Each Tuesday and Thursday evening, volunteers Tom Chelmick, Allister MacMillan and Brian Lewis are passionate about the opportunity to give rides to local children and tourists. They take turns serving as engineer and conductor as the little train winds its way through the paved trails starting from the Bill Fowler Centre. To date this summer, despite numerous weather-related shutdowns and a few cancellations, seven season passes and 3,346 individual excursion tickets have been sold for the popular train ride. In addition, the dedicated volunteer group, thanks to business sponsors, has taken the train to parades and other events to destinations including St. Albert, Ryley, Ponoka, Andrew, Macklin, Bruderheim and Capital Ex in Edmonton. The Camrose Mirror Lake Express even earned first place honors for its To Rural Homes appearance at the Andrew and Edmonton parades, and second place in Leduc. It was an With Booster equal crowd favourite at the Big Valley Jamboree parade right here at home. ✔

On September 1, as evenings get shorter, Camrose Chamber of Commerce will “derail” the train after a season of making friends and memories. This means there are just six more opportunities in 2012 to experience the beautiful Mirror Lake trail system as never before. The Chamber thanks the many volunteers who help to bring smiles to so many faces.
