but have a quest for knowledge regarding current quilting techniques will be in for a real treat this weekend. The mentor of many who enjoy this relaxing pastime, Judy Niemeyer, is coming to Camrose. She will be conducting workshops and conveying new information at west-end hotels from July 18 to 22. Two of her students, the husband and wife team of Ardelle and Roger Kerr, owners of Quilting from the Heart, have built a thriving business, thanks in large part to Judy’s passion of the industry.

Ardelle is a Canadian award winning longarm quilter. Roger, a former dairy farmer, is now firmly transfixed on this hobby and has created over 30 incredible pieces from Judy’s patterns. Each creation represents up to 80 hours of devoted time. Roger is now the only male Certified Judy Niemeyer instructor in the world! A quilt show will be part of the weekend’s roster. All proceeds from this weekend’s sessions, and the sale of homemade cupcakes and refreshments will be split 50-50 and donated for future good work of The Open Door and The Camrose Women’s Shelter.

Augustana alumna Dorothy (nee Hare) Ludwig will be going for gold at the upcoming Olympic Games in London.

The 2000 BA graduate will be competing in the women's air pistol event at the Royal Artillery Barracks July 29.

She'll fire 40 shots from 10 metres over a period of one hour and 15 minutes.

"The shooting goes for a number of days because of the different disciplines involved but my event is just one day," said Ludwig.

Ludwig clinched her spot on the Canadian team during a shoot-off against her sister, Lynda Kiejko, and Lea Wachowich in the final qualification event last March.

"It was definitely bittersweet," said Ludwig. "I want my sister to do well and I want her to succeed, but at the same time I have my own goals and dreams set into place and would like them to come to fruition. It is difficult knowing that only one of us will be able to see our dreams fulfilled at a time but we both did our best. It just ended up that I was ahead."

Kiejko will be Ludwig's personal coach.

"I have anther coach," said Ludwig, "but I am only allowed to take one support person with me."

Ludwig, who was born in Renfrew, Ontario, and now resides at Langley, B.C., is a fivetime national champion who has shot competitively for the last 20 years. She won team bronze at the Commonwealth Games and at the Championship of the Americas in 2010, and a team gold and individual silver at the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

Her father, Bill Hare, went to the Olympic Games as an athlete in shooting in 1964, 1968 and 1972.

"It is a really amazing opportunity to be able to say that not only did my father go to the Olympics but I went to the Olympics as well, and in the same sport," said Ludwig. "It is definitely a dream come true and an amazing opportunity."

Ludwig will be walking into the Olympic stadium with other members of team Canada, and staying at the athletes' residential compound.

"It's going to be a great opportunity to be together with other Canadians, to cheer them on and hear their stories," she said. "To know that you are part of something much bigger than yourself is really exciting."

Ludwig trains at the Langley Rod and Gun Club for an hour and a half three times a week.

"I definitely make sure to include physical workouts in my routines," she told The Vancouver Sun. "I go to the gym where I do weightlifting and cardio and then I target various muscle groups that may or may not be specific to shooting. We also do mental rehearsals, coping strategies, relaxation strategies and good things like that."

Children's choir moved by patriotic experience

The Camrose Children's Choir performed during several music concerts during the Canada Day weekend in the nation's capital.

The local choir, directed by Joy-Anne Murphy and assisted

by Hannah Falk and accompanist Vicki Metcalfe, led a group of 20 students to Ottawa for a series of concerts with Unisong.

It is made up of youth and children's choirs from across Canada. The music choir festival was started 16 years ago to help bring together young Canadian talent.

"This was back when Quebec was talking about separation and the organizers wanted something to bring the country together in choral music," said Joy-Anne.

"They came up with the idea of bringing choirs from across the country to the capital."

Choirs from every province are asked to participate, then three from Alberta were selected to go to Ottawa to join many others from B.C. to Nova Scotia.

"It was a great experience and I hope our choir will be asked sometime in the future. By that time most of the members we have will likely have graduated and different people will have the opportunity to go," said Joy-Anne.

"I had a phone call a few years ago to go, but our group was small and just starting. When they phoned last year, I said I will ask my parents. After we said yes, they wanted to hear us sing, so we sent a CD recording."

When the choir arrived in Ottawa on June 27, they did a bit of sightseeing. Once Unisong began on June 28, members didn't have a lot of time to rest. "We spent the evening in rehearsal.

The next day we had a rehearsal in both the morning and afternoon and then sang in a concert with about half of the choirs in the evening. On Saturday, we had rehearsals in the morning, afternoon and evening in order to be ready for Sunday," explained Joy-Anne. "We performed three concerts on Sunday, one of which was just us in the morning. In the afternoon and evening, we had an orchestra with us. We also went to other venues to sing."

National Arts Centre on Canada Day in the morning. They also performed on their own in the Parliament rotunda. "Being a first year member, I wasn't used to the long practices. The practices were two and a half hours long and up to three times a day," said Krysta Hurley.

Choir member Davis Dewalt had the opportunity to perform a solo in front of the nation. "I was a bit nervous, but it was fun.

Just to be in Ottawa on Canada Day and watch the fireworks was exciting. We had an awesome director too."

Krysta enjoyed the opportunity to meet people from across Canada. "It was good to see other choirs and work with them. The director was amazing and we learned a lot," she said.

During the massive choir concert, members of the Camrose group were spread out throughout the 400 people. "It forced us to meet new people, which was a good thing," said Taytem Syrnyk.

"It was hard because you are so used to singing around people that you know. With that many

singers, I felt I could sing louder.

We were mixed in with mature voices and it was good."

It was an exciting year in choir for Krysta. "Going to Ottawa and to experience this was amazing. I've never been to Ottawa, so visiting everything was fun for me. I didn't think it was such a big deal. It was interesting to see how they celebrated and there were a lot of things to see."

Taytem participated in national skip rope competitions before, so she knew the event was going to be special. "This time was a whole different experience. With skipping it was with a smaller group and we focused on our competition. This was on Canada Day and a lot of people were watching. We were there before Canada Day and everything was already roped off for the celebration. It was such a huge event."

A day after the concerts, Talia and Davis met some people working in a coffee shop who had heard them sing. They mentioned that a local radio talk show host

had been talking about what the definition of Canada was. "He went to one of the Unisong concerts and saw how choir members from across Canada came together through music and then was plugging it the next day on the radio," said Joy-Anne. "It was fun to hear them talk about how the choirs helped define Canada."

The choir usually wraps up at the end of April, but this year the singers practiced throughout May and June to prepare for the concerts. "It was amazing to sing with an orchestra because it filled out the sound," added Talia Dewalt. "I was near the front, so I could hear the choir behind me and the orchestra and it sounded great."

The concerts were at no charge and the evening shows had about 2,000 people attend.

"The hardest part was learning to sing all of the songs in both English and French," said Taytem.

"I don't go to a French Immersion school like Talia, Davis, and Krysta, so it was harder for me to pick up the French version. It was a good learning experience

though and it pushed me to learn.

It was good to see the different cultures."

Talia said some people had to switch parts when they arrived. "That was hard to learn, because the men around us had different parts, so you had to sing when it was your turn," said Talia. "I have always loved singing, but being part of the large choir was amazing. They had street performers and it is so amazing to see that they are all so talented," Talia said.

"In Camrose, not everybody is into the arts. But in Ottawa, it seemed like everyone embraced the arts and culture," said Davis.

The Camrose Children's Choir went onto a bridge to watch the fireworks and soon broke out into song with O Canada. "Everyone stopped to look at us and people sang along with us," said Talia.

The choir and local families that travelled with the group will look at Canada Day a little differently next year because of their wonderful experience.

When she's not at the range, Ludwig works as an administrative assistant for Power to Change, a non-profit group formerly called Campus Crusade for Christ.

"We're involved in a lot of different ministries," said Ludwig.

"We deal with athletes and students on campuses and provide aid to different countries with water wells and food distribution.

It is exciting and a privilege to be able to assist those who need help."

Ludwig said she chose Augustana because of its drama program.

"I was there for three years and it was a great experience.

Augustana is a great university."

Canadian Olympic Committee president Marcel Aubut said all the members of the Canadian Olympic Team have equally compelling stories to share.

"Their skill and dedication are a welcome addition to the outstanding Canadians nominated to the Canadian Olympic team."

Canada has tasted success in shooting at previous Olympics, taking home nine medals between 1904 and 1984. The last medal in shooting that Canada won came courtesy of Linda Thom, who took home gold at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984.

Augustana Dean Dr. Allen Berger elected president of COPLAC

On June 23, the University of Alberta’s Dr. Allen Berger, Dean of Augustana Faculty, was elected president of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC).

The organization of 26 institutions – of which Augustana Campus is the sole Canadian member – promotes the value of a high-quality, arts and sciences education in residential campus settings.

“It’s an honour to be elected to serve as COPLAC’s president,” says Dean Berger. “I have

been involved with the organization since 2000 and have had ample opportunity to observe COPLAC’s important work.

These institutions represent an important sector in post-secondary education, and I believe they provide extraordinary value.”

A liberal arts education typically is defined by a commitment to a broad-based, general education in addition to study in a major. There is an emphasis on preparing students for meaningful careers, but also on educating the whole person, e.g., as a future citizen and leader. More recently, it has included community place-

ments – which challenge students to apply theories from the classroom to real-life challenges – and support for formalized undergraduate research. COPLAC institution students benefit from close relationships with faculty and staff and have extensive opportunities to practice their learning in co-curricular settings, both on and off campus. In many larger university settings, close faculty mentorship and research opportunities are available only to graduate students.

“I plan to help COPLAC advance two important priorities,” says Dean Berger. “The

first is cross-institutional collaboration on faculty-guided research and community-service learning opportunities for students. The second is effectively communicating the message that a liberal arts and sciences education is a perfect match for the twenty-first century skills that businesses and industries are seeking.” COPLAC seeks to shape the perceptions of both legislators and the general public.

Recently COPLAC has sponsored faculty and student exchanges, staff professional development opportunities, summer institutes and shared studyabroad programs to increase the

value of the education for each student. COPLAC also supports regional undergraduate research conferences and publishes outstanding undergraduate scholarship.

“COPLAC provides Augustana with an important network of colleagues across North America who are working at similar institutions that face similar challenges,” says Berger. “They are a valuable reference group for us, providing many good ideas and helping to ensure that an Augustana education is on a par with the best small-university experience anywhere.”

An Update to the Community In 1922, The Bethany Group began as a response to a need in Bawlf to find a home for the elderly. After relocating to Camrose in 1949, The Bethany Group was pleased to return to its roots in Bawlf in 2012 when it assumed the management of Sanden Court.

Over the past 90 years, The Bethany Group has seen many changes, expanding its scope of services to over 20 communities in central Alberta. From continuing care, supportive living and independent living for seniors to a variety of housing programs including affordable family housing, the organization remains committed to giving its residents and clients an enhanced quality of life while maintaining its faith-based roots.

In the past year, The Bethany Group created new relationships with the Lacombe Foundation, the Flagstaff Regional Housing Group, and Rimoka Housing Foundation. In addition to Wetaskiwin and Camrose, the organization now operates as the management body maintaining a strategic partnership with the existing local community Boards.

The advantage of these new initiatives is that The Bethany Group now has the potential to develop capacity to respond to new directions of government and community needs. By pooling resources, The Bethany Group has shown it can represent a large area of central Alberta on a regional level.

Recent surveys conducted by The Bethany Group have also shown the organization has achieved a very high satisfaction level among residents, with many of the results well over 90%. The Bethany Group aspires to create a positive, healthy work environment for staff.

Scott mixes country with rock

Alberta country singer Marlee Scott's new single "Train Wreck" is staying on track on the music charts.

The Edmonton area singer released her new CD Beautiful Maybe a few weeks ago and it has already received rave reviews.

Marlee will be performing on the main stage of the Big Valley Jamboree on Friday, August 3.

Marlee is pumped after the release of her third CD, but it is her debut album on the international market. It was released on June 19, with Big Ride Entertainment. Nearly a year in the making, Beautiful Maybe is a polished and diverse collection of songs.

Included among the 12 tracks are Marlee’s uplifting single and title track, "Beautiful Maybe," the thought-provoking "Jane Doe," the understated "I’m Not Your Baby Anymore," the groove-inspired "Planet Of Your Own" and her current single, the humorous bad relationship anthem "Train Wreck." Marlee is taking her new album on the road this summer with a number of dates, including Camrose.

"I want to have high energy shows and have people say they don't want it to be over. I like to run all over the stage and be gassed at the end of it. I want to be able to say I don't have to workout today because I've just done a show," said Marlee. "I wanted that to carry over to the CD as well."

Nashville producer David Kalmusky wanted Marlee to have an impact album to lift her career to a new level.

Marlee co-wrote two songs on the album: "Kiss of Coming Home" and "I Love Hating You." Her current single "Train Wreck" (written by Marcus Hummon, Jedd Hughes and Sarah Buxton) features a guest vocal from country legend Vince Gill and is gaining momentum not only on country radio, but also in the dance clubs.

While Marlee is excited to hear her songs on the radio, she has her own favourite song to play. "My favourite song to play is 'Rhinestone In The Rough' and it is about me being in love with this guy and he is not necessaryily the best for me. He is down and out, but I can't seem to get enough of him," said Marlee. "I believe in him and think he is something special. The song is so much fun and has a rock vibe to it. The whole band seems to come alive when we play it."

Marlee appreciates her fan support for the current hit. "If I have to pick another favourite it would be 'Train Wreck,'" said Marlee. "I didn't write it, but I instantly fell in love with it when it was pitched to me. It also has that rock verse sound that almost goes into a bluegrass chorus. We have Vince (Gill, a former BVJ performer) on the track and that is cool. I wish we could take him with us everywhere we perform.

Marlee’s first album, Souvenir, introduced the young singer to the country music masses, but more importantly, it generated sufficient buzz to showcase her songs live at various festivals and fairs around the country. Marlee’s critically-acclaimed sophomore effort included the international hit “Here To Heaven.” The track went Top 20 in Australia and Canada and shot to the top of the charts in Europe.

Although her songs are decidedly different in subject matter, each one reflects a unique side of Marlee’s personality that could only be expressed through her music.

Her mom Carole started her in music by offering her flute lessons. Needless to say, that didn't last long. She spent her childhood and early teenage years learning guitar and taking vocal lessons, which led to her sharing the stage with popular entertainers Emerson Drive, Adam Gregory and Blake Shelton.

Low hazard fireworks permits are not issued in Camrose County

Various fire chiefs throughout the Camrose County have different views regarding prohibiting low hazard fireworks within the county.

Some chiefs might issue permits if the conditions are not dry, while some villages may have a total ban on fireworks. "We don't have any control on the fire chiefs' decisions. Some may allow it and others not," said councillor Doug Lyseng.

"If we hired a county fire chief, then the chief would have authority over all of the other fire chiefs within the county.

Right now, the local fire chiefs can make their own decisions on fire permits and it may not be the same across the county," said county administrator Steve Gerlitz.

The fire chiefs have different opinions of the hazards of fireworks. "It is pretty much split

down the middle with all of our fire chiefs," said Mike Kuzio, protective services manager. "We were told that only fire chiefs can issue fireworks permits, so each area or zone has different views."

The issue will be brought up at a future fire chiefs' meeting in the county. "I would like to bring all the chiefs together to discuss the issue. I don't like the fact a fire chief may make a blanket

decision to say no all of the time," said councillor Trevor Miller. "I would like the decision based on conditions."

Councillor Rob Bjorge pointed out that the fire chief may not have a choice if he has to comply with a village decision.

Council directed administration to review a bylaw regarding low hazard fireworks because the province requested changes.

After review, administration pro-

vided an amended section to permit fireworks.

The fire chiefs agreed that they wanted the ban of fireworks to continue. "Based on legal advice, we were asked to allow fireworks with permits by the province," said Reeve Don Gregorwich.

"I think we could allow fireworks, based on legal opinion," said councillor Doug at a prior meeting.

Kiwanis Club wants you to become penniless

The Camrose Kiwanis Club has a unique way for you to get rid of your unwanted one-cent pieces and help a world-wide cause at the same time.

The club has placed several jars around town to collect pennies for a vaccine that protects mothers against maternal neonatal tetanus (MNT), a disease which, in developing countries, kills one baby every nine minutes.

"The cost of supplying the vaccine is just 60 cents a dose, explains Kiwanis secretary treasurer, Western Canada District, Dirk Bannister.

The collection effort by the Camrose Kiwanis Club is part of a world-wide campaign by Kiwanis International to totally eliminate MNT. "The support of our strong global network of Kiwanis family members at the club, division and international levels is essential to conduct a successful campaign," states a Kiwanis International brochure.

"We will showcase The Eliminate Project at Kiwanis International conventions."

A woman who receives three doses of tetanus vaccine is protected against tetanus for most of her childbearing years.

"When an immunized mother gives birth, she passes her immunity along to her child," states Kiwanis International. "The baby will require booster shots to remain protected."

A portion of the money raised by the Kiwanis family will be devoted to ongoing education and sustainability efforts.

Kiwanis is partnering with UNICEF, which is already close to eliminating MNT in countries such as Cambodia. It is hoped the funds raised by the Kiwanis family will fill the funding gap and ensure that MNT will no longer be a threat in the 38 countries it currently exists. The campaign plan will extend over four years so that every Kiwanis Club can mobilize its support.

"Kiwanis estimates that this program will save and protect over 61 million moms and babies at its conclusion," said Bannister.

By Mary Ann Pastuck Camrose United Church is looking forward to hosting Vacation Bible School (VBS) this summer and our theme is “Suiting up for God.�

As part of the Coronation Presbytery travelling VBS, Sara Griffith, coordinator, along with a group of volunteers will help us get dressed up to begin to know God, or perhaps to strengthen our relationship with God. During the week of July 30 to August 3, from 9 a.m. to noon, we will make and put on our Tool Belt of Truth, our Vest of Right Living, our Shoes of the Gospel of Peace, our Coat of Faith, a Helmet of Liberation and carry a Walking Stick for the Spirit, all to help us get to know God and to grow our faith.

Of course, there is a story to go with each of these and it would not be complete without games like Leaps and Bounds, Water Toss or Rock Carry, Shoe Soup, Faith Ball or Taking a Swing at Temptations.

"We want to make available compassionate care so people can die in peace, comfort and dignity with support for them and for those who care about them. Our focus is enhancing end-of-life care for all who are facing this difficult time."

Person noted that the Hospice Society has learned a great deal from and been inspired by other hospices in Red Deer and Okotoks, which provide homelike atmospheres, a central kitchen, chapel, sunroom and children's game room.

"The clients' bedrooms are spacious, with fold-out beds for family, and garden doors that open into a green space. While some staff members tend to the medical needs of patients, others are available to provide grief counselling and bereavement support for family and friends."

The cost of receiving care in a hospice is estimated to be about $300 per day, compared to $800 in a lodge and $1,800 in a hospital.

Hospice Society of Camrose and District co-chair Treva Olson said one of the problems of being in a hospital is the continuity of care and the possibility that the person who is dying may have to be moved somewhere else if a bed is required for acute care.

"Continuity of care is important. While the hospitals provide good care they can't provide the continuity that is available from a hospice facility."

Hospice Society co-chair Bev Drever said the first step in building a hospice facility is to build a volun-

teer base and get a sense of what the community really needs.

"There are not a lot of hospice facilities and we aren't sure at this time what is right for the community."

The Hospice Society of Camrose and District is currently working on trying to find space for a resource centre from which it would be able to share information on how to care for the dying through books, videos and guest speakers. Plans for this fall include offering a series of training courses with existing health care providers on how to care for the dying. Among the topics to be covered are how to cultivate inner peace, spiritual care and self care, grief and loss, and physician and medical care: completing the holistic vision.

"There is a big need to train family members and volunteers who can provide care or just be with the person who is dying," said Hospice Society member Rajan Rathnavalu. "The nurses don't have time to sit with them but the volunteers can."

The Hospice Society of Camrose and District was recently awarded society status and is now awaiting response to its application for charitable status.

Hospice palliative care is the active care of a person nearing the end of his or her life. As much as possible the care relieves suffering and improves the quality of both living and dying.

"We envision the patient, along with family and friends, as being the main director of his or her own care," said Person.

Vacation break provides learning opportunities It’s summer vacation for school-aged children and all thoughts of classes to attend or assignments to complete have been happily abandoned. However, that does not mean that learning needs to stop until school re-opens in September, nor does it necessarily mean that literacy and numeracy skills already learned will be forgotten during the summer break. On the contrary, such skills can be maintained, even enhanced, in an atmosphere of fun and excitement when families play together.

Vacation periods provide endless opportunities for literacy and numeracy learning to occur in an atmosphere of fun and relaxation. It matters not whether the family is home or away.

Board games that involve counting are an enjoyable way to help youngsters learn and maintain their numeracy skills – if the children are given the task of counting, adding, multiplying, dividing or whatever the game scoring requires.

Recently, it was my good fortune to participate in a game of Yahtzee involving three generations. A not-yet seven-year-old calculated the scores and was able to add 4 + 4 = 8 and 8 + 8 = 16 and other combinations of numbers according to the roll of the dice. It’s just one example of what children can learn by playing games (I interject that it works equally well for maintaining the math skills of adults, too.) Cribbage is one of many other optional games that sharpens one’s numeracy acuity at any age while, at the same time, having fun. And another benefit that the not-yet seven-year-old observed: “You don’t have to win to have fun.” Amicable competitiveness is a desirable skill to cultivate, too, as it has a lot to do with learning to maintain harmonious personal relationships.

Another student I know initiated a math project while the family was sharing a pizza pre-cut into equal size pieces. He noted that some people had one piece, others had two or three each; he wondered what percentage of the whole pizza each had consumed.

So, he did the calculations that satisfied his curiosity. That augurs well for the prospect of him developing a life-long curiosity that questions ‘what is’ and pursues visions of ‘what might be better’ for the earth and its people.

There are also many enjoyable ways to maintain literacy skills throughout the school vacation period. Reading, of course, is one; I love it when my great-grands read to me from their newest books or, sometimes I may read to them. When they are away, some send mail to tell me about their holiday ventures and the sights and sites they have seen.

I find the information interesting and it is satisfying to know that they are continuing to hone their communication skills.

There are oodles of ways to engage students of any age in refreshing and enjoyable learning during vacation periods. For example, let them help with meal preparation which requires reading recipes, or build bird houses which requires reading how-to instructions. Try a new game which requires reading the rules, or check Google to read something about a vacation destination, read schedules of public swimming or other activities. Make your own list of things to do which can be endless!

Yes, it’s useful to play literacy and numeracy games on iPads and computers, but that, by itself, can be a lonely and isolating pursuit. When families work and play together they have more to talk about around the dinner table. They become best friends as well as more literate.

May your school vacation be a happy, enriching time!

Landowners harassed

This government continues to push through the 4,000 MW EATL and WATL DC lines, despite all opposition from sectors of Albertan society, and the pending Alberta Court Appeal.

Meanwhile, ATCO continues to pressure/harass landowners to sign early entry agreements, and ATCO’s agents keep trespassing on land designated as EATL’s preferred route.

IPCAA (using roughly 61 per cent of Alberta’s power), the Alberta Industrial Heartland Association, Concerned Neighbours in Partnership, Alberta Landowners Council, lawyers, plus hundreds of Albertans, have provided evidence that these unneeded DC lines are a massive overbuild.

Mayor Nenshi (Calgary Herald, May 11/12) called the twin power lines a terrible idea, stating they are not needed because of the city-owned $1 billion gasfired power plant in the Shepherd district. Moreover, AESO’s Long Term Plan shows transmission lines (US Pacific Northwest Intertie, $815 million) going into Montana. Since Alberta has committed to provide electricity to the US by 2020, this government must admit that they are basically export lines, and make ATCO and AltaLink (not Albertans) bear the total cost.

The same year (2009) that AESO put out this Long Term Plan, there were still over 11,500 MW of wind generation in the AESO interconnection queue

waiting to be tied into the grid.

Alberta’s current total net generation is about 9,000 MW, and average daily demand is about 8,000 MW. If Alberta has excess power to export, so be it. But, ATCO and AltaLink should foot the bill.

Apparently the Pincher Creek and Ft. Macleod areas are still waiting for small tie-ins to the grid. ATCO now applied (June 13/12) for a temporary connection to the Ghost Pine 114S Substation, for the 51 turbines near Trochu. Alberta’s largest Wind Energy Project (Halkirk with 83 turbines generating 150 MW, enough electricity to power 50,000 homes and reduce emissions equivalent to taking 60,000 cars off the road) completion date late 2012, and the 300 MW Blackspring Ridge 1 Project, Canada’s largest wind farm (completion date end of 2013) will also need AC tie-ins to the grid.

In this government’s push to build the lines as soon as possible because of the needed AC tie-ins throughout the province to utilize cogeneration, natural gas generation, wind (and/or solar) power are ignored. BC, on the other hand (where electricity costs onethird what it costs Albertans), is using homegrown wind energy as a cost-effective and clean choice to meet increased electricity demand. Common sense dictates that this government should concentrate on AC tie-ins that benefit all Albertans.

Why is the input from Albertans regarding this mega DCline overbuild ignored, and why does this government steadfastly refuse to correct their DC linerelated blunders? I attended and was impressed with the 2012 Canada Day celebration in Camrose.

I understand that several clubs, organizations, etc., donated funds towards the events of the day. Why then, did the youngsters have to pay to participate in the children's activities?

The fireworks display was free for the public. I know that other towns provided a free day for their people – young and old, for all activities. Recently, the Camrose Public Library hosted a free High Tea to the public.

Thumbs down to the people who have been taking wedges from the Centra Cam projects yard after hours. I assume they have been taking them for firewood. Centra Cam is a non-profit organization providing opportunities for independence to adults with developmental disabilities.

Although we do receive some government funding, we also need to generate additional revenue to keep our organization functioning. Part of our revenue is made through the sale of wedges to the pipe mills. We also sell firewood, however, due to the recent and regular disappearance of wedges from our yard, we will only be selling firewood from the main Centra Cam building near the airport.

The saying goes, "there's a special place in heaven for volunteers." I think there is also a special place (not in heaven) for people that steal from a charity.

Get your rosettes in time for Camrose Founders Days

Members of the Camrose downtown business community are being encouraged to trim their businesses for this year's Founders Days celebration.

The Camrose Founders Days committee and the Canadian Northern Railway Society will be selling traditional rosettes at City Hall from now until the start of the celebration Aug. 10.

The cost of $25 can be paid by cash or cheque made payable to the Canadian Northern Society.

"We want everyone to join in the spirit of the festival," said Camrose Founders Days committee chair Barb McDonald.

Rosettes have a rich history, and have become a staple of pride, showmanship and celebration. Historians say that the rosette award ribbon dates back as far at the eighth or ninth century. In 1802, Napoleon Bonaparte instituted the use of rosette award ribbons as a part of the Legion of Honor award. These early rosettes, much larger than the rosettes we see today, were attached to the ribbon that displayed the Legion medal and was presented to deserving individuals in recognition of outstanding military or civic service.

one to dress in early 1900 period clothing to add to the flare of the festival.

"We are celebrating our precious multicultural, multifaceted heritage along with the colorful individuals who shaped our city into a community of which to be very proud," said McDonald.

Yvonne had an amazing sense of humor, always joking around and teasing everyone.

On the road ‌ Dave Fitchie helps keep museum going

There aren't many people who are more dedicated to the successful operation of Camrose and District Centennial Museum than Dave Fitchie.

"Dave is a valuable volunteer and member of the Camrose and District Museum Society," said museum director of operations and curator Corinna Nilson.

"He is here most days and puts in more work than most of us. He is like a walking encyclopedia. You can ask him where any artifact is and he usually remembers."

Fitchie began his relationship with Camrose and District Centennial Museum in 1982 when, as an employee of Stelco, he was given the job of helping to restore the old CASE steam engine.

"I drew up the blueprints for the parts that needed to be built, like the water tanks and the bunkers," he said, "and did the ultrasonic test on the boiler to make sure it met the regulations of the Boilers branch."

The work proved to be so interesting that Fitchie continued to help with annual boiler inspections on a yearly basis, and, in 1985, became a member of the Camrose and District Centennial Museum Society board.

His first major project involved helping with the construction of the replica of the Camrose Mail (Camrose Canadian) building.

"The printer at the Camrose Canadian at the time, Cliff Giles, felt that the museum had quite a few items from the county but not many from the city, and suggested that The Canadian was a big part of the community's history," said Fitchie. "A guy by the name of Ernest Johnson did most of the work but I and a few others also contributed a lot of time."

Fitchie also assisted with the addition of a garage to the back of the museum workshop, and the enclosure of the blacksmith shop (which had previously housed the steam engine).

"Before, the blacksmith shop was nothing but a roof held up by a few posts," said Fitchie. "We

got wood for the sides from a few granaries in the area."

The shop was expanded not long afterwards when the museum received the donation of sheet metal tools.

"All the work that was done on the buildings was a collaborative effort by a bunch of volunteers who cared about preserving the history of Camrose and area," said Fitchie. "There are a lot of people to thank for what we have now."

Fitchie and Lloyd Johnson built a replica of Ole Bakken's log home on the museum grounds just before the first Camrose Founders Days celebration.

"The museum was going to hire somebody to build it but the price that was quoted was more than expected, so Lloyd and I decided to do it ourselves," said Fitchie. "We got the trees from a farm just north of Camrose, brought them in, and built it in about ten days. We got quite a bit of help from other volunteers at the end with the sod roof."

In 2007 Fitchie and Johnson joined hands again to build the new tractor shed. This past winter he assisted with the interior reconstruction of the Oldtimers' Hut. "The Oldtimers' Hut was part of the army camp that was built by the Dominion government in 1939 and then sold after the war to the City of Camrose, which cut up the barracks and sold them as housing. The building that we restored was given to the Oldtimers' Association, which used it until the construction of the Mirror Lake Centre, then to the museum."

Along with helping with buildings, Fitchie has done a lot of work with the museum's many vehicles. He and Barry Fenby contributed many hours to the restoration of the 1930 International truck.

"The truck was in pretty good mechanical condition when it came to us but it was pretty well beaten to death," said Fitchie. "We put the sheet metal on, re-upholstered the interior and nickled all the bits and pieces that needed it."

Fitchie's main work lately has been to photograph the museum's artifacts for the museum records.

"We've photographed about 8,000 artifacts," he said, "but still have another 70,000 to 80,000 to do. It's not a project that we would have done before the start of digital photography."

Fitchie has held almost every position on the Camrose and District Centennial Museum Society board, including president, and, before the arrival of Nilson, served as the volunteer curator.

He estimates that his total volunteer time is about 20 hours per week all year round.

"Volunteering here has helped me fill my time in retirement," he said. "I don't want to sit on my rump all the time and I don't want to work for someone else. There is an old saying that retirement is a time where you leave the job that you had to do for the job that you want to do."

Fitchie doesn't claim to have a favourite exhibit or piece of equipment at the museum.

"It's whatever strikes me the most and what I am working on at the time. I enjoy the tractors quite a bit but I also enjoy the motor vehicles and the steam engines."

Fitchie feels it would be a shame to have to shut down the museum due to a lack of funding.

"There was talk about doing that this spring when we got word that the government had denied a grant application but I don't think it will happen anytime soon," he said. "It is important that we preserve the things from the past that brought us to where we are today and make up our culture. Look, for example, at the display of children's clothing in the main building, or the collection of plates. What you see are the valued possessions of many people who helped us grow.

When it comes down to basics, it is all about the people."

County residents asked to review dog bylaw

On July 10, Camrose County council gave first reading of a dog bylaw to start the process in examining if it is needed in the rural area.

"As it now stands, we are powerless to do anything outside of our hamlets," said Councillor Brian Austrom. "I'm in favour of having a dog bylaw for the entire county and it would be good to circulate it to the people that have to enforce it, so they have the opportunity to make comments on it."

Councillor Glen Nelson indicated he had two recent dog complaints.

"We need stricter rules on dangerous dogs, so I move first reading of the bylaw," said Glen. Protective services manager Mike Kuzio was directed to bring back to council, a proposed dog bylaw that covers the entire county. Mike pointed out that one section is only applicable if a dog is not on its owner's property. "Consider public places like county roads, the Nature Centre, and other parks in hamlets or campgrounds when reading this section," he said. "Another consideration is that the County Peace Officers usually act only on written complaints. Often these written complaints trigger a verbal warning before a violation ticket is issued. Every situation varies and discretion is required by the peace officer in each case to determine whether the complaint is substantiated and severe enough to warrant a penalty."

This bylaw is intended to give the County Peace Officers the tools they need to deal with dog complaints. "Camrose County continues to develop and along with development comes an increase in domestic pets.

It is important for owners to maintain proper control over their dogs so that other residents can enjoy their private property and our public spaces," added Mike. "The bylaw would allow County Peace Officers and Alberta Animal Services to respond and investigate dog complaints county- wide. This will enable officers from both departments to better serve county residents.

"A dangerous dog is not specific to a breed of dog. Rather, it is based on their actions or the owner's action. It is up to the judge to determine if it is a dangerous dog," said Mike.

"We have a concern about who is going to enforce the bylaw," said councillor Trevor Miller. "The RCMP, County Peace Officers and Alberta Animal Services can all enforce the bylaw," he stated.

"I'm in favour of proceeding with the motion to receive some feedback on it," said councillor Vern Peterson. "However, I do want to know the cost of enforcing this bylaw."

Mike and county administrator Steve Gerlitz both indicated that the current agreement is in place with Alberta Animal Services until the end of the year. "We would have to consider adding hours to increase enforcement," said Steve. "It would cost us roughly $100 an hour. We would have to determine the number of hours and level of service we want to provide. It is something to consider at next year's budget meetings. Government blackouts information on power

Some parts of the province were left in the dark on July 9 when power outages occurred.

However, the entire province has been kept in darkness when the government failed to explain why the outages occurred when the generation levels were close to normal.

MLA Joe Anglin asked that Alberta energy minister Ken Hughes and the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) release the information on what caused six generators to shut down on, which resulted in province-wide power outages.

One of the generators that went out was a coal-fed unit at the Battle River facility in Forestburg.

Paul Wright, vice-president of finance for ATCO Power, reported that the 385-MW Battle River 5 coal-fired unit, which went off-line July 9, remained dark for about four days until mechanical issues are repaired.

The details of the number of individuals and locations affected by the blackouts will also not be released. The blackouts caused power outages in Edmonton and Calgary, impacting residences, businesses and road intersections, yet neither municipal officials nor police were notified in advance about the shutdowns.

Mr. Anglin pointed out that, up to this point, very limited information has been made available to the public about what mechanical issues caused the individual generators to shut off. He agreed with Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel calling the lack of notification “unacceptable,” and went on to say the government must implement a fully transparent process and AESO must release the findings in their investigation about the blackout, so Albertans can be assured that consumers are protected.

Mr. Anglin also criticized the government for lacking leadership in an electrical system that is not getting results for Alberta consum-

ers, arguing that the blackouts on Monday could have been avoided.

“Had the government put together any proactive strategy that would allow Alberta to utilize its abundance of natural gas for power generation, Albertans would not have had to experience the rolling blackouts,” Mr. Anglin said. “The system would be more efficient, more stable and would cost Albertans a fraction of the billions of dollars the government is proposing to spend on unnecessary new transmission lines.”

A demand-side management strategy was also proposed by Mr. Anglin to increase energy efficiency and conservation that would save Alberta consumers from higher power bills in the long-term. Many other jurisdictions throughout the world have successfully implemented demand-side management strategies benefitting both producers and consumers.

Alberta’s NDP opposition leader Brian Mason said that the Retail Market Review Committee that was announced in March was only meant to mask Conservative inaction on unstable power prices until after the election was over.

“Albertans told us over and over again in this past year that they were paying too much for their electricity, but we saw the companies who sell electricity making skyhigh profits,” said Mason. “This committee has never been about making real changes in electricity.

At best, this is window-dressing, and at worst it’s taxpayer-funded market research for power companies.”

The government’s refusal to address deregulation as the underlying problem of high electricity prices is obvious in the various pieces of the Retail Market Review Committee: several questions on an online public survey explore the possibility of doing away with the Regulated Rate Option, moving into a market where the price is determined exclusively by the power companies.

Protective services busy in the county

In June, Camrose County Protective Services answered 15 calls for services in traffic, bylaw, animal, general, litter, court and theft.

The campgrounds have been very busy this year with minimal issues arising. "The peace officer presence in the campgrounds has been consistent," said protective services manager Mike Kuzio.

"We issued 62 traffic tickets with a value of $10,118 once fine money is collected. Oil field activity is average with 40 overweight permits issued."

The DARE program came to an end for the 2011-12 school year with four Grade 6 classes graduating. Hay Lakes and Round Hill graduated in December, while New Norway and Bawlf graduated on June 26. "I feel this program has been extremely successful and the children's attitudes towards the program have been great. There were days the children did not want DARE to end and didn't want me to leave."

He spoke with some of the teachers and parents from all schools involved and there were no bad comments from anyone.

Protective Services visited numerous unsightly property complaints and are monitoring them. "They are willing to work with the county and understand they are in violation of the County Nuisance Bylaw. The county officers are granting them more time to rectify the nuisance property," said Mike.

Officers are preparing for the 20th anniversary of the Big Valley Jamboree. "The county held a table top exercise with the Camrose Police Service, Camrose Fire Department, Alberta Health Services and the staff from Panhandle Productions, in preparation for the Big Valley Jamboree, Aug. 2 to 5," added Mike. "The exercise went over very well and all parties involved are working together to better prepare themselves in the chance a disaster were to hit the Camrose County area."

Councillors asked that a meeting of the Camrose RCMP, protective services, sheriffs and Bashaw RCMP be arranged to talk about local issues.

Rocky Mountain Dealerships Inc. announced that it has completed the agreement to purchase 100 per cent of the issued and outstanding shares of Camrose Farm Equipment Ltd. All Aboard the Mirror Lake Express

Tom Chelmick no longer has any reservations about the Camrose Chamber of Commerce decision to purchase the Mirror Lake Express train.

"It's turned out to be a great investment," said Chelmick, who is chair of the Chamber of Commerce train committee. "It's a symbol of Camrose and something that brings so much joy to kids, adults and grandparents, not only here but across the province. It represents the City and County wherever it goes."

The Mirror Lake Express makes regular runs on the Mirror Lake trails Tuesday and Thursday evenings throughout the summer months. The total number of passengers so far this year is 2,500 – a number that Chelmick expects to grow to well above 5,000 by the time the season ends.

The Mirror Lake Express has already appeared in a number of parades throughout central Alberta, winning first prize in its category in Lougheed and Andrew, and second prize in Leduc. Next on the schedule is the Edmonton Klondike Days parade this Thursday, in which it will be carrying members of AboutTime Productions.

"Cathie Johnson and 11 of her people from About Time are going to be singing on the train," said Chelmick. "We have 110 power on the train so we are working on the microphones and PA system."

The busiest weekend was June 29, 30 and July 1.

"The Friday we were in Ponoka for the Stampede and parade. Saturday we were at Andrew's parade and celebrations, and Sunday we were here in Camrose for the Canada Day celebrations. We started at quarter to 12 and kept giving rides until 6."

The Camrose Chamber of Commerce experienced all kinds of problems during the train's first year of operation.

"It was built by Jeppa Danielson to run three or four times a year but that first year we ran it about 25 times," said Chelmick. "It seemed like we were always fixing a flat tire or making repairs of some kind."

Chelmick estimates that the Chamber has spent $20,000 on train repairs.

wheels and the tie rods, and put in a hydrostatic transmission," he said. "The transmissions that were in it before were belt driven and took a lot of time to replace."

The Chamber train has received a lot of support from throughout the community. The City of Camrose, which encouraged the Chamber to purchase the train in the first place, provides a place for storage (in the summer it is at the Rose City Curling Club), and, along with Camrose County, Panhandle Productions and other businesses, has purchased advertising space on the trailers that are used to transport the train to various events. Other supporters include McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC, which provides the use of a three-quarter truck for transportation, and

Camrose Machine & Welding Inc. "The people at Camrose Machine & Welding have bent over backwards to make sure the train is working properly," said Chelmick. "Whenever we have broken a bolt or nut or something they have replaced it at no charge."

The new hydrostatic transmission and a few extra wheels came from the John Deere dealership.

"They needed the engine from a tractor for something else," said Chelmick, "so they offered it to us for $500."

Chelmick estimates there are about 100 people who donate their time to the train during the course of the summer, from bank managers to the Visitor Information Centre staff, who ride ahead on bikes when the

train is on the Mirror Lake trail system to let people know it is coming.

"Our main engineer is Brian Lewis, who drives the train almost every Tuesday and Thursday evening," said Chelmick. "Jeppa drives the train every once in a while but he is 87 now and every year he does it less and less."

Chelmick has trained and certified eight people in the safe and proper operation of the Mirror Lake Express.

"We have our rules and are always concerned about safety," said Chelmick. "We always have a conductor, for instance, who is looking back at the passengers so that he can tell the engineer to stop the train if, heaven forbid, someone were to fall out.

The engineer knows that if he gets a tap on the shoulder he is

supposed to stop the train right away. We have had kids lose a shoe and we have stopped the train so they could go and pick it up."

Chemick receives a great deal of satisfaction from being associated with the Mirror Lake Express.

"I have just found passion with it, as have Brian and Allister MacMillan, and look at it as a way for me to give back to the community," he said.

Chelmick said the Mirror Lake Express has proven to be the envy of many other communities.

"There are other cities that have miniature trains but none quite like this. They have trains but they are on tracks and they can't provide representation by going across the province."

Augustana athletic director named to Team Canada staff

Greg Ryan, athletic director at the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus in Camrose will be making his fifth trip to the World Student Summer Games in 2013.

The volleyball coach, turned Augustana athletic director, will be the technical manager for Team Canada. His roles in the previous four trips were twice as head coach and twice as an assistant coach.

Canadian Interuniversity Sport, as the Canadian representative of the International University Sports Federation (FISU), announced the Team

Canada mission staffs for the 2013 Summer and Winter Universiades.

Greg will be going to the Games in Kazan, Russia. At the Games in Zagreb and Sheffield, he was an assistant coach. In Sicily, (1997) and Daegu, South Korea (2003) he was the head coach. Under his direction in Daegu the men's volleyball team finished seventh in the World.

At the Student Games in Kazan, Russia next summer Greg will serve on the mission staff working on the technical portfolio. “This will be a unique opportunity for me to experience the Games from the organ-

izational side,” said Greg. “I am looking forward to a great learning opportunity about event management.”

Theresa Hanson from the University of British Columbia will be Canada’s chef de mission at the 27th summer world university games in Kazan, Russia (July 6 to 17), while Gord Grace from the University of Windsor will lead the red and white delegation at the 26th winter games in Trentino, Italy (December 11 to 21).

Mary MacDonald, CIS manager of sport and international programs, will be assistant chef de mission at both events.

“We are thrilled with the mission staffs we have assembled for the 2013 Universiades,” said Mary. “Thanks to their support and expertise, we are confident that Canadian studentathletes will enjoy a memorable experience and will achieve great success in Kazan and Trentino.”

In 2011, Canada sent a delegation of 141 (102 athletes to the Winter Games in Erzurum, Turkey, and a contingent of 349 (246 athletes) to the summer competition in Shenzhen, China.

Canadian student-athletes captured five medals in Turkey (one gold, three silver, one

bronze) and reached the podium eight times in China (0-5-3).

The 2013 Summer Universiade will feature 13 compulsory sports and 14 optional sports.

Compulsory sports include athletics, basketball, fencing, football (soccer), artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, swimming, diving, water polo, tennis, volleyball, judo and table tennis. Optional sports include badminton, beach volleyball, belt wrestling, boxing, chess, canoe sprint, field hockey, rugby seven, sambo, sport shooting, synchronized swimming, rowing, weightlifting and wrestling.

CMHC releases new rental market report

It's getting more difficult to find an apartment according to a new rental market report.

Statistics released by Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation show that the private apartment vacancy rate in Camrose this past April was 4.8 per cent, down from 7.3 per cent last October.

The reported vacancy rate in April, 2011, was 6.4 per cent.

The vacancy rate for threebedroom apartments dropped to zero per cent from 3.8 per cent last fall and 4.5 per cent in April, 2011.

The vacancy rate for twobedroom apartments dropped to 5.2 per cent from 6.7 per cent last fall and 7.3 per cent in April, 2011.

The vacancy rate for onebedroom apartments was 4.5 per cent, down from 9.4 per cent last fall and 4.5 per cent in April, 2011.

Bachelor apartments continued to be the toughest to find, with a vacancy rate of zero per cent, the same as it was in October, 2011.

The total number of apartment units in Camrose in April was 672, down from 683 in April, 2011. Two-bedroom apartments totalled 481, one-bedroom units 136, three-bedroom units 49 and bachelor units seven.

The average rental rate for private apartments in Camrose increased in April to $770, up from $762 last October and $751 in April, 2011.

Rates for one-bedroom units rose to $607, up from $571 in April, 2011, while rates for twobedroom units rose to $662, from $646 in April, 2011.

The average rental rate for two-bedroom and three-bedroom

apartments was $820 and $864 respectively.

The average rental rate for two-bedroom apartments in April, 2011, was $799. The average rental rate for three-bedroom apartments in April, 2011, was $842.

The average rental rate across Alberta for all apartment types was $961, up from $941 in April, 2011.

Provincial picture

The average apartment vacancy rate for Alberta's urban centres was 3.0 per cent, down from 4.7 per cent in April, 2011.

Vacancy rates ranged from zero per cent in the Okotoks Census Agglomeration to 10.8 per cent in Wood Buffalo.

"The reduction in vacancies was largely attributed to robust job growth and rising migration, as the resulting household formation contributed to rental demand," said the report.

Wood Buffalo had the highest average rate among all urban centres in Alberta at $1,920 per month, while Medicine Hat had the lowest at $661 per month.

"With lower vacancy rates and higher demand for rental units, rental rates have experienced more upward pressure," said the report. "Same-sample rents for two-bedroom apartments increased 5.0 per cent year-over-year in Calgary. Samesample rents for two-bedroom units also rose in the Edmonton area, up 2.2 per cent year-overyear."

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation conducts Rental Market Surveys in April and October of every year to estimate the relative strengths of the rental market. The surveys target only privately initiated structures with at least three rental units, which have been on the market at least three months.

Campground getting to be better known across Alberta

Things are starting to get busier at the Camrose Exhibition Trail RV Park.

"The occupancy is starting to come up," said Park campground manager Judy Bergstrom. "The awareness that the park exists is actually starting to increase."

The average occupancy at the Park from April until now has been right around 45 per cent.

"We would like to increase that but we realize that we are serving a niche market," said Bergstrom. "We are not near a lake or a

golf course, we are in a town. The people who come here are people who are here for just a few days to take in something in the city or surrounding area or to attend a specific event."

The Park was completely full when the Night Classic soccer tournament was held in Camrose in early June and is expecting to be jam-packed again for Big Valley Jamboree at the start of August.

"We could have sold out many times over with the Night Classic," said Bergstrom.

"We already have people on a waiting list for next year."

The Park currently has a number of workers who are repairing and replacing area pipelines.

"We had them come in last year as well," said Bergstrom.

"They're providing a little bit of stability and backbone to our occupancy. As long as there is work to be done in the area we will have a market."

The Park has undertaken efforts to raise its profile by establishing a website (www.camroservpark.com) and a presence on

social media sites like Facebook, and has affiliated itself with the Good Sam RV Club. It also has a listing in the Alberta Campground Guide published by the Alberta Hotel and Lodging Association.

"We're getting our name out there in hopes of driving up our occupancy," said Bergstrom.

The Park has a plan to improve its aesthetics and landscaping over the next five to ten years as the funding becomes available.

"It's not going to happen overnight so we have had to identify priorities," said Bergstrom. "We

have started a little tree nursery and will be setting those little guys out once they become more mature."

Since 1985, Camrose Women’s Shelter Society has been offering services in support of women and their children requiring emergency shelter due to domestic violence, crisis situations or homelessness. We are currently recruiting to the following positions: Part-time Month to Month Contract Position Crisis Intervention Worker 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Monday to Friday Part-Time Month to Month Contract Position Crisis Intervention Worker Shift work 20 hours per week (Two 10 hour shifts per week cycle) We are looking for compassionate and understanding candidates who have professional values, and are knowledgeable and sensitive towards women and children impacted by family violence and/or homelessness.

Consideration will be given to candidates with a degree or diploma in Social Sciences or related disciplines, and/or related experience working in a shelter or crisis oriented field. Preferred applicants have experience in domestic violence, working with families, supporting women in crisis, or have experience with residential programs. Current First Aid, CPR, criminal record and child welfare check are required. Wages range from $19.89 to 23.78 per hour.
