Sani-dump station open The City of Camrose has completed development of a brand new sani-dump station in East Camrose, near the Camrose Regional Exhibition and Exhibition Trail RV Park.

The new, updated sani-dump facility now allows for two-way traffic and includes a queuing area for additional recreational vehicles. Deep utility installations (water and sewer) were completed in 2011 and surface improvements are now complete.

The facility has easy in and out access and is now open.

City Council approved funds to develop the new facility as part of the 2011 budget process, as the older sani-dump facilities at the Valleyview Campground no longer met code requirements and the City-owned Valleyview Campground was converted into a day-use facility. This project was initiated with funding from the City Sanitary Utility. There is currently no charge for use of the new sani-dump station.

The older public sani-dump station at the Valleyview Campground location is now permanently closed. Users are encouraged to visit the new sani-dump station, located at 4250A Exhibition Drive near the new Camrose Exhibition Trail RV Park. Organizations sign protocol for responding to threats

Senior representatives from the Battle River School Division, Camrose Police Service, RCMP, the Alberta Child and Family Services Authority, and Community Addiction and Mental Health gathered at the school division office June 27 to sign a protocol which outlines how their organizations will work together in assessing and responding to violent threats involving students.

"When we work together and cooperate together we can do a much better job of assessing risk so that we might prevent an incident from happening in the first place," said Battle River School Division director of student services Nancy McLeod.

The protocol allows the partners to bypass FOIP and confidentiality issues in the interests of everyone's greater good if they determine a threat exists. Through the act of sharing information they believe they can create a bigger picture of the overall situation.

"It is like putting together a puzzle," said McLeod. "When we put these pieces together we can actually create a picture and we can decide on a plan."

The protocol can be set in motion by any one of the signing members.

"Say, for example, that the people from Mental Health become concerned about a student with whom they are involved," said BRSD communications officer Diane Hutchinson.

"The protocol spells out how they can contact the other agencies

that might have information on a particular individual."

The protocol was born out of a threat assessment training program developed by Canadian Centre for Threat Assessment and Trauma Response director Kevin Cameron, who led the crisis team following the 1999 school shooting in Taber. Through workshops led by Cameron himself, trainees – which included approximately 90 teachers, prin-

cipals, counsellors and administrators from BRSD – were able to learn how to recognize high risk behaviours and what they should do in the event they encountered one. According to Cameron's Assessing Violence Potential: Protocol for Dealing with Highrisk Student Behaviours, levels of threat can be divided into four levels: immediate risk situation, threat making behaviours, worrisome behaviours and exception-

al, and high profile worrisome behaviour.

"The training done by Kevin talks a lot about how many people are imitators, and very often, after we see a crisis (the magnitude of which was seen in Taber) we will see another one," said McLeod.

RCMP Camrose detachment commander Beth Philipp said the RCMP is totally committed to moving forward with the protocol and seeing it through.

"We had one of our members attend the initial workshop and he found it to be very valuable."

Laurie Widmark, senior manager of intervention services, East Central Alberta Child and Family Services Authority, said the training that was provided was incredible.

"We all learned a few new things. It partnered us with education, the City police and RCMP." Camrose Chief of Police Darrell Kambeitz expressed appreciation to everyone who had a hand in developing the protocol.

"Protocols are good for police," he said. "We like to have things to follow. It will help our people when they are forced to make serious decisions."

The Camrose-specific protocol was developed through the cooperation of all partnering agencies.

"We spent a lot of time on it and I am grateful everyone has come on board," said Christie Badry, who supervises BRSD's family liaison workers and the CHAMP program. "I think it is going to help us work together better and understand how, when we partner together, we can better serve our schools and our students. When we all come together with our perspectives we are able to provide a full picture of what the students need for support."

Violent risk assessment protocols have been developed in several other communities across Canada.

"There is a similar one that has been in place in the Lloydminster area for a number of years," said Widmark.

Habitat for Humanity names new partner families

Diana Mahowich and Britney Hoppe are expecting to receive the keys to their new Habitat for Humanity Camrosebuilt homes in Duggan Park this fall.

The two Camrose women and their children were chosen as the newest Habitat partners following a lengthy application and interview process in which they were evaluated on the basis of several factors, including need, income, and the ability to pay a mortgage.

Hoppe is happy she we will be able to put money into a home that she will eventually own.

"I was extremely excited," (when she got the call letting her know she had been selected) she said.

"When I told the kids they were jumping up and down."

Mahowich's reaction to the news was one of a sense of relief, like a weight was being lifted from her shoulders.

"I asked the person (who phoned her) if it was ok to cry now and she said go right ahead," she said.

Hoppe took the first steps towards Habitat home ownership when she attended an information meeting that was advertised in the paper.

"The meetings go through the process of what is involved in a Habitat build," said Habitat for Humanity family selection committee member Ruth Ford. "It is a good place to ask questions and gather information, see if it might work for you."

"I thought I would never qualify but I didn't know anything about it," she said. "Then I started reading more about it and went ok, maybe I will try it."

Hoppe currently lives in a run-down duplex on Mount Pleasant Drive.

"It is not in the greatest shape," she said. "The kitchen is extremely small and I have a cement basement."

Mahowich said the new home will allow her to take greater control over the health of herself and her daughter.

"Living where I do now, with my asthma, has been really hard," she said. "It will be so nice to be in a place that is clean, where you don't have to worry about smokers and other things in the house."

Mahowich is also looking forward to having things in her home that actually work.

"I ask for something to be fixed and nothing happens," she said. "I have been asking for a new window since December and still don't have a window."

Hoppe and Mahowich will make their down payment in the form of 500 hours of "sweat equity," which has to be completed before the mortgage is signed. They have already spent a number of hours working at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore and are eager to get out to the build site.

"My family is coming out for a birthday celebration July 14 and they all want to do a day at the build site," said Mahowich.

"We have two electricians and they better both be there."

The payments they make will be placed by Habitat for Humanity Camrose into a revolving fund that is used to pay for the construction of future homes.

While the build is well underway, Habitat for Humanity Camrose is still looking for volunteers to assist in whatever way they are able.

"The building is completely closed in but there is still a lot of work left to do," said Ford.

"If people could call the ReStore that would be great."

Habitat for Humanity Camrose was able to receive the land for the homes at a very good price provided that they come with attached front drive garages.

"Normally we don't build

homes with front drive garages but felt the low cost of the lots would more than make up for the extra expense," said Habitat for Humanity Camrose executive director Cody McCarroll.

Habitat for Humanity Camrose has built 18 homes in its efforts to help low income individuals "springboard out of poverty" since it was registered under the Societies Act in 1996.

The affiliate's goal is to build at least ten more homes over the next five years.

"We have seen an increase in applications and are striving to meet a growing need for affordable housing in the community," said McCarroll. "The support we receive from volunteers and donors has been greatly appreciated."

Habitat for Humanity Camrose believes that access to safe, decent and affordable housing is a basic human right that should be available to all, and it can best achieve its mission through meaningful and mutuallybeneficial partnerships with others.

Mayor proclaims Be a Tourist in Your Own Town Week

The Visitor Information Centre will be raising awareness of the things that are available to see and do in Camrose during the eighth annual Be A Tourist in Your Own Town Week, July 9 to 15.

"We want to promote Camrose businesses and tourism by encouraging people to get out and explore all the hidden gems that we have in our community," said Visitor Information Centre tourism consultant Kirsten Rudolph.

The first event will be a Kick- off Monday, where visitors to the Bill Fowler Centre will have the opportunity to talk to the tourism consultants there about their Alberta adventure, as well as enter contests.

A Mystery Train Night will be held at the Bill Fowler Centre from 5:30 to 8 p.m. July 10.

"It's a chance to experience the Camrose Mirror Lake Express like you never have before," said Rudolph.

A Geo Cache Day from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on July 11 will provide the opportunity to do some treasure hunting in Mirror Lake Park.

"We're going to be giving a modern take on an age-old activity," said tourism consultant Mariah St. Germain.

A community barbecue will be held at the Bill Fowler Centre July 12 from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

"People will have the chance to enjoy a hot dog, ride the train or participate in fun activities," said St. Germain.

The Be a Tourist in Your Own Town Week photo contest will be back once again, this time with a new twist. Photographers will be given clues they will be asked to answer with their photos.

"It is an opportunity for people to learn more about the community and showcase their own creativity," said Rudolph.

The week will wrap up July 13 with four hours of fun and games.

The action is scheduled to get underway at the Bill Fowler Centre at 11 a.m.

A vision exceeded and expanded Just over 50 years ago, Bob and Erna Burgess, of Camrose, envisioned a school for children with developmental disabilities.

Because of a skeptical public at the time, it was hard to sell the concept of education for brain damaged children but Bob and Erna would not be deterred; for them, giving up was never an option.

The first step in achieving their dream was to discuss the idea with a few individuals gathered around their dining room table. I was one of them. After hard work to overcome a variety of barriers and disappointments, a school was finally opened with five students and one certified teacher in rented space.

Last week, it was my joy and privilege to attend the annual general meeting of Camrose Association for Community Living (CAFCL) and marvel at the impressive progress that has been made in the last half century. It was extremely satisfying to compare the humble beginning with the present organization – CAFCL – which has over one hundred employees, over 400 clients, an annual budget of over $4 million, plus a vision to help all children and adults with developmental disabilities become included in all aspects of community living. That far exceeds Bob and Erna’s wildest dreams 50 years ago.

Reviewing the history of CAFCL inspires us to dream impossible dreams accompanied by an action plan to make them come true; it teaches us to be tenacious despite hardship and disappointments because, in the end, we can overcome; it encourages us to stretch our seemingly impossible dreams and strive to reach increasingly ambitious goals. Knowledge of history also teaches us to be patient, to realize that change takes time.

I commend CAFCL for what has been achieved in the last 50 years and applaud the association for the preventive measures planned for the future. Over the last 50 years we have learned that one of the causes of developmental disabilities is consumption of alcoholic beverages and/or misuse of drugs by women during pregnancy. This can result in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) which is entirely preventable but, sadly, incurable.

At present, to eradicate that destructive habit seems like an impossible dream, however, let us be encouraged by the 50-year success story of CAFCL which shows that dogged pursuit of a worthy goal achieves success in the end, in spite of hardship and disappointments along the way, Kudos to all who have supported CAFCL at any time over the past 50 years. Every bit of help, whether a donation of time, talent or money, has brought us to this significant golden anniversary. The reward is in seeing that CAFCL’s mission of inclusion is indeed possible. The hope is that CAFCL, with our continued support, will be effective in eradicating FASD.

The House of Commons has adjourned and our Conservative government has accomplished a great deal of work on behalf of Canadians since the beginning of 2012.

There is no political gridlock in Parliament; no threat of an election; and we have taken action on many policies that have been debated for years.

With a strong majority government, we are wasting no time getting things done to ensure that Canada can build on the strength of our economy.

The latest example of how hard Parliament has been working was the voting marathon caused by the 871 amendments proposed by the Opposition parties to Budget 2012.

Almost all of these amendments were aimed at completely reversing measures in the Budget rather than contributing constructive adjustments or modifications to the Budget’s policy proposals.

Considerable time and House resources, including supportstaff working around the clock, were expended dealing with these amendments. All of these extra expenses cost Canadian taxpayers.

To further delay the passage of the Budget, the NDP began “slow voting” during the voting marathon they caused.

Each NDP MP took as long as possible to cast his or her vote – slowly rising out of the chairs and then congratulating each other at length with handshakes, back-slaps, hugs and kisses before the next NDP MP slowly stood up to vote. Viewers around our riding report that they saw this as disrespectful to Canada’s

policy making and democratic procedures. All this after the NDP stated that they would vote against the Budget before they even read it.

Budget 2012, the Jobs, Growth and Long-term Prosperity Act (Bill C-38) introduced on March 29 was debated in the House for close to three months. The Finance committee created a special subcommittee to study it as per the request of the Opposition. Together, these committees held over 70 hours of meetings and heard from over 100 witnesses. Bill C-38 had more debate in Parliament than any other piece of legislation for the past 20 years.

vote ended. Budget 2012 is a large document. It contains measures that my constituents have been asking for ever since I was first elected.

These policies have been in our election campaign platforms for years. In preparing my speech, I read page after page of changes that included: eliminating multiple layers of redundant bureaucratic red-tape; collapsing and centralizing multiple governmental administrative functions; streamlining decisionmaking processes; and many other measures that will save Canadian taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars every year going forward.

The Government of Canada has an annual budgetary deficit to eliminate, and an accumulated national debt to pay down. Our challenge is to do this while global economic turmoil threatens our nation’s progress. Canadian taxpayers want the federal government to keep its hands off our wallets. Our Conservative government will balance the budget in the mid-term. We will keep taxes low for hard-working Canadians and their families and we will continue to focus on providing jobs for Canadian workers and economic growth for our country. See you this summer!

Canasta Club holds tournament Iris Baker, secretary Camrose Senior Society

June, being Camrose Canasta month, seemed to be a good time for a new venture for the Hand and Foot Canasta group. They hosted their first all-day tournament on June 9 at the Mirror Lake Centre. Competing were players and guests from Camrose, Wetaskiwin, and Sherwood Park.

Pat Lofvendahl, our MC, introduced the guests and outlined the day. She thanked all the wonderful volunteers for their time and enthusiastic effort. Refreshments and light snacks were provided throughout the day. A lunch was served at noon by Iris and Lawrence Baker. A special thank you for an excellent job and sumptuous food. Prizes were awarded.

The day was a considerable success with fantastic feedback from the players and guests.

The Camrose community came up big for the ALS Walk in Camrose on June 23. More than $12,000 was raised by 50 participants by walking or running around Mirror Lake Park.

Walk coordinator Brandee Fossen and local volunteers worked together with the ALS Society of Alberta to organize the event. The successful fundraising efforts will go towards support services for those affected by ALS and for research into the causes, treatments and a cure for the devastating disease.

“There was good weather, a wonderful turnout and great results,” said Lindsay Schalin, manager of resource development and communications at the ALS Society of Alberta. “Everyone who participated, whether they were a walker or a volunteer, contributed to making the day a success.”

Camrose’s annual walk is a part of an annual nationwide event, known as Walk for ALS. The event is a collaboration between the provincial ALS societies and the ALS Society of Canada.

New Norway residents want to make the switch from a village to a hamlet.

The majority of voters, about 59 per cent, cast their ballot to abandon the village council style of government and go back to a hamlet where they fall under the umbrella of Camrose County.

The vote was held on June 21.

Last summer, the community asked for a dissolution study to be conducted by Alberta Municipal Affairs. After collecting the information over the winter, a meeting was held in New Norway earlier in June to share the results of the study.

Out of the 323 residents, 117 votes were cast (two were rejected). Unofficially, 68 voted in favour of dissolution and 47 were against the change of status. "This was a non-binding vote and the results will be passed on to the minister of municipal affairs, along with the other information gathered in the dissolution process," said Wendy McGrath public affairs officer.

Battle River - Wainwright MLA Doug Griffiths will study the information, but doesn't have a timeline to make his decision.

“People in New Norway have expressed their view on this matter and this vote is just one step in the process of considering if New Norway should be dissolved," said Wendy. "Regardless of the outcome, the minister will review this information and decide whether or not dissolution will be recommended to cabinet and there is no legislated timeline for that decision,” said Wendy. "Once a decision has been made, the New Norway residents and the county council will be informed."

The minister will receive a complete package of information on which to base his decision. “The information package will include a copy of the written report, a summary of public feedback, village and county council feedback, public meeting feedback and the results of the non-binding vote,” Wendy added.

"I do know that since 2001, Alberta Municipal Affairs completed 30 dissolution studies and in that time only nine communities were dissolved."

The municipal affairs department held a public meeting in New Norway to respond to questions and gather written feedback on June 13. Municipal sustainability advisor Linda Reynolds, who conducted the New Norway public meeting, said local residents had until June 29 to send in written submissions.

Camrose County were advised that 50.8 per cent of the eligible voters cast a ballot. "Only 29.5 per cent of the total population voted for dissolution," said Steve Gerlitz, county administrator. "It is noted that the number is less than the required 30 per cent vote needed to conduct a dissolution study. The current municipal act is under review and the county recommends the vote for dissolution should be two-thirds of the number of eligible voters for the vote to be considered valid."

Steve also noted that the study should be completed within a year because of budget planning. Councillor Brian Austrom also added that environmental issues, such as dumps and former gas station sites should be made public in the study.

Camrose Kodiaks sign a winner

The Camrose Kodiaks signed a national champion when they inked Scott Ferguson to his start in junior hockey.

Scott was a member of the Red Deer Rebels midget triple-A hockey club that won a national championship at the Telus Cup in Leduc earlier this spring.

“Scott will be a great addition to the Kodiaks for this upcoming season. The way he plays the

game is how it is supposed to be played: with heart and passion and pride,” said Boris Rybalka, the general manager and coach of the Kodiaks. "Scott was a leader on his team this year and he led both on and off the ice with the midget Rebels. Opposing players will know when Scott is on the ice this year as most likely they will be looking up at him."

Scott finished the playoffs with seven points in 10 games

before moving onto the western and national championship. “The entire Kodiaks organization welcomes Scott and we look forward to a great year of hockey," said Boris. "Scott has a great future ahead of him and he will dictate where he will end up in his hockey career, as he has potential to one day become a pro athlete.”

The Camrose training camp opens on August 24 in the EnCana Arena.

Funding for scholarship program

By Reesor, director of the Battle River Community Foundation, presents a cheque for $4,387 for two scholarships to Jim Ofrim, principal of Camrose Composite High School, and Doug Bowie, vice chair of the Battle River School Division board of trustees.

The Battle River Community Foundation has granted $4,387 to the Battle River School Division Scholarship Program.

The grant is funded by the W.F. MacDonald Family Fund, which was created by Jean Scullion, Gordon MacDonald and Stanley MacDonald as a legacy to their parents, Fred and Margaret MacDonald. Fred was instrumental in bringing a school to Rosalind in 1923. From the time the school opened in 1923 until 1966, for 43 years, Fred served almost continuously on the local school board and was often chairman. He oversaw many additions

and a new school construction in Rosalind, as well as making the transition from local to county school boards. Fred passed away in 1974 and Margaret in 1990.

Their family wanted to create a scholarship legacy in their honour because Fred and Margaret strongly believed in continuing education. This legacy, by way of an endowment fund, creates two scholarships annually, one for a student pursuing a university program, and one for a student attending a trades program.

These scholarships are awarded annually by the Battle River School Division to worthy students.

The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects in east central Alberta which benefit local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Contributions to the Battle River Community Foundation are permanently invested in endowment funds, currently valued in excess of $6.5 million.

The principal remains untouched and the income is made available annually to support local projects such as this scholarship program.

Some grant funding is also made available by generous donors who make annual gifts to the Battle River Community Foundation.

CAFCL celebrates 50th anniversary

Camrose Association for Community Living has come a long way over the last fifty years.

Formerly the Burgess School for the Mentally Retarded, the association has developed into a strong advocate for those with developmental disabilities and brain injuries and a leader in the provision of services which help those it serves develop skills and independence and become accepted and community members.

"We've grown from one teacher and five students into an organization that has more than 110 staff and serves more than 416 individuals on a yearly basis," said CEO Esther McDonald at CAFCL's annual general meeting June 25.

Burgess School was the vision of Bob and Erna Burgess, who believed that children with disabilities should be given the chance to learn and develop their full potential.

"They had a boy, Ricky, who had a disability and felt there should be something better for him than an institution," said McDonald.

As it was later revealed, they were not the only ones that felt that way.

"My grandparents realized quite quickly that they were not alone – that there were many others who were in the same situation – and that the resources to help these children was greatly appreciated," said Tracey Ekeli. "They strongly believed that these special children mattered and were capable of great things."

The Burgess' first move was to invite a few Camrosians to their home to discuss their vision and develop a strategy for building a school – the first in rural Alberta for persons with disabilities.

"The burden of finding prospective students was the hard-

est part and it was Bob, almost single-handedly, who combed Camrose and district to find five students, the minimum number required to open a school," remembers Berdie Fowler, who was one of the school's first board members. "All this was done while Bob also held a full-time job to support his family, consisting of Erna and two small children."

The job of attracting students to the school for the first year of classes was not an easy one.

"In addition to the common belief at the time that developmentally disabled children could not be educated, parents of such children were also very protective of them, so they tended to keep them sheltered within their homes and away from the risk of public abuse," said Fowler.

The school grew rapidly, and by 1968, six years after the initial groundbreaking, the board of directors made a decision to build an addition.

In 1975 Burgess School opened a children's residence on Marler Drive to accommodate students who arrived from out of town.

"There were parents from the surrounding communities of Daysland, New Norway and Hay Lakes who wanted their children to go to school as well, but it was hard for them to drive back and forth," said McDonald.

The kids were able to stay in the residence during the week and go to school and go home on weekends."

Early teachers at the Burgess School were Mrs. Stutzman, Annabelle Omoth, Helen Sanders and Phyllis Beebe.

"It is my understanding that the teachers were paid less than if they had been teaching within the public school system," said Fowler. "They chose to do it because they believed in what could be done."

Burgess School built two more residences in 1980 and 1981, and the year after that, was integrated into the mainstream school system. In the spirit of political correctness, its name was changed twice: first to the Camrose Association for the Mentally Handicapped in 1982, and then, four years later, in 1986, to the Camrose Association for Community Living.

The 1980s also saw the genesis of what is now known as the Outreach program.

"We saw that the people who were living in the group homes could be on their own if there was someone there to help them a few times a week," said McDonald. "Today we have 28 people who are involved in the Outreach program."

Things continued to change in 1990s with the addition of a Developmental Equipment program in which the association did early intervention to support families with needs, a Teaching Independence and Parent Support program, a Sexuality program that teaches about relationships, and the Rose Club Drop-In Centre. To accommodate those who weren't cut out for group living but weren't quite ready to live in their own apartment, the association conducted a renovation which turned the basements of the group homes into apartment suites.

The 2000s started with the addition of the Meaningful Options for Role Enhancement, a program designed to provide meaningful activities for people during the day.

"Centra Cam was outgrowing their building and asked us to take some of the individuals," said McDonald. "We now have 18 people who are involved in the program."

In 2001 the association completed renovations to the building it is in today.

The Camrose Association for Community Living presented a golden anniversary award to Berdie Fowler at its annual general meeting June 26.

Fowler was a member of the original board of directors of the Burgess School for Retarded Children.

"It was difficult to find people fifty years ago who were willing to take on the challenge and champion this type of organization," said award presenter and CAFCL board member Jason Schiele.

"Thankfully Mrs. Fowler was there to do that."

Schiele said Fowler was deemed by CAFCL to be the perfect award recipient.

"We were looking for someone who had been involved with the Camrose association for all 50 years. Anyone who had some

kind of hand in the journey CAFCL has taken to get to its current state."

Schiele said Fowler has been a very important supporter of CAFCL, both as an individual and through The Camrose Booster, the business her family operates.

Fowler said her contribution to Burgess School and CAFCL has been small compared to others, like Bob and Erna Burgess, who envisioned what many at the time believed to be an impossible dream.

"They never considered giving up as an option. From a humble beginning of one teacher, five students in rented quarters, their vision has far exceeded their wildest dreams: today's inclusion of all developmentally disabled children and adults in all aspects of community living."

CAFCL makes Ricky Burgess ambassador for 2012-13

The Camrose Association for Community Living has chosen Ricky Burgess as its ambassador for 2012-13.

"We thought it appropriate in celebrating our 50th anniversary to choose the son of the couple who started it all," said CAFCL CEO Esther McDonald June 25.

Richard Arthur Burgess, born in August, 1954, was the first student on the Burgess School enrolment list. He moved to Calgary after completing his schooling in order to attend day programs, then to Wetaskiwin in 1993, to live with his sister, when his father's health started to fail. He returned to Camrose in 2005 and has been a member of the Camrose Association for Community Living ever since.

"Ricky is a kind, caring, gentle and very happy guy," said his niece, Tracey Ekeli. "His family is very important to him and he never turns down an opportunity to spend time with them."

Ricky looks forward to his daily trips to Tim Horton's and getting his morning paper. He also likes to swim, attend his

nephews' hockey games, and listen to music.

"Music was a big part of Ricky's life growing up," said Ekeli. "He took voice lessons with a musical therapist and learned

to play the xylophone. When he played he played with such heart and energy."

Ricky loves to spend time with Ekeli's husband, Kalvin.

"When those two get togeth-

er the mischief grows significantly," said Ekeli. "They thought it would be a great idea that Rick have some driving lessons so the two of them jumped in the old farm truck and drove out into the

field. After much discussion and a few pointers from my husband, Rick was in the driver's seat driving that old truck, all the while yelling 'Ricky drive, Ricky drive.'"

Ekeli said Ricky's fun loving side and zest for life are an inspiration to those who know him.

"In his own way he is taking part in continuing the legacy that his parents, my grandparents, started so many years ago. His great niece, my daughter, has been accepted into the Bachelor of Education program with a specialization in teaching kids with special needs, for she, too, understands the need and has seen the special qualities that people with developmental disabilities have. She knows we can learn so much from them."

Ekeli said Bob and Erna Burgess were proud of their son and the Burgess School.

"They would be so amazed and happy with the growth that has been achieved since the birth of their vision. These people are all special and have much to offer and teach us. They display such unconditional love and a zest for life."

Camrose Association has taken advantage of the recent advancements in technology to assist with the delivery of services. Through utilization of iPads, several individuals with disabilities who have struggled with communication, behaviour management and anxiety have been given a way to express their needs, feelings and wants.

"Some amazing applications provide assistance with everything from talking to calming down," said a report by McDonald and CAFCL president Colin Atkinson. "Finding the applications and training staff and individuals on these applications is a current focus."

The TIPS program now has an additional component called Parent Child Assistance, which provides long term support to the women who have a history of alcohol and drug abuse and are at risk of giving birth to children affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. The program also provides support to parents who may be affected by FASD themselves and are experiencing challenges in parenting.

"As of March 31 we have 16 women accessing this program," said McDonald. "We have been asked to extend the service to Wetaskiwin as there is no Parent Child Assistance program there."

Over the past year, many training opportunities were provided for the individuals with CAFCL thanks in part to funding from Battle River Community Foundation. Topics included fire safety, home safety, personal best, safety and first aid for children.

A self advocates group assists persons with disabilities with acquiring new skills so they can speak up for themselves, while the Brain Injury Outreach Program assists those who have acquired a brain injury from a stroke or accident.

Camrose Association for Community Living has hired three individuals with disabilities to train staff in areas ranging from client rights to informed consent.

"The staff are learning from people with disabilities and the roles have been reversed," said McDonald.

"Our family would like to thank the association for continuing and embracing with such great care and pride the vision and legacy started some 50 years ago and bringing it into the next millennium. It takes a special kind of person and much dedication to do the things the Camrose association has done and will continue to do."

Fowler said from a humble beginning of one teacher and five students in rented quarters, the Burgess vision has far exceeded their wildest dreams: today's inclusion of all developmentally disabled children in all aspects of community living.

Christine Benyon, daughter of Barbara Benyon, has been awarded a $10,800 Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship. She is pursuing her Master's Degree in Petroleum Geology at the University of Calgary and is currently employed by Imperial Oil in Calgary.

The Camrose Association for Community Living presented its individual donor champion award to former board member Dale Nesvold.

"He has been a long-time supporter of CAFCL for many years," said CAFCL CEO Esther McDonald.

Nesvold and his wife, Joni, believe CAFCL is a valuable organization that makes a difference in the lives of many people.

"We are part of a community here in Camrose where we have people who could use a hand – people who should be treated with dignity and respect and embraced as members involved in our community," said Nesvold. "I am grateful and proud to have been part of what the people of CAFCL are accomplishing. They are a vital and a valuable asset to our community."

CAFCL presented its volunteer champion award to Wayne Sampson for the time he spends with Rodger on woodworking projects. One of the projects, a birdhouse, was sold at the Camrose Association for Community Living charity auction.

"Some people call it volunteering, I call it spending time with a friend," said Sampson.

Rodger is unable to communicate with words but he communicates with Wayne through his eyes and emotions.

The Camrose Association for Community Living community champion award was presented to the Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak.

"The Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak is truly a wonderful organization," states the CAFCL annual report.

"The club has made significant monetary donations that have helped fund various programs at CAFCL. They have also taken the time out of their busy lives to help give one CAFCL residence a facelift with a new coat of paint on the doors. The help we receive from clubs like this is truly appreciated, and we value the partnerships we have."

Michelle Gainsforth, who has been accepted into the fetal alcohol spectrum disorder education program offered through Lethbridge College, was the recipient of the CAFCL disability scholarship.

Gainsforth will continue to work at CAFCL while she is completing her course work.

Dennis Sturrock was recipient of the Persons with Developmental Disabilities' 2012 self advocacy award. Sturrock has been involved with CAFCL for 23 years, accessing outreach support, then living in a CAFCL residence, and now in an approved home. He is currently the past president of the Rose Club and is an active CAFCL member.

Marcy Dawn Brausen was born June 11, 1969 to Don and Marion Mattis in Calgary, Alberta. Marcy was the youngest of three children. She was raised in Hanna until grade six when the family moved to Bawlf. In 1986 she married Dennis Brausen and had three children; Samantha in 1991, Michael in 1997, Thomas in 2007. Marcy’s kids were the light of her life, everything was done with the kids in mind. She loved camping and quading and many weekends were spent down at Herder’s river land. Marcy started working for Canada Post in 1989 delivering rural route mail, first at RR#1 Camrose followed by New Norway rural mail until her death on June 25, 2012. She will be remembered with love and missed greatly by family and friends.

Marcy is survived by her husband Dennis; children Sam, Mike and Tom of Camrose; parents Don and Marion Mattis of Westlock; brother Phil Mattis of Camrose; father-in-law George Brausen of Camrose; sisters-in-law Cindy Scott, Jacalyn Brausen, Cathy (Albert) Stacey all of Camrose; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Kevin Mattis and mother-in-law Marlene Brausen.

A funeral service was held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, June 28, 2012 from Messiah Lutheran Church with Rev. Jeff Nilsson officiating.

Interment followed in the Greenview Cemetery, Rosalind, Alberta.

Lillian Jane Boyko passed away peacefully Friday June 22, 2012 at the age of 62 years, with her sons by her side at the Drumheller Hospital, following her courageous battle with cancer. Lil is survived by her mother Stella Stefure; sons Kelly (Sharla) Boyko and Jaime (Sasha) Boyko; brothers Ron (Jane) Stefure and Bob (Marilyn) Stefure; grandchildren Talyn, Kya, Max and Sam; brother-in-law Kevin (Michelle) Boyko; sister-in-law Karen (Lee) Naslund; numerous nieces and nephews Melanie, Erin, Brenna, Tony, Toby, Jed, Sophie, Karla, Amy, Nikky, Surge, and Sloane; and so many wonderful family members and friends.

Lil was predeceased by her husband Barry Boyko and her father Tony Stefure.

Lil was born in Edmonton, Alberta, where she excelled playing all sports through high school, and eventually playing Team Canada Basketball. After completing her schooling, Lil met and fell in love with Barry. They were married on May 6, 1972 and later that same year settled in Drumheller. 1974 was a big year, as Lil and Barry purchased what was to become Shady Grove Campground. This happy moment was to pale in comparison to the birth of their sons Kelly in 1974 and Jaime in 1976. Some of Lil’s fondest memories were of the times spent enjoying the outdoors, whether it be one of the numerous family hunting trips, managing the campground, camping at the lake, or enjoying a daily round of golf which she excelled at, winning many championships.

Lil will always be remembered as a hardworking woman, known for her gifted athletic ability (golf, bowling, basketball, baseball, curling), artistic talents, and funloving, competitive nature. Lil was a loving mother, who put family first and took great pride and joy in the happiness of her boys and family.

She was a wonderful cook, who put countless hours into preparing family favourites. She was an outgoing sports enthusiast, who spent many weekends enjoying the company of her boys on the way to a hockey game, or golf tournament and, in recent years, took great joy in spending time with her grandkids, whether she was cheering in the hockey arena, dance theatre or just enjoying a visit. Lil will be deeply missed, and fondly loved by many. Her legacy will live on forever in the hearts of all whose lives she touched. We know she will be smiling down on us, cheering us on in our journeys.

A prayer vigil was held on Friday, June 29, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. from St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church.

A Divine Liturgy was held on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. from St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Slavko Dumec officiating. Interment followed in the Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose.

Legion Ladies' Auxiliary celebrates 65 years

On June 26, the Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion celebrated 65 years of having a ladies' auxiliary.

"The men at that time were not in favour of accepting female members," said president Grace Torpe. "There were too few members to start a separate branch, so they joined with the wives of ex-service men to form a ladies' auxiliary. They formed in 1947 with Ann Stover as the president."

The ladies' auxiliary started in May, 1947, with nine charter members, even though they had 47 members at that time. "This has caused great confusion ever since," added Grace. "The founders of the auxiliary and other members of the era were hardy and an innovative lot, catering to weddings and other large functions. Catering is never an easy task and to think they did it without a properly equipped kitchen boggles the mind. Imagine the time they spent collecting, storing and cashing in Nabob coupons, which they used to purchase three coffee urns. Imagine the number of coupons it took to do that."

In July, 1949 they started holding bingos. "At that time it was against the law, therefore they cancelled it later that year," shared Grace. "Scholarships were set up with banks for babies with $1 in each account."

The ladies supported several charities in the early years, along with some innovative ideas. "In 1950, the Robin Hood flour people asked the ladies' auxiliary if they could sponsor a tea and introduce their new product, something new at the time, called cake mixes. A bake sale and tea were held in the old Masonic Temple, which later became the Bank of Montreal and later where Inspirations Spa and Salon is now located," explained Grace. "The cake mixes, chocolate, white and gingerbread, were supplied free of charge and a profit of $49.07 was realized."

Hall renovations were completed in 1951 at the Legion located where the Masonic Lodge is now. "The kitchen was moved from the west end of the hall to the east end. Some of you

may have been members when we were housed in that building," added Grace. "The Legion asked the ladies to assist in the fair booth, at the hockey games (the Legion sponsored the junior hockey team) and with lunch after the Armistice Day parade.

It was a lot of work, but a lot of fun too."

The ladies first offered a $50 scholarship to a service person's son or daughter, in 1950, to the student with the highest marks in Grade 12. "Scholarships are still handed out today, just with higher amounts."

Christmas parties were held at Rosehaven and Bethany and later the veterans were transported to the Legion for parties.

"In 1952, the ladies' auxiliary assisted with Decoration Day and there were 38 veterans' graves at that time," reported Grace.

In 1954, a children's Christmas party was started. In 1957, the first zone rally was held. Then in 1961 the Legion's name was changed to the Royal Canadian Legion. In 1967, our move was made to this present site."

The Legion purchased the former bowling alley on 48 Avenue and completely renovated the building.

The ladies decided to get out of the catering business and started the Cotton Ball, a formal affair held during Jaywalkers' Jamboree and a Hobo dance in the fall to raise funds. "The Cotton Ball was a smash hit for years until the bars offered free dancing. It was no longer feasible and was dropped in 1981," said Grace. "The Hobo dance hung in a littler longer."

Since then the ladies have held many events to raise funds to help community events and people. "A new era is upon us as we search for a new building. In the past, we have expanded as we outgrew our buildings. Now this time we will be downsizing.

It is important to support the ladies' auxiliary and our branch now more than ever to stay active and viable. Let's move forward together."

Service pins were presented to several members, including a 50-year honour to Lorna Jwasko and a 45-year pin to Grace Torpe.

Pick your own berries near Miquelon Lake

Berries seem to taste better when you pick them yourself.

MoonDruid - Berries U-pick and Market Garden offers the opportunity to pick fresh raspberries, honeyberries (haskap) and black currants near Miquelon Lake.

Owners of the u-pick, Marian and John Girvan, give customers three options for purchasing berries. You can save money by picking them yourself, the Girvans can pick them for you or you can buy berries at the Camrose Farmers' Market on Saturday mornings at the Duggan Mall.

"We have three varieties of raspberries called Red Bounty, Boyne and Honeyqueen (yellow/ orange). We have about an acre in production for the raspberry u-pick, which is not too huge or small," said John. "Since we opened two years ago, we have had a lot of repeat customers."

The berries that the Girvans pick are spread onto trays and quickly frozen individually to retain the freshness. Then the berries are bagged and weighed.

"Most people prefer to make jams, but the berries can be used in all sorts of culinary dishes. We were asked to supply raspberries for the Camrose County awards banquet earlier this year and they went over quite well. The county likes to support local producers and so do we," said John.

The Girvans book picking times with customers to pick to ensure they have enough berries for them. "It is by appointment only. We don't want people coming in just after the berries have been completely picked over. We make sure the berries are here and that they are ripe," added John. "We also have other clients that we pick for, so we try to time everything to keep the customers happy. That is why we expanded last year by adding more canes."

The u-pick also has expanded to include the popular and healthy honeyberries. "This part of the operation is new and the shrubs are not fully developed yet. Honeyberries are the first berries to set fruit and ripen and they are very healthy for you.

They ripen two weeks earlier than strawberries and they are well suited to the Canadian climate and set fruit at -7째C. They originated from Siberia and are very hardy," said John. "They set their fruit at the end of May, ripening at the end of June and

picking is over within a threeday period. Everything happens bang, bang, bang and we have to be ready for it."

The honeyberries were further developed by Dr. Bob Bors at the University of Saskatchewan to produce larger and more flavourful berries. "We have four varieties of honeyberries. Borealis is our main crop variety along with Tundra, Svetlana and Blue Belle for our pollinators, you have to have two different varieties in order to get a good crop," explained John. "Honeyberries are really high in anthocyanin antioxidants and vitamin C. The ripe fruit are 2 cm long and are deep blue outside and bright red inside. They should be ripe the first week in July. We are a little behind this year because we haven't had the hotter weather.

Last year, they were ready by July 1 and done by July 3. It is a very short season, so right now we are picking them ourselves."

Then after some maintenance, the raspberry season starts the second or third week in July.

"The season runs until the third week in August and then we are done. It all depends on the growing season, sometimes it will go longer," John said. "At the same time the black currants are ripening. They have about the same season as raspberries, but we don't have as many black currants."

The Girvans do have some honeyqueen raspberries that produce fruit up to the September long weekend and are also available for picking.

"We take our berries and market garden products to the farmers' market every Saturday in Camrose during the summer.

Our son said we should take our produce to Edmonton, but we do okay in Camrose and the volume is just right for us. I'm supposed to be retired, but this keeps me busy and it is something that I've wanted to do. I worked for Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, Food Safety Division, so this seemed like a natural fit for me to semi-retire."

Last year the berry farm sold about 300 pounds of raspberries and this year MoonDruid could double that amount. "It's a lot of work to pick early and then sit at the farmers' market. It's seasonal work, and in the spring we have to get everything ready. It's about four to six hours a day. During

the picking season it is about 10 hours a day," said John. "Then we due severe pruning in the fall and trim them back to about four new canes for each crown. We try to keep them to a comfortable level for picking."

The berry u-pick farm uses

leaf mulch instead of fertilizers to retain soil moisture and keep the raspberries natural. "We are not organic, but we try to be as natural as possible. We don't allow people to pick if they use repellants with DEET in them.

Thankfully, the mosquitoes have been a lot less this year."

Armena residents to learn about water initiative

Area ratepayers will have the opportunity to discuss the Armena Water and Wastewater Initiative at a public meeting on Wednesday, July 4, at the Armena Lutheran Church, beginning at 7 p.m.

Camrose County gave first reading to a bylaw to launch the process of conducting an environmental study.

County administrator Steve Gerlitz recommended that Camrose County move forward with the watercourse assessment study to be done by Aquality Environmental Consulting, which is required by Alberta Environment.

"The project cost is $23,100 with funding to come from the 2012 Armena Water and Wastewater Capital Project fund," said Steve.

ISL Engineering Services will charge $697,986 for both the Armena and Duhamel water project.

The ISL agreement includes engineering services, developing and investigating different methods of dealing with wastewater treatment in Armena and Duhamel with both on site treatment and trucking, preparing capital cost and operational cost comparisons, developing different routing/options to distribute water and collect waste-water, obtaining information from the regional water commissions and developing concepts and a location regarding how regional water will enter and be distributed within Phase A. Phase B is expected to cost

$469,590 and Phase C came in at $178,396 for a total of $697,986.

"If the project or any part is abandoned at any stage, or if any stage of the professional consultant's work is unduly delayed for reasons beyond his control, or if the contracts for the construction and installation of the work are not awarded within 60 days after the completion of the drawings and specifications, the consultant shall be entitled to payment for planning and designing," said Steve.

Three water samples must be taken before the design of the wastewater system can take place (spring, summer, fall).

The petition period for the residents is until July 18. However, Camrose County approved the watercourse assessment with

samples to speed up the process if it proceeds. "If we don't, it would mean a 2014 construction schedule, which may increase the cost of the project because of inflation," explained Steve.

If the county does receive a petition from the residents, the assessment could be stopped, and the county would be responsible to pay for what was started.

Wei Ming Chew, ISL said in his letter dated June 19, "Referring to the attached engineering schedule, the receiving watercourse assessment is slotted for completion in October 2012 with the final design for completion in December 2012 and construction in the fall of 2013. Any deviations from the original schedule including the delay of the watercourse assessment may effectively delay

environmental approvals and lead to modifications in design, construction schedule and sampling requirements, which increases the overall cost of the project.

As a result, it is recommended that we proceed with a modified watercourse assessment that will start the sampling program as soon as possible to establish effluent and quality objectives by the end of 2012 sampling season, and then followed by additional sampling in the spring and early summer of 2013 to ensure runoff conditions are captured."

The Armena Water and Wastewater project is estimated to cost $4,538,061 and Duhamel's project is estimated at $1,234,134.

Councillors appointed to board of governors

By Dan Jensen City councillors Daryl Shillington and Greg Wood and Community Services general manager Paul Nielsen have been appointed as City of Camrose representatives on the Camrose Performing Arts Centre board of governors.

The board of governors will consist of six members – three from the City and three from Augustana – who, in addition to establishing a budget for the CPAC, will set policies and operational guidelines.

"The CPAC board of governors shall ensure that UAlberta has a right to use the Collaborative Facility for academic programs and partnerships

and that the Collaborative Facility is accessible to the general public in a manner that permits the City to comply with its obligation pursuant to the Major Community Enhancement Program grant funding agreement," stated a report presented to City council June 25.

The mandate of the board, as described in the CPAC Collaborative Facility Agreement, is to "provide leadership, vision, continuity of purpose and accountability to the parties through governance, but not through day-to-day management, of the CPAC collaboration, with the exception of those matters falling within the

mandate of the steering committee."

The agreement also states the board "shall establish a set of principles related to the policies and procedures of CPAC, without limitation, policies with respect to priority use."

Informal discussions held with the University of Alberta concluded that the board would be right-sized at six members.

Councillor Brandon Blatz disagreed that one of the members of the board be a member of City of Camrose administration.

"This is a policy-making board," said Blatz, "and the policy makers are members of City council. Represen-

tatives of administration should be there, but as nonvoting members."

Blatz said council is descending a slippery slope when it appoints members of administration to policy boards.

"We don't give a vote to our City manager."

The mayor of Camrose is not allowed to sit on the board as he is a part of the dispute resolution process.

Councillor Max Lindstrand expressed appreciation to Wood and Shillington for their willingness to be City representatives.

"With all the other duties of council members it is an onerous commitment," he said.

Museum request turned down Council turned down a request by Camrose and District Centennial Museum Society to appoint a council representative to the museum board.

"Organizations like the Handivan Society and Senior Centre Society invite councillors to attend the annual meeting," said councillor Lindstrand.

"I would like that rather than having a formal representative on the committee."

Councillor Daryl Shillington said councillors could support the museum society in ways other than serving on the board.

Sturrock earns prestigious Doreen Befus Award

The Camrose community is a better place because of Dennis Sturrock. He is quick to volunteer and takes an active role in many projects and events.

The Centra Cam client didn't think long when the Camrose Association for Community Living (CAFCL) needed an ambassador to promote its public awareness campaign, Mission Inclusion…It’s Possible. CAFCL wanted Dennis because he personifies the message they wanted to get across.

The Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) Central Region community board reached the same conclusion when it named Dennis as this year’s recipient of the Doreen Befus Award. The award recognizes an adult with a developmental disability whose actions have helped make the community a more welcoming place for people with disabilities. Doreen was known for her fight for self advocacy against the government.

Board chair Ron Crossley presented the award on June 7 at the Self-Advocates in Motion conference in Red Deer. Before announcing Dennis' name, Ron played a guessing game with the assembled self-advocates, giving a series of hints about the winner.

"This individual stands up in public and says, ‘This is who I am, these are what my challenges are, and this is how I’ve overcome them.' This individual is a

person who has said, “I can be a contributor to our community.

Our community is better because I am here." This person represents the service provider who supports him as an ambassador at fundraising events and this individual is a role model. You and I can look at this individual and say, ‘This is how I should be in my community.'"

By the time Ron had mentioned that the award winner works at a medical clinic (Smith Clinic) and volunteers for the Camrose Kodiaks hockey team and the University of Alberta, Augustana campus hockey and volleyball clubs, the audience was yelling out the name Dennis Sturrock. Dennis also enjoys bowling and he helped sell 3,000 duck toys to raise funds for Centra Cam. Dennis ran to the podium to accept his award and carried it in triumph above his head as he returned to his table. “I felt very excited when I got the award,” he said later. “My mom and dad came and they were very proud of me too.”

Dennis introduced the guest speakers at the conference from June 6 to 8. He helps stamp hands at the admission door for sports teams and also sells 50/50 ticket, He swims and plays slowpitch ball. Dennis is also an executive member of the Rose Club, an adult drop-in centre where members plan and participate in social, recreational and educational activities.

Local runners enter the Alberta Summer Games

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Camrose track athletes Stewart Payne and Natalia Klutz not only had a successful season for the Charlie Killam School, they also earned a trip to the Alberta Summer Games in Lethbridge.

By Murray Green Two Charlie Killam School Grade 8 students will be competing for Zone 4 in track events at the Alberta Summer Games in Lethbridge on July 26 to 29.

"I got the idea to try out for the Alberta Summer Games from Mr. (Jayson) Boyson because he thought it would be a great opportunity to go for it," said Natalia Klutz. "I went to qualifiers, even though I had a sprained ankle. It was an amazing opportunity. We went to St. Albert and I qualified in the 100 and 200 metre relay events. I'm an alternate for the long jump."

Teammate Stewart Payne qualified in the 1,200 and 2,000 metre running events on May 26, between other track meets.

"It was a busy time. Divisionals were before, so it was kind of nice to ease into it," said Stewart. "It was good to know what to expect before going into it (qualifying for the Games)." Natalia agreed, "It was good to be prepared, instead of just going into it."

Zones 4, 5 and 6 all had the tryouts in the same meet, so the athletes already received a taste of what to expect at the Games.

Each zone selects 20 athletes, 10 girls and 10 boys. "You could enter as many events as you wanted to be in. It increases your chances of qualifying because they can only take so many athletes," said Stewart. "I also tried out for the 800 metre, but I like the longer distances."

Natalia has something to

prove at the Summer Games.

"I'm really happy about making the team. I didn't do as well as I could have (because of the injury), so receiving the call that I made the team was good because I want to show them that I can do better," she said.

"My goal was just to make the team and not set any other goals of winning any medals," added Stewart. "I want the experience of going. I went to the Winter Games in cross-country skiing and it was a lot of fun and a great way to meet friends. It is exciting to go back and see some of the people that I met before."

Stewart admitted that the competition isn't the only reason he wants to go to the Summer Games. "One guy I met at crosscountry skiing in the Winter Games is in both of my events in running. I also think the opening ceremonies are cool and I look forward to that experience.

It's like a miniature Olympics."

The 14-year-old athletes want to seize the opportunity to represent the community at the games. "I'm hoping to meet new people and make friends.

Through practices, coaches and the (bus) trip to Lethbridge; it's a chance to get to know others," said Natalia. "We have practice in Red Deer before we go to the Games."

The competition will heat up in Lethbridge. "I think there will be a lot of close races. I'm going to train hard and push it. It will be awesome to see all of the top

athletes from across Alberta trying their best," Natalia said.

"Just the experience is the main thing for me. To compete against the best of the best is kind of cool," added Stewart.

Both runners enjoy track and have not only competed in school events but at the Edmonton Journal Indoor Games as well. "Both athletes have been training for the Indoor Games since January, so that has helped them," explained Mr. Boyson.

"Because of that, their athletic build-up is higher. We don't have a lot of time to prepare for the track meet season, so we rely on the athletes who are already in shape."

Both athletes believe in cross-training. "I have dance from the beginning of September until the end of May. I also play soccer to get my endurance up," shared Natalia.

"I do a lot of cross-country skiing and I play basketball to prepare for running," said Stewart. "Stewart belongs to the fitness club at school and he pushes himself," added Mr. Boyson.

"With Natalia, when she does something, it's at 110 per cent.

Both are pretty driven."

Coaching this spring made a difference for the athletes. "We want to thank all of our coaches for helping us and showing us the idea of going to the Games," they said.

All-new Escape raises bar

The all new Ford Escape at Lamb Ford Sales in Camrose is proof you can make a good thing better.

"It raises the bar with 11 new exclusive features and fuel economy projected to top any vehicle of its kind on the market today," said Lamb Ford Sales sales manager Brett Read.

Ford calls the new Escape the "smarter utility vehicle" because it offers the strengths that customers value – fuel economy, versatility and new technology that makes driving and living with the vehicle easier and more fun – all wrapped into a sleek, more modern design.

"Ford understands that more people every year are looking at vehicles like Escape, and we want to give them even more reasons to buy," said Raj Nair, group vice president, Global Product Development.

Ford Escape's new EcoBoost technology combines twin independent variable camshift timing, turbocharging and direction injection to let you get plenty of power out of every drop of fuel. The 1.6 litre EcoBoost fourcylinder uses just 9.1 litres per 100 km in the city and 6.0 litres per 100 on the highway. The 2.0 litre EcoBoost four cylinder uses just 9.5 litres per 100 km in the city and 6.7 litres per 100 km on the highway while delivering 240 horsepower and 270 lb.ft. of torque. The 2.0 litre easily enables Escape to tow up to 1,588 kg when properly equipped.

The standard engine is an updated 2.5 litre with 168 horsepower and 170 lb.-ft. of torque.

All three engines are mated to a six-speed SelectShift Automatic transmission with Sport Mode.

The Escape can make itself more aerodynamic and fuel efficient with its class-exclusive active grille shutters. When closed, they help to reduce vehicle drag caused by air travelling through the engine compartment.

Torque Vectoring Control seamlessly enhances hold on the road, while electric power-assisted steering enables pull-drift compensation to help correct for road irregularities and improve overall steering feel.

The spacious all-new Ford Escape features more hip room, more second-row leg room and more rear cargo room than ever before. A carnival is coming to Camrose. The carnival will be held to celebrate the opening of the Camrose Kodiaks' regular season on September 7 and 8.

The fun event begins at 4:30 and goes until 7 p.m. in the parking lot of the EnCana Arena with children's games and a tail gate barbecue. What's a carnival without bears and horses? Well, Camrose will have both as the Kodiaks face the Calgary Mustangs on Friday at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Kodiaks host the Grande Prairie Storm.

Children who attend elementary schools in Camrose will be allowed in at no charge for both games.

Games at the carnival may include bean bag toss, face painting, chalk colouring, pie toss, bounce house, baseball toss, hockey shooting, ice cream making, cotton candy making, basketball shooting and even an eating competition. The old-fashioned nickel carnival will ensure that your $1 will go a long way.

The Camrose Kodiaks will also officially open the Alberta Junior Hockey League's 49th regular season on September 7.

On September 27 to 29, the sixth annual AJHL Showcase Weekend will return to the TransAlta Tri Leisure Centre in Spruce Grove. Each team will play one home game and one road game during the event, which will be included in league standings.

The playoffs will start on March 5, 2013. Each division will playoff to determine a divisional champion. The north champion and the south champion will then compete in the league final for the right to play in the Western Canada Cup.

Camrose will host Five Peaks running race Saturday, July 14

BEEF FOR THE FOOD BANK The Holden Colony donated approximately 800 lbs. of processed beef to Camrose and District Food Bank June 22. "I saw an ad in the paper saying that the Food Bank needed meat, so I talked to the management team about making a donation and everyone agreed," said Hofer Colony general manager Darius Hofer, who presented the beef to NeighborAid program director Jo-Anne Tweed (above).

Holden Colony plans to continue to assist the Food Bank in the future with whatever garden products are not sold at the farmers' markets it attends. Tweed said NeighborAid is grateful for its relationship with Holden Colony and noted that the donation of beef will be well received by those the Food Bank helps.

Runners across central and northern Alberta have Camrose circled on their map.

The Camrose ski trails will be used this summer by about 400 people for a Five Peaks running race on Saturday, July 14.

The race begins north of the biathlon stadium and opens with a long downhill run into the valley then winds through the picturesque ski trails. "This is our second year in Camrose and I started running several years earlier. Kamren Farr of Five Peaks decided to move a race from an area called Blackfoot to Camrose," said Neal Isnor, one of the local organizers. "He wanted a harder, challenging course, as well as a fun course.

We were talking one day and I said you have to come out to Camrose. We can give you a tough course."

After several rainy days last year prior to the event, it cleared off for a sunny race.

"We had some temporary bridges and we are moving in the direction of making them permanent. The biggest change this year, on the positive side, will be less mosquitoes," said Neal jokingly. "Runners are attracted to Camrose because it is a tougher course."

Registration begins at 8:30

a.m. and then the Scotiabank Children's Challenge starts at 9:30 a.m. After a pre-race briefing, the main race begins at 10 a.m. A prize and awards ceremony follows at 12:30 p.m.

Awards are presented to the top three male and female finishers in each age category, in all distances, as well as to the top three male and female finishers overall.

"This race is about promoting health and fitness." is eight km and the enduro course is 12.5 km. "Some people are competitive, while others just want to have fun staying in shape," said Neal.

"We have different lengths to attract all types of runners.

We have a children's race to attract families and make it a family event."

The Camrose race also attracts more local runners.

"Camrose has some outstanding runners right now. Gerhard Lotz and Robert Renman

have done a remarkable job with the university cross-country running program. A runner came from the university and entered three out of the five races and set a record in all three races," said Neal. "It's a good area for running. It's inexpensive and a great way to stay in shape. I know the schools like it because you don't have to cut anyone. Everyone competes against themselves, instead of each other. It appeals to so many different types of people."

First aid and water stations will be set up for the runners. First aid attendants will be located throughout the course with radio communication. A course sweep will travel behind the last racer.

"This race is about promoting health and fitness. If you don't want to run, come out and walk. Even in the Five Peaks series, only 10 to 20 per cent are going for the competition," Neal said. "Everyone else is participating for health and fitness reasons. We have people over 70 in this series. It is such a positive atmosphere."

Due to racer safety and the number of participants, no dogs, headphones, strollers, baby joggers or Nordic walking poles will be allowed. Spectators are welcome at the start/ finish area.

Camrose Chrysler supports Sea Serpents program

The Camrose Sea Serpents are off to another good season thanks to Camrose Chrysler.

The summer swim club was the beneficiary of a May promotion that saw the Camrose dealership donate $100 from the sale of every new or used vehicle.

"We sold 61 vehicles, allowing us to donate a total of $6,100," said Camrose Chrysler general manager Mike Rodin.

The donation will help the Camrose Sea Serpents meet costs associated with pool rentals, swim meets, coaching, life guards and equipment, as well as Alberta Summer Swimming Association registrations.

"Membership registration fees do not cover the entire budget for operating a competitive swim club," said Camrose Sea Serpents president Wayne Rolston. "Without fundraising or community donations, membership registration fees would have to be increased to an undesirable level, thereby dramatically discouraging sport participation."

Rodin has three children who are involved with the Camrose Sea Serpents.

"I think it is a very worthy group," said Rodin. "The kids learn so much and the bang for the buck as far as sports goes in the community is probably the best there is. The way it operates you would find it hard to find a better sports organization in the city."

"Everyone on the sales team was totally on board and made sure all the customers knew what we were doing," said Rodin. "There was one person who didn't

wind up purchasing a vehicle but donated $100 anyway.

The Camrose Sea Serpents' main objective is to encourage members in the development of swimming techniques and give them an opportunity to compete against swimmers from other clubs in individual and team events.

"We have about 77 members in the club right now, so we are very strong," said Rolston. "We have already been

to a few events and many of the kids have been competing very well. At the meet we attended in Sherwood Park many of them actually beat their previous best times."

The Camrose Sea Serpents hosted their home meet at the NAIT pool June 24.

The Camrose Sea Serpents Club is a member of the Alberta Summer Swim Association and through it, the Swim Alberta and Swim Canada.

The Alberta Summer Swim Association has 66 clubs within Alberta.

Camrose Chrysler has been a major supporter of the Camrose Sea Serpents the last two years. A promotion in May of 2011 resulted in the dealership making a donation in the amount of $5,100."

TOILET REBATE PROGRAM To encourage water conservation, the City of Camrose is offering a $70 toilet rebate when you replace your old toilet with a low flow model. The toilet is one of the largest water consuming appliances, attributing to nearly 30% of total indoor water use in residential homes and up to 45% in some businesses or institutions.

This program is offered to anyone with a water account with the City of Camrose including residents, businesses, and institutions who apply within the determined time frame. Conditions apply in order to qualify for this program. The rebate is $70 for one toilet; and a 25% rebate for the cost of each additional toilet (up to a maximum of $50 per toilet).

To apply: 1. Complete a toilet rebate application form.

2. Provide the original receipt of purchase of new, approved low-flow toilet(s).

(Will be returned with rebate.)

3. Provide pictures of the toilet/bathroom, before and after installation.

4. Provide evidence that the old toilet was made non-functional.
