Adding more security to the railway museum is an unexpected cost. “Ticket profits were going to help with general maintenance. Now it’s going to be a larger project,”

she said. "The damage won't amount to a lot, except for the added alarm system."

Fortunately, the ticket sales were brisk and Saturday night's performance was expected to be sold out.

“Founders Days were a success, but we are looking at backing it up a week next year, so volunteers have a break between BVJ and Founders Days,” said Janine. "It gives us more time as well."

Reading skills essential One of the great privileges of living in Canada is the fact that every child has the opportunity to go to school, to learn to read and write followed by access to professional and/or trades training and skill development. Outcomes for each individual are not the same and that is a matter of great concern for parents and teachers and for employers who can’t find persons with the skills necessary to fill vacant positions.

At this time of year, when students are beginning a fresh new school year, I always have a most passionate hope that every one of them will fully appreciate their good fortune, will take schooling seriously, and strive to develop to the level of their greatest potential. To reach that goal, learning to read and write is absolutely essential.

David Andreassen, a respected teacher of English at Camrose Composite High School for 37 years, was recently honoured by Camrose Adult Learning Council with the presentation of the CALC 2013 Literacy Award. In his acceptance remarks he used actual examples to make his point that “literacy, not just functional literacy, is essential to achieving a fulfilling career in 21st century Alberta.”

Two of his sons chose to earn university degrees, another chose to learn a trade skill at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT}. The son at NAIT reported that “fully half of his first year class dropped out, or flunked out, mostly because they were weak readers and could not manage the material. Andreassen provided another example. A 40-year-old man, with a strong work ethic, exemplary manual skills, and 20 years’ experience, was supporting his family on the wages of a first-year apprentice because he could not read at the level required to advance.” Andreassen believes what a master machinist told him: “the next generation of tradespeople will be the sort who have the ability to succeed at university, but have chosen to work in the trades. The trend is already here.”

It is hoped that knowing this unmistakable trend will be the incentive for all students to seriously strive for excellence at all stages of learning.

It is important that parents realize that a child must be able to read at grade level in order to succeed – which requires being aware of his or her progress.

Literacy learning begins at home, long before a child starts school, by listening to parents’ speech and by reading books together. (We acknowledge that some children have disabilities, such as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD), which limits their potential to learn, but that is another topic.)

May back-to-school be greeted by enthusiastic students eager to learn and eventually become the best they can be. May every student, every day be a success! Let each of us play a part to make it happen!

Collision On August 8, 2013, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Tofield RCMP were dispatched to an injury motor vehicle collision that occurred on Highway 14 approximately 10 km west of Tofield.

An ambulance had been

travelling west bound and was already transporting a serious patient to Edmonton, when a west bound cube van failed to pull over for the ambulance approaching from the west. The cube van made a left turn across the path of the ambulance and the two motor vehicles collided.

STARS was dispatched and the original patient was transported to a hospital in Edmonton. A passenger in the cube van was transported by another ground ambulance to a local hospital for non-serious injuries.

Tofield RCMP officers attended and are currently investigating.

Vintage Garden Tractor Show during Founders Days brings out old, unique and rare

It was a good start to a new event. The Camrose Lions Swans and Roses Club hosted the Vintage Garden Tractor Show at the Camrose Resort Casino during Founders Days, Aug. 10 and 11.

den tractors from across the province. The rarest model was shown by John Danilak of Camrose. He had his 195758 model riding mower on display. The People's Choice award went to Kevin Sharp who restored a John Deere 1967 110 model. His entry was the Best in Show as well.

The Camrose Police Service recovered a large amount of stolen property on Aug. 6 that had been stolen from numerous garages, sheds, back yards and vehicles over the last two months.

Most of the thefts

occurred in the area of 47 Street to 58 Street from 48A Avenue to 54 Avenue in Camrose. A man, age 53, of Camrose, faces a charge of possession of stolen property over $5,000 along with other unrelated criminal charges. The stolen items included a variety of tools

(power, cordless, hand, etc), extension cords, air compressor hoses, ratchet straps, a pressure washer, cell phones and assorted other items.

Police have returned items to owners who reported the thefts; however, there is still a large

amount of property that is unaccounted for. The Camrose Police Service would encourage anyone who has had property stolen from this area to contact them at 780-672-4444 to inquire if their property was part of this massive recovery.

Police would like to remind residents to lock their garages, sheds, and vehicles along with ensuring that any items of value are not left out in their back yards. All citizens are encouraged to immediately report any suspicious activity to police.

Throndson hopes to bring experience

Camrose lawyer Wayne Throndson will be one of the candidates vying for a position on City council Oct. 21.

"I think I have three characteristics that are important," said Throndson in an interview at his office last week. "One, I am a member of the business community; two, I have served on council in the past; and three, I have a legal background."

Throndson would like to see the new council focus more on water, roads and sewer.

"The municipal infrastructure initiative money that is being used to build the City Hall could have been more appropriately used to

fund core services," he said.

"Using it to build the City Hall means we won't have the luxury of government grants to do that, and means the only options available are to raise taxes, debenture or both. The City Hall will provide minimal benefit to the citizens of Camrose and potentially cost them a great deal."

Throndson said an analogy is using $5,000 to go on a holiday or to fix a roof.

"If I spend that money to go on a holiday then I am going to have to borrow money to fix the roof. That is a position we are going to find ourselves in, in the not too distant future and that is a concern."

Throndson would like to

see the new City council adopt a new business-friendly attitude.

"I think we have not seen a great deal of business expansion or new businesses coming into town in the last several years. A matter of considerable concern is that some people are saying to me that they wish they never would have built in Camrose. That is a sad commentary of where we are now.

If existing businesses are questioning that, how do we attract new businesses here?"

Throndson was elected councillor for the City of Camrose in 2004 and again in 2007, so he has a good idea of what to expect if he is elected.

"With any new council, if

you have never served before, the first year or year and a half is a considerable learning experience," he said. "You get into the budget right away as soon as you have been elected, and that is really the key role of council. A benefit I would bring is that I have been through that before so I know where the focus of the City should be. I have been involved with the budget through six years on council and I know a lot of the members of the administration and the employees of the City. ."

Throndson was born and raised in Camrose. He obtained his Law degree from the University of Alberta.

Prairie Fun Days this weekend

The sights, sounds and flavours of Camrose County will be on full display this weekend when Camrose County and the Canadian Northern Society present the third annual Prairie Fun Days.

Prairie Fun Days is a self-guided driving excursion that offers the chance to "experience Camrose County as you never have before."

"We've lined up 25 different places for people to stop over the two days, each of which is a little different in its own way," said Prairie Fun Days project manager Barb McDonald. "Some of them offer guided tours and information, while others offer activities that can be enjoyed by the whole family."

Stops on the first day (Aug. 24) will include the Maplewood Acres Market Garden and Greenhouse, Hay Lakes Telegraph Park, Glen View Organic Farm and Greenhouse, Kingman Museum and Tea House, Trondhjem Lutheran Church, the Transfiguration of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church, St. Stanislaus Church, Hampton School, Good Earth Pottery, Alberta's Littlest Airport, and Camrose County Nature Conservation Centre.

Hay Lakes Telegraph Park will offer the chance to fly kites, craft a fishing rod, take a hike along winding trails or seek out a geo cache prize.

"They'll be serving a barbecue lunch," said McDonald.

Kingman Museum and Tea House includes Inuit carvings and kitchen and quilt displays, while Good Earth Pottery features the creations of Gail Muirhead, who has taught pottery at

the Camrose Craft Centre for many years.

Trondhjem Lutheran Church was built in 1929 and moved from its original location into Round Hill in 1956. The Transfiguration of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church has been described as a treat for the eyes and soul with its beautiful artwork and colour. St. Stanislaus Church was built by settlers from memories of churches in their homeland, and features intricate colourful statues.

Alberta's Littlest Airport will offer the chance to see a variety of radio-controlled airplanes, take in the hobby shop and enjoy a corn roast.

"They'll be having a flyin so people will be able to see the airplanes doing different maneuvres in the air," said McDonald.

Camrose County Nature Conservation Centre is a place to stretch your legs, get some fresh air and observe a variety of waterfowl.

The Meeting Creek Railway Station and historic elevator will be the first stop on day two of Prairie Fun Days Aug. 25.

"The railway station is celebrating its 100th anniversary by giving tours and rides in speeder cars and covered wagons, and serving homemade pie," said McDonald. "The station will also be hosting an aboriginal round dance starting at 2 p.m."

Harper's Bistro in Meeting Creek will be serving a brunch in the Meeting Creek Community Centre from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Other stops on the second day will include Bashaw Fire Hall Museum, Bashaw Centennial Nature Trail, Fridhem Historical Church, Guest House Gallery, Friends of Little Beaver Lake Soci-

ety, Ferintosh Manor Bed and Breakfast, Roseberry Lane Market Garden, Nifty Things, Verdun School, Peter Fidler Monument, Duhamel Campsite and St. Thomas Catholic Church.

Bashaw Fire Hall Museum has housed a barber shop, police station, town council chambers, town office, court house and a jailhouse. It features the cell that once held the notorious convicted murderer, Robert Raymond Cook.

Bashaw Centennial Nature Trail appeals to visitors who are looking for a casual encounter with nature. Benches along the trail host handy rest spots, along with a shaded gazebo.

Fridhem Lutheran Church will hold an oldfashioned ecumenical service starting at 11.

Roseberry Lane Market Garden features a variety of fruits, including saskatoon berries, haskap berries, raspberries, sour cherries, high bush cranberries, currants, strawberries, apples and rhubarb.

"The market gardens are new to the Prairie Fun Days tour this year," said McDonald.

Nifty Things in New Norway impresses visitors with the quality and quantity of fine antiques and beautiful collections.

Verdun School, originally named the New Berlin School, serviced a German settlement west of Duhamel and is an excellent representation of the one-room schoolhouses in rural Alberta.

The Peter Fidler Monument marks the exact location where Peter Fidler crossed the historic Battle River in 1792.

"We started with quite a few historic buildings, like the churches and one-room schoolhouses, and have grown from there," said McDonald. "Our idea was to pick a variety of locations that would appeal to the interests of different people."

Along with seeing the sights, the Prairie Fun Days tour will offer excellent shopping opportunities.

"You'll be able to purchase market garden products, crafts and pottery, or antiques," said McDonald.

Prairie Fun Days is a great idea that has received many positive comments.

"Many people have commented what a nice drive it is and that the attractions are like having a gem in our backyard," said McDonald. "A lot of the stops are ones that people have known about for a long time but have never taken the time to go visit."

Meeting Creek Railway Station celebrating 100 years

The Canadian Northern Society will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Meeting Creek Railway Station as part of Prairie Fun Days this Sunday, August 25.

"They'll be providing rides on a speeder car, serving delicious homemade pie and old-fashioned lemonade, providing tours of the station and the 1917 prairie elevator and staging a round dance," said Prairie Fun Days organizer Barb McDonald.

The Canadian Northern Society station at Meeting Creek is a one and onehalf storey wood frame and stucco building with high hipped roof and gabled dormers, and a bracket-supported gable roof over the freight shed that extends along the platform to create an awning. The heritage value lies in its representation of typi-

cal small-town Alberta railway station architecture from the early 20th century. The station possesses significant symbolic value as an emblem of the central role of railways in opening the province to settlement and agriculture.

The railway station was constructed in 1913 according to Plan 100-29, the most common design for Canadian Northern Society third class depots that went up between 1907 and 1914.

More than 300 of these stations were constructed throughout Canada and in Minnesota. Thirty-six are recorded to have been built in Alberta, and only four had been confirmed to be in existence in 2006."

"It represents one of the few remaining examples of this design, and is unique in Canada," states the Canadian Northern Society.

The station was exten-

sively restored in 1988 to reflect the way it appeared between 1940 and 1950.

With the abandonment of the railway branch line serving Meeting Creek in 1997, Central Western Railway, the line’s owner, kindly donated a portion of the original main line and elevator track to the Canadian Northern Society. The station grounds and rightof- way now form the basis for a local park – picnic tables and washroom facilities are available for use by the visiting public.

In 1911, the Canadian Northern Railway opened a branch line known as the “Battle River Subdivision” – operating from its main line at Vegreville southwest through the growing towns of Camrose, Stettler, and Big Valley, and connecting the railway with the coal mines of Drumheller. Along the way, communities such

as Meeting Creek sprung up, and the railway would provide a new link to the outside world.

To serve its local customers, railways constructed station buildings or “depots” where residents could purchase tickets for travel on passenger trains, ship express and freight, or send telegrams – an innovative form of long-distance communication that would eventually form the basis for today’s electronic mail systems.

Thus the prairie railway station would become the centre of many small communities up until the advent of all-weather roads and improvements in transportation technology in the late 1950s.

"The Meeting Creek depot is a wonderfully preserved example of the hundreds of such structures that served communities in

western Canada during the first half of the last century," states the Canadian Northern Society. "At 100 years old, this structure has witnessed and survived dramatic changes in the rural economy, technology, and trends. The Meeting Creek depot is one of few heritage railway stations that remain in Alberta, and the last of its “class” that remains on its original site. This structure, together with the nearby Alberta Pacific Grain Elevator, is a Designated Provincial Historic Resource. Both sites are maintained by dedicated volunteers known as the Canadian Northern Society and are open to the public during special community events and by appointment through the Camrose Heritage Railway office at 780-6723099."

Students residing in the Beaver County, Camrose County and Flagstaff County Wards Students new to these wards should register for bus service by calling the Transportation Department at 780-672-6131, extension 5244, or 1-800-262-4869, extension 5244, well in advance of school opening so that efficient routes can be planned. Students who were transported to a Division-operated school by bus during the last school year will be included in our plans for the 2013-2014 school year. Any questions regarding attendance areas and/or eligibility for busing should be directed to the Director or Assistant Director of Transportation.

Students residing in the City of Camrose Ward Transportation will be provided for students within the City of Camrose on the following basis: • Eligible students (those who live further than 2.4 kilometers from their designated school), will be served first at no cost; those students who were registered in the Battle River Regional Division school last year and were eligible for busing will be planned for again this year.

Reminder: students will be expected to produce their bus passes upon entering the bus.

• Non-eligible students (those who live closer than 2.4 kilometers from their designated school) will be served next, on a first-come, first-served basis, for an annual fee of $375.00 per student in grades 1-12, or $337.50 per ECS student. Registration for busing of noneligible students will be confirmed upon receipt of the applicable fee. Reminder: students will be expected to produce their bus passes upon entering the bus.

• Bus Passes are sold as a year pass; no half-passes or winter passes will be sold.

Camerata celebrates ten years

Offering Non-competitive, Self Esteem Building Programs In:

Coming from one amazing season, Camrose Camerata looks to create yet another memorable and exciting year of choral music.

In the course of our 2012-13 season, Camerata presented three concerts to enthusiastic audience reaction. Then, to top off our year, Camerata earned the honour of being named Camrose and District Music Festival Rose Bowl recipient for 2013. This prestigious award is given to the individual or group receiving the highest adjudication mark of our week-long local festival.

Winning the Rose Bowl was both a surprise and an affirmation of the dedication and musicianship that our singers and accompanist bring to this ensemble. We were then extremely pleased to be recommended on to the provincial/national festivals competition, and thrilled to hear that we had placed first in our division at the June provincials. There is still the remaining national level adjudication, set to take place mid-August. We are keeping our fingers crossed and waiting to hear back from that one as we look to this coming season.

The new season marks the 10th anniversary of this local, high-calibre chamber choir. We are delighted at having reached this milestone, and plan to mark the occasion in two special concerts.

Our first, “Sing On!; Ten years of Camrose Camerata” will be a celebration and survey of the best and best-loved choral works from our 10 years as a choir. We have so many wonderful songs in our repertoire from throughout our history that it may be hard to pare down our choices, but we have a wonderful opportunity to share the choir's favourites and audience favourites from over the years, and we really look forward to putting this concert together. The date of that performance is planned for Saturday, January 11, 2014.

The second concert, set for April 12, 2014, will give Camerata an opportunity to highlight our collaborative work with other musicians throughout our tenyear history, and will include Schubert's Mass in G with small orchestra as well as songs by composers with connections to Camrose and area. For the Mass in G, plans are in the works to collaborate with members of an Edmonton Choir – Vocal Alchemy – and perhaps a few other special guests.

Free weight management sessions offered by Alberta Health Services An Alberta Health Services weight management program in the Viking Community Health Centre multipurpose room will be teaching safe and effective strategies to manage weight.

Weight Wise offers a series of free workshops led

Before you sign up for your child's sport or dance classes, see if you qualify for assistance. Applications can be picked up at the Superstore entrance at the bright yellow box marked KidSport. Applications can also be sent to you by mail, fax or by calling KidSport.

“We have issued funding to numerous families in our community to help their children get off the sidelines and into the game. It feels really great every time we get an application, as we know we are helping a child," said Dean Threinen, local chapter chair.

The chapter helped with ball and soccer registrations this spring. The fall weather will bring football, hockey, figure skating and dance to the forefront.

"With fund-raising and donations we have been able to increase our amount from $250 to $350 within a 12-month period," explained Dean. "This is open to all sports that have lessons or instruction for progression. You can't use the funds for a swimming pass, it would have to be for swimming lessons, etc."

KidSport believes that all children should be given the opportunity to experience the positive benefits of organized sports. KidSport provides support to children in order to remove financial barriers that prevent their learning an organized sport.

If a child needs equipment for the sport program, KidSport sends a referral to The Brick Sport Central.

KidSport issues funds directly to the sport organization or community association on behalf of the child. "That is why it is important to apply prior to the registration for the sport," said Dean.

When the application has been approved, KidSport sends a letter and cheque to the sport organization for the child’s fees.

KidSport Camrose serves residents of the city, Camrose County, or youth from the surrounding area who are registered in sport programs in these areas.

Local representatives will also be at the community registration night at the Camrose Community Centre (fieldhouse) on Thursday, Sept. 5, to answer questions from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Labour Day is just around the corner. Some people may be packing away their light-colored clothing, including white shoes and pants.

The myth that white shouldn’t be worn after Labour Day has prevailed for years and years. At the end of summer, conventional fashion wisdom states that white clothing should be packed away, only to return come Victoria Day. Although many etiquette experts have been queried, there is no firm justification as to why the white moratorium is set into place each and every Labour Day. Some surmise this fashion “rule” dates back to the early 20th century.

One common explanation has to do with the availability of air conditioning and methods to keeping cool. In the 20th century, wardrobes were not as casual as they are today. People wore what many would now consider formal clothing.

So instead of donning a pair of shorts and a tank top, men and women would wear white and lightcolored clothing that was lighter in weight. This was done in an effort to keep cool during the heat of summer. After Labor Day, when summer gave way to fall, wearing light fabrics would leave people too chilly, so people cast aside white for darker, heavier fabrics.

Other historians speculate that the white rule had more to do with social class than fashion. White clothing was associated with the upper-class, who had enough disposable income to change clothing styles and jet-set to vacation haunts. In an effort to assimilate, some lower-class people would emulate the well-to-do by wearing white and light-colored clothing. Rules were established by those in the know that white was eschewed after Labour Day. The insiders would help keep the social climbers out by establishing the guidelines in their social sects.

Others scoff at these assumptions but can’t quite put a finger on where the etiquette regarding white clothing after Labour Day originated. But rules were made to be broken, and today many people no longer adhere to traditional rules of fashion, including the one suggesting wearing white after Labor Day, is a faux pas. In fact, many fashion trendsetters have embraced wearing white after Labour Day, much as fashion maven Coco Chanel was known to wear white suits year-round in the 1920s.

While white linen and gauzy fabrics may not be appropriate or comfortable after Labor Day, white certainly can be worn as corduroy pants and sweaters. In fact, a “winter white” shade which is a creamier hue of white for colder months, has become popular.

Naturally, brides who get married after September have been wearing white after Labour Day for decades – with no ill effects. Men and women can opt for heavier cotton sweaters, white boots, and winter white peacoats to integrate white into their fall and winter ensembles.

Experience the flavour of rural life during Open Farm Days

The minister of agriculture and rural development wants everyone in the province to receive a taste of rural life this August.

Minister Verlyn Olson, farmers and ranchers across Alberta invite everyone to experience rural life during the first Open Farm Days, Aug. 24 and 25.

The festivities will start on Saturday, Aug. 24, when talented chefs will team up with local producers to create farm-to-table culinary events. Details of these special events will be available at www.albertafarmdays.com in late July.

On Sunday, Aug. 25, more than 40 farms will open their gates at no charge to the public for a fun and educational look at rural life. Visitors will be treated to winery and honey tours, u-pick farms, horse-drawn hayrides, a corn maze, a chance to get close to animals and much more. Visitors will have the opportunity to buy crafts, fresh produce and products directly from the source, while learning about how farmers and ranchers contribute to our communities.

“Open Farm Days gives Albertans an opportunity to discover the province beyond the city limits,” said minister Olson, also the MLA for Wetaskiwin-Camrose. “This event will highlight the tremendous work our farmers and ranchers are doing to grow the province’s agriculture, agri-food and ag-tourism industries.”

There will be three stops in the local trading area for visitors.

The Glen View Farm and Greenhouse north of Camrose will be open from 2 to 6

p.m. You can visit the farm and see over 90 varieties of tomatoes and 40 varieties of sweet peppers, melons and vegetables. While you are examining the vegetables, pet the friendly sheep, ducks, chickens, llamas and donkeys. There will be tomatoes and peppers for sale and cold drinks available. The Meeting Creek Railway Station and Elevator will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Join the community for the 100th anniversary celebration of the Meeting Creek Station. Costumed interpreters will tour you through the station and the 1917 classic prairie elevator. Enjoy rides in a speeder car and covered wagon, crafts for children and activities for the entire family. Homemade pie and lemonade will be available.

The Ruzicka Sunrise Farm near Killam is a certified organic poultry, beef and free range hog mixed farm that will be open from 9 to 11 a.m.

Take a farm tour that will show how they raise poultry and hogs on pasture and the rotational grazing system for cattle. The tour explains the importance of managing the various ecosystems, the importance of trees, healthy riparian areas around creeks, and habitat management to maintain and promote biodiversity.

Open Farm Days was a program that was launched to showcase and foster Alberta’s strong economic and cultural connections to the agriculture industry, while promoting and growing tourism across the province.

Exploring Alberta’s backyard during Open Farm Days is an ideal place to start,” said Dr. Richard Starke, minister of tourism, parks and recreation. “Tourism in Alberta’s rural communities contributes more than $1.5 billion to our economy each year, and Open Farm Days is a positive step towards seeing that figure grow.”

Alberta Open Farm Days is a collaborative pilot project presented by the Government of Alberta, Ag for Life, the Alberta Culinary Tourism Alliance, the Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies, Travel Alberta, and more than 40 farms and ranches across the province.

“Ag for Life believes that a strong agricultural community, a strong agricultural economy makes for a strong Alberta,” said David Sprague, CEO of Agriculture for Life. “Open Farm Days is a great opportunity for our farmers and ranchers to tell their story and demonstrate how their contribution benefits everyone. We're delighted to be part of Open Farm Days in Alberta.”

Still time to enter Prairie Fun Days Havin' A Hay Day contest

Don't worry if you didn't submit your entry for Prairie Fun Days' Havin' a Hay Day contest by August 16.

"We've extended the deadline until August 23, the day before Prairie Fun Days," said Prairie Fun Days project manager Barb McDonald.

The Havin' a Hay Day contest is challenging those with creative minds to make a roadside sculpture with bales – round or square, large or small – that can be seen by those travelling the Prairie Fun Days route Aug. 24 and 25.

"Contestants are able to incorporate any kind of materials into the bales to make them more interesting," said McDonald. "The only limit is their imagination."

popping up at various locations in Camrose County over the last few weeks.

"It is really fun to see," said McDonald. "I think people are enjoying that chance to do something different."

Winners of the Havin' a Hay Day contest will be determined by the number of votes that are cast at each of the manned Prairie Fun Days stops. First prize for an organization is a $400 gift certificate from UFA. First prize for an individual or family is a $200 gift certificate donated by UFA and a framed print, Time To Move On, donated by Guest House Gallery. Second prize for an individual or family is a $100 gift certificate donated

by UFA and a framed print, Country Gardens, donated by Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park.

The hay bale art contest is being billed as a great promotional tool. Some of the bales left standing at the end of the contest have the chance to get world-wide exposure from the televised covered of the Tour of Alberta on September 4.

Legion seeks assistance in finding home for cenotaph

The Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is asking for City of Camrose assistance in finding a new location for its cenotaph.

The cenotaph will have to be moved when the Legion goes from its current location on the 48 Avenue's south service road to its new home in the former Knights of Columbus Hall.

A Royal Canadian Legion cenotaph relocation committee consisting of Cmde Tom Coultis, Cmde Lloyd Dool and Cmde Ragnar Gislason has been looking at various locations in and around the city. The committee's top preference is the new City Hall, followed by the museum (east side) and the City park across the road from the future location.

"By choosing a new and conspicuous location it would serve as a reminder to all citizens of the heroic and supreme sacrifices made by former citizens to help make this the greatest country in the world to

live in," said Gislason in a July letter to the mayor and council Mayor Marshall Chalmers told council Aug. 6 that City administration has already been involved in relocation discussions, and will, at some future point, provide a report for council's consideration.

Councillor John Howard questioned whether there would be financial assistance required with the cenotaph move.

"We are coming up on the budget and that is not a cheap process."

City corporate and protective services general manager Kim Isaak said other municipalities have been able to receive grants to help with cenotaph moves.

Property transfer Council has approved the transfer of a City lot at the Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park to the Canadian Northern (Meeting Creek) Society for the amount of $1.

"The Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park conducts their pro-

grams and business from City property," said City manager Damian Herle in an Aug. 6 report to City council.

The City of Camrose acquired the property in question from the Canadian Northern Railway Company in 2006 at no cost. In February, 2007, it approved the designation of the railway station and land as a provincial historic resource in accordance with the provisions of the Historical Resources Act and regulations, a designation that was later formalized by the Province.

"One of the intentions of the designation was to allow for the access of funding from the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation," said Herle.

The City of Camrose is required to provide notification to Alberta Historical Resources of potential title transfer and provide 30 days of notice.

"Under Section 70 of the Municipal Government Act the City can transfer property to a non-profit

organization," said Herle.

"The Canadian Northern Historical Society is a registered non-profit agency.

Lands that contain a provincial historic resource designation can be transferred, however the caveat remains on title for the designation and any changes on site would have to be approved in accordance with provincial regulations."

Alberta Culture Days Council received notification Aug. 6 that the provincial government will be providing $5,000 for an Alberta Culture Days celebration Sept. 27 to 29 filled with such (proposed) activities as a photography show, display of acrylic art, tours of the museum, contemporary Japanese drumming, demonstrations of weaving, pottery and woodworking, workshops and a reading and chat with an Alberta author.

The City of Camrose and Camrose Arts Society will be providing gifts in kind and financial assistance through their existing budgets.

Rick was born and raised in Camrose, AB. Rick leaves to mourn his loving wife of 39 years, Sharen Feth; his sons Michael (Bill) Vincent and Mark Feth; and his grandchildren Haylee, Lucas, DJ, Darren and Bryan. Minor baseball players advance to western playoffs

Although the season wrapped up for the Camrose bantam baseball team, two players were picked up to play in the western championships on Aug. 16 to 18.

Spencer Burton and Kyler Charchun were added to the Olds Spitfires roster for the baseball tournament in Swift Currrent, Saskatchewan. "The team was undefeated all year and then we lost in the finals at provincials to Olds," explained Eric Burton, Spencer's father.

"Spencer participated in a zone camp to go to the prospects team that will be a Team Alberta club."

Members of the Sherwood Park Athletes triple-A club also asked Spencer to join them for nationals in Vaughn, Ontario. He leaves on Aug. 20, two days after the westerns are finished. "He played with Sherwood Park last year, so it was a nice fit for him to go to nationals," said Eric. "The team is going to watch the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees play, so he is excited about that too and it will be a great experience."

Both Spencer and Kyler have played many years with Camrose teams and now they have the opportunity to continue to play the sport they love at a higher level. "For Spencer to represent Alberta would be an opportunity for him to start getting ranked in the province and it could lead to other events," added Eric.

The 15-year-old Spencer is looking at a baseball high school next year to improve his skills. He plays mostly catcher, pitcher and centre field. "He is coming into his own as a pitcher, but he is mostly a catcher," said his dad. "He is a goalie in the winter, so the positions go together."

Spencer hasn't decided which sport is more important yet. "I'm beyond excited at going to westerns and nationals," said Spencer, through his dad. "I'm looking forward to the opportunity to play with other players and

develop new relationships. It will be tough, but I'm going for the experience as I strive to get better."

Both Spencer and Kyler are leaders on and off the field and are good representatives of Camrose Minor Ball.

"All of the representative teams in Camrose qualified for baseball provincials, which says a lot about our program," stated Eric. "Our second mosquito team came back with silver medals, so the future looks bright in our younger age groups as well.

We are seeing a lot of great things happening."

Harrison captures juvenile golf championship

By Murray Green Camrose golfer Andrew Harrison won the juvenile division at the Canadian Junior Boys' Championship at Timberwolf Golf Club in Sudbury, Ontario, on Aug. 2.

Andrew garnered the title with a three-stroke lead over both Curtis Chan of Richmond, B.C., and Étienne Papineau of Bromont, Quebec. The local golfer had scores of 71-69-70-73 for a total of 283.

"It was my best week of golf I've ever had and it was fun to play," said Andrew. "I was close to the top junior layers until the last nine holes when I shoot some bogies."

Kevin Kwon of Pitt Meadows in Maple Ridge, B.C., won the junior division with a 276 score over four rounds. Andrew placed fourth overall at 5-under.

Andrew, 16, carded a 2-under 70 in his third round to sit three strokes behind Kwon in second place at 6-under par. However, Andrew's 73 score in the last round knocked him out of the running for the junior crown.

Kwon earned an exemption into the 2013 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship at the Royal Colwood Golf Club and George Vale Golf Club in Victoria, B.C. Andrew also entered the men's tournament and placed 65th.

Andrew is in his last year of juvenile and will be one of the top contenders in the junior ranks next year.

He added his hot play by firing a 65 in the Camrose club tournament. "It was my best round and I hope to continue. Some of my hard work practicing is starting to pay off."

Frank Van Dornick set the Camrose Golf Course record with a 64. "My goal for the future is to set a new record," said Andrew modestly.

Announcement My intent with this submission is to inform the residents of Camrose regarding this fall’s municipal election. I will not be seeking re-election. After a great deal of deliberation, I have decided to open up a seat on council for a new candidate. I sincerely hope all candidates for mayor and councillor seats will bring forward fresh ideas, enthusiasm, and their vision for our progressive and beautiful city.

The 2014 Ford Escape at Lamb Ford Sales in Camrose is proof that you can make a good thing better.

"The addition of SYNC and a rearview mirror a standard equipment builds on what was already a pretty impressive package and makes it stand out as one of the best small crossovers," said Lamb Ford sales manager Brett Read.

Smart utility Ford calls the Escape the "smarter utility vehicle" because it offers the strengths that customers value – fuel economy, versatility and new technology.

"Ford understands that more people every year are looking at vehicles like Escape and we want to give them even more reasons to buy," said Raj Nair, group vice president, Global Product Development.

Eco Boost Ford Escape's EcoBoost technology combines twin independent variable camshaft timing, turbocharging and direct injection to let you get plenty of power out of every drop of fuel.

The 1.6 litre EcoBoost four-cylinder uses just 9.1 litres per 100 km in the City and 6.0 litres per 100 km on the highway.

The 2.0 litre EcoBoost

four cylinder uses just 9.5 litres per 100 km in the city and 6.7 litres per 100 km on the highway while delivering 240 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque.

"The Escape with the 2.0 litre engine can easily tow up to 1,588 kg when properly equipped," said Read.

Ford Escape's standard engine is a 2.5 litre with 168 horsepower and 170 lb.ft. of torque.

All three engines are mated to a six-speed Select Shift Automatic transmission with Sport mode.

The Ford Escape makes itself more aerodynamic and fuel efficient with its class-exclusive active grille shutters.

"When closed they help to reduce the drag caused by air travelling through the engine compartment," said Read.

Torque Vectoring Control seamlessly enhances hold on the road while electric power-assisted steering enables pull-drift compensation to help correct for road irregularities and improve overall steering feel.

"It's a family-friendly event, the purpose of which is to get people out enjoying the watershed," said Battle River Watershed Alliance watershed planning coordinator Sarah Skinner.

The saskatoon pie contest has been a mainstay of the festival for the past four years, attracting between 10 and 20 pies.

"We've received some very good pies," explained Skinner. The judges will have first dibs at sampling the pies, after which festival participants can sample as many as they want and vote for their favourites."

Guest speakers for the festival will include Ashley Rawluk, from Cows and Fish, who will talk about the importance of plants that grow along the lakes and wetlands, Shirley Lupino, from the Mountain View Regional Waste Management Commission, who will be talking about the various scales on which composting can happen, and Patty Milligan, from Lola Canola Natural Honey, who will talk about the value of bees in the environment.

"Milligan will be doing a honey tasting of Lola Canola products at the end of her talk," said Skinner.

Dana Stromberg, from the Alberta Lake Management Society, will be at the festival to show people how to do water testing.

Kids' activities will include crafts and the possibility of dipping for bugs in Stoney Creek.

A community art project will invite festival participants to help paint a rain barrel.

"We're going to have an outline of a landscape on the rain barrel and will be inviting attendees to pick up a paintbrush and make their contribution to it," said Skinner.

The Battle River Watershed Festival will start at 10 in the morning and go to 3 in the afternoon. Festival sponsors include the City of Camrose, Enerplus and Cargill.

UNIDIRECTIONAL FLUSHING PROGRAM

Why the City of Camrose is implementing the Unidirectional Flushing (UDF) Program: 1. To maintain and improve the City’s water quality.

2. To improve water flow and pressure in the water distribution system.

3. To reduce bacterial growth, restore disinfectant residual, and improve water color.

4. Unidirectional Flushing uses 40% less water than traditional flushing programs due to increased water velocity.

5. In addition to scouring the water pipes, the UDF Program also gives the City the opportunity to check, exercise, and maintain all water valves and hydrants.

The UDF program began July 18, 2013, starting with Zone A and will continue for 2-3 months. Water service should not be disrupted during the flushing process. There may be a slight drop in pressure or a presence of discoloration in the water from the minerals and sediments being flushed from the pipes. If discoloration is noticed, please turn the tap off for 15 minutes and flush from your bathtub tap until the water is clear. City of Camrose Requires All Homes Be Built like Shoes!

All children like nursery rhymes, so to appeal to young families with children the City of Camrose is amending its Land Use Bylaw to require all new homes to be built like shoes!

What Is A Land Use Bylaw?

A Land Use Bylaw is a document that outlines the location and standards for all forms of development within the City of Camrose. This document will provide the location for all future commercial, industrial and residential development while establishing the standards that govern how it must look and where features such as parking, landscaping and signage must be located.

Why Should I Get Involved?

In building on the previously prepared Community Sustainability Plan, Municipal Development Plan and Downtown Action Plan, the City is reviewing the Land Use Bylaw to help achieve the overall vision for the community. This document will not only impact what is permitted on your individual property but could change what is or is not permitted on nearby properties. Overall this document will help shape the appearance and manage potential growth of Camrose in the years to come.

How Do I Get Involved?

Roof top event benefits Special Olympics

Camrose First Responders will be camping on the Walmart roof in order to raise funds and create awareness for Special Olympics Camrose on Sept. 20 and 21.

For over 25 years The Law Enforcement Torch Run, has been an appreciated and cherished partner with Special Olympics in hundreds of communities across Canada.

Camrose Police Services have generated support from first responders to join them in sitting on Walmart's roof from 10 a.m. on Friday to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Athletes and officers will circulate to collect donations. A barbecue is planned for both days, there will be emergency vehicle demonstrations, a merchandise table, mascots, a K-9 dog demonstration, music and a Friday evening parking lot dance.

"Walmart will be donating their facility, parking lot and food for the event," said Carol Wideman, of Special Olympics. "We are hoping that everyone can be involved."
