Junior Achievers leave a legacy at Sifton By Dan Jensen

Students in Ecole Sifton's Grade 6 Junior Achievement program planted Laurel Leaf willow, Snowy mountain ash, and Dakota birch trees and a Miss Kim lilac bush in the school's reflecting park on the final day of school, June 27. The trees and lilac were purchased by the students with the profits from their business – The Balloon Bakers – which sold baking, popcorn, lemonade and balloons during the school's sports day. "We made $1,000, which was pretty good," said the chief business operator Vanessa Cha. "We actually had to go and get more supplies to sell because we ran out." Balloon Bakers was organized into different departments, including sales, merchandising, bookkeeping, promotions and set up and take down. "Everyone had a job to do and we had lots of fun," said chief financial officer Ryder Willoughby. The students received good support in their venture from a number of local businesses. Duggan Cinemas provided the popcorn, while Party Maxx provided the balloons. The trees were provided at a discounted price by Wesroc Landscaping Supplies. The experience gave students a new appreciation for what it takes for an entrepreneur to run a successful operation. "It was a challenge but it is always good to have a challenge," said Cha. One of the most exciting parts of the Junior Achievement program for Samantha Fehr was seeing fellow students popping the balloons and playing the games the business had set up. Fehr said she was surprised with the amount of money that was raised. "We thought we would probably make $300 or something like that but we made a lot more." Sifton School teacher Craig Jensen said it was rewarding to see how the students embraced the challenge the Junior Achievement program put in front of them. "They were completely involved. They made all the phone calls and all the arrangements. They ran the show and it was their business. They learned a lot about leadership, they learned a lot about group dynamics and they learned a lot about the rewards of doing something themselves and being able to have more control over what they were doing." Junior Achievement is the world's largest organization dedicated to educating students about work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs. The program ties in well with Alberta Education's desire to make learning more competency-based by building links between the classroom and the "real world." "The students in Junior Achievement are engaged by having mentors and people from the community talking about business," said Battle River School Division communications officer Diane Hutchinson. "They are able to draw a link between what they are doing in school and what they hope to do afterwards." The Junior Achievement program had been dormant in Battle River School Division schools for 25 years before being started again at Sedgewick High School in 2012.

Cargill breaks ground for new canola crushing facility east of city By Dan Jensen

Cargill is continuing to work with general contractors to develop an actual cost for the plant and is hoping to receive a full environmental permit from the provincial government sometime in July. Cargill's new plant is expected to have the capacity to process 3,500 tonnes per day of canola seed. "The initial crush volume

is expected to be approximately 850,000 tonnes," states a Cargill project summary. "The finished products will include approximately 1,500 tonnes per day of food grade canola oil and 2,000 tonnes per day of canola meal animal feed." Cargill believes the construction of the facility will generate 800,000 man hours of employment. The operation and maintenance is expected to require approximately 50 full-time staff.

Kamifurano leaders, students to pay visit By Murray Green

The City of Camrose will be hosting a delegation from its sister city, the town of Kamifurano, Japan, on July 26 to 28. The Camrose/Japan Friendship Society, headed by president Michiko Rasmussen, helps the city host representatives from its sister city every three years. "Kamifurano has a new superintendent of schools, so he is excited to visit Camrose. He is only in the position for a month," explained Michiko. "There will be 11 students and five leaders. In Japan, they have the mayor, superintendent of schools and then chairman of the council as the three most important positions with the government." The group will be visiting city hall (Mirror Lake Centre), museum, Battle River School Division, and will make a trip to the Rocky Mountains. "Three years ago the delegation visited Charlie Killam School. This time it is during the summer holidays," said Michiko. In Japan, they have school throughout the year. "Most of the students coming over are junior high age. Some will be from high school. We can't send junior high students to Japan, so it looks one-sided. I told them they don't have to send students, but they have the budget for it, so they keep coming," added Michiko. Camrose hosted one person from Kamifurano as an employee about 20 years ago. "The person spent half time with the city learning about government and half time at the Camrose Composite High School teaching Japanese as a second language," added Michiko. The students will likely be staying in the Charlie Killam School if approved by the Battle River School Division. Principal Thomas Midbo is currently finalizing those arrangements. "We might set up some tents on the grounds for the students to stay in, or if

we have bad weather we could go into the gym," said Mr. Midbo. "The problem is that people are too busy in the summer for us to have billets for the students. The camping might be a very good experience for them. We have showers and facilities in the gym area." Without school in session the society will be searching for groups to help with the cultural exchange. "I'm going to contact some church youth groups to have some activities and maybe a barbecue," added Mr. Midbo. The adults will be staying at the Camrose Resort Casino Best Western. I will be meeting with Michiko next week to finalize some of these things." The guests will arrive Friday afternoon at the international airport and will charter a bus to Camrose. "That's when we bring the students together for a meal, likely a barbecue. On Saturday, the Japanese students will be touring downtown Camrose, including a visit to the Bailey Theatre, before going to West Edmonton Mall," added Mr. Midbo. The Japanese students could experience the water park, Galaxyland Park and shopping. "If we don't have host families, then we will fill in with a theatre night, games or other activities." On Sunday, July 28, a breakfast is planned for the visitors. Some of the activities and tours include the Camrose Railway Museum, Camrose Centennial Museum, lunch at Mirror Lake's Kamifurano Park, tour of a Camrose Police Service, Camrose Fire Department and the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus tour. The tours are tentative at this point, but will likely happen as time permits. A welcoming reception will be held at the Camrose Resort Casino on July 28 at 6 p.m. On Monday, the Japan delegation will leave for Banff and a trip to see the mountains and national park prior to heading home.

City prepared to offer assistance to flooded communities By Dan Jensen

The City of Camrose is waiting for a call from Alberta Emergency Management on how it can assist communities affected by the flooding in the southern part of the province. "We, like a lot of communities, are ready to assist however

we can with the resources that we have just like we did with the fire disaster at Slave Lake," said Camrose mayor Marshall Chalmers. "There is obviously provincial coordination going on and we stand at the ready. "We are just waiting to hear

what it is they need, if anything, from the City. Mayor Chalmers said he hasn't spoken directly with any of the mayors in southern Alberta. "Those guys are too busy to speak with a mayor sitting in central Alberta who doesn't have those particular pressing

problems. They know with all the tweets and everything else going out electronically that we are pulling for them and we will jump in and help whenever we need to." City council approved the deployment of four qualified public works staff to Slave Lake to

help that town rebuild its infrastructure after devastating fires that destroyed approximately 400 homes, several businesses and some civic facilities. The staff was selected by the Town of Slave Lake to work on a rotational basis, each for a maximum of five days.

Cindy Charpentier lobbies for lung disease drug By Murray Green

Bawlf resident Cindy Charpentier suffers from a rare, progressive and fatal lung disease called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), which has no known cause. In 2008, Cindy discovered she had trouble breathing. "I easily became short of breath. Just going for a walk played me out. I started going to a doctor to see what was wrong," explained Cindy. "I just kept coughing and coughing. Eventually, I was referred to a specialist." Cindy has seen several doctors and specialists to determine her illness, but only expensive medicine can help her live a full life. The medical costs are too expensive for her to start taking. She has contacted her MLA Doug Griffiths to get the medicine covered by health care. Even if it is eventually covered, Cindy worried it may be too late for her. The Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation indicates that IPF is characterized by scarring of the lungs, which hinders a patientâ€™s ability to breathe. Over time, lung scarring and symptoms increase in severity, and patients only live from two to five years from when they are diagnosed. "I'm already approaching five years, so the sooner I can go on this medicine, the better," said 55-year-old Cindy, who moved from Camrose to Bawlf to save on living costs. Cindy was diagnosed with IPF just last year, but after originally undergoing three years of various testing for breathing difficulties. "At first the doctors were not sure what was causing the breathing problem. I did smoke and was overweight, but it was more than that," added Cindy. "The specialist thought maybe it was environmental and suggested that I should move. I thought maybe it was mold, asbestos, or something because I just moved into a new place not long before. It had a lot of stairs, which became a chore to do." Cindy's bedroom was downstairs and once she was upstairs, she was there for the day. "My eyes would be puffy every morning. I was told that someone had exotic chickens in there, so I thought maybe a move was the answer. I even bought myself a $3,000 vacuum cleaner and kept vacuuming. However, moving didn't change anything." Prior to her diagnosis, Cindy was an active member in the community and worked as a caregiver for patients with developmental disabilities with the Camrose Association for Community Living. "I had to stop working a year ago because it came to a point where they were helping me more than I was helping the patients,"

explained Cindy. "That was tough because I loved my job." Not only was Cindy a caregiver by profession, but she also provides support to her family on a daily basis, and is driven by the love and care of her children, grandchildren and soon to be great-grandchild. "Every summer I would go out to my sister's place and set up a tent and go swimming in the dugout, but I can't do those things anymore. Having all that taken away is hard," said a tearful Cindy. "Losing my independence is the hardest part." When Cindy's oxygen levels reached a quarter of what they should be, she went to the hospital. "I think I almost gave the staff heart attacks when they saw my low levels," she added. "I had to stay in the hospital for 28 days. I've learned more in the last couple of months than I have in the last four years. That's when I found out about Esbriet." Until recently, Canadians diagnosed with this devastating disease had no proven treatment options available. However, last fall Esbriet (pirfenidone) was approved by Health Canada for patients that suffered from mild to moderate forms of IPF. "This was great news for me because the drug slows down the deterioration of lungs," said Cindy. Despite the severity of the

disease and the absence of other treatment options, the Canadian Expert Drug Committee through the Common Drug Review (CDR) recommended that public drug programs keep Esbriet (pirfenidone) out of reach for most IPF patients who are in dire need of the new treatment. The double-edged sword is frustrating for Cindy. "I can't afford Esbriet because I'm unable to work due to IPF," she said. Cindy depends solely on publiclyfunded health benefits through the AISH program. She has no private insurance or other means to cover the costs of the drug. "I first talked to MLA Verlyn Olson's office, but when I moved to Bawlf to reduce my living costs, I found out that I was in MLA Doug Griffiths' area. I want to meet with him to express the urgent need for access to treatment." MLA Griffiths has been very busy with the southern Alberta flooding situation. "I received a letter from AISH that if the drug helped me, they would re-examine if they would cover the cost of the drug. But, I can't afford it in the first place." Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a debilitating and fatal disease, characterized predominantly by fibrosis (scarring) of the lungs with a small component of inflammation (swell-

ing). IPF hinders the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the lungs. It is a progressive disease such that over time, lung scarring leads to progressive restriction in breathing and patients die from respiratory failure. Some patients experience sudden flare up and often die within weeks. IPF has a higher mortality than many other malignancies, including pancreatic, lung and liver cancers. Canadians affected by IPF in a mild to moderate range is estimated to be between 3,000 to 5,000. It is more common in men than women and is usually diagnosed between the ages of 40 and 80 years. "About 3,000 people die every year and every day I'm that much closer to dying. But, I'm not ready for that just yet," said Cindy, trying to stay positive. "I encourage people to get to the bottom of it if they experience breathing problems. I encourage people to donate organs to help other people. We should be helping others as much as we can. To me, that way a little of you gets to live on. If they need my body to do further testing, then that's alright too. But, I want to be here for a long time." The two main symptoms of IPF are breathlessness (also known as dyspnea) and a dry hacking cough. Day-to-day

activities such as showering, climbing stairs, getting dressed and eating are a huge undertaking for Cindy. She is kept immobile by two hoses from her nose to oxygen machines. Cindy went through Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) to diagnose IPF and it involved a series of breathing tests that measure the lungsâ€™ airflow, the volume of air in the lungs and the ability of lungs to extract oxygen from the air. Esbriet (pirfenidone) is the first and only medication indicated for use in Canada for the treatment of adults with mild to moderate idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. It is an oral tablet with systemic anti-fibrotic and anti-inflammatory properties and has been shown to slow the progression of scarring (fibrosis). It has shown to be effective in decreasing decline in lung function, slowing the progression of the disease and preserving exercise tolerance. Esbriet remains out of reach for many patients who no longer have private coverage and rely strictly on government funding for access to this potentially lifeextending treatment. Cindy's other option is a double lung transplant. "I wanted to put my name on the list for transplants," she added. "I was told to lose weight before I could be accepted. Ironically, one of the side effects of Esbriet is losing weight," she said with a chuckle. "I'm trying to lose weight, and have lost 90 pounds altogether, but it's tough when you can't exercise. I have excess skin, which could lose me another 30 pounds. My heart is super strong, so I'm a good candidate for transplants otherwise." Esbriet costs about $3,500 a month for most patients. "That is a lot of money for someone who is no longer able to work," she continued. "I need to be on the medication to lose more weight to be able have the transplants. The drug also helps to tolerate exercise more. Now we finally have something to fight it, but most people can't afford it." Stress is harmful to lung disease. "When you can't breath, it is pretty stressful. When I feel better I like to crank the tunes. I find singing helps. But when you are not feeling good, or out of breath, singing becomes difficult as well," said Cindy. One doctor suggested that Cindy should just give up. "I am going to prove them wrong. That made me angry. I was asked how hard they should attempt to revive me if I should go into coma. I said with everything you have got. I'm not ready to go yet. I've got more life to live. I believe that I can beat this," added Cindy. "I just need to be given a chance."

Cargill provides flood relief Cargill, its Canadian businesses and employees are donating funds for relief efforts aimed at helping victims of recent severe flooding to High River, Alberta, and surrounding communities. Every time I have been on my bike on Camrose trails in the past few weeks – admittedly, this has not been every day, thanks

to the rain! – I have come across at least one dog whose owner has decided it is okay for them not to be on a leash while on the shared trails. I ask ALL dog owners to please reconsider your one little episode of rule-breaking. Yes, your dog may be very well behaved, but: 1) I cannot know that, and may have to slow down drastically just before needing some momentum to get up a hill (or when I simply do not want to slow my pace). 2) Your dog can be (and many have been) surprised when I come from down wind and around a corner. 3) Even well-behaved dogs can be standing or moving in the

wrong place, and you have much more control over the situation if you are staying to the right of the trail and have your pet on a lead. 4) Dogs far from their owners are even more unpredictable – if your pet loves to run, take it to the off-leash area. I love my morning rides, and find so many people polite and friendly as we pass each other. I make every effort to use my bell, stay to the right of the trail and consider others when I might be coming around a bend or down a hill. I ask our Camrose dog owners to do the same, and stick to leashing their pets when on our shared trails. With thanks Joy-Anne Murphy, Camrose

One candidate for Mayor Interest in this fall’s municipal elections is growing, especially in Camrose. It was sparked by the announcement that the sitting mayor, for health reasons, will not be running again. This was followed quickly by news that former mayor from 1989 to 2004, Norman Mayer, will again seek the mayor’s chair. Electors now are wondering who challengers might be. At the present time, it also seems probable that some sitting councillors may not seek re-election, which also helps to stimulate interest in civic elections. Municipal elections will be held in counties and in all villages and towns therein. At the same time, elections for school board trustees will occur. With the rights of citizenship goes the responsibility to vote in civic elections – and to be knowledgeable about public affairs. It is important that eligible voters prepare for these significant elections – significant because every decision made by the people we elect will affect us directly through the taxes we pay and the services that are rendered. Battle River School Division is to be commended for holding an information session for prospective candidates for school board trustee positions. The attendees heard the president of the Alberta School Boards Association, Jacquie Hansen, describe the roles, responsibilities, rewards and challenges that come with serving as a trustee. It would be helpful if the general public also attended such a meeting so that everyone has a better understanding of the board’s responsibilities and challenges, and the parameters of its limited power. It would be most helpful if information sessions were also held for prospective municipal councillors. It would avoid the possible election of persons who thought a councillor’s work consisted of attending two regular council meetings a month. The fact is that councillors also sit on several other committees which also have meetings and duties, plus there is a sheaf of reports to review in preparation for every regular meeting. In spite of the duties borne by councillors, it is also rewarding to serve the community in a position that has more clout than does the average citizen. The more aware citizens are of the time involved in being an effective councillor, the more they will appreciate their efforts – perhaps realize, too, that it is impossible to please everyone because different people clamour for different things. The time between now and nomination day (the third Monday in September) will slip by quickly. May all eligible voters play a part in the election process – a right for which our ancestors fought hard win. There are several ways in which to participate: consider running for the office of mayor, councillor or school board trustee yourself; encourage someone else to do so; encourage a sitting member to seek re-election; become actively involved in supporting candidates of your choice; do whatever possible to stimulate public interest in public affairs; and encourage eligible voters to exercise their franchise rights.

Alberta School Board president pays a visit to Battle River Alberta School Boards Association President Jacquie Hansen hosted an information session in the heart of Battle River School Division on June 20, sharing tips and insights for anyone interested in running as a candidate in the next election. Ms. Hansen, accompanied by ASBA Legal Counsel Grace Cooke, spoke about the importance of the role of a trustee, and some of the challenges the job can bring. Alberta Education’s Inspiring Education focus has two reasons why it’s a great time to get involved in a school board. “Education is moving fast,” she said. “If you love community service and you love kids, there are going to be a lot of interesting things to do in the next few years.” Ms. Hansen spoke about Inspiring Education as being a

philosophy that will help move the education world into the 21st century. “There’s a lot of visioning and planning to do. School Boards should be looking five, 10, 15 and more years down the road and asking questions about how we prepare our children for jobs that don’t yet exist.” Ms. Hansen also spoke to the many rewarding aspects of being a trustee, such as attending school celebrations, meeting both students and staff, and playing a role in shaping the future. However, she also acknowledged that there can be a downside to the job. “One of the toughest things for trustees,” said Ms. Hansen, “is to remove themselves from their own community scenario and focus on the greater good. Trustees must be able to think about all students, not just

those from any one school or community. ” Ms. Cooke, a lawyer who works with school boards throughout the province, spoke to the fiduciary, confidentiality and governance roles that are key components of being an elected representative. Municipal elections are scheduled to take place in the fall of 2013. Nomination Day is Monday, September 23, and the election is Monday, October 21. Anyone interested in learning more about becoming a school board trustee can find information on the Alberta School Boards Association website www.asba.ab.ca. Ms. Hansen will be offering another information session in Battle River School Division on the evening of Monday, September 16. 2014 Silverado Strong, smart and capable

The 2014 Silverado 1500 has arrived at McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC. New from hood to hitch, the 2014 Silverado is engineered to be the strongest, smartest and most capable Silverado ever. "It's one of the most refined and best engineered pickups in the market – perfect for meeting the day to day challenges of earning a living, running a business and taking care of families," said McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC dealer principal Will McClellan. Major Silverado updates for 2014 include a trio of powerful, efficient EcoTec 3 engines, a stronger, quieter more comfortable cab, revised steering, suspension and brakes, ingenious solutions for managing cargo in the bed, and true truck capability for towing and hauling. Family of engines

Silverado's EcoTec3 engines feature state-ofthe-art technologies – direct injection, cylinder deactivation and continuously variable valve timing – to make the most of power, torque and efficiency across a broad range of operating conditions. "They have all the power and torque needed to handle the tough jobs and they seamlessly switch to four-cylinder mode to increase efficiency during light-load driving," said McClellan. The 4.3 litre V6 is SAE certified at 285 horsepower (212 kW) and 305 lb.-ft. of torque (413 Nm), the most torque of any standard V-6. The 5.3 V-8 is SAE certified at 355 horsepower (250 Kw) and 383 lb.-ft. of torque (519 Kw). With estimated fuel economy of 10.23 litres per 100 km on the highway (2WD), it offers the best fuel economy of any V-8 pickup. The 6.2 litre V-8 is the most capable engine offered in any light duty pickup truck. The EcoTec3 engines use direct fuel injection, which precisely metres fuel directly into the cylinders to optimize combustion over a broad range of

conditions. They also feature a new cylinder head design and a new sculpted piston to optimize the mixing of air and fuel in the engine and the burning of the mixture to create power. The oiling system incorporates a new variabledisplacement oil pump that enables a more efficient oil delivery based on the engine's operating conditions. All three engines feature a six-speed automatic transmission with gear ratios and shift schedules optimized for performance and efficiency. The transmissions feature Auto Grade Braking, which downshifts on downgrades to help reduce brake wear. The suspension, steering and brakes have been extensively updated for a quieter, more refined ride and confident handling and braking. The rear suspension continues to use two-stage multi-leaf springs for an optimal balance between a smooth ride and load-carrying capability. Interiors

The all new interiors of the 2014 Silverado 1500 emphasize form and function. "Silverado engineers sought to craft an interior that was quieter, roomier, more comfortable and more functional without making it look like the interior of a crossover," said McClellan. The upright instrument panel with its sixgauge cluster is tailored specifically to the needs of truck customers, and most models also include a colour Driver Information Centre displaying driver and infotainment data. Controls were located with the use of reach curves, and important controls were placed closest to the driver and grouped functionally. Knobs, buttons and interfaces are large, easy to read and easy to operate, even while wearing gloves. Silverado's available MyLink information system is designed to be easy-to-use, highly customizable and capable of linking up to 10 devices. It features natural language voice recognition that

allows users to place calls, enter destinations, browse media, Pete Pastuck play music and control other functions simply by telling the vehicle what to do. "There are no key phrases to remember and no need to look at a screen," said McClellan. MyLink can also be operated via large, clearly labelled knobs, through integrated steering controls, or through the touch screen. A new high-wear seat cloth that is more durable and easier to clean is available and the front seats have more durable dual-density for improved comfort and longer life. Stronger

To ensure the new Silverado is up to the challenge, key elements of the updated frame, including the main rails and major cross members, are made from high-strength steel and hydroforming is used to improve strength and reduce mass of the front of the frame. The cab structures are all new, and incorporate high-strength steel in the A-pillars, B-pillars, roof rails and rocker panels. Ultra-high-strength steel is used in areas of the rocker panels and underbody in anticipation of new shallow-offset crash tests. In all, about two-thirds of the cab structure is made from high-strength steels, for a quieter ride, a more confident feel and enhanced performance on tougher government and industry crash tests. An internal torsion bar reduces the effort to raise and lower the tailgate, while a rotary damper allows for a controlled and more gradual lowering motion. Silverado continues to offer a comprehensive suite of standard safety features, including StabiliTrak, electronic stability control with trailer sway control and hill start assist, head curtain airbags with rollover protection, and OnStar.

People help flood victims By Murray Green Radio station CFCW held a Red Cross Canada Day on June 26 to assist people in southern Alberta and the flood victims. Many people in the Calgary, High River and Canmore regions were forced to leave their homes as the water overflowed the river banks and onto the streets during the extremely wet month, especially on June 22. Central Agencies donated $5,000 and Camrose Registries added $2,000 to the Red Cross relief efforts. Supplies Everyone can help by donating supplies to the thousands of people who were forced to leave

their homes. The Ramada Inn has agreed to be a drop-off spot for supplies to those who lost all of their household items. "If there are any people or businesses that can't drop off items, myself, or one of my staff, can definitely pick it up," said manager Lisa Soch. Call Lisa at 780-672-5220 for more information. Hearts Duggan Cinemas started selling hearts at the box office to show support. You can purchase a heart for $2 and all proceeds go to purchasing supplies for those in need. Grade 8 trio wins junior high film festival By Murray Green

Eight groups of students in Grades 8 and 9 competed in a Charlie Killam School film festival to encourage drama and English language arts classes participants to be creative. Teacher Jon Lindstrand allowed students to form their own groups, usually consisting of three students, to make a film. Students from the entire school were allowed to vote for their favourite short film. In total, 300 votes were cast. "All of the films were good, but three of them received high praise and were very close in the voting," said Mr. Lindstrand. "To have a group of Grade 8 girls win the film festival shows the amount of talent we have here. I’m really looking forward to working with this year’s Grades 7 and 8 talent next year and I hope our Grade 9s continue to create quality projects, such as the ones we saw in this festival, next year in high school." The winners of the In the Can: CKS Film of the Year award went to Jessica de Hoog, Megan Olsen and Shavonne Voytechek for their version of a silent film classic of a damsel in distress. "The films were to be drama or mockumentaries," explained Jessica. The eight films included three mockumentaries, four silent films and a project based on Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-tale Heart" from English students. "We wanted to do an old western silent film because we thought that would be a good idea," said Megan. "We had a main idea of us (Shavone and I) playing the guys trying to win over Jessica." "We planned it out in drama class and then went to Megan's to film," said Shavonne. "I play a guy that proposes to Jessica, but she breaks up with me instead. She dates another guy (Shavonne) who takes her away from me," added Megan. Megan's character becomes jealous when he realizes that Jessica has fallen for someone else and seeks revenge by trying to kill her by tying her to the tracks. A huge CN train is barrelling down the tracks and headed right for Jessica when Shavonne's character arrives just in time to save her. We are led to believe the couple lives happily ever after and the production became a hit at the school. Jessica used a dance outfit and the other two characters dressed in western attire for the film. "We wanted to have fun with the film," agreed all three of the drama students. "We watched some Charlie Chaplin movies to receive some inspiration," said Megan. After watching their classmates' films, the trio felt they were in tough competition with some good productions. "I think our costumes and acting were the best," said Megan, on reasoning why they were voted the best film. "We took a lot of time editing the video and our setting was good," added Jessica. ""It was exciting to win because it was the first time doing a project like this," said Shavonne. "It was a lot of hard work and nerve-wracking, so it was nice to win."

Camrose resident Alan Ford will be riding his bike in support of the Camrose Family Literacy Program's Books for Babies and Read to Me Story Bags programs in the 2013 Tour de l'Alberta on Sunday, June 21. Ford has used the Tour de l'Alberta to raise funds for Camrose family literacy the last two years. "I have a goal of raising $2,500," said Ford, "and would be thrilled if, after this ride, Camrose Family Literacy had funding for three sets of Books for Babies programs and 100 read to me story bags to distribute. "With limited targeted funding from the Family Literacy Initiative Fund, community support is necessary to reach as many infants and preschoolers as possible." Books for Babies is a fourweek program which encourages parents to share books with their babies on a daily basis. The program introduces parents to various ways they can support their child's early literacy and language experiences and, in doing so, helps promote healthy family relationships. Read to Me Story Bags provides new parents with important literacy information and baby's first book. The bags are distributed by public health nurses at the four month home visit." Program costs are about $80 per participant for the Books for Babies program and $10 per Read to Me Story Bag. The Books for Babies and Read To Me Story Bags programs have received excellent response from participants. "It was awesome," said one parent. "I learned lots of activities, songs and rhymes to share with my baby." "The program helped me learn how to interact with my child and reminded me of old nursery rhymes and songs," said another. "It made me feel more confident in raising my child." The Tour de l'Alberta is an annual event organized by the Edmonton Bicycle and Touring Club that involves approximately 1,000 bikers who cycle a distance of 100 km, passing through the communities of Morinville, Alcomdale, Gibbons and Bon Accord. The event is billed as a local version of the Tour de France, as it is held the same day that the Tour de France ends. The amount of time it takes most bikers to cover the 100 km is between three and a half and five hours. "It all depends on the conditions," said Ford. "The road for the 2012 event was a little congested at times because of the number of cyclists but we started early enough in the morning that we didn't have to fight with the vehicles." Geo locators help track location of purple martins By Murray Green

Purple martin birds rarely take a day off. That was proven by Dr. Glen Hvenegaard, professor of geography and environmental science, University of Alberta, Augustana Campus, at the Purple Martin Festival on Sunday, June 23. Last summer, the Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society banded 51 birds from the Camrose area and the Ellis Bird Farm near Lacombe to track the flight patterns of the local purple martins. "We used data collected from the geo-locaters that are like little backpacks for the birds. It gives us an understanding of their migration patterns and what they do the other eight months of the year," said Dr. Hvenegaard. Purple martins respond quickly to the efforts by the local bird enthusiasts. "We can put up a house and within a year or two it will attract several pairs of martins. It is really gratifying to be able to take action and see a response quickly with these martins," said Dr. Hvenegaard. He explained that the reduction of some birds means that birds such as purple martins need help in restoring numbers. "This is the reason we need more help with citizen participation and bird sites. It is not just a project to have pretty birds in your backyard, but to help birds that are in serious decline," added Dr. Hvenegaard. "Some species of birds are declining one or two per cent each year. At that rate it doesn't take long to make an impact. However, we are experiencing a recovery in our area because of your work." Some of the factors for declining bird numbers are the use of pesticides in agriculture and the reduced amount of shorelines. "Migratory birds place themselves in a higher degree of risk because of that incredible journey that they make, so it's no surprise the return rate is perhaps only 50 per cent," Dr. Hvenegaard said.

"If we understand more about that journey we may be able to assist them along the way." The birds have a short window of breeding in Alberta. "Purple martins arrive in late April and leave in early August, so that is about three months. They are not with us for a long period. That leaves us to question what they do in the other nine months," said Dr. Hvenegaard. "We wanted to learn more about where they go in the fall, where they winter and

find out the migration pattern. Up to now all we had were observations." Most people realized that Alberta has purple martins and Brazil has purple martins. Now we know they are the same birds. "When a new technology came forward to band the birds, it gave us a sense and a small sampling of where they were going," said Dr. Hvenegaard. "Purple martins are large enough to carry the new geo-locators that weigh 1.1 grams

or two per cent of their weight. The geo-locaters can determine the number of sun hours from sunrise to sunset to figure out the location of the birds." Problems with the process is the high cost of the geolocaters at $200 and the low retrieval rate. "If we use the rate that only half of the birds return, it makes it expensive. Then it takes a lot of time to find a bird with the geo-locators in Camrose," he added. Dr. Kevin Fraser of York University in Toronto helped install the geo-locators on the local martins and receive a grant to study the migration. Data retrieved from a returning female bird suggest purple martins have extensive migration paths and predictable habits. This Camrose bird had a long migration route of a total round trip of over 22,000 kilometres. This instrument, developed by York University, revealed daily movements of the bird. One of the first returning backpacking martin was a bird that had been caught, banded and outfitted at the Ellis Bird Farm after spending our winter months in the Amazon rain forest in the state of Para, Brazil. "We found a right-banded bird in Camrose. Ida, named after Allen Hayes' wife Ida, was found at the Hayes farm. The bird left Aug. 4 and flew south to the border between Minnesota and Iowa. After a three-week layover, it headed south and took the land route to Mexico to the Yucatan Peninsula," informed Dr. Hvenegaard. "It stayed for 33 days to recover and the area has good food sources. It then settled in three winter roosts in the Amazon rain forest area." On April 29, the bird started heading north in an almost non-stop route to arrive here on May 16. "It stopped for a couple of days in Guatemala for a little rest. The bird averaged almost 800 kilometres a day in 15 days,

which is incredible. Most of us can't drive 800 km a day," he said, comparing the flight with holiday travel. "These birds are amazing. That is only assuming they go straight north and south. We all know they fly around as well." Dr. Fraser was able to band the same bird two years in a row. "He discovered that the bird had almost the exact same flight pattern and migration time. If they always have the same patterns, he decided to research how climate change will impact them. They don't like to change and that raises some concerns," Dr. Hvenegaard said. "We can uncover all sorts of information now. We are just opening the door. We need more geo-locaters to gather more information," he concluded. Dr. Fraser from York University will be here from July 6 to 8 to help a local crew put geolocators on more purple martins around Camrose. "This is part of a fascinating study that is revealing amazing information about the migratory travels of these birds. Our Alberta birds travel farther and have longer wings than other populations of martins in North America. It's also a lot of fun to work with birds up close," said Dr. Hvenegaard. "If you want to help catch birds, watch the banding, release birds, take pictures, or take steps to obtaining your own banding permit, feel free to stop by for a quick visit or stay the whole day, or three. We'd love to have some extra hands to help band and put geo-locators on about 37 birds. We'll be doing all of this July 6 (starting about noon) to July 8 (afternoon) mostly in and around Camrose." Camrose Police Service lays charges of break and enter and theft June 28

As a result of an ongoing criminal investigation where condominium apartment complexes had been broken into and property stolen from vehicles in their parkades, police located and arrested the two individuals who were responsible. A 28year-old man and a 29-year-old lady were charged with break and enter committing theft, possession of stolen property, identity theft/fraud, breach of court order, and possession of meth. The lady also had outstanding warrants for her arrest from St. Albert RCMP detachment for property crime offences. Both individuals had bail hearings before a presiding justice of the peace and were remanded into custody to appear before the court. A homeowner in the area of 50 Avenue and 54 Street reported unknown person(s) entered their garage and stole an assortment of tools consisting of: a Black and Decker side grinder, two Wagner cordless drills, and two Bosch impact drills. Police received a report of a theft from an unlocked parked motor vehicle in the area of 54

Avenue and 52A Street. The initial investigation determined the truck had been left unsecured and unknown person(s) entered the truck box which was enclosed by a canopy and stole a red in colour Craftsman tool box which contained a Reese Multi Hitch and a first aid kit. June 27

A man called police stating his girlfriend was intoxicated and causing problems requiring police assistance. Police attended the home and determined no offence(s) were alleged to have been committed and the situation was resolved by transporting the 32-year-old lady to a hotel at her request. A short time later the man called police again to advise she had returned to his home. Police re-attended the residence and subsequently arrested the intoxicated lady for prevention of breach of peace and detained her in custody until sober. Police received a call of suspicious persons hanging around a local hotel. Upon arrival, police observed three people at the front entrance one of which started to run away upon seeing the police. The male, a 19-year-

old who was known to police, was apprehended after a short foot pursuit. A second male and a female were located within the hotel a short time later and the 17-year-old male was found to be in possession of a large quantity of cocaine, a small quantity of cannabis marihuana and over $1,000 cash from the proceeds of crime. The 17-year-old male was arrested and charged with: possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine; possession proceeds of crime: possession of cannabis marihuana. As a result of the investigation, a 19-year-old Camrose man was charged with the following offences: possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine; possession of meth; possession of a weapon dangerous to the public (bear spray); obstructing a peace officer; resisting arrest; and breach of release conditions. In addition, the man had two outstanding warrants for drug and criminal charges. The 17-year-old was released on cash bail to appear before the court. June 26

The owner of a parked

motor vehicle reported unknown person(s) entered his unlocked van sometime overnight and stole his wallet and contents. The theft occurred in the area of 47 Street and 48 Avenue. Police received a complaint from a lady alleging she has received threatening phone calls from a man pertaining to a past business transaction in which both parties are in disagreement. Police contacted and spoke to the 39-year-old man regarding the complaint. Both involved parties were advised to cease contact with one another and provided advice regarding the disputed business transaction. Several 9-1-1 calls were received regarding a truck / trailer rollover on Highway 13 in the area of 73 Street. Police, EMS, and Firefighters were dispatched to the scene. An initial investigation into the single vehicle collision determined the driver of the truck / trailer unit was travelling east on Highway 13 entering the City of Camrose. An unidentified driver of a green in colour minivan travelling on Highway 13 is alleged to have travelled across the centre

line and into the path of travel of the truck / trailer unit. The driver of the truck / trailer unit swerved to the right to avoid a collision with the oncoming minivan and upon doing so lost control of the vehicle resulting in the single vehicle rollover collision. The driver of the truck / trailer unit and passengers were not injured. Police are seeking the publicâ€™s assistance in identifying the green in colour minivan; anyone with information regarding the involved minivan or its driver is asked to contact police. At 12:13 a.m. police stopped and checked a motorist for a traffic safety act violation. Upon talking with the driver, Police detected an odour of cannabis marihuana emanating from the interior of the vehicle. The driver and passenger of the vehicle were arrested and detained on scene. A search located a small quantity of cannabis marihuana which was seized. The 18-yearold male passenger was charged with unlawful possession of marihuana and the 19-year-old male driver was charged with operating a motor vehicle while using a cell phone.

Music on Main Street By Dan Jensen

A new season of Music on Main is about to get underway. The annual City Center Camrose summertime promotion will feature six bands that will fill downtown with live music every Thursday evening starting July 4 and continuing to August 22, with the exception of August 1, which is the date of the Big Valley Jamboree kick-off party. "We feel we have put together a pretty good lineup," said coorganizer Curtis Bessette, from Martha's Music. Music on Main has consistently brought out music loving crowds that are responsive in their enjoyment in the music to the point of dancing in the streets. "It is a community event that is of benefit to everyone, including the downtown merchants which provide the sponsorship," said Bessette. First up this Thursday is the The Bloozhounds, a three-member band from Camrose which plays an assortment of Chicago Muddy Waters and Texas Stevie Ray Vaughn blues. "This is the third year The Bloozhounds have performed at Music on Main," said Bessette. "They love the community and are happy to be loved by the community as well." The Bloozhounds perform in Camrose and surrounding areas about once a month. Second up on July 11 is the Norton Metcalfe Trio, which will be performing classic country music with good old time values. The July 18 Music on Main will feature The Family Dreams, an indie, blues and folk

infused rock band that includes Jordan Leden on guitar and vox, Terry Prokopchuk on guitar and vox, John McCune on bass and Nathan Labrecque on drums. The band was formed in July, 2011, and recorded a debut EP, which is now available on iTunes. "The band derives its unique and vintage sound from a wide variety of musical sources such as Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, Neil Young and Bob Dylan just to name a few," states band produced promotional material. "The Family Dreams offer a wellrounded set which includes both cover songs and original material suitable for any venue setting." The Myra Marshall Blues Band, consisting of Robert Renman on guitar, Brandon Kroeger on drums, Myra Marshall on vocals and John McCune will be returning to Music on Main July 25. "Myra Marshall has always been a Camrose favourite," said Bessette. "She was mentored by the late Thom Goetz and had an album under her repertoire by the time she was 20." Originally competing and learning from various vocal competitions throughout Alberta as well as music festival categories ranging from movie, TV, pop, musical theatre, classical and contemporary ballad, Marshall excelled at a rapid rate. When first exploring the stage she performed as a solo country artist and formed a female duo with a friend singing contemporary Christian music. In 2001 she expanded her previous style when asked to front end Edmonton blues band after being seen at

After singing with this band for some time she freelanced for a couple of bands in Camrose and later formed her own band, gaining more experience and playing a variety of venues such as ball tournament dances, night clubs, weddings, outdoor parties and street fairs. The Prairie Cats will take to the stage August 8 to perform gritty, rocky, shooting from the hip raw country music, along with a slice of rockabilly. "They are top notch musicians and a treat for the whole family and fellow musicians alike," said Bessette. The 2013 Music on Main will end on a traditional note with a performance by Panache, a big band brass group made up of music teachers/professionals from Camrose and area. "They play popular tunes from the twenties, thirties and forties," said Bessette. "They have closed Music on Main for the last four years." Music for Main performances will start at 7 and end at 9 p.m., with short breaks that will allow those attending to look through local stores or enjoy a meal at a restaurant. "We encourage people to bring their lawn chairs so they can have a front row seat for the show," said Bessette.

Eva Louise Potter

Edward “Zeb” Brewer Ed (Zeb) Brewer was carried into eternal life and peace on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at the age of 84 years. Zeb was born on May 8, 1929 in Wildwood AB, eighth child of nine children, to Robert and Anna Brewer. He attended school until Grade 7, and then went to work at several jobs. He worked as a hired farm hand, at a saw mill and digging trenches. It was while working for a seismic company that Zeb was brought to the Camrose area. His fellow workers gave him his nickname “Zeb” that stayed with him his whole life. The best thing about coming to Camrose was meeting the love of his life, a beautiful blonde lady, Lois Rosendahl. They were married on June 20, 1954. They welcomed their firstborn and only child, Ed on March 26, 1955. For the next four years, Zeb continued his education and apprenticeship until he received his mechanic’s license. The following years he worked at Central Garage, Crawford’s and George Wood Pontiac. For 10 years Zeb was in partnership at an Esso station that was located across the street from Liquidation World. From there Zeb bought the Texaco station, where Smitty’s is now located, and promptly named it Zeb’s Texaco. He worked there until his retirement in 1987. In 1990, at the age of 60 years, along with Lois, he decided to build a new home out on the old Rosendahl farmstead. There they were in their glory. Zeb loved to garden and always harvested a bumper crop every summer. He would start hundreds of flowers in his greenhouse that they planted in their yard. There was a rainbow of colors everywhere. Winter months were spent catching up on reading, watching hockey games and hibernating to get his strength back to start all over the following summer. Also, during his retirement years, he volunteered countless hours for Pedersen’s Florists making numerous flower deliveries and traveling with Paul to Edmonton every Tuesday morning to pick up flowers. Zeb’s three grandchildren, Shane, Jordan and Jayla were his pride and joy. At every opportunity he was teaching them a life lesson. His love and wisdom are a big part of who they are as adults today. Zeb had a strong relationship with the Lord and sat faithfully every Sunday in his favorite pew at church. We will miss his presence, deeply. Just over two years ago, Zeb lost three quarters of his heart when his sweetheart, Lois, passed away. He missed her dearly. She was waiting for him and now they are back together planting a rainbow of colors in Heaven. He will be lovingly remembered by his family, son Ed and daughter-inlaw Doreen, and grandchildren Shane and Woosun, Jordan and Martina, and Jayla as well as his special little angel and great-granddaughter Honor; his sister Marion and brother Walter (Winnie) and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held on Thursday, June 27, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. from Messiah Lutheran Church with Bev Swanson and David Eriksson officating. Interment took place in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. Eva Louise Potter of Camrose, formerly of Rosalind, passed away on Saturday June 22, 2013 at the age of 102 years. Eva Louise Potter was born December 19, 1910 at Edberg, Alberta, the third daughter of Harry and Clara Potter. In the fall of 1911 she moved with her parents to a farm near Rosalind, where she lived and worked on the farm until January 1964 when she and her mother moved to Camrose. Eva was instructed for Confirmation in the Christian Faith by Rev. Hoeffner at Rosalind and was baptized by Rev. Raedeke at Camrose. She was confirmed in August 1939. Eva’s eyesight started to fail in 1978 and Eva said “when you can’t drive you learn to walk.” And walk she did, many years, many miles. When Eva was 92 she moved from her own home to Bethany Care where she resided at Louise Jensen until her passing. It was Eva’s dream to live to be 100, to be the oldest of her relatives. She achieved this milestone and passed away June 22, 2013 at 102 years 6 months. She was predeceased by her parents; infant sister Mabel; brother Vernon “Bud” Potter; sisters Mae Berke, Ferne Twichell and Mildred Anderson Flemming. She is survived by her nieces, nephews, and many friends. A funeral service was held on Wednesday June 26, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. from the Grace Lutheran Church Camrose, with Pastor Greg Kjos officiating. Interment has taken place in the Melville Cemetery, Kelsey. Memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to Grace Lutheran Church or to a charity of one’s choice. Ronald Schiele Cantelon Ronald Schiele Cantelon of Meeting Creek passed away on Friday, June 21, 2013 at the age of 81 years. Ron was born on February 11, 1932 on the family farm at Meeting Creek, Alberta. He spent several years in the 1950s working as a seismic operator in the oil patch. He then returned to the family farm to raise pigs and cows. He met his wife to be, Eligia Lisondra (Leah) of Samboan in the Philippines, through a pen pal club. Ron sponsored Leah to come to Canada and they were married in the house, on the farm at Meeting Creek December 6, 1980. Leah and he enjoyed traveling to the U.S. (especially Topeka, Kansas), to Vancouver and Penticton to visit with relatives. Ron taught Leah to drive (in the words of Leah, a very gentle teacher) and on trips to Vancouver she would drive and he would be her reassuring navigator. Ron and Leah enjoyed flying to Topeka and Vancouver with faithful nephew Teddy supplying airport shuttle service. Ron had several years of poor health. He was lovingly cared for and attended to by his faithful wife Leah, and for seven years nephew Teddy came to the farm from Edmonton to assist with yard work. Ron was a Christian man who enjoyed spending time with Leah reading and studying God’s word. He passed away peacefully June 21, 2013 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose. He is survived by his loving wife Leah; brother Peter and sister Marion, both of Leduc; several nieces and nephews; special nephew Teddy of Edmonton and other extended family members. Ron was predeceased by his parents Dwight (Del) and Alpha of Meeting Creek; and two brothers Lionel of Kamloops and Leon of Pincher Creek. May cherished memories, of their life together, be a continuing comfort to Leah. A funeral service was held on Thursday, June 27, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. from the Bethel Lutheran Church (4102-73 Street, Camrose, AB) with Rev. Kristian Wold officiating. Muriel Arlene Gunderson Muriel Gunderson went to be with her Lord on Friday, June 21, 2013 at the Louise Jensen Long Term Care Centre in Camrose. Muriel was born on August 6, 1920 at their farm home twelve miles east of Camrose to Clara and Raymond Brager. She was baptized in Camrose and confirmed at the Parkland Lutheran Church. In 1946, Muriel married Conrad Gunderson. They resided on their farm five miles north of Bawlf until September 2001. They then moved into Deer Meadows in Camrose. In 2011, due to failing health Muriel was moved to Bethany Meadows Continuing Care. She is survived by her two children Corinne (Hank) Heykants and Darryl ( Judy) Gunderson; four grandchildren Les (Rebecca) Gunderson, Lisa (Patrick) Feng, Tracey (Rob) Ash, Shawn (Lori) Francoeur; eight great-grandchildren Jennifer, Stephanie, James, Courtney, Jayme, Jordan, Owen, and Ethan; and also her oldest brother Harley Brager of Red Deer. Muriel was predeceased by her husband Conrad; sister Lauretta; and brother Ronald. A funeral service was held on Thursday, June 27, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. from the Bawlf Lutheran Church with Rev. Dorothy Johnson Hagstrom Klippert The family regretfully announces the passing of our Mother, Grandmother, and GreatGrandmother, on Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at the Sherwood Park Care Centre at the age of 93. Dorothy enjoyed reading, knitting, sewing, handicrafts, and listening to southern gospel music. She had an incredible memory, always keeping track of current events and family happenings. In her final days Dorothy was surrounded by her loving family, though she was ready to be reunited with departed family and friends in Heaven. She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her children: Caroline Gilbert (Morris), Merle (Carolyn), Earl (Shirley), Elaine Thomas (Arvin), Bruce (Susan), Brian (Rosalie), Sheila Pierson (Arthur), Clarence (Tracy), Conrad (Kim), and Gordon (Wendy). She also leaves to cherish her memory 21 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by first husband, Clarence (1982); second husband, George (1996); her daughter, Janet (2006); and granddaughter, Tammy (1980). The family extends their heartfelt appreciation for the wonderful loving care Dorothy received at the Sherwood Park Care Centre. This is a celebration of life for Walter Tomaszewski, my Dad, who is mentioned in the following poem dedicated to Nelson Mandela. I wrote this poem in honour of Nelson Mandela, an esteemed and loved man, who gave so much of himself for so many. NOT WORTHY TO WALK IN YOUR SHADOW Many times, in my mind, I have written this prose, So now is the time to sit with computer at hand. Now is the time for this simple, Canadian prairie girl, To humbly write this prose, in honor, of a visionary and highly-esteemed man. Our worlds are so different, Mr. Mandela, For you live on a southern continent, and I, in the north. And although our hearts beat the same as the blood flows through our veins, Worlds apart, both in destiny and skin color, our so-different lives have gone forth. As a prairie girl I ran freely through trees with grain running through my fingers. Your life, starting the same year as my father’s, was greatly challenged. You struggled for freedom and dignity while you were young, While we chose our daily tasks with reckless abandon and took voting for granted. The date of my birth is that of your children; My father fed us by farming his land, working in steel mills, and digging for oil. He did not have to travel the land of his birth, in hiding, to fight racism and domination. Apartheid was not part of his world, nor part of his toil. The mention of your name brings admiration, respect and gladness in one’s heart; We are not worthy to walk in your shadow. We have not walked in the tired shoes of Freedom Fighters, And our understanding of the indignities under apartheid is embarrassingly low. I humbly struggle within myself to find the most touching words to express, What I am trying to share with you. For words cannot fully and compassionately articulate The love, admiration and respect so many billions of people have for you. From afar I touch your hands and face, Mr. Mandela, In admiration and love; Even though we are thousands of miles apart, I am so moved by all you have sacrificed, and for singing the song of the doves. The United Church that stood in Ohaton from 1920 to 2011 won't soon be forgotten. A plaque on the Ohaton bell tower that celebrates the contributions the church made to the hamlet and surrounding area during its time in operation was unveiled by former church trustees Gwen Sheets, Marvin Rhyason and Donald MacLeod June 26. Wording on the plaque is: Ohaton United Church, 1920 to 2011, located at MacArthur and Main Street, Ohaton, Alberta. "We felt that the plaque would be most visible on the bell tower," said Sheets. "If we had placed it on the church we wouldn't have been able to have much say on what would happen to it in the future." "Having it here will give the church the recognition it deserves." The United Church in Ohaton was a victim of dwindling funding and attendance. "There were only about five to ten people attending and the minister had left, so we felt that it was easier just to close the doors and put our energies into another church," said Sheets. "Many of

the people who were members are now residents of Camrose." The United Church in Ohaton had its origins in 1897 when people from the area south of

what was soon to become Camrose started looking for a place where they could worship and bury their loved ones. In 1898, after lobbying then Member of Parliament Clifford Sifton, they were granted 40 acres of land on section 14, township 46, range 20 west of four, with the condition that it could be used for nothing but church purposes. The church that was built on the land was officially dedicated on February 26, 1906. "They had a dedication service in the morning that took up most of the service that morning, and in the evening they had another service," said 93-year-old church historian Hilda Anderson. "On Monday night they had an entertainment night with local talent, some from Daysland and some from Camrose. They said with the two offerings and the entertainment night they took in a great deal of money for the church." After a period in which it sat empty, the church was moved to Ohaton in 1920. "They moved it here to Ohaton on skids and had it pulled by a tractor," said Anderson. The United Church name

came in about 1925 with the amalgamation of the Methodists, Presbyterians and Congregationalists. The United Church was active through the years with ladies' aid meetings, choirs and fund-raisers. "One of the first things the ladies' aid did was put on a fowl supper," said Anderson. "The food had to be cooked at home and brought to the church. They made $65 from that supper by charging fifty cents per plate." The church had a healthy Sunday School, with registration one year reaching as high as 145 pupils. "That almost boggles the mind," said Anderson. "You wonder how they got so many pupils inside." The first marriage in the church was one that united Pearl Aker and Louis Lambe. Pearl always told the story of how her mother had to keep the dinner hot for another hour because the minister was late. The last marriage in the church was a candlelight service in which the groom sang a solo to the bride. The United Church considered itself fortunate to have many fine ministers.

"The longest one we had stayed seventeen years," said Anderson. "The last one we had was there for eight years. She was a young lady from Ontario and she didn't have any young people coming in the end. You kind of had to feel sorry for her because there was nobody her own age." The pillars used in the basement of the church were hitching rails that had been used in Ohaton to tie up the horses and oxen. Lights came from the Tillicum Beach hall. "The Elks in Camrose bought the hall and they sawed it in half and moved it to Camrose," said Anderson. "They said that is where the lights in the church came from." The church is now owned by Ben and Melissa Dyck, who live right across the street. "We have renovated the space for family get-togethers, and will be probably doing lots of thanksgivings and things like that with my family," said Melissa. "We may rent it out in the future for wedding and baby showers but that is still a long way down the road."

Requirements to become a Canadian citizen Living in a foreign country can be a great experience. A chance to see the world through another culture's perspective, moving to a non-native place is something millions of people choose to do. For some, simply visiting or living in a foreign country for a short duration isn't enough. Some people love their adopted country so much they pursue citizenship in their new home. For those who have discovered that Canada is the place they want to permanent call home, becoming a Canadian citizen is necessary. To become Canadian citizens, Citizenship and Immigration Canada notes that there are many requirements before a person is considered eligible.

Age

Adults must be at least 18 years old to apply for Canadian citizenship. If applying for citizenship for a child under the age of 18, certain conditions must be met. The person applying must be the child's parent, adoptive parent or legal guardian. Another condition involves the child's residency. The child must be a permanent resident but does not need to have lived in Canada for three years. The final requirement is that the parent or adoptive parent must be a Canadian citizen or in the process of applying for Canadian citizenship. Residential status

In order to become a Canadian citizen, an applicant must have permanent resident status in Canada, and that status can-

not be in doubt. Residency status will be investigated and an immigration inquiry will be conducted. Time Lived in Canada

Adults applying for Canadian citizenship must have lived in Canada for three years in the four years prior to applying. During that four-year period, an applicant has to have lived in Canada for no less than 1,095 days. Children applying for Canadian citizenship do not need to meet this residency requirement. In some cases, time spent in Canada before becoming a permanent resident can be counted toward residency requirement as long as that time fell during the four-year period. Language

Canada's two official languages are English and French.

To become a Canadian citizen, an applicant must have adequate knowledge of at least one of these languages. The citizenship knowledge test and interactions with CIC staff will be used to assess an applicant's familiarity with either language. CIC staff will make sure applicants understand basic statements and questions, and applicants must be able to communicate basic information and respond to questions. Criminal History

An application for Canadian citizenship will be denied if an applicant: * has been convicted of a criminal offense or an offense under the Citizenship Act in the three years prior to applying * is currently being charged

with a criminal offense or an offense under the Citizenship Act * is in prison or on parole or probation * is under a CIC removal order * is under investigation for a war crime or has been convicted of a war crime or a crime against humanity * has had his or her Canadian citizenship revoked in the past five years Knowledge of Canada

Canadian citizenship applicants must understand what that citizenship entails, including the rights and responsibilities afforded to and required of Canadian citizens. A basic knowledge of Canadian history, culture, institutions and symbols is also required.

Camrose junior high student Tim MacKay captured the provincial standing long jump event and the attention of track and field coaches. Tim participated in the Provincial Hershey Track and Field Games on Saturday, June 22, at the University of Alberta's Foote Field in Edmonton. This meet included winners from all of the local track meets across Alberta. The winners become eligible to form part of the Pacific

MacKay nominated to attend Hershey major track event Northwest team that will compete in Hershey, Pennsylvania, in August at the North American Championships. Tim will find out on July 16 if he has been selected. His region represents Alberta/ NWT, BC/Yukon, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. Tim placed first in the long jump and is the current provincial champion. He also ran in the 200 metre and finished fourth overall, and made the final of the 100m, where he placed fifth. "Tim is a good athlete and

his advantage is in the fact he can compete in several events," said Jayson Boyson, Charlie Killam School athletic director. "I think that will really help his chances." Tim and all of the finalists in the 100m were invited to the Edmonton International Track Classic on Saturday, June 29, at Foote Field. He ran in the 100m final race prior to the men's event, featuring world champion and Olympic silver medalist, Johan Blake.

"The other letter was sent to an individual who recently had a loved one pass away. This letter advised that their loved one had secret investments and that the writer of the letter would like to share these with the family member. It happened to have the same name, so it was made to appear believable. But, like the other scam, they always request personal information and/or money up-front to claim the investment money," explained Const. Wilton. A pitch usually involves your assistance in moving large amounts of money to your bank account. Beware of tragic deaths, or people wishing to give you money. "If it sounds too good to be

true, it probably is not true," said Const. Wilton. "You do not normally pay money to collect money. This is also known as an advance fee scam. You don't win lotteries that you don't enter and you don't inherit money from long-lost relatives. It may happen in the movies, but not in real life." The Camrose Police Service would like people to be on the lookout for various frauds so they do not become victims. The Camrose Police Service is warning residents not to be fooled by scam artists. Any time someone you don't know is asking for personal information you should be cautious. "We recently had two people attend our office with similar scam letters. One was the classic inheritance scam, which is a scam that people are told that they have inherited money from a long lost relative and they only need to provide personal information and/ or legal fees to claim their inheritance," said Const. Matthew Wilton, forensic identification specialist and crime prevention officer with the Camrose Police Service. An inheritance scam claims there is a long-lost relative who passed away and they are looking for a relative to whom to give the funds. However, they ask for money in order to free the funds and any money sent is then lost. Secondly, they collect the personal information for future frauds.

Conservation Society presents on Piping Plovers By Samara Froland, Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society coordinator Alberta has a population of less than 300 piping plovers. Attendees learned this fact and more at the Beached presentation last Thursday. Amanda Rezansoff from the Alberta Conservation Association (ACA) shared her perspective on this cute little shorebird. Everyone at the Stoney Creek Centre quietly and attentively observed Rezansoff’s presentation. She talked about the struggles that piping plovers face and the Alberta Piping Plover Recovery Plan, which has been developed to monitor and conserve this species. “They are pretty particular. There’s a reason why they are endangered,” Rezansoff said. The wildlife biologist discussed key habitat characteristics important for piping plover survival. Piping plovers prefer a certain type of gravel on the beach,” Rezansoff said. She explained that the gravel must be suitable for nest building and camouflage. She also added that the lake or slough should have fluctuating water levels to remove vegetation in the area and once the water recedes ground will be exposed for nesting. In her presentation, Rezansoff included weather as another threat to offspring survival. Excessive rainfall and hail can especially be problematic, because the nests can become flooded or the eggs might be punctured. “Given the amount of rainfall that we’ve had this year, some of the previously productive lakes had no birds,” said Rezansoff. Rezansoff noted that the biggest threat to piping plovers is their predators, which include coyotes, crows and gulls. She explained that although other species, such as livestock and humans don’t predate on piping plovers, they can damage the eggs. Rezansoff showed the innovative exclosure design, a barrier that keeps predators out of the nests, but allows adult piping plovers to enter the area. Since the implementation of exclosures, the survival rate of piping plovers has increased noticeably. The CWSS summer program continues Thursday, July 4, at 7 p.m., at the Stoney Creek Centre with an event titled “Having a Hoot”. Amelie Roberto-Charron, a Beaverhill Bird Observatory employee, will lead this program. Roberto-Charron will be bringing a bird from the observatory to the presentation.

The Camrose Kodiaks will be looking for a strong showing in the Alberta Junior Hockey League's 50th anniversary season. Camrose begins the exhibition preseason in the EnCana Arena with the Drumheller Dragons on Aug. 26. The next night Camrose hosts the Okotoks Oilers, with both games starting at 7 p.m. The 2013 exhibition season includes tournaments in Okotoks, Calgary and Peace River. The Kodiaks face Brooks on Aug. 29, Okotoks on Aug. 30 and Fort McMurray on Aug. 31 at the Pason Centennial Arena in Okotoks. The Kodiaks open the regular season at home against the Brooks Bandits on Friday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Camrose will host the Drumheller Dragons in the EnCana Arena. All 16 teams will play 60 games each from Sept. 6 to March 2, 2014. The schedule includes 16 games at the AJHL Showcase from Sept. 26 to 28 in Spruce Grove. DARE grad held for Grade 6 students By Murray Green

The Camrose Police Service held a DARE graduation for about 230 Grade 6 students at Duggan Cinemas on June 14. "Half of the students attend in the morning and the other half in the afternoon because we have so many students," said Const. John Fernhout, school resource officer. "The day involves a free movie thanks to Duggan Cinemas, free lunch thanks to Panago Pizza, and a ceremony where each student walks to the front of the theatre and receives a DARE certificate. They also shake the hands of the dignitaries and then receive a DARE t-shirt." The students graduate if they have finished a nine-week curriculum with their DARE officer and complete a final project. The students discuss topics that will lead to healthy life style choices including staying away from harmful drugs, avoiding negative peer pressure and forming positive friendships in the community. "The DARE program also creates healthy relationships between police and the youth of Camrose, and is an integral part of the Camrose Police school resource officer program," said Const. Fernhout. "Our goal is to provide an atmosphere for the Grade 6 students that makes them feel proud of their accomplishment, and show them the community supports them." Music Centre Canada donated audio equipment for the graduation.
