Much Ado About Nothing, a William Shakespeare stage play that dates back to a first performance circa 1598, is coming to the stage of the Bailey Theatre. The entire cast of Much Ado About Nothing is from the student body of Cornerstone Christian Academy. Actors, including Stephen Nesdoly (playing the part of Benedick) and Darby Ryde (Beatrice), are in the final stages of preparation and rehearsal for the production.

By Murray Green Local recreational fishermen Everett Westerneng, 19, and Dallas Simons, 26, went to Coal Lake to enjoy the sport on May 18, and were found dead on May 28, 10 days later.

RCMP members, family and friends searched for four days before the police service temporarily suspended its search for the two men.

It was reported that the Camrose men were missing early Saturday morning, May 19. About 200 people launched a search for them and all they could come up with was a cap-

Local boaters from area found Monday sized four-metre boat, tackle box and other personal items belonging to the two Camrose fishermen. A truck belonging to one of the men was also found in the parking lot near the boat launch.

It is thought that neither of the men was wearing a lifejacket. RCMP said the search was a slow process due to the muddy and weedy bottom of the lake. An underwater recovery team from Edmonton also came up empty.

The Camrose and Area Children’s Choir is feeling the excitement mount as Canada Day approaches. The choir of 20 singers is flying to Ottawa to be part of Unisong 2012, a choral music festival involving youth choirs from all across the country, at which participants from every province perform twice on the stage of the National Arts Centre with accompaniment from the NAC orchestra.

What does it mean for a local choir to travel to Ottawa and participate in a festival such as this? It means children from the ages of 10 to 16 will find themselves immersed in cultural and

musical opportunities that they cannot obtain in Camrose. They will sing together with over 150 voices, work with a world class conductor, meet singers from every other province and perhaps a territory or two.

They will be exposed to bilingual environments, see sights of national historical significance, and find out about Canada in a hands-on way. They will perform in a world class facility, find out a bit about the workings of government in our tour of the parliament buildings, see works of art – sometimes in their original setting – and generally have an amazing time.

Our singers have been preparing and fundraising throughout our season, and our goal is in sight. The only thing lacking right now is a bit of the fundraising. Choir members have run bottle drives and special performances, sold labels, worked barbecues and breakfasts and cleaned up garbage, but we are still shy of our stated goal of raising $1,000 per child. The choir has applied for funding from local foundations, businesses and organizations, and overall we have been really pleased at the support and generosity of our community, especially from individuals who have stepped up to donate from their own resources.

This goal, if raised, would ease the burden on all families involved, but especially those with multiple singers in the group or who don't have the same family resources. When asked about the fundraising situation, director Joy-Anne Murphy responds “We are okay, we can manage, but there are some families for whom this is going to be a bit of a struggle, and it is such an amazing, horizon-expanding opportunity.”

The Camrose and Area Children’s Choir would like to appeal to any interested persons, businesses or organizations to consider whether they might support this fantastic, once-in-a-lifetime endeavor. Our choir is more than willing to exchange performance and/or community service in return for donations. Evraz employees set to return to work after three week dispute

It was back to work as usual for 105 employees at the EVRAZ Camrose steel plant on Monday, May 28.

After nearly a three-week dispute, Canadian Auto Workers union employees who staff the steel mills in Camrose accepted a four-year agreement with EVRAZ. Both sides went through tough negotiations, but in the end they agreed to a deal that is mutually beneficial on May 22. About 80 per cent of the workers voted in favour of the new deal on May 24.

"The overriding factor in agreeing to the settlement wasn't anything do with money, but rather the company agreeing to keep the defined pension plan in the agreement for new hires and the company agreeing to limit supervisors and foreman working outside of the bargaining agreement to hold their seniority rights for only a one year time frame, while previously it was open ended," said CAW national representative Todd Romanow in a press release.

The workers didn't want to strike, but did what they felt they had to do. "One thing is for certain; our members will return to making the best pipe in the world for our customers as we have always done with pride and excellence," said CAW Local 551 president Larry Luckwell.

The company says there are wage and pension increases, but they wouldn't provide details. Union employees began to picket outside of the EVRAZ property after 9 a.m. on May 5. EVRAZ implemented plans to ensure service to its customers, including safely resuming operations at the facility the week of May 7 with fully-trained EVRAZ employees. The mill kept operating with manpower from supervisors and regular non-union employees.

CAW Local 551 represented a bargaining unit of 105 workers at EVRAZ Camrose including trades persons, machine operators and labourers.

EVRAZ operates two pipe mills in Camrose. One is an electricresistance-weld (ERW) mill that manufactures pipe and casing up to 16 inches in diameter. This pipe is used primarily in drilling and transporting of oil and gas from the well head to larger transmission lines. It is also used to distribute natural gas once it arrives in the marketplace.

The second mill is a double-submerged, arc-welded (DSAW) mill that produces large-diameter pipe used for larger transmission lines. Both of these mills utilize the highest quality steel plate and coils to produce a broad range of steel pipe required in a broad range of applications.

ALL looking at feasibility of regional transit

Augustana honours graduate Cody Sroka, of Camrose, is going to have his work cut out this summer.

The Association for LifeWide Living (ALL) creative intern will be surveying communities up and down Highway 21 between Bashaw and Camrose to see what they need in terms of public transportation and how much they are willing to pay for it.

Data collected will be used

by ALL and its partners to design a transportation system network that would serve the entire Battle River region and to make a case for the pooling of resources in support of such a network.

"Once a network is in place communities to be better positioned to get the support they need," said ALL president Jane Ross.

The first part of the rural transportation network was launched May 26, when an 18-passenger bus made available by the Bashaw Transit Society delivered passengers to a regional event in Hardisty which is part of an ALL series called

The trip was an opportunity for ALL and interested communities to gauge interest in a rural bus service, as well as determine costs.

"We don't know yet how often or how far the bus will run," said Ross. "Much depends on what Cody is able to learn over the course of the summer and how that information can be used in subsequent phases of the overall project."

Initially, it is expected the

bus will go up and down the Bashaw-Camrose line. The anticipated cost of a trip from Bashaw to Camrose and back again, or vice versa, is expected to be in the range of $12, a number that may change as more data is obtained.

Information about rural transportation systems has been provided by Camrose County, the City of Wetaskiwin, and the Alberta Rural Development Network, which is the association of colleges and universities in Alberta. Financial assistance thus far for the cost of investigating options for getting rural residents along Highway 21 to and from urban centres has come from Bashaw & District Health and Wellness Foundation, Camrose Family Thrift Shop, and the STEP program.

"We want to contribute to a situation where quality of life is more sustainable in the Battle River region," said Ross. "The idea is that if people can't get to medical services, if they can't get to banking, if they can't get to shopping, if they can't visit people outside their community, the communities often

tend to fizzle out or even die.

Without transportation, people in rural communities often feel obliged to move to larger centres like Camrose, Edmonton or Calgary."

One of the successful transit system models at which Sroka will be looking is the one established at Wetaskiwin and surrounding rural areas.

"The one at Wetaskiwin has been reasonably successful, helping over 130 people a week give or take," said Sroka. "I will be looking at their system first to see what works and what doesn't. It could be something as simple as an intricacy in scheduling that has been overlooked or that hasn't yet been thought of."

Sroka will also be talking to the operators of ASSIST, a transit system used in Calgary west and rural areas about a computer program designed for scheduling and bus tracking. It is anticipated that aspects of this program can be used in advertising the existence of the Bashaw bus and its trip schedule.

"We want to get the information to as many of the rural areas in and around the Battle

River region as possible," he said.

"I am sure there are ways to spread the word so we can make it more viable and profitable."

Ross said a transit system could have far reaching impacts on the overall health status of people in the Battle River region as ALL continues its efforts towards having dialysis and cataract services.

"As Dennis Twomey, the former economic development coordinator used to say, what is good for Bashaw is good for Camrose and what is good for Camrose is good for Daysland and the region."

Sroka will be graduating from Augustana June 3 with a Bachelor of Arts in History with first class standing.

"He is interested in rural matters and knows how to link his academic studies with practical things in the community," said Ross.

He teaches at an international school and holds the position Head of Mathematics (Primary). During a recent school break Dean and his wife, Pearl, took the highspeed train from Shanghai to Beijing. Plea for preventive action now In the time span of just over one year, Camrose has been deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic deaths of two care workers in group homes for troubled and/or developmentally disabled persons. Most troubling is the fact that the public is unaware of any steps that may have been taken to prevent, or at least minimize the possibility of the second, or even more similar occurrences, here or anywhere in the province.

Society has a responsibility to care for those who do not have the ability to care for themselves or who pose a risk to themselves or others. As a society, we have tried to do that and the development of supervised group homes was done with the best interests of the clients in mind.

We thought that living with supervised care in a normal, homelike environment in local communities would be better for the residents than institutional care.

Society has an equal responsibility to protect the caregivers. They tend to be especially caring and trusting people who find satisfaction working with persons with disabilities. It’s not a popular vocation and, if it is seen to be life-threatening, it will probably become even more difficult to find staff. That does not bode well for vulnerable people who need the care and supervision.

This situation must not be ignored. We have tried the experiment of group homes with the best of intentions. While there are benefits, we cannot continue the practice if it puts at risk the lives of care givers working alone and perhaps other group home residents as well. In each of the Camrose cases, the deceased care givers were alone with the perpetrators of the crimes.

In the interests of safety for group home residents, we carefully screen their care givers; I believe we also assess the group home residents with the safety of care givers in mind. One problem is that a reliable prediction of behaviour is difficult to determine, perhaps impossible. Who would have suspected that a former Colonel in Canada's military forces, Russell Williams, was capable of rape and murder? He came from a family of privilege, had two university degrees, was “an elite pilot and shining bright star of the military,” trusted with transporting prime ministers, foreign dignitaries including Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.

The two care workers’ deaths in Camrose provide cause to seriously question the wisdom of the well-intentioned group home concept. With open minds, we can learn from experiments and even failures. With concern for the safety and well-being of both group home residents and their care givers, we suggest that institutional care be made more like a home environment. I live in an institution for elderly persons who need some assistance (Rosealta Lodge). The environment is homelike, residents have independence, and neither residents nor staff are ever alone. Change takes time, we know, but it won't happen unless we take steps to make it happen. Let’s clamour for action now! What are your suggestions?

Re: May 8th letter from CAPP: pro fracking I just got back from burying my 96-year-old mother, in Oliver, B.C., and spending the first weeks of our newest grandchild’s life in Vancouver, when I read the May 8 letter to the editor by the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers. This letter, it seems, was intended to reassure those readers of The Booster who may have started to have second thoughts about unconventional gas fracking that all is well and no harm will be caused to our water, air, or land.

For now, let me write as a son and a grandfather rather than as a professor.

After the funeral of my

mother who immigrated with us to Canada in 1951 so we could be rooted in a new land, my wife and I went to Vancouver to hold our newest grandchild in our arms.

What Canada is she growing into? Will there still be adequate drinking water for her, as we squander it and pump it full of chemicals (the fracking process makes most water impossible to ever use again)?

Will our use of unconventional oil and gas, that according to a recent Cornell University study are as dirty or dirtier than burning coal (if we measure the full life-cycle), have accelerated climate change to such an extent that she will live in a world where growing safe and adequate amounts of food becomes a serious challenge?

The parents of our granddaughter have learned market gardening near Camrose and at the UBC farm. They dream of farming either in Alberta or B.C. Will our granddaughter wake up one day with the 24/7 whining of hydraulic compressors that take the tranquility of the farming neighbourhood away? Will her neighbours have signed a gas lease, because real net farm income is still in the crisis it has been since 1985? Will she or her

parents get rashes on their skin as they shower, because all of sudden there are chemicals and 17 times higher concentrations of methane in their domestic water, that is beyond anything “naturally occurring”? Will she play near their pump house, which suddenly explodes because of methane build up? Will her animals lose large patches of their fur and will some of her neighbours die because of a disruption of their endocrine system? As I hold her in my arms, I am aware that all of these things have happened to people not only in Pavilion, Wyoming, Dimock, Pennsylvania, and elsewhere in the U.S., but has begun happening in B.C. and in Alberta. So as a grandfather, what is my responsibility to her, beyond holding her in my arms?

If you, dear reader, whether grandparent or not, are concerned about the air, water, and land for our and future generations, I invite you to attend a conference initiated by concerned citizens and students: “Responsibility for the Land: Conversations about Fracking in Alberta” to be held at Augustana from November 2 and 3.

Camrose County searching for beautiful yards

The Camrose County Beautification Awards Program has been launched.

All county residents are eligible to enter one of four categories of awards. "We want people to nominate their neighbours if they think they have a good looking yard," said Kevin MacDonald, assistant manager of agricultural and environmental services for the county.

"We saw in the Camrose Booster that the County of Beaver had a program and we wanted to expand on that to recognize people who have nice yards." A committee came up with some criteria to help with the judging.

Along with the nomination, the county would like photographs and must have consent from the landowners.

“We want to highlight and reward our residents for the hard work and pride they have shown in our county."

The four categories are: mature farmyard/acreage; newly developed acreage (two years and under); vegetable Garden and urban yard (hamlets under county administration). The yards will be judged on design, maintenance and choice of plant material.

“We want to highlight and reward our residents for the hard work and pride they have shown in our county by developing and landscaping their farm yards and acreages, where they live, work and play," said County Reeve Don Gregorwich. "The time and effort that folks put into their properties reflects a deep love of the land that epitomizes our rural residents and their families.”

Eligible properties may be nominated by county residents from June 1 until July 15 and pending landowner permission, judging will take place over a two-day period in the latter part of July.

"A winner and runner-up will be selected in each category.

They will be presented their award at the County Anniversary Celebration on August 25," added Kevin. "First place winners will receive a $100 gift certificate from a local greenhouse and two tickets to the 50th anniversary celebration featuring the Danny Hooper Band at the Camrose Regional Exhibition. The second place winners will receive two tickets as well."

Mabel Johnson

Herta Howeihe

Mabel was born on May 3, 1923 in the Waterglen area to Christina and Fred Lundeen. She had a younger sister Dorothy and they were raised in the Malmo area.

Mabel met Allen at a church function and she often spoke of how it was love at first sight. They were married on November 24, 1944 and resided at the Johnson family farm until the late ’60s when they moved to Camrose. They were blessed with two children, Rodney and Linda.

Life on the farm was hard at times.

However, it was enriched by their talents for gardening, their love for travel and their dedication to extended family, church, community and by their love for each other and family. Their move to Camrose gave them the opportunity to prefect their ‘green thumb’ techniques. Their home was a source of self pride and accomplishment each summer with the successful growth of many colorful plants and a wonderful garden.

Mabel’s talents were numerous. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, and doting grandmother and great-grandmother; an accomplished knitter, cross-stitcher, seamstress and a wonderful cook. She was often called upon to do floral arrangements for summer weddings. After her children had left home, she worked as a legal secretary and then as a clerical assistant. She was a great source of encouragement and quiet counseling.

During retirement years, she and Allen, and often Dorothy, enjoyed traveling by motorhome to spend winters in Arizona and in the summer to join up with their family and friends for camping adventures.

Mabel and Allen moved into Deer Meadows in the fall of 2005 and, following Allen’s death in 2007, she continued to stay there until failing health necessitated a move to a different care facility in 2010. She passed away at Lamont Health Care Centre on May 16, 2012.

Mabel was predeceased by her loving husband Allen, and her sister Dorothy.

Mabel is survived by her children Rodney Johnson (Arlene) of Camrose; Linda (Wilf) Litwin of Fort Saskatchewan; and daughterin-law Irene Johnson of Mulhurst. She is lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Bill Johnson, Susan (Ric) Alves, Kristi Litwin, Nancy (Mike) Phillips, Brad (Catherine) Litwin; and six great-grandchildren Christina, Mitchell, Brooklyn, Benny, Tyler and Alexis.

A Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. from Burgar Memorial Chapel with Rev. Richard Edwards officiating. Inurnment took place in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose.

Herta was born on June 11, 1922 in Voleenian, Poland. She was the second daughter of August and Mathilda Kleinpeter.

Herta and Fritz married and had two children Gretchen (Margarete) and Fritz.

Shortly after the war, Herta, Fritz and the rest of the Kleinpeter family left Germany with only the clothes on their backs and a bit of money. They stayed in refugee camps in West Germany until Herta’s Uncle Amil and Aunt Olga Schachtsnider, who resided in Wetaskiwin, sponsored them to come to Canada.

Shortly after, they moved to Sedgewick.

They purchased and ran a bakery, and soon expanded it into a coffee shop with lunch service. Herta loved to knit, sew, golf, ski, play cards and garden. She spent many hours working on the house and landscaping the yard.

When Fritz passed away in 1981, she spent some time at the acreage and in town before she settled at Flagstaff Lodge. She was very content there, getting involved in the many craft sales, fashion shows and puzzle bees. She made a lot of Kleenex boxes, cry babies, did the mending and sewed aprons for the staff.

Herta leaves behind a loving family who will miss her: Fritz and Deb Howeihe, grandchildren Teresa (Paul), Ken (Angie), Desirae (Micah), and five greatgrandchildren; and Gretchen and Robert Frith, and grandchildren Erika (Ken) and Graeme.

Herta is now with the Angels.

A funeral service was held on Saturday May 26, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. from Burgar Funeral Home Chapel with Bev Swanson officiating.

Men at Risk program helps save lives

Alberta Health Services introduced a Men At Risk program to offer help to those who feel depressed. That help is available in Camrose.

The Men At Risk program coordinator for the Camrose area is Sandra Loades. "We provide a free presentation and talk about the signs of depression, which can lead to suicide. We help with suicide prevention," said Sandra.

"We go over the signs of depression, so this isn't just for those who are struggling. We talk to everyone, so they can help identify problems sooner and can refer them to people who can help them get back on track. Women have men in their life and our presentation can help them identify the signs. This just isn't for men."

Sandra's work load includes Addictions and Mental Health, Promotion Facilitator and the Men At Risk program. "Our hope is that by talking to groups, people can recognize those signs of feeling stressed, and that if you are feeling depressed, what to watch for. We talk about how to approach someone when you see those signs or changes," said Sandra. "Talking to people and understanding the changes in

their lives can help. We don't expect people to be the experts, just be able to notice the signs and to refer them to a doctor."

She often calls on speaker Peter LeBlanc to deliver a powerful message about depression and suicide. "Sandra goes through all of the services that are available to help people and then I talk about my personal story with struggles of depression and attempted suicide," said Peter. "Work place organizations or businesses offer safety training and we are called in to be part of that. If someone is depressed, then they are not thinking of safety issues and it ties in together."

In 2009, of the 483 deaths by suicide in Alberta, 377 were males. "Men at Risk is geared towards men because men die by suicide in numbers almost four times that of women," said Peter. "It is believed that male socialization contributes to the problem of male suicides. Men are expected to be tough, financially successful, and the slightest show of vulnerability is seen as a blemish on their manhood.

Men tend to ignore their stress entirely or deal with it by engaging in self-destructive actions or other risk-taking behaviours.

They keep everything bottled up

inside. Sometimes people don't see it coming."

Men may suppress their feelings until they erupt as irritability, anger or hostility. They may simply isolate themselves by avoiding social contacts altogether.

"Signs may include withdrawing from others, lack of interest in activities, changes in eating and/or sleeping habits, inability to handle problems at home and/or the workplace, feeling hopeless, talking about or making a plan for suicide," said Peter. "They might be involved in more risky business, such as gambling. I know in my own case, I was depressed for a long time. I didn't associate it with depression for some time. Part of our message is to provide hope and open lines of communications. It took me a long time to reach out for help."

Suicide is a complex issue with contributing factors that vary from person to person. It could begin with a death of a loved one, loss of a relationship, a job or a health crisis. "I had these really high expectations of what I should be. I was in the ministry for about 25 years," said Peter. "I had these expectations of being a perfect role model for everyone.

I didn't realize right away that I was the one putting the stress on myself. I realized I was trying to be somebody that wasn't me.

That took a long time to sort out."

Peter left the ministry because the stress was leading to depression. "I then went to work in the insurance business and wanted to be a successful businessman. I then put those same expectations on myself again.

Instead of being a perfect priest, I wanted to be the perfect businessman."

Peter learned to handle the stressful situations better as life went on. "This is an opportunity for me to share my story with others to help them when they are going through tough times," said Peter.

"We also leave people with information so they know who to call, information on books to read and to have checkups with doctors," said Sandra.

There are local resources available through the Camrose Community Addiction and Mental Health office that offer program initiatives to address the concern of suicide in our communities.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is available. The goal of the program is to help the general public iden-

tify and assist a person at risk.

ASIST teaches people to recognize the warning signs of suicide, deal with the immediate crisis and support a person at risk to seek further help.

Tattered Teddies and Straight Talk are suicide prevention sessions offered to those who work with children and youth.

Memory of Francois Adam lives at museum

A brass pot engraved with the Adam coat of arms was donated to Camrose and District Centennial Museum last week.

"It was sent by the grandson of Francois, Jerry Adam Sr., who now lives in Warren, Michigan," said Stan Trautman, a friend of the Adam family and member of the Duhamel Historical Society.

"He obviously felt the Camrose museum was a good place for it."

The family heirloom, estimated to be at least 150 years old, was brought to Canada from the Adam family mansion, called Walzin, in Belgium. The mansion was destroyed by the German army when it was run out of Belgium during the Second World War. "It (the brass pot) was given to my mother, Virginia Adam, sometime in 1925," said Jerry. "She gave it to me in 1975."

Adam left Belgium to come to Canada in 1883.

"He came here because of his health," said Trautman. "His lungs were bad and because of that he had to change places. Several members of his family had already died."

Joining the Canadian Pacific Raillroad, Adam assisted as a consulting engineer in building a roadbed through the mountains.

When this work ran out in 1885 he traded furs for three years at Caracajoux Point, approximately 120 km south of Peace River.

It was during a trip back to Belgium that Adam met his wife, Laure Gillet. The couple was married in 1884 along the banks of the Stoney Creek.

Convinced by Father Beillevaire of the need to give up his fur trading business, Adam started a store/post office at the Laboucane settlement (the original Duhamel).

from the east and west and south, came to this tiny community to buy groceries, dry goods and staples, to bring milk to the creamery and get their mail."

By 1895, Adam owned 35 acres on the north side of the Battle River, near Gwynne, where he raised cattle, horses and hogs.

Upon learning that CPR was extending its rail line east of Wetaskiwin, Adam moved his family to what was soon to become Camrose. A Light Into The Past, a History of Camrose, reports that as a CPR agent, it was he, who in the final analysis decided that Stoney Creek should be an urban centre, and it was he, who in late 1904, persuaded the land surveyors to make main street 100 feet in

width, "an innovation unequalled in the survey of similar centres in the province."

A 1910 report on Camrose issued by the Board of Trade stated "The main street is exceptionally well laid out. It is 100 feet wide and extends one mile in length."

Adam owned and operated Stoney Creek Lumber Company (later renamed Camrose Lumber and Grain Company) at the corner of 51 Avenue and 51 Street, and a tannery that was destroyed by fire. In 1916 he and one of his sons purchased the Ford agency from Duggan and Fletcher, later selling the business to McAfee Motors.

way relied on Adam's expertise to establish and plan townsites on a line between Tofield and Calgary that included a 3,972 foot long and 120 foot high bridge made of wood that extended from one side of the Battle River Valley to the other.

"He started a real estate office which sold all the land that is now New Norway," said Jerry.

Although he didn't involve himself in politics, Adam made contributions in other ways. He was a charter member of The Canadian Club, set up to foster civic pride as well as promote it to others, served as Justice of the Peace, and donated the site of the first Catholic church, built where Grace Lutheran Church now stands.

Francois and Laure Adam had six sons and two daughters, a few of whom moved to Warren, just outside Detroit, during the time of the Great Depression, in order to find work.

"His wife would often go there to visit the children and babysit the grandchildren, and it was there that she died," said Camrose and District Centennial Museum Society vice president Dave Fitchie.

The brass pot is one of just a few artifacts from Francois Adam that the Camrose and District Centennial Museum has in its possession.

"We have a few of his writings about his life among the aboriginals and have a few of the tent pegs he collected from the Hudson's Bay trading post, but not a lot more," said Camrose and District Centennial Museum curator and director of operations Corinna Nilson.

Adam departed for the Peace Country in the early 1920s, but came back to Camrose in the 1940s. He passed away at the age of 104 years on May 14, 1961, at the Lacombe Home in Midnapore, south of Calgary.

Funeral services were held at St. Francis Xavier Church, in Camrose, followed by interment at the Duhamel cemetery. In a final tribute, The Camrose Canadian reported Adam's death marks the end of one link in recent history, a life which saw the transition from ox cart to space flight, and from almost unsettled virgin prairie to developing metropolitan centres."

Former Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer kicked off the first Camrose Founders Days with the unveiling of a sign designating 52 A Street as Francois Adam Street.

Council authorizes construction contract for arts centre

City of Camrose signing officers have been authorized

by City council to enter into a contract with Clark Builders for the construction of the performing arts centre on the property of the University of Alberta.

Total projected cost of the building, subject to a legal review of the construction contract, will be $14,650,000.

"Contingent on what happens with this, there will be sod turning arrangements made in the very near future," said Camrose Community Services general manager Paul Nielsen in a presentation to City council May 14.

Clark Builders is no stranger to large projects, having constructed the multi-purpose recreation facility (formerly known as the Edgeworth Centre), and several buildings on the University of Alberta's north campus.

It also refurbished the Camrose Community Centre.

The Camrose performing arts centre project budget will be "locked in" using a "best value" design/delivery model.

Unlike a traditional build where

Everything is scheduled to begin at 5:30. the owner of the building hires an architect to do the design, which is then thrown out to the contractor for quotes, a design build is one in which the contractor that is chosen collaborates with an architect, which it hires, to complete the project within a certain amount.

"What we do, instead of tendering a project, is essentially tender a budget," said Nielsen. "We say, for example, that we have $18 million and we want a performing arts centre. So the contractor goes out and hires an architect and together they explore if it can be done for that total. It essentially fixes the budget."

The risk associated with a design build is that the owner of the building does not have as much say in the design as it would under the traditional method.

"The contractor comes to us and says yes we can build a performing arts centre for a certain amount," said Nielsen. "We have a price but we don't know about the quality of construction, the quality of seats and how much leg room there is."

Nielsen said design builds are becoming more common as a way of handling large construction projects.

"People are tired of saying we want to build something and seeing the tenders come in 20, 30 or 40 per cent over budget."

Clark Builders was one of six contractors that were asked to submit requests for proposals for the performing arts centre.

Contingencies The balance remaining in the performing arts centre contingency fund is $30,000.

"On a construction job of $14 million to $18 million,

$30,000 is virtually nothing," said Nielsen. "Typically, contingencies are in the range of five per cent of total project costs."

The original request for proposals asked the contractors to use a $250,000 contingency and had a silent or hidden contingency of an additional $250,000.

City manager Damian Herle told council it is not unusual for costs to increase once a construction project gets started.

"The Edgeworth facility ended up being approximately $1 million over budget. It cost the City $30 million instead of the projected budget of $29 million."

Herle also noted that City administration may be recommending some additions to the facility, such as the completion of a multi purpose shell.

"The logic from that is a

large enhancement to the facility that will also have a revenue stream attached to it.

That multi purpose room can be rented for a variety of community or family functions and that kind of thing – weddings or whatever the case may be – and is certainly an enhancement to the community.

Councillor Brandon Blatz expressed concern about the size of the washrooms, which are of an adequate size now but may not be big enough if the facility has big crowds.

"If we are looking at things that can add value I would like to add the washroom issue."

Mayor Marshall Chalmers said council may have various options to look at if there are further requests for funding.

"We have all kinds of partnerships involved here."

The City of Camrose is committed to providing $12.75 million towards the total project cost of $18 million. The total includes grant funding, a debenture and front-ending funds that will be repaid through the fundraising campaign.

Krueger bringing book to Camrose

Former Camrose school teacher Gladys Krueger will be reading from her book False Love, True Love at Wisemen's Way Bookstore in Camrose June 1.

I'm looking forward to coming back," said the Didsbury resident. "I have a lot of good memories of Camrose from my time there."

False Love, True Love is a fictional novel about Jill Jackson, a first-year teacher at a school in rural Saskatchewan who becomes caught up in the dark secret of Melissa Weber, a student in the third grade.

"She wonders what has caused this girl to become so withdrawn and finds it has something to do with the girl's father," said Krueger.

The book also deals with Jill's relationship with Dan Fischer.

"He intrigues her and she wishes that he would propose but something is holding him back," said Krueger.

First Love, True Love carries an important message about God's protection and the need to forgive.

"My first thought was that I was going to write a murder mystery and deal with forgiveness in that way, " said Krueger, "but the ending I wanted worked better with a romance. The way that Jill puts together all the pieces is very effective."

Krueger wrote the rough draft of the 264-page novel in a couple of months.

"I knew that I couldn't keep putting it off," she said, "so I just went to work one day on the computer. I didn't tell anyone what I was doing. I thought to say that I was writing a book would be too pretentious."

Krueger assigned characteristics to each of the students and teachers, then asked herself

how they would react to certain situations.

"I would go to bed at night and thinking about all the challenges Jill was facing," she said.

Krueger is grateful for the support she received from her

husband throughout the writing process.

"He was so helpful," she said.

"He would tell me to go to work and ask me to call him whenever I needed something to eat."

Krueger is thrilled with the response False Love, True

Love has received from those who have taken the time to read it. Leah H., from Carstairs, described it as a thought provoking read, while Greta U., from Edmonton, said the characters were so real that she almost felt she knew a couple of them. The most effluent review came from Joyce F., from Cayley, who said it is a great story.

"I can see your zest for life," said Joyce, "your high moral standards (without preaching), and the way you speak for the hurting and oppressed. There are definitely endless possibilities for a whole series of stories based on the characters you chose for your first novel. I am going to read your book again – it is a mood lifter."

Krueger taught elementary grades at Sparling School, and junior high at Charlie Killam.

"The kids were wonderful and I found we were always able to relate well with each other," she said. "I remember one time the Grade 3s coming to my house when I had laryngitis. They told me it was okay if I just wrote on the board and that they would be good."

Krueger had great respect for Jack Stuart when she was at Charlie Killam.

"Jack was the principal when I was there and he was amazing," she said. "He always knew and remembered the kids.

He was a great man to work under."

Along with False Love, True Love, Krueger has written several articles and poems. She has also done volunteer work in Africa, Asia and South America.

The Wisemen's Way reading and book signing is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.

Copies of the book have been ordered by Camrose Public Library.

Prayer breakfast a success Submitted

On Wednesday, May 23, at 7:30 a.m., some good news happened. About 100 people gathered at the Norsemen Inn for the Camrose City and County Prayer Breakfast.

Early in the planning for 2012, Mayor Marshall Chalmers extended an invitation to his counterpart Camrose County Reeve Don Gregorwich to join him. Thus the Camrose City and County Prayer Breakfast was launched. Reeve Gregorwich stated that he was very pleased that he could be a part of this expression of faith.

This year’s celebration of prayer was kicked off by the children’s choir Seismic, led by Carolyn Hartman, singing O Canada. A few moments later they set the tone for the remainder of the morning with their rendition of Love Can Turn the World.

Guest speakers, Ron and Vivianne Grue, carried this theme forward with their image-rich presentation of inspirational stories from their hands-on ministry to people in developing nations.

Mayor Marshall Chalmers said that he is very pleased that the Prayer Breakfast includes the Reeve and County of Camrose. “We share so much in terms of our concern for growth, development, and the wellbeing of our constituents, that it only seems right that we can also share the impact of the spiritual,” said Chalmers.

The event was organized by the Camrose and District Ministerial Association.

Bailey Barbershop Bonanza brings best groups to local stage

Some of the top barbershop singers in the province will be on the Bailey Theatre stage at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 16.

The local group Three Plus One Barbershop Quartet is made up of four local Camrose pastors who sing a variety of familiar melodies in the traditional barbershop style.

This will be their second appearance on the Bailey stage.

"The presentation by the Three Plus One Quartet at the opening of the Bailey Theatre was very well received and appreciated by the audience," said Gary Taylor, co-producer of the show. "Secondly, the vaudeville history of the Bailey would include four part harmony as a part of many past productions here, and many of the show bills of this era included such groups. Importantly, in the past Camrose had a very active barbershop chapter and chorus and it is felt by many that such an event may resurrect renewed interest."

The local group has attracted new fans. Members include Norman Lentz (lead), Jim Appleby (tenor), Murray Cowan (bass) and Kristian Wold (baritone).

The lead (second tenor), usually

sings the melody. The tenor harmonizes above the melody. The bass sings the lowest harmonizing notes and the baritone provides the in between notes above or below the lead singer.

"These generous individuals, in spite of their busy schedules, make the time to sing in the many care facilities in Camrose and at other community events," said Gary. "Typical of their endless efforts, a portion of the evening’s proceeds will be donated to the Camrose Pastoral Care Association to further enhance the spiritual needs of the community."

Three Plus One reminds us of the type of entertainment that was once common on the Bailey Theatre stage. "Barbershop harmony is a style of unaccompanied (a cappella) singing in which three voices harmonize to a melody all in close harmony," explained Gary.

The event will also include some very special guests. "The Wild Rose Harmonizers are a barbershop chorus consisting of 15 to 18 men from Central Alberta with singers young and old from Red Deer, Sylvan Lake, Pine Lake, Lacombe and the Rocky Mountain House areas.

The group is a proud member of the world wide Barbershop Harmony Society, dedicated to the promotion of singing a cappella four part harmony in the traditional barbershop style," said Gary.

Under the current direction of John Smith, The Harmonizers sing at hospitals, nursing homes, seniors' lodges and many community functions regularly throughout the year. Each year they provide the community an offering of Singing Valentines, besides staging an annual show.

They also take part in annual competitions with other district choruses. "The members of the group sing because they enjoy it and love bringing enjoyment to others through musical harmony," added Gary.

The only musical instrument used by most barbershop groups is a pitch pipe used to provide a starting note for the selection to be sung.

The Grove City Chorus is a 39-man chorus made up of men from all over the greater Edmonton Area, from Gunn, Onoway, Leduc, Devon, St. Albert, Edmonton and Spruce Grove, where they meet every Wednesday. The chorus formed

in 1988 and was chartered in 1992, so this will be a 20th anniversary performance. They have performed in many venues including twice in the Winspear Centre.

Grove City Chorus competes on an annual basis and presently is ranked second in Alberta.

Two years ago they qualified to compete in Portland, Oregon, and with the help of some of the Calgary chapters’ members, they were presented with the best small chorus award. Songs commonly associated with the barbershop style are those from the days of Tin Pan Alley from about 1890 to 1920. However, today’s barbershop harmony quartets or choruses often sing more recent material from light rock to gospel.

Also on the performance list are the Western Hospitality Singers from Calgary. "They are an award winning barbershop chorus that has won the Alberta Barbershop Championship for a dozen consecutive years," said Gary.

The Western Hospitality Singers were organized in 1986 and have been a chartered chorus in the Barbershop Harmony Society for over 20

years. These years have been filled with a wide variety of activities that has taken them to many contests and shows in Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest, as well as Utah, California, Ohio and Missouri.

"About two dozen members of this chorus will be included in our Bailey Barbershop Bonanza," explained Gary.

The featured guest emcee for the evening will be Don Craig from Calgary’s Evergreen District, Barbershop Harmony Society. "Don is noted for his commitment to barbershop and his vast experience in working with musical groups and audiences. His dynamic character and expertise in barbershop harmony are sure to be a welcome addition to an already promising evening," said Gary. "We are lucky to have someone of his stature helping us on stage and assisting us in bringing back this popular style of music.

Barbershop music is becoming very popular again in the province."

Alexis Brown of the Camrose Composite High School threw a discus 24.02 metres to place second in the junior girls' event at zones to advance to the track and field provincials.

CCHS hosted the central zone track meet on Wednesday, May 23, to determine which athletes moved on to provincials held in Edmonton on June 1 and 2.

Jenna Rust of CCHS came in second in the intermediate girls' 800 metre run in zones to move on in the event.

Anna Eriksson of CCHS crossed the finish line in second place in the 1,500 senior girls' run with a time of 5:48.09 and also placed second in the 3,000 metre run in 12:07.47.

Becky Sjogren of New Norway came in second in the senior girls' long jump with a height of 4.31 metres.

Ashley Galenza of Hay Lakes placed second in the senior girls' high jump with a 1.25 metre leap.

Bryan Cole of CCHS came in second in the junior boys' 3,000 metre run with a time of 10:29.67.

Connor Foreman won the senior boys' shot put with a 13.06 metre launch to move on to provincials.

Spencer Clark of New Norway captured the senior boys' javelin throw with a 42.18 metre throw.

Ballet Camrose will wrap up another busy and successful year with a pair of upcoming shows at Charlie Killam School.

A dance extravaganza featuring all the students who performed at events and competitions throughout the year will be held at 6:30, June 9.

That will be followed the next day at 2:00 with Ballet Camrose's presentation of Snow White.

Ballet Camrose students have been working on Snow White since last September.

"They are very excited," said Ballet Camrose director Colleen Salahub. "They've been busy painting backdrops, readying props, and getting their costumes ready, and have been involved in extra rehearsals to make sure things go just right."

Braeden Adain, one of Ballet Camrose's oldest students, at age 14, will play the role of the prince, while Cassandra Olsen, will play the lead role of Snow White.

"Cassandra was given the lead role because she is our senior student," said Salahub. "She helped choose the play and has helped quite a bit with the artistic elements."

The costumes for Snow White were designed by Edie Metzker, a friend of the school.

"They are very beautiful and exquisite," said Salahub.

Ballet Camrose students had a successful showing at the Coronation Music Festival, winning four top awards, including Most Promising Dancer, which went to Jocelyn Olsen. In Vermilion, the students combined to win 23 top awards, including the one for most promising performer, which went to Cassandra Olsen, and another for choreography by a duet which performed a dance called The Teacher.

Medallion winners at the Camrose and District Music Festival in May were: Charlotte Thiessen and Mackenzie Goosen in eight and under; Jocelyn Marohn in 10 and under; Kristen Pearson in 12 and under; Kaitlyn Levitt in 14 and under; and Randee Badry in 16 and under.

Jocelyn Olsen won the $150 dance scholarship while Cassandra Olsen won the $75 prize for excellence.

The medallion for large group went to a group of 13 dancers for their performance of Brick In The Wall. The medallion for small group went to six dancers for their performance of Candlelight.

Salahub said the Ballet Camrose students worked very hard during the course of the year.

"A lot of them came for multiple weekly classes. They worked nicely as a group and they treated each other with respect. They were happy for the chance to dance and put their artistry on display."

Ballet Camrose students range in age from three to 18.

On Sunday, June 3, Camrose Visually Impaired Persons (VIPs) will be holding its 13th annual walk, now called the Ron McVee Memorial Walk, to raise funds for local CNIB programs and services for people with vision loss.

A full afternoon is planned at the Bill Fowler Centre to make the event a family affair. Registration for the walk begins at noon. The walk starts at 1 p.m. and goes around Mirror Lake. A barbecue, music, socializing, T-shirts and gift card prizes will be part of the fun.

Last year, during a day that was filled with rain, wind, cloud, thunder and even some sunshine, about 30 walkers raised more than $3,500 for CNIB. "In past years when the weather is nice, we have averaged about $5,000 in funds raised during the walk," said organizer Joyce McVee. "If someone is declared legally blind, they receive their first white cane, sweeping cane or identification cane free. These funds help with that program. All of the funds stay in Alberta and that is important to us."

CNIB provides communitybased support, knowledge and a national voice to ensure Canadians who are blind or partially sighted have the confidence, skills and opportunities to fully participate in life. CNIB delivers programs and services to help people overcome the challenges of sight loss, increase their independence and achieve their goals. The Ron McVee Memorial Walk helps support vital services in Camrose.

Use a hat to cover up when your head will be exposed to strong sunlight. When going swimming in a pool or at the beach, consider combing a conditioner through your hair prior to add a layer of protection against the salt or chlorine.

5. Processing: Consult with an experienced stylist as to what you can do with your hair and what should be avoided.

6. Comb and brush with caution: It’s not necessary to comb or brush your hair to the point of tears. In fact, excessively tugging on the hair can cause it to weaken and break. Only brush dry hair. Use a widetoothed comb on wet hair to detangle. And always handle the hair gently.

7. Get regular haircuts: Split ends can quickly ruin your hairstyle. Even if you are growing out your hair, it is important to go for regular trimming to maintain your shape. Haircuts enable you to style your hair more easily to create the look you desire.

Community service-learning (CSL) is an educational model that encourages students to get out of the traditional university classroom and engage with the community in order to make connections between theory and practice. This past academic year, Rajan Rathnavalu, a third year undergraduate student at the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus, had the opportunity to join a seniors' dance group as the CSL component of an introductory class in modern philosophy. Throughout his weekly experiences with the group, Rajan was able to reflect on how the benefits of community service-learning taught him an invaluable lesson about the nature of wisdom, and allowed for an opportunity for intergenerational interaction. Rajan attended the dance group on Wednesday evenings, where he took part in old-time dancing, dessert, tea and conversation.

Rajan expressed that it was hard for him to put in words exactly what he had learned because, "How can you express the energy of dancing with a group of people who have felt, lived, loved and lost for six, seven or eight decades (with more than twenty people averaging sixty years of age – more than 1,200 years of collective life)? How can one convey the learning that occurs when you sense their acceptance and affirmation of that tremendous body of life experience?"

Rajan believes this experience gave him a new understanding of what wisdom means, expressing that "while great thinkers point towards the truth, actual wisdom can only be experienced and felt; as profound as the words on a page may be, it takes life to make them real." Through his CSL experience, Rajan was able to engage in a new kind of learning. Although able to learn things in a classroom, he recognized that he has a long way to go before he is able to "embody the wisdom of life's experience" as his senior dancing friends do." The time spent engaging in old-time dancing allowed Rajan to reflect on how "philosophical ideas function in the real world and see how true knowledge is acquired through lived experience."

Not only can the replacement cost of these items be significant, but police say that thieves may strike multiple times. Thieves may return, speculating that stolen items have been replaced but that security measures haven’t been upgraded. To make matters worse, burglars often find tools or ladders stored outside that they will use to get into your home.

The majority of thieves and vandals will choose the easiest, fastest, and most vulnerable targets. A few simple precautions can keep property safe and secure regardless of where it’s stored.

Locks that come with garage doors are often easily destroyed or pried open. Replace with a heavy-duty padlock, choosing one with an octagonal boron-carbide shackle and a heavy steel or laminated body.

For garages with overhead doors that roll up, install padlocks or bolts in the centre of the tracks, one-quarter inch above a roller with the door closed. This will prevent rollers from moving if the outer lock is tampered with.

Ensure that the connecting door between the garage and your house is always locked.

If you park in the driveway, don’t leave your garage door opener remote in the car. Replace large remotes with a small keychain version to carry with you.

Keep storage sheds locked to prevent theft and to avoid giving

thieves a place to hide. Secure bicycles, gas barbecues, lawn mowers, and snow blowers with a chain and padlock. Lock up tools, gardening implements, and ladders that thieves can use to break into your home.

Beware of a too-tall fence, while it provides privacy, it can also provide an opportunity for burglars to break in unseen and hide suspicious activity from neighbours and passersby.

Check for gaps where a thief could slide through or under.

Make sure your gate is strong and securely installed, and lock it with a weather resistant type padlock. Keep the padlock locked, even when your gate is open. Thieves have been known to replace an open padlock with their own lock, then return to rob you.

Not all padlocks are created equal and premium or specialty padlocks can better withstand threats from thieves or vandals.

Padlocks like Master Lock’s Magnum line are extra strong to resist multiple attempts at cutting or prying.

Choose a padlock with weather protection for outdoor use. Look for padlocks that secure freestanding items like bicycles, ATVs, motorcycles, barbecues, lawn mowers, and snowmobiles directly into the ground.

A padlock is only as good as the chain or hasp it’s fastened to. If thieves have no success violating the padlock, they will attempt to violate the hasp or chain. Double your protection with a high quality hasp or chain if required.

Women and money go together well

By Murray Green An evening just for women has been planned for the Monte Carlo Restaurant at 8 p.m. on Friday, June 15.

Kjeryn Davis, Anna Harder and Stephen Kambeitz came up with the idea and Monte Carlo partnered with them to provide the event location.

The night will include discussions about money and include jewelry displays along with a touch of wine, three of the favourite topics for organizer Kjeryn Davis of Investors Group. "We are holding a private event, the whole restaurant that night will be closed off for this event, to inform women how to handle finances. Women from all walks of life need to be savvy with their money. I have come across some couples where the man has taken care of all of the finances and then something happens to him and the wife is left not knowing how to handle finances," said Kjeryn. "Sometimes people are so paralyzed by it, they don't know what to do."

She wants to help educate women on finances, so they can become confident to handle them. "Women shouldn't be put into a position that they feel overwhelmed by the fear of not knowing what to do," said Kjeryn. "We are doing this to help people.

I wanted to take charge of my finances and now I want to help others do the same."

The proceeds will go to a good cause. "This will be a fundraiser for the women’s shelter, so a ticket in is just a donation. We don't have a set ticket price. It is whatever you can donate to the shelter."

Between short presentations, the idea is to have fun. "It's a girl’s night out to learn about some wines from around the world," added Kjeryn. "Find out what makes them so delicious and how to pair them perfectly for the next time you want to impress your guests. There will be appetizers and we will have a few guests to teach us how to be amazing with our money."

Displays from the Stella and Dot jewelry will be there with the commissions earned from sales going toward the women’s shelter. "That should add a little sparkle to our evening," joked Kjeryn.

Between the wine and food, people will become financially and legally savvy. Kjeryn from the Investors Group, Anna Harder from Anna Harder Certified General Accountant, Stephen Kambeitz from Farnham West Stolee and Jillian Carr from Great West Life will also give presentations.

Mucz book explores home-made remedies

Augustana professor Dr. Michael Mucz still remembers his mother's surefire remedy for easing the problem of a sore throat.

"She would give us a combination of butter and milk, the idea being that the butter would line the throat and soothe the irritation," said Mucz. "After that she would wrap a scarf around our neck and have us keep it on while we slept. I was skeptical about the idea but found that it helped because it elevated the temperature in the neck area and didn't allow the bacteria to function the way it normally would."

The remedy and many others used by Ukrainian pioneers to cure common ailments after they arrived in western Canada form the basis of a new 296page book by Dr. Mucz entitled Baba's Kitchen Medicines (University of Alberta Press). Far from an academic piece of work, it tells the stories of people who had no easy access to doctors and how they were able to pass those remedies on from one generation to the next. The result has, so far at least, been a warm reception from readers, who have been able to pick out stories they remember being told, or reconnect with grandparents about how life was in the past.

"I had one woman tell me how her two grandmothers would never talk about the old days because remembering the hardship was too hard for them," said Dr. Mucz, "but when they started reading it they began to laugh and make connections. In a way it brought the reality back to them."

Baba's Kitchen Medicines came out of a research project started by Dr. Mucz in 1992 on how Ukrainian pioneers used plants on their settlements.

"It was a broad project directed to me by the botanist at the provincial museum, who

had been a colleague of mine at graduate school," said Dr. Mucz.

"She thought it would be a perfect fit for me because I was a botanist and I could speak Ukrainian."

Dr. Mucz interviewed just under 200 people for the book and talked to several others.

Most of the interviews lasted an hour, although there were a few that went for two hours.

"I interviewed more women than men, because most of the men just didn't want to talk," said Dr. Mucz. "Women

were much more willing to be engaged and, traditionally speaking, they were the healers. They were the ones who had the healing knowledge and they would pass it on."

While women had the remedies, it was usually the men in the Ukrainian settlements who had served in the military in the Austro-Hungarian empire, who were the bone setters.

"Having been in the military they must have received some type of paramedical training," said Dr. Mucz. "The Ukrai-

nian people, who were very religious, believed it was a gift from God." Dr. Mucz found that many of the medicinal remedies that were used by the settlers came from ordinary vegetables that were grown in the garden, from weeds like dandelion, and from various berries. Puffball spores were collected in the fall and used as a type of antibiotic that could be used to apply to wounds, while fats from geese and pigs, and resin from spruce trees would be kept on hand to use as rubs or put on rashes or burns. Skin injuries and infections were treated with a poultice, a softened and moistened mass of herbs.

"The Ukrainians were reluctant to take advantage of invasive medical techniques," said Dr. Mucz, "so rather than amputate a finger that was infected and not healing well, they would put a poultice on it, and nine times out of ten it would work."

Other remedies involved commercial products, some of which were used in unorthodoxical ways. Sulfur, with molasses, for example, was seen as a great spring tonic, and a way of cleaning out the system.

"They shared quite a bit of information with each other," said Dr. Mucz. "With the exception of a few salves, nobody said this is my secret and you can't have it. They were more than willing to share everything they had with someone else who had nothing as well."

One of the most unusual practices Dr. Mucz came across was a wax pouring ceremony that was supposed to be effective in curing anxiety or sleeplessness. Practitioners – usually women – would pour melted wax three times, and "read" the so-called messages that the wax contained as a way of diagnosing the problem. By the

third pouring, the patient was supposed to be cured.

"It was a psychological thing but eighty per cent of the people I interviewed told me that they had it done to themselves or a family member, and reported it as being very effective said Dr. Mucz. "I talked to a nun in Edmonton to find out whether this was something the Church supported and she said it was. It wasn't that they were praying to spirits. They were praying to God and the Holy Mother."

Dr. Mucz has a disclaimer at the beginning of the book that the remedies should not be used today. In his research he discovered that wormwood, which was used by the pioneers for stomach ailments, is no longer considered to be a medicinal herb because it has very toxic properties that are harmful to the liver.

"It was very bitter," he said.

"They would make an infusion of it and then would basically take a tablespoon into a glass of hot water and drink it three times a day."

The old remedies began dying out, said Dr. Mucz, when the Ukrainian children went to school and became exposed to more conventional health practices.

"The kids didn't want to be teased because their mother had put a sock or scarf around their necks to cure a cold when other mothers gave their children a tablespoon of cough syrup."

Dr. Mucz still interviews seniors and is hopeful that someday he will be able to incorporate their stories in a future edition of the book. Anyone who has something to tell may contact him at 780-679-1173.

"I plan to go back to the nursing homes and interview the new crop of seniors and see what I can find," he said. "As I talk to people today I still hear things that I had never heard of before."

Number of vehicle collisions declined in 2011

The total number of vehicle collisions decreased by ten per cent to 684 in 2011 according to a traffic analysis released by Camrose Police Service.

Two of the collisions involved fatalities and 28 resulted in injuries.

Twenty-five resulted in property damage under $1,000, while 629 resulted in property damage over $1,000.

On-highway collisions for which traffic safety measures can be initiated decreased by four per cent, from 426 to 407.

The number of on-highway collisions was 459 in 2009 and 444 in 2008.

Hit and run collisions (reported) increased nine per cent, from 162 to 176. Pedestrian and bicycle collisions totalled six, compared to 11 in 2010.

Motorcycle collisions increased from one in 2010 to three in 2011.

Road conditions were noted as a factor in 58 per cent of the collisions in 2011, with the most common factor being slush, snow or ice. Weather conditions were

noted as a factor in 14 per cent of all collisions.

The analysis notes that 20 to 30 per cent of all collisions involve driver distraction.

"These contribute to the driver's ability to brake or avoid the collision."

Police laid charges in 179 of the 407 on-highway collisions.

January busiest month

Seventy-seven of the collisions occurred during the month of January, compared to 44 in March, 31 in November, 40 in December and 36 in September.

May and July tied as the months in which the fewest collisions (20) occurred.

The day with the highest number of collisions was Friday, with 69. Thursday was second, at 67, while Tuesday and Wednesday were tied at 61.

Sunday was the day of the week with the fewest number of collisions, at 35.

Forty-one collisions occurred between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m., while 36 occurred between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m.

Stunting, mechanical and

pedestrian violations, health, speeding and undue care were the most common cause of collisions, followed by following too closely, backing and going through a stop sign.

Top locations

The 48 Avenue and 68 Street intersection was the most dangerous in Camrose in 2011 with nine collisions, followed by the 51 Avenue and 46 Street intersection with six, the 48 Avenue and 73 Street intersection with four, the 54 Avenue and 53 Street intersection with four, and the 39 Street and Camrose Drive intersection with four.

"48 Avenue and 68 Street is an example of a well engineered intersection but due to high traffic volume it consistently ranks high in collision frequency," states the analysis.

The total number of collisions at intersections in Camrose in 2011 was 105, compared to 96 the year before.

Provincially, the three main causes for collisions are left turns across the path of an oncoming vehicle, stop sign violations or disobeying a traffic control device.

Who is involved?

Drivers in the 21 to 30 age category were the ones most likely to be involved in a collision.

"There were 125 collisions involving a male operator under 30 years of age," states the analysis. "This number remained consistent to 2010."

The number of collisions involving drivers over the age of 51 was 175.

CheckStops

Police laid five impaired driving charges as a result of a CheckStop program in which they checked 6,506 vehicles.

"While the CheckStop program is aimed at detecting impaired drivers in the act, a large component of the program is also aimed at educating the driving public of the dangers and consequences of drinking and driving," states the analysis.

"The intent of the program is to change public attitude toward drinking and driving, rather than to just obtain convictions.

The vast majority of people passing through our Checkstops complement us on what we are doing, which makes for a positive

interaction between police and the community."

The Camrose Police Service's Curb the Danger Program received 320 calls and resulted in 39 drivers being charged with impaired driving. An additional 17 people were given 24-hour suspensions.

"Impaired driving continues to be a problem in our community and our police service has dedicated itself to removing impaired drivers from our roads," states the analysis. "Public awareness through Curb the Danger and through the CheckStop program, as well as member initiated traffic stops, are key strategies in the fight against impaired driving."

The Camrose Police Service will continue to monitor speeds through photo radar and enforce the new distracted driving law, which came into effect in 2011.

"A reduction in speed lowers the amount of kinetic energy involved in a collision and therefore lowers the amount of property damage and the risk of being involved in a collision," states the analysis.

MONTHLY PROPERTY TAX PAYMENT PLAN How does it work?

The City of Camrose offers a Monthly Property Tax Payment Plan. Monthly payments on property taxes may be made by pre-authorized bank withdrawal on either the 1st or the 16th of each month. This program is based on a twelve month cycle beginning in January, however you may sign up for the Payment Plan at any time. If you are signing up after January, payment is required for earlier months, prior to commencing participation in the Monthly Property Tax Payment Plan.

TENDER CR-01-2012 Flagstaff County invites tenders for the crushing and stockpiling of gravel.

The work shall consist of crushing and stockpiling of approximately 330,000 tonne of 4:20 modified spec. gravel (95% material must pass through a 20,000 mm screen, 100% must pass through a 7/8” screen); 60,000 tonne of 2:16 modified spec. gravel; 5,000 tonne of 4:40 modified spec. gravel and 5,000 tonne of 6:80 spec. gravel at the Hinkey Pit (NW 17-44-09-W4). The stockpile (NE 17-44-09-W4) site is located approximately 1000 metres from the extraction area.

All bids are to be submitted on tender forms provided by Flagstaff County. These tenders will be available at the County Office in Sedgewick during regular working hours (8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.). Raise funds while watching movies

It doesn't get much better than this. You can raise money for a good cause while watching five great films during the Midnight Movie Marathon at Duggan Cinemas starting at midnight on Saturday, June 16, and ending mid-morning on Sunday.

Movie marathon participants will seek pledges from friends, family and businesses to raise funds for the Battle River Community Foundation (BRCF).

"We are grateful to be the beneficiary of this event that creates a good community spirit," said Blain Fowler, BRCF chair. The BRCF supports and donates to many charities and projects in Camrose and the surrounding area.

"We initiated the Midnight Movie Marathon promotion in Camrose as another opportunity for Magic Lantern Theatres to give something back to the community," said Gulshan Singh, marketing consultant of the theatre group that includes Duggan Cinemas in Camrose. "We pay for everything so all of the pledges that come in can go to charity through the Battle River Community Foundation. We were looking for a community charity and we feel the BRCF is a perfect fit for what we want to accomplish."

Although this is the first charity movie marathon for Camrose, the Midnight Movie Marathon project is in its eighth year in Toronto. "Each year, we have more participants and more funds raised because people are really getting into it," added Gulshan. "They love to come to the cinemas and bring their pillows and blankets. We have some diehard movie buffs who raise funds while having a lot of fun watching them."

Gulshan said helping the communities where they have cinemas is the goal of Magic Lantern Theatres. "We want the community to benefit and this is one way of doing that. We cover the costs of the entire operation, the movies, the staffing and the promotions, so that 100 per cent of the money raised can go towards charity," explained Gulshan. "It is like any other marathon. People need to seek pledges from others.

Church of God fine arts troupe to present its interpretation of Jesus Christ's parables June 3 On Sunday, June 3, the Camrose Church of God children's fine arts troupe will present its interpretation of some of Jesus Christ's parables as written in the New Testament.

The first presentation will take place during the worship service at 10:30 a.m., and will include Holy Communion. A second presentation of PARABLITZ will take place in a public concert at 1:30 p.m. The public is welcome to attend either of these presentations.

SEISMIC! will be portraying its adaptation of approximately 10 parables by means of drama, puppetry and music. Audience involvement will be a key component of the presentation as guests attempt to predict the scriptural origins and meanings of the stories.

Following the presentations, there will be opportunities to preregister children for SEISMIC! season two, beginning in the fall of 2012. SEISMIC! is offered to children aged 6-13, and meets once a week.

A parable is a short narrative that is told to help people understand certain principles and ways of living. This tool was used frequently by Jesus to help God's children learn about Him and His kingdom, and to illustrate moral ways of living. Storytelling appeals to people of all ages, and the symbolism and comparisons inherent in the principles help people comprehend God's wishes for humankind.

Scholars have identified over 40 parables in the New Testament, fulfilling a statement in the Old Testament, "I will open my mouth in parables. I will utter hidden things, things from of old – what we have heard and known, what our fathers have told us."
