – it’s a vital part of keeping your vehicle’s engine running properly. Engine oil protects your engine’s moving parts against wear and corrosion; but even the highest quality oils break down over time. Filters too have a limited life expectancy and once fully obstructed they lose their ability to filter contaminants from your engine oil. This combination of degraded, contaminated engine oil and an obstructed filter can directly damage the very components they were originally engineered to protect.

Boosting a battery is more dangerous than many of us realize. Being stuck in a parking lot with a dead battery when it’s 30 below is no Date: 1-21-2014 8:25 AM laughing matter; neither is Artist: OPTIC PREPRESS damaging your vehicle from a shoddy boosting job. In most cases, a simple CYAN, BLACK boost will get the engine back up and running. But it’s important to remember that this can be a dangerous task. In fact, there is a specific method that should always be used when proceeding with this operation. Consult your owner’s manual; it will outline all the steps you should follow. Any car expert will tell you that booster cables should be of high quality and in excellent condition. A damaged cable can cause injury or damage to both vehicles. Also keep in mind that poorly connected cables can cause batteries to explode. Finally, should you find yourself needing more than one boost this winter, have the battery and charging system checked. If your technician recommends that you replace the battery, take his advice very seriously.

Vikings tame Huskies to stay in the hunt By Murray Green

Adam Johnson of the Augustana Vikings scored with 24 seconds left in regulation to tie the MacEwan Griffins 3-3 and force overtime. However, the extra frame didn’t solve the deadlock. MacEwan started the game strong, which had the Vikings in comeback mode for most of the contest. Craig Cornelsen and Brad Bourke also scored for the Vikings. Goalie Andy Williams held Augustana in the game until they could get the offence rolling. He stopped 32 of 35 shots, while Augustana had 24 shots. The Vikings defeated the Keyano Huskies 7-2 and 6-2 during a weekend series in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference play Jan. 24 and 25. Augustana built up a 4-1 lead after the opening 20 minutes and went on to win 7-2 in the first match. Dane Bonish led the charge with two goals, his 14th and 15th of the year, while Jeremy Beirnes and Kenny Bradley also garnered tallies in the first. In the second frame, Devon Hobbs and Cornelsen added to the lead. Defenceman Bourke supplied the marker in the last period. Goalie Joel Danyluk stopped 40 of 42 shots, including 19 in the second period. Augustana was a dominant force in the second outing. Scott Aucion and Bradley both notched their ninth of the season in the first period. Johnson, Harrison Tribble, Boyd Wakelin and Bourke chipped in with single markers in the last two frames. Vikings goalie Williams turned away 27 of 29 shots directed his way. Augustana hosts NAIT on Feb. 5 and Portage on Feb. 22 and closes out the regular season against Concordia on March 1. Basketball

The women’s basketball Vikings continued to hold onto first place in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference standings with a four point weekend. Augustana beat Grande Prairie 70-58 with a 29-10 fourth quarter. Kari Kubinec

Pro Sports Photography

Kenny Bradley of the Augustana Vikings and several of the MacEwan Griffins can’t find the loose puck in a ACAC hockey game on Jan. 29. The teams settled for a 3-3 overtime tie.

led the Vikings in scoring with 22 points and Kelsey Lund chipped in with 16 points. Kelsey took control of the second game and scored 33 points to lead her squad to an 86-66 victory. Kari Kubinec added 16 in support. On the men’s side, the Vikings dropped a hard fought 86-85 contest and then a 73-66 game to place them tied for the last playoff spot. Lee Danderfer scored 17 and Aikens Cole sank 16 points in the first game. Aikens netted 20 and Tony Nguyen collected 17 points in support in the second outing.

Augustana is at home against Lakeland on Feb. 7 and finish the regular season on Feb. 15 with Grant MacEwan in our city. Volleyball

The women’s volleyball team is also tied for the last playoff spot. Losing 3-1 and 3-0 to Grande Prairie didn’t help the drive to secure a place in the second season. Keira Lotoski led the team with nine kills, while Keri Alcorn grabbed 14 digs on the first night. Keri recorded 11 kills and 11 digs in the second match. The men’s team won both

matches to improve to 8-6 on the season. Augustana won 3-1 in the first match with scores of 25-18, 29-27, 24-26 and 25-16. Luke Ryan led the Vikings with 15 kills and 15 digs in the first match played in Grande Prairie. He collected 12 kills in the rematch, while Nazheef Ganji led with 11 digs. Augustana closes out the regular season with the Kings Eagles here on Feb. 8. The games begin at 6 for the women and 8 p.m. for the men except on Feb. 1 when the games start at 1 and 3 p.m.

Camrose Kodiaks maul Calgary Canucks By Murray Green

The Camrose Kodiaks clawed and scratched their way to a 6-0 lead before the Calgary Canucks knew the bears were angry on Jan. 25. The Canucks scored on a power play, but didn’t put up much of a fight in the 7-1 game. Camrose pelted the Canucks with rubber as they out shot Calgary 52-24. Goalie Adin Hall must have been in the coaches’ bad books because he wasn’t allowed to leave the net during the barrage. The Kodiaks spread the offence around with seven different players collecting one goal each. Nelson Gadoury, Connor Mailey, Tanner Mac-

Master, Luc Lemire, Cam Gotaas, Jody Sick and Scott Ferguson earned the tallies. The power play clicked on three of six chances for the bears. Goalie Devin McDonald stopped 23 of 24 shots that he faced. Brooks defeated the Kodiaks 4-1 the previous evening. Although Camrose played well at times, the effort didn’t show up on the scoresheet. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

CAMROSE COUNTY RESIDENTS DRIVEWAY PLOWING SAFETY Bylaw #1141 Camrose County prides itself in providing a safe passageway for its ratepayers and the travelling public at large. By not adhering to this bylaw you not only place the County in danger, but your equipment and operators, neighbours and their families. Windrows, ridges and stockpiles of snow refreezes when pushed across the County roads which makes them hazardous to the graders and wings in their effort to push them out of harms’ way. Potential damage to wings or vehicles may occur should they collide with these deposits of snow. Please refrain from this activity. If in violation, Protective Service Officers have been instructed to ticket violations of Bylaw #1141.

Board shop launched by young business people Continued from page 27 The goal is to get more riders involved in the sport. “We are thinking about have some competitions in Camrose, because the closest ones are in Edmonton and they tend to be for professional riders,” added Alex. “We want to have some that anybody can enter and have fun at. We could have races along trail systems and tricks at the skateboard park.” Different boards are used for various events. “We have longboards for roads that are used for travel and shorter boards for tricks,” explained Alex. The business also sells accessories such as t-shirts and stickers. “We have sold some t-shirts and that part of it is picking up as well,” said Alex. Nick handles the inventory and the apparel. “We like working together,” said 12-year-old OLMP Grade 7 student Nick, who envisions taking over when Alex leaves high school. The biggest benefit of the business had been the connection with other youth. “Skateboarding gives youth something positive to do. They have gathering nights to learn and get together to improve their skills,” said mom Teresa Kroeger. “It doesn’t matter if it is a girl or boy, or what age you are. It is a demanding sport to learn and they want to put on clinics to help everyone learn, including safety. It’s positive esteem building and physical activity. It’s why my husband and I decided to back them and let them use our basement.” Safety is a concern to the brothers. “If the sport grows it is important to learn how to ride. They use the same road as bicycles and they need to learn how to stop and be safe,” said Alex. For more information on upcoming scheduled club events visit Facebook at Detour Longboard Maintenance or call 780-679-5505.
