The goal is to surpass last year’s incredible performance of raising more than $24,000. The money raised this year in the walk and a silent auction, which will make its debut this year, will help provide a safe and supportive place for women and children who find it necessary to leave abusive situations at home. Last year nearly 400 women and children accessed the services of Camrose Women’s Shelter. Each of the volunteer men who will take to the walking/running track at the Edgeworth Centre will be backed by generous sponsors and pledges. Railway Station challenge Submitted

Are you a promoter of our beautiful city? We would like to challenge neighbors to help us identify gardens that could possibly be viewed by people at our Victorian Tea and Garden Tour event on July 13. These gardens could be in the city, or in the surrounding area. In 2012, 52 people attended the day with many people from out of town. We have in the past visited four gardens and would like to increase the number this year. This event not only promotes tourism but gives our local gardeners new ideas. The Camrose Historic Station and Park has commenced building a Victory Garden which will be developed using organic gardening techniques. The original Victory Garden during World War II was located just west of the Station. This will be partially developed by July. If you know of anyone that has a lovely garden, or you are willing to show your garden, please let us know and we will contact the person you have identified or yourself with more details. As part of the year-long Living Your Best Life with Cancer and Beyond Workshop Series in partnership with Calgary Wellspring, the Camrose Primary Care Network is offering a Healing Journey Workshop on Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Edgeworth Centre. The afternoon workshop, which will run from 1 to 4 p.m., is designed for people living with cancer, their families and significant caregivers. The Healing Journey workshop is designed to guide and support people who want to actively engage in their own process of healing. The workshop will offer simple, effective tools and strategies that, when mindfully practiced, support healing, harmony and inner peace. The Healing Journey is unique to each individual and this program provides a safe and sacred space for members to explore, share, question, listen and just simply be. Participants are guided toward self-awareness and stress management with such powerful and effective tools as journaling, imagery, thought watching, goal setting, and meditative techniques. At every stage of the journey, participants are encouraged, supported and accepted. Sights are set on healing and the focus is deeply rooted in choice and possibility. Research indicates that people who have cancer, or other serious chronic disease, benefit immensely when they belong to a group of like-minded people and engage in a physiological process of helping themselves. Published results include diminished anxiety and depression, a restored sense of control, and relief of symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, and pain. Consistently it is reported that as participants move through the profound spectrum of personal reflection and self-expression they experience deep fulfillment and measurable healing. A two-day sanitation and hygiene course offered by Alberta Health Services Environmental Public Health to individuals seeking provincial certification in safe food handling will be held at the Norsemen Inn Jan.15 and 22. The course helps food handlers to understand the potential health risks associated with food-borne illnesses, and outlines the steps they need to take to reduce those risks. A provincial safe food handling certificate will be issued at the end of the course. Ecole Sifton Grade 5 French Immersion student Aiden Schultze has another Nintendo DS machine to add to his growing collection. Schultze won the machine through his participation in the ATCO Gas and ATCO Electric sponsored Fire Prevention Week children's contest. Students from across Alberta entered the contest by completing the Fire Safety Starts with You activity book and submitting it through their teacher to the Government of Alberta's Office of the Fire Commissioner. More than 230,000 activity books were distributed this year, helping to teach early elementary students important life-saving steps they can take to protect themselves and their homes from fire. Schultze was the winner from the central Alberta zone. The grand prize of a home computer system donated by ATCO Gas and ATCO Electric was won by a six-year-old student in Grande Prairie. Schultze's teacher, Danielle Cunnings, received an Apple iPad mini. Fire Prevention Week is held every October to remind Albertans of the steps they can take to prevent fires and remind them about what they should do in an emergency. The emphasis of this year's Fire Prevention Week was on having two ways out. The Nintendo and the iPad mini were presented by Alberta Fire Rescue Officer Don Rosland, who encouraged Ecole Sifton students during a special school assembly Dec. 18 to practice their home escape routes. "Just like you do fire drills at school, you should be doing the same thing at home." Rosland praised the teachers at Ecole Sifton for demonstrating all types of safety throughout the year. Ferintosh residents experience water problems By Dan Jensen

The residents of Ferintosh will be in the market for new water filters for their fridges and reverse osmosis systems in 2013. "They're basically 'done for' because they are so polluted," said resident Alix Baker-Aziz. "It's going to be another expense on top of the bottled water we have been having to use." The residents have been having coloured and sediment-filled water coming through their taps since Christmas Eve. The problem has been so bad the owner of Ferintosh Manor Bed and Breakfast, Bert Heacock, had to turn away potential lodgers. "I can shower in the water but I wouldn't allow that with my guests," said Heacock. Tests have shown that while the water has a high level of turbidity (particles), it is safe to drink. "It is ugly but it is bacteriologically safe," said village administrator Patrick Risk.

Small Town Saturday Night back in 2013 By Murray Green

Back by popular demand, the Big Valley Jamboree and Travel Alberta organizations decided to bring host Small Town Saturday Night again this year. Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation minister Christine Cusanelli will be launching the details of the event with Bruce Okabe of Travel Alberta and Big Valley Jamboree representatives on Jan. 9. Travel Alberta and Big Valley Jamboree are continuing to build on the success of last year’s Small Town Saturday Night contest by once again giving Alberta’s most creative and enthusiastic small towns the opportunity to win a one-day country music extravaganza in their community. Small Town Saturday Night 2013 will feature a line-up of Canada’s finest country music entertainers, including headliner Chad Brownlee. In addition, Alberta’s Clayton Bellamy will host a songwriters' circle. The competition to host the event is open to small towns in Alberta with a population of under 20,000 people. The assurance isn't enough for Baker-Aziz. "I have kidney cancer and I only have one kidney left, so I am concerned about it affecting my health," said Baker-Aziz. "The water looks like something you would see in a third world country. You put soap in the water but it doesn't sud up." The water in Ferintosh is purchased from the Highway 12-21 Water Commission and piped from high quality wells in Bashaw. "The water leaving Bashaw is very very low in turbidity but by the time it gets here, it has a high rate of turbidity," said Risk. The problem could be related somehow, according to Risk, to the extension of the water line from Ferintosh to New Norway. "I am told that in order to test a line such as that they need to boost up the pressure in order to get the water through. We

think that the increased pressure has stirred up sediment in the line and minerals in the pipe." The village has been draining the fire hydrants and taps in order to clear out the bad water and is hoping to have the quality back to an acceptable quality this week. "The public works foreman, who is also a small water systems operator, has been the key man in all of this," said Risk. "He has been testing as per Alberta Environment's instructions every three hours. The water has never failed the bacteriological tests. If it had we would have been required to put out a bottled water advisory." Risk discounted any suggestions that the village could have done something to prevent the problem from happening in the first place. "People here are up in arms about the water but we didn't do anything wrong," he said. "The

village is in the same position as everyone else." Risk said if the problem is in fact related to testing of the line the village should have been given some kind of warning ahead of time. "We could have, with 24 hours notice, filled up our reservoir and said ok, we now have three days worth of water, go and do whatever you need to do, but that opportunity was never provided to us." Risk said it is hard to convince residents to use more water so that the system can be flushed out faster because of the cost attached to usage. "We can't tell everybody to use up all their water because we don't have our own water source and we pay for every cube of water we use. We can't really tell people to run their taps for 24 hours because their water metre is going to record that." Heacock said he is not concerned so much with the quality

of the water in Ferintosh as with the way village administration has handled the problem. He noted it was he and Baker-Aziz who contacted the health department in the first place, not the village. "The health department, when I first called, said they had not been notified by the village." Heacock also expressed concern about the time it took for the village to respond to residents' inquiries. "I called them, I left messages and I sent emails and they wouldn't respond. They finally, after about four or five days, put a note on the door of the rec centre or the town office, but there are a lot of people, including seniors who don't go down there. People were calling me because I am the big business in Ferintosh. Everyone is very angry at this moment because there was no communication."

Fowler honoured with Diamond Jubilee Medal By Dan Jensen

Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Verlyn Olson presented the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal to Berdie Fowler. "I nominated her because she immediately came to mind as a great community builder in the Wetaskiwin-Camrose constituency," said Olson. "She has a impressive record of supporting all kinds of community undertakings and is just a great role model in so many different ways. She is someone who understands the value of contributing to a community." Berdie is a dedicated Alberta community leader and volunteer who forged new territory for Alberta business women. She led the development of services for Camrose families, cofounded The Camrose Booster, an award-winning publication (for which she continues to write a weekly column), and served on provincial, business and industry boards. Berdie was chair, in the late 1960s, of the founding board of the Camrose Children's Day Care Centre – the first public day care centre established in Alberta outside of Edmonton and Calgary. At that time there was public opposition to such a facility on the basis that it would encourage mothers to work outside their homes – then generally believed to be a bad thing. The concept was eventually accepted on the basis that some mothers had no choice but to work outside their homes and that there was a need to provide quality care for their children. Berdie served as Alderman for the City of Camrose from 1974 to 1977. She has also worked to enhance the quality of life in her community as a dedicated volunteer and/or supporter of organizations such as the Camrose and District Crime Stoppers, Camrose Association for Community Living, Augustana Faculty of the University of Alberta, Battle River Community Foundation, Camrose Public Library, the Business and Professional Women's Club of Camrose, and various community literacy programs.

Berdie was the first woman to be appointed to the board of the Alberta Opportunity Company, and the first woman to serve on the Alberta Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Board. In 1972 she was the first woman to ever be elected president of a Chamber of Commerce in Alberta, and only the second in all of Canada. She served as a zone director and chair of the education committee of the Alberta Chamber of Commerce. Though much of Berdie's volunteer work has focused on ensuring women are given fair opportunities in business and in the community, she refers to her self as a humanist rather than a feminist, believing that people should be appointed to positions based on their ability and suitability for the job rather than on gender. Berdie's commitment to service has been recognized with

numerous awards and honours, including the Alberta Centennial Medallion and the Canada 125 Medal. In 1992 she received the Distinguished Alumna Award from Augustana University College. Her efforts with The Camrose Booster were honoured with the Independent Free Papers of America Outstanding Contribution Award and the Joseph M. Sklenar Editorial Award. Since 2006 she has received the Alberta Award of Excellence, an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from the University of Alberta, a Literacy Award from Camrose and District Adult Learning Council, and a Golden Anniversary Award from Camrose Association for Community Living. In September, 2012, she placed second in the editorial category of the Independent Free Papers of America competition. At 92, Berdie continues to perform some editorial duties

for The Camrose Booster. She is especially grateful for her family, which includes three surviving children, ten grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. The Diamond Jubilee Medal is specially designed and minted to mark the occasion of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's ascension to the throne as Queen of Canada and honour the Queen's decades of service. The award itself is a symbol of service, excellence and community involvement – an exceptionally fitting tribute to the Queen, who is unwavering in her devotion to others. Berdie is inspired by Queen Elizabeth II because of her devotion to the vow she made in 1947: "my whole life ... shall be devoted to ... the service of our great imperial family ..." Berdie will wear the commemorative pin (which comes with the medal) to honour Queen Elizabeth II.

Knowing consequences changes views At the beginning of 2011, a hockey story dominated the sports news. It was about promising star player Sidney Crosby’s double concussions which subsequently kept him off the ice for the rest of the season, left him unready to play when the 2011-2012 season opened and, to this day, an uncertain future because of physical brutality allowed – even claimed by some to be essential – in the game. One year later, in January 2012, hockey was again the dominant sports story with the World Junior Championship being staged in Alberta. In spite of that major event, television and newspapers were, at the same time, carrying stories about Crosby concussions and violence in hockey. We refer to Peter Manbridge’s One on One interview with mild-mannered, former famous hockey goalie Ken Dryden; and the Edmonton Journal front page item (Dec. 20/11, by Sheila Dabu Nanato) citing an editorial in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) entitled Stop the Violence and Play Hockey, which says “fighting and other deliberate hits to the head in hockey should be banned because research has shown how brain and head trauma causes progressive damage.” This was good news to me, an ardent opponent of violent behavior anywhere at anytime, and one who is abhorred by the thought of being entertained by it. I find it encouraging that hockey violence and resulting injury is still being discussed. I am more hopeful now because, over the past year, some very influential people in the hockey world have become outspoken advocates of changing the rules. In addition to Dryden, these include Mario Lemieux, former hockey great and Hall of Famer, and Colin Campbell, League disciplinarian, and Emile Therein, former president of Canada Safety Council. Dryden has pointed out that times have changed and so has our understanding of the human body. We used to do a lot of stupid things without knowing the consequences, he says, but now we do know the consequences of concussion and we therefore need to rethink how we play hockey. He noted past adjustments, such as the mandatory use of helmets and facial masks for goalies, that had been born out of concern for player safety. Minor hockey enrollment has been affected by injuries. Recently released is a report that Hockey Canada teams now have 572,000 youngsters enrolled, which is down 200,000 from its peak. A joint study by University of Calgary, McGill University and University of Laval revealed that 11- and 12-year-old hockey players in leagues that allow body checking were 3.5 times more likely to suffer a concussion. University of Calgary researcher Dr. Carolyn Emery estimates that a ban on body checking in Peewee hockey would eliminate over 1 000 injuries

In the fall awards competition of the Independent Free Papers of America (IFPA) held in New Orleans, Berdie’s Pen Points column published on January 10, 2012 earned a 2nd Place Award in the Original Writing – Editorial category. Skeleton is a sport that involves racing a sled down an icy track head first. Women's skeleton appeared at the Olympics for the first time in 2002 at Salt Lake City. The format for Olympic skeleton involves two timed runs. The top men and women from the first run compete in the second run, which is held later that same day. The combined time of the two runs determines the final standings. Although the rider can leave the sled to push or move it, he or she must cross the finish line on the sled in order for the run to be considered valid.

Dr. Lanette Prediger sets her sights on 2014 Olympics By Dan Jensen

Former Camrose resident Dr. Lanette Prediger is out to prove she has what it takes to compete with the Canadian women's skeleton team at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. To get there she will have to win four gold medals over the latter half of this season and the first half of next. Dr. Prediger earned a spot on Canada's three-member Intercontinental Cup team last fall when she finished fourth in a pair of competitions at Calgary and Whistler. A few hundredths of a second faster and she would have been on Canada's World Cup team. "I was actually third, but Mellisa Hollingsworth had prequalified for the World Cup team because of her results last year," said Dr. Prediger. Her time would have been better if it wasn't for a fresh layer of snow that had fallen on the track. "Having to deal with the snow in the first race adversely affected me but that is a factor that cannot be controlled," said Dr. Prediger. "The reality is that in our sport it sometimes snows." Dr. Prediger has five competitions slated for the rest of this season, including two in Germany. Her most recent competition, just after New Year's, took her to Austria. "I'm going to be going into the competitions looking to win and expecting to win, but at the same time I realize that can be very difficult," said Dr. Prediger. "A lot of nations, like Canada, are very deep. There are also a lot of world cup athletes who come to Intercontinental Cup races and interchange between the different circuits." Dr. Prediger won't have much time to get used to the different tracks she will be sliding down in Europe. "I have only been to these particular tracks once before, so I will be learning anew, although sometimes that can be a good thing." After graduating from Camrose Composite High School in 1997, Dr. Prediger, the daughter of Gerald and Diane Prediger, made her way to medical school. She currently balances her training in skeleton with her work as an urgent care doctor in Calgary. "It is difficult but my employer has been very accommodating," said Dr. Prediger. "They

know I do skeleton and they are very supportive and flexible with my scheduling, knowing that I have to take large periods of time off in the winter. I had to work a fair bit over Christmas to get time off to go to Europe and I will be working a lot again once I come back and in the summer." Training for skeleton can be a full time job in itself. "We train Monday to Friday for four hours a day, then get every fourth week off," said Dr. Prediger. "It is a challenge to juggle work and skeleton for sure, but that is the way it has to be and I am lucky to be able to do both at the same time. Most of our training is done at the Olympic Park in Calgary but we also train at Whistler for about a month out of the year." Dr. Prediger became interested in the sport of skeleton after watching it during the 2006 Olympics. "I didn't even know what skeleton was until I saw Mellisa Hollingsworth win her Olympic bronze," she said. "It really intrigued me, so, at the urging of a friend at medical school who had done it before, I went out to the track to learn more.

After that I went to one of the recruitment camps with dryland training, and then I did a school where they start you half way up the track. I found after the first few days of the school that this was something I loved and wanted to keep doing." Dr. Prediger reached the Europa cup level (one level below Intercontinental Cup) before the 2010 Olympics. "I didn't have enough experience at that point to be able to compete for a spot on the Olympic team," she said. Dr. Prediger imagines that being able to compete for Canada in the sport of skeleton at the Olympics would be an incredible thrill. "It would be a once-in-alifetime opportunity," she said. "I have been working hard to achieve my goal of being there but so has every other Canadian athlete who is involved in the sport, so we will see what happens. I actually worked the track at the 2010 Olympics as a doctor so I know what kind of an environment the Olympics present. It would mean the world to me if I was ever fortunate enough to get to that point as an athlete."

The Camrose Primary Care Network has a fun way for you to work towards a healthier you. Themed after the “experience of a lifetime” – the famous Alaskan Iditarod Dog Sled Race, the mush your way to a healthier you 2013 PCN Virtual Trek, will run Jan. 15 until April 15. A virtual trek is a 90-day online program which keeps track of your physical fitness activities and then turns them into steps. The program will calculate all types of activities such as swimming, biking and basketball into steps so all fitness activities can count towards your steps, even snow shoveling. Participation is easy and totally free and you can win great prizes along the way. The PCN ran the HoloHolo Hawaiian Virtual Trek in 2012 with great success, with over 400 people registering in the program – logging over 219 million steps! This year, the PCN wants you to join us in this fun and unique fitness challenge which will take you on a journey across Alaska on the Iditarod Trail, “mushing” to checkpoints along the way to celebrate your personal success towards the finish line! You – the musher can join individually, or join together with some friends, family or your coworkers as a team! This is a challenge for all ages. The Iditarod Trail is 998 miles or 1,600 kilometres and 2,110,770 steps in total. This trek is a little longer than our past treks – so we want to challenge you to do the best you can. Be creative with your activities. We encourage you to try something new. Just to clarify – you do not need a dog to participate. You just need to be active. If one of your activities is walking your dog – then that keeps you both active and that’s great for both of you. It’s important to keep up an active lifestyle throughout the winter months. Keeping active not only keeps you physically fit, it’s good for your mental wellbeing and overall health. Here’s how you can get started for the 2013 mush your way to a healthier you virtual trek.

Cliff Magee joined the Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion to serve the local community. Cliff has been helping the Legion for the last 40 years and was named an honourary member in 1997. He received the Frank Moisley Award in 2004 and in 2011 Cliff was honoured with a life membership award. He grew up south of Sexsmith. "I was out in B.C. working and I had asthma so bad, that I had to come back to Alberta and it left me," explained Cliff. "Our daughter had it really bad too. We farmed for one year and then I got into the oil field business. It was good to me. We worked around here and then I took over Camrose Oilfield Services for about 10 years until I retired. I also worked at Stelco (steel pipe plant) for awhile, about 15 years." Over the years, Cliff helped build the Notty Pine Nook, board room, kitchen, painted and made several repairs to the current building. Cliff was an honour guard and pallbearer for veteran's funerals for 25 years. He has helped put white crosses on veterans' graves on Decoration Day. Cliff also helped construct and disassemble the stage used for Remembrance Day. "I believe that I received the Queen Diamond Jubilee Award for my many years of volunteering for the Legion," said Cliff. "Receiving this award means a lot to me. It was a surprise to me. I liked making repairs, renovations and helping the veterans. After I retired, I would stop in every morning to see what needed to be done. It was the least that I could do to thank the veterans for serving in the wars." Tom Coultis asked Cliff to help be a pallbearer one day and that lasted for 25 years. "We came to one funeral and there were only two ladies at it. I didn't know the guy, but I wanted to help as best that I could," Cliff said. "A lot of the times I didn't know the person, but I was there to assist them. I really enjoyed working with Tom." Cliff's wife Louise also helped at the Legion as much as possible. "We still help with dances by setting up and taking down tables and chairs," added Louise. The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal was created to mark the 2012 celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne as Queen of Canada. The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal is a tangible way for Canada to honour Her Majesty for her service to this country. At the same time, it serves to honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians.

What you can do to preserve your wedding gown You spent weeks, maybe even months searching for it. And then you wore it in front of family, friends and your now husband. You were a vision of white topped with satin, lace, beads and more. Something as special as your wedding gown shouldn’t just be tossed in a closet after the big day. Protect your gown by having it professionally cleaned and preserved by an expert dry cleaner or gown preservationist. Have your gown preserved as soon as possible after the wedding so stains won’t have time to set in. Every gown needs to be cleaned, even if it looks pristine. Stains like body oil and perspiration are invisible, but can turn the fabric yellow over time. Question the cleaner or preservationist on his preservation process. Different cleaning solvents should be used on gowns than on regular clothing because traditional solutions are too harsh. If cleaned improperly, stains may appear or the fabric may yellow years down the road. After it’s cleaned, the gown will be wrapped and boxed. The folds of the dress and bodice should be stuffed with clean, acid-free tissue to prevent permanent wrinkles. Shoulder pads, perspiration shields or anything made of foam should be removed from the gown, because they can ruin the fabric when they eventually deteriorate. Then, the gown should be put in an acid-free box. Just be sure that you personally inspect the dress before it is boxed up to ensure that stains have been removed and that it has been packed properly. Once you get the box to your home, don’t just put it anywhere. Avoid stashing it in a hot attic, a cold basement, a trunk, a drawer or even the garage. Extreme temperatures can damage gowns. Instead, store it in a climate-controlled area of the home where there are few changes in humidity and temperature. Experts suggest you open the box once a year to make sure the dress hasn’t yellowed. When doing this inspection, wear white cotton gloves so oily fingers don’t touch the fabric. Then, refold the dress to prevent permanent creases. By following the right storage steps, you’ll be able to keep your gown for years. And maybe it can even be an heirloom for your daughter to wear at her wedding someday.

RCMP members round Central Agencies Home of the Week Enjoy the great lifestyle with this condo up New Year thieves By Murray Green It may have taken several RCMP members and even a few divisions to work together, but the Mounties got their men. Two males, a 21- and 19-year-old, were charged with several criminal code offences following a series of vehicle thefts, break and enters, failing to stop for police and other multi-jurisdictional offences on Jan. 1. Police alleged that in rural Ponoka on Dec. 31, 2012, the males stole a Chevrolet Silverado truck and drove it to Daysland. The following day, on New Year's, the duo attended rural properties in Daysland and Bawlf and stole two snowmobiles. The snowmobiles were later found abandoned near another rural location near Bawlf. The culprits broke into a building and stole a Toyota Camry, drove it to Fort Saskatchewan where the RCMP in Fort Saskatchewan attempted to stop the vehicle following an impaired driving complaint. The suspects fled from police and a pursuit was not initiated, reported the RCMP. Later the same day, Ponoka RCMP received a dangerous driving complaint involving the suspect vehicle. The suspects eventually rolled the stolen car

at the junction of Highway 604 and Highway 2A. During the rollover, the vehicle partially impeded a Canadian Pacific railway track. A witness flagged down an Alberta Traffic Sheriff, who arrived on scene moments after the crash occurred. Both males had already fled on foot. The RCMP Police Dog Service was called in. However, other witnesses advised police that the males had hitched a ride from an unsuspecting citizen. It was later discovered that the unsuspecting citizen had driven the males to a residence in Lacombe. Lacombe Police Service, RCMP Ponoka, and Police Dog Services attended the residence in Lacombe and arrested the males without incident. The two men were charged with theft of pickup truck (in Ponoka); theft of a snowmobile (in Daysland); theft of a snowmobile (in Bawlf); break, enter and theft of a car (in Bawlf); failing to stop for police (in Fort Saskatchewan) and entering on land on which a line work is situated (26.1 of the Railway Safety Act). Anyone with further information regarding this incident is asked to call the local RCMP or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222TIPS.

Exercise during activities Many people equate "exercise" with doing a workout video or heading to the gym. This doesn't have to be the case at all. Regular daily activities provide a lot of the exercise a person needs and can be tweaked to provide even more. * Move while watching TV or playing video games: there are several video games today that make physical activity part of the fun. Even if your gaming system doesn't feature getting up and being active, do so on your own. While watching a television show, dance, walk in place, do jumping jacks, or any other activity during commercials. * Go outdoors: instead of recreational activities inside of the house where space is limited, play games, go on walks, or organize a pick-up sports game in the neighbourhood. You'll burn calories, get exercise, and enjoy fresh air, too. * Leave the car at home: whenever possible, bike, walk, rollerblade, or get to your destination another way. Suburban life tends to create the car-to-storeto-car-to-house pattern, which doesn't make for much physical activity. * Keep moving: if you simply must sit, such as in school or at the office, tap or kick your legs. A little movement is better than none at all.

Healthier ways to cook foods Take Care of Yourself… People often turn to hearty From Head to Toe foods to fill up and keep the body warm. Too often, however, socalled comfort foods tend to be big on fat and calories as much as they are big on flavor. With a few small ingredient changes, comfort foods can be both delicious and healthy. Just think of all those hearty and filling foods you enjoy when winter arrives. The stews, casseroles, pastas, and soups that make cold days bearable are often not the healthiest choices a person can make. The average two-cup bowl of beef chili, for example, comes in at 595 calories and 25.9 grams of fat. That's before the addition of sour cream, cheese or bread is included. Unlike the salads and sandwiches of warmer weather, comfort foods tend to be built on meats, cheeses and carbohydrate-rich ingredients. Indulging too often can mean quick weight gain and extra fat the body simply does not need. However, you do not have to give up on your favorite comfort foods; simply find ways to make them healthier. * Choose leaner meats. Substitute lean cuts of meat or alternatives to reduce the fat and calories. For example, ground turkey can be substituted for ground beef in many cases. * Reduce the cheese. Cut down on the amount of cheese in a recipe. In a dish like lasagna, add vegetables to the recipe to beef it up instead of extra cheese. When using cheese, opt for low- or no-fat varieties. * Use stocks for flavor. Soup stock can be used to flavor everything from rice to mashed potatoes, instead of relying on butter or heavy gravies. * Select whole-wheat breads. A lot of extra calories are consumed when loading up on breads that are essentially devoid of nutritional benefits. When selecting breads and doughs, go for whole-wheat products that will offer more fibre. * Opt for low-fat dairy. When a recipe calls for cream or whole milk, substitute skim milk and see if you can notice the difference. In many cases, the change in flavor will be negligible. * Stock up on nonstick sprays. Lightly mist foods with some nonstick spray instead of coating pans and ingredients in a lot of oil to cut down on calories. * Use vegetables and legumes to make a meal more hearty. Stews, soups and other comfort foods can be enhanced with mushrooms, beans or other filling items at a fraction of the fat and calories of adding meats or cheeses. * Bake or grill instead of fry. Many popular comfort foods, like fried chicken, can be made healthier simply by changing the cooking method. Make popular recipes healthy by baking them instead of frying them. * Fill up first. If you want to enjoy comfort foods as-is, fill up first on salad or soup before having a portion of the selected comfort food. This way you're less likely to overeat on the fattier dish but will still feel satiated.

COUNTY DONATES CLEMONS JERSEY The Open Door executive director Randal Nickel accepted a Mike "Pinball" Clemons autographed Toronto Argonaunts' jersey from Camrose County administrator Steve Gerlitz and Reeve Don Gregorwich. The County hosted the Alberta Rural Municipal Administrators' Association conference in Camrose on Sept. 6. The County, ARMAA and Clemons donated the jersey and $4,102 to the Open Door to assist with teens at risk programs.

Junior Achievement is Good Program

I was pleased to learn that there are plans to make the Junior Achievement program available to students in several schools within the Battle River School Division (BRSD). Junior Achievement was introduced once before, in 1972, initiated then by the Camrose Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with the Camrose Composite High School. It operated successfully for some ten to fifteen years. Like the popular and highly successful 4-H program based on the principle of learning by doing, Junior Achievement (JA) was, at that time, an after-school entrepreneurial program which taught the fundamentals of entrepreneurship by having students form companies, sell shares, select a product, manufacture and market it, then dissolve the company at the end of the course. Whether the JA company operated at a profit or a loss, students learned entrepreneurial skills and financial literacy from the exercise. Instruction and supervision were provided by volunteer entrepreneurs from the community. We understand that BRSD’s present plan is to offer the program to students from Grades three to twelve beginning in February with an 18-weeks course at the Grade twelve level at CCHS, and with a four-hour course at the Grade five level at the Jack Stuart School. The lessons students learn by participating in the JA program will serve them well throughout their lives because most of them will eventually become either employers or employees or perhaps free lancers; each will benefit as they see how what is learned in the classroom will affect their lives in the adult world of making a living. It could be the stimulus to get some students thinking more seriously about post secondary education and skill training. By operating a JA company, participants learn how the cost of production determines the price at which the product must be sold to make a profit. They learn that a product won’t sell unless it is an item that the public wants and the price does not exceed what the public is willing to pay for it. They learn that starting a business requires funds for space from which to operate plus necessary equipment and furnishings. They learn that cost of production includes property taxes, business taxes, insurance, utilities, supplies, interest on debt, and labour plus a host of other miscellaneous items. Yes, students gain practical knowledge like learning why a repair shop has to charge customers more than what the mechanic is paid in order to stay in business. Not every budding entrepreneur knows that; not every mechanic knows that; not every customer knows that – but relationships among all three would be much improved if that were understood. Successful entrepreneurship is the basis of the economic health of a community, or province or country. Manufacturing and service enterprises provide employment to people who can then afford to buy the products and services that are needs plus many that are only wants plus amenities that enhance the quality of life. Everyone wins when the relationship is understood; knowledge is the key and Junior Achievement can help with the teaching. The success of the Junior Achievement program is dependent upon the assistance of volunteer entrepreneurs. Because of my past involvement with JA, I recommend it as a project worthy of support. Whether participants become employers or employees in their adult lives, they will have a better understanding of their personal role in contributing to a healthy economy which is the source of a better life.

Congratulations on recently celebrating 60 years publishing The Camrose Booster. Camrose Toastmasters Club has just celebrated its 59th anniversary. As I reviewed our records in preparation for celebrating our 60th anniversary in 2013, I was surprised to discover that Bill Fowler was one of the original toastmasters on the 1953 roster. The roster also included other forward thinking, prominent Camrosians such as Norm Umbach, Bert Hoveland, Chuck MacLean, and both J.H. and Paddy Francoeur. In fact, the whole original roster is made up of names that most long time residents of Camrose would recognize. So how has this club survived for 59 years? It wasn’t easy. With the toastmasters organization being the brainchild of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), the original club did not allow women to become members. As members came and went, at times the membership got dangerously low. In order to survive during the 1960s, the men started allowing women to join, but they hid the fact they were women by registering them using only their initials. In 1970, Toastmasters International

found out that Camrose had women in their club and ordered them to get rid of the women, or lose their charter. In 1973, Toastmasters International finally voted to allow women to join. Over the years, Camrose Toastmasters had two members who competed at the international level: Art Yaeck and Martin Presse, both winning at the club, the area, the division, the district, and the Region level to participate in the International Contest. There are only a few of the 13,500 Toastmasters International clubs that can make that claim. How has our club survived/ thrived for 59 years? I contend it is because Toastmasters International’s formula works. The program is self-paced – everyone progresses at the rate with which they are comfortable, and can join at any time of the year. The program is dedicated to helping individuals improve both public speaking and leadership skills useful to everyone. Is it only me or has anyone else noticed that each Christmas and Easter the “education” channels, (you know them, the ones who run programming promoting alien visits, Nostradamus, Stonehenge, the Mayan calendar, and every other obscure belief), start running programs which question the well-documented history of Christianity. I don’t mind critical questions; critical questions have motivated my own inquiries about Christian history. What bothers me is the utter hypocrisy and, dare I say, dishonesty of those who present obscure speculation as fact while disparaging one of the best documented events in ancient history. As I said, I don’t mind the criticism. Critical questions guide and focus my own search for answers. And what I have learned while trying to answer the questions may surprise some readers. Very little of the New Testament is questioned on his-

torical grounds. Even when scholars reject the biblical interpretation of the events, they agree they are historically accurate. There may be some excuse for questioning the miracles, even though they are well supported by the testimony. However, that is not my complaint. What troubles me is a bias, or prejudice, which presents itself as scholarly reserve but is, in fact, anti-Christian bigotry. “The believers in miracles accept them (rightly or wrongly) because they have evidence for them. The disbelievers in miracles deny them (rightly or wrongly) because they have a doctrine against them.” Chesterton As early as the late 1800’s archaeologists in the Middle East discovered that the accounts in the New Testament accurately described the area 1st Century. They realized that within 100 years after the events described the area had changed enough that writing such detailed accounts 100 years after the event was effectively impossible. This means the New Testament had to be written within living memory of the events described. The conclusion is made even more certain by references to the events in other writings, many of them authored by hostile witnesses. Yet, more than a century after the archaeological evidence was published, and with even more discoveries adding support to the conclusion, we still have so-called “scholars” claiming the books were written hundreds of years after the fact. Either these “scholars” are deceiving their audience or they are deceiving themselves. I might even excuse the television networks which broadcast this nonsense, if they provided balanced reporting, but they do not. The same people who promote naïvely superstitious belief for Stonehenge, aliens, or the Mayan calendar regularly propagate a biased and unjustified skepticism of actual history. There are literally thousands of documents and artifacts available to honest researchers. We do know, with near certainty, what has happened at the time. We have eye-witness testimony with archaeological support. Yet so-called “educational” television gives us speculative nonsense mingled with conspiracy theory. That’s not education; that’s not even information; it’s anti-Christian propaganda. Dave Gosse, Camrose

RCMP lay charges in mailbox case A man and woman suspected of various break and enter, mail theft and identify fraud offences in Camrose County have been charged by Camrose County RCMP. Both are living on rural property in Camrose County. Investigation revealed that

mail was being stolen from rural mailboxes with the intention of gathering personal information of individuals. Once in possession of enough personal information, the suspects assumed the identity of the victims and committed a wide range of fraud related activities.

Camrose RCMP reminds everyone who receives mail from rural mailboxes to assess the durability of the lock they are using. The best lock to prevent theft of mail is a guarded or shrouded shackle padlock where the guard or shackle is made of boron or stainless steel.

All of the leagues still have tight scores for first place. David Hesje is on top of the standings with 12 points for Monday night mixed league. Close behind are the Ronelle Kiziak team and the Don Miller team with 11 points each, Ray Black is a close third with nine points. The Tuesday night men’s league has the Roger Galenza rink in first place with 15 points, Neil Bratrud has 13 points for second place and the Ross Boman and Doug Algar rinks have a respectable 12 points to tie for third place. Doreen Black’s team is on top of the standings for the Wednesday night ladies' league with 15 points, Donna Strudwick’s rink is a close second with 11 points,

and the Augustana ladies' team is right behind them with 10 points. Roger Galenza’s team is on top of the standings with 13 points for the Thursday night open league, Jenn Allaway’s rink and Dave Finlay’s team are tied for second place with 12 points each and there is a bunch up for third place with Neil Orr, Paul Samoisette, Robert Dammann, and the Martin Kalmbach rinks all at 10 points each. We would like to recognize the team from OLMP which has developed very quickly since the first time it stepped on the ice. You’ll see short video clips showing other parents successfully dealing with the same issue and you’ll be encouraged to share your thoughts with the otehr parents in the group, if you wish to. Large-diameter front and rear sway bars, stiffened body mounts, and soft ride rate all pave the way for a smooth and controlled response. Trojan boys capture holiday basketball tournament hosted by Augustana In the first game CCHS easily defeated Archbishop Jordan of Sherwood Park 87-62. Jordan Nickel had a big game scoring 21 points and dominated the boards to be selected as player of the game. The Trojans second game was a close battle against RF Staples of Westlock which Camrose won 77-73. Evan Adams had his best game of the season so far and was selected as player of the game for scoring 13 points and hauling down nine rebounds. In their final game, the Trojans were up against their rivals from Wetaskiwin. CCHS fell behind by 10 points in the first quarter and tied the game up by the half. In the second half, the lead changed several times, but in the fourth quarter Camrose dominated the boards and defeated Wetaskiwin 72-63, to win the tournament. Luke Bramfield was selected as player of the game for coming up big in the fourth quarter.

High school Trojans hit hoop camp By Murray Green The Camrose Composite High School Trojans boys' basketball team entered the Augustana Vikings Invitational Basketball Tournament with one goal in mind. The team members want to put themselves in a position to defend the 3A provincial banner won last year. To reach the goal, coach James Saby entered the squad in the Augustana tournament because it offered a training camp, as well as games for his players. "It is a good way to get back in shape and prepare for the rest of the season. While most teams are still off on the holiday break, we are getting back into game condition. It is great to learn from university players, while playing some games," said Jordan Nickel, a Grade 12 player on the Trojans team. "It's good to learn from the Vikings because they were the top players at the high school level. It is a good opportunity to train together with other teams and then compete against each other," explained Jordan. "I like the blend between a traditional basketball camp and a tournament. You learn skills in the morning and put them to use in the afternoon during the games." Since Jordan moved to Camrose nine years ago, he has noticed the community improvements. "The facilities at the Augustana campus have really improved and so has the team. The players are good to work with. They have helped me." Prior to the break, the Trojans were rolling in league play by defeating Innisfail, Rocky Mountain House and Lacombe in three games. However, CCHS placed fourth in its own tournament, which sent the message that they still had some work to do. "January is a packed time for us with a lot of games and practices. We just want to keep improving as we prepare for zones and provincials," added Jordan, who would like to keep playing the sport he loves. "I'm looking at engineering school, so it would have to be a decent opportunity to change that. If I received a good scholarship to play basketball, I would," Jordan said. "Basketball has helped me grow socially with fun times and the hard work has taught me that nothing comes easy. Sport is a great way to get introduced to that concept." The toughest thing in sports is to repeat as champions. "Anything is within reach if you try hard enough. Our goal is to win zones and go to provincials. Once we do that, our next goal would be to win provincials," added Jordan. CCHS travels to Red Deer to take on Hunting Hills on Jan. 8 and then the Trojans host the Ponoka Broncs on Jan. 17 in the next two league games.

Scott teaches skills to young cross country skiers By Murray Green

Beckie Scott is an inspiration to everyone. She went from growing up in Vermilion to the most decorated cross-country skier for Canada at the Olympic Games. "I remember coming to Camrose and participating in the Alberta Cup events," said Beckie. "Camrose was a great place to ski for me and being here brings back a lot of memories." Beckie was coached by Les Parsons, the current ski coach at the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus. When she heard about the opportunity to return to Camrose to instruct young athletes, Beckie jumped at the chance. "I like to instruct at about five camps a year to help clubs and communities. I also talk about skiing and how to improve. It's a fun way to give something back to the sport," added Beckie. Beckie's camps are sponsored by Statoil, a Norwegian oil company that backs the Ski Fit North Program and the Northern Nordic Cross-country Ski Camps in Alberta. Les was excited to have Beckie as the guest coach during the camp. "Last year, our Camrose Ski Club celebrated its 100th year anniversary, as one of the oldest ski clubs in Canada. This year, over 100 skiers from cross-country ski clubs across Northern Alberta were inspired by Beckie, as she shared her story as an athlete, who started skiing as a child in Vermilion and eventually became an Olympic Games gold medallist," said Les. "Beckie was very impressed with the whole camp and the calibre of skiers. After doing a few presentations about her experiences, and some questionanswer sessions, she commented about how much she appreciated the spirit and enthusiasm of all the athletes, coaches and fami-

"After she skied the 3 km loppet distance with her five-year-old son Teo, she commented on how fortunate we are to have such great ski trails in the middle of Camrose." The other guest coach at the camp was Ulf Kleppe from Edmonton, who was the technique coach for 2011 world champion Devon Kershaw, and, is one of Canada's best ski technique coaches. Ulf, along with other Alberta club coaches, provided ski technique training and ski games

for skiers of all ages, including members of the Alberta Ski Team, Augustana Vikings, Alberta Cup athletes from racing teams, youth racers from ski clubs, the Camrose Junior Vikings Track Attack team, children jackrabbit skiers; masters adult athletes and adult recreational skiers who are just learning how to ski. "The main focus of our camp was to coach fundamental ski technique, from new skiers to elite athletes," continued Les. "Competitive skiers did some intensity interval training and

one long distance training to give visiting skiers a chance to explore our ski trails along the beautiful Stoney Creek valley." The fun family camp was intended to get athletes excited about the sport. Competitive athletes improved their ski technique while training with their friends from other teams. "Children had the most fun playing jackrabbit games. Parents improved their ski technique and coaches and leaders improved their ski technique coaching skills," said Les. The annual Ole Uffda Lop-

Augustana hoops team focuses on strong second half By Murray Green

The Augustana Vikings men's basketball squad faced a bit of a roller coaster ride in the first half. It went from being a nationally ranked team to a 5-4 club. "It didn't go as well as we would have liked it to go, but it is still the best start we have had since I've been here," said veteran Shayn Bruney. "It set us up for a good second half. We are going in with an attitude that we are the team to beat." The Vikings started off red hot and then cooled when they lost a couple of games they should have won. "We felt confident going into the season. When we were ranked high it gave everyone a little more confidence," said Shayn. "We are more familiar with being the underdogs and filling that role is easier for us. Anytime we won in the past it was classed as an upset. A few losses have given us the opportunity to get hungry again and opponents will

underestimate us again, like they usually do." Shayn believes the Vikings are still the team to beat. "We are the stronger team in the north. Only one team from the north is above us right now and that is Concordia (with a 6-3 record). We feel we can win all of the rest of the games. It's my last year, and I want to win the ACAC championships and go to nationals." The road to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference playoffs started during the holiday break. "Most of the players trained hard during the break to prepare for the second half. I worked with a personal trainer and built up some extra strength and the other guys worked out as well. We are in shape for the second half," said Shayn, who has 118 points in nine games this season. "I stayed in Edmonton because they have an open gym for training and playing. The steps we needed to take

have already been taken. We are ready to go." The Vikings are currently running a high school camp and tournament, as well as playing some exhibition games. "We have had camps before and it is rewarding to see these guys improve," explained Shayn. "They have taken the things we have worked on and are better players. I remember seeing number 15 on Camrose (CCHS Trojan Jordan Nickel) when he was 5'7" and now he is huge, taller than I am. Teaching in the clinic has given me the opportunity to see the players develop. It's fun. I stress the fact that we are student athletes. School is so important and it comes first. As much as basketball is important to me, school is still above it. I want to pass that message on to the high school students. It takes many hours of library work and studying to be successful in your classes. I want them to be prepared for that."

Taking basketball, or any sport, away from a student is the worst thing that can happen to an athlete. "It would be just devastating if I lost basketball. I study hard in order to play the sport I love," said Shayn. "I just want these students to understand how important school really is. Basketball is a high second." The players at the high school camp are talented. "I play with them a little. I tell them they are good enough to play for any college team. But, if they want to play for Augustana, they need to work on this and that," added Shayn. "It takes a full summer of training to make the jump from high school to the university level. It gives them a unique prospective on where we see ourselves and where they have to get to." The camp also helps the Augustana players with conditioning and getting back into game situations. "Playing NAIT is good because it gives us some meaningful competi-

tion," said Shayn. "I encourage everyone to come and watch our games. The crowds we have here are the reason I came here in the first place. Our fans are the best. I wish we had a camp like this where college athletes talked to us when I was in high school." Basketball Augustana launches the second half regular season against the Grant MacEwan Griffins. The home game is on Saturday, Jan. 12, with the women's game starting at 6 p.m. and the men's following at 8 p.m. Hockey The hockey Vikings take on the Grant MacEwan Griffins on Jan. 9 to begin the New Year in the EnCana Arena beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Camrose. Volleyball Augustana opens the second half at home by taking on the SAIT Trojans on Jan. 11. The women's game begins at 6 p.m. and the men follow at 8 p.m. on Friday.

Fred Daley Following a full and productive life, Fred passed away peacefully on January 1, 2013 at the age of 91 years. He is survived by his wife of 64 years Jean; sons Patrick and Norman (Caroline); and daughters Margaret (Terry) Bangen, Donna (Tom) Herman and Karen (Jose) DeBorba. Also left are his grandchildren Kyle (Michelle), Kirsten (Nat), Benjamin (Kristen), Rebecca (Juho), Andrew (Erica), Charles (Jessica), Russell, Sophia, Desiree, Vincent and Zachary; and great-grandchildren Aila, Travis and Tyler. Fred was born in Little Gem and in 1934 moved with his family to Duhamel. He farmed in the Duhamel area and was an outstanding athlete. He moved to Strome, worked at the Co-op store and played on the baseball team. In Strome, he met and married Jean Agnes Scheelar in 1948. From Strome, they moved to Hearts Hill, SK and then to Camrose for the past 63 years. Five children were born between 1949 and 1961. They were busy with work, offspring and their activities. There were challenges and, of course, successes; the greatest was ensuring that all five children completed university. Fred was well known through his work at Duggan’s Food Land and Eaton’s, participation in K of C and AA. At 65, Fred retired. After Jean retired, they were free to travel and began many trips to Sherwood Park and BC to visit family and enjoy time with their grandchildren. With Jean’s support, Fred was well enough to attend two family celebrations in 2011 – his 90th birthday party in BC and Ben and Kristen’s wedding in Edmonton. We had a last family celebration on December 27, 2012. Fred will be fondly remembered as an honest, spiritual and ethical man, for his dedication to and pride in his family, a strong work ethic and his sense of humor. He was a good man who has left his mark on many. He will be missed. A Prayer Vigil was held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 4, 2013 at Weber’s Mount Pleasant Chapel. A funeral mass took place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church. Cremation has taken place. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

October 8, 1943 – December 13, 2012 Joyce, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend passed away on December 13, 2012 in Daysland Hospital surrounded by her family and friends at the age of 69. Joey, as she was known to friends and family, was born on October 8, 1943 in Killam Hospital. She was the fourth child born to William and Margaret Sunderman. Joyce grew up on a farm four miles east of Heisler with her four siblings Bev (Mary) Sunderman, Willa (Delford) Pierce, Peggy (Ron) Badry and Bill (Betty) Sunderman. On November 4, 1961, Joyce married Calvin Thomas of Killam. They lived in Bawlf for eight years and had three children Brenda Thomas, Deanna (Elmer) Horton and Kevin (Joanne). They then moved to an acreage half a mile west of Spring Lake Church where they had another child, Trevor (Jennifer). In 1975, Joyce and Calvin moved the family to a farm six miles east of Heisler. There, they raised the family until they moved to Daysland in 1989. In 1985, Joyce started working at Killam Auxiliary. She worked there for 12 years. Halfway through her twelfth year, she started to work at Daysland Hospital in the Assisted Living Ward. This became Providence Place. Joyce worked there until she retired in 2011. Joyce loved her job. She enjoyed spending time with and taking care of people. She was liked by all, and took good care of her patients. Joyce was predeceased by her parents William and Margaret; Sylvester Sunderman (half brother); Matthew and Helena Thomas (in-laws); and Edward Thomas (brother-in-law). She is survived by her husband; four children; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers; two sisters; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. A prayer vigil was held on Monday, December 17, 2012 at 7:30 p.m., from Our Lady of The Prairies Roman Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at 11:00 a.m., from Our Lady of The Prairies Roman Catholic Church, Daysland with Rev. Leon Kler as celebrant. July 7, 1929 – January 2, 2013 Charles (Chuck) Collins was the only son of Tannis and Charles Collins, and beloved husband of Doreen Collins and his predeceased first wife Eva of 51 years, and the loving father of Tannis (Jack) Redekop, Terri (Doug) Parker and Kent (Cathie) Collins. He was called to the Lord on January 2, 2013 at the age of 83 years following a courageous battle with lung cancer at St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose, AB. He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Jon and Jay Redekop, Deonne (Cedric) and daughter Zelie Eulliot, Brett, Jeff (Janna) and Jordan (Megan) Parker; Dylan, Alesha and Tori-Anne Collins; a very special cousin Avis (Bill) Carr; sister-in-law Betty-Joan Rutherford; extended families, the Rutherford’s and the Bentley’s; Doreen’s family Joanne Nyback, Sharon (Doug) Hinecker, Ron Nyback and their children and grandchildren who loved Papa Chuck. Chuck was predeceased by his parents Tannis and Charles Collins; wife Eva Collins (Rutherford) in 2005; his dear granddaughter Janelle Redekop; Eva’s parents Pearl and Lowell Rutherford; Eva’s siblings Vivian Collins, Alvin (Edna) Rutherford and Bill Rutherford. Chuck was born on July 7, 1929 in Lloydminister, Saskatchewan and grew up in Drumheller and Mountain Park, AB. He married Eva Rutherford in June 1954 and they raised their family Tannis, Terri and Kent in the communities of Drumheller and Forestburg AB, where Chuck lived until 2009. He was actively involved in the community, participating and supporting the sports that he loved – Forestburg Golf Club, Curling Club and hockey where he coached numerous teams at all levels. Chuck’s greatest love in life was to share time with his family and his friends. Chuck had a kind heart, fun-loving spirit and an outgoing personality. In his passion for hockey and golf, he enjoyed a competitive game and playing socially. After marrying his childhood sweetheart Doreen in 2009, he moved to Camrose where they shared their lives with both families and friends. They enjoyed an active life with family celebrations, coffee groups, concerts, the Kodiak hockey games and treasured their cherished time in their beautiful home and yard together. Our family has been blessed with Chuck’s love and support, warm smile, kind spirit and frequent laugh that enveloped all of us in his presence. He will remain in our hearts and our memories forever. Peggy was born on July 10, 1931. She passed away in Camrose on December 10, 2012 at the age of 81 years. She graduated from the Misercordia School of Nursing in 1953. She nursed in Killam, Daysland and Camrose. For a total of 41 years, she was a good nurse and loved every day. People knew her for her laugh at the Smith Clinic. On July 21, 1976, Peg married Victor Larson. They enjoyed pony chariot and chuckwagon races, lots of travelling and many fun times with family and friends. Peggy loved rodeos, wagon races, travelling, flower gardens, cards (rummy), little kids, family, friends, laughing, being teased and food. No family member ever got away without a big hug and kisses from Peggy – she was very affectionate and enjoyed one-on-one visits. She also had a close friend, Harvey, who was dear to her heart. In her later years, Peg’s health let her down. She was happy to be in Deer Meadows where her sister, Phyllis, the staff and neighbors were there for her. Peggy will be sadly missed by two brothers Roger Weller of Daysland, and Ed Weller of Fort Saskatchewan; three sisters Phyllis Bowie of Camrose, Dyann Niehaus (Roger) of West Bank, BC, and Judy Anonson (Gary Schaupmeyer) of Edmonton; many nieces and nephews; and lots of friends. Peggy was predeceased by her husband Victor; her parents Leo and Viola Weller; one brotherin-law Lyle Bowie; two sisters-in-law Doreen Weller and Dorothy Weller; and two nephews David Weller and Bobby Bowie. MONTHLY PROPERTY TAX PAYMENT PLAN To be eligible to participate in the Monthly Property Tax Payment Plan, an Authorization Form must be completed. The form is available on our website at www.camrose.ca or can be picked up at City Hall, faxed or mailed to you. You may still sign up for the Payment Plan after the month of January, however payment for any missed month(s) must be made at the time the Payment Plan commences. Provided that all current year tax payments are made on time and without default, no penalties (or incentives) are added to the account during the year (for example, 6% on balances outstanding after June 30). Monthly payments of arrears are encouraged, however penalties will be applied until all arrears and penalties have been paid in full. Monthly payments on property taxes must be made by preauthorized bank withdrawal (we require a sample â€œVOIDâ€? cheque blank). Payment withdrawal dates may be on either the 1st or the 16th of each month. If you are interested in signing up for the Monthly Payment Plan, or require further information, please contact the Financial Services Department at 780-672-4426.
