A seed of an idea initiated by the Camrose Healthy Lifestyle Coalition has blossomed into a
wonderful and bountiful community garden
in the heart of Camrose. Under the direction of Bettyann Petruk and Jane CherryLemire, who are co-chairs of the Healthy Lifestyle Coalition, plus fellow committee members: Shirley Damberger, Janet Roy, Selina Dahl and Kathryn Badry and with help from Mother Nature, the garden has flourished. Because of the generous support of the landowners this novel garden became possible. And, after a season of creative thinking, generous business support and donations, it is of great benefit to the programming at The Open Door. The Open Door supports youth in our community, especially in times of need. By teaching skill development and providing work experience in their Café Connections and through the Good Food Box initiative, many youth involved with The Open Door have often been able to increase their employment opportunities. Potatoes and vegetables planted by volunteers on Saturday, May 28th in the 51 Street community garden “planters" are now being harvested daily. This fresh produce will be used in menu items at Café Connections at The Open Door as well as the Good Food Box program. In addition, it will be used for other community charitable cooking opportunities and in classes offered through The Open Door and the Camrose Arts Society.
