Camrose First Responders will be camping out around the clock in order to raise funds and create awareness for Special Olympics Camrose.

is a key fundraiser, in partnership with the (nationally acclaimed) Law Enforcement Torch Run, a program of the last quarter-century, aimed squarely at raising money and awareness for Special Olympics training and activities. Athletes and individuals from Camrose Police Service, RCMP, Camrose Fire Department and EMS personnel will be circulating the Walmart parking lot in hopes that shoppers will be generous enough to make a donation they can afford to the program. A barbecue is planned for both days. In addition, there will be emergency vehicle demonstrations, a merchandise table, cheerful mascots, a K-9 demonstration, music and even a Friday evening parking lot dance.

Cafe Connections will be closing its doors By Dan Jensen

Camrose Open Door Association's Cafe Connections will be closing its doors at the end of this month. "We want to put our focus more on housing and supports," explained Camrose Open Door Association executive director Randal Nickel. "We feel that providing a safe place to stay will make the most difference to the youth we serve in terms of their health, well being, schooling and employment." Camrose Open Door Association currently spends $200,000 a year on on providing food, shelter and staff supports. "That is a real significant cost and at this point we don't always have the funding for it," said Nickel. "As a result we have to raise that money in another way." Cafe Connections was started in early summer of 2009 with funding from the Rural Alberta Development Fund, a Government of Alberta initiative that was designed to help projects in rural communities which provided transferrable skills. "Over a period of four and a half years with the help of the Rural Alberta Development Fund and other grants from the Counselling Foundation of Canada and Alberta Health Services, we were able to provide employment, skill development and work experience to about 75 youth," said Nickel. "The goal when we started was to help bridge the gaps so the they could gain the hands on skills and be successful in the job market and in the community. I think the people who went through the program will tell you that it made a difference. We thank the youth who spent their time with us and we celebrate their learning." The Camrose Open Door Association will continue to provide skill development opportunities for youth staying in its housing and for drop-in clients. "We are going to do more in terms of working with them individually, as opposed to having them come to an official workplace," said Nickel. "We'll help them identify the skills they feel they need, whether it is writing for a resume, handling an interview, making a budget or communicating with others. We are focused on being relentless in our pursuit of positive outcomes for the youth of the community." Nickel said while the Camrose Open Door Association does not have any firm plans for the Cafe Connections space, there is a possibility it could be put up for rent. "We have a fully equipped kitchen, which could be used to do cooking classes or something like that." Cafe Connections will be celebrating its successes with a special breakfast from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 2.

Funding announced for Rosealta expansion By Dan Jensen

Crowfoot Member of Parliament Kevin Sorenson and Wetaskiwin-Camrose MLA Verlyn Olson announced $9.6 million in funding from the $121 million Investment in Affordable Housing Agreement for a project that will create an additional 40 new affordable housing units for low income seniors at Rosealta Lodge. "Making sure rural lodges can accommodate more seniors is a high priority for the Alberta government," said Olson in a program at Rosealta Lodge Sept. 10. "The expanded Rosealta Lodge will welcome more seniors, so they can be near their loved ones. The additional rooms will enable the neighbouring lodge to be used for other housing needs in the community." Sorenson said that in addition to giving residents the stability, the comfort and safety of familiar surroundings, the new housing units should help ease concerns about finances. "This is a great news story for people in housing need and for Camrose itself. By providing more rental options for local seniors, these new housing units will contribute to the economic and social well being of the entire community. This gives hope to residents who need quality, affordable housing that meets their needs." Camrose and Area

Lodge Authority board chair Max Lindstrand said the funding is an indication that, even in these tough times of restraint, the provincial and federal governments are committed to the ongoing enhancement of lodge facilities. "Our lodges are special places that provide a high quality of life for our seniors." Sorenson said the federal government understands that having a safe and affordable place to call home is important to Canadian families and their communities. "Through Canadian Mortgage and Housing

Corporation, the Government of Canada will invest approximately $2 billion in housing this year. Of this amount, $1.7 billion will be spent in support of close to 594,000 households living in existing social housing. In Alberta this represents 37,250 households. These investments are improving the quality of life for Canadians in households living in existing social housing, including individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, seniors, persons with disabilities, recent immigrants and aboriginal people. The commitment continues with Economic Action Plan 2013,

which provides more than $1.25 billion over five years to renew the Investment in Affordable Housing program." Olson said by providing affordable housing options to seniors the government is keeping communities healthy. "This is about seniors and providing housing to seniors. It strikes me that we talk a lot about how seniors built this province, and it is always kind of in the past tense. I wouldn't blame you if you found that somewhat offensive, because seniors are living in the now, seniors in the present tense are

builders of this province. Seniors are very involved in their community. They are volunteering, they are supporting their friends and neighbours, supporting local businesses, doing everything a great citizen should do." The Government of Alberta has supported the development of 12,000 affordable housing units for homeless and lower-income Albertans since 2007 through capital grant funding in 62 communities. Sorenson said the provincial and federal governments are committed to working together to support Canadian families and communities. "It takes the efforts of many and partnerships at all levels to get the job done. It is a pleasure on behalf of the federal government to be involved in this project that is going to bring about new housing, affordable housing, quality housing, safe housing to Camrose." Lindstrand said the Camrose and Area Lodge Authority will work together with The Bethany Group, which manages Rosealta, to make the expansion project as seamless as possible. "We certainly don't want it to be a burden on anyone. It is a great opportunity but we also have the challenge of making it happen without any disruption to the lives of Rosealta residents."

Roads and transportation top priority with residents By Dan Jensen

Roads and streets, public transit and transportation in general are the topics most on the mind of Camrose residents according to a citizen satisfaction syndicated survey conducted this past spring by Isos Reid. "Thirty one per cent of respondents mentioned transportation as the top issue," said City manager Damian Herle in presenting the survey results to Camrose City council Sept. 3. "That was up 25 per cent in a similar survey conducted in 2011." Nineteen per cent of respondents mentioned taxation and municipal government spending as the top-ofmind concern, while 13 per cent said their top concern was municipal government services. Another 13 per cent said the top issue was parks, recreation and cultural facilities or programs. Ninety eight per cent of respondents said the overall quality of life was good or very good, up from the 97 per cent of respondents who said the same thing in a survey done in 2011. Seventeen per cent said the quality of

life has improved over the last three years, compared to 67 per cent who said it has stayed the same and 11 per cent who said it has worsened. Economic development was cited by 25 per cent of respondents for the improvement in quality of life, while more activities and things to do was cited by 23 per cent of respondents. Negative mentions of staff and City council were seen by 35 per cent of residents as the reason the quality of life has declined. Twenty one per cent of respondents said the reason was growth and development and 12 per cent said it was the condition of roads and streets. Seventy nine per cent of survey respondents said they were very or somewhat satisfied with municipal government, including council and administration as a whole. Eighty nine per cent said they were very or somewhat satisfied with City services overall, down from 93 per cent in 2011. Seventy four per cent said they were very or somewhat satisfied with communication with residents, and 74 per cent said they were very or somewhat satisfied with land use and

community planning. Sixty eight per cent said they were very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with recycling and garbage services. Seventy three per cent of respondents said they felt they were receiving very good value or fairly good value for their tax dollar, compared to 25 per cent who said they were receiving poor value. Forty one per cent of respondents said they would support increased taxes to enhance or expand services, or maintain services at the current levels. Twenty eight per cent said they would like to cut services to maintain the current tax level and 12 per cent said they would like to cut services to reduce taxes. Seventeen per cent of respondents said they would like to have more information on municipal taxes, property taxes and the budget, while 13 per cent said they would like to have more information on community planning, land use and new developments. Fifty two per cent indicated that the newspaper was their preferred communication channel, 20 per cent said it was mail, 14 per

cent said it was newsletters, pamphlets or flyers, and 11 per cent said it was the City website. Eighty nine per cent said the City has been very or somewhat successful in safeguarding and strengthening the City's unique environment. Eighty five per cent said the City has been very or somewhat successful in focusing on delivering core services to residents. Eighty three per cent said the City has been very successful or somewhat successful in working with other organizations to improve quality and access to services and quality of life. Eighty nine per cent of respondents said the City has done a very good job or a somewhat good job in managing the water treatment and sewage treatment facilities. Eighty three per cent said the City has done a very good job or somewhat good job in managing recreation facilities such as the public pools and ice rinks. Eighty two per cent of resondents said the condution of the water treatment facilities are in excellent or good condition, compared to 71 per cent who said the

same thing about the recreational facilities and 51 per cent who said the same thing about the roads. Thirty one per cent ranked roads as the top infrastructure priorities, compared to 14 per cent who said the water treatment facilities, 28 per cent who said local public transit systems, three per cent who said sewage treatment facilities and 20 per cent who said recreation facilities such as public pools and ice rinks. The survey involved 300 telephone interviews conducted with a randomly selected representative sample of Camrose residents aged 18 years or older. The final data was weighted to ensure the age/gender distribution reflected that of the actual population in Camrose according to the most recent census data. The results were tracked and reported against past surveys to understand how attitudes and priorities have changed and assess the City's progress in addressing key issues.

Sagan stars in Camrose, but Dennis wins Tour of Alberta By Murray Green

Although Peter Sagan of Slovakia was the star of the Stage 1 Camrose finish of the Tour of Alberta bike tour, it was Australian Rohan Dennis of Team Garmin-Sharp who captured the inaugural overall title on Sept. 8. Even before the champion crossed the finish line,

there was talk about next year. "The feedback that I received in Camrose and at the other stages I attended was incredibly positive towards the event. People were astonished at the magnitude of the event itself, the logistics required to coordinate the event, the incredible skill of the riders and the drama of the race and strategy of the teams," said local organizer Todd Markowsky. "The committee received countless accolades and thankyous for helping bring this to Camrose and we are humbled by that." The committee will be meeting shortly to discuss the recent tour. "I cannot speak for all on the committee as we have a couple of more wrap up meetings to attend, but through conversation they were extremely satisfied with the event and the result of all of their hard work," said Todd. "I personally would consider hosting the event in the future with continued support from the City of Camrose and the local business community. I am passionate about the sport of cycling and feel it has a bright future in North America." Dennis finished the six-day stage race with an aggregate time of 17 hours, 45 minutes and 40 seconds. American Brent Bookwalter of BMC Racing finished second and Italian Damiano Caruso of Cannondale Pro Cycling rounded out the top three. Slovakia's Sagan won the prologue in Edmonton, Stage 1 in Camrose and the final stage. "I came into this race in pretty good form," said the 23-year-old Dennis. "I really didn't know how it would play out throughout the week. I guess it played out well. So, I'm a little surprised. It's the biggest win of my pro career." It was Dennis' first major stage race victory. He took the overall lead on Stage 3 Friday into Drumheller. He held off the top racers on the hilly stage to Black Diamond and maintained his lead all the way into Calgary on the final day. "Some of the positives for the stage in Camrose are a world-wide exposure to the community through the television audience, eco-

"The race organizers also commented on the great job that Camrose did securing the road closure and making the circuit in Camrose a safe one for the athletes." As expected, Sagan was a big threat the entire race and entered the race as overall favorite until he lost the race lead in the cross winds of rural Alberta. Sagan, who has won more races than anyone on the international professional circuit this year, won three stages. Late last month, he had won four stages at the USA Pro Challenge. "This was a very good race for its first year. The crowds were very big and enthusiastic," Sagan said. The 900-kilometre race was greeted with large flagwaving crowds throughout the six days in Alberta. "This was a very nice race," said 2011 Tour de France winner Cadel Evans. "The weather was great. The crowds were large and enthusiastic. The racing was actually quite good. For a first year event, it was incredibly well organized. We'll see, but, sure, I'd like to come back next year." Some fine tuning could be done for next time. "We are meeting to evaluate and wrap up this event and we will discuss some of these things at that time," said Todd. "I think that as a committee we would agree that an increased time frame to prepare for the event and a more structured

frame work from the overall organizers regarding sponsorship opportunities would be helpful. As this was the first time ever organizing this event in Canada everyone learned a lot about what is required to pull something like this together. The next time the event happens people in the province generally will have a better idea of what this event is and therefore the awareness of the public will be greater. That was one of our biggest challenges as a committee, to convince people of the caliber of this event and the world class level of the athletes that were participating." After watching the average speed of 50 to 55 kmph and the top mark of about 73 kmph, people were convinced it was a professional event. "We are extremely impressed with the support that we received from business sponsors in the community, the support of City council, public works, Camrose Police Service, Camrose Fire Department and civic employees," added Todd. "The event was also successful because of the volunteers. We had over 300 people volunteer for the Camrose stage. It was an honor for Camrose to be chosen as the first finishing stage in the inaugural Tour of Alberta and we are proud to have had this opportunity. I wish to thank all of my committee members who worked tirelessly as volunteers to make this event a huge success."

Alberta Voices launches fracking series Submitted by Alberta Voices

University of Alberta students Hans Asfeldt and Alison Bortolon spent the summer digging for missing parts of the discussion on hydraulic fracturing in Alberta. As video journalists for the AlbertaVoices project, Hans and Alison sought to investigate the discrepancy between the perspectives of industry and government and the experiences of Alberta landowners. Their travels brought them face to face with farmers, operators, retirees and people of all kinds who have been impacted by oil and gas activity. Last fall, Hans researched the impacts of hydraulic fracturing on water, while Alison produced a short documentary based on Responsibility for the Land: Conversations on Fracking in Alberta, a conference hosted in Camrose at the University of Alberta, Augustana campus. This past summer, the two young students combined their skills and set out to interview Albertans and put their stories into film. With their summer work coming to a close, AlbertaVoices presents a multipart series of short films on fracking in Alberta. The series provides an avenue through which Albertans can participate in the public discussion of oil and gas development. It is the hope of AlbertaVoices that sharing these stories will help replace controversy with clarity and encourage responsible, informed decisions that will lead to a future we all hope for. Hans and Alison have worked hard to get the project off the ground, but it is the hospitality and honesty of Albertans themselves that has brought AlbertaVoices forward. The Smith Clinic welcomed Dr. Amber Jorgensen as its newest full-time family physician Sept. 3. Dr. Jorgensen is accepting new patients of all ages, male and female, who do not currently have a family physician practicing in Camrose or are new to the area. "My spots for September are mostly full but we plan on opening new spots on Monday mornings as they become available," said Dr. Jorgensen. "If people are looking to fill those spots that is when they should call." As well as seeing patients at the Smith Clinic, Dr. Jorgensen will be taking a regular shift in the emergency department at St. Mary's Hospital and working in maternity. "I am excited about coming here as it will give me

a chance to do a little bit of everything," she said. Dr. Jorgensen received her formal medical training in Calgary before moving to Red Deer where she completed two years of residency. "I have spent a lot of time seeing patients in multiple rural towns in Alberta," she said. "I know there are a lot of people out there that don't have a family doctor." Dr. Jorgensen feels one of the biggest challenges facing family doctors is being able to handle all the responsibilities that come with the job while still being able to find time for friends and family. "It is a busy life but every day is different," she said. "You never know who is going to walk through the door. You are always meeting new people and there is always something new to learn."

Collision claims life of woman on Highway 13 On Sept. 10, at approximately 8:30 a.m., the Killam/Forestburg RCMP detachment, along with Emergency Medical Services, responded to a fatal single motor vehicle collision involving a motorcycle on Highway 13 near the Village of Strome. The sole occupant of the motorcycle died as a result of the collision. Investigation revealed that the driver had been travelling eastbound on the highway when the motorcycle left the highway near a curve in the road. The driver had been wearing a helmet at the time. Speed and alcohol do not appear to have been factors in this collision.

Dr. Jorgensen and her fiancee, a farmer in the Hardisty area, plan to find a home in Camrose. "I grew up in the Olds area, so Camrose is actually bigger than any place I have stayed before," she said. "The trail system is really nice and I hear there are some great trails for cross-country skiing." Dr. Jorgensen feels it is good for people to be involved in their own health care by looking up conditions and symptoms on the Internet, but warns that not all the information that is found there is completely accurate. "I think it is difficult for some patients to know what information on the Internet is reliable and what information is not," she said. "A family physician can help people to decide which information

they can rely on and which information they should be taking with a grain of salt. I don't think it is necessarily a bad thing for people to say to me they have done some research and give their opinions, but ultimately there are a lot of different things that go into making a diagnosis." The Primary Care Network and physician attraction and retention committee has made great strides in the past few years in bringing new doctors like Dr. Jorgensen to Camrose. "I met with Stacey Strilchuk from the PCN initially and from there was put into contact with the two clinics," said Dr. Jorgensen. Doctor Retention Committee searching for more physicians By Murray Green

The Primary Care Network and physician attraction and retention committee has made great strides in bringing more doctors to Camrose in the past. PCN executive director Stacey Strilchuk and committee chair Dr. Val Smith briefed Camrose County council on the importance of the work that has been done in the past and what it means for the future of the area. "There are three primary care clinics serving the City and County of Camrose – the Smith Clinic, Gemini Health Centre and Bashaw Medical Clinic," said Stacey. "There is also a walk-in clinic owned and operated by the Smith Clinic." A number of primary care health concerns are also addressed at St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose within their emergency department. "Of the 33 family doctors we have, only one or two of the physicians are currently accepting new patients and we also have a significant number of doctors that are preparing for retirement," informed Stacey. "When patients show up in emergency looking for a family doctor, we know the system is failing," said Dr. Smith. "Sometimes they don't have access to primary care. We need more emphasis on community care and not rely on the hospital for that. The reality is that we are short physicians. Physician and retention is ongoing. We can't just say we have enough and we are done. It is an ongoing effort." A collaborative team approach is one of the best ways to involve the community in attracting family doctors.

"Community participation demonstrates to candidates that more than just the hospital or clinic wants their services. It demonstrates that the community cares enough about local health care to actually be a part of its success," added Stacey. "We want to include the entire family because we know it is a family decision." The Camrose and Area Physician Attraction and Retention Committee was established to support physician recruitment activities within the City and County of Camrose. "There are not enough Canadian trained family physicians and specialists to recruit, therefore the committee must seek out foreign trained physicians that may be interested in practicing in our communities," added Stacey. "We tailor our tours and activities based on the family needs in order to appeal to the family. Often, it is the spouse who has the final say in where they want to locate to." It can take up a year or more to recruit a foreign trained physician to our community. The retention of that physician recruit and his/her family is an ongoing responsibility for the committee. It is also very competitive to recruit a doctor that visits several communities to decide where they should set up a business, or purchase a home. "To date we have secured two new physician recruits and have had a number of constructive physician pre-recruitment visits. Dollars to date have been used to augment costs related to pre-recruitment visits, follow up and retention projects," explained Stacey. The committee has

been set up for successful outcomes, but it has taken time to educate committee members, engage communities and attract potential recruits. "Retention is also very important. We want to make sure they are happy to retain them for a long time," Stacey said. "Often if the doctor is overworked they want to leave. They really need to know what to expect," said Dr. Smith. Councillor Vern Peterson expressed his concern about how frustrating it is when doctors leave and patients have to find another doctor when other doctors don't accept new patients. Dr. Smith explained the committee is trying to attract doctors based on what load they can perform in the big picture, rather than the number of doctors we need. "We need to have services provided and how many doctors it takes to fill that is hard to answer. We have to approach it that way to be more successful," she said. Physicians have a major impact on the economy of the cities and towns where they practice medicine. It can led to jobs created by the physician as an employer, related jobs in the community and the impact of the physicians' family spending, which includes education, housing, retail and entertainment expenses. Councillor Glen Nelson made a motion to refer a request for funding by the committee to the budget process. The committee meets on the third Thursday of every month. Marrisa Adams entered the Miss Canada Globe contest on a whim. "My thought was if I get in, I get in. Then I received a phone call saying that I was in. In February, I had an interview and made the top 90 in Canada. Then on Aug. 20 I went to Toronto for regionals. We had to learn how to walk to model swimwear and evening gowns. That is where they gave me the title of Miss Central Alberta," explained the 19-year-old from Camrose. The contest then moved on to a national scale with 60 contestants. "Regionals were rehearsals for the nationals and some just didn't make it. We stayed up late learning routines from 7 a.m. to sometimes 3 a.m. the next day. We had to learn dances, an opening number, our different walks and make appearances with our titles," said Marrisa. "We had three days to prepare and nationals were a lot more fun." Many Camrosians are already aware that each year Augustana selects a theme which becomes a point of focus for many campus events. The events connected with the theme include plays staged by the Drama Department, concerts, movie nights, teachins, lecture series and, of course, guest speakers Inevitably, subjects pertain to present concerns. For instance, in 2006, at the time of the SARS crisis, the theme was Pandemic, Plagues and Viruses. In the following year, the committee selected Boom and Bust as theme, fortuitously anticipating the economic collapse of 2008. That year, we were asked to reflect on the production, distribution, and preparation of food in our globalized world as the Augustana theme was From Field to Fork. This particular focus had some interesting and enduring consequences. It got Augustana involved in many aspects of local food production. The movement was so successful that five years later, the campus cafeteria sources as much food as it can from the surrounding area and serves at least one completely local meal a month. This is a testament of the impact a theme can have on our day-to-day lives. In 2009, the topic was Dissent, a central and defining feature of intellectual life and closely connected to the university and its processes. Dissent has also, and continues to be, a critical factor in political, religious, social, scientific and cultural realms and is thus integral to the shaping of the world in which we live. The next year was organized around centennial celebrations, as this was the 100th anniversary of the founding in Camrose of the institution now known as Augustana. This celebratory introspection was followed by the controversial Living with Our Selves: Conversations on Sex, Gender and Sexuality. As part of this, Augustana offered a “human library” where people (human books) offered their own stories. Last year, the committee chose to focus on hope and human agency, and chose Resilience as the theme.

The presentation by environmentalist, author and activist Bill McKibben, inspired the start of Camrose’s own 350.org chapter. This year we tackle “Progress.” The term progress” initially conjures positive images. Aren’t we all striving to progress, to get ahead, and better ourselves? However, progress does not always translate into improvements. As one committee member argued, “in economic terms, progress might be equated with growth: as long as inflation continues at a healthy (but not excessive) pace, the stock market indices trend upwards, income and profits increase from year to year, and house prices continue to rise, then all is well.” However, "in the face of impending environmental collapse, shouldn’t we replace the concept of progress, as a goal for our society, by a concept such as the steady-state economy?” How should we as a society define and address progress? As the theme’s website suggests, in some cases, the concept can be dealt with directly and positively, while others may use the term ironically. “Progress” can in fact be misleading and illusory - we should ask if the progress is sustainable, what dangers it might hold, what consequences we might have failed to predict, or if its benefits are worth the cost? Engaging with the theme from a variety of perspectives will ensure that the many dimensions of progress are explored and debated. This year, the theme includes presentations from nearly all of the academic disciplines. As well, guest speakers will be invited, including Canadian intellectual historian Douglas Francis, Professor and Senior Research Office of the National Institute of Nanotechnology, Jillian Buriak, and Kristian Harpviken, Director of the Peace Research Institute. Horst Schreiber’s letter on Marketing freedom (Aug. 27) is an amusement to behold. No one should have to "wonder why this type of program is limited to farmers." It is not, not at all. The laws that allow one to sell what one produces, one’s own property, at whatever agreed upon price to whomever one wishes are already "spread over the whole economy." Such (capitalist) agreements

between willing buyers and willing sellers are the bedrock of our free society and indeed "a boom for Canada." Always have been. One wonders if many of those who opposed removing the Wheat Board’s monopoly on the sale of wheat and barley for export had such deficits in understanding; it would help account for why they insisted farmers should not have marketing freedom if they thought no one else in society possessed such freedom. It is false of Schreiber to say "farmers never got to vote on whether they wanted this ‘freedom’." They had at least one vote on the matter and a majority indicated they did not want to maintain the status quo monopoly situation. He says "I’m sure there are Lawyers and Accountants who would love the independence of setting their own rates...." Unless he is referring to lawyers and accountants hired by the firm "Lawyers and Accoun-

tants," surely he should know lawyers and accountants do set their own rates. It is considered part of professionalism. They like most people in our society who are not rigidly controlled by unions voluntarily agree with whomever is purchasing their work on what they will be paid for it. Schreiber complains: "...why can’t I buy a grain bin directly from Meridian in Camrose. Why must I go to a dealer?" The reason is because Meridian, unlike farmers who were required by law to sell certain of their products only to the Wheat Board, do have marketing freedom. They have chosen to have retailers buy and sell their products. There is no law that says they cannot sell directly to Horst. It is good that he is able to recognize virtues of economic freedom but rather strange he does not know that virtually everyone in Canada already had it, except farmers. Douglas Hendrickson, Camrose

All across our large riding families are adjusting to the new daily routines of going back to school. I have been spending a great deal of time reviewing the details of the efforts our Conservative government has made to be of assistance to hard working Canadians raising their families. Safeguarding financial prosperity starts with strong Canadian families. Our government is determined to continue to keep taxes low for Canadian families. The facts and figures show clearly that the average family of four now receives more than $3,200 in extra tax savings, and the federal tax burden for all Canadians is now the lowest it has been in half a century. The Children’s Arts and Fitness Tax Credits are truly helping Canadian families. These tax credits also work as incentives to get our youngest generation enrolled in various arts and fitness programs. Families can claim a 15 per cent nonrefundable tax credit on an amount up to $500 per child per credit on their income tax and benefit returns. According to the 2012 Tax Expenditures and Evaluations publication, the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit provided an estimated $120 million to hard-working families in 2012 alone.

Our First-Time Home Buyers’ Tax Credit is a big help to families and helps make the transition into home ownership more affordable. Taxpayers, who bought their first home this year, may be eligible to claim a 15 per cent non-refundable tax credit on an amount of $5,000 on their income tax and benefit return. In its first two years alone, more than 550,000 Canadians claimed the First-Time Home Buyers’ Tax Credit, which resulted in over $2.5 billion claimed. The Family Caregiver Tax Credit is available to help Canadians cope with the added responsibilities of caring for disabled or ill parents or relatives. It provides a 15 per cent non-refundable tax credit on an amount of $2,040 to caregivers of dependent relatives. And finally, the Tax-

Free Savings Account (TFSA) allows Canadians, aged 18 or over, to set money aside tax-free. Each calendar year, we can contribute up to $5,500 to our TFSA. Miss Canada Globe Productions was founded in May 2000 to represent Canada at various international pageants and provide young ladies with an opportunity to make their mark in today’s society. Marrisa used her talents to win over the judges. "I won the karaoke contest with "Walking on Sunshine" and was named Karaoke Queen. For the talent show I recited "Jabberwocky" by Lewis Carroll. I picked that poem because I had it memorized from my Camrose Composite High School drama class. I was in vocal jazz, the chamber choir and in choir class. I love singing. I was going to sing for my talent, but I was too scared." Marrisa made it to the top 10 before the final five were selected. "They don't tell you where you finished. All I know is that I didn't make the top five. I did receive the People's Choice award with the most online votes, so it could have been close." With her central Alberta title (she finished ahead of Miss Teen Alberta), she has to perform two appearances a month. "I have to find functions, events or a place to make the appearance. On Sept. 9, I went to a camp that I used to work at to help after it was hit by high winds and a storm. About 20 teepees were knocked down," said Marrisa. "I can make the appearances anywhere such as being in the parade, store openings or volunteer." The national event helps teens gain the confidence and poise that can be applied to personal lives and careers in order to advance in today’s competitive society. "Getting on stage every day gives you confidence. I was nervous going on the catwalk for the first time, but after awhile I felt pretty confident. As first I was worried what these girls were going to be like, but they were just like me." Miss Canada Globe contestants are ambassadors for their Canadian communities, appearing to assist local charities and non-profit fundraisers, and serving as role models for today's youth and visiting the sick. "We became like sisters and we were happy with whoever won," she said. "Just receiving the central Alberta title helps me to become a role model. I really love children and I like helping them. I work as a nanny and I just want to work around children." The top five have to make international appearances. "In a way, I'm glad I'm not tied down to that for the next three years," said Marrissa. "My passion is helping children and the handicapped." Call for Grant Applications The Battle River Community Foundation is now receiving applications for grants from the Community Fund and the Field of Interest Funds. Grants are made to organizations operating in east-central Alberta that are recognized as qualified donees by the Canada Revenue Agency. This includes registered charitable organizations and municipalities. Organizations seeking funds must demonstrate a strong and committed volunteer board of directors, fiscal responsibility, and effective management of resources. Projects that impact the greatest number of individuals possible with a modest investment of funds are preferred. Camrose Police Service Report September 13

At 8:45 a.m. emergency services responded to a collision on 48 Avenue and 49 Street. A boy on a bicycle attempted to cross 49 Street and as he just entered the road a car that had been stopped at the stop sign proceeded to turn onto 48 Avenue. The 81-year-old man driving the car did not see the boy and his friend at the intersection and hit one of them. The boy and his bicycle were knocked over and the car continued until the driver was alerted to stop. The boy was pinned under the rear portion of the vehicle. A city employee travelling west watched the event unfold and quickly retrieved a large hydraulic jack from his truck and jacked the car up to relieve pressure on the boy. The boy was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital

where he is being treated for his injuries. The investigation into this matter is continuing. Police conducted a traffic stop and noted the man operating the motor vehicle to be under the influence of alcohol. Police arrested the 35-year-old man and brought him back to the police service where he provided two samples into an approved instrument with readings of 140mg% and 130mg%. Police arrested a 42-yearold man for outstanding warrants out of Redwater, Alberta. During a Check-Stop police spoke with a 23-yearold man who was operating a motor vehicle. Police noted a strong odour of cannabis marihuana coming from the vehicle. The man was arrested under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

A search of the vehicle located a small quantity of cannabis marihuana. The man was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance. September 12

At 2:20 a.m. police stopped a vehicle that had been speeding eastbound along 48 Avenue. The driver showed signs of being under the influence of alcohol and failed a road side test. The driver was arrested and provided samples of his breath that were over the legal limit. A 28-year-old Calgary man has been charged with impaired driving, driving with a blood alcohol level over 80 mg% and speeding. September 11

Police are investigating a fraud which occurred at a grocery store, when a customer appears to deliberately confuse the cashier by requesting change for some

large bill denominations then misrepresenting the amount of money he actually provided and made off with more money then he initially provided. Police charged a 72-yearold driver after he failed to stop at a stop sign resulting in a collision with a pedestrian. The pedestrian suffered minor injuries. A 41-year-old man was issued with a Public Intoxication ticket after he was found stumbling around a downtown motel and needed some assistance getting home. September 9

Two parked vehicles were reported entered some time over the weekend and a radar detector and a wallet were stolen. September 8

Two RV owners advised their RV’s had been broken

into while it was parked in a storage compound. A generator was stolen from one of the trailers. The investigation is continuing. Police received a call regarding a possible impaired driver. The vehicle was located at the gas pumps of a convenience store. The 49-year-old driver displayed signs of intoxication and was arrested. She provided breath samples resulting in readings three time over the legal limit. The woman was charged with Impaired Care or Control, Care or Control While Over .08 and Unlawful Conveyance of liquor. A theft was reported after a woman discovered a few items missing from her vehicle. A vehicle owner reported a mischief after discovering someone had smashed out a window in his truck.

BRCF presents grant to Camrose Open Door

Battle River Community Foundation director Wayne Throndson presented a cheque to Randal Nickel, executive director of the Camrose Open Door Association.

The Battle River Community Foundation has granted $3,600 to the Camrose Open Door Association. The grant is from the Community Fund and will assist with program support for housing services. This program has eight short term beds and four transitional apartments for youth who find themselves at risk. Youth involved in this program also receive life skills development. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects, such as this, in East Central Alberta which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds is kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Some grant funding is also made available by generous donors who make annual gifts to the Battle River Community Foundation. Since it was founded in 1995 the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $1,700,000 to support important local initiatives and organizations such as the Camrose Open Door Association.

Eileen Maude Hartschen It is with great sadness that the family of Eileen announces her passing at the age of 89 after a brief battle with cancer. Eileen was born and raised in Barrhead, AB. After marrying Roy in 1949, they moved to the family farm in Kingman. In 1962, they moved to Sherwood Park where she lived in the same home for 51 years. Roy and Eileen’s house was always welcoming and became a second home to many. Eileen was a great lover of music and had a lifelong passion for photography. She always had a positive outlook in life with a kind word for everyone. She will be sadly missed by all who were lucky enough to know her. She will be lovingly remembered by her brother Wesley; daughter Dianne (Allan); son Danny (Sherry), Jack (Marcy); grandchildren Alicia and Melanie; greatgrandchildren Avaya and Xavier; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Eileen was predeceased by her husband Roy; granddaughter Jennifer; brothers Doug, Roy, Steve and Alex; and sisters Cecile and Ethel. A celebration of life was held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, September 13, 2013 at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Sherwood Park. Interment will take place at Kingman Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Murray Roy of Camrose passed away peacefully on September 4, 2013 at the age of 78. Murray was born on a farm near Tisdale, Saskatchewan on April 23, 1935. He was the fifth of seven children born to Ernest and Ruby Roy. In 1961, he married Carol Lenzen, and later they were blessed with a daughter Charlene and a son Stephen. Murray began his career managing lumberyards in Saskatchewan. He spent a few years selling building supplies and then life insurance. In 1969, the family moved to Alberta where he worked as a steam engineer in the pulp mill in Hinton, as well as working as a cabinetmaker for a couple of years. In 1977, Murray and his family moved to Camrose where he fulfilled his dream of owning his own cabinetry business. Following that, he was the maintenance supervisor for the Camrose School District where he made use of the wide variety of skills he had acquired. In retirement, Murray volunteered many hours of his time to ReStore, Camrose Railway Museum, Messiah Lutheran Church and anyone who needed help. Murray’s interests and hobbies included hockey, baseball, trains, reading, history, politics, cooking and camping. His greatest passion was to spend time with people. Murray was predeceased by his brother Gerald (Carole) and his sister Della (Bill) Woolsey. He is survived by his wife Carol; daughter Charlene (Mel) Reimer; son Stephen (Jessica); four grandsons Dane and Darnell Reimer, Adam and Julian Roy; and four brothers Denis (Pearl), Elmer (Marilyn), Neil (Lucille) and Roger (Shirley). A funeral service was held September 9, 2013 at Messiah Lutheran Church with Diaconal Minister Bev Swanson officiating. Dorothy Thompson Dorothy Agnes Thompson of Camrose, formerly of Kelsey, passed away on Sunday, September 8, 2013 at the age of 85 years. Dorothy “Dot” Agnes Thompson was born on August 31, 1928 in Camrose, AB to Blake and Agnes Dingman. She grew up on a farm in the Albury District southeast of Camrose, along with her sister Daisy and brother Harold. As a girl, Dot’s favorite “chore” was riding horseback to bring in the cattle, late every afternoon. She attended Albury School for Grades 1 to 9, and went to Camrose for high school. After high school, Dot supervised students at East Bittern Lake and Norbo Schools. In 1947, Dot married Les Thompson and they farmed together in the Albury/Kelsey district until 1993, when they retired and moved to Camrose. Dot was predeceased by her husband Les; sister Daisy; brother Harold; and son-in-law Lorne Sawden. Dot loved her family, farming, and all of nature. Some of her favorite times were spent outdoors, whether gardening, walking or helping with the harvest – she loved the fall season. She could always be counted on to help others when needed and was involved in the community in so many ways. Dot had a generous spirit and her endless love is treasured by her family. Steve Sawchuk Mr. Steve Sawchuk of Camrose passed away on Sunday, September 8, 2013 at the age of 81 years. Steve was brought into the world at the Innisfree family farm on October 30, 1931. He spent his childhood years growing up on the farm near Minburn. After graduating, work led him north to Manning, where he met his wife Francis Robertson. Steve and Francis were married within a year, and went on to start a family with the births of sons Bradley and Terrence. Together they moved and settled in Vegreville, where they expanded their family with the addition of sons Douglas, Brent and Cameron. Throughout his years, Steve was always very active in golf, curling and community clubs. He was employed by Northwestern Utilities for 36 years in Vegreville, Lamont and Camrose. After retiring, Steve and Francis were able to spend 23 enjoyable winters in Yuma, Arizona. There, Steve became quite well-known as a champion court shuffler, and the couple met many lifelong friends. Steve will always be remembered for his love of the outdoors and the cherished memories made in the sunshine – playing and watching sports, gardening, travelling and enjoying his grandchildren. Steve will be greatly missed by his loving wife Francis; five sons Bradley (Erma), Terrence (Maureen), Douglas (Susan), Brent (Mary Lou) and Cameron (Heather); 16 grandchildren; 11 greatgrandchildren; and two sisters Kay Speirs and Ruth (Dennis) Lever. Greg Wood is seeking a seat on the next Camrose City council. A chartered accountant with more than 20 years of experience in auditing municipalities, Wood was elected to council in the last election in 2010. He resigned earlier this year after growing frustrated with the way business was being conducted. "I don't regret my decision to resign, said Wood. "I do regret that I didn't voice my concerns louder and sooner." Wood knew he had had enough when council made the decision to proceed with the new City Hall without having what he felt was the proper discussion on how the project would affect City finances. "We had discussed City Hall over a period of six years, but it was all theoretical," said Wood. "It was always yes in theory it is a good idea, but we never had the real numbers until what I call Black Monday, and then we just didn't discuss them. We knew the provincial government was cutting grants but we didn't go back and look at the other choices we had, like doing a rebuild on part of a building and spending $10 million instead of $18 million." Wood was concerned about the attitude council had with regard to spending. "We were oblivious to the fact that every level of government is struggling with spending and debt issues.

Rather than addressing those issues we kept going to the taxpayers and asking for more. We spent three years making off the cuff remarks about the province downloading problems to municipalities and not giving us the funding. That might have been the reality of it, but that is not going to change. We need to have a different attitude on how we spend." Wood said while the City is in a decent financial position at this point with its reserves, it can't take on any more debt without directly affecting the tax base. "The challenge is going to be that when we have to take on more debt – and that is not an if but a when – it is going to hit our tax base and it will cause our taxes to escalate. Part of the reason is that we have used 97 per cent of our municipal sustainability initiative money on just two projects, the performing arts centre and the City Hall. Our major source

of capital money is tied up now until partway through 2016, so if we have any unexpected expenditures or any major projects that we want to do we either can't do them or we have to borrow, something that will increase our taxes." Wood was happy with the way the decision was handled on the performing arts centre. "We discussed it and went over it, and it was a project that was easier to digest because there were multiple sources of funding. It was an investment in the community because the university is certainly one of the major partners. The City Hall was more of a luxury purchase. Given the economic conditions it just needed a more thorough review once we had the final numbers." Talking to the other candidates in the election, Wood senses there is a genuine desire to tackle some of the more difficult issues. "I think we are very fortunate that Norm Mayer has stepped forward to let his name stand," he said. "I can't think of a more qualified person at this point to help navigate us out of some of the issues that we are going to have going forward." Wood served as City council representative on the Camrose Performing Arts Centre and Municipal Planning committees, both of which he chaired. He also served on the landfill and social housing committees.

Berg would be voice for arts community Council By Dan Jensen

Gordon Berg would be a voice for the arts community if elected to City council Oct. 21. “We have a lot of great arts organizations in this community," said Berg. "We need to pay more attention to what they are doing." Berg believes the Bailey Theatre and the new performing arts centre each have a vital role to play. “The Bailey is an absolutely beautiful facility that should be utilized more by all the dance and drama groups,” he said, “and the new performing arts centre is already starting to book shows. Why there are negative thoughts about either one of them I don’t know.” Berg said arts are a very important piece of the makeup of Camrose, just as they were in the early 1900s. “The facilities that were built then were cultural facilities. Meeting places and entertainment centres where people could go to watch a show or dance. The Bailey Theatre was one of the first things that was built." Berg would like to see the new City council do more

forward thinking on projects like the water treatment plant, establish a joint City/ county industrial park and revisit the transportation study that was done a few years ago. “The number of students and seniors who would use the bus system is increasing,” he said. Berg would also like to see the City lobby the provincial government to have counties share pipeline and powerline tax revenues with their urban counterparts.

Unlike others in the campaign, Berg is a backer of the new City Hall project. “If it turns out that it is too big for what we need now we can always rent out some of the space,” he said. Berg is reminded of the beauty of Camrose every time he takes his dog out for a walk on the City trail system. “We have a wonderful trail and parks system and a beautiful City,” he said. Berg received his junior and senior high school education in Camrose. “You could say my political career started in Grade 9 when I ran for president of the junior high school students’ union,” he said. In the mid 1960s Berg enrolled at Mount Royal College in Calgary, where he studied physical education. After a period in which he worked for Eatons and Sunbeam, he went to York University in Toronto, where he continued his post secondary studies. From 1972 to 1980 he was employed in the area of parks and recreation in the towns of Drumheller, Slave Lake and the County of

Leduc. He served as chair of the Alberta Recreation and Partks Association convention at Jasper Park Lodge, and was chair of the recreation board in the City of Leduc. It was while he was in Leduc that he was offered the opportunity to become an agent for SunLife Canada. “I spent 10 years as the Leduc agent before moving to Camrose, where I was the same,” he said. Outside of work, Berg was chair of St. David’s United Church in Leduc, and involved in the start up of the Leduc children’s theatre organization. After moving to Camrose he helped his daughter, Cathie (Johnson) establish AboutTime Productions and became involved with the Bailey Theatre. Berg believes he has a solid understanding of how municipal government works and the passion that is required to be a good representative of the citizens. “I just want to serve the community in the best way I can,” he said.

Pat Mader Mundel sees Camrose as a thriving community that can be more vibrant and well-served by a caring, productive and service oriented City council and staff working alongside committed residents. "Obviously we are going in the right direction," said Mundel, who will be seeking election to Camrose City council Oct. 21. "I volunteered at the Tour of Alberta as a gatekeeper at the VIP tent where I heard many people comment on what a beautiful City Camrose is and how much they enjoy the vibrant downtown. They knew about the recreation centre, the performing arts centre and the historic downtown." Mader Mundel feels it is very important to maximize current City assets. "Being a good steward of taxpayer dollars means building on the significant capital investments we have made in our sports and arts facilities. No matter what you think about whether these should have been built or not they are here. We need to ask how they can create greater economic benefits." Mader Mundel would like to see the new council follow through on ideas from reports and entrepreneurs. "For example, council could investigate opportunities to promote things like a summer theatre festival for Destination Tourism. We have a walkable core with a vibrant downtown between our theatres, and in talking with arts professionals in the province and recently with the minister of arts and

culture, they feel we are well positioned for initiatives like this. Look what Rosebud has done and we have so much more going for us in terms of where we would be beginning." Mader Mundel said it is vital to promote Camrose as a shopping destination. "We really have become a regional centre. We didn't have the facilities to consider ourselves a convention centre in the past but we do now." An area in which Mader Mundel has a strong interest is thriving and safe neighbourhoods. "I offered walking tours to elderly residents who moved into the 70-unit condominium facility in the Augustana area. That was after someone asked me if it was safe to walk in the neighbourhood. Together we toured back yards, visited the Augustana campus and library, attended concerns, and walked downtown to learn more about Main Street shopping, coffee shops and the library." Mader Mundel believes

since each neighbourhood has its unique challenges and strengths it is important to ensure that everyone has a collective say in what happens in his or her area. "When people get together and bring their views to the table, a sense of community and belonging grows. I talked with my own neighbours when an unsuitable re-zoning application was made and together we learned, researched, protected our park, and developed a vision for the future of our neighbourbood that resulted in Camrose's first ever residential area redevelopment plan. Owners and home builders can gain from the certainty of knowing what can be developed and how to evaluate the opportunities and their future profits." Mader Mundel said she is interested in economic development that serves multiple goals. "We need to really build on our agricultural roots for value added processing industries. We also need to ensure that there are adequate commercial and industrial development parcels available." In terms of financial responsibility, Mader Mundel said council's priority has to be to maintain competitive tax rates in the context of like-sized communities. "We need to find a balance between prudent decision making and appropriate tax rates while providing the amenities and services that young families and middle aged folks and the elderly look for when they choose to come to Camrose. We have seen steady growth averag-

ing two per cent over the last number of years and remain the fastest growing municipality in east central Alberta, so if we want to continue to attract and keep residents we need to remember that Camrose is no longer what it was. We have become a rural city of the 21st century with an enormously charming and human scale way of living our lives." Mader Mundel is not someone who wants to be elected because she thinks what has been done in the past is bad. "We have done things very well," she said, "and now we have to enhance the vision of who we are and who we can become while holding onto the human scale that contributes to the quality of life that we enjoy." Mader Mundel initiated an afternoon film series this past spring that has proven to benefit both seniors and the Bailey Theatre. "I have heard people say how much fun it is for them to sit in a theatre that looks very much like the theatre they sat in when they first saw movies like Oklahoma or Singing in the Rain," she said. Mader Mundel is a retired Camrose teacher and development educator, as well as a recipient of the National Development Education Award from the Canadian International Development Agency. She is currently a member of the Camrose Public Library board, Camrose Subdivision and Development Appeal board, and a working group for the land use bylaw re-write.

City council candidate Kevin Hycha believes running the City of Camrose is like running a business. "The taxpayers are the City's customers," said Hycha, who is general manager for Glover International locations in Camrose and Drumheller and service director for Glover International in Camrose, Red Deer, Calgary, Drumheller, Airdrie and Rocky Mountain House. "Like customers anywhere, they deserve value for their money." Hycha feels the City council should look at additional sources of revenue, along with taxes, as a way of financing projects or improvements, and agrees with others that the level of taxation is already too high. "I don't believe we are getting full value for the amount of tax we pay," he said. Hycha sees issues with the state of the Camrose infrastructure, including the roads, sidewalks and aquatic centre, and knows that putting off improvements will result in higher costs over the long run. "I consider it a shame that Camrosians have to bounce over rough roads in order to get where they have to go," he said. Overall, Hycha truly believes that Camrose is a great place to live and raise a family. "It offers something for everyone. We have the arts centre, the arena and walking trails, all of which contribute to an oustanding quality of life. We have a well-rounded community." Hycha has lived in Camrose for the last 26 years, during which time he has demonstrated himself to be dedicated, level headed, and a great listener. He has coached and managed soccer and hockey teams, and is a past member of Camrose Toastmasters and the Camrose Police Commission. His personal hobbies and interests include golfing, hockey, camping, fishing and curling. Hycha and his wife, Carol, have two kids, Amy, who is 19 and Thomas who is 16.

Division 2 Camrose County councillor Glen Nelson from the New Norway area is stepping down from politics this fall. "I made my decision not to run again," said Glen. "This is my sixth year, just finishing my second term. The reason why is that I want to do some more things with my life, like travel. I have enjoyed my time on council. I think this (staff and council) is a great bunch to work with." Glen said the council accomplished a lot during his tenure at the county. "I found that it was an eye opener at first," said Glen. "I used to be in the background saying the county did this or should have done that. I now realize that a lot of good things happen here and I appreciate what they do for the people in Camrose County." The councillor originally thought about completing three terms, but indicated that slowing down a little to enjoy life outside of the county was the best decision for him.

Joan Petruk wants to contribute By Dan Jensen

Joan Petruk wants to be involved in the decisions that affect Camrose after the Oct. 21 election. "I have seen Camrose grow and improve over the years and I want to have input on the direction in which we are headed in the future," said Petruk. "It is important to me to be able to contribute." Petruk has attended the last couple of City council meetings and has read over the council minutes from the last couple of years to get a feeling of the issues that have been addressed. One of the things that has caught her eye is the work that has been done to make council and its committees more efficient. "I think that the work that is being done can make council more productive and lead to better decisions," she said. Petruk has always believed it is important to look at both sides of the coin before making any decisions. "It is my opinion that most of the people who are frustrated with the workings of council don't have all the facts in front them. I prefer to look at the pros and cons of everything and keep

an open mind because nothing is perfect and you might come across something when you are having discussions that you might not have thought about before." Petruk believes in order to have maximum success, elected councils need to work as a team. "When you work as a team you have to be respectful of everyone and in the end respect the decisions that are made by the group. You have to understand that everyone there is working for the betterment of the community." Petruk is recently retired from a distinguished career in which she was

employed by East Central Health for 21 years as a public health nurse and another 13 years as director/ coordinator of occupational health, safety and employee wellness. She also worked as an instructor of occupational health nursing and disability management programs at Grant MacEwan University, and managed a federally funded grant for a Healthy Worklife Initiatve in health care that reduced time loss by 11 hours per full-time equivalent. Petruk has had extensive experience with a number of professsional associations. She was president of the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta from 2009 to 2011, represented Alberta nurses as a board member of the Canadian Nurses Association from 2009 to 2011, represented Alberta nurses at the National State Board of Nursing meetings in Chicago, was a member of the Minister Advisory Committee on Occupational Cancers from 2009 to 2011 and was president of the North Chapter of the Alberta Occupational Nurses Association between 2005 and 2006. In November of 2008 she was a member of the Canadian Nurses Ambassador Pro-

gram that went to China to review that country's health care system and to share Canadian health innovation. In 2003 an article she wrote on sharps injury prevention was published in the Canadian Nurse Journal. Locally, she has served on the Camrose Homemakers' Board for 15 years and the board of the Camrose and area Further Education Council, also for 15 years. She co-organized the Camrose CPR and First Aid Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching the public first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques. Petruk received the Vogel Award from the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta in 2007 for exemplary service to provincial council. She received the Mandryk/ Ruptash award for exemplary service to the Alberta Occupational Health Nurses Association in 2006. Petruk is a talented public speaker who received Distinguished Toastmaster Status in 2013. She was area governor for Toastmasters International in 2011 and 2012 and coached the Leduc Blackgold Toastmasters in 2012 and 2013.

Tickets are on sale now for Camrose Association for Community Living's 2013 charity auction at the CRE Oct. 19. "They are a hot commodity and won't last long," said CAFCL public relations manager Cherilyn Sharkey. "Gather your family, friends

or colleagues today and purchase a table for a fun night." The CAFCL charity auction raises valuable funds for individuals with disabilities, brain injuries, children with special health or development concerns, and families at risk through an evening of food, fun and fellowship. Event highlights include a

silent and live auction, a food market and famous popcorn prizes. The charity auction is taking on greater importance in 2013 as a result of recent government cuts to CAFCL programs. "The number of people needing our help has not been reduced," said Sharkey.

"The money we raise from the charity auction helps us provide the support that they need." CAFCL is currently looking for anyone wishing to make a donation of cash or items for either the silent and live auctions. It is also offering corporate sponsorships at the platinum ($2,500),

Kodiaks unsettled By Murray Green

The Camrose Kodiaks scored first and had the majority of good scoring chances, but it was the Drumheller Dragons' offence that heated up at the right time on Sept. 7. "It's different this year with a lot of rookies and knowing that as a 20-yearold this year, it is going to be your last season," said Connor Mailey. The forward scored 13 goals and had 36 points last season after an eight goal and 33 point season the year before. "We are two games down, but we have to work hard," said Connor. "It's my last year, so it would be nice to do something special this year." Matt Waseylenko connected on a feed from Tanner MacMaster and Luc Vandale to begin the scoring in the first period. Drumheller slowly chipped away with a tally in each of the three frames to pull out a 3-1 victory. "For some of the rookies it may have been overwhelming playing in front of 1,200 people when they are used to seeing 100," added Connor. "The nerves may have got to some players. You have to be able to perform under pressure." Despite 16 power play opportunities combined for both teams, all four goals were scored at even strength. The constant parade to the penalty box disrupted the flow of the game. "Our special teams, especially the power play has to get better," said Connor. "If our power play gets a goal at the right time in each of those games, it could have turned it around for us. We have been working on improving it all week." Communication on and off the ice is the key factor. "We have to get to know each other and know what we want to do. We have to drive for the net and get pucks to the net. Crashing the net and hard work is how you score goals," said Connor. "That is Kodiaks hockey and the way we play." Camrose out shot the Dragons 44-18, but hot goaltender Curtis Skip kept Drumheller in the lead. Matt Zentner stopped 15 of 18 shots in the Camrose net. In the home opening contest, Camrose played even with the Brooks Bandits in the first two periods on Sept. 6. A bad third frame allowed the Bandits to steal the points in the 5-2 match. Brooks scored first before Tanner Tyndall replied to knot the game at 1-1 after 20 minutes. The Bandits went ahead again only to have Josh Smith net the equalizer. The Bandits outshot Camrose 46-31 with Devin McDonald turning away 41 of 45 shots directed his way.

The 2014 GMC Sierra at McClellan Chevrolet Buick GMC in Camrose has been making quite the splash. "Our customers are liking what they see," said McClellan Chevrolet Buick GMC dealer principal Will McClellan. "There isn't another truck quite like it." Rich V-6 heritage The 2014 Sierra offers the choice of three new, advanced EcoTec 34 engines – a 5.3 litre V-8, a 6.2 litre V-8 and a 4.3 litre V-6, each of which is designed specifically for the high trailering and hauling demands unique to truck buyers. Sierras equipped with the 4.3 litre EcoTec 3 V-6 have trailering ratings of up to 7,200 pounds (3,266 kg) for a regular cab, short bed, four-wheel drive model. The V-6 produces an SAE certified 285 horsepower and is matched with a proven, efficient, six-speed automatic transmission. The new V-6 features three state-of-the-art technologies – direct injection, active fuel management (cylinder de-activation), and continuously variable valve timing – that have been proven and perfected through six million hours of computational analysis

by engineers studying the combustion process. In all, ten million CPU hours were spent refining and making the most of the Sierra's EcoTec 3 engines. "This is technology no other truck maker can match, and we offer it in every EcoTec 3 engine for every customer," said Jordan Lee, GM Powertrain chief engineer. "It is a standard feature so our drivers get our best and most sophisticated technology, regardless of trim level." Although it shares only a handful of parts with previous Sierra engines, the new EcoTec 3 V-6 builds on experience gained from millions of trucks and billions of real-world customer miles resulting from a half century of leadership in V-6 engine development. In 1960, GMC debuted the first V-6 pickup truck ever and offered it exclusively through most of the 1960s. That engine, offered in various displacements starting at 5.0 litres, was designed with aluminum pistons, improved cooling and a stout crankshaft and bearings designed for unprecedented durability. "The family of V-6 engines introduced in 1960 was designed to last, and I've heard of some owners going more than 450,000

miles on the original engine," said Donald Meyer, GMC truck historian. "They had really high torque and pulled loads well. GMC knew how to build durable, reliable engines that never quit." Like the 2014 engine, the 4.3 litre V-6 introduced as standard equipment for GMC half-ton pickups in 1985 used geometry and engineering from the brand's proven Small Block V-8. As with today's V-6, engineers studied the combustion chamber, developing "Vortec" technology that swirled the air and fuel inside the engine to create a more homogenous mix, improving power and efficiency. That engine was the basis for new generations of engines throughout the 2013 model year. Fuel economy The all-new Sierra 2014 spent more development time in a wind tunnel than any GMC pickup before it, resulting in design changes that benefit both fuel efficiency and interior quietness. A new air dam below the Sierra's front bumper successfully reduces drag because it directs air toward the ground and away from the truck's rough underbody. And Sierra's ducted flow path between the

grille and radiator prevents air from swirling inside the truck's front cavities. Even the top of the Sierra's tailgate and the centre high-mounted stop lamp are optimized to guide air cleanly around the truck. Safety features The 2014 Sierra comes with available advanced active safety features never offered to full-size pickup truck owners, including Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning. The manner by which alerts from the system are delivered to the driver is equally innovative, thanks to GMC's optional Safety Alert Seat, which provides feedback transmitted as a vibration through the surface of the driver's seat bottom cushion. When the Lane Departure Warning system's camera detects the Sierra is leaving a lane without a turn signal active in that direction, a vibration in the left or right seat bolster directs the driver's attention to the side of the lane encroachment. When a potential collision is detected ahead by the Forward Collision Alert system, both sides of the seat vibrate. "It's akin to someone tapping on your shoulder in a crowd to get your attention," said General Motors

"Using the tactile sense to communicate crash threat direction provides an effective and intuitive way to cut through the clutter of visual and auditory sensory information that drivers routinely experience." Forward Collision Alert uses a camera behind the windshield to monitor traffic ahead and estimate time to collision. A green vehicleshaped icon on the instrument cluster lets the driver know the system detects a vehicle ahead. When the Sierra gets too close to a vehicle ahead the icon turns orange. When approaching a vehicle too rapidly, red lights flash on the windshield and the driver is alerted either audibly or through the optional Safety Alert Seat. Lane Departure Warning uses an icon of a vehicle crossing a dotted lane marker and shines green when detecting a lane ahead at speeds above 50 km/h. Murray Green, Camrose Booster Scott Allred of Calgary's Elbow Spring Golf Club and Camrose Golf Course pro Bill Penny won the senior and super senior PGA Alberta golf tournament in Camrose on Sept. 10 and 11. Allred shot a 142 and parred both rounds, while Penny had a 147 score.

Two local golfers had the same result on hole number 11 at the Camrose Golf Course on Sept. 11. Stu Gilroy and Ann Adamson only took one shot each on the short distance to nail a hole in one. Stu also shot an albatross in a different outing. No, he didn't go bird hunting. He sank his second shot on a par five hole in what is also known as a double eagle. He has witnesses Duff Layton, Randy Niven and Ray Gibson vouching for him. The course will be hosting a cash scramble tournament on Saturday, Sept. 21. The University of Alberta, Augustana Campus is preparing for a busy season on the athletic field, in the gym and in the arena. The Vikings hockey team split a pair of exhibition games. Augustana beat the Battleford North Stars 5-2 on Sept. 5 in the EnCana Arena. Jeff Lorenz led the offence with a goal and an assist as five different players earned goals. Tanner Korchinski, Scott Aucion, Boyd Wakelin and Craig Cornelsen also netted singles after a scoreless first period. Goalies Andy Williams and Chase Martin split the duties in the net. Williams stopped all 12 shots he faced, while Martin turned away eight of 10 shots. The University of Alberta Golden Bears defeated the Vikings 5-1 in the first preseason game. Korchinski garnered the only tally for the Vikings, while goalie Joel Danyluk stopped 30 of the 35 shots directed his way. The Vikings host NAIT on Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m. and Portage on Sept. 21 at 12:30 p.m. to round out the exhibition season. The Camrose Composite High school Trojans football team showed grit against Red Deer's Lindsay Thurber Raiders on Sept. 5 at Kin Park. Although the Trojans didn't walk away with the win (44-12), the players did learn a lot. "The players on the CCHS Trojans fought every minute of the game. There was no quit in anyone," said coach Adam Belanger. "I was very proud of the effort put forward by our guys. Wheth-

er it was their first game of football or a seasoned veteran they all played with heart and determination. I told them that I can teach blocking and tackling, but I can't coach heart and they showed a lot of it. I'm excited to see what they can do next." The Trojans started slowly against the tough 4A school, but the defence held in there until the offence got rolling. Michael Ioanidis led the offence with two long touchdown runs. He gained 157 yards on just eight carries.

CCHS hosts Red Deer's Hunting Hills Lightning at 7:45 p.m. on Sept. 20. Camrose visits rival Wetaskiwin on Sept. 28 for a Saturday game at 6 p.m. The Trojans host the Rocky Mountain House Rebels on Oct. 4 at 4 p.m. CCHS closes out the regular season in Ponoka against the Broncs at 4 p.m. on Oct. 11. Camrose hockey coach Neal Isnor and six local hockey players spent the later part of the summer playing hockey in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. "A former player of mine went over to coach and knew I had a 2002-born son, who played hockey. The hockey organizers asked him if I would coach a team," explained Neal. "When we first talked, I agreed to find five players and they would find the rest. But, I wanted to do it a little differently. I wanted to find all of my players." Not only did Neal want to go with players he knew, he wanted the team to bond quickly. "I wanted a group that would work well together. I picked a lot of players from our league that I knew something about," said Neal. "I phoned around to coaches and old teammates. I had players ask me and some even sent videos." The coach would like to do it again next year. "It was well run and what sold us was the hockey was so good. We took 16 players, in total." Coach Isnor took five Camrose players and a Daysland athlete on a team made of players from around central Alberta. Camrose players Matt Raymond, Will McPhee, Kieran Isnor, Raice Szott, Dylan Pudlowski and Daysland skater Landon Petiot were named to the squad. "We also had a player come from Consort. I even had a player from Cranbrook, BC. It's funny, but I went to scout a player from Rocky Mountain House and asked him to play," explained Neal. "My wife phoned a former neighbour and it turned out that his son played, so we ended up with both players. He became our captain, so it worked out well." Coach Neal had to turn some players away, but encouraged them to try again. "These players are only 10 and 11 right now, so hopefully there will be other opportunities for them," he added. "We started with a camp in Canmore to get the players in shape and to bond. Then on Aug. 4 we left for the Czech Republic. We played six games in the Czech Challenge Cup. They were strong clubs and some were national teams," Neal said. "Then we went to Slovakia for another tournament." Continued on page 38
