Miss Alice Rogers, an Alberta Government Telephones agent working in Delburne, beginning in 1908, will be played by Nora Smith (a current Delburne resident). And, New Sarepta’s own master storyteller, Mary Ann Lippiatt, will represent the character of Lily Pitthouse, the daughter of George Pitthouse, the founder of Hay Lakes.

Ludwig out of the medals

Former Augustana student Dorothy (nee Hare) Ludwig placed 34th in the women's 10 metre air pistol event at the Olympic Games in London, July 29.

The Canadian shooter fired a total score of 376 in the qualification round, which wasn't enough to advance to the final.

China’s Guo Wenjun garnered the gold medal with a score of 488.1, while Celine Goberville of France collected the silver and Olena Kostevych was awarded the bronze.

The 33-year-old former Augustana student made her Olympic Games debut this year. Dorothy had to defeat her sister Lynda Kiejko in the national trials to qualify for the Olympic Games. She won gold in the 10m air pistol event at the 2011 Pan American Games. Dorothy’s father, Bill Hare, represented Canada in three Olympic Games (Tokyo 1964, Mexico City 1968, Munich 1972).

The best Canadian finish at the Olympics in the women’s 10m air pistol was 31st by Sharon Cozzarin at Barcelona 1992.

Dorothy was a 2000 BA graduate at Augustana and currently resides in Langley, B.C., She is a five-time national champion who has shot competitively for the last 20 years. She won team bronze at the Commonwealth Games and at the Championship of the Americas in 2010, and a team gold and individual silver at the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

ATTENTION PARENTS: Registration for School Bus Passes is August 20-24, 2012 Transportation will be provided for students within the City of Camrose on the following basis: • Eligible students (those who live further than 2.4 kilometers from their designated school), will be served first at no cost; those students who were registered in the Battle River Regional Division school last year and were eligible for busing will be planned for again this year.

Reminder: students will be expected to produce their bus pass upon entering the bus.

• Non-eligible students (those who live closer than 2.4 kilometers from their designated school) will be served next, on a first-come, first-served basis, for an annual fee of $350.00 per student in grades 1-12, or $315.00 per ECS student. Registration for busing of non-eligible students will be confirmed upon receipt of the applicable fee.

In 1905, Miss Spokkeli was hired to teach at the first school in Camrose. Her first class had 19 students and was held in a small wooden building on Main Street.

Signe married Irving Hills in 1907. Mrs. Hills died at age 102 years as one of our longest living pioneers.

Almer Julian Jorgensen Ofrim– moved to Camrose in 1906 where he worked in construction and blacksmithing, earning a reputation as a noted blacksmith. In 1918, he opened a hardware store with Adolph Maland. Their building, at the corner of 50th and 50th, became a favorite gathering spot and a place where rural folk commonly stopped to warm up before heading home. They remained part of the local business community until 1959.

The good old days: they were and they were not Older folks often talk about the good old days. That has happened more than usual this week as our city prepares for the annual celebration of Founders Days and, later in the month, as Camrose County prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Looking back is good and necessary. To see from where Camrose has come in the last one hundred years, or how the County has improved in the last half century is the only way in which we can measure progress – that is, determine whether or not life is getting better.

I feel qualified to pass judgment because of my good fortune in having lived here most of the years since 1905 when Camrose was first incorporated. Although this date preceded my birth, I am old enough to have personally known many of the men and women whose names appear in the history of Camrose 19051980 (entitled A Light into the Past, edited by Dr. J. R. Stan Hambly) and almost all of those who have been honoured on Founders Days. I once lived across the street from Mr. Frank P. Layton, a distinguished gentle man who was the first overseer of Camrose in 1905, and later its mayor and lifelong prominent citizen in the community. Mrs. Signe Spokkeli Hills, Camrose’s first teacher, lived next door to us. Francois Adam, the man who had the foresight to plan our 100 feet wide main street, has been called the father of Camrose. I attended his 94th birthday party, a community event at which he spoke and also leapt into the air and clacked his heels to prove both his mental and physical agility at that advanced age. Hiram Burgar arranged my grandmother’s funeral. Such are my many memories as I recall the days when everything in Camrose was within walking distance on either board or cinder sidewalks, when the population was about 2,500, and everybody knew everybody.

Were the old days good? In many ways, yes. There was optimism and hope and a strong desire to make a good life in a new land. People knew that they needed each other for survival and perhaps that was the bond that made immigrants from various ethnic origins work together for the benefit of all. They built churches, schools, hospitals; they built roads, established utility systems; they respected, even embraced, cultural differences and had the wisdom to reserve public land for green spaces.

Were the old days good? In many ways, no. The hardships faced by the pioneers of one hundred years ago are unimaginable to younger generations that followed. In addition to the harshness and unpredictability of the weather was the lack of all-weather roads, sparsity of communication systems such as mail, telephone, radio and, of course, no television. Even more unsettling was the unavailability of emergency health care and illness prevention information. Visits to old cemeteries attest to the fact that mortality rates were comparatively high among the pioneer men, women and children. Similarly, there was a lack of opportunities for public education, sometimes because there was no school and/or no teacher, sometimes because a school was too far away, sometimes because children were needed to help with work to support the family, sometimes simply because education was not compulsory.

Would I like to relive the old days? Never! Especially if I needed health care, wanted an education and desired the opportunity to earn a comfortable living. BVJ celebrates 20 years with a sell-out

For the first time in the Big Valley Jamboree history of 20 years, the entire weekend was sold out.

"Every day has been sold out and that is 90,000 paying customers. That doesn't count workers or volunteers," said BVJ producer Larry Werner. “This has been a goal of the festival for the last 20 years. It just goes to show that our fan support continues to grow stronger as the years go on, and for that we are extremely grateful.

This is a proud moment for everyone on our team. It will be something we will remember for a long, long time. We owe each and every one of them a big thank you.”

Prior to the outdoor music festival on August 1, BVJ was down to its last 500 tickets each day. They soon sold out. "We have had single day sell-outs before, but not the entire four days. We had about 12,300 people at the kick-off. We may have been able to get a few more in, but it was getting crowded," said Larry.

"The concert bowl holds about 25,000 to 26,000."

This year's edition of BVJ set an attendance record by a large margin. "The previous best attendance was around the 82,000 mark, so we passed it by a fair bit," said the excited producer. "This is big for us. For Camrose, a community of 17,000, this is spectacular."

Topping that mark will be a little tougher next year. "Do we even want to increase it?

When this is over we will sit down and do a post-mortem and decide where to go from here. We will examine if there is room to expand and if we want to expand.

We are happy with a sell-out and we will be content to try and keep selling out from here on in and accept the icing on the cake.

Having a sell-out gives us the comfort of knowing what income we have and expenses we occur.

There is no point getting bigger for the sake of getting bigger. We can still do some fine tuning. If we have a sell-out every year, I'm happy with that. We will examine if expanding is a benefit."

Larry said BVJ is still about country music. "If I go out and ask the fans, they will say the main stage entertainment is the reason they come here. We throw a lot of other things at them, but in the end they are here to listen to good music. The stuff we give them is just a little over and above. It is a little extra," added Larry, when talking about the other attractions such as Bulls for Breakfast, the trade show and the lumberjack show.

The producer quickly filled a gap on Friday. "Marlee Scott had to cancel and I don't have the details on why yet. We called up Myrol just two days before the show and they agreed to fill the spot," said Larry.

"My favourite, so far, has got to be Clayton Bellamy. The first song he sang, he blew me away.

He not only had a great show at the kick-off, he is leading the songwriter's workshop, which is cool."

Algar has been to every Big Valley Jamboree

There isn't much Ginnie Algar hasn't seen in the 20-year history of Big Valley Jamboree.

"I have been to every one," said Algar before the BVJ Kick-Off Party last Thursday night. "I volunteered for the first one and that was it. After that I wanted to go to watch."

Ginnie and her husband, Doug, have always been impressed with the value Big Valley Jamboree offers to the country music fan.

"The lineup of artists keeps getting better and there are always new things to do," she said. "It is our holiday at home."

Ginnie said two of her favourite things at the Jamboree are watching the people and meeting new friends.

"You meet people everywhere. The area we sit in is filled with friends who have been here before. We phone each other occasionally throughout the year and every once in a while some of them come to Camrose."

This year's Jamboree was different in that it was the first one for Ginnie without her father.

"This is the weekend we usually spend with my dad but he is not here this year, which is kind of sad," she said. "He and other members of the family usually come into town and we make it a whole family event."

Ginnie rates the show put on by Brooks and Dunn as one of the best she has seen at Big Valley Jamboree.

"That was probably one of the better ones, although the performance by Sugarland was pretty good, too," she said.

As a seasoned BVJ vet, Ginnie has learned what to do and what to avoid. Her advice for new BVJ fans is to go early and watch as many of the performers as they can over the course of the four days.

"The ones we have seen in the afternoon are the up and comers and some of them have ended up having wonderful careers," she said.

Ginnie said it is fun to watch CMT or the Juno awards and pick out the artists who have performed at the Jamboree.

"It is pretty neat to be able to say when someone wins a Juno or something that we saw him."

Ginnie went into this year's Jamboree with the hope of being able to speak with Kellie Pickler and Blake Shelton, two of her favourite performers.

"I really want to meet Kellie," said Ginnie, who, up until this year, had only been able to meet Charlie Daniels. "I haven't seen her perform before but I watch her every time she comes on the Ellen Show and find her absolutely hilarious. As for Blake Shelton, I have seen him on VOICE, and he just seems like a really nice guy."

Ginnie said the trickle down benefits that Camrose businesses receive from Big Valley Jamboree are phenomenal.

"Our business (2nd Floor Computers) does not benefit directly from Big Valley but it is great for the hotels and restaurants and it provides them with the money they need when it comes time to buy computers. I think it is a very important event in our community, just as the RBC Cup and the curling events were."

LEARNING INSTITUTE Schools, Division Office, and most worksites in Battle River School Division #31 will be closed on August 28 and 29, 2012 to permit all staff to attend a Learning Institute. Please note this office closure includes the Transportation Department, so it will not be possible to purchase bus passes on these days.

• New Registrations Students new to Battle River School Division #31 should register at the school they will be attending and provide a birth certificate when registering.

Busing Service • Students residing in the Beaver County, Camrose County and Flagstaff County Students new to these areas should register for bus service by calling the Transportation Department at 780-672-6131, extension 5244, or 1-800-262-4869, extension 5244, well in advance of school opening so that efficient routes can be planned. Students who were transported to a Division-operated school by bus during the last school year will be included in our plans for the 2012-2013 school year. Any questions regarding attendance areas and/or eligibility for busing should be directed to the Director of Transportation.

Students residing in the City of Camrose Transportation will be provided for students within the City of Camrose on the following basis: • Eligible students (those who live further than 2.4 kilometers from their designated school), will be served first at no cost; those students who were registered in the Battle River Regional Division school last year and were eligible for busing will be planned for again this year.

Reminder: students will be expected to produce their bus passes upon entering the bus.

• Non-eligible students (those who live closer than 2.4 kilometers from their designated school) will be served next, on a first-come, first-served basis, for an annual fee of $350.00 per student in grades 1-12, or $315.00 per ECS student. Registration for busing of noneligible students will be confirmed upon receipt of the applicable fee. Reminder: students will be expected to produce their bus passes upon entering the bus.

• Effective immediately, partial Bus Passes are no longer available; because a seat is secured for the paid rider, no half-passes or winter passes will be sold.

• We now accept cash, cheque, Visa, Mastercard and Debit.

Battle River School Division #31 will be accepting registrations for busing in the City of Camrose from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon and 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. during the week of August 20-24, 2012 at the following address: 5402-48A Avenue, Camrose. Any questions regarding attendance areas and/or eligibility for busing should be directed to the Assistant Director of Transportation.

Due to longer instructional days, most “Feeder Schools” have additional ‘feeder days’ on which students will not be in attendance. The Holden, Ryley, Allan Johnstone and Lougheed Schools, as well as Cornerstone Christian Academy, are operating with a four-day week. Camrose and Area Early Childhood Development Coalition members are eager to share the results of screening done as part of the provincial Early Childhood Development (ECD) Mapping Initiative. The screening assessed the readiness of young children currently entering kindergarten in the following five key development areas: physical health and well-being, social competence, emotional maturity, language and thinking skills, and communications and general knowledge.

According to the results, 21.56 per cent of Camrose and Area kindergarten children are experiencing difficulty or great difficulty in the physical health

and well-being category. Physical health and well-being generally refers to a child’s diet, sleeping patterns, and energy levels. Why is physical health and well-being important? Being active helps young kids maintain a healthy body weight, improve movement, build learning and attention skills, increase fitness levels, build healthy hearts, and develop self-confidence.

There are many things parents, caregivers or guardians can do to ensure their child is ready for kindergarten. The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology sets guidelines for physical activity within various age ranges.

According to the guidelines, children aged three to four years should accumulate at least 180 minutes of physical activity each

day. The National Association for Sport and Physical Education goes further, recommending that young children should get at least 60 minutes of structured physical activity every day along with and 60 plus minutes of unstructured physical activity.

Physical activity includes both gross and fine motor skills.

Activities such as climbing stairs, moving around the home, playing outside, exploring the environment, crawling, brisk walking, and running or dancing, are great examples of gross motor skills. Fine motor skills involve smaller actions like picking things up between the thumb and finger. “The use of scissors in the household has dramatically decreased over the years and this

effect can be seen in many young children’s fine motor skills levels.

Although of course supervision is necessary, it is important that our kindergarten aged children learn this skill,” explains Kari Cameron, the Camrose and Area ECD Program Coordinator.

The physical health and wellbeing category also looks at a child’s diet. Children require a high number of nutrients to grow and thrive. The Canadian Food Guide is an excellent resource when trying to determine the appropriate diet of a pre-schoolaged child. A copy of the guide can be found on Health Canada’s website at www.hc-sc.gc.ab. Although a lot of parents struggle with their child’s eating habits, a useful way to assist them in having a bal-

anced diet is by being a good role model for healthy eating yourself!

“Turning off the TV and having meals together as a family is an excellent way to model healthy eating," Cameron explains. "If your child sees you eating your vegetables, he/she will be more likely to eat them too!"

She also recommends getting children involved in meal preparation.

There are many resources in the Camrose area that can be accessed to assist in ensuring that children are at their best physical health and well-being.

Founders Days Festival events are designed to connect our contemporary community to history, hopefully in creative and engaging ways.

Sunday, August 12, events take place at the Centennial Museum At 10:30 a.m. a worship service will be held in the historical St. Dunstan Church. This quaint little church was moved to the Centennial Museum grounds from the Bittern Lake area. Built of logs in 1908, it was financed by an English maiden lady, who invested $500 into its construction. Originally it was called Holy Angels and All Saints.

Camrose County celebrates 50 golden years

Everyone is invited to join the Camrose County in honouring the past 50 years on August 24 and 25.

"It is an exciting milestone for the county. It is an opportunity to recognize the people in the community who make the county strong and built it. That is what we want to celebrate with the civic awards," said Anjah Howard, Camrose County planning and development manager. "The prairie fun tour allows for several communities to show what has been done and offer a little history."

A fun golf tournament will start the celebration with a scramble style format on Friday, August 24, at Silver Creek Golf Course near New Norway. The 18 hole tournament is designed for golfers of all ages and skill levels. "This is intended to be a fun tournament and give people a chance to golf together and meet with neighbours while having some fun," said Anjah. "The maximum number of golfers we can have is 96, so we are hoping to achieve that."

The entry fee of $90 per person includes golfing, shared cart, steak supper and possible prizes.

Pre-registration is required by August 10 by emailing county@ county.camrose.ab.ca or phoning public works at 780-672-4449.

On August 25, from 10 a.m.

to 5 p.m., local producers and individuals will show their grains, flowers, produce and historic photographs at the CRE in a Heritage Harvest Showcase.

"This is similar to a bench show where county residents can show their products," said Anjah.

Categories include grains, flower arrangements, cut flowers, vegetables, fruits, berries and photographs.

This is a non-judged event where you can submit your best harvest, or check what your neighbours are up to. It is an opportunity to meet many of our local producers as they showcase the wide variety of products available within the county.

Driving tour

A prairie fun driving tour also will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on August 25. It is a selfguided tour of Camrose County where you can explore historic churches, schools and museums.

"The event is organized by the Canadian Northern Society and it was a two-day event last year," added Anjah. "You can pick up a touring map from local tourism information displays and follow along. If you don't have a lot of time you can pick and choose the events."

The 14-stop tour begins with the harvest showcase. Then it is suggested to go north to Hay Lakes to Telegraph Park where children are encouraged to fly a kite or create a wind catcher.

Historical displays, a visit at the solar-powered scouting cabin and geo-caching are some of the other fun activities.

Stop number three is at the Kingman Museum where history is mixed with some tea and refreshments. Then head south past Round Hill to the St. Stanislaus Church to absorb the religious heritage of the area.

Built from memory of homeland churches, this church features a beautiful ornate interior with gold trim.

Next, take the family to school. Children will enjoy learning how their (great) grandpa and grandma went to a one-room school on the prairie at the Hampton School. It is one of the few schoolhouses located on the original site.

Alberta's Littlest Airport near Kelsey will have a variety of radiocontrolled airplanes in action. A corn roast begins at 11:30 a.m.

Stop at the Camrose County Nature Centre to view the conservation area that was once a gravel pit. While enjoying the peace and quiet of nature, imagine the spot was once roaring with large

machines extracting gravel for the county roads.

Take a step back in time again when you stop at the Meeting Creek Railway Station and Elevator. View the 1913 railway station and check the elevator displays that have fascinating examples of early grain-handling practices.

The Bashaw Fire Hall Museum is the only restored fire hall still located on Main Street. It was also the home of the jailhouse that once housed Robert Raymond Cook, the last man to be hung in Alberta.

Now head north to Ferintosh to stop at the charming 1930s heritage home that is now the Ferintosh Manor Bed and Breakfast. The gardens are almost as famous as the manor.

Verdun School is the next stop on the tour. This school was the learning place for German settlers and was once named the New Berlin School. It was built in 1902 and serves as a classic example of one-room schools at the turn of the century.

A short drive takes you to the Peter Fidler Monument that honours settlers who crossed the Battle River as far back as 1792.

Peter was a Hudson Bay Company agent who traded with local natives.

The last two stops are the Duhamel Camp Site and the St.

Thomas Catholic Church. From the campground you can view where the Grand Trunk Pacific Trestle once spanned a kilometre long. Above the campground is the home of the 1883 church, which was once a Metis mission church.

A celebration banquet will also be held on Saturday at the Camrose Regional Exhibition, where you can connect with your neighbours over great local food and music. "The focus will be local food. We are working with local producers to provide a meal that is grown within the county," Anjah said.

Cocktails start at 5 p.m. with dinner to start at 6 p.m. A short program announcing the winner of the civic awards will take place prior to Danny Hooper’s Band hitting the stage at 8 p.m.

The civic awards will honour three county families or residents whose lives exemplify excellence and achievement. "The nominees are outstanding citizens of Camrose County who consistently contribute to the overall quality of life in our community," said Anjah.

Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased at the county office.

Electoral boundary changes proposed

Alberta could have six new representatives in the next federal election.

The Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for Alberta will be holding public hearings in September for residents to share their views on its proposal for new boundaries.

One of those hearings will be held in Camrose on Friday, September 14, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Norsemen Inn. "I'm very pleased that we are going through this exercise. In 2004, I was disappointed that we lost a good deal of our constituency such as Wainwright and Provost," said MP Kevin Sorenson. "Although we gained in the south, we lost in the northeast. It is a little different this time. We are gaining new seats, five or six, so this is a good reason for examining the boundaries."

Alberta will gain six electoral districts because of the increase in its population from 2,974,807 in 2001 to 3,645,257, according to the 2011 census. The commission proposes one new electoral district in northern Alberta, two new electoral districts in and around the city of Edmonton, two new electoral districts within the city of Calgary and one new electoral district in southern Alberta.

"Currently in my riding, I represent 126,000 people. Some MPs in Saskatchewan represent 60,000," explained MP Sorenson.

"Some MPs represent 40,000. I think it is a reason for doing it (examining the boundaries). When Alberta and the west can have more seats, that is a positive. It reflects the population growth that we have had."

The commission examines the boundaries of federal electoral districts by taking into consideration various factors such as population figures, communities of identity or interest, historical patterns, and

geographical factors. After consultations, the commission makes final decisions about where the electoral boundaries will be located.

"This is the first proposal and we will have a chance to examine it more and speak to the changes," said MP Sorenson. "To me, it seems to be more of a manageable constituency. I would have about 106,000 people in the constituency, if it goes ahead with the proposal the way it is now."

The changes could reduce travel time. "I have tried to manage my time in such a way that when I travel from Ottawa to Calgary, I can spread the weekend working in the southern part of the constituency," MP Sorenson said.

"Right now, it is not uncommon for me to travel three hours for a twohour meeting and then drive home for three hours."

The changes would cut down on some of that travel. "Prior to 2004, I lived in the centre of my riding. It (proposed changes) does help me personally, but that is not what this is about. The most important part is that we will have more voices from the west in Ottawa. I think the Highway 13 corridor leads to Camrose as a hub and I think the people that live down that corridor travel to Camrose and have a connection to the city."

MP Sorenson pointed out that many of those people work in Camrose and that some people who live in Camrose work out in those areas. "It makes sense, but it is just a proposal at this stage. The meeting in Camrose allows people to make a presentation. They can talk about what they like or dislike.

Site has been chosen for new ambulance station

Alberta Health Services will be building a new ambulance station in Camrose.

Emergency Medical Services central zone operations manager Andy Postma told Camrose City council July 23 a location for the new station has been determined and an announcement should be made shortly on the name of the contractor who submitted the winning bid.

AHS has been using temporary trailers on the north east corner of the St. Mary's Hospital parking lot since the discovery of mould in the main ambulance garage a couple of years ago. The trailers are just yards away from nearby residents, who have noticed fumes from the ambulances and generators that are used to provide power to the trailers, as well as the increased amount of traffic from trucks delivering water or pumping sewage.

"The toxic fumes moving downwind into our yards and all the noise create a zero desire to sit and enjoy our backyards or the outdoors at all," wrote Dave and

Lori Hering in a letter to Mayor Marshall Chalmers.

Alberta Health Services assumed responsibility from municipalities for ground ambulance in April, 2009, believing EMS to be a critical clinical service.

"Transitioning EMS into health has allowed us to standardize medical processes, ensure EMS practitioners are working to their full potential, improve utilization of the ambulance fleet, and provide enhanced educational opportunities to all EMS staff regardless of where they live," states an AHS website.

Postma noted that the EMS levels in the Camrose area are the same as or better than they were before the transition.

"Previously we had one ALS unit on 24 hours a day, seven days a week, one PLS unit on 24 hours a day seven days a week, and a peak unit staffed with myself and a casual member if they were available," said Postma. "Currently we have one ALS unit 24 hours a day seven days a week, a second unit that

is mostly ALS and occasionally PLS 24 hours a day seven days a week, and a peak unit staffed with casuals when they are available.

"We also have a paramedic response unit that if needed can respond to calls to assist crews or provide first response."

Of the 16 full-time staff members, 12 are now paramedics.

Statistics kept by Alberta Health Services show that the average ambulance response time, from the time the dispatcher receives a call to the time the ambulance arrives is just over five minutes. The wait time for ninety per cent of the calls is approximately 11 minutes.

"We have had mobile data terminals installed into our EMS vehicles," said Postma. "Part of the system has the ability for a crew member to see where the call is on the map. It also has a routing feature to direct the crew to that place on the map."

The mobile data terminal also displays information from dispatch.

"Where this is a significant advantage, I believe, is in the situation where we had the shooting in Killam," said Postma. "All the updates were put on there and all the EMS units that were responding to that call could see the information on the MDTs and the updates instantly."

Postma said EMS makes use of peer reviews and medical audits to see where improvements can be made.

"The medical audits are from the medical director, who goes over the calls and say yes you did a good job or maybe we can do this a little bit differently. This is to ensure the best possible care is given to our patients. Also it is used to identify trends and see if we need to change or update our protocols."

Camrose fire chief Peter Krich said the Camrose Fire Department works in conjunction with AHS to ensure that emergency services are available to residents in the event all the ambulances are tied up or responding to other calls.

Dessert Theatre Saturday Performances blending history with theatre have become a major international tourist attraction.

The Boomtown Trail, over the past several years has invested a great deal of resources to mentor communities in developing their stories and storytellers. Camrose and the Bailey Theatre are perfect backdrops to showcase these historical performances.

“Hello Dollies” Dessert Theatre will bring the Bailey Theatre alive with history next Saturday, August 11 at 7:00 p.m. Three unique, masterful storytellers, Glenys Smith, Mary Ann Lippiatt and Nora Smith will showcase authentic prairie characters, allowing the audience an intimate connection to the pioneer experience.

Theatre goers will be further indulged with two exceptional desserts catered by the Lefse House.

Celebrating our heritage

Months of hard work and planning will come to a head at the Camrose Founders Days celebration this weekend.

"We have a full lineup of activities," explained Camrose Founders Days committee chair Barb McDonald.

The celebration will get underway Friday morning with tours, at 10 and 11, of the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta.

A promenade starting from Candler Art Gallery at 12 noon will be followed by a ceremony at 1 at Founders' Square that will honour founders Signe Emilie Spokkeli Hills and Almer Julian Jorgensen Ofrim.

In the event of poor weather the ceremony will be moved to the Bailey Theatre.

A Founders Days reception and open house featuring Norwegian fare from the Lefse House and a City of Camrose display on the city's architectural fashions and fads will be held at the Bailey Theatre from 2 to 3.

Twelve Camrose restaurants will be serving samples of their own unique, mouth-watering house specialties as part of the second Taste of Downtown Camrose from 2 to 5. Try the chicken and pork souvlaki at Monte Carlo, spring rolls at the Saigon Rose Noodle House, a slice of pizza at Tripolis, Satay Chicken at Skyway Family Restaurant, or Doughboy's legendary mushroom soup.

"The Taste of Downtown Camrose last year went very well, and for many who attended Founders Days was the predominant topic of conversation," said McDonald.

Glenda Rott, who will be portraying Signe Hills, and Fay Carlson will be leading an Old Sparling Historical Walk from

the Campus Rose Inn Bed and Breakfast at 4602-49 Street beginning at 3.

The ever popular Graveyard Tour will be held at 7, starting at the entrance to the Camrose cemetery.

Friday's activities will end with a Camrose Ghost Walk that will visit make stops at several Camrose locations that have been the site of reported supernatural activity, including the Bailey Theatre, Alice Hotel and Camrose Railway Station.

"We're going to meet in The Brick parking lot at 8:30," said Camrose Founders Days committee member Janine Carroll, who will be leading the tour. "It's going to be fun to talk about the unusual happenings."

Local artisans and crafters will be conducting demonstrations and the Camrose Genealogy and Horticultural Society will be setting up a display under a big tent at Camrose and District Centennial Museum on Saturday, starting at 11.

"We felt it would be good to move the tent to a different location this year after having it at the Camrose Railway Station for the last several," said Carroll. "It's not a bad idea to shake things up every once in a while so that people will keep coming back year after year."

Morley Riske and his Swing Band will be performing in the tent from 1 to 4.

"That is one of the most popular events of Founders Days," said Carroll.

"They have a following and people just love listening to the big band music that they play."

Saturday activities at Camrose Railway Station Museum and Park starting at 10 will include rides on the Mirror Lake

Express, a firebox family festival, a white elephant sale and telegraph and Morse Code demonstrations, and Camrose Olympics.

A children's show is scheduled to begin at 1.

The Friends of the Station will be serving home-made baked pies in the Railway Station tea room.

Nature will meet Camrose history in a Battle River Watershed Alliance tour of Mirror Lake that will get underway from just outside the Mirror Lake Visitor Centre at 2.

The Camrose Founders Days committee, in partnership with the Boomtown Trail and Camrose Railway Station, will be presenting a dessert theatre production entitled Hello Dollies at 7.

"It's a three-part drama/documentary in which three performers will be taking on the roles of three women who lived in the early part of the 1900s," said Carroll.

Dessert for Hello Dollies will be provided by The Lefse House.

Sunday events will include a 10:30 church service led by the recently retired Reverend Ray at Camrose and District Centennial Museum.

"Orlene Wigglesworth, an accomplished Camrose musician, will be performing on the archival organ in the historic St. Dunstan Church," said Carroll.

A Diamond in the Rough Fashion Show and Tea Party from 1 to 3 at Camrose and District Centennial Museum will show a fine selection of hats, as well as vintage clothing and shoes, modelled by local young ladies. Refreshments will be served by Malories Cakes and Catering.

Meet Nathalie and friends just outside the Bill Fowler Centre, adjacent to Mirror Lake Park, for this fascinating look at our local urban water system.

Signe Spokkeli Hills and Almer Julian Jorgensen Ofrim will be honoured at this year's Camrose Founders Days celebration.

Signe Spokkeli Hills was born to Norwegian settlers John and Juri Spokkeli on January 20, 1886 on a farm near Moorhead, Minnesota.

She moved with her parents to the Camrose area in 1895.

Signe received her early education from Eurastis Taylor, a bachelor from Quebec who was hired by Stoney Creek settlers. She later attended Stoney Creek Schoolhouse, built about five miles south of what would later become downtown Camrose. As more settlers arrived, the schoolhouse was replaced by a larger building and renamed New Salem School.

In 1902 and 1903 Signe attended high school in Edmonton. After completing high school she attended Normal School in Regina, where, in three months, she earned her interim teacher's certificate.

Signe's first teaching assignment was just north of Camrose at Lake Demay. She also taught at New Salem School and the Sifton rural school.

Signe was hired to teach at the first school in Camrose in 1905. Her teaching career came to an end in 1907 when she married Irving Hills, with whom she had two children, Myrtle and John.

Signe died in August, 1988, at the age of 102 years.

Almer Julian Jorgensen Ofrim was born in Loken, Norway, and moved to Camrose in 1906, where he immediately joined a work crew building the Langbell Hotel (later called the Heather Brae Hotel) for Jacob Langbell. He also worked in Michael Haugen's blacksmith shop and created for himself a reputation as a wellknown and distinguished blacksmith.

In 1911 he entered into partnership with Thomas Fowler, opening a blacksmith shop opposite the Town Hall. In 1918 he left blacksmithing and opened a hardware

store with Adolph Maland. Their partnership and business that would be part of the Camrose business community for over 40 years.

Almer married Amelia Knutsvig on New Year's Eve, 1919. The couple had four children: Robert, Marie, Dennis and Alice.

Almer was credited with locating the first ski slide near Banff in 1917. The next year he broke his leg on that same ski jump.

Almer was active in Messiah Lutheran Church and the Board of Trade, and was a life member of the Chamber of Commerce. He took an active part in the local ski club and was a hunting enthusiast.

He passed away in 1964, and was buried at the Camrose Valleyview Cemetery.

Other Camrosians who have been honoured at Founders Days are: Duncan Sampson, Dr. P.F. Smith, Walter William Ashton "Blue" Smith, Francois Adam,

Hiram Burgar, Will and Charlie Duggan, Dennis Twomey Sr., George P. Smith, Ole Bakken, Frank Farley, Frank P. Layton, John W. Russell, Chris Langbell, Camille David, Charles Burrows, Frederick Pratt, M.A. Maxwell, Rev. T.T. Carlson, and Carla Didrickson-Hoyme.

Camrose Founders Days celebrations have resulted in many legacies, including: the addition of historical street signs (Adam Street, Alberta Avenue, Bakken Street, Prospect Avenue); the construction of Founders Square; the construction of an Ole Bakken sod/log house at Camrose and District Centennial Museum; festive bunting decorations; and a database of historical houses.

Camrose Founders Days founders are chosen based on their contributions to the community. The Camrose Founders Days committee always welcomes information about early Camrose residents.

Vernon William Dimma Vernon William Dimma, 65, was born on December 24, 1946 and passed away peacefully on July 28.

Vern is survived by his loving wife Linda, children Irwin (Janice), Randean (Toby), and grandchildren Lexi, Irwin, Kade, Kiya, Keira and Max. He is also survived by his sisters Debbie (Denis), Darlene, and brother Grady (Marg), as well as five nieces and nephews. His presence in our lives is a gift we will always be thankful for.

A huge void will be felt in the lives of many who had the priviledge of knowing him. Vern was a friend to everyone, and will be missed by many, especially Wayne Baswa. Vern was easy going and loved his life with his family and friends. Throughout his life he got a kick out of weight lifting, kick boxing, running, hunting, quading, snowmobiling, and riding his motorcycle through the mountains.

A memorial service will be held soon.

Orville William “Bill” Martin Bill was born in Gouveneur, Saskatchewan on August 20, 1919, the seventh and youngest child of Elizabeth and Ronald Martin. He spent his youth on the family farm near Cadillac until moving to Rocky Mountain House with his parents in 1937. In 1940 Bill interrupted his aeronautical mechanics training at the Institute of Technology and Art (now SAIT) in Calgary to enlist in the RCAF and served in the UK, France and Belgium. In 1948 he married May Clague and they farmed in the Bashaw area before moving to the farm north of Camrose where they continued to farm with his brother Lloyd and Lloyd’s wife Ella. Bill and May retired in 1976 and enjoyed a full life of travel and family until May’s passing in 1992.

In 1997 Bill married Ruby Borgstrom Woods and added ten daughters and a son to his family. With Ruby he again enjoyed many days of travel and camping, dancing and community activities.

Bill was predeceased by his wife May in 1992; his father Ronald in 1948; his mother Elizabeth in 1969; his six brothers and sisters; and his nephew Al Walker in 2010.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Woods Martin; his daughters, Betty (Tim) Shaw of Calgary and Pat Martin of Perth, Australia; three grandchildren, Tilman Schafer-Martin of Perth, Australia, Allison (Neil) Brigden of Edmonton, and Eric Shaw of Calgary; two greatgrandchildren, Samantha and Miles Brigden, and ten nieces and nephews and their families.

Bill will also be missed by Ruby’s daughters, Terrie Lynne (Allan) Luckwell, Jeannie (Terry) Bell, Karen Bowes, Leona (Glenn) Capeling, Myrna (Dale) Fankhanel, Linda (Terry) Jones, Orlene (Ted) Wigglesworth; and her stepdaughters, Colleen (Randy) Trautman, Kay (Steve) Innes, Pat (Lloyd) Odegard; stepson Larry Woods; and over thirty stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at 2:00 p.m., from Messiah Lutheran Church with Rev. Erik Parker officiating. Inurnment has taken place in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose.

2012 Chevrolet Cruze Car of the Year

Lightning does strike twice in the same spot. For the second time this golfing season, two people shot a hole-in-one on the same day, on the same hole.

On Tuesday, July 31, Rhonda Anderson fired a 110-yard shot that sank on number 11 using a six iron. Joan Petz accomplished the same feat using an 11 wood.

Both ladies are regular members at the Camrose Golf Course.

Kim Roberts also shot a hole-in-one, on number four using a seven iron on Sunday, July 22.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROJECTS RFP Affordable Housing Program The City of Camrose is issuing a request for proposals for Affordable Housing Program projects within the City.

UNIDIRECTIONAL FLUSHING PROGRAM Unidirectional Flushing is a method of cleaning the water mainlines through a network of flushing sequences with the water being discharged from a fire hydrant. The flushing of the pipes will dislodge and remove mineral deposits, sediments and biological deposits that accumulate over time.

The City of Camrose implements the Unidirectional Flushing (UDF) Program to: - maintain and improve the City’s water quality.

In 2009 the Government of Alberta committed to contributing to the development of over 11,000 affordable housing units by 2012. Block funding was allocated to the City of Camrose under Alberta’s Affordable Housing Program and, in an effort to utilize 1.7 million dollars of residual funds that are still available, the City is seeking proposals for Affordable Housing Projects in Camrose.

Train allowed local leaders to recruit

A Light Into the Past, a History of Camrose 1905-1980) The board of trade in Camrose decided in 1912 it was in the town's best interests to plan a publicity tour of Ontario and northern United States.

Local leaders, mayor Frank Layton, former mayor Dennis Twomey, MP George Smith, president of the board Jabez Harris, Frank Farley, Watson Younge, M.A. Maxwell, Camille David and J. Sherman Fox travelled in an agricultural car that covered between 5,000 and 6,000 miles, stopping at 33 centres, for a cost of $10,000.

The tour tried to recruit both businessmen and families to move to Camrose.

Education

The Camrose School, with principal John Russell, expanded 1911-12 from its four-room brick building to include four extra rooms as it began to teach high school. Not all of the rooms were yet required for public school purposes and an agreement was made with the provincial government to rent a couple of the vacant rooms upstairs for the accommodation of Normal School students.

A teaching certificate could be obtained by completing a two month course and the first class of 20 students graduated by Christmas. This arrangement was in place until the Normal School was built in 1914.

Mr. Russell left in 1913 and the original school burned down in 1950. When it was re-built in 1952, it was named the John Russell School.

Camrose Lutheran College commenced its first school year on October 2, 1911, with classes held in two Lutheran churches and the Heather Brae Hotel served as a dormitory and boarding club. Meanwhile, the construction of a permanent building was underway on the southern outskirts of Camrose.

The superstructure was erected in the summer and fall of 1912 and was ready for the second academic year beginning on October 21, 1912. The building commonly known as Old Main was named Founders Hall.

In 1912, Camille David brought in the Toronto Glee Club to perform on the David Theatre stage. Other important events were a Leap year dance and a masked carnival.

Dairy products

Carl Edin, who had a herd of four or five cows, and who lived in northwest Camrose, began to distribute milk by the ladle or pitcher. A year later milk was sold in cans and it wasn't until 1921 that milk was sold in bottles. Jabez Harris built a creamery north of Mirror Lake in the vicinity of the present Battle River School Division office. In 1912, Harris Dairy Products also opened a warehouse in Edmonton. The business was a forerunner of a number of dairy operations in the years to follow.

Blacksmiths

Michael Haugen was one of the first blacksmiths in Camrose.

However, he drowned in Dried Meat Lake in 1911 and several blacksmiths scrambled to start businesses to fill the void and the growing need due to the increase in the number of horses.

Thomas Fowler, who previ-

ously owned a blacksmith, and Almer Ofrim opened their business opposite the town hall in 1911. Prior to going into business with Tom Fowler, A.J. Ofrim operated a blacksmith shop in Haugen's old stand. Then J.J. Smith took over the original Haugen stand. After five years, Mr. Ofrim went into partnership with Adolph Maland in the hardware business.

Blacksmiths soon gave way to garages. The automobile was beginning to show signs of becoming popular in 1912. Charles B. Eltrich was selling Mitchell cars and Goodyear tires and soon L.E. Martin was in the McLaughlinBuick car business in an old livery barn, which was later called the Pioneer Garage.

Farming equipment

John Wright began selling Deering machinery around 1909.

In 1912, he joined with a man named Hartman to bring about Wright and Hartman. Hartman, in 1915 had a company named Hartman and Cooper at which time Wright may have left the company. Later a business was formed using the name L.L. Hartman Implements.

In those days McCormick and Deering operated their own individual factories. In 1909, Deering Machinery became known as the John Deere Company. McCormick then joined what was left of the Deering company to form the International Harvester Company.

Tannery

Francois Adam built a tannery prior to 1908. It was expanded shortly after to double its capacity and in 1911 it was again increased in size to add a show factory.

Whether or not the tannery developed to this stage is not known because in 1912 it burned to the ground with a loss of $30,000. It was not covered by insurance and Adam did not re-build it.

TractorCanada tour stops in Camrose

Shortly after the Fram Ski Club was formed in 1911, it became home to several races and events. In the fall a ski jump was erected and the 40-foot tower was completed on January 5, 1912.

The first ski jumping tournament was held and a $.25 admission was charged. They didn't go home disappointed as local favourite Adolph Maland was the first winner with jumps of 69, 70 and 74 feet.

On February 17, 1912, tournament skiers from Edmonton participated and as the scaffold had been extended another 10 feet, a jump of 91 feet was recorded.

Jewellery store

In 1912, Peter Borud, who was born and educated in Norway, arrived in Camrose and opened his jewellery store in the middle of the east side of the first block south of the CPR station. He spent most of his time devoted to optometry and left the jewellery store to his nephew Edward Nelson who called it Nelson's Jewellery Ltd. It was later left to son Ron. Cleaners

The first steam laundry was operated in Camrose in 1912 and was owned by C. Van Trakranen.

A second laundry was started a year later by Lars Larson.
