Mayor, councillors take oath of office

Camrose lawyer Larry Johnson administered the oath of office to Norm Mayer Agnes Hoveland, Kevin Hycha, Max Lindstrand, Ray McIsaac, Bill Sears, P. J. Stasko, Wayne Throndson and Greg Wood at the organizational meeting of Camrose City council Oct. 30.

The organizational meeting of council must be held within 10 days of the election being held.

As per the Local Authorities Election Act, the official election results were released prior to the noon deadline on Oct. 25.

Meeting dates

Council will hold its regular meetings the first and third Monday of the month in Camrose County council chambers starting at 5 p.m.

In the event that the Monday falls on a statutory holiday, the meeting will be held for the Tuesday following the meeting.

Administration recommended that no committee of the whole meetings be scheduled until council has had the opportunity to review the new committee structure.

If the deputy mayor is not available, the councillor next in the rotation assumes his or her duties.

Kevin and Ally Gurr true Community Builders

Battle River Community Foundation paid tribute to Kevin and Ally Gurr at its Community Builders' dinner October 26 for all they have to make Camrose a better place in which to live.

"It is apparent from the capacity crowd gathered here this evening that Ally and Kevin are well respected for their contributions and achievements," said BRCF board chair Blain Fowler.

"We are indeed fortunate that they chose to locate in Camrose and raise their family here. For almost thirty years, the Gurrs have helped to make Camrose a much better place in which to live. Just like the Battle River Community Foundation, they have consistently demonstrated characteristics of caring and compassion, and put a priority on meeting the needs of others."

Fowler said the Gurrs' outstanding record of community service has been delivered without any fanfare or seeking recognition of any kind.

"They have served unselfishly because they thought it was the right thing to do."

The Gurrs have no doubt they made the right choice in locating in Camrose.

"I couldn't think of a better community in which to raise our kids and do business," said Kevin. "We are so glad the pizza business landed us here."

Endowments growing

The Battle River Community Foundation has accumulated endowments totalling more than $7.5 million since its inception in 1995.

"Even in these difficult times, giving to our Foundation still remains a high priority in the hearts and minds of the citizens of Camrose and all those who reside in the Battle River Watershed," said Battle River Community Foundation board chair Blain Fowler.

The amount of grants that has been handed out to worthwhile projects and initiatives in the communities the Battle River Community Foundation serves is $2,051,792.

"This is a tremendous achievement, only made possible through the generosity of all of you," said Fowler. "This proves to me once again that we live in the very best part of the best province in the best country in the world."

Kevin and Ally Gurr were honoured at the BRCF Community Builders' dinner Oct. 26.

years ago when they were approached by then board member Tom Kuntz about leaving a legacy fund that would endure in their names and continue to help the community long after they were gone.

"We immediately saw the benefits of contributing," said Kevin. "The Kevin and Ally Gurr fund was founded to help children and adults with special needs. The fund is growing, with your support here today, and will help us make a bigger impact in the years to come."

After taking business courses at the University of

Calgary, Kevin was part of the ownership team of a Boston Pizza in Leduc prior to taking on the Camrose Boston Pizza franchise in 1986.

Right from the beginning, he and his wife, Ally, who joined Kevin in Camrose after their marriage in 1987, became active members, most particularly in the Camrose Kinsmen and Kinette clubs.

"Ally organized a successful community fashion show featuring the designs of Canadian icon Brian Bailey, with proceeds going to the Make A Wish Foundation," explained a profile on the Gurrs in the Battle

River Community Foundation's September newsletter.

"She has also had a number of positions on the board of the Camrose Academy of Dance over more than a decade of involvement. Kevin has been active in the Sport Development Society since it was formed in 1996 and the Gurrs have, at various times, billeted members of the Camrose Kodiaks hockey team."

Kevin has been instrumental in helping Camrose attract large sporting events, including the World Jr. A Hockey Challenge, the RBC Cup and the Tour of Alber-

ta. He has also served more than a decade with Centra Cam Vocational Training Association, an organization which offers programs, services and employment opportunities for adults with special needs.

"It's great to see where that organization is now," said Kevin in the newsletter. "I was part of the team that worked to expand the Centra Cam site and build the Emergency Clothing and Furniture Depot. It has been a strong board and phenomenal staff who have worked together to get things done.

Working with the clients is always fun, too."

Kevin and Ally expressed their appreciation in the newsletter for the support given to their family in managing the needs of their son, Jonathan, age 23, who has Prader-Willi syndrome.

"From sports teams to schools, Jonathan has always had caring people around them who have gone that extra mile for him," they said. "His experience growing up here has been great."

The Gurrs celebrated the Community Builders' dinner by transferring a $100,000 life insurance policy to the Battle River Community Foundation in the name of their fund and by making a $25,000 commitment to the Foundation for a flowthrough grant to the performing arts centre, which is currently under construction.

It is not unusual for clients to flock around Kevin, giving him high fives and joking with him endlessly. He has become part of the Centra Cam family to many of them

Remembrance Day Monday, November 11 The Camrose Branch No. 57 of the Royal Canadian Legion will be conducting their annual Wreath and Poppy campaign. Monies realized during this campaign, after expenses (purchase of wreaths, poppies, etc.), are donated back into the community by assisting veterans or their dependents in financial or medical situations.

Donations are made annually to various charities in and around Camrose as the need arises. Annual bursaries are also given to students (veteran related) needing assistance in furthering their education.

The sale of wreaths and poppies will commence October 21, 2013 and POPPY TAG DAY will be held on November 9, 2013.

The annual Remembrance Day Services and the laying of wreaths will be held at the Camrose Regional Exhibition starting shortly before 11:00 a.m. Members of the general public are encouraged to attend. Fatal collision on Highway 21 Oct. 31 Submitted

On October 31, at approximately 7:30 a.m., Camrose RCMP were dispatched to a serious motor vehicle collision on Highway 21, approximately eight km south of Highway 13. A south-bound SUV lost control on an icy patch of roadway and collided with a northbound pick up truck.

The 64-year-old female driver of the SUV was pronounced dead on scene. The 34-year-old male driver of the pick up truck was transported by ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose, where he was treated and released. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors.

Highway 21 was closed for approximately three hours.

Highway services attended the location and sanded the icy roadway.

Lamb Ford receives Business Excellence Award

The Camrose Chamber of Commerce presented a 2013 Business Excellence Award to Lamb Ford Sales at its Small Business Week banquet Oct. 23.

Lamb Ford Sales is a full service automotive dealership, offering everything from new and used vehicles to collision repairs. The business received the Diamond Club Award – Ford’s highest honour – in 2011, and established itself as one

of the top 100 Ford dealerships in Canada in 2012.

Notice board to be installed at Pelican Point

Camrose County council approved the installation of a notice board in Pelican Point at its regular meeting Oct. 29.

It will be located adjacent to the eastern edge of the overf low parking area, along Pelican Drive on County land.

Sign materials and constr uction will be at the expense of the Pelican Point Community A ssociation.

Ca mrose County will supply and install two support posts.

The Pelican Point Community Association will need to obtain an appropriate development permit at its own expense.

The community notice board is for people to advertise local events.

"The board will be operated and maintained by the committee," said County assistant administrator Paul King, when questioned by councillor Trevor Miller.

The board will be located and constructed so it is not a hazard to people, property or traffic. The committee wants to install the sign prior to the long weekend next May.

Case for Justice

I would like to call your attention to the predicament facing a young Camrose family. Justice, the eldest daughter of Justin and April Wollman, was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor on August 20, 2013. She is only eight years old.

Justice is undergoing chemotherapy treatments at the Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton Alberta.

She will have chemo treatments every three weeks until the end of December.

Then she will be sent to Jacksonville Florida for eight weeks to receive a special type of radiation treatment that is not offered in Canada.

I have known Justin and April since Justin came to work for me over ten years ago. They are a wonderful team. I have watched their family grow and now I am watching them face down this dread disease with fortitude and hope.

April, Justin and their two younger children will accompany Justice to Jacksonville for her radiation treatment. Although the treatment is fully covered

by Alberta Health, there are additional expenses for the family. A trust account has been established for Justice at the TD Bank in Camrose,

branch number 8184, and account number 6339060. I encourage you to help Justice and her family in their time of trouble.

I do realize that the election has happened around two weeks ago. I have been quite busy with writing, and my two jobs. Well, my writing letters to the paper had to take a back burner to the other three things which have been happening in my life.

I was quite pleased with the majority of the results. I will say that I was not surprised that Norman Mayer was elected as our mayor.

He has been in politics for many years and I am sure he will do an excellent job. I must confess that I did not vote for Norman Mayer. I did vote for Mike. I thought that this city needed a change from the usual type of mayors who they usually voted in. Like usual, my vote was in the minority. The majority of the voters showed all of us that they were very satisfied with Mr. Mayer.

One voter voted for Norman not because of his policies. She voted for him because she thought it would be cool to have a mayor whose name is Mayer. I am not sure if I am the only person who knows this. Norman used to be our mayor in years past.

I was very pleased that Greg Wood came in second.

What he did last term was worthy of my respect. Instead of going with the crowd, he instead stood for something.

He walked out because he was not in favour of the new City Hall. One thing that this City is good at is spending money that they do not have. Now, the only way the City can pay for this waste of

money is to raise your taxes.

Now, most Canadians do spend more money than they have already. So, I am sure this is not a concern for most people here in Camrose.

Now, what I am about to share with you came from the City of Camrose 2013 Municipal elections frequently asked questions.

Number nine "What remuneration do Council members receive? Mayor: $53,478.00 per year and City councilor: $17,987.00 per year. I do wonder if that is before tax or if any is taken off?

I have not personally met P. J. Stasko. I was very pleased that he was given the opportunity to show us what he can really do. He did come in last, number eight. I am so excited to see a young man take the time to contribute his time to this great city.

November 4 to 9 marks the College of Family Physicians of Canada’s 10th annual Family Doctor Week in Canada. The college proudly acknowledges the outstanding contributions of Canadian family doctors for their

dedication to their patients and the delivery of high quality health care. As executive director of the Camrose Primary Care Network (PCN), I am also pleased to highlight this important week.

As many of you know a fundamental part of the Camrose PCN’s vision is to support family doctors in delivering coordinated, quality rural primary care with the support of other health providers. Over the past five years the PCN has worked with family doctors in a variety of settings including the Smith Clinic, Gemini Health Centre, Bashaw Medical Clinic, Daysland Medical Clinic and St. Mary’s Hospital. We are very proud of the local PCN programming that has been developed – dedicated to patients and patient care.

Often physician recognition efforts focus on the physician’s clinical performance.

This year, in the spirit of Family Doctor Week, I would like to also recognize the efforts of the PCN board of directors, which includes Dr. Nichol (PCN Physician Lead), Dr. Peters and Dr. Niemann, Dr. Bredesen and Dr. Awakan. Each of the PCN board of directors shows a commitment to working in a collaborative environment, leading the way in providing guidance and expertise – making the Camrose PCN what it is today. Each illustrates physician engagement by supporting and involving themselves in committees, clinical pathway development and championing service or quality.

Over the past years as your Member of Parliament, I am pleased to report that Remembrance Day ceremonies are always well attended in our riding. I have laid the Government of Canada Veterans' Day Wreath in the smallest and largest communities in our riding over the years. I commend everyone who takes the time on November 11 each year to stand with Canada’s military veterans in remembrance of the great sacrifices they have made and continue to make.

Our Conservative government believes that a proud nation that sends brave men and women into harm’s way

must stand with them upon their return. That is why, since taking office, we have made numerous improvements to support and services for veterans. Through eight consecutive budgets, our government has invested almost $5 billion in new funding to enhance veterans' benefits programs and services. Close to 90 per cent of the department's $3.5 billion budget is going toward direct services and support for veterans and their families. Canadians can be very proud of our response to their issues.

While nine per cent of veterans come home without any need from Veterans Affairs, not all veterans make a smooth transition. For these

veterans, improvements to the Enhanced New Veterans Charter provide tools and help to meet their needs.

These benefits include: • Income replacement that ensures their annual income does not fall below 75 per cent of their pre-release military salary with the minimum pre-tax salary set at $42,426.

• An additional monthly financial benefit of up to $1,709.27 for those that suffer from lost job opportunities because of permanent and severe injuries. In the event that a veteran has been severely injured in the service of Canada and cannot find suitable employment on a permanent basis because of those injuries, an additional

monthly support of $1,047.53 is available • Those that have completed rehabilitation and are able to work but have not been able to find a job or have a lowpaying job, may also receive a tax-free monthly payment of up to $2,593.32 plus an additional $328.64 per dependent child.

• A one-time, tax-free award for injuries up to a maximum of $298,587.97.

• Up to $194.45 per month for wear and tear on specially maintained clothing to support a disability.

• In addition, veterans and their families may benefit from a range of other programs offered by Veterans Affairs Canada and the Department of National Defence

Our government is also partnering with community-based organizations to help deliver services to our most vulnerable veterans. Through our innovative partnership with Service Canada, veterans and their families also now have access to over 600 points of service nationwide for basic information or help with applications. Further, through our new online tools such as the Veterans Benefits Browser, and an improved personalized on-line account, our veterans and their families can access the information they need simply and quickly from wherever they are in the world.

It had been a jocular evening. Canada’s National Defense Committee, which I had the privilege to chair, was hosted to a night of fellowship by the town of Maldgem, Belgium, on Feb. 8, 1992.

The all-party committee had been in Europe to reassess our defense requirements given that the, then, Soviet Union had recently elected a new and refreshing leader, Mikhail Gorbachev.

The three-week investigation took us to numerous military and peace centres in a variety of European countries, where we tried to ascertain any change in a perceived threat that may arise from a refreshed Soviet Union.

At the end of our second week, staff had booked us for a “rest day” following days of briefing at NATO headquarters in Brussels. The committee, however, chose instead to visit a Canadian war cemetery. Word of our visit reached a neighbouring town council and they hosted an evening reception with sandwiches and cake that turned into a time of story telling punctuated with laughter and joy.

What was evident, that happy night was the extraordinary regard that the council held for Canadians. In fact, Canada for them, was a place to honour.

The next morning we boarded a small bus to travel to the Adegem War Cemetery.

The spirit of the previous evening continued with on-going joy. That was, up until we drew neared the cemetery.

Increasingly we grew silent until each was alone with the beating of their heart.

We were hushed as we disembarked and walked softly by the big gates, along the manicured hedges and among the perfect pattern of crosses that cast eerie shadows upon the cool ground.

We were struck by the size of the cemetery and the number of crosses that extended with diminishing form to the far away corners beyond.

The low light of a late winter day made a strobe

effect as one passed the rows of markers. Our group disbursed; such moments are deeply private. Each of us was alone gripped by the perfect layout of crosses, upon crosses, upon crosses. It was a heavy moment beyond our capacity to absorb.

Extended rows of crosses, so orderly in all directions, framed by trimmed hedges, in a place of perfect neatness. It fell upon us, that it is they who are at peace and rest together in a great communion and it is we who are the intruders; left to dwell on this immeasurable loss.

We walked among the rows, and read their names with their ages burned into our hearts. James MacDonald, 19; William Neil, 22 and from time-to-time, the sadness of the marking, "An Unknown Solider." Who was this solider? Back on home soil, who had worried, how long did hope endure and when did hope give away?

For more than an hour, silence rang in our ears as we walked row upon row. Occasionally, there was a breezy whisper through the bordering trees.

Later, a group of local school children arrived to lament with us. I was to address this group. Even with a group of 14-year-old boys and girls, silence was the message. These stoic children had such high regard for Canada and Canadians.

Freedom had been regained; a nation had been saved but so terrible was the price.

An hour and a half later we boarded our bus. We returned to our hotel whispering our conversations.

The next morning, the members of three political persuasions remained quiet, reflective and when we spoke, it was as if we might intrude on the orderly experience of yesterday. To this day, that event is a seminal moment that still seems too overwhelming to understand.

Human kind will continue to have disagreements; may we find a more civil way to resolve our differences.

The Camrose Chamber of Commerce made a posthumous presentation of its 2013 Ambassador of the Year award to the late Berdie Fowler Oct. 23.

The award was accepted by Berdie’s son, Blain Fowler.

Berdie moved to Camrose from her home on a farm north of Bittern Lake when she was 15. She had started school at the same time as her younger sister, Edna, and at that time, they both had completed Grade 8, which was as far as they could go at the Elswick School.

The two girls set up housekeeping in an apartment of their own, near the present site of Grace Lutheran Church, and four years later, graduated from Grade 12.

Other than for a period of three years during the Second World War, when she lived near RCAF stations in Canada (where her husband, Bill, was a flying instructor), both Berdie and Edna lived all their lives in Camrose.

“In a nerdy sort of way, mom led a pretty interesting life,” said Blain. “She had the privilege of serving in a variety of roles, most notably as a member of the Alberta Apprenticeship Board and as a director of the Alberta Opportunity Company. Being a part of these organizations gave her the opportunity to visit all corners of Alberta and to see projects and developments that reflected the initiative and entrepreneurship that is the very trademark of our wonderful province. A special highlight of her community service beyond our city was the opportunity to travel as the only woman

Legion a month away from moving to a new home

The Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion will be moving to its new location at the end of November, or early December.

The Legion is currently renovating the old Camrose Golf Course clubhouse and Knights of Columbus building with an addition for hall space.

"We are building a 52 by 32 foot hall on to the existing building. The walls are up now and it should be enclosed by Oct. 29," said Cmdr. Bob Burt, executive vice-president. "We will then form work parties to finish the inside. People can volunteer by calling me at 780-672-5372, or phone the Legion at 780672-3325. We are going to renovate the current building as soon as we receive a building permit from the City."

The fireplace and kitchen will remain on the main floor.

"The kitchen will stay pretty much intact. We will be building three offices for the manager, secretary and treasurer," Bob added.

"Our meeting room will be downstairs, along with a ladies' auxiliary board room and a working room for committees like the poppy fund."

A hallway at the south end will join the old and new structures. A VLT area will be separated from the main hall.

"We now have 1,560 square feet, which is ideal for us. The building needed more space for a hall and

our old site was too big. We will be going from 160 to 120 for seating. It should be the size we need for dances and bingos. We are down to 230 members," said Bob. The hall will be available for rent for functions when the Legion isn't using it.

The cenotaph will also be moving.

"We are meeting with City representatives Jeremy Enarson and Chris Clarkson to look at some architectural drawings and decide if there is room at the new City Hall, or where it should go. There

are other suitable locations. The First World War monument actually belongs to the City and not the Legion," explained Cmdr.

Ragnar Gislason, who is also the chairman of the Poppy Fund. "It was given to the Town of Camrose after the war by the IODE (Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire).

We ended up with it by default. It was being used as a bicycle stand, so it was rescued by the Legion."

The cenotaph is still used today in several ceremonies, including Remembrance Day. "I would like to see a new cenotaph built incorporating the pieces and plaques we have. We have to wait to see when we meet with the City representatives. They may have different ideas than we are thinking of," said Ragnar.

"Our idea is to work with the City to keep both parties happy. We will look at funding to cover the costs of moving."

The Nov. 11 Remembrance Day ceremonies will be held at the Camrose Regional Exhibition and at the present Legion location.

MP Kevin Sorenson will be a guest speaker at the ceremonies, along with a current soldier.

Kozak shares her gift of poetry on Remembrance Day

Lisa Kozak's touching and soothing poems about war and peacekeeping missions caught the eye of the Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Lisa was encouraged to read a poem about her nephew, who was stationed in Afghanistan, to the audience during the Remembrance Day service at the Camrose Regional Exhibition last year.

A lot of people were impressed at her comforting words and she has been asked to share another poem this year.

"I wrote my first poem in creative writing class in Grade 4. Ever since then, I have loved to write poetry," recalled Lisa. "I was addicted from that moment on."

Lisa also likes to write to help people through troubled times.

"I like to write poems to use on the back of funeral cards. Sometimes the words I create are comforting to those who have had a loss. I do have some novels and children's book in the works, but nothing finished yet," explained Lisa. "I like poetry better because it is quick to finish. Things come quickly for me in that form of writing."

ing some computer courses to make her writing process easier.

"If I can do more writing on computers I can finish some of those novels."

When tragedies hit, she digs out her pen to express her thoughts.

"When those children were shot in the United States, I wrote seven different poems that I put on pictures. I shared them with people on Facebook.

When an event happens, my empathy flows through the

The local artist admits that last year's poem was one of her best.

"I wrote Written Echoes based on feelings shared by my nephew, who served in Afghanistan. That was my Flander's Fields of today."

Lisa will read her poem A Soldier's Stance at this year's Remembrance Day service.

"That poem is from his eyes and how it was different to be on foreign soil and

helping, but be hated for it," shared Lisa. "He served for his country, but didn't choose where to fight. It's different to be mad at someone and fight them, rather then say I'm fighting for my country and then going where you are told to go. It's a whole different mindset.

When you rally for something, it is because of your choice. Soldiers go where government tells them there is war."

Modern Canadian soldiers want to make things better in foreign countries.

"Remembrance Day is not just about yesterday, but also about today and tomorrow," she added. "I wanted to write from a soldier's stand point of today.

They are soldiers because that is what they want to do."

The modern war stories are different than those from the First World War and the Second World War. "It was difficult to go to my nephew (Justin Tellier of the Saskatchewan Dragoons) and show him what I wrote because nothing could compare to what he went through. He was truly touched by my poem and said 'Aunt Lisa, you got it,' and I was thankful. I don't write to achieve, but rather to relieve."

Justin left the army in

2010 after he completed his tour of duty.

"He has since joined the navy, but I'm not sure where he is posted now," she added. "It's amazing, but he wanted to go back and serve his country."

Lisa has kept most of her work close to home. "I don't go around trying to sell my writing. I do it as a hobby. I'm just happy that people enjoy my work and that I can share it during Remembrance Day." Lisa is on the executive of the crib club which has several Legion members.

"When they heard about my poem, some suggested I turn them into the Legion," she said. "I was then asked to read my poem on Remembrance Day. I was a bit scared, but my fear was going to be gone in 10 minutes. I thought of all those young men and women who are on the front lines and live with fear. It was the least that I could do."

Coming up with a new poem every year will be a challenge for Lisa.

"I will do it as long as I am asked to. It gives me motivation knowing that people appreciate my work.

It is easier for me to write, than what the difficulties our soldiers go through. It's my way of thanking them."

Questions and Answers with Verlyn Olson The Camrose Booster presented a set of questions to Wetaskiwin-Camrose MLA and Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Verlyn Olson. This is what he had to say.

The Southern Alberta Group for the Environment (SAGE) is encouraging Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (AARD) to undertake a full review of the Agricultural Operations Practices Act (AOPA) legislation dealing with livestock operations and manure management. AARD is considering what changes may be needed to the regulations as well as the Act itself. How many of the SAGE suggestions are you willing to consider and how closely will you be working with SAGE between now and the expiration of the AOPA in 2014?

The Agricultural Operations Practices Act (AOPA) is an important piece of legislation that helps facilitate how livestock operations manage manure, and interact with their neighbours and the environment. While the regulations are set to expire in June 2014, more time is required to ensure we can thoroughly review the legislation, provide our stakeholders with ample opportunity to share their ideas and then draft any necessary amendments. Our plan is to extend the current regulation while a review is underway. The Southern Alberta Group for the Environment is a valued member of the AOPA Policy Advisory Group and we will continue to consider all suggestions they bring forward.

The Battle River Bus Project was developed by the Association for Life-Wide Living of Alberta with the support from the Alberta Rural Development Network as a practical, affordable regional model for rural transportation in Battle River County. How committed is the Alberta Government to this project and what steps are being taken by your department to ensure rural Albertans have the access to the transportation they need?

The Association for Lifewide Living (ALL), has been a very effective advocate for rural issues. In May, I had the chance to speak at the launch of the Battle River Bus. I know that ensuring rural residents, and especially our seniors, have transportation is a growing concern in rural Alberta. I am also aware that other models are being discussed in other regions of the province. Currently, my Ministry and the Ministry of Enterprise and Advanced Education are discussing the possible review of several of our government’s rural development programs in an attempt to ensure that we have the right services and programs in place for rural Albertans.

One of the mandates of your department is to contribute to the sustainability of the province’s export driven economy and develop new access to markets outside the U.S. How successful have you been in doing this?

Opening new markets for Alberta’s exports is one of the cornerstones of the Building Alberta Plan.

There are tremendous opportunities for Alberta to extend its reach into markets such as Asia, Europe and the Middle East, especially for our agricultural products. Last year, our agricultural exports reached a record $9.2 billion, up 14 per cent from the previous year, and there is incredible potential to do even more.

We have been working closely with the federal government and our neighbouring provinces of British Columbia and Saskatchewan to increase our presence in the global marketplace, and I am pleased with the success we have been having.

Over the past year, ARD has worked with industry to facilitate more than $45 million in export sales through international contacts, Japan has expanded access to Canadian beef, and China has approved more Alberta meat processors to export product to their country.

During my recent trip to Kazakhstan, I discovered a nation that is very eager to do business with Alberta because of our expertise and world-class reputation in livestock, livestock genetics as well as other agriculture products and services.

Alberta has received the same enthusiastic response during trade missions to China, the most recent led

in September, where there is an appetite for our high quality beef and other products such as honey, canola oil, wheat, barley, oats and peas.

As we move ahead, I am looking to the successful conclusion of Canadian trade negotiations with Europe and India, which will open even more doors for Alberta agriculture.

It has been almost two months now since the completion of the Tour of Alberta. Have you seen any tangible benefits resulting from this event and what are the chances the government will provide more funding in the future?

It is still a little early to assess the full impact that the Tour of Alberta had on this province, but that is something we are working on. I can tell you first-hand, after attending many of the events, that the tour generated excitement and pride in all of the communities along the race route, while also drawing impressive crowds and building a greater appreciation of the sport of cycling.

One of my priorities is to raise the profile of rural Alberta and I think the Tour of Alberta was a very unique way to showcase our communities and promote tourism to a worldwide television audience. While government provided seed funding to help the tour get started, our hope is that race organizers can use the momentum from the inaugural year to start moving toward a self-sustaining, annual event.

You went to Kazakhstan in May to promote agriculture and develop trade opportunities. What can we expect to see come out of that mission in the future?

I am very encouraged about the potential for a productive, long-term partnership with Kazakhstan. The country is working hard to develop its agriculture sector, and Alberta is well-positioned to have an important role in that development with our expertise in livestock, livestock genetics, equipment and other sectors within the agriculture industry.

While visiting Kazakhstan, the Alberta delegation strengthened some important relationships with government officials and leaders within their agriculture community. Alberta companies have already secured contracts worth an estimated $10 million and other negotiations are still underway. That success builds on an estimated $25 million in business that was generated by a previous trade mission.

This fall, I am looking forward to further strengthening our trade relationship as a Kazakhstan delegation has accepted an invitation to visit Farmfair International in Edmonton.

The Growing Forward 2 program which took effect April 2 provides funding to deliver federal-provincial territorial programs in a variety of areas including innovation, strategic initiatives and business risk management.

What kind of buy-in have you seen to this program?

Growing Forward 2 was developed with input from our stakeholders and producers, and focuses on investing in programs that will achieve the best longterm results for our agriculture industry. Funding for strategic programs has been increased by 50 per cent to more than $400 million over the next five years in priorities areas such as environmental stewardship, food safety, farm safety, business management and market development.

To date, more than 20 strategic programs have been launched and we are receiving a steady stream of applications with several programs already fully subscribed for the year.

You have been reported as saying that Washington’s Country of Origin Labelling (COOL) is hurting Canadian cattle and hog producers, and if Americans don’t change the rules, it may soon be time for Canada to retaliate through tariffs targeted at U.S. producers. How much are Canadian, and particularly, Alberta producers, being hurt by Country of Origin Labelling and what can be done by the Alberta and Canada governments to bring about greater fairness?

The U.S. government’s Country of Origin Labelling (COOL) is impacting the livestock industry on both sides of the border by imposing hundreds of millions of dollars in additional and

unnecessary costs that do nothing to protect consumers. For example, feedlots and processors incur extra costs by having to segregate Canadian and U.S. cattle to meet the labelling requirements.

The Alberta and Canadian governments continue to pursue all avenues to pressure the U.S. federal government to change its mandatory labelling legislation. We are making some headway, although not as quickly as I would like. Over the course of the summer, we’ve succeeded in having U.S. state legislators pass a number of resolutions that acknowledge the negative economic impact of COOL and call on the U.S. Congress to find a fair solution to this issue.

We’re also pleased that the World Trade Organization is also going to rule on new and equally onerous COOL requirements that were put forward by the U.S. government this spring. The WTO has twice previously ruled in support of our position that COOL is an unfair trade measure.

If the U.S. federal government continues to fail to meet its trade obligations, the Canadian government may have no choice but to move forward with retaliatory trade measures that will impact a wide variety of U.S. imports ranging from beef and cheese to mattresses and office furniture.

I hope it doesn’t come to that, but I share the livestock industry’s frustration that this issue has dragged on for many years. We support the Canadian government’s actions in defence of our livestock producers and industry.

How have your duties at AARD affected your ability to stay in contact with constituents?

I think that any Cabinet Minister will tell you that Ministerial duties add an extra challenge in terms of staying engaged with one’s own constituents, the people who elected us in the first place. Having said that, many of my constituents have also told me that they are very happy that I am in Cabinet, as one does perhaps spend more time with policy makers.

Besides having a seat at the Cabinet table, I sit on the Operations and Policy Cabinet Committee, the Agenda and Priorities Committee, as well as the Ministerial Working Group on Natural Resources and Environment. As well, I have many meetings with my Departmental staff and over 600 stakeholder groups around the province (commodity groups, Agricultural Societies, Irrigation Councils, Rural Electrification Associations, Rural Gas Coops, and various agencies, boards and commissions).

When we are in Session, I typically go to Edmonton on Sunday night and, at least theoretically, come back to the Constituency on Thursday night. That would leave Friday for meetings in the Constituency, and the weekend for further meetings, dinners, events and a little family time. When we are not in Session, the schedule is very similar. I find that my Ministerial duties often encroach into Fridays, but I try to find the odd weekday to spend in the Constituency too.

One thing is obvious: I rely on a great Constituency Assistant. Wendy handles hundreds of calls and visits every month and is often able to connect with the relevant Government department and obtain answers or intervene on a Constituent’s behalf, sometimes even before I am aware of the issue. She keeps me advised as to what she’s working on by providing me with a daily report by email.

Tribute to be paid to war nurses

Camrose Heritage Railway Station is making plans to pay tribute to First World War veterans by hosting their third Founders Day Festival Dessert Theater with a First World War theme. There will be several entertaining components to

the evening including a dramatization monologue of a First World War nurse’s story. Glenys Smith, an experienced storyteller and a retired nurse will write the monologue. Sandra McClay will assist with directing the presentation.

Severson named school board chair

Kendall Severson is ready to take on his next challenge. He was named chair of the Battle River School Division board of trustees at the board’s organizational meeting on Oct. 31.

The Bawlf area resident served two three-year terms as a trustee prior to agreeing to another four years.

“I really like the fouryear term because with six brand new trustees the learning curve will be extremely steep. You get so much thrown at you the first few months. It will help to receive a greater understanding of the whole process,” Kendall said.

Kendall is an incumbent, along with Rebecca Heiberg .

“We want to mentor the new board members. That is our philosophy, to help new people. I did lots of watching and observing during my two terms. I was able to always ask questions and learn,” said Kendall on his own mentoring and working with superintendent Dr. Larry Payne. “Mentoring is critical because we are all here for the same reasons, to help children.”

Kendall had some thoughts about serving as the board chair after the election. “People put that bug in my ear the week before, so I gave it some prior consideration. It is a big challenge, but I’m ready for that,” said the exited Kendall. “ Judith Mazankowski’s name was also put forward as a possible chair. She served on the school board 10 years ago. Kendall received the position with the most votes from other trustees.

“It feels good that people have the confidence in me.

I was encouraged that I am able to be the chair,” he added. “With four children currently enrolled in the Bawlf School, I feel it is very impor-

tant to be involved in their lives. Children are a blessing and not a right. We need to put the children first and foremost.”

Lorrie Sitler was appointed as the vice-chair.

The other trustees include James Andre, Norm Erickson, Tracey Boast Radley and Laurie Skori.

“I’m excited about this board. The enthusiasm was very evident. I can tell from the five brand new people that there is some ‘deer in the headlights’ happening with so much to take in. My philosophy is to deal with what happens today, learn and move on without trying to be overwhelmed,” he explained.

“You can’t learn everything at once. The enthusiasm was high and filling positions on committees was not a challenge at all.”

Kendall will encourage trustees to attend zone meetings and be engaged in their community.

“We want to follow up on the ministerial order and engage the public with consultations.

Planning will start shortly and that’s exciting. It’s very important to have a community voice.

We want people to know they can be heard and have input,” said Kendall.

The future of education in Alberta is moving towards priorities to create citizens who are engaged thinkers, ethical citizens and have entrepreneurial spirit.

“We have been trying to do this for several years.

At the Bawlf high school, students wanted more CTS training, especially in the automotive, welding and construction area. We changed that to allow them to use the labs at CCHS. That really resonates the idea of every student, every day, a success.

I had parents say that their child is engaged, and they used that word, in school in all classes now because of it.

By allowing them to have a welding class or some class that excites them, it tends to translate to other classes.

He is learning now and he will do so much better now.

Adapting to meet the need of the student is so important. Our ultimate goal is to have every student receive a diploma.”

Kendall said the board will be striving to find success for every student. He is also excited about the completion of the new school in Bawlf.

Family violence month awareness

Family violence is everyone’s business. This statement is displayed during November (Family Violence Prevention month) and is the reality of the social issue that faces

many women in our local community and all across the world. Although this is an extremely tough subject to discuss, let alone read about, we do have to talk about the issue of domestic violence. Fashion,

food, weather and entertainment are constantly changing and often are the conversations we hold with people as these topics are superficially safe and acceptable.

Skating club featured

2013 FESTIVAL OF TREES COME

Members of the Camrose Skating Club received a pleasant surprise when they saw their photos being projected onto the ice during the Battle of the Blades competition on CBC television Oct. 27.

“We thought we would try and tweet some group photos to them (CBC) to see if they would be shown and they were,” said Camrose Skating Club member Sara Zylka. “We submitted four photos and from what we saw, at least four of them were shown.”

One of the photos was of the Camrose Starskate group, while another was of the junior development team.

“We didn’t know that they were going to show our photos ahead of time,” said Zylka. “The skaters who saw their pictures come up during the show were pretty excited.”

CBC is generating extra excitement around this year’s Battle of the Blades by inviting organizations and individuals from across Canada to submit their photos.

“Each week we feature photos from people on the ice and around the arena,” states the Battle of the Blades website. “It’ll be like you are part of the show.”

Camrose Skating Club’s photos received good comments on Twitter from Shaelynn Bourne, one of the Battle of the Blades contestants who was eliminated, and Paul McGrath, executive producer of CBC interactive.

“McGrath commented on a couple of them and retweeted them,” said Zylka.

The excitement of the television exposure got even better when CBC producers informed Camrose Skating Club after the show that it had won a party kit containing Battle of the Blades branded stickers, balloons, hats, cups and flags (approximate retail value of $75) for explaining in a two paragraph submission why it should have a Battle of the Blades party.

“We’re going to be using the kit at the skate-a-thon involving our Canskaters November 14,” said Zylka.

“We’re going to have the Augustana Vikings come out to skate with our kids that day as a way of raising funds for the club.”

Camrose Skating Club is planning on submitting more photos to the Battle of the Blades in hopes of generating exposure for all its members.

“We had photos taken of our three-year-old’s at a Halloween party this past Monday night and we are hoping to Tweet those, as well as the pictures of the skate-a-thon,” said Zylka. “We also want to send in pictures of the Camrose Rusty Blades and the power skating groups so that nobody feels left out.”

Sahakarini fundraiser aiding Catch the Rain projects

A pair of infamous sandals as well as numerous other auction items will be up for grabs to raise funds for two new global projects at the upcoming Sahakarini fundraiser dinner.

The Loaves and Fishes Dinner, now in its 12th year, will be held on Friday, Nov. 15 at the Norsemen Inn with the theme “Catch the Rain.”

Funds raised through the silent and live auctions as well as by donation will go towards the group’s two new projects: sand dams in Kenya and an agriculture and forestry project in Columbia.

“We feel it’s important because we can make an impact at a local level through our trusted partners,” said Sahakarini pastpresident Alan Fielding, who noted that they don’t have a specific target amount to raise at the event. “We just depend on the generosity of our donors.”

Auction items include a canoe trip with leader Morten Asfeldt, a threeday condo rental in Canmore, and a biking trip to Dried Meat Lake and lunch with Ron and Vivian Grue.

A few items from Uganda, brought back by treasurer Don Rebus and wife, Chris, will also be included in the fundraiser.

In February, the couple travelled to a remote part of Uganda to see a program in action that offered assistance to the Iryango Widows Association, an often

marginalized group in that country. Sahakarini offered money to the widows so they could lease land, grow crops and sustain themselves.

“We went there and saw how the project was progressing,” Rebus said. “It has made a huge impact on that community and it was interesting to see how well they’re doing. The children are able to go to school, the widows are able to support themselves, and grow cash crops to sell.”

He noted that the group of women were organized and had ideas, but just needed a bit of extra help. He said

it was quite humbling to feel so appreciated when they arrived in Uganda.

“We’re very lucky to be born in this country and province. Sometimes we don’t realize that we can have a huge impact with a relatively modest contribution,” Rebus said. “We feel very fortunate that in some small way, we can help these people to get on with their lives.”

Sahakarini, which is Hindi for cooperation, was began as a charity in 1979

by Camrosians Gordon and Mina Schieck, Norman and Eloise Umbach, and Jane

and Jack Ross. Since then, the group has helped with education and health care projects, supported schools, skills training for income generation, and micro credit programs, which is small loans for people who have an income earning idea.

These projects have been carried out in India, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Zambia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Haiti, Brazil, Guatemala and Columbia.

“The feedback we’ve had has been very positive. Some of the projects we’ve funded such as a technology school in India is still operating

on its own,” Fielding said.

“That to us is very gratifying. By providing seed money, we’ve enabled people to have access to land and crops that can support them and their families.”

Fielding, who has been involved with the group since the mid-1980s, said that the projects and themes have changed over the years, but they have stayed true to their mandate of helping the poorest of the poor to help themselves.

One popular annual item at the fundraiser is a pair of sandals, originally worn by founder Gordon Schieck, who passed away several years ago. Schieck first purchased the sandals from an artisan in India in the 1950s. Fielding purchased the sandals at the first fundraising dinner in 2001 and then again last year, taking them on his travels to Sweden, Switzerland and France in the past year.

“When I wear them I think of the original owner, Gordon Schieck, and the good work he had done over the years. His example is certainly a strong one for me,” Fielding said. “It’s always fun to see them go to another person and see them walk a mile in Gordon’s sandals.”

Camrose Toastmasters share their stories

The Toastmasters organization has been part of the Camrose community for six decades. From young adults to original charter members, nearly every age group has been represented.

A glimpse of this universality was given at a gala hosted at the banquet room of the Best Western Oct. 18. As Toastmasters of all ages and creeds gathered to celebrate, each of them had their own way of explaining what being a Toastmaster meant to them.

A particular important revelation came from the president of the local club, Lynn Carwell. Lynn and her daughter, a former Toastmaster, were both present at the event. About the banquet, and the organization in general, Lynn said “this banquet celebrates the club’s sixtieth birthday and celebrates the fact that we are Toastmasters, and at one point we all left our comfort zones to gain confidence and selfesteem and even, at times, suffer humiliation and now we know why. Toastmasters learn logically and speak

positively of matters that they feel are worthwhile and learn with open minds and listen with respect to each other. They advocate personal freedom and freedom of speech.”

Carwell's daughter, Kimberly, had a similar statement to make.

“Being a Toastmaster helped me immensely in my schooling and now in my career. I was able to leave my comfort zone and give presentations, as well as interact with people on a personal and professional level.”

The Toastmasters are an intriguing and unique organization, and the Camrose club is particularly of note, because it was one of the first to allow women to be members – even before they were officially allowed to be members. In Camrose, the history of women in the club goes back to the 1950s. Male members, faced with declining membership, brought their wives to the club, and the club flourished with this new population.

The club was able to skirt regulations by signing the admission forms of women with initials rather than full

names, and the population, while fluctuating, remained healthy. In 1972, Toastmasters International passed legislation that women could be full-fledged members, by local club preference, and Camrose was one of the first clubs to extend invitations to female members, many of whom were already attending meetings.

The Camrose club has made a unique mark on the greater organization.

Toastmasters span all walks of life, from students and salespeople to international diplomats and political figures. They coordinate within communities and network together to gain self-respect and self-esteem.

One 43-year veteran, Peter Kossowan, said that the organization now spans over 120 countries and has over a third of a million members. He told the crowd that the greatest part of being a member of the Toastmasters is seeing the difference it makes in people's lives.

Seeing how it helps them to become better people, more confident in themselves and better able to face the world.

Toastmasters meet people from across the world,

forming friendships, maintaining those friendships and influencing lives even from across the globe.

Public figures from the municipal government and provincial government attended the banquet – some Toastmasters and some of them not – and each of them was welcomed. They in turn welcomed each and every attendee of the banquet.

In addition to the public figures, high ranking figures of the Toastmasters were in attendance.

They greeted the club with respect and carried themselves with great personal confidence and dignity, a sense of identity that they conveyed to the entire room.

Toastmasters who have governed areas as large as Alberta and Saskatchewan and as small as the Camrose club were present; they were met with a level of respect often reserved for mentors.

Indeed, that is what the organization seems to be, an organization of mentors.

Following a delicious dinner and a cake baked by a leading club member (Joan Petruk) and her daughter, table topics finished the eve-

ning. Two minutes of speaking on an unknown topic by various picked members from each table. These topics ranged from the historical growth of Toastmasters and books published by a former member of the local club, Carla Coates, with her novel on personal growth Through Thorns I Thrive, to personal leadership and adventures on vacations.

Even Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Verlyn Olson, not even a member of Toastmasters, was asked to speak and agreed to speak, on a topic relevant to his portfolio. Each of the speaking topics conveyed either a heartwarming anecdote or an article of wisdom, and each was delivered with the confidence that Toastmasters strives to instill in each and every member.

Toastmasters is an organization that spans the globe and every walk of life.

It works to help members gain confidence in themselves as speakers. As the Toastmasters say, "keep it simple. Take what you have, and do what you can with it."

Family Violence Month Continued from page 18

We all have our opinions, our views, beliefs around poverty, domestic abuse and addictions and sometimes these differences cause us to lose sight of the underlying issue; people are in need of our help. One of the many agencies that are addressing this issue is the Camrose Women’s Shelter Society.

At the Camrose Women’s Shelter, we have very compassionate frontline workers who are doing an amazing job behind the scenes. Often times it has been suggested that people think we are merely a ‘safe place’ for women and children to go to in an emergency. About 400 women and children in 2012–13 used our services to escape domestic violence. However, our services are much more diverse than just a safe place.

Our frontline workers are diligently and tirelessly working to provide empathetic listening during all hours of the day and night. They provide therapeutic programming in areas of life skills, facilitating women’s sharing circles, parenting groups, bonding activities for mom’s and children and they make referrals and provide advocacy and information on services in our community. We have a full time school teacher right at the shelter and our family support program offers child care while moms are attending programming or appointments. In addition to all of the great work we do inside the shelter we also have an outreach program that supports women in transitioning into our community as well as providing information, support, advocacy, groups, or public education to anyone regardless if they need shelter bed space or not.

In the last 28 years, it is safe to say that the Camrose Women’s Shelter has served an estimation of 9,100 women and children. (This is based on an average of 325 per year; however, our last 10 years have been closer to 400 to 500 women and children per year).

The numbers are outstanding and they have not decreased.

The increase in numbers fluctuates with regards to a multitude of things, but what we see in the Camrose Women’s Shelter is that when our numbers are up we have many women that are experiencing extreme financial difficulty resulting in a real challenge for them in accessing and maintaining affordable housing.

During Family Violence Awareness Month we are hoping to have more community members ask questions, and instead of concentrating on our differences of opinions, try and come up with ways we all can support and care for these families who need our help.

CAMROSE & DAYSLAND

Wayne Willard Yoder Wayne was born on February 28, 1923 on the farm of Jake and Barbara Yoder and was the fourth child of five. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at St. Mary’s Hospital on October 27, 2013 at the age of 90 years and eight months.

Wayne attended Grand Forks school for eight years and Round Hill school for one year. He walked or rode horseback to school.

Wayne married Lily Roth on June 24, 1945. They lived on the farm for seven years, in Round Hill for 18 years, and in Camrose for 43 years.

Wayne enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and curling. It was not uncommon to come home from work and find a bag of produce on the doorknob.

Wayne was a farmer, worked for Alvin Labelle, owned a store in partnership with Vic Pedersen which he then owned with Lily, had Purity 99 bulk gas and oil, owned a coffee shop, ran the post office in Round Hill, drove a school bus for 16 years, worked as a Singer sales representative, and drove a delivery truck for several different lumber companies, from which he retired.

Sharing his memories are his family, wife Lily (of 68+ years); four children Sylvia (Murray) Lauber, Beatrice (Richard) Foshaug, Joan (Hector) Dumonceaux and Ken Yoder (Edie Dul); 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; one sister Goldie Ferguson (living in Ontario); along with numerous extended family members.

Wayne was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, and one sister.

Also left to mourn is special friend Brian Burnstad. Lily cared for Brian when his mother was in the sanitorium with tuberculosis.

Brian was born in the sanitorium and Lily cared for him for eight months before his mother was released as a healthy individual.

Wayne was a faithful attendee of Salem Mennonite Church.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 1, 2013 at Salem Mennonite Church south of Tofield.

Vikings beat NAIT in critical home game

In what many fans were calling the most important hockey game of the first half of the season, the Augustana Vikings defeated the NAIT Ooks 4-1 in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference play on Oct. 30.

Augustana gave NAIT a scare a day prior to Halloween by winning despite being outshot 46-21.

Goalie Joel Danyluk used all the tricks he had to stop the Ooks from winning, including a 22 for 22 save outing in the third period.

Kevin Lourens, Konrad Litke, Brad Bourke and Dane Bonish supplied enough offence to damper NAIT though of making a comeback. The Ooks' only tally came on a power play.

If you are a Vikings hockey fan this game was tough to accept. The Vikings lost a 4-1 decision to the MacEwan Griffins in Edmonton, which forced Augustana to be satisfied with a split in the weekend series in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference play on Oct. 25 and 26.

The Vikings' only offence came off the stick of Dane Bonish in the first period. He had some help from Konrad Litke and Brad Bourke, who assisted on the scoring drive.

Goalie Andy Williams stopped 31 of 35 shots he faced in the Augustana net. The Vikings fired 38 at the MacEwan net.

In the rematch, every puck Bonish touched seemed to turn into a scoring chance.

He garnered a hat trick in both goals and assists and turned in a six point night.

Goalie Chase Martin earned his third win of the year by stopping 28 of 33 shots sent at the Vikings' cage. The Vikings had 36 shots on the MacEwan net.

After 10 games, Scott Aucoin leads the team in points with 14.

Adam Johnson has the most goals with seven and has 11 points. Craig Cornelsen is next with 10 points. The Vikings are the least penalized team in the league.

Joel Danyluk is the top Augustana goalie with a goals against average of 1.62 in three games. Andy Williams is next with a 1.71 average in four games.

The Camrose Kodiaks stole the show and robbed the Brooks Bandits of two points, mauling them 4-1 in the EnCana Arena Oct. 29.

It was the most complete and rewarding game the Kodiaks have played at home this season.

"It proved to everyone that we can beat anyone in this league," said goalie Matt Zentner. "It took a lot of hard work just to get to that point, but it paid off last night (Oct. 29)."

The offence was spread around the dressing room with Nick Harder and Mark Nerland collecting single markers in the opening period.

Brooks scored on a power play, but Nerland's marker just 45 seconds later set the tone of the game.

"We just need to keep working through these things. Not to make excuses, but we have had some bad breaks and it (the bounces) all came together for us," said Matt. "We battled hard throughout the whole game."

Camrose came out strong in the middle frame and received goals from defenceman Luc Lemire and Brett Njaa.

The Kodiaks played a shut down contest in the last period.

"We are all a little happier right now. It's a good win, but it is back to work now. Coach (Boris Rybalka) said it was a good win, but it is back to work for the next one," added Matt.

The rookie goalie was named the star of the game. He stopped 41 of 42 shots fired in his direction. In a rare occurrence, Camrose was out shot, 42-37.

"The most important thing for me was getting the win," said Matt. "Making timely saves is something we need right now and to be able to step up really felt good. I felt good in the morning and was ready to play. I shook off the goal against. I was playing well, so I just kept focused."

Brooks is in first place in the southern division.

"It gives us confidence to beat a team like Brooks. We can beat any team on any night," said Matt, about his team who was missing three players at the Team Canada West camp. "We played hard from whistle to whistle and no one took a shift off. It was a case of 23 players stepping up."

The Drumheller Dragons burned the Camrose Kodiaks with two tallies in a minute and three goals in the opening period to win 5-2 on Oct. 27.

The Kodiaks rebounded in the second by outshooting Drumheller 10-6, but had nothing on the scoresheet to show for it.

After the Dragons notched a power play marker in the third, Camrose fought back with two goals in 38 seconds. Ryan Huolt and Nelson Gadour y supplied the scoring for the Kodiaks.

Devin McDonald started in the net for Camrose and made eight of 11 saves. Matt Zentner came in relief and turned away nine of 11 shots.

In a rougher affair, the Olds Grizzlys had the bigger growl in winning 5-3 on Oct. 25. The Kodiaks scored a goal in each period, however, Olds netted two in both the first and second frames to come out ahead in the contest.

Gadoury, Ryker Leer and Luc Vandale collected single markers for Camrose as the team dominated the play and poured on the shots. The

Kodiaks had 20 shots on goal in the first period and out shot Olds 43-29 over three periods.

The goalies again split the duties. McDonald stopped 11 out of 14 and Zentner made 13 of 14 saves.

Camrose earned a point in a 3-2 shootout loss against Drumheller on Oct. 24.

Leer and Josh Smith recorded the tallies in the middle frame. Camrose again had the edge in shots, 33-28. McDonald stopped 26 of 28 pucks directed his way.

Smith will be away for two weeks to play in the World Junior Challenge in Halifax. Tanner MacMaster and Scott Feser returned to the Kodiaks.

Meanwhile, the Kodiaks traded Jason Duret to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey Leagueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s LaRonge Ice Wolves.

In 11 games with Camrose, Duret picked up three assists. He played in LaRonge as an affiliate player last year where he had a goal and an assist in three games.

The next home games are on Nov. 8 and 9 when the Calgary Canucks and Okotoks Oilers take on the Kodiaks at 7 p.m.

The 2014 Chevrolet Trax at McClellan Wheaton Buick GMC in Camrose is creating quite the stir.

Trax provides Chevrolet an entry into a growing small SUV segment and delivers the flexibility, great fuel economy and carlike handling that urban explorers around the world require.

Standard EcoTec engine With a standard 1.4 litre turbocharged ECOTEC engine, Trax gets you around and about the streets with full authority.

Its output is a spirited 138 horsepower and 148 lb.-ft. of torque. So what is the advantage of turbocharging? It directs substantially

more air into each cylinder, enabling it to optimize each combustion cycle, while an intercooler cools the charged air entering the engine, allowing for more complete combustion and greater power output.

Yet unlike many other turbocharged engines, the ECOTEC runs on regular fuel. Turbocharging not only increases output, it also makes Trax remarkably fuel efficient, with 7.8 litres per 100 km city and 5.7 litres per 100 km highway ratings.

Maximum grip Trax's confident handling is the product of a wide stance and a series of driver control technologies that include standard StabiliTrak four-wheel ABS with Panic Brake Assist and Hill Hold Assist. An available ondemand All-Wheel Drive system automatically adapts to changing road conditions, improving traction by sending power to the wheels with the most grip. Community ServiceLearning officially began as a program at Augustana in 2008. It encourages university students to get out of the traditional classroom and engage with the world in order to make connections between theory and practice.

Community ServiceLearning continues the Augustana tradition of community engagement

by connecting students with the community of Camrose, its involved citizenry, and numerous and varied organizations. CSL courses present students with opportunities to meet people working in their field, and gain confidence in applying their knowledge in ways that maximize benefit to the community, student learning, and

classroom experience. Commonly, students enrolled in a CSL class complete approximately 20 hours of volunteer service that benefits the community – often with a non-profit organization.

This term, seven Augustana management students chose to work with Sahakarini, a nongovernment organization centred in Camrose but

working with international partners to help the poor and marginalized people of the world help them selves.

Why did the students choose Sahakarini? Their reasons were varied but here are few of them: “I wanted to give back to the community, to know what projects Sahakarini supports, to understand what the objectives of this organization are, to participate in a fund raising event.”

Thanks to the enthusiasm and proactive work of the students, they are well on the way to meeting these goals. They have been given material to read, internet sites to research and time lines to meet. Through group discussions we will answer more of their questions.

The students have helped write this article and some CSL students participat-

ed in SCORE, a college free garage sale Oct. 17 in the college’s library foyer, where Sahakarini had a display table and benefitted from donations and matching chaplaincy money. Their primary goal, however, was to help promote Sahakarini’s main fund raising dinner, the Loaves and Fishes Dinner which is scheduled for Friday, November 15, at 5:30, in the Norsemen Inn. The students are using aquariums to visually demonstrate how sand dams in Utooni Kenya help retain water after floods and how this changes the lives of the people involved. Our CSL students will be available at the Loaves and Fishes dinner to discuss their displays and may even tell you about their Community Service-Learning experience.

Ambrose finds healing through carving

By Dan Jensen Jayson D. Ambrose has found expression and healing through the creation of sculptures in stone.

“Over the years my carving journey has taken me through various aspects of my life: exploration, selfawareness, appreciation for my surroundings, nature’s sights and sounds and reflection of the past,” said the self-taught Camrose artist, who will be selling and displaying his carvings at the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre during the month of November. “It’s through those memories, experiences and appreciations that I have been able to carve in stone.”

Ambrose’s soapstone, alabaster and pipestone sculptures blend his cultural heritage and childhood memories with everyday life experiences. Nature’s animals – bears, birds and fish – are his primary focus, although he also does sculptures of sailboats, inukshuks, and insects, and enjoys exploring celtic themes.

“As an artist,” he said, “I feel honoured to bring rocks to life, revealing nature’s colourful and powerful beauty.”

Ambrose prefers using basic hand tools while carving, rarely relying on power tools. It is this hands-on approach that gives him a personal connection and appreciation for the stone with which he is working.

Ambrose describes himself as being half of the artist, with the other half being Mother Nature.

“I create the image while Mother Nature provides the colours and the beauty,” he said. “There are times when I have an idea for a sculpture I want to carve, however, when I look at the stone in front of me, it shouts out something totally different. The next thing I know I’ve carved out an image which the rock had originally revealed.”

Ambrose will be giving a free demonstration of his stone carving at the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre between the hours of 4 and 6 p.m. Starting in the new year, he will be hosting workshops and classes for adults and children who want to learn the techniques so they can create a beautiful stone sculpture of their own.

Central Agencies Home of the Week Burlingame sets best time, ready for Beautiful ready to move in home running nationals

Ryan Burlingame pushed himself in the most important cross-country running event of the season. Saving the best performance for when it really counted, paid off for the Augustana athlete.

Ryan recorded his best time, 28:52 over eight kilometres, to place sixth and lead his Vikings team to a fifth place finish in provincials to earn a chance to compete in nationals. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was Ryanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best race of his life and he turned in a fantastic time,â&#x20AC;? said Augustana assistant running coach Robert Renman. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We also had very impressive running by Hans Asfeldt. He had a time of 29:33 and was in 12th place.â&#x20AC;?

Several of the runners set new personal bests on a very tough course. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Keely MacCulloch ran very strong and finished in 17th place in a very competitive womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s field with a new best time of 21:39. Blaze Flewell (30th) and Taya Hoar (31st) also ran very well,â&#x20AC;? added Robert.

The Vikings menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team cross-country runners are preparing for the college cross-country nationals in Etobicoke, Ontario on Nov. 9.

Volleyball

Augustana menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team came out firing on all cylinders as they crushed the Olds Broncos 25-8, 25-18 and 25-10 in the opening match of the regular season.

Veteran Nazheef Gangi led the charge with 12 kills and tied Max Lesziak with four digs. Jordon Gardiner stopped Olds with seven blocks.

On the womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s side, the Vikings didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t fair as well.

The team started off strong, but faded quickly in dropping three straight games. Keri Alcorn was the top Viking with nine kills.

The Vikings travel to Fort McMurray for a twomatch weekend against Keyano Nov. 8 and 9.

Basketball

The Augustana Vikings womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team started the season with two victories.

They defeated Olds 77-48 and SAIT 67-59. On the menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s side, Augustana won its first game, but dropped a 57-52 game to SAIT in a low scoring affair.

The basketball teams host the Kingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Eagles for games Nov. 8. The womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s game begins at 6 p.m. and the men are scheduled for 8 p.m.
