The Camrose Self Advocates is a group of individuals who started off learning how to speak up for themselves. As part of their mission/vision statement, they have now moved into investing in the community in which they live as a means to empower them. So far they have raised money/ product for the Terry Fox Run, The Camrose Food Bank and the Silent Santa project. They are always collecting bottles as a means to raise funds for different groups that are making a difference in Camrose. They are currently doing a Penny†Drive for the Camrose Women's Shelter. Junior Achievement program needs volunteers By Dan Jensen

Organizers of a Junior Achievement program in Camrose are looking for volunteers to help students learn the basics of running a business. "There is an opportunity for people from the community to work with them (students) and provide mentorship," said Battle River School Division communications coordinator Diane Hutchinson. "We need business people to conduct seminars and sessions, help with product selection and determine what is a good product to sell, and provide insight into manufacturing a product." Junior Achievement offers 10 experiential, hands-on programs for students from Grades 3 to 12 that focus on entrepreneurship, work readiness and financial literacy concepts. An after-school company program for high school students has students work together to start a business, manufacture and sell a product and liquidate that business after 18 weeks. Students at the junior high level are encouraged to develop the financial literacy skills necessary to make informed decisions

about their financial futures and to think about the personal and economic costs of dropping out of school, while students at the elementary level explore how their needs and wants are met through jobs in the community, learn about the impacts of technology, and see what it takes to run a business in a busy world. "Our intent is to start the high school program in the second semester at the beginning of February," said Hutchinson. "Jack Stuart School has already indicated it will be participating in the four-hour Junior Achievement program designed for the Grade 5 level." Battle River School Division, City of Camrose economic development and the Battle River Alliance for Economic Development began discussing the possibility of starting a Junior Achievement program in Camrose this past fall. The idea was met with good response when pitched to four schools during meetings in late November. "We got the impression that the program was something the schools really wanted to look into," said City of Camrose economic

development officer Ray Telford. "We will be meeting again in mid January to set the dates." The Junior Achievement program had been dormant in Battle River School Division for 25 years before being started again at Sedgewick High School last year. "It had quite an impact on Flagstaff County because the kids in the program came from a variety of communities," said Hutchinson. "They were the smallest community in Alberta to offer the program and they did pretty well. One of the students in the program received a scholarship to attend a national junior achievement event in Halifax." The commitment of time required from volunteers interested in helping with Junior Achievement would vary according to where the program is at a certain place and time. "If they want to be involved in the high school program they don't have to be there the entire 18 weeks," said Hutchinson. "There is an opportunity for people to come in at different times according to their area of interest. At the elementary level the programs are offered in a couple

of sessions or in a half day so it is less of a time commitment." Volunteers will be provided with all the information they need to tailor their presentations to their specific audiences. The Junior Achievement program ties in well with Alberta Education's desire to make learning more competency-based by building links between the classroom and "the real world." The current focus is to have students emerging from classrooms who, in addition to being engaged thinkers and ethical students, have an entrepreneurial spirit. "The students in Junior Achievement are really engaged by having mentors and people from the community talking about business," said Hutchinson. "They are able to draw a link between what they are doing in school and what they hope to do afterwards." The mission of Junior Achievement Northern Alberta is to prepare today's youth to be tomorrow's leaders, business people and innovators. "JA teaches kids how to be both financially responsible and entrepreneurially daring," states

a Junior Achievement fact sheet. "We inspire young people by showing them how to become self sufficient, apply entrepreneurial thinking to the workplace, and how to create jobs which make their communities more robust. JA teaches kids the economic relevance of staying in school and how to effectively manage their finances. JA helps our youth connect the dots from where they are now to where they want to go in their lives. JA gives kids an edge." Telford sees nothing but good coming out of the Junior Achievement program in Camrose. "It is going to provide good information to the students about being an entrepreneur, working on their own and opening a business. It could show students that where they currently live is a good place for opening up a business. They (Junior Achievement) did a survey that indicated that 80 per cent of students felt better prepared to enter the world of work after taking this program. These kids are going to be our future leaders, so it would be nice to get them involved now."

Camrose County applies for grant to study water system in New Norway By Murray Green

Camrose County council agreed to apply for a Regional Collaboration Grant to study the former Village of New Norway water system infrastructure. A proposal seeking $50,000 will be sent to municipal affairs as a follow-up to confirm the costing that the county presented to the minister during the AAMDC Convention in November. "This study will allow the county to have a detailed cost outline of the water and wastewater systems in New Norway that we can present to the minister for a funding request," said county administrator Steve Gerlitz. Councillor Brian Austrom moved that "Camrose County submit a Regional Collaboration Grant to Alberta Municipal Affairs for a detailed replacement costing of the New Norway water and wastewater systems, so that cost can be submitted to Alberta Municipal Affairs for funding." Crushing plant In his report, administrator Steve described his tour of the Cargill canola crushing plant near Saskatoon. "It was a very good tour; unfortunately we were unable to take pictures inside. There are 80 employees in that plant with 30 to 40 per cent coming from the surrounding area and the rest are from Saskatoon," explained Steve. "I was impressed with the way they controlled the gas. There was a little bit of an odour as we turned onto the plant site, but it was only for a couple of seconds. The only other time I smelled burning was near the boilers. I think the plant that is proposed for Camrose County will be a welcome addition." The plant will be built near Camrose in 2013 and will be in use for the 2014 crop season. Assistant administrator The county named agricultural fieldman Paul King as the new assistant county administrator. He switched positions in midDecember.

Recycle with Centra Cam depot receives nasty surprise By Dan Jensen

Staff at the Recycle with Centra Cam depot had a nasty surprise awaiting them Dec. 27. "We came back to a driveway that was filled with boxes and bags full of recyclable materials â€“ everything from paper, cardboard and electronics to tin, plastic and glass," commented Recycle with Centra Cam coordinator Terry Vickers.

"It took all of us working together about an hour to get cleaned up." The recycling depot had taken out newspaper ads announcing it would not be open on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and had placed cardboard barricades in front of the building. "We were hoping that people would honour our closing but they didn't," said Vickers. "They

just couldn't wait an extra day or two to get rid of their stuff." Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day are the only three statutory holidays that the Recycle with Centra Cam depot is closed. "Most Camrosians have been pretty good about observing the recycling depot's closing and aren't in such a rush to make drop-offs," said Vickers. "Those who are in a hurry are simply making it tougher

for us. I know they wouldn't like it if someone dropped recyclable materials off in their driveway." The Recycle with Centra Cam collection depot is run by Centra Cam under contract with the City of Camrose. The facility is open for most drop-offs 24 hours a day and depot staff is always willing to answer questions from people about what can be recycled.

The depot asks that Camrosians sort and clean their recycled products at home to save on the amount of work that staff have to do when it arrives at the depot. If possible, paper products should be bundled, boxed or bagged into different types (newspapers separate from catalogues), and tin cans, plastic and glass should be rinsed to reduce odours.

Bawlf students plan bake sale to help Special Olympics By Murray Green

Bawlf School staff member Vanessa Sheppard is challenging her students and other staff to help raise funds to send an athlete or two to the Special Olympics provincials this spring. Several volunteers and organizer Vanessa, who is a swimming coach for Special Olympics, are holding a bake sale to raise funds to take about 50 local athletes to the various sporting events held in Red Deer and Edmonton. "I've witnessed first hand how it is difficult for a lot of our athletes to raise their own funds of $125 to participate and travel to provincials this spring," said Vanessa. "So I challenged my school to the cause. Our goal is to raise $250, which will sponsor two athletes. This is a modest goal, which I believe we will surpass. All of the baking and desserts are homemade and submitted by our own students and staff." The bake sale will be held during noon hour on Wednesday, Jan. 9. "After we raise our funds, a group of the athletes will be visiting our school in February," added Vanessa.

Vikings host high school basketball tournament By Murray Green

The Augustana Vikings will be holding the third annual high school basketball tournament from Jan. 3 to 5. The highly successful tournament not only provides challenging games for the high school athletes; it is also a chance for the athletes to participate in a skill development camp and they can watch university level basketball players in action. "We're happy to have four eager schools and the opportunity to work with them in our traditional tournament clinic each morning," said Dave Drabiuk, Vikings men's basketball coach. The tournament was first designed to be held between Christmas and New Year, but the dates were changed for a variety of reasons. "The students and coaches, both for high school and university, found it to be better for the programs if it was held after the holiday season," explained Dave. "It is also better for Augustana to have the event when the university is fully open. Classes start on the Monday following the tournament, so we can bring our players back to help with the coaching instruction. It also allows teams to have more of a holiday break." The format will be similar to the past two editions. "Augustana players will be helping with coaching and running the tournament. It is good to have our players put on the other hat and be coaches. A lot of the players at Augustana will become coaches, work with children or youth and be in leadership positions. This gives them the opportunity to learn those skills, as well as be able to give something back," said Dave. "It allows Augustana coaches to give back without an ulterior motive. It's a chance for coaches and players to give back to the game that has given them so many opportunities." "It is really popular with the high school coaches because it is a good time for development for the players. We will be having skills clinics in the morning from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and having games in the afternoon beginning at 2 p.m."

"We are really happy to have CCHS in the tournament to give us that Camrose connection. Coach James Saby has been a big supporter of the tournament. Then if Camrose is in, a natural rival like Wetaskiwin wants to be in. We also like the way it expands to the next area like Sherwood Park.

This year we have added Westlock, which is going to be a contender in the 3A schools division," Dave said. "We saved the Camrose-Wetaskiwin match for the last game, so we hope it builds up to a good one." The tournament will feature regular officials and those who want to move up in age divisions. Augustana will be holding a spring all-star basketball series for girls' and boys' high school players in March.

Kodiaks extend winning streak to seven games By Murray Green

The Camrose Kodiaks are starting the New Year looking to extend a seven game winning streak. Camrose started off sluggish, but scored first when the offence heated up to score three straight goals. Luc Vandale sparked the offence with two tallies in the 4-1 win over the Grizzlys on Dec. 22. Nolan Marshall and Jonathan Lashyn garnered the other markers for the Kodiaks. Camrose netminder Devin McDonald made 36 of 37 saves to pick up the win. A good third period and overtime saved the day for the Kodiaks against the Fort McMurray Oil Barons on Dec. 21 at the EnCana Arena. The Oil Barons dominated the second period and led 4-2 heading into the third. However, the Kodiaks again came out fired up to score twice in the third and Tyndall finished the comeback with the winner in overtime for the 5-4 victory. Hazel Barbara Walger October 8, 1938 –December 22, 2012 Hazel Barbara Walger (nee Johnson) passed away peacefully in St. Mary’s Hospital, Camrose, Alberta at the age of 74 years young with family at her side. Hazel leaves to mourn her loving husband Arthur; daughter Debra Anne (Ron) of Camrose; son Robbie of Winnipeg, Manitoba; son Ricky (Karen) of Bittern Lake; six grandchildren Derrick and Jaron of Camrose, Janessa and Lenay of Winnipeg, Kaylyn and Graham of Bittern Lake; five great-grandchildren Dederick, Trisha, Joshua, Jeremy and Chance; and numerous nieces and nephews. Hazel is also survived by three sisters Mildred (Charles) Fillinger of Bashaw, Betty (Roger) Badry of Camrose, and Violet (Jerry) Dorscheid of Grande Prairie. Hazel was predeceased by her daughter Sharon Lynn; mother Alice and father Richard; two brothers Lloyd and Gordon; and two sisters Irene Campbell and Joyce Johnson. Hazel’s early childhood years, growing up in Camrose with limited resources, had impact on her outlook and her drive for a fulfilling family life. With her sisters, they found support and strength in each other where they formed a life bond of mutual support. She attended Sunday School at Camrose United Church where she became a member in 1957. In her high school years with the encouragement of teachers, she nurtured her artistic drawing gifts along with her interest in colours and fashion. She could draw beautiful flowing sketches. Early on, Hazel learned to believe in herself, in her Christian faith and in family. Many who knew her recognized that she could fight dearly for core values which included self-determination, family and a positive attitude. She married Arthur in 1957 and took on the challenge of rural life and the caring of three subsequent children. She brought a sense of sophisticated flair to the home which she shared with her children and husband. She greatly enjoyed decorating the family home that was built in 1967 and in choosing the outfits for her children and, later, grandchildren. Hazel was young at heart and often had a way of connecting with people whose trust was placed in her. She enjoyed making a person’s day a little brighter, even at times when she may have been dealing with her own life struggles. She always had the gift of conversation. Perhaps her greatest life commitment, but definitely her dearest love, was her family. Her incredible and endless giving as a loving homemaker never stopped flowing to her children and husband; and then to the generations of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She provided for every possible family need with perfection, along with caring for the personal well-being of each family member. This was important to her as she was determined to make a good family life, and she did that perfectly and tirelessly. She was a mother not just to her own children, but also to many of her nephews, nieces, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends. She was like a second mother to many. Mom lived by love, laughter and personal strength, all which she shared freely. A funeral service was held on Friday, December 28, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. from Camrose United Church with Mary Ann Pastuck and Rev. Brian Hunter officiating. Inurnment took place in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. Memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to Camrose United Church, Cross Cancer Institute, or the Hospice Society of Camrose and District. Faith (Hoveland) Kut The family of Faith Kut announces, with great sadness, her passing on Christmas Eve after a long illness. She was the beloved wife of Gordon Kut, loving mother of Chantel (Shawn) Loiselle and grandmother of Rylen and Hayden Louiselle. The only daughter of Pastor Laverne and Marilyn Hoveland, she was born in Saskatchewan on September 17, 1965 where she spent her early childhood. The family later moved to Camrose, AB where she received most of her education. Faith became a registered nurse, graduating from Lethbridge Communitiy College. She moved to the Peace River area, living in Hythe and working in Beaverlodge and Hythe. She had a particular affection for the elderly and endeared herself to the residents of the care facilities in which she worked. While working in the north, she met the love of her life, Gordon, son of Peter and Gerta Kut of Bonanza, AB. They were married on July 5, 1996 in a garden wedding at the farm home where they lived for the first years of their marriage. They moved to Sundre where they bought their dream home – a log house on an acreage. Her illness later necessitated a move into Sundre. She attended the Evangelical Missionary Church there. She was an active runner and could often be seen with one of the several dogs she collected; in particular, Stetson, her special Rottweiler. Faith was gifted in the creativeness and joy of life. Cheerful and energetic, she was the delight of her family and friends. Sadly, she suffered from progressive Frontal Lobe Dementia and spent the last four years of her life at the Centennial Centre in Ponoka where she was treated with dignity and compassion. Also mourning her loss are other members of her immediate family: brothers Paul (Maureen) Hoveland, John (Marie) Hoveland and their sons Caleb and Connor; Mark (Danelle) Hoveland; mother-in-law Gerta Kut; brother-in-law Norm (Joanne) Kut and niece Nikki (Chance) Kut; as well as extended family in Saskatchewan, Alberta, Ontario and the USA. Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 29, 2012 at McDougal Chapel in Sundre followed by a Celebration of Life.

In 1959 the Camrose community was fortunate to attract a young and talented American musician in the guise of James Neff. After 32 years of dedicated service at Camrose Lutheran College with retirement from a long and distinguished career as a professor of music theory, history, composition, and conducting in 1993, Professor Emeritus James Neff currently has much reason to celebrate. A prolific composer of choral music, Neff recently

received word from Cypress Choral Music in Vancouver, one of Canada’s foremost music publishing houses, that one of his most beloved choral works was accepted for publication. As of November 2012 How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place was released for distribution to the Canadian choral community and beyond. A beautiful and accessible choral work, How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place was composed 25 years ago for the dedication of Bethel Lutheran Church. It was premiered at Bethel with a choir comprised of members of the con-

gregation under the baton of Dr. Jonathan Mohr. Of his published oeuvre, it is thought that How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place has been the most frequently performed. It has been recorded by Dr. Marc Hafso and The Augustana Choir on the Standing on Holy Ground CD of 1997 and again by Dr. Ardelle Ries and The Augustana Choir on the Nuper Rosarum Flores: Now the Rose Blossoms CD from 2007. The recent Cypress Choral Music publication of How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place is James Neff’s 17th publication. Published

extensively in the USA, this is the first choral work of Neff to be published by a Canadian music publisher. James Neff was born in 1934 in Illinois where he completed his elementary and secondary schooling. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Music degree from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, in 1956. In the same year, he married the love of his life, Jo Ann. In 1958 he received a Master of Arts degree from the University of Denver and pursued graduate studies later at the University of Iowa. James taught

three years of senior high school music in the U.S. before the family moved to Camrose. Through numerous positive choral music experiences within the church community, Neff fell in love with choral music already as an adolescent. At the age of 20 James wrote his first composition, a song cycle for baritone and piano. His primary musical inspiration stems from Bach, Brahms, and Hindemith. Aside from his devotion to choral music, Neff has written music for solo piano, solo voice and piano, and string quartet.

Thoughts About Multiple Killing Prevention In his Christmas Parliamentary Report, it was with reluctance that Kevin Sorenson, MP for Crowfoot, felt a need to talk of the morbid incident of the shooting of students and teachers in a Connecticut school. In his column Standing Up to Violent Crime (The Camrose Booster, Dec. 25, 2012), he took the opportunity to connect the story to the success of Canada’s PC majority government in passing ‘tough-on-crime’ legislation, for which, he added, electors had said they wanted. I, like Sorenson, am also reluctant to start the new year with a column on the subject of gun control, especially when we are still mourning with families of victims of the recent tragedy in Connecticut, On the other hand, it seems appropriate to ‘strike while the iron is hot’. As welders know, a cold iron will not bend. Similarly, gun control is presently a ‘hot’ topic and therefore an opportune time for serious discussion and, hopefully, action to reduce the misuse of firearms. It seems ironic that each incident of multiple killings by gunfire is used as ammunition to support both sides of the gun debate. The National Rifle Association (NRA) argues that more guns are needed so that “good guys with guns can protect themselves from bad guys with guns.” The other side argues that more gun control is required to limit the number as well as the type of guns in the possession of individuals. Why, they ask, would an individual want or need a military style gun with high-capacity magazine that enables a gunman to spray bullets like a garden hose sprays water. One little body at Sandy Hook School was reported to have been riddled with eleven bullets. Is there evidence that tough-on-crime legislation prevents murder – multiple or otherwise? It is widely known that United States of America has some of the most lax laws concerning possession of guns and that their crime laws are some of the most harsh in the western world. Texas, in particular, is reputed to have the highest percentage of inmates on death row as well as actual executions. The death penalty seems not to be effective in preventing murder there. A letter by Brian J. Sproule, MD, professor emeritus, Edmonton, appeared in The Edmonton Journal, Dec. 21/12. He received his medical training at the University Hospital in Edmonton, practiced one year in small town Alberta, four years in Texas, and some time as a visiting professor at a London, England, hospital. While training and practicing in Alberta, Sproule saw one gunshot wound – a suicide. While he was in Texas, the emergency room treated 15 to 30 gunshot wounds a month plus received several dead bodies a month. In England, he was not aware of any gunshot wounds while there. So, how do we prevent multiple killings with guns? Surely both sides of the debate could agree that private individuals have no need for a military style gun, the sole purpose of which is to enable one person to quickly kill many people gathered in such places as schools, malls, theatres and the like. Time after time, perpetrators of gun crimes have been diagnosed to have some form of mental illness and/or social dysfunction – addictions, anger, envy, hate, feelings of isolation and alienation – and punitive measures, even as severe as the death penalty, would not have prevented the crime. We therefore should strive to identify and treat mental illness before crimes are committed – not an easy task but well worth pursuing. I believe, too, that we should look at our culture which, in increasing measure, glamorizes violence and, indeed, is entertained by it – in sports, movies, television and even children’s video games. What one sees often is eventually viewed as the norm. Together we can choose to save lives by limiting the gun types available to individuals, by enhancing treatment for mentally ill persons, and by making non-violence the norm. Let's do it!

Home Depot supports Open Door Submitted

The Camrose Open Door Association celebrated receiving a $15,000 grant from The Home Depot Canada Foundation for its affordable housing project. The grant is part of the foundation’s grant program and will be used to upgrade the furnace and lighting in the Open Door’s Youth Housing Facility. As with many older buildings, the air circulation was not very good resulting in cold and hot spots during winter and stifling heat during the summer. The Open Door provides young adults with emergency and transitional housing and support in the Maurer Hall building at the Keystone Centre. Most of the more than 60 young adults provided with shelter in a year at this facility come from unstable housing situations resulting in decreased school attendance, difficulty maintaining employment and reduced health and wellbeing. The Open Door provides an alternative to couch surfing and housing insecurity by providing a place to stay with a range of supports. Youth staying in the facility learn important life skills such as cooking, cleaning and maintaining an apartment and are expected to be in school or looking for employment during the day.

“This project wouldn’t have been possible without the funding generously provided by The Home Depot Canada Foundation,” said Randal Nickel, executive director of the Open Door. “We appreciate the support from The Home Depot Canada Foundation for affordable housing projects like ours across Canada. County increases animal patrols By Murray Green

SMITH and HOLOWACHUK On Tuesday, October 23, Robert Smith and Bernice Holowachuk of Camrose exchanged marriage vows in the Camrose United Church with Mary Ann Pastuck officiating. The couple will honeymoon in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

With stray dogs becoming an increasing problem in Camrose County, council decided to add more patrols for 2013. Protective services manager Mike Kuzio recommended to council that Camrose County award Old MacDonald Kennels the animal control contract. Councillor Doug Lyseng supported the move by making the motion. "Old MacDonald Kennels presented a very competitive

proposal. Alberta Animal Service has been Camrose County's animal control agency for the last few years and they have done an admirable job; however, as animal complaints increase, I feel Old MacDonald Kennels could prove to be more cost effective and the geographical location of the kennel will better serve the rate payers," said officer Mike. Old MacDonald Kennels will provide six patrols a month from March 1 to Oct. 31 at a cost of $85

per patrol ($510 per month), four patrols a month from Nov. 1 to Feb. 28 at a cost of $85 per patrol ($340 per month). The boarding fees are $25 per night (maximum three days). Old MacDonald Kennels is a no kill animal shelter and pound. Dogs stay with them until adopted. The kennel will also make extra trips for seized, impounded animals or special patrols as requested.

As much as the coming of a new year is a time to look forward to an exciting and uncertain future, it is also a time to look back and reflect on what has happened over the past year. It has been an interesting year in the news provincially, nationally, and even internationally. It has also been a year filled with touching stories, important milestones, and significant issues locally. Here's how those top stories unfolded this year in the pages of The Camrose Booster. 3 – The Camrose County has submitted its portion of the workbook provided by municipal affairs on the Village of New Norway dissolution study. Last summer a petition from the electors of the Village of New Norway asked for a dissolution study to consider the financial, administrative and service impacts of the village becoming a hamlet within the Camrose County.

3 – The Camrose Primary Care Network is offering an innovative and collaborative program, the Geriatric Assessment Program (GAP). This is available in Camrose and area for individuals 65 years and older who are experiencing: frequent falls, signs of memory loss or established dementia, bladder concerns, decreased mobility, difficulty coping in their own homes or communities. 10 – The Canadian Bull Congress will begin year number 26 the same way it finished year 25. "We're going to have another sell-out," said Canadian Bull Congress committee chair Steve Kushnerik. The Canadian Bull Congress has grown into one of Alberta's premiere cattle marketing events with an average annual attendance of 7,500.

10 – Beaver member Adam Kuefler, of the Sixth Camrose Scouts, gives leader Peter Kritch a face full of whipped cream during a regular meet-

ing of the group at Camrose United Church on Jan. 4. Members were allowed to throw a pie for every $500 they collected during a recent popcorn sale fund-raiser. Adam sold a lot of popcorn and earned the right to cream five leaders. 17 – For the second straight year, the Camrose Kodiaks made three changes to their line-up during the final trade deadline on January 10.

31 – The Hospice Society of Camrose and District has gone from a great idea to charitable status in less than a year. The society received charitable status on Jan. 24. 7 – Camrose curling fans will have a few options for which team to cheer at the Boston Pizza Cup. Kevin Martin, Jamie King and Tom Appelman all have ties to Camrose. Tom Appelman rink will be one of the local favourites because Adam Enright of the Camrose area is throwing third rocks for his foursome. 14 – The City of Camrose and its residents are being encouraged to join the call for the adoption of a poverty reduction strategy for Alberta. Action to End Poverty in Alberta has initiated a petition urging the Government of Alberta to provide leadership, and for all political parties to adopt, support and legislate poverty reduction targets and timelines. 14 – The price of crude oil will continue to drive the Alberta economy forward in 2012 according to Todd Hirsch.

"We've had unusually stable prices for crude oil since last fall and that is one of the reasons our province has the best economy in the country," stated the ATB Financial senior economist during a Camrose Chamber of Commerce workshop last Tuesday morning.

14 – Camrose area band Punch Drunk Cabaret is back by popular demand. Encore performances are keeping the band very busy. The band will be rocking the Tap Room Bar and Brewery to help Sean Willms and the gang at the Norsemen Inn celebrate the first anniversary. 14 – Blues artist Kat Danser is back to where she started but, that's a good thing. She is returning to her rural roots in Camrose. This musician received her start in blues and country when she lived in our community as a social worker. She was the first performer for the Rose City Roots Music Society in February 2007. 21 – The annual trade show was another success with popular

booths and a petting zoo for children to enjoy. 21 – Camrose administration has been directed to investigate the legality of a Camrose Performing Arts Centre borrowing bylaw. "I am having administration do some follow-up on it just to put council and the general public at ease that we are not doing something illegal," explained Camrose mayor Marshall Chalmers. 21 – Alberta NDP opposition leader Brian Mason is asking people to send their power bills to him. “January’s power bill is a real eye popper for most homeowners,” said Mason, in a plea to receive some answers. “My family’s bill was double what it was a year ago. I want to table as many power bills as I can to prove to this government that deregulation is hurting Alberta families.” 28 – The philosophy of protecting valuable farm land from easy subdivision won in the end. Camrose County councillors defeated a motion that would have made it easier for ratepayers to skip a step in the subdivision process. 28 – Both of the senior basketball teams at the Camrose Composite High School will enjoy the luxury of playing on their court for provincials. CCHS's own version of March madness will be coordinating the 24 teams, officials, scorekeepers and hosting a banquet in just three days, March 15 to 17.

28 – Doug Burkard of Rosalind reached the milestone of 150 blood donations at the Canadian Blood Services clinic held at the Chester Ronning School on Feb. 23. Phlebotomist Tracey Oranchuk of Edmonton extracted the blood to help others who need transfusions. Doug began giving blood when he turned 18, back when he could give only two donations a year. He said his target is 200 donations.

March 6 – The number of Camrose residents who feel there is a need for a community public transportation system is increasing. Ninety-two per cent of 1,019 residents surveyed in a recent Community Transportation Survey said there is a need for such a service, up from 75 per cent who felt the same way five years ago.

6 – Ladies' barrel racer Crystal Shaw of Daysland finished third at the Canadian Finals Rodeo in 2010. She wants to return for another shot at the title. A new season starts with the Camrose Spring Classic Pro Rodeo from March 16 to 18. Students and teachers from high schools around the province gathered in Kananaskis country for Inside Education’s Navigate 2012: A Water Literacy Youth Summit. 10 – The bad news from the Camrose Police Service's 2011 crime analysis released March 30 is that the number of reported criminal offences was seven per cent higher than it was in 2010. The good news is that the number of reported criminal offences was 18 per cent lower than the 10-year average. 10 – Rosebud School of the Arts student Laura Gillespie will take centre stage in the Arthur Miller classic The Crucible when it is performed on the Rosebud Studio stage April 13 to 28. 1 – There's an old saying in the sports world that it doesn't matter how you win as long as you win. PC Verlyn Olson didn't receive quite as many votes he did in the 2008 provincial election, but he won anyway and will be going back to the legislature as the MLA for Wetaskiwin-Camrose. 1 – Members of the Rotary Interact Club at Camrose Composite High School were able to experience life in the developing country of Belize during their Easter break. "It was eye-opening to say the least," said Kirsten Gibson, one of the 12 teens from Grades 11 and 12 who made the trip. 8 – Retired Camrose ultra sound technician Jim Sawchyn has a portable machine and he will travel. "Last fall I did a little bit of exploring about the Flying Doctors of Canada. I was given an ultra sound machine by a company just out of Seattle, Washington," explained Jim. "They donated the machine with the only catch that the machine is left in the country we are going to. In our case, we are going to El Salvador, which I know very little about."

8 – Harvey Litke enjoyed travelling the Hawaiian Islands so much he wanted to do it twice. While most people struggled to circle the islands in 90 days, Harvey led the participants with 4,362,700 steps and 3,305 kilometres. More than 415 participants joined the Camrose Primary Care Network's 90-day Holoholo Virtual Trek that motivated local residents to walk, run, swim, bike, dance and get active. The virtual trek was created to provide a fun way for people to work towards a healthier way of life. 8 – City council has accepted a proposal from Stantec, of Red Deer, for the development of an integrated solid waste management master plan that will establish a strategic direction and planning framework for waste management and diversion in Camrose for the next 25 years. 15 – Volunteers in Camrose and Wetaskiwin donned aprons and went to work serving hungry customers at McDonald's on McHappy Day May 2. With good weather, the airport will be one of the busiest in Western Canada again with around 150 aircraft and about 1,300 people stopping in for breakfast on Sunday, May 27. 15 – It didn't take long for Verlyn Olson to start taking appointments as the new minister of Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. Olson was caught by surprise when Premier Redford called him to ask that he take on the new portfolio after serving just a bit over a year as the Justice Minister. 22 – The Canadian Auto Workers union employees that staff EVRAZ Camrose are still locked out with no signs of going back to work or to the bargaining table. However, EVRAZ says they continue to talk with representatives from the CAW. Union employees began to picket outside of the EVRAZ property after 9 a.m. on May 5. 22 – The majority of Camrose residential property owners will be paying approximately 3.62 per cent more in taxes for municipal purposes in 2012. A tax bylaw passed by City council May 14 sets a rate of 10.304 mills for residential properties and 16.0469 mills for non-residential properties. 29 – Some of the top barbershop singers in the province will be on the Bailey Theatre stage at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 16. The local group Three Plus One Barbershop Quartet is made up of four local Camrose pastors who sing a variety of familiar melodies in the traditional barbershop style. 29 – City of Camrose signing officers have been authorized by City council to enter into a contract with Clark Builders for the construction of the performing arts centre on the property of the University of Alberta. Total projected cost of the building, subject to a legal review of the construction contract, will be $14,650,000.

14 – Alberta Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service Foundation major gifts manager Jane Styles reported that STARS helicopters have been called to Camrose 10 times this year and 48 times in the last 19 months. 7 – Big Valley Jamboree had a sell-out for the first time in its 20-year history. "This has been a goal of the festival for the last 20 years," said BVJ producer Larry Werner. "It just goes to show that our fan support continues to grow stronger as the years go on, and for that we are extremely grateful. This is a proud moment for everyone on our team. It will be something we remember for a long, long time." 7 – The Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for Alberta announced it would be holding public hearings in September for residents to share views on a proposal for new boundaries. Alberta would gain six electoral districts because of the increase in its population from 2,974,807 in 2001 to 3,645,257, according to the 2011 census. The commission proposes one new electoral district in northern Alberta, two new electoral districts in and around the city of Edmonton, two new electoral districts within the city of Calgary, and one new electoral district in southern Alberta.

14 – Dr. John Varty and his fiance, Molly Daley, arrived in Camrose on their TractorCanada tour. The duo were towing a little house on wheels across Canada with a Massey Ferguson tractor in an attempt to publicly and visually address issues facing the agriculture industry. Varty felt it was time to give a new face to the challenges farmers face, whether they be the high cost of feeding cattle, the low prices received from the sale of pork, or the need to build a manure remediation pit.

21 – Dr. R. Bibby gave written notice to the City of Camrose that, as of Sept. 1, Camrose Animal Clinic would no longer be providing pound or rescue centre services. "Owing to staffing changes, the heavy private program subsidies required, the sharp decline in public support and adoptions over the past two years, and a lack of compensation for professional and out of hours time spent on the program, we are fully terminating the program," said Dr. Bibby. 21 – Camrose City council committed itself to building the new City Hall on the present location. Council felt moving the City Hall elsewhere would reduce the vibrancy of the downtown core.

21 – The Heart and Stroke Clinic at St. Mary's Hospital and the Camrose Primary Care Network announced a partnership on a program to screen for individuals with arterial fibrillation – otherwise known as an irregular heard rhythm – that may lead to stroke. PCN clinical manager Colleen McKinstry said simply performing a 60 second pulse check on a patient already sitting in the clinic has the potential to yield far-reaching results. She said if a patient known to be at risk is given the option of treatment to prevent a stroke he/she will be in favour of it.

Richard Pelz, from the Bittern Lake area, was named as having the most attractive vegetable garden, while Randy Meadahl, of the Kingman area, received the most points in the newly developed acreage (two years and under) category. No winner was determined in the urban yards category. 28 – The City of Camrose announced the distribution of water conservation kits containing a low-flow showerhead, kitchen swivel aerator, bathroom aerators, toilet tank bags, an adjustable flapper, shower timer, leak detection tablets, teflon tape and tips on what people can do to conserve water. 28 – Camrose County gave second and third readings to a redistricting bylaw allowing for the purchase and use of lands by Cornerstone Christian Academy. 28 – Kyler Charchun was preparing for the western championship in peewee baseball.

From the powerful yet fuel-efficient EcoBoost engine to the mighty 6.2 litre V8, the most powerful eight-cylinder engine in the segment, F-150 offers an engine to meet the needs of every customer. Each engine across the F-150 lineup is mated to a fuel-saving electronic six-speed automatic transmission with tow/haul mode, with tow packages and STX series and above adding SelectShift capability. 18 – The University of Alberta Augustana Campus athletics program inducted Karel Lunde, Garry Gibson, Clarence and Irvin Servold, Yvonne Visser and the 1974-75 Vikings hockey team into the Vikings Wall of Fame. The Wall of Fame was established to celebrate the accomplishments of Augustana and CLC athletes as students and builders, and to draw attention to Augustana's commitment to mind, body and spirit. 18 – Paola Gianturco provided an advance preview of her book, Grandmother Power – Global Phenomenon during the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign provincial conference at Augustana. The book profiles grandmothers in 15 countries on five continents. 18 – On a trip to his native homeland of Guatemala, Jorge de Paz was honoured by outgoing tourism minister Pedro Pablo Duchez with the title of tourism ambassador. 11 – The Camrose Open Door Association celebrated the official opening of the Keystone Centre on the former Gardner College site. Keystone Centre provides both emergency housing and transitional shelter to youth who find themselves at risk. 11 – The annual Community Registration Night at the Camrose Community Centre saw more than 1,000 Camrose and area residents visit one or more of the 66 clubs and organizations that had set up displays. A common comment was "I can't believe there is so much to do in Camrose." 11 – The Camrose Railway Station closed its doors after welcoming guests from across Alberta and the western provinces, eastern Canada, Normal Wells and Yellowknife, as well as Singapore, England, Australia, Germany, Costa Rica, Norway, Northern Ireland, South Africa and the United States. 11 – Bailey Theatre Society vice president Bill Walker told City council that the Society may have to close the Bailey's doors in December if its financial situation does not improve.

25 – Canadian Football League fans decked out in the jerseys of their favourite teams climbed aboard the Grey Cup 100 Train in Camrose. Tourism Camrose coordinator Hazel Cail was impressed with the large number of residents, including school children, who turned out to greet the train and view its displays. 25 – Camrose Ski Club was working hard to make the ski trails safer by building a wider bridge across Stoney Creek, improving the sight lines and sloping the hills to make them less steep. 25 – Camrose Police Commission chair Lowell Knutson told City council that while Camrose Police Service expects to be within its approved budget for 2012 and is on target to meet budgeted fine and sale of materials revenue, legal costs are becoming an increasing concern. Chief of Police Darrell Kambeitz told council that the legal costs for the Service are 300 per cent greater than the amount that was included in the 2012 budget. 25 – Farm Credit Canada's Drive Away Hunger tractor tour was getting ready to visit Camrose.

2 – Former Camrose resident Dr. Merril Knudtson received the country's highest civilian honour when he was named a Member of the Order of Canada. Dr. Knudtson has made significant contributions to cardiology and health care. He was one of the first cardiologists in the country to perform a coronary angioplasty, a procedure which helps to open a narrow or blocked artery in the heart. 2 – Camrose Police Service announced it would be conducting additional checkstops over the Thanksgiving long weekend as part of Operation Impact. 2 – Jackie McCelland was named Centra Cam Vocational Training Association Volunteer of the Year. McClelland has been a regular volunteer at Centra Cam's Outlet Store.

9 – Cargill broke ground for a proposed new canola crushing plant south of Camrose on Dried Meat Lake Road. "We have purchased the land and we intend to have the facility ready in time for the 2014 canola harvest," said Cargill communications manager Brigette Burgoyne. 9 – The Rotary Club of Camrose was setting its sights on the spring of 2013 for the start of construction on a new Camrose Youth Centre. The club was verbally assured that the City of Camrose would donate the land as well as pick up the servicing costs.

9 – Wetaskiwin-Camrose MLA and Agriculture Minister Verlyn Olson told the Camrose Chamber of Commerce that the Alberta government is placing more emphasis on developing new markets for agricultural products outside Canada. Olson said the two major markets the province is targeting right now are India and China, both of which have growing middle classes with disposable income. Diallo is a three-time Juno award-winning guitarist and multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer who has garnered huge success across the country. 20 – Camrose Public Library director Deb Cryderman told City council that 84,024 people had visited the library to the end of October, 2012, up 25 per cent over the same time last year when the total number of visitors for the entire year was 81,215. 27 – Camrose Police Service announced it would be stepping up the number of checkstops in December in an effort to keep impaired drivers off the road. Police also announced they will continue to seek the assistance of the public in stopping impaired driving through the Curb the Danger program. 27 – For the first time in the history of the Charlie Killam School, the girls garnered the title of Battle River Junior High Athletic Association Regional Volleyball gold medallists. 27 – The annual Stamp Around City Center Camrose program was off to a good start. The Camrose Royal Purple made a donation of $200 to the Merry Christmas Fund Dec. 6. Presenting a cheque to Merry Christmas Fund representative Sid Brown was Camrose Royal Purple member Joan Lee. The Merry Christmas Fund met its goal of raising $30,000 prior to the delivery of hampers to the less fortunate on Dec. 22.

Tom Coultis has been awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his service to Canada and his community. Coultis served with the 14th Calgary Tanks for 12 years starting on Dec. 12, 1944. In 1956 he moved to Camrose and served nine years as an instructor for the 19th Alberta Dragoons. "We trained at the old Drill Hall here in Camrose," said Coultis. Coultis instructed rifle range, first aid and drill for the Camrose Air Cadets from 1956 to 1968. "It was in one of the years that I was with the Air Cadets that we won the award for being the top Air Cadet Corps in western Canada," said Coultis. Coultis has been a member of the Royal Canadian Legion since 1946. "I joined the Legion in Stettler in 1946 when I was still in the army," he said. "I had difficulty getting in because I was only 18 at the time." Coultis served as sergeant at arms in the Stettler and Camrose branches for 40 years and was a member of the Legion executive for 45 years, including one year as president in 1976. For 50 years he prepared the stage for Remembrance Day services, maintained and mapped the graves of Legion veterans, and placed crosses on the graves of veterans during Decoration Day events. "The Legion has been my second home," he said. "I think I have spent more time here than I have at home. When I was sergeant at arms I practically lived here. We didn't call the police in those days if there was trouble at the Legion; we looked after things by ourselves. There were many times when I had to close the smoke shop I was operating downtown for a few hours in order to deal with a problem at the Legion." Coultis received a life membership in the Legion in 1983 and the Meritorious Service Medal in 1996. In 2002 he was presented with the Palm Leaf, the Legion's highest honour. Coultis was also awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002, the Canadian Forces decoration with clasp for 22 years in the army, the Alberta Centennial Medal for his service in attending Legion funerals, and the 125th anniversary of Canada medal for the work he did training other Legion colour parties throughout Alberta in the proper presentation of the colours. "The Legion colour party was invited to many building openings and cenotaph dedications," he said. Along with his work with the Legion, Coultis was a member of the Camrose Police Service from 1956 to 1970.

The mixed Augustana curling rink had a 4-1 record to place second in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference regional bonspiel on Nov. 30 to Dec. 2 in Grande Prairie. Lakeland was the only team to go

undefeated and finish ahead of the Vikings. The men's squad was bunched in with several other rinks at 3-3. Grant MacEwan placed on top with a 6-0 mark. Augustana's women's squad didn't fair as well. The team went winless in six games.
