Mail Order Annie Inside Special Occasions Page 8

Between 1905 and 1925 thousands of women made life-changing decisions. They travelled to the great western prairies of Canada to meet and marry complete strangers.

Women in Business Page 11

Mail Order Annie is a brilliant stage play, paying tribute to the ladies who arrived in search of adventure, romance, homes and families. These brave women helped shape the future of a nation. Local director Sandra McLay and a talented cast will entertain two audiences as they present the adventure of one young bride as she passes through a rural prairie railway station in 1923.

The second show (not a dessert theatre) will take place Sunday, August 11 at 2 p.m. at the Bailey Theatre. Camrose welcomes Kamifurano visitors By Murray Green

The valued friendship between the City of Camrose and the Town of Kamifurano, Japan, continued as local residents greeted a group of community leaders and junior high school students on July 28 at the Camrose Resort Casino. "Since the friendship started back in 1986 with former mayor Rudy Swanson, we have enjoyed many visits. We hosted high school students at first and we have enjoyed the Kamifurano friendship ever since," said Camrose and Japan Friendship Society president Michiko Rasmussen. "We hope the students have had a good experience with our host families. I wish the best for the rest of your tour. I thank the host families for their generosity. It is truly appreciated." Former Camrose Composite High School principal Max Lindstrand played a huge role in the first trip by people from Kamifurano. "I was first approached to host eight students and one teacher. Since that time, thanks to Michiko, we have organized five student trips to Japan," said Max. "Without Michiko's involvement over the years, this friendship would not have remained as it has been over all of these years. It is a very warm friendship. Thanks to the Town of Kamifurano for the warm hospitality in the trips we have taken to Japan. We hope you have enjoyed your short stay in Camrose as well." Mayor Marshall Chalmers brought greetings on

behalf of the city. "I hope that you found the sites interesting and the citizens of Camrose very welcoming," Marshall said. "In 1985, the City of Camrose and Town of Kamifurano joined to become sister cities. We have formed bonds and have had a close relationship ever since. There are unique traditions and cultures that both communities possess and it's through visits such as this one that allow us better understanding and appreciation of each other." Superintendent of schools in Kamifurano, Hisakazu Hattori, brought five chaperones and 11 students to Camrose. "We were excited to experience Camrose and Canada," said Hisakazu. "We were also looking forward to meeting all of you. Staying with host families developed relationships with Camrose and Kamifurano. We appreciate the hosts and the work Michiko has done to make this visit possible. I hope this visit makes the friendship stronger." Battle River School Division chair Doug Bowie welcomed the educational exchange as well. "We appreciate your presence and hope your stay has been worthwhile and enjoyable," Doug said. "Our school division has a long history with Kamifurano and Japan. We have all benefitted from his (Max Lindstrand) work in exchanges. We have had many student exchanges and Japanese students attend school in Camrose. This relationship is a success because of everyone's hard work."

Charlie Killam School principal Thomas Midbo, left, and Kamifurano superintendent of the board of education Hisakazu Hattori exchanged friendship gifts. Inset: Camrose Mayor Marshall Chalmers learned to keep peace with Japanese students.

Charlie Killam School band members Talia Dewalt, Danielle McAfee and Juanita Hohm performed four songs for junior high students from the Town of Kamifurano.

Photos by Murray Green, Camrose Booster

Camrose and Japan Friendship Society president Michiko Rasmussen welcomed the guests to Camrose.

Kamifurano junior high students informed Camrose residents about some of the features of their region in Japan during a welcome reception on July 28.

Myles Bogstie of the Camrose Spirals uses his hands to jump, while Taytem Syrnyk, left, and Tashina Bogstie handle the ropes in a demonstration for the visitors.

MLS# 3342656 8 minutes from Camrose on pavement – “a hundred miles away from neighbours and city traffic. As you make the turn off of Hwy. 26 (the correction line) and enter the paved lane to the 2,412 square foot home, which could be yours, you have to momentarily “remember to breathe. The setting, the exterior of the brick and stucco home, the landscaping, trees and the vegetable garden could easily appear on a page of a calendar. Inside the Cape Cod style home, you will be wowed by the warmth of oak throughout, whether it’s in the cozy media room or the formal dining room which features brand new flooring. The wood burning fireplace and new masonry work is particularly impressive. You will find high quality doors and windows – all highly energy efficient and beautiful. The kitchen is a masterpiece in design with a fabulous, new kitchen island which contains a countertop stove with exciting new

“pop-up exhaust filtration system. By the way, the granite is spectacular! Your dishwasher is built in. It’s no surprise that the appliances and laundry equipment are all top-of-the-line. A spectacular custom-made oak staircase leads you to the second storey of your dream home which features three bedrooms. There is a deck off the southfacing master bedroom. You’ll sink in the upgraded broadloom carpeting. You will love the convenience of the massive walk-in closet, and the private bathroom – one of three in this executive quality, no-smoking home. The skylight floods the upstairs with soothing natural light. A recently updated boiler heating system has been installed, with no expense spared. You’ll love the ability to have instant hot water on demand! Your garage represents every man’s dream. With two full-size vehicles inside, the cavernous garage still looks “empty. You will love the ingenious vegetable storage locker. Outside is a concrete

parking pad. You will almost hate to leave the house, or the beauty of the new professionally designed sidewalks, and other decor enhancements but a walk outside, past a strategic shelterbelt, yields a view of several wellmaintained outbuildings. The 32’ x 48’ quonset with upper floor, is a real treat and will prove to be extremely handy for you. You also get a 24’ x 48’ and a 24’ x 64’ metal-covered pole shed, a garden shed, small pumphouse, feed shed and a corral system with roughed-in waterers. With this property being 31.5 total acres, 20 of these in a bountiful hay crop, this is a perfect place for horses or other livestock or specialized farming (small plot). The reliable well produces well over 10 gallons per minute with additional water available from a dugout on the northeast corner of the acreage. Despite the quality, the luxury, the space, and the setting, taxes are very

low at just $2,287 per year. The asking price, though you could never duplicate what is offered at this amount, is just $775,000. For a private showing or for more information, contact the property owner Seb Stang, 780.678.6841, licensed associate with

PEN POINTS by Berdie Fowler

Preparing for Electronic Voting Interest in the upcoming civic election is perking and the aroma of electioneering coffee is in the air. Imminent is the declaration of another candidate running for a seat on Camrose council and also a Dan Jensen story, (in this issue of The Booster) which outlines some significant changes regarding the voting process. In previous civic elections in Camrose, counting the votes has taken many hours, thus making results unavailable to the electorate until the next morning. This fall’s election is expected to be different. Because of plans to replace pencils and paper ballots with electronic voting machines, the results should be known in about an hour after polls close. The returning officer and her assistant have become familiar with the operation of the electronic equipment and have reported that it is very userfriendly; they both agreed that it is very simple to use. During the month of September, voters will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the machines if they wish to do so. Electronic voting has been successfully used by other jurisdictions in previous civic elections. There will be other changes in this fall’s civic election. It is important to pay early attention to the requirements for personal identification for two reasons: some of them may take a while to get; and, most importantly, if you arrive at the polling station without them, you will not be able to vote. How disappointing would that be? Nomination Day for civic elections in Alberta will be held on the third Monday in September for mayor and councillors of cities, towns and villages, county councillors, and school board trustees. Election Day will follow on the third Monday of October. We can’t repeat too often that our participation in elections is vitally important to each of us, Why? Because the decisions made by those elected will affect every one of us – for better or for worse. To have your voice represented on council or school board, offer yourself as a candidate, or nominate someone that you think would make thoughtful decisions on the basis of reliable information and, of course, by casting a vote yourself on election day.

We as Albertans are faced with a disturbing problem, in that one of our MLA’s while on official business of the Redford government and our province deliberately committed a crime while in a foreign country. This was obviously a rehearsed act with all the pathology of a criminal act that allowed the police to charge him. Now I would encourage this MLA to seek help for what is obviously a compulsive and subjugating craving. The problem: though the people of his riding and this province see this as an affront to their integrity, reputation, and government, the PCs remain disconcertingly silent. There appears to be a bit of confusion on the part of the Premier and her government as to their role in our society. They have been entrusted by the people of this province to pass laws, uphold those laws, and then when necessary to enforce those laws equitably and rationally while living and encouraging the highest moral values. When those involved in positions of government allow inattentiveness to moral, ethical, and criminal lapses, it creates an eroding of the moral fibre of the government. To understand the severity of silence on the part of the govern-

ment, one only has to look at the quagmire that government silence has caused Quebec. Therefore I have a question to address to the Premier and our MLA Doug Griffiths. As one who has supported government, the rule of law, and moral excellence, I need to know what it is I would be supporting in the PC government? Rob Johnson Daysland The debate continues It is interesting to read the interpretations of people regarding our City’s finances. Thanks to David Kotyk for his contribution. Most recently, Mr. Kotyk uses a semantic argument to downplay Council’s effort to eliminate the accumulated debt of the golf course which had built up over a period of years due to successive deficits. The fact remains that Council used city funds to eliminate the golf course liability (debt) (negative reserve). The City of Camrose will incur a $4 million debenture in 2013 to pay for some of the cost of constructing the Camrose Performing Arts Centre. There may be need for additional borrowing if the fundraising efforts fall short of the target. Preliminary reports regarding the fundraising are encouraging. There is no intention to increase debt in order to fund the construction of a new City Hall. The project is to be funded entirely through the use of reserves ($1 million) plus grants from the province. This funding will be in place prior to the new City Hall opening in 2015. Council HAS REDUCED DEBT! In 2007, the debt (not including the golf course) was about $31 million. As we began 2013,

that debt had been reduced to about $22 million. So debt has been reduced by at least $9 million. During this year, we will take on a $4 million debenture (CPAC) and pay about $2 million toward the debt. By year’s end, the debt should be about $24 million. This could grow by as much as $2 million if the fundraising campaign has a shortfall. Has debt been reduced? YES! It is also noteworthy that by 2015, the City will enjoy two new facilities – a Performing Arts Centre and a new City Hall. These will be enduring assets for our city. We recognize that property taxes in Camrose are a concern. However, comparing taxes is not as simple as it may seem. Mr. Kotyk focuses on only one of the two key variables involved in determining the taxes that we pay. The two variables are tax rate and assessment. Mr. Kotyk’s argument would be irrefutable if property assessments were the same throughout the province, but they are NOT! Since property assessments are based upon market value, the same home may hold an assessed value of $400.000 in one community and $450.000 in another. Unfortunately Mr. Kotyk fails to consider the assessment variable. Having said that, it is still vitally important for future councils to continue to “hold the line” to ensure that our property taxes are competitive with other communities. It was not my intention to enter into a back and forth debate. However, I am hopeful that my letter, Mr. Kotyk’s response, and my further response will generate further discussion on matters pertaining to the city that we all care so much about. This type of dialogue is central to democracy. Max Lindstrand, Camrose

Nominate someone who makes life better for people with disabilities Nominations are now open for the Premier's Council on the Status of Persons with Disabilities Awards, which recognize Albertans who create communities that are inclusive of people with disabilities. Nomination packages are available on the Council’s website or by calling 1-800-272-8841. There are six awards: the Gary McPherson Leadership Award, the Marlin Styner Achievement Award, and four Awards of Excellence in the areas of educa-

tion, employment, community and public awareness. The Gary McPherson Leadership Award is presented to an exceptional individual who has helped enrich the lives of people with disabilities. The Marlin Styner Achievement Award will be presented to an individual living with a disability who has demonstrated outstanding achievement. The Awards of Excellence recognize individuals, teams or organizations that have shown a commitment to the full

inclusion of persons with disabilities as demonstrated by their actions in one of the four award areas. Since 2003, when the awards began, there have been 50 award recipients. Anyone can nominate an Albertan for these awards. Nominations for all awards are open until September 30. Award recipients will be formally recognized in their communities, often at events coinciding with International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3.

Chris Zamora, Owner Global Pets

…a special summer feature In Camrose and area a significant number of women hold positions of power and prestige. Many others own their own small businesses or are key players in their respective companies. The Camrose Booster is profiling some of the best, the brightest and the most prominent women who work, employ and lead in the community of which we are all so proud. Watch for profiles in summer issues of the home team paper! If you would like to be a part of our next women in business issue, please call The Booster, 780.672.3142 and ask for Mike, Jeff, Sue or Ron.

Chris Zamora has seen firsthand the value of feeding her two dogs and cat quality food and treats. In fact this is how Chris, now a franchisee of stores in Camrose and Wetaskiwin, first got introduced to Global Pet Foods – a Canadian company 150 stores strong! Two of Chris’s three siblings also own and operate Global Pet Foods stores! Global Pet Foods sources and sells private label, natural and holistic foods that are priced right. These foods must contain all natural ingredients and have no artificial preservatives. Many brands are exclusive to the chain and are from Canadian manufacturers. This policy certainly matches Chris’ philosophy for the feeding of Ella (a Maltese), Morgan (smooth Collie) and Simon and Magoo – her Siamese cats! While Chris sells premium pet foods and an impressive assortment of pet treats and supplements, toys and accessories, a lot of her customers drop by her store on 48 Ave. in Camrose for pet advice or just to talk about their animals (which are very much welcome inside). As one passionate about animals, she can easily relate to problems others may be having. Chris is a huge supporter of the Battle River Protection Society, a member of the Chamber of Commerce in Camrose and Wetaskiwn, and loves spending time outdoors with her husband, Paul, a firefighter. In her spare time she enjoys the company of four-legged friends and knitting.

Battle River Credit Union

While most businesses think of themselves as highly efficient, Battle River Credit Union has data to back up the claim. With eleven branches and a corporate office serving over 17,000 members, the corporation runs “lean and mean” with a staffing level of 100 personnel. It’s notable that 83% of these individuals are female. So are 9 of 22 individuals in management or executive positions of responsibility! With a reputation for attention to detail, ladies clearly hold many key positions in this major player in Alberta banking. Battle River Credit Union is ranked as the fourth largest Credit Union in Alberta and 45th largest Canada-wide. In terms of profitability the organization really shines – in 2012 the corporation made a profit of over $11 million (before taxes and profit share). Almost $7.2 million was returned to the member-owners! Being a clearly popular choice for mortgages, business and consumer loans, and a variety of savings plans, Battle River Credit Union has grown to current status by providing competitive or better rates, convenient hours of operation, strategically placed branches and, naturally, something else females are highly regarded for – caring and comprehensive client service. All staff members recognize the importance of being in “smalltown Alberta,” typically communities unappealing to the chartered banks. If sharing in banking profits and joining the Credit Union movement sounds like a better way to bank, drop in, look around and have a chat. Female and male alike, we’re here to prove our members matter most!

Effie Longhe & Maureen Young Fine Framing

It’s understandable that most small business owners have an undying interest in their product lines and they end up channeling their hobby into that line of work. When that person goes into the same business twice in a life-time you know they really, really love the field. Such is the case with Effie Longhe. In 1998, passionate about picture framing, she bought Fine Framing & Such. The shop, operated by Effie, quickly earned a reputation for great work at competitive or better pricing. In 2003, Effie sold her business to move to Ardrossan which allowed her to live closer to her son, Rob, and his family. Six years later, Find Framing was listed for sale. Effie and Maureen joined forces and finances in reacquiring the business! Today, the gals are doing what they love to do….selling thread, cross-stitch supplies and other craft necessities. Mostly though - wonderful framing of anything and everything (including silverware, jerseys, wedding memorabilia and once, as odd as it sounds, a piece of toast!) Effie and Maureen love the creativity, pleasing customers and the variety of day-to-day business life. As Maureen describes it, “We surround ourselves with happy people; then the job is easy!”

Lyndsey Delwo, Realtor

Central Agencies Inc.

To call Lyndsey Delwo ‘busy,’ might be the understatement of the week! Lyndsey readily admits her move to Camrose and to Central Agencies Inc. have been two outstanding life decisions. She’s inspired by the leadership and community support of the Mayer families. She feels blessed to work amongst fellow Realtors who have unwavering integrity and values. She emphasizes: “I work in a terrific office with a terrific reputation!” Though she started her career in Edmonton, her 2009 relocation to Camrose, really was a launch to her success in the trade. Lyndsey explains: “Camrose sells itself! Our city has so much to offer in education, arts, recreation and quality of life. It’s a breeze to get around by car, or by using our remarkable trail system. Our parks are remarkable. I just can’t imagine living anywhere else!” Clients of this busy professional are perhaps the best testament of her ability and reliability: A fair bit of my new business is based on referrals sent by former clients. Pam Reber,Owner,

Wisemen’s Way Bookstore Pam doesn’t feel it was really a choice for her to buy the well- established Christian business in downtown Camrose … it was more like a calling. “I really felt that this was the way that I could better help people learn about the Truth and to get to know God.” The little bookstore at the end of main street has seen numerous changes since Pam assumed ownership five years ago. For starters, don’t let the name fool you. There is a lot more than books on the shelves. Pam continually adds more inventory and there is now a huge selection of Christian music, movies, jewelry, church supplies, Sunday school and VBS curriculum, toys, books/ bibles, framed pictures and giftware for just about any occasion, including Baptism, Dedication, Confirmation, First Communion, Weddings and more. “We try very hard to please our customers”, notes Pam. “And we want them to find exactly what they are looking for. If we need to place a special order to make that happen, that’s just fine.” “Declaring His Glory” is our motto at Wisemen’s Way Bookstore, and we want to assist our customers to do the same by providing them with all/any Christian supplies that they may need to glorify God and spread the gospel.”

Culture Minister announces funding for Tour of Alberta By Dan Jensen

Alberta Culture Minister Heather Klimchuk announced $500,000 in provincial funding for festivals and events surrounding the September 3 to 8 Tour of Alberta during a press conference at the Bill Fowler Centre July 27. Alberta Culture will provide $250,000 for entertainment and cultural experiences in communities along the Tour of Alberta route while Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation will provide $250,000 for a culinary experience involving Alberta food products, producers and professional chefs. "The Tour of Alberta will be an incredible celebration of Alberta culture as we and the world watch top international athletes compete in our own beautiful back yard," said Klimchuk. "The Tour of Alberta is a wonderful opportunity for our communities and our province to shine. Like the Tour de France, the festival experience will showcase the vitality of all our communities." Klimchuk said the cultural events and culinary themes at locations along the Tour of Alberta route will highlight smaller communities and show everyone what our entire province has to offer. "We will tell the story of an Alberta as an extraordinary and diverse experience. Thousands of Albertans are employed by our culture and tourism industries across the province. They contribute significantly to our economy every year. Our investment today in cultural tourism will go beyond this event into communities directly along the route. It will have a lasting impact on the future strength and growth of these sectors with local audiences, with Albertans as well as national and international audiences. By

telling our remarkable story we can show the benefits of investing in Alberta. We can demonstrate our inclusive culture and quality of life as we have in our province." Klimchuk said culture

connects us as individuals one to another. "It connects us to our communities, to the world beyond our borders, and to the world of possibilities. Culture is a window through

which the world sees us. I can't wait for the opportunity to share Alberta's story with the world." Tour of Alberta received its initial seed money of $3.5 million from the Rural Alberta Development Fund. "There was a group of very dedicated professional cyclists in Alberta that had a dream," said Rural Alberta Development Fund board member Dave Coutts. "They worked on that dream for a long time without any appreciable results. They worked closely together with the Rural Alberta Development Fund and they put together a package that suited all the pillars that the Rural Alberta Development Fund was built on. What it talked about was how we can take regional communities and band them together so that they work towards one common goal – to put on the best

cycling competitive event and send it to the world. Coutts said the Tour of Alberta is going to benefit all Albertans, whether they are in cities, towns or hamlets. "We are all going to band together and put our best foot forward as Albertans. We are going to show the world how great we are and we are going to show the world that as individual communities we have our own uniqueness but together we are Alberta." Travel Alberta vice president of community relations Wynn McLean said the Tour of Alberta is an opportunity to take the incredible landscapes and authentic experiences we have in the province and showcase them to a world wide audience of 100 million by television. "Travel Alberta is pleased to be an active partner in this. We have an incredible province and this is an incredible vehicle to show it world wide." Alberta Agriculture Food and Rural Development Minister Verlyn Olson congratulated the Rural Alberta Development Fund for its wisdom in choosing to support the Tour of Alberta. "We want to tell the story of rural Alberta. The premier challenged me about a year ago when I was appointed to raise the profile of agriculture in rural Alberta and I can't think of a better way of doing it than two hours a day on Sportsnet and reaching 100 countries and 30 to 40 million people. This is just an amazing opportunity. It is going to give us the chance to tell the story of what life is like out here." Details on the food themes, culinary experiences and entertainment for each day of the Tour of Alberta will be announced in the weeks leading up to the event, and will be available on-line at www.tourofalberta.ca.

Eyes of the world will be on Camrose September 4 By Dan Jensen

The eyes of the world will be on Camrose Sept. 4 when it hosts the finish of the first leg of the Tour of Alberta. Sportsnet in Canada will broadcast two hours of the race live each day and feature a daily highlights program. Internationally, details are being finalized to have the tour broadcast in the U.S., Europe, Asia, Australia, Central and South America. "We just received a report last week from ING, which is the company we have hired to distribute our broadcast world wide and we are estimating we are going to be in a minimum of 100 million households," said Duane Vienneau, executive director of Tour of Alberta in a press conference at the Bill Fowler Centre July 27. ers are confident that Camrose will be able to stage a successful welcome for the cyclists. "We wanted to go to a community that we knew could pull it off," said Vienneau. "Camrose has a good track record of hosting many successful events, including the Big Valley Jamboree." Mayor Marshall Chalmers said Camrose is excit-

ed to welcome the world to Camrose. "We are privileged to be part of the first pro cycling tour event in Canada. We will have 120 world class athletes and their entourage finish the first stage of the Tour of Alberta in our great city. This includes 15 of the best professional cycling teams in the world and many who just participated in the Tour de France. We will

anxiously await at the finish line area where the festival atmosphere will allow fans and spectators to be engaged all afternoon with entertainment, activities, and, of course, the vendors." Travel Alberta vice president of community relations, Wynn McLean, said the choice of Camrose as the first ending spot for the race was a brilliant decision. "I am a native son and this city can carry off events like nobody else." Tour of Alberta Camrose organizing committee chair Todd Markowsky said he is excited about Camrose receiving international exposure. "I had a bit of an inkling when I heard that this event was coming that there would be some significant television exposure, knowing how cycling is projected with the helicopters and the onboard

motorcycle cameras. I knew that would be a great opportunity for this community. I have heard of other races that have happened in other parts of North America where people have watched the races and then inquired about those communities as a place to live or a place to start a business." The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), cycling's governing body, awarded the inaugural Tour of Alberta with a 2.1 sanctioning in September, 2012, making it one of the highest level pro cycling events in Canada, and one of the highest level events in North America. "It is part of the UCI calendar," said Vienneau. "It is the same race as the Tour de France, and it is the same as the Tour of Utah and Tour of California." Continued on page 29

Sons of Norway enter parade The Sons of Norway Ronning Lodge had three vehicles in the Camrose Chamber of Commerce BVJ Kickin' Country parade. A 1930 Ford Model A owned by Art and Ann Reiten was accompanied by a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado carrying Clarice Jury and Hazel Erga dressed in full Norwegian costume, and a red Cadillac owned by lodge president Lloyd Reed. The Sons of Norway Ronning Lodge has participated in the Camrose parade the last two years. "We had two vehicles in the parade last year, one of which was a Mustang convertible," said Sons of Norway member Lyle Erga. "We sold the Mustang convertible or we would be using it again." Erga feels the parade is a great way to promote the Sons of Norway and what it does. "A lot of people who watched the parade last year told us later

that they didn't know we still existed," said Erga. The Sons of Norway has a history in Camrose that goes back to the 1920s when one of the members was Art Reiten's father. "It was at one time a very large organization," said Ann Reiten. "We had the building across from the ski hill and we had a youth group in the 1980s that taught Norwegian crafts and the Scandinavian heritage." In the 1980s the Lodge had a Lutefisk supper which some claimed was bigger than the one in Kingman. The Sons of Norway Ronning Lodge gives scholarships to family members of members who are in good standing. One of the recipients was Lyle and Hazel Erga's grandson, Stefan, who two years ago studied in Sweden. "Some people receive the scholarship more than one time," said Ann. "It all depends on their studies."

Leader wears gold jersey By Dan Jensen

Tour of Alberta chair Brian Jolly unveiled the Autumn Gold leaders' jersey for the inaugural year of the Tour of Alberta during a press conference at the Bill Fowler Centre July 27. "The leaders' jersey is the yellow jersey normally but it is the Harvest Gold jersey here as far as we are concerned," said Jolly. "Everyone wants to see the guy in the yellow jersey, and it is a remarkable thing to have. I have worn a few in my time when I was a lot younger but they were gold or yellow jerseys. I know what it feels to carry one. It is a big burden to the guy who has it on his back because he has to defend it for five or six days." The official mascot for the inaugural Tour of Alberta will be Swifty the Fox. "Until recently the swift fox was a locally extinct species in its home province of Alberta, Canada," stated a

Tour of Alberta press release. "This fascinating animal is not only intelligent and crafty but is incredibly fast. With these facts combined, the citizens of Alberta can consider themselves lucky to ever catch a glimpse of the rare creature. That is, until the Tour of Alberta came across someone very special." Not wanting to embarrass the pros, Swifty has decided to level the playing field and will cycle instead of simply running past the cyclists. "Road cycling is a new sport for the fox, who is used to his usual speedy scamper through the prairies of Alberta," stated the release. "He will be learning the new skills of proper bike safety and protocol, and wants kids to learn along with him. He looks forward to getting to know Albertans on a more personal level – especially the youth of Alberta."

Marshall moves on to Manhattanville By Murray Green

Graduating Camrose Kodiaks' forward Nolan Marshall is off to college. Nolan, one of the Kodiaks' captains, accepted a scholarship to play for the Manhattanville Valiants in the NCAA. His coach will be Arlen Marshall in September. “We are very proud of what Nolan has accomplished. He deserves this, as he has worked very hard to obtain a scholarship. Manhattanville has just got itself

a future captain and a great young man with character and determination and a will to succeed," said Camrose coach and general manager Boris Rybalka. "Nolan was a great leader here in Camrose and he has shown many young men what it takes to succeed. We wish Nolan all the best in the New York area." Nolan scored 14 goals and collected 43 points during the regular season last year.

Fall election will have a few new wrinkles By Dan Jensen

The City of Camrose will be doing away with the traditional pencil and paper ballot in favour of electronic voting machines in the 2013 municipal election. "We're going to be renting them from a company called Elections Systems Software out of B.C., said Camrose returning officer Kim Isaak. "We talked to a lot of other municipalities which have used electronic voting systems and their name came up quite often." The City of Camrose plans to have the machines on display at Mirror Lake Centre throughout the month of September so that people can become familiar with them and there aren't any misundertandings when it actually comes time to vote. "We will be able to show people how they work and how simple they are to use," said Isaak. Assistant returning officer Jenny Wallace said the machines are simple to use. "It is a very good system. Kim and I had the opportunity go over the machines with someone from the company and we couldn't believe how user friendly they are." The new machines should speed up the time that it takes to get results on election night. In previous

"It's going to be important for people to recognize when they are voting that the person they are going to be voting for (if elected) is going to have a term of four years." years, election workers have counted ballots until 3:00 in the morning. "We should have the results within an hour of the polls closing," said Isaak The number of municipalities that still use the old paper and pencil method for voting are becoming increasingly rare. "Some of the municipalities I have talked to told me they have been using electronic voting systems for quite a while and would never go back to the old ways," said Isaak. A technician from Elections System Software will be in Camrose on election day in the event any problems arise. Other changes Camrosians will see a number of other changes in the election. Term – The term for elected officials has been increased from three years to four. "It is going to be important for people to recognize when they are voting that the person they are going to be voting for is going to have a term of four years," said Isaak. "It is a change that is

happening across the province." Proof of Identity – Section 53 of the Local Authorities Election Act now includes a requirement for a voter to provide proof of identity and current residence in order to vote. "You need to show one piece of photo identification such as an operator's/driver's licence or a government photo identification card," said Isaak. Voters who don't have photo identification may use an attestation of residence issued by the responsible authority of a supportive living facility, a bank/credit card statement or personal cheque, correspondence issued by a school, college or university, government cheque or cheque stub, pension plan statement of benefits, contributions or participation, utility bill, residential lease or mortgage statement and a vehicle ownership or insurance certificate. A full list of acceptable identifications is available on the City of Camrose website. Nomination papers – Candidates must produce

the signatures of five people who are nominating them with the packages they submit on nomination day, September 23. "If they only have four signatures the returning officer now has the authority not to accept the package," said Wallace. "Before the returning officer could not refuse a package if it only had four signatures. Now, under the Local Authorities Election Act, if you don't have five electors sign your form the returning officer shall not accept it." Nomination drop-offs – Nomination package dropoffs will be accepted at the Camrose Fire Hall between 10 a.m. and 12 noon, rather than at the Mirror Lake Centre. "The way the Mirror Lake Centre is set up it is difficult for people to come in and get parking," said Isaak. The City of Camrose will again be handling the nomination papers of candidates seeking the position of Elk Island Catholic School Division trustee. Nomination papers for the office of trustee for Battle River School Division No. 31

must be filed at the division office, located at 5402-48A Avenue between 10 a.m. and 12 noon on September 23. Voting stations on election day will be set up at Sparling School gymnasium, the Mirror Lake Centre auditorium, Camrose Community Centre/Field House, and Camrose United Church Hall. Workshops The Society of Local Government Managers, through Alberta Municipal Affairs, is providing workshops that will give potential candidates an understanding of the election process and the obligations and rights that are associated with local government and municipal election activities. Workshop locations include Wainwright August 27, Edmonton/Nisku August 28, Calgary August 29, Lethbridge September 4 and Grande Prairie September 7. All workshops will run from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. The City of Camrose is offering on-line training to anyone who wants to assist with the election. "We are encouraging people to do the training," said Isaak. "Even if they don't have access to a computer they are welcome to come here to the Mirror Lake Centre and we will set them up."

Augustana welcomes professors from university in China

Welcoming professors from Lianhe University of Arts and Science in China to the Augustana campus of the University of Alberta last week were (front centre) Augustana Humanities chair Dr. Kim Fordham Misfeldt, Dean Dr. Allen Berger and Learning and Beyond coordinator Leslie Lindballe. By Dan Jensen

Ten professors from Lianhe University of Arts and Science in the Gansu province of China will be spending the next two weeks at the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta attending lectures and soaking up Canadian culture. "They will be attending a series of lectures on second language pedagogy, educational psychology and Canadian culture, as well as attending English as a Second Language (ESL) classes," said Leslie Lindballe, coordinator of Augustana's Learning & Beyond office. The professors are involved with the Lianhe

University's ESL program and teach subjects that include English, Chinese literature, computing science, biology and anthropology. "For most of us this is our first time abroad," said Guo Ning, who is an English instructor. "We are looking forward to having some good communication." The immersion experience (three weeks in total) is a carry-over from a visit to Augustana by another Lianhe University scholar, Lichun Liang, a year ago. "She made the bridge and introduced our university to your university," said Ning. Augustana dean Dr.

Allen Berger extended a warm Camrose welcome to the visitors in a reception on the second floor of the Forum building July 29. "We look forward to developing with you the same kind of friendships that we have with Lichun and we look forward to a close working relationship between our two universities," said Dr. Berger. "We think there are many benefits for us in this relationship and we hope equally as many benefits for you." Berger feels the relationship that is being built by Lianhe University and Augustana will lead to many new opportunities in the future.

"Out of that connection I hope the next steps will involve student exchanges, faculty exchanges, possibly collaborative research projects. Lichun, when she was here, encouraged someone from Augustana to visit Lianhe University, so I would hope that we would have opportunities to negotiate other kinds of exchanges and other kinds of collaborations. One possibility that would be an obvious benefit to Augustana is if we could send a delegation to China to have the kind of experience that their faculty are having here at our university. We will try to develop those kinds of opportunities."

Some of the activities the visitors will be attending are a presentation on a week-long canoe trip (inspired by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission) involving six aboriginal and six non-aboriginal women, Music on Main, an informative session on bats at the Stoney Creek Nature Centre, Founders Days, a movie at the Bailey Theatre and karaoke at Rusty Spur. On August 14, they will be giving a presentation on their trip at the library from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. "They will share information about their part of China and give their reflections on their experience in Canada," said Lindballe.

Powerfully efficient

The available 3.6 litre Pentastar V6 with Variable Valve Timing and Flex Fuel compatibility is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with first-rate noise, vibration and harshness control. The award-winning

ers and classic-design details supplement the innovative conveniences. UConnect

engine provides an exceptional 285 horsepower, 260 lb.-ft. of torque and impressive fuel economy of up to 6.8 litres per 100 km on the highway. The 2.4 litre I-4 16-valve engine, when paired with the available six-speed automatic transmission with Auto/ Stick, features dual Variable Valve Timing and provides solid performance and fuel efficiency with 173 horsepower and up to 6.5 litres per 100 km on the highway. Front MacPherson struts and rear multilink coils allow individual articulation between front and rear wheels over varying road surfaces for a level ride. Large-diameter front and rear sway bars, stiffened body mounts and soft

ride rate all pave the way for a smooth and controlled response. Everyday indulgence

High-comfort, style and technology merge harmoniously with premium seating, soft-touch surfaces, soundabsorbing treatments and ambient LED lighting. The bolstered seats, available in either premium cloth or leather-faced, feature available eight-way power driver adjustments. The intuitively placed controls integrated into the available leather-wrapped steering wheel allow you to operate the radio, cruise controls, available voice command features, and other vehicle functions without having to change hand or eye placement. Illuminated cup hold-

Uconnect acts as the central hub for your most important media, allowing you to stay connected, informed, entertained and focused on driving. Voice command allows you to use your voice to select AM/FM radio stations or Sirius XM Satellite Radio channels, as well as make/receive calls and select destination entries with the available navigation. You'll have multiple ways to access audio, including a USB port, IPod control with voice command, Bluetooth streaming audio, and Sirius XM Satellite radio, which features song/artist alerts, game alerts, favourites, and replay (first year of service is included). The available intuitive Garmin navigation can locate nearby restaurants, shopping, hospitals, or points of local interest, and provides easy-to-understand directions, including lane guidance. Top it all off with a system that is clever enough to synchronize with your phone's address book – up to 1,000 entries – every time you get into your vehicle and you'll see how easy it is to keep in touch with the people, music and devices that matter most. Safety

An abundance of safety

and security features helped the 200 sedan earn a Top Safety Pick award by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. In adverse conditions, Electronic Stability Control and Brake Assist work with an all-speed traction control system to help maintain vehicle stability, limit oversteering or understeering, and automatically apply brake force when needed. Specifically designed front and rear crumple zones help absorb energy and redirect it away from passengers, helping to reduce the risk of injury in the event of a collision. Advanced multistage driver and front-passenger, supplemental-driver and front-passenger side-seat, as well as supplemental sidecurtain air bags provide enhanced protection. A warning light in the instrument cluster notifies you of any low tire pressure. The tire pressure monitoring display alerts you of individual tire pressure for all four tires and is part of the Electronic Vehicle Information Centre. You can see the 2013 Chrysler 200 at Camrose Chrysler on Highway 13 east, Camrose. Phone 780672-2476 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

Wildlife and Stewardship Society heads to Camrose Railway Museum By Samara Froland, Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society coordinator Last Thursday people joined the Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society (CWSS) for a presentation and garden tour at the Camrose Railway Museum and Park with Glenys Smith. For the past 14 years Glenys Smith has been the Chairperson and Operations Manager for the Camrose Heritage Railway Station. She has developed extensive gardens at the station with the intention of replicating the railway station gardens of the early 20th century which were used to convince immigrants to settle at that location. Glenys introduced the evening with a story called “Tree Song” by H.E. Stewart. The story illustrates the changes of the life of a Sitka spruce due to European settlement in North America. “We humans need to again become stewards of the land by restoring, maintaining and enhancing the natural habitat on our properties,” concluded Smith. Glenys incorporates the principles of Naturescaping and organics in her work. “We need to ensure that all animals have a place as well as humans in our world.” “NatureScaping has to do with beauty and it has to do with function. It is using native plants that are appropriate for

this climate and soil,” said Smith. “They recommend that you put sea holly in every garden,” said Smith. Glenys demonstrated how certain plants, including sea holly and yarrow, can be used as a natural pesticide, because they attract predatory bugs. Glenys promotes organic fertilizer use. “Each fall we receive 200 bags of leaves from the Little Yard Company which we cut fine with the mower, mix with organic composed manure, organ-

Glenys emphasized the importance of observing the conditions of an area before deciding what to plant there. “You want to put the right plant in the right place,” she said. CWSS’s environmental educational program ends this week with a presentation called “The Flying Mammal”, which takes place on Thursday, August 8, at 7:30 p.m. at the Stoney Creek Centre. Dr. Doris Audet from University of Alberta, Augustana Campus will present on bats. Following the presentation Doris will lead a short walk to find bats using an echolocator.

Performing Arts Centre recognizes Mayer family Submitted

“All the world’s a stage” begins Jacques, in the famous monologue from William Shakespeare’s As You Like It and we in Camrose “like” that we will have a world class stage in our community in 2014. We also “liked” having a conversation with Norm Mayer regarding his family’s generous gift to the Performing Arts Centre.

The famous Shakespearean monologue continues, “one man in his time plays many parts” and Norm, has a strong desire to see his city flourish and plays many “parts” in giving back to the community whenever he can. Norm and his wife, Betty, raised their family in Camrose. Their business, Central Agencies, will celebrate 50 years this fall. As a business owner,

a former mayor of the City, and a remarkable behind the scenes volunteer with many organizations in Camrose, Norm “likes” the idea of a Performing Arts Centre in Camrose “to complete the amenities that attract families and business to our area.” In this spirit, the Mayer family provided the first philanthropic gift to the fundraising campaign last

fall with their generous gift of $500,000. The multipurpose space adjacent to the main performance chamber will be named the Mayer Family Community Hall, in recognition of this significant gift and the family’s commitment to community. It also aptly describes the community access and use we anticipate this multipurpose room will deliver to the various user groups and

citizens in the community on a day-to-day basis in the future. Norm invites fellow citizens to get involved in this important community project as it will help “transform our community in a positive way with the economic, cultural, family and tourism benefits increasing the quality of life for citizens of Camrose”.

Activities for everyone this Founders Days weekend By Dan Jensen

The pieces are coming together for the annual Founders Days celebration in Camrose. "We will have something of interest for everyone," said Camrose Founders Days committee member Janine Carroll. Friday

Activities will get underway at noon, Friday, August 9, with a main street promenade starting from Candler Art Gallery. "Let yourself be thrown back in time, dust off your bonnets and derbies, and join us for our retro parade," said Carroll. A Founders Days opening ceremony honouring educator, scholar, diplomat, veteran and decorated citizen Chester Ronning will be held in the Bailey Theatre from 1 to 2 p.m. "People will be able to meet and greet founders' family members as well as committee members," said Carroll. "Take this opportunity to meet new friends and old." The ceremony will be followed by a reception featuring ethnic Norwegian treats provided by The Lefse House, coffee by Tim Horton's and juice by McDonald's, and tours of the theatre. Battle River Watershed Alliance members will be providing a look at our water system in a one-hour long nature and history exploration tour starting from the Bill Fowler Centre at 2:00. The tour is designed for everyone from one to 100 years old. A historical walk around the oldest residential neighbourhoods in Camrose will be led by Glenda Rott, in character as Signe Spokkeli Hills, first Camrose school teacher, will begin at 3 p.m. "Signe is a very entertaining lady who brings the Old Sparling community to life in this one and a half hour walking tour," said Carroll. "She will entertain with stories of classrooms long past." A Valleyview Cemetery tour starting at 7 p.m. will see John Person provide interesting facts about the local cemetery and how our burial grounds differ from those in other countries. A ghost walk featur-

Val Sims as a porter, Peter La Blanc as farmer John Proctor, Maeve Marentette as Clare Proctor, and Lindsay Aiken as Annie will be starring in the play at the Bailey Theatre on the Saturday night and Sunday afternoon of Founders Days. The play was written by Canadian playwright Carl C. Cashin. His storyline takes place in Saskatchewan but it is a story that could have taken place anywhere across the prairies, even Camrose.

ing stories gathered by the "ghost lady" will depart from the Edgeworth Centre parking lot at 8:30 p.m. "Visit some of Camrose's infamous haunt spots," said Carroll. "Since they are scattered across the city we encourage people to ride one of the two buses we'll have available." The buses will make their first stop at the Valleyview Cemetery to pick up those who were part of the cemetery tour. Saturday The Camrose Railway Station will play host to an old-fashioned garden party from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. "Enjoy the taste of scrumptious homemade pie while listening to the wonderful big band tones of the Station Band from the garden gazebo," said Carroll. "Old-fashioned games, old-fashioned crafts, face painting and a full day of trains. Ride the Mirror Lake Express free of charge, watch G scale model trains wind around the Railway Garden communities, and have your picture taken with a Percy-like engine. A delicious Whistle Dog lunch will be available on site.

Food will be sold according to menu price, but all activities are no charge." A new event this year is the Camrose Vintage Garden Tractor Show, which will be taking place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Best Western Camrose Resort and Casino parking lot. "This is an excellent event for the mechanical members of the family," said Carroll. "Vintage, antique and rear garden tractors for all years, makes and models will be displayed, along with toy and collectors' tables and fun activities and games for the entire family. The day will wind up at the Bailey Theatre at 7 p.m with a dessert theatre performance of Mail Order Annie, the story of a young bride who passes through a rural prairie railway station in 1923 and makes her way through the years of the Great Depression. "The play is dedicated to the thousands of mail order brides who braved the journey to Canada's great western prairies between 1905 to 1925 to meet and marry complete strangers," said Carroll. "Some came in search of adventure and

romance, others a simple home and family. Whatever the reason, these brave women helped shape the future of a nation. Follow the adventure of one young bride as she passes through a rural prairie railway station in 1923 and follow her unique life on the prairies – the depression years, Second World War and the return of post-war prosperity." Not one but two delicious decadent desserts will accompany the theatre show, catered by The Lefse House. Tickets for the show are available from the Railway Station, Bill Fowler Centre, or Bailey Theatre, or by calling 780-672-3099. Sunday Camrose and District Centennial Museum will host a full day of activities starting with a community church service in St. Dunstan's Church, led by Rev. Ray at 10:30 a.m. "There is so much to see in the museum village: vintage vehicles in the Fire Hall, and The Camrose Canadian as it used to be," said Carroll. "Visit the blacksmith shop, garage,

RCMP, machine building, oldtimers' hut, Mona Sparling building, the Lugs 'N Cleats building, sod hut replica, the Likeness School, St. Dunstan's Church and the pioneer home." The museum will also be the site of a Camrose and District Horticultural Society display of midsummer flowers, berries and veggies, as well as historic society memorabilia, including early minute books and photo albums. "Please join the Horticultural ladies for delicious 100th anniversary cake and refreshments," said Carroll. Camrose Country Opry members Marge Pudlowski, the Norton Metcalfe Trio and Doug Ezeard will be performing live music at the museum from 1 to 5. The Camrose Vintage Garden Tractor Show will move to the Norsemen Inn parking lot to continue the fun. A children's tractor pull and award presentations will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. An encore performance of Mail Order Annie minus the desserts will be held at the Bailey Theatre starting at 2 p.m.

A portion of his childhood was spent on a homestead near Bardo. In 1927, Dr. Ronning became principal of Camrose Lutheran College, living the next 15 years a few blocks from the College with his wife Inga raising six children. During this time, Chester Ronning took up painting, sculpting and also directed several choirs. He left this position during the Second World War and served in Intelligence. Smelquist earns a spot at World Triathlon Championship By Murray Green

Evan Smelquist qualified for the 2014 World Triathlon Championships in Edmonton by winning his age group in a qualifying provincial event hosted by the Edmonton Triathlon Academy on June 23. The Camrose athlete was third in swimming, first in cycling and first in running to capture the men's 35 to 39 sprint division. His finish earned him a spot on the Team Canada roster at next year's championships next August. "I wasn't planning on entering three events in consecutive weekends, but Tom (Thomas Smith) talked me into it," said Evan, who is glad he did. Dr. Smith of Camrose placed ninth in the men's 45 to 49 division. He was sixth in swimming and in biking, but was 14th in running. His good showing put him on a waiting list as a spare.

"By winning my age category, I will be representing Canada next year and that is a great honour," added Evan. In the Olympic distance for men 45 to 49, Kelly Bauer of Camrose placed third overall. Kelly was fifth in swimming, third in biking and third in running. Former Camrose resident Andrew Leoni was fifth in the men's 30 to 34 age group. Andrew was 12th in swimming, sixth in cycling and third in running. Dean Threinen of Camrose placed 16th overall with an 18th in swimming, 12th in biking and 12th in running. "I have a little over a year to prepare. There are some strong Europeans in the event. But, with it being held in Edmonton, you don't know who is going to show up," explained Evan. "Knowing the course in Edmonton

and getting to sleep in your own bed will make a huge difference to me. When you go somewhere, you usually have two lackluster sleeps before the race. Having family cheer you on is a definite motivator too." The local triathlete attributes his hard work in the pool to his improvement in the events. "I really improved my swimming and that makes a big difference. For some reason in Edmonton my running was slower, but I was able to make up for it in swimming," said Evan. "The biking was harder going up Emily Murphy Hill and up Groat twice, so it may have taken a toll on my running." Evan garnered the top spot in the Lake Summerside Triathlon in Edmonton on June 16. He came in third in the Outback Events Half Iron Triathlon in Sylvan Lake on July 23

in an attempt to repeat as the champion. Beth Fraser of Camrose placed 89th. "It was cold and windy in Sylvan Lake and it was hard to bike, but I still had a better run, so you never know," added Evan. "That's racing. You just hope it all comes together for next year." The triathlete was excited to receive an email saying he is on Team Canada. "It is a cool feeling that you will be representing the country. It gets you hyped more so than at a regular meet where people don't really care where you are from," said Evan. "Being a provincial champion and racing for Canada will be a pretty neat experience. You get a little swag with it such as riding gear for the year, Team Canada track suits, socks, hats and whatever else with Canada on it. Not very many people can say they represent the entire country, so I'm honoured."

Evan won the Cross Cancer Institute Triathlon at Half Moon Lake on June 8. Connie Jenkins and Thomas Smith also competed in the event. "I will continue to train and work on my running and strength. I will finish the summer season and then start preparing for next year in October," Evan said. "In the winter it is harder to train on the bike. From September to April I will work on my swimming more, so when the weather improves I can get on the bike more outside." Evan plans to get a little mental rest in late August and early September before refocusing for next year. "With the world's in late August, rather than trying to qualify in June, it gives me another two months to train," explained Evan.

Axemen win pitchers' duel in last home game By Murray Green The Camrose Axemen played an almost perfect game to knock off the Sherwood Park Athletics 4-0 in the North Central Alberta Baseball League at Harry Andreassen Field in Kin park on July 30. In a pitchers' duel, the Axemen received great pitching from Blair Mulder to shut out the Athletics. Going into the contest, Sherwood Park was tied for first and Camrose was tied for second place. The victory vaulted the Axemen into sole possession of second place, while the A's fall back to a third place tie with Westlock. The Edmonton Blackhawks remain in first by a few percentage points with a 11-4 record. Camrose improved to a 12-5 mark. Paul Ofrim, John Kelndorfer and Luc Riopel represented the Axemen in the annual all-star game. Camrose will play in the league semifinals in Westlock on Aug. 17 and 18. Although their opponent hasn't been decided, the semifinals will be a best of three. The winners of the semifinal matches will advance to the league final series at the home of the team that finished higher

Mosquito Reds earn silver medals at provincials By Murray Green

The mosquito Cougars Reds squad garnered silver medals at Baseball Alberta provincials in Stony Plain on July 21. The Sherwood Park Athletics broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the last inning with three runs. Camrose fought back with a run, but came up just short in their final chance. "I was impressed with the way all of the players progressed throughout the season," said coach Scott Sitler. "They came a long way from the beginning of the year.

They peaked at the right time. We really had a good team, great bunch of players and the parents worked well together." Graydon Gotaas, Jon Griffiths and Gaven Galenza all pitched well in the final match. In the opening game of the provincials, Camrose was down 9-1 before mounting a terrific comeback to defeat Red Deer 14-12. Griffiths came through in the clutch with the game winning hit in the bottom of the last inning. Gotaas,

Isaac Maron and Evan Williams played well on defence to make the comeback bid possible. Camrose had little trouble with the host Stony Plain team and ended the game early, 16-6. Blake Sitler and Dylan Soch pitched well on the mound and Soch helped his own cause by going three for three at the plate. Ty Marushak also made an incredible throw to make a great play on defence. In a rain-shortened game against Sherwood Park, Camrose won 10-5.

The Camrose Cougars Reds mosquito baseball team captured the Tier 5 provincial silver medals in Stony Plain on July 21. Members of the winning team are, back row from left to right, coach Ryan Galenza, coach Scott Sitler and coach Terry Maron. Middle row from left to right, Gavin Galenza, Ty Maruschak, Jon Griffiths, Blake Sitler, Jed Good and Isaac Maron. Front row from left to right, Dylan Soch, Evan Williams, Graydon Gotaas, Reno Sitler (batboy), Ty Storbakken and Thomas Ashton. Missing is Kelsey Thomas and manager Terry Soch.

Marushak, Galenza and Griffiths all hit home runs in the game. Griffith hit a grand slam to have a good day collecting RBIs. Williams also pitched well. The victory earned Camrose a spot in the final. The Cougars Reds were coached by Scott Sitler, Terry Maron, Ryan Galenza and managed by Terry Soch. The Camrose Cougars Royals mosquito club, coached by Bob Charchun reached the semifinals before being eliminated from the Tier 1 provincials in Okotoks on July 26 to 28. Camrose edged St. Albert 9-8 in the opening game. Camrose lost a close 5-3 match to Sherwood Park and lost 16-2 to Okotoks. St. Albert defeated Camrose 9-4 in the semifinals to eliminate the Cougars. Okotoks went on to beat St. Albert 12-2 in the final. The peewee Cougars Royals, led by coach Darryl Zimmer, competed in the Tier 1 provincials held in Okotoks on July 26 to 28. Camrose dropped a 17-7 contest to the host Okotoks squad in the first outing. The club rebounded to play well in the game against the East Central Bulls (Veteran), but came out on the short end of a 6-4 score. The Cougars won their next two games 21-11 over St. Albert and 14-4 over

Sherwood Park, but it wasn't enough to advance to the playoff round. The Bulls won the final 9-6 over Okotoks. Coach Brian Hoglund led the peewee Cougars Red squad in Tier 3 provincials in Red Deer on July 19 to 21. Camrose edged the Edmonton Angels 13-12 in the first game. St. Albert beat Camrose 14-5 in the second game to force a tiebreaker rematch. This time Camrose came out on top of a 17-7 score. In one of the semifinal games, Camrose lost 18-8 to Red Deer. The host team went on to win the provincials with a 14-0 victory over Barrhead. The bantam Cougars Reds squad, coached by Doug Schoenknecht, and the Heisler Cardinals played in the Tier 4 provincials in Whitecourt. The two local clubs met in the first game for both teams and Heisler emerged as 8-7 winners. Camrose lost a tough 17-14 game to Calgary, dropped a 10-4 match to Fort Saskatchewan and 12-2 to Whitecourt to end their season. Heisler lost 10-0 to Whitecourt, 10-3 to Fort Saskatchewan and 11-7 to Calgary to have the same fate. Calgary defeated Fort Saskatchewan 11-7 in the final.

Eyes of the world will be on Camrose Continued from page 12

The cyclists will do three and a half laps of the city's downtown core, before finishing at the Rudy Swanson Recreational Park. The route will take them down main street, across 48 Avenue, past Augustana, west up the hill towards the recreation grounds and the new Rotary Centre, past the hospital and the Wildrose Co-op. "The City of Camrose and the police department and emergency services have been working diligently and are just incredibly supportive of this whole project," said Markowsky. "They have an incredible plan laid out for this." One cyclist on which Camrose spectators will want to keep an eye is Canadian Ryder Hesjedal, who rides with the GarminSharp team. "In 2012 he won the Giro d'Italia, which is the Italian equivalent of the Tour de France," said Markowsky. "He is slated to be here along with the Garmin-Sharp team." Spectators will also want to watch the Orica GreenEDGE team, from Australia, which led its category for the first week of the Tour de France. The average speed for cyclists on the first leg of the tour will be between 40 and 42 km an hour. "When they come in to the sprint, close to the finish line, they will be reaching speeds of more than 60 km/hour," said Markowsky. The Camrose Tour of Alberta festival will begin at noon on the day of the race at the Camrose Recreation Centre and continue until the race ends. "There will be lots of activities for those who come out," said Markowsky. "We are going to showcase local entertainers and entertainment and also provide opportunities to sample some different types of food." Major sponsors of the Tour of Alberta Camrose festival include ATCO and Camrose Chrysler. The Tour of Alberta Camrose organizing committee was distributing cowbells at Jaywalkers' Jamboree which they are hoping spectators will clang when the cyclists pass them on Camrose streets. "We are encouraging and wanting to be alongside the road," said Markowsky. "The more noise you make the more bells you ring the more signs you have the more ridiculous costumes you have the greater the chance that you could be on television."

Fresh fruit, vegetables, pecans, and raisins all helped add to her canning inventory. Upon returning every spring Berneice would try to master the new Arizona craft market trend. She loved her trips into Mexico and California as well. Whether she was down south or at home on the farm, Berneice was always prepared for company with fresh coffee and baking. Gladys Priscilla Rozema, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, great-greatgrandmother, sister and aunt passed away peacefully on July 15, 2013 at the age of 92 at Rosehaven Extended Care in Camrose. Gladys was born August 2, 1920 to proud parents Eva and Ernest House. When Gladys was twelve she was blessed with a younger sister, Jean, who at the time was the ‘little sister’. But as time went on the bond between the two girls grew and their close friendship would be unbreakable. At the age of 20 she met and married Hendrick (Hank) Rozema. A few years after their union, first daughter Carol Anne was born. The young family immigrated to Canada, landing them on the farming land in New Norway. There, their little family grew with the arrival of their second daughter, Hendrika (Ricki) Jacoba. Never one to shy away from hard work, Gladys helped work the farm until it was time to move to the ‘city’. The family packed up the ol’ homestead and moved to Camrose. In Camrose, Gladys found work at Rosehaven, where she was employed for 26 years caring for those who needed the help. Ironically, it is here that she found the comfort of her last days, quite possibly from some of those whom she may have trained in her employed years there. She truly knew how to live, love and laugh. Her true passion was for travelling. Not a year went by that she wasn’t jetting off somewhere to see and share the sites of the world. By plane, by ship, by bus or by car – if it could take her on adventures, she was always eager to go, and bring home with her the stories of all she had seen and done. Spending time with her family, when she was at home, was where she wanted to be. Left with her memories are her children, Carol Lampreau of Edmonton and Hendrika ‘Ricki’ (Steve) Ewanchuk of Edmonton, twelve grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, one greatgreat-grandchild, sister Jean (Irvin) Bjornson of Camrose, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Alice Parmelia Dunnigan In memory of Alice, our mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother and friend, a woman who touched many in her ninety-six years of life. We miss that light, and ever will, Her vacant place there’s none to fill. Down here we mourn, but not in vain, For up in Heaven we will meet again.

To further prepare for employment, she completed a business course offered at Camrose Lutheran College. Upon graduation she worked at the Red and White Grocery store as a bookkeeper. She married Louis Francoeur on December 25, 1941; yes, Christmas Day, during a short leave from the air force. Edna was a very busy stay-at-home mom from 1943 until child number eight was in school 21 years later. Besides raising eight children she found time to be active in the Royal Canadian Legion, the Catholic Women’s League and the Order of the Royal Purple. She also enjoyed bridge club. When youngest son Don started school, Edna began keeping the books for the family business, Alberta Machinery, first with husband Louis and brother-in-law Paul, then with sons Maurice and Rob. In 1985 the business accounting became computerized and Edna chose to retire at age 64, partly to avoid the computer. However, Edna became addicted to several handheld computer games and wore them out, all the while complaining of sore thumbs. Edna liked to travel and went on many extended winter vacations until approximately 1997 when Louis became ill. Edna’s quiet time passion was crossword puzzles; she did them in newspapers and books and wore the pages out of several dictionaries. Edna was known to give herself tirelessly to her family, friends and her favorite organizations. She remained active in her community particularly within the Royal Purple where she held several executive offices. The generosity of her time extended to driving herself and friends to events and appointments. I’ll bet she is using her new wings to get others around Paradise right now. Edna avoided recognition and being the recipient of kindness or gifts seemed to cause her embarrassment. She gave her love and it was multiplied and returned by all who were part of her world. She often chuckled as she told others, “It is more blessed to give than to lend and it amounts to the same in the end.” We will all miss you! A prayer vigil was held on Sunday, July 28, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. from the Burgar Memorial Chapel. A Mass of the Resurrection was held on Monday, July 29, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. from St. Francis Xavier Church with Rev. Larry Pederson as celebrant. Cremation followed services with inurnment taking place in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. Memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the Elks Purple Cross Fund, or St. Mary’s Hospital Palliative Care, or to a charity of one’s choice. Twenty first BVJ gives fans what they want Clockwise from left, headliner Neal McCoy put on a great show to start the weekend on the right note. Jarrod Niemann followed McCoy with a good show. A large crowd gathered for the kick-off. Jess Moskaluke entertained the Big Valley Jamboree visitors on Thursday night. The Bulls for Breakfast provided some spills in the mornings. The great music had people dancing in the aisles during a sold out music festival from Aug. 2 to 4.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Canada works on new trade strategy Kevin Sorenson, M.P., Crowfoot Canada’s Pro-Trade Plan

Our Conservative government is focused on what matters to Canadians – jobs, growth and long-term prosperity. We are working hard to open new markets for Canada’s world-class manufacturers because this sector is critical to ensuring we continue to create new jobs and new sources of prosperity for workers and families across Canada. Manufacturers are major contributors to the Canadian economy employing approximately 1.8 million Canadians in a widerange of industries across Canada including aerospace, automotive, food processing and shipbuilding. In our area of rural Alberta, many of our agricultural products are destined for Canada’s manufacturing sector before they reach retail markets. Since 2006, we have assisted Canada’s manufacturers by lowering taxes, making Canada the first tariff-free zone for manufacturers in the G-20, reducing unnecessary red tape and improving conditions for business investment. Canada's pro-trade plan set Continued from page 35

We are continuing to pursue trade talks with some of the largest, most dynamic and fastest-growing economies in the world, including India, Japan, the European Union and the countries that make up the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Strengthening traditional markets and opening new ones have helped our agriculture sales as well. The Hon. Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade, says, “Our government will continue to support Canadian manufacturers through initiatives that will unleash their potential to innovate and compete in the global economy, which will benefit hard-working Canadian families for years to come.” The title of Economic Action Plan 2013 is “Jobs, Growth and Long-term Prosperity.” Working to strengthen Canada’s manufacturing sector for now and into the future is a good example of what we mean when we talk about securing long-term prosperity. Our government has been doing this work in many sectors of Canada’s economy. We see this work up-close in the agricultural sector of our riding. Trade opportunities and state-of-the-art capabilities are two keys to providing communities with the tools they need to be prosperous. UNIDIRECTIONAL FLUSHING PROGRAM

Why the City of Camrose is implementing the Unidirectional Flushing (UDF) Program: 1. To maintain and improve the City’s water quality. 2. To improve water flow and pressure in the water distribution system. 3. To reduce bacterial growth, restore disinfectant residual, and improve water color. 4. Unidirectional Flushing uses 40% less water than traditional flushing programs due to increased water velocity. 5. In addition to scouring the water pipes, the UDF Program also gives the City the opportunity to check, exercise, and maintain all water valves and hydrants. Habitat presents keys to two more families By Dan Jensen

Habitat for Humanity Camrose has given the gift of home ownership two more partner families. Dallas Johnston and her daughter, Farren, and Raymond Korbyl, Shaunna Van Someren and children Kody, Alexis and Levi were handed the keys to their new duplex-style homes at 5323 and 5325 - 46 Street during a Habitat for Humanity dedication ceremony July 23. "This is life-changing," said Johnston. "I could have rented for the rest of my life and my daughter would have rented for the rest of her life. What we now get to do is change where our families get to go. In the future she (Farren) will get to have so many more opportunities for herself." Van Someren said the ownership makes sure that she, Korbyl and her children have something for the long term. "Everyone gets their own bedroom and a big yard, and it is pretty special for everyone. It kind of lets you see what you are working so hard for. You may not make a million dollars a year but at lest you have something at the end. It is very appreciated." Thank yous

Habitat for Humanity board president Mark Schneider expressed his thanks to everyone who contributed towards the home builds. "It is because of you and your generosity and love for the community that we can do these things," said Schneider. "We are not building homes we are building community." Habitat for Humanity executive director Cody McCarroll expressed the wish that the homes become a place where families can focus on thriving instead of just surviving. "That is what Habitat's mission is all about, offering a hand up not a hand out, and helping families break free from that cycle of poverty." McCarroll praised City council and the City depart-

ity Camrose selects partner families based on the need for adequate shelter, the ability to pay a mortgage and a willingness to partner. "They have to donate 500 hours of sweat equity," said Habitat for Humanity family selection committee representative Leona Calhoun. "They can work on the build, they can work at the ReStore, they can work at non-profits like churches, speak at public events, attend home improvement classes and attend workshops that Habitat puts on as well." Habitat for Humanity homes are sold to partner famillies at 100 per cent of fair market value. "They must remain Habitat for Humanity homes for 20 years," said Calhoun. "If the circumstances for a family change and they get a better job or they want to move up and get a bigger home or whatever, Habitat for Humanity has the first right of refusal to buy that back." One hundred per cent of the mortgage payments made by Habitat partner families go towards the principal.

ments of engineering and planning for making it possible for Habitat to build new homes every year. "They do their best to help us along every year and streamline these projects. We couldn't do it without you and also the financial assistance that we continue to receive from the affordable housing municipal block funding program." Mayor Marshall Chalmers said the need for affordable housing in Camrose is an issue that consistently needs to be addressed. "According to the 2006 census, one family on every block is living in poverty. The

Pastor Olaf Clausen said the best reflection of God's love and care for his creatures is expressed in the family and the home. "The home was to be the nucleus and the foundation of peace and stability in our personal lives, and in our society at large – a place to experience and to give love. When the home is healthy the community is healthy, and when the community is healthy by extension the world is healthy. In fact, the stability of the home is so important to the peace of the family and the community that God demanded in his word that no generation was to be left without land and a home of their own." Pastor Clausen said when we restore hope and stability through the vehicle of home ownership, ultimately we are strengthening our communities in God's way, through God's love.

Communities prepare to celebrate Alberta Culture Days Sixty-six community organizations across the province will receive financial support from the Alberta government and serve as 2013’s official Alberta Culture Days celebration sites September 27 to 29. For three wild and creative days, communities, businesses, nonprofit/voluntary organizations, governments and individuals will come together to create activities and events that celebrate Alberta’s arts, heritage, community spirit and cultural diversity. With $375,000 in Government of Alberta assistance, these celebration sites will build com-

munity partnerships and increase access to cultural experiences in communities for Alberta families. “We discover, celebrate, and participate in culture 365 days a year – all this enthusiasm explodes during Alberta Culture Days,” said Heather Klimchuk, Minister of Culture. “Our celebration sites play a lead role in making the experience a success. Their ideas, excitement and activities are contagious.” Organizations receiving support partner with others in their community and present free, family-friendly activities throughout the Alberta Culture Days week-

end, from festivals and art shows to backstage tours and culinary samplings. Funding is provided to help plan and coordinate events at two levels: up to $5,000 for 61 host celebration sites, which present two days of programming; and, up to $20,000 for five feature celebration sites, which offer three programming days and stage a main event. “We are delighted to be part of Alberta Culture Days,” said Corrine Lyall, President of Doors Open Calgary, 2013’s Feature Celebration Site for Calgary. “Many Calgary locations were directly affected by recent

flooding, yet Albertans’ generosity, optimism and ability to collaborate for practical results has shone through this summer.” Albertans are encouraged to share in the experience of Alberta Culture Days by joining in, volunteering for, or planning an event that showcases their community’s unique talents, pride and passions. AlbertaCultureDays.ca features a number of event planning resources and customizable promotional tools for those communities that did not receive a grant this year or are still developing their plans. In addition, the

Alberta Culture Calendar is a free and easy way to find or promote cultural events, activities and opportunities in your community during Culture Days and throughout the year. Culture Days is a national, volunteer-driven, grassroots movement led by partners in the culture sector in collaboration with public and private organizations. In 2012, Alberta communities hosted more than 1,200 events. A full listing of the 66 groups and communities receiving a 2013 Celebration Site Grant can be found at AlbertaCultureDays.ca.

City of Camrose Requires All Homes Be Built like Shoes! All children like nursery rhymes, so to appeal to young families with children the City of Camrose is amending its Land Use Bylaw to require all new homes to be built like shoes!

What Is A Land Use Bylaw? A Land Use Bylaw is a document that outlines the location and standards for all forms of development within the City of Camrose. This document will provide the location for all future commercial, industrial and residential development while establishing the standards that govern how it must look and where features such as parking, landscaping and signage must be located.

Why Should I Get Involved? In building on the previously prepared Community Sustainability Plan, Municipal Development Plan and Downtown Action Plan, the City is reviewing the Land Use Bylaw to help achieve the overall vision for the community. This document will not only impact what is permitted on your individual property but could change what is or is not permitted on nearby properties. Overall this document will help shape the appearance and manage potential growth of Camrose in the years to come.

How Do I Get Involved? 1) Public Drop-In Centre - August 14, 2013 10:00 am - 8:00 pm - Location: Bill Fowler Centre, 5402-48 Avenue, Camrose, Alberta

www.marvelbuilding.com

2) Booth at Annual Battle River Watershed Festival - August 24, 2013 10:00 am - 3:00 pm - Location: Stoney Creek Centre, 5320-40 Avenue, Camrose, Alberta

Okay....not really, but we would really like your input.

3) Facebook (www.facebook.com/CityOfCamrose)

While this does not make that much sense, a Land Use Bylaw is a very powerful document that could technically require such a thing.

4) Contact a Project Team Member (Sara McCartney - GENIVAR Inc.)

- Visit the Facebook page and provide input in the Discussion Board related to the project - Phone: (780) 410-6772 or email: sara.mccartney@genivar.com.
