Formed in 2006, Mannskor: Augustana’s Men’s Choir encourages men from the Augustana Campus and the Camrose community to explore the joy and comradery of choral singing. Opposition seniors' critic wants to end fears By Murray Green

Seniors in Alberta want access to an independent seniors’ advocate to work on their behalf and end the fear of retaliation. Family members often fear when bringing care concerns forward, Wildrose Official Opposition Seniors' Critic Kerry Towle said at Daysland's Providence Place on Feb. 25. "We need to have a priority in keeping senior couples together, keeping seniors in their home communities, so while they wait for long term care space, we should shore them up with support to allow them to stay at home with their spouse," said Kerry. "I heard that just now from this lady that her husband lives 40 miles away. It's divorce by nursing home." She understands that not all lodges can commit to several stages of health care. "There is this unfairness that when you hit advanced levels of care, you no longer stay married," added Kerry. "It's a long process to change and nothing is going to happen overnight. The first way to solve it, is to understand that seniors built this province. Now we need to prioritize seniors and their care. If we start this discussion with seniors and see what they need, and talk to them about what they want, that is how you start to make those decisions." Kerry is frustrated with the current bureaucracy. "The dollars need to hit the front line. One of the things we heard quite clearly was that seniors are able to stay at home longer, but they can't," explained Kerry. "They need help with a few things like getting in and out of a bath tub or need some meals cooked for them. That is what home care used to be about.

Now it is for only medical needs and it got away from home care. I'm a firm believer that if we invest in people, there are ways to go back to that." Kerry indicated that if the province had cared for people in their homes longer, places like Providence Place could have switched to a greater needs facility. "The government has to make it a priority that seniors come first. We have to make sure that those who can't afford services are still

getting the same level of service as everyone else," said Kerry. "Points West in Wainwright offers a level three and four service, but they keep couples together. They have a philosophy that the clients come first," continued Kerry. "The staff eats meals, visits with clients and helps with puzzles and that is not considered their break time. They are not punished for engaging with the clients." Kerry supports the idea of doctors going to lodges to see patients. "If they go into the lodges and see

their patients before they become long term care patients, maybe some treatments could be diagnosed earlier and it could save some time spent in those facilities," she said. "Your care should not depend on transportation. And, not everything has to be an institution." Several people have spoken about how they are afraid to speak up against Alberta Health Services for their loved ones due to fear of retaliation. Concerns have been raised

that medivac will be impacted by the routing of flights to the Edmonton International Airport and that it could cost lives. Seniors expressed satisfaction where food is served on site and would like to keep it that way. They favoured the idea of physician support for planning aging care and allowing couples to stay together while in long-term care. The province has money for health care. "First of all we have to stop the wasteful spending. Secondly, we have the money. Alberta set records for oil and gas revenues last year," explained Kerry. "We don't have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem." Seniors are supportive of Bill 208: the Seniors’ Advocate Act, which would create a permanent position for an advocate to work on seniors’ behalf. The position would be independent and report to the legislature to hold the government accountable for the services seniors receive. “Seniors and family members need to be able to speak up about the service they receive from Alberta Health Services and the government,” Towle said. “Meeting with seniors across northern Alberta has been a pleasure, and the generosity of drop-in centres and lodges has been tremendous. It’s clear there are great staff members who truly care about their clients and residents. I am looking forward to hearing the stories and concerns of seniors as I travel south.” Innisfail-Sylvan Lake MLA Towle met with seniors in Wainwright, Sedgewick and Daysland on Feb. 25.

Community members support Augustana achievements By Murray Green

The University of Alberta, Augustana Campus celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Community Awards Program, on Feb. 27. It was launched in 1973 to assist in making post-secondary studies possible for students with limited resources and to attract students. Andreassen Borth, Camrose Booster, Camrose Canadian and the Battle River Credit Union were honoured for being part of the project from the beginning. "We are celebrating 40 years of giving. Giving to students, giving to the community, giving forward to help students prepare for their future and giving back, as often times students receiving awards decide to establish one themselves," said Bree Urkow, development assistant at Augustana. Students can receive funding in three ways. Associated endowments were established to ensure the annual funding was in place in perpetuity. The fund itself is invested and the principal is never touched, only the interest is spent. In 2012, the interest earned from the Community Scholarship Endowment Fund and Associated Endowments allowed the university to fund awards totaling over $109,000 for about 110 students. In annual funded awards last year, another $65,000 was received to fund 90 awards to 85 students. Bursaries were established by donors who wish to fund a student primarily on the basis

of financial need. Bursaries may be funded annually or through establishing an endowment. In total, 320 students received a scholarship to help with the cost of their studies at Augustana through these programs. "This is an evening of celebration. We are celebrating the accomplishments of many of Augustana's brightest students," said Dean, Allen Berger. "We are also celebrating the generosity and commitment to post-secondary education by our scholarship donors. Students, don't ever forget the generous donors that helped make your education possible. I am pleased to report, that this is the envy of other faculties in the University of Alberta." Former student Craig Wilson, an award-winning CBS television producer, writer and editor was the Distinguished Alumni Award winner and guest speaker. In his speech he said "I noted a statement on the wall. It said big things happen on a small campus. It struck me that never were truer words said about this campus and this institution and the place you have chosen to be educated," said Craig. "Things have changed since I grew up here. They have changed in a big way and in a great way." Craig is often asked how someone from Western Canada ended up working for CBS news in New York City. "It's been a journey of many detours, starts and stops along the way. However,

it was a journey that began right here. My parents moved here in 1966," recalled Craig. His father Roy worked at the Camrose Lutheran College. His family moved away when Craig was five years old, but he returned for music camps and to graduate in 1989. Craig revisited the question. "It took hard work, lots of setbacks, support from family, friends, professors and luck," said Craig. "As people rise up the food chain, it

doesn't matter what profession they have chosen, people tend to forget that luck was on their side. Attending this institution shows that luck is on your side." He told the story of how the Norwegians built the college in 1910, not for them, but for their children and grandchildren. "It was for the community and for you. I am just one of the many like you, who benefitted from that sacrifice," added Craig. "Keep moving forward, just like you have been

doing. This institution was created for you. Now consider ways that you can serve others. Now go forth and advance your lives. It is great to be successful, but it is equally worthy to bring others with you, so that our communities and our world continue to be a better place for all of us. Don't bother telling the world you are ready, show it. Do it. It is through giving that you will receive."

not allowed to claim the caregiver amount as her spouse. Are there any other credits I can claim? A.We are sorry about your wife’s health. Starting in 2012, you should be eligible to claim the new $2,000 Family Caregiver Tax Credit which translates into about $300 in tax savings. The credit is meant to help provide a supplement to people who are caring for ailing relatives, including spouses or children. Your wife should also qualify for the Disability Tax Credit because of her condition. If she hasn’t claimed it before, her doctor should complete a T2201 Disability Tax Credit Certificate and send it to the Canada Revenue Agency for approval. If she is approved for the Disability Tax Credit, but cannot fully utilize it because her income is too low, she can transfer the unused portion to you. Q. I recently withdrew $10,000 from my RRSP under the Lifelong Learning Program, because I am planning to go back to school and finish my degree. Do I have to spend all the money on school or can it be used for other expenses? A: The Lifelong Learning Program allows you to borrow up to $20,000 from your RRSP to return to school full-time, or part-time if you have a disability. You do not have to account for how you spend the funds, but you are required to pay your RRSP back over a period of 10 years. If you do not repay the required amount each year, it will be included in income on your tax return. Q. I am a U.S. citizen living in Canada and I have about $20,000 in my RRSPs. Since my RRSPs are not taxable yet, do I need to send in a Foreign Bank Account Reporting form? A. In addition to the annual tax filing, U.S. citizens are required to complete the Foreign Bank Account Reporting (Form TDF90-22.1) for all accounts held outside of the U.S. that had an aggregate total of more than $10,000 USD in foreign financial institutions at any point during the year. Whether or not the accounts are taxable in Canada is not a factor. RRSPs are one of the accounts that can contribute to your aggregate total as well as savings accounts, GICs, TFSAs, deferred profit sharing plans, employee stock plans and others. If your RRSP was worth more than $10,000 in 2012, you need to complete the FBAR filing. The form is sent to the Department of Treasury in Detroit and must be received by the June 30 deadline.

Good samaritans did all they could at crash scene By Murray Green Camrose RCMP were dispatched to a fatal motor vehicle collision on Highway 21 near Township 472 at about 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 25. The City of Camrose Fire Department and EMS also attended the scene. After several vehicles drove by the accident, a snowplow operator and a good samaritan on his way to Provost finally stopped to help. "It was a bad, horrible accident and I don't want to get into details about that," said Nathan Wellicne, who was travelling from Edmonton to Provost where he works. "What was disturbing was the number of vehicles that just drove by without stopping before we arrived. They didn't even stop to see if this person needed help." The snowplow operator, who doesn't want to be named at this time, and Nathan performed CPR before emergency services (EMS) arrived, but were unable to revive the victim. "It pulls at my heart because I don't know exactly what happened to the individual. I don't know if he passed right away, or if more could have been done if someone had stopped sooner," Nathan added. "I know that I'm thankful to have taken my CPR training four times and I also know that we did everything we could to try and save this person." As a result of further RCMP investigation, it is believed that a silver two-door Honda Civic, driven by a lone male (aged 30 years) from Edmonton, was travelling northbound and lost control on the snow covered roadway. He collided head on with a south bound motor home and was killed instantly. The driver of the motor home was treated on scene and released by EMS. Nathan, still shaken by the experience, can't stop wondering if he or someone arriving on scene sooner might have changed things. "The first few minutes after the accident can make a difference. To see a life like that lost is disgusting if it could have been prevented. People should stop to help because what if it was them that needed the help. It could be a friend or relative of yours that might need help," said Nathan. The snowplow operator, who was on scene first, went to check for a pulse and then came back for help when Nathan rushed in to volunteer. "I took the CPR course because it was part of my job training to work in the oil patch. Then every two or three years I take it again to be recertified," he stated. "You are never comfortable using it, but I was comfortable enough to help. I can't put a value or price on how important it is to take the course. The knowledge is so important to have." Road conditions were a contributing factor, even though the snowplows were out in full force. The driver's name is being withheld pending next of kin notification. The RCMP officer told the

If you ever wanted to get paid for watching movies, this is your big chance. You can raise money for a good cause while watching five great films during the Midnight Movie Marathon at Duggan Cinemas starting at about midnight on Saturday, March 23, and ending mid-morning on Sunday. Movie marathon participants will seek pledges from friends, family and businesses to raise funds for the Battle River Community Foundation (BRCF). "We are grateful to be the beneficiary of this event that creates good community spirit," said Karin Naslund, BRCF director. "We see this as a great way to have the entire community involved, especially younger people who can stay up all night." The BRCF supports and donates to many charities and projects in Camrose and the surrounding area. "I would like to see youth involved more and giving back to the community earlier on in life. This is a great way for them to get involved and see the benefits of the funds going back into projects, not only in Camrose, but the Battle River catchment area." Augustana students and the Camrose Boys and Girls Club are going to be participating in the event. "Members of the Boys and Girls Club are going to be making their van available for pick-ups. They are willing to stop at Augustana and pick up students at the university as well," explained Karin. People are starting to get excited about this event. "The Midnight Movie Marathon promotion was started in Camrose as an opportunity for Magic Lantern Theatres to give something back to the community as well," said Shelly Kucway, manager of Duggan Cinemas in Camrose. "This is a great way to give to one organization that in turn helps a variety of groups in the area. We supply the films, some sandwiches and drinks, so all of the pledges that come in can go to charity through the Battle River Community Foundation. Our concession will also be open for snacks because people are not allowed to bring food into the theatre." This is the second charity Midnight Movie Marathon for Camrose. "Last year it was held on a busy weekend in June. We decided to move it into March, so it doesn't interfere with the Relay for Life or university exams and

hopefully more people can come out," added Shelly. The Midnight Movie Marathon project is in its ninth year in Toronto. "Each year, we want to have more participants so more funds are raised because people want to help the entire community," added Shelly. "People love to come to the cinemas and bring their pillows and blankets." Shelly said helping the communities that have cinemas is the goal of Magic Lantern Theatres. "We want the community to benefit and this is one way of doing that. We cover the costs of the entire operation, the movies, the staffing and the promotions, so that 100 per cent of the money raised can go towards charity," explained Shelly. "It is like any other marathon. People need to seek pledges from others. The minimum pledge per person is $20." However, if people donate $25 or more, the BRCF will issue a tax deductible receipt. The movie marathon has caught on in the rest of Canada. "It is a great way to spend the night. Instead of running a marathon to raise funds, people can relax and enjoy movies. We think it is a good idea and the perfect deal," said Shelly. "We will have different prize levels to earn door prizes. Our grand prize is two tickets every weekend to see shows and is valued at $1,200. We make the marathon participation as lively as possible with games between shows to keep everyone awake." The movies shown in Camrose will be announced closer to the marathon date. A surprise movie selected from the current attractions playing at Duggan Cinemas will wrap up the event. "It is a very exciting event and it is lots of fun. I want people from Camrose to have fun with this and support the Battle River Community Foundation," said Shelly. "It is a long night, but we want to make it fun." Participants must be 14 years of age or older and register prior to the marathon from 10:30 to 11:30 p.m. on March 23. Augustana women's hoop team, curlers garner medals By Murray Green

The Augustana Vikings hockey team needed an overtime period, but they eliminated the Grant MacEwan Griffins in two straight games to advance to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference semifinals. The Griffins scored the only goal of the opening period on a penalty shot. From then on, the Vikings dominated the contest by scoring two tallies in the second and adding three more in the third for a 5-1 victory in the EnCana Arena on Feb. 22. Adam Johnson, Kenny Bradley, Scott Aucoin, Quinn Amiel and Dan Hope each notched single markers for the Vikings. Goalie Joel Danyluk stopped 25 of the 26 shots directed his way in the Augustana net. Augustana led the Griffins 4-2 after 40 minutes in Edmonton, but the Griffins fought back to tie the game in the third to force an extra period. However, Aucion garnered the game and series winner nearly five minutes into overtime for a 5-4 win. Other goals were scored by Hope, Dean Prpick, Casey Rempel and Dane Bonish. Aucoin, Rempel and Bonish all collected two points on the night, Feb. 23. Danyluk turned away 18 of the 22 shots he faced in the victory to end the first round series. The Vikings will be hosting game four of the SAIT series, if necessary, on March 9 at 7:30 p.m., in the EnCana Arena. While the women's Augustana Vikings basketball team had a bye weekend before hosting the finals on Feb. 28 to

March 2, the men's squad hosted the first round of playoffs in Camrose on Feb. 22 and 23. The Vikings qualified for the next round by edging the Medicine Hat Rattlers 72-69. Lee Danderfer led the offence with 20 points and David Shantz chipped in with 15. The victory earned the Vikings a trip to Fort McMurray for the finals on March 1 to 3. They played the Briercrest Clippers in the first game. In a seeding game for playoffs, Augustana led 22-15 after the first quarter against NAIT, but backed off to lose 86-69. Michael Swampy scored 18 points and Shantz added 14 to lead the Vikings in scoring, Feb. 23. The more things change, the more they stay the same. That saying was true for both the mixed and men's curling teams at provincials in Olds on Feb. 22 to 24. In the mixed division, Augustana successfully defended the ACAC championship by edging Lakeland 4-3 in the final game in Olds, Feb. 24. It marked the third straight year the mixed team has captured the title. The Vikings broke the 3-3 deadlock in the eighth end after four straight blank ends. Earlier in the bonspiel, Lakeland out- scored the Vikings 9-8 in a wild match. Augustana shut out the host Olds rink 8-0 in the semifinals to reach the gold medal game. The Augustana men's team dropped a 7-3 decision in the final to collect the silver medals for the second year in a row. NAIT won the championship game. The Vikings beat Grant MacEwan 6-4 in the semifinals.

CCHS basketball teams ready to roll for playoffs By Murray Green

Murray Green, Camrose Booster The Stettler Wildcats were met by a tough Camrose Composite High School Trojans' defence during a regular season game in Camrose. CCHS is unbeaten in league play and will be hosting playoffs games as they make a run towards advancing to the 3A provincial tournament.

The Camrose Composite High School Trojans basketball teams are eagerly awaiting the end of the regular season, so they can advance to the playoffs. The senior girls are unbeaten in league play and 19-2 overall. "We lost to St. Albert early in the year at the Boston Pizza Classic and lost to Athabasca at the beginning of January," said coach Andy Lyster. "We went to the Lindsay Thurber (Red Deer) tournament and we won it against all 4A schools." Camrose is a 3A school. Coach Lyster was worried early in the season about having only eight girls on the team. "However, knowing that they can all play, it makes it easier for me. It is just tough in practices when you don't have the players to have a proper scrimmage. The good thing is that the players practically coach themselves," said coach Lyster. "The team has improved since we lost those games." Other teams try to outrun the Trojans when they see only eight players dressed. "They haven't been able to do that because every one of the girls is a good athlete. Passing and transition are our strength. We can go from offence to defence just like that," added coach Lyster. CCHS went to Wetaskiwin's tournament on Feb. 22 and 23 to face some of the top teams in the province. "We are ranked fifth right now, but if we could beat a

team above us, it would certainly help us." Coach Lyster would like his team to finish first in league play to gain home court advantage in the playoffs. "It looks like we and Wetaskiwin should be in the final for zones and that lines up good for us. However, a lot of things can happen before then." A home game for zone playoffs for both girls and boys will likely be on March 4. The boys are in second place, behind Wetaskiwin. "We are healthy again. We were unhealthy for most of January and into February, but everyone is back now and things are looking good," said coach James Saby. "We lost a tough one in Wetaskiwin last week. We were up by five with two minutes left. We missed an open layup and turned the ball over. It wasn't a great way to end the game." CCHS beat Holy Trinity in a double overtime match to restore the late game confidence factor. "We are trying to tighten up the defence and work on getting tougher when battled for balls. We are also working on spreading the offence around a little more," explained coach Saby. "We are giving up some penetration, so we are working on some drills to improve that. We want to fill some of those holes." The Trojans beat the Stettler Wildcats on Feb. 19 to put them in the playoff picture for league play. Last year, CCHS went all the way to capture the 3A provincial title.

Brian was predeceased by his mother Iris, and son Mark. He leaves friends and relatives around the province to mourn his passing. Brian was born in Daysland and from there made homes in various parts of the province, working in Fort McMurray, Edmonton and Red Deer in his earlier days of equipment operating, farming with his family in Daysland, and spending considerable time in Minburn where he ran the Bald Eagle Inn. Brian’s adventures took him to Valleyview where he farmed and raised a menagerie of animals from wild boars to exotic pheasants. He tried his hand at a number of small businesses in Central Alberta before settling in Vegreville and returning to equipment operating. He will be remembered as a man who was always willing to help a friend. Florence Ringwall Florence Ringwall was born on April 6, 1925 in Three Hills, Alberta. She was raised in the Rocky Mountain House area. Florence joined the WAC in 1943. After the war, she lived in Edmonton and, on November 12, 1948, she married Stanley Ringwall. They farmed southwest of New Norway. In 1962, they moved into the village of New Norway until her health declined. In February 2012, she moved into Faith House in Camrose, then to Bashaw Lodge for about four months. She is survived by one son Gordon (Corinne); grandsons Rick and Thomas (Natalie); and greatgrandsons Oliver and Eli. Florence was predeceased by her husband Stanley; parents Charles and Frances Hulme; and brother George. A private Graveside Service will take place in the New Norway Cemetery. Paul Klassen of Viking, AB (formerly of Camrose, AB) passed away peacefully on February 23, 2013 with his family at his side. Born in Herbert, SK, Paul grew up with a deep love of horses, music and poetry. He committed many poems to memory, and amazed many by his recitals of Robert Service, his favorite being “The Cremation of Sam McGee.” The people he loved and those who loved him were numerous and as varied as his large capacity for life. Grettum steps down as BRCF executive director

Executive director Kerry Grettum is retiring from the Battle River Community Foundation after four years of dedicated service. During the years that Kerry has been with the Foundation, he has seen assets grow from $3.9 to $6.8 million. In the last couple of years, Kerry's main focus has been on granting. In the last cycle, 115 grants were approved, delivering about $230,000 to worthwhile projects in communities served by the Foundation. "It is satisfying when people walk in here and say they want to create a fund. You have no idea what seed you plant when you talk to people," said Kerry. "The community fund and donor advised endowments allow people to direct where their money is going." Kerry has found it very gratifying to be able to assist generous individuals fulfill their philanthropic wishes. His wife Dora has also retired. "She is from PEI and I'm from Camrose. Dora was a nurse in the Navy and I was in the Air Force and we met in Germany. The odds of us meeting weren't great, but we have had a pretty good life together and it's time to enjoy it more." They look forward to spending more time in their motorhome and a European trip may also be in the future. Kerry has made a big impact to the BRCF. "It has been a pleasure for myself and the other members of the board to work with Kerry during his years as

executive director of the Foundation," said chair Blain Fowler. "We have come to know and respect him as a true gentleman in every sense of the word. We wish him and his wife Dora many years of peace and happiness as they enjoy their well-earned retirement." The Battle River Community Foundation exists to help generous individuals and organizations make a difference in the communities of the Battle River area. The Foundation provides a simple, powerful and highly personal approach to giving. Funds donated are invested and net earnings are distributed annually in accordance with the wishes of the donors. Donors may choose between a variety of types of funds, depending on which of these will best serve the causes that are closest to their hearts. Since launched less than 20 years ago, the BRCF has accumulated $6.8 million in endowments, while distributing $1.7 million to worthwhile projects throughout the area served. While major contributions are received from time to time, the strength of the Foundation is based on hundreds of modest gifts from thoughtful individuals, who wish to give something back to a community that has been good to them. Romance scams will only break your heart By Murray Green Don't get caught following your heart instead of common sense. March is fraud prevention month and it reminds us not to look for love in the wrong places. One of the most expensive crimes endured by millions of Canadian consumers every year is fraud. In the case of romance scams, fraudsters take advantage of those looking for love to steal their hearts and their money. Scammers target singles of

any age through social networking, online classifieds or dating websites. In most cases, the scammers create fake profiles to entice people to fall in love. Once you are hooked, they try to convince their victims to give them money. That’s why law enforcement (such as the Camrose Police Service), government agencies and other consumer organizations are working diligently to detect and disrupt fraud. While romance scams may be the latest trend in fraud, other scams

have been around for years and are simply tweaked over time to reflect current trends. Even savvy online consumers can find it hard to distinguish a fake profile or product from the real thing. To increase awareness, law enforcement, government agencies and other community organizations have formed Fraud Prevention Alberta. Partners include the Better Business Bureau, Service Alberta, Alberta Justice and Solicitor General, Seniors and Community Sup-

Sorensons grateful for blessings after Cambodia trip By Dan Jensen

Marlys Sorenson and her son, Jesse, have had a greater sense of how fortunate they are since returning from a two-week mission trip to Cambodia in January. "The people there have lost so much," said Sorenson. "There aren't very many who haven't been touched in some way by the war that happened there 35 years ago." The Sorensons spent most of their time assisting the New Life Fellowship of Cambodia Church in the Cambodia capital of Phnom Penh. "We went to a school that is run by the church, saw its children's programs in the slums and the dumps, and visited a number of surrounding villages," said Marlys. "We were able to interact with the kids through songs, puppet shows, dance and sports. The Sorensons also spent time visiting with university students in a dormitory operated by the church. "We had the opportunity to visit with them and encourage them," said Marlys. "Jesse was able to play in a band during a youth event. The English class students were so grateful for any opportunity they had to practice English with us. They see English as a way up and a way out, and feel if they can learn English they can have a better chance at life." One of the highlights of the trip for Marlys was visiting Place of Rescue, a home just outside Phnom Penh for about 120 children who have been orphaned due to sickness and AIDS, as well as grannies and families who are living with AIDS. "It wasn't originally on our schedule but our leader had been there on a previous trip and she felt it was important that we see it," said Marlys. "We played with the kids and talked with the director, Marie Ens, who I had met when she came to Century Meadows Baptist Church last October with a group of dancers from the orphanage. Visiting this love-filled happy hope was a highlight for most everyone on our team." Marlys, who had volunteered with YWAM (Youth with a Mission) in Kona, Hawaii, five dif-

ferent times, felt that going to Cambodia, a third world country, would serve to challenge and stretch her while allowing her to grow in her Christian faith. To prepare for her trip she started researching Cambodia by picking up books and talking to friends who she knew had Cambodian connections. "The custodian at our church and his wife, Thai Phong and Sarane Trieu, spent time in Phnom Penh during the war before going to refugee camps in Thailand, so they were excited when they heard that Jesse and I were going," said Marlys. Cambodia was ruled from 1975 to 1979 by the Pol Pot led Khmer Rouge, an offshoot of the Vietnam People's Army from North Vietnam remembered primarily for its policy of social engineering, which resulted in genocide. Its attempts at agricultural reform led to widespread famine, while its insistence on absolute self-sufficiency, even in the supply of medicine, led to the deaths of thousands from treatable diseases such as malaria. The Khmer Rouge regime arrested and eventually executed almost everyone suspected of connections with the former government or with foreign governments, as well as professionals and intellectuals. Researcher Craig Etcheson, of the Documentation Centre of Cambodia, suggests that the death toll was between two and two and a half million. "We visited the prison and the killing fields and got a sense of the turmoil and tragedy that country has been through," said Marlys. "We could see many dugouts where the bodies had been buried and we were able to visit a memorial which has skulls on each of its 17 levels, all labelled by age. I couldn't allow myself to think about it so much when I was there, but since I have been back home I have been reading about what went on. It is so crushing to think that a people in a country can destroy their own people like that. I know if I had lived there at the time I would have been killed because I have an education. I would have been killed because I wear glasses, since wearing glasses showed

that you had a little bit of wealth or education." Today, Cambodia is a stable but poor country with an approximate population of 14.8 million. After years of isolation, the warravaged nation was reunited under the monarchy in 1993 and has seen rapid progress in the economic and human resource areas while rebuilding from decades of civil war. It has had one of the best economic records in Asia, with economic growth averaging six per cent for the last 10 years. "The people that are working there, who we talked to, are quite industrious," said Marlys. "They work hard at whatever they do, whether it is sweeping the sidewalk in front of their little stores or painting a wall. They are happy for the freedom they have now and any help they can get." Marlys was touched by how grateful the people of Cambodia are for everything they are given and for the perseverance they have shown throughout all the bad times. "The spirit they have to go on after having lost so much is an example all of us can follow," said Marlys. "They take the best of what has happened to them and they go from there. They want to look forward and not always dwell on the past." Marlys said as a result of the trials they have been through a lot of the Cambodians have turned to Christianity. "They now have hope for what is ahead that they want to share with others. They are open to God's love and are very kind." The Sorensons and other members of the mission team stayed in a hotel near a place called Olympic Stadium, where the people of Phnom Penh went every morning, at 5:45, to do aerobic exercises. "It was on a street where there was a lot of recycling happening, and was constantly filled with trucks loaded with cardboard. The hotel was very clean and we were able to eat at many Asian restaurants, including some run by non government organizations that are giving gainful employment to young girls who have come out of sex trafficking, a big problem in Cambodia."

City of Camrose working on new economic development brand By Dan Jensen

The City of Camrose has identified the development of economic branding as the key first step in a new wayfinding system. City of Camrose economic development officer Ray Telford told City council Feb. 19 that branding of a city has to be done before wayfinding signage can be designed. "Branding needs to be done first," said Telford, "so that the signage will be associated with the branding and the signage is consistent." Information that has been presented to the City through meetings and workshops has shown that a community's brand resides in the hearts and minds of customers, clients and prospects. "It is the sum total of their experiences and perceptions,

some of which you can influence and some that you cannot," said City economic development and communications assistant Sara Walkey-Chittick. "Branding identifies the uniqueness of a destination. Branding is the art of setting yourself apart from everyone else and making you the destination of choice for investment, business opportunities and the place to live and visit." Telford said the City will be contracting a professional who, with the assistance of a wayfinding task force including members of City council, administration, and representatives from the Camrose Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Camrose, will develop a plan that includes vehicular wayfinding throughout the city, pedestrian wayfinding, pole banners, marquee signs for

public facilities and amenities, and gateways for the different districts. "We do have a lot of good opinions and good items but we need a special wayfinding person." Telford feels the wayfinding signage that will develop from the branding will help educate Camrose residents and visitors on what Camrose has, deliver a "please visitor" experience, help mitigate traffic flow, create a sense of place and arrival, and eliminate clutter and broken systems. "The key to having good signage is making it easy to read." City councillor Daryl Shillington said he is thrilled to be getting to the next level with branding and wayfinding signage in Camrose.

"Over the years the Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Camrose and Economic Development have been trying to find an image or slogan or something for Camrose. I think we are at a level now with our population that we need to have a positive and consistent image." Councillor Max Lindstrand suggested that it would be good to have members of the community involved on the task force. "We have community representatives on a lot of our other communities. I think we could get more buy-in on this if we had more community engagement." Councillor John Howard cautioned against letting the task force get too big. "I would want to ensure that the task force interviews

the stakeholders but I am not sure every stakeholder has to be on the task force. We have been this long with a committee and been able to get this far. If we make a committee of 50 you and I will be in our graves and they will be putting sign markers on us before they put sign markers anywhere else." Councillor Earle Berry suggested the City try to take advantage of the resources of Boomtown Trail when developing a branding. Mayor Marshall Chalmers said it is important to consider in discussions the CRE, which has indicated it would like Camrose to be known as the home of Big Valley Jamboree. The City of Camrose capital plan includes a budgeted amount of $100,000 for wayfinding signage in each of 2014, 2015 and 2016.

The Alberta Surface Rights Federation's annual meeting at the Norsemen Inn in Camrose on March 8 will feature three guest speakers. Farmers Advocate lawyer Peter Dobbie and property rights advocate Lee Cutforth will be making presentations on property issues, while MLA Joe Anglin will explain power line and electric wind turbine topics. "We have members with concerns about property rights, so we decided to bring in two experts to answer some questions," said ASRF executive secretary Tom Nahirniak.

Wildrose MLA Anglin will be informing the members about the power line upgrades across the province and what impact electric wind turbines will have in the future. Dufresne displays art work at county office By Murray Green

Local artist Jason Dufresne will be displaying about 20 pieces of abstract art at the Camrose County during an art gala on Saturday, March 9. "I just returned from the Banff Centre where I was on scholarship for seven weeks. ALL (the Association of Lifewide Living) decided to sponsor an exhibition to promote its mission statement of supporting and inspiring creativity," said Jason. "It's nice that they are doing it because it is not only good for me, but for ALL and the broader community as well." Battle River Countrypresents What Colour is the Present will consist three events. "There will be a round table discussion in the morning from 10 a.m. to noon and interactions with the art and the artist in the afternoon from 2 to 5 p.m. and then a gala in the evening from 7 to 10 p.m.," explained Jason. "My art will be on display in the county chamber meeting room and I will be there to answer questions people may have about my work." Coffee and cinnamon buns start the morning of exploration of innovation, nurture, mentorship with interesting, knowledgeable people. In the afternoon, join the What’s New: Exploration of art forms and meaning. The evening gala will feature the art, local leaders, local musicians and refreshments. "I have been creating abstracts for about 15 to 20 years. They are pretty graphic and have a strain of simplicity that runs through them," said Jason. "I have different kinds of work to display and they are from 2002 right up to 2013." Although Jason is from Camrose, he has taught in South Korea for the last years. "I'm home on holidays right now. I teach mostly English as a second language and some art," shared Jason. "Children go to school six days a week and start at 8 a.m. and often go until 10 p.m. They have school during the day and after school academy programs in the evening. The county went from third world to first in around 50 years, so they are serious about learning." Sometimes Jason mixes learning language and art. "I take text and use it as a subject. I tend to obscure the text so it is not legible. My ideas started before I moved to South Korea, but they have been reinforced by being over there," said Jason. Home Program provides education, funding By Murray Green

The word is getting out on the best kept secret in Alberta. The Home Program offers free education about how to buy a house, and then it gives you money on top of it. The successful program is in its third year in Camrose of helping local people to learn about all of the aspects of purchasing a home. Realtor Glenda Rott, of Coldwell Banker Battle River Realty, is organizing the program that has already helped close to 50 residents. "We had about 25 people take the five-hour workshop last year and four people took advantage of the financial assistance," she explained. "People don't have to buy right away. I was told that someone just bought their first property after taking the program 10 years ago. The funds are held for them until they are ready to buy." The Home Program helps buyers by providing them with all the information they need to make the right decision with buying a home. "The five hours of free education are worth the time, even if they don't take advantage of the funds," Glenda said. "This program is ideal for anyone who is thinking about purchasing a home in the future." The workshops will be held at the Ramada Inn and Suites (470273 Street) on March 13 and 20 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Attendance at both sessions is required to be eligible for financial assistance. The program was originally developed to help low and moderate income buyers, but has expanded over the years to include anyone interested in purchasing their own home. "In the mortgage portion, the difference between open and closed, fixed versus variable, and whether to go with a bank or mortgage broker, are all explained," added Glenda. Glenda will talk about finding the right home for you. "Buyers need to think about what suits their needs. The realtor part of the course will cover the differences between renting and buying, condos versus houses, and what is the best resale value," Glenda said. "You want to shop in the right price range to make it comfortable for making payments." The workshop is free and the education is priceless. "People sign up for the course, attend the workshop, participate in the program with the realtor, and then they qualify for $1,000 to $3,000 of assistance," said Glenda, explaining the process to receive assistance. A lawyer from Farnham West Stolee, Byron Boyd of Boydette Home Inspections, Joanne Wilton of RBC Royal Bank, Dave Wolsey of Wise Mortgage and Glenda will be providing the information at the workshop. Mayor declares rodeo week in Camrose By Murray Green

The Camrose Spring Classic Pro Rodeo is a special event for the area from March 15 to 17. Mayor Marshall Chalmers declared that March 11 to 17 will be rodeo week in the city as the community hosts the first major rodeo event of the new season. "This is our 25th anniversary, so we are going to be having some special events taking place," said rodeo chair Ken Hildebrandt. The Camrose Regional Exhibition will be the home of three performance times. On Friday and Saturday the action begins at 7 p.m. and on Sunday the action begins at 2 p.m. The regular main events are returning to get the crowd excited. Not all of the fun will be in the centre of the ring. "We have a dance planned for Saturday night. The band Domino, from the Stettler area, is back by popular demand.
