Virtual graduation ‘new normal’ due to COVID-19

BY LUIS CASTILLA Staff Writer H undreds of East Los Angeles College graduates of the class of 2020 will gather virtually to be recogni ed in the district s first e er virtual commencement ceremony on June 9.

Due to the ongoing COV ID-19 pandemic, the Los Angeles Community College District will host its first virtual recognition ceremony in place of a traditional graduation ceremony.

Under governor Gavin Newsom’s current orders, which prohibit large gatherings, a commencement ceremony, as it used to be held, is impossible. his first o its ind cere on will ensure that the health and safety of the graduates and their families is not threatened by attending a large in-person gathering.

Graduates received an email with information on how to attend the virtual ceremony. raduates ere also as ed to send in photos of themselves as well as uotes or a ideo ac age the district is preparing.

Any graduate who did not

submit a photo and quote will have their name listed at the end of the presentation.

Class of 2020 celebrates with quarantine limitations class or the department that they

Graduating during quarantine has affected many students at all levels of education.

Due to Covid-19, events of mass gatherings across the world have been postponed or canceled, but it has also affected events or gatherings at home such as birthday parties, baby showers, weddings and graduation parties perfect for the springtime and sunny weather days.

It's a big milestone for students, some even become the first to graduate college in their families.

Many wait years for the night of graduation, but because of Covid-19, the night that the graduate has been dreaming of for years has been snatched away.

Schools are giving the students a chance to return and walk the stage for the 2021 ceremony and be recognized with the rest of the class of 2021.

It takes away that same joy that the student would have felt the day of their original graduation date.

It feels like a pity gesture.

Students don’t get to graduate with the classmates they started with.

The graduate may not know any of the students of the 2021

Some of the professors may have retired and may not see the students on the new date of the ceremony, the graduates may not properly thank the professors for giving them the proper guidance to earn the degree that they have worked for.

This year’s ceremony is now one big power point from ones living room or bedroom.

There's no feeling of preparation for the student.

They might have had plans of a big party and invited as many loved ones as possible.

This would have given students a chance to celebrate with the ones that helped them get through the long nights of studying to get the degree they always dreamed of.

Now, it’s kind of risky throwing a big party and possibly getting a ticket for large gatherings.

Some people, in celebration, create car lines and honk, recognizing the achievement of one.

Graduates may want to hug the ones that are driving, but can’t because of social distancing and keeping each other safe.

Regardless of graduating on stage or not, every student should be proud to achieve a college degree, making their families proud.

Staying motivated through quarantine

BY MELVIN BUI Staff Writer Staying at home during quarantine can cause students to lose motivation in their school work due to the repetitive routines and lack of socialization.

Something people can do to clear their minds and relax is to take a break when needed. Taking breaks allows the body and brain to unwind. This can cause the accumulated stress to disappear in a matter of moments.

Some people are motivated by their peers. The competitive atmosphere makes them strive to the best of their ability.

Some people feed off of the energy around them and with no one around, this leaves them in an awkward position. Students can call or text their friends and loved ones

when they need some reassurance and moral support.

Checking in on people during times of peril is crucial because e er one is in a fight or ight t e of mentality, since no one wants to become sick.

Checking in on people doesn't re uire ace to ace interaction as people are used to, but getting in contact by any means possible to let the other person know that they are still important and cherished.

Sometimes it means the world to people when you check in and talk to see if they're going through any rough patches.

Making a weekly schedule or making a planner could help stressed out students manage their time better.

When there’s enough time to work without rushing, stress is almost nowhere to be found. It's hel ul to a e a schedule or to do list because it doesn't require much

thought to think of what task is about to come next . “ I am trying to stay on a steady schedule where I work on the same days each week to get my stuff done.

My motivation during quarantine has been to pass my classes so I will be able to transfer in the F all to a Cal State,” said East Los Angeles College student Albert Meija.

Some students are using this time to bond with friends and loved ones to stay healthy and mentally composed.

It's important to take care of oneself before helping other people with their problems.

Talking to friends and loved ones can help motivate and remind someone that they are not alone in this epidemic.

Some people aren't able to focus because of the lack of nutrition from not eating throughout the day, so setting alarms or meal prepping can help remind people to eat food for

energy. Staying hydrated can help ensure people’s good health. It helps body movement when someone is dehydrated.

It's hard for some people to think while being at home all day during quarantine. Going for a stroll or stretching can help blood flow, which makes people breathe more oxyge n. “ I still workout daily, take walks out so that I get fresh air and I usually interact with my family and cat,” said ELAC student Aidan Soriano.

Listening to music can help people focus and forget about their problems. This is the perfect time for people to look for new albums or genres of music to expl ore. They can talk to friends and ask for some music recommendations, this can also be another way for someone to get some socialization during quarantine. www.ELACCampusNews.com

CARES Act pays reperations

BY ANDREW AYALA Staff Writer The second set of Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act payouts will be sent out to East Los Angeles College students who automatically qualify for a payment.

The CARES Act was signed into law on March 27 to assist those in financial need during the 19 pandemic.

The final cover letter on the ct ro ets e os sa s that there will be about $14 billion in funds distributed to institutions of higher education and $ 12.5 6 billion of that will be distributed based on student enrollment.

ELAC is receiving $10,797,043 in total allocations with the minimum allocation to be awarded or e ergenc financial aid grants to students is $5,398,522.

This means that about half of the funds should be going back to students in the form of a disbursement. he first set o a ents rolled out last week in the form of a refund to bank accounts linked to B ankMobile.

Students will receive notice via email or text message with the total amount and details as to when the funds will be sent.

“ Acts like these are important in these times because of the economic relief many people can have. This economic relief can help a student focus better on their school work rather than financial concerns,” said Christian B ustamante, a career guidance counseling assistant at the ELAC South Gate campus and political science major at Cal State University Long B each.

B ustamante said he is hoping to gain certification or hle oto and medical laboratory practice in order to remain a viable candidate in the future job market with the money. “ The act requires that 5 0% go directly to the students and that’s what we’re doing right now. We already got out money to 10,000 students and that was about $ 3 00 to each, which is about $3,000,000.

We still have $ 2,000,000 to give out, but they’re going over a few things before they distribute,” said ulie ena ides ice resident o Student Services.

Only students who are eligible or itle or a recei e the emergency grants.

This includes students who are U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens, students with a valid Social Security number, students who are registered with the selective service, students with a high school diploma or GED

and students who are in programs that lead to a degree or certificate B enavides said that the district receives and designates the funds per college and goes based off of a database to decide who gets the payout. “ Unfortunately the department doesn’t allow us to use these funds for undocumented, international or non atriculated students e are or ing ith the financial aid o fice and ocusing on a lanning committee to see how we can help the other groups in our equitable basis,” said B enavides.

B ustamante said that the opening of alternative applications for those ho ere not reci ients o financial aid or who are undocumented was a great effort to combat the department of education’s stance on not using the CARES funds for those students.

The California Community Colleges website says that the 50% of funds that are left over after distribution may be used to cover costs of converting certain courses to distance education due to the interru tion caused the 19 pandemic.

The district has awarded scholarships for equipment, lent out chromebooks, forgiven library fees and holds on accounts due to equipment not being returned because of the circumstances.

that when considering many factors, surveyors predicted a decrease in student enrollment for the upcoming fall semester.

Arenas said under the circumstances, we can ex pect the return of two types of students to community colleges.

One is UC/ CSU students who are under financial strain loo ing to take general education classes at a community college and people out of work who want to use this time to continue their degree or earn a new one.

Current students should prepare for the impact on general education classes and look to enroll as soon as the can u er classes are filling fast and fall is ex pected to be the same, if not worse. t is i ortant or students to constantly check their LACCD email because information is changing quickly and keeping up with the changes being made can help assist students make decisions in their best interest,” Arenas said.

Staff Writer Students of the Los Angeles Community College District participated in a survey for the Spring that focused on understanding the effects of the transition to online learning.

This one-of-a-kind survey was administered in April in response to the COV ID19 pandemic and the lack of understanding about how students were coping during this time, along with how smooth the transition was overall.

There were 9,3 7 0 students who completed the survey, with 2,4 5 3 students being enrolled in East Los Angeles College.

The survey was broken down into four categories: whether students had access to technology, general questions about the LACCD transition response, students personal ex perience with the transition and what the best medium would be for students to use in order to receive follow-up information.

Of the 9,3 7 0 students surveyed, a majority of them appeared to be capable of handling the transition, with

of students having regular access to a computer and 14.5% having access only sometimes.

The survey found that 63.8% of students use a computer to access their classes.

Smartphones were the runner-up with 19.9% .

The survey also showed that most students are familiar with Canvas, which is one of the most common platforms for online learning.

A majority of the students agreed that they have a quiet place to do their schoolwork, but 23 .2% disagreed with that statement and 10.6 % strongly disagreed. That is about 3,167 students who are having trouble finding a lace to stud and do their schoolwork.

In retrospect, 5 1.4 % of students agreed that they have enough free time to attend their classes during this time and 23.9% strongly agreed.

Most students also agreed that the can figure out ho to be prepared for online classes, or strongly agreed that they are prepared.

That still leaves roughly 2,7 17 students saying they are not sure if they are prepared or who need e tra hel figuring it out Despite the percentages of

students saying they are able to handle the transition, questions a b o u t s t u d e n t ’s p e r s o n a l ex periences also revealed that about 6 ,7 3 7 students are dealing with an increase in worry and anx iety and that 6 ,4 8 0 of those students are dealing with average amounts of stress or more than average amounts of stress.

The survey questions that focused on student transition overall, remained consistent with typically over 6 5 % of students.

They agreed that they had access to basic online learning tools and that they understand what is ex pected of them in their classes.

5 3 .4 % of students agreed that they have communication with their instructors in all their classes and 4 0.7 % in some of their classes.

The questions that focused on the LACCD transition response revealed that most students felt informed about changes made in their colleges due to COV ID-19.

Although most students have access to the information and tools they need, the survey showed a shift when students answered questions about whether they were using their respective college resources.

When it came to follow-up information, most students chose not to answer. Students were asked if they would like more information about academic supports like the Academic Support Center, NetTutor, Admissions and Records, Academic Counseling, Disability Support Services, F inancial Aid, the Library and Transfer Applications.. n or ation on financial aid was the most requested with 4 2.7 % . Other than that, the percentages remained under 4 0% for the rest of the questions.

According to 93 .9% of students, email continues to be the most useful form of communication between them and their colleges. Email was also the medium used to share the survey.

The insight provided by the survey, according to the school email, was to help each college improve by having students share their expe riences.

Students were given the option to share additional thoughts and some students shared that they would like more support with resources like financial aid, grants and even one-on-one support, something that was previously ex clusive to students when they met with a counselor on-campus.

Tech companies shift remote work culture

BY VANESSA RAMOS Staff Writer Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey informed employees that they have the option of working from home permanently, even after lockdown of stay-at-home orders, as long as employees’ roles enable them.

Twitter aims to go fully virtual and wants to reach its goal of supporting a distributed workforce capable of working from anywhere.

The trend of remote work from home and learning from home has developed a change in the way that tech companies are thinking about moving forward for their softwares. In early March, Twitter began to allow employees to work from home.

Tech companies encouraging this tactic include Microsoft, Google, and Amazon. Google and F acebook are allowing work from home until the end of 2020, while Amazon and Microsoft ex tended policies until the end of October reported F orbes. itter is the first edia co an to encourage employees to choose to work from home for good.

Twitter’s San F rancisco office will not open up its until September and continues to cancel business travel and in-person company events for the rest of the year.

Tech roles such as programming, software design, and editorials all can be transferred to remote working at home.

accustomed to working virtually at home.

Coordination of working remotely in a team will be different, especially if new team members are undertraining on a new operating system.

Security risk can be created if connecting from a home broadband that is not secured from cyber attacks.

On a long-term prospect, challenges for employees come down to not being able to physically interact with staff. Socializing in the o fice ill transcend to online connection which can challenge the o fice s ace culture o in erson meetings.

The long term distance from eing in the o fice li e setting can impact organizations’ culture of working as a team. “ B eing socially connected is our brain’s lifelong passion,” said Mattew Lieberman, a professor of psychology in the UCLA College of Letters and Science and a professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral science at UCLA’s Semel Institute for Neuroscience and H uman B ehavior.

Socializing with colleagues physically can broaden instant creativity, building ideas off each other in the office will never compare to working home alone waiting for group respondents.

As virtual work culture arises under COV ID-19 pandemic, companies like Twitter will need to adapt three tech strategies to grow in response to the shift of permanently working from home according to B usiness Insider: more virtual conferencing, cloud-based productivity suites like software or creativity suites that accelerates

growth during the transition and secure networking solutions.

Elac student to professor, Rico-Sanchez retires

BY SONNY TAPIA Staff Writer Professor Sylvia Rico-Sanchez has given her all as a journalism professor and Campus News co-advisor throughout her career giving praise to East Los Angeles College.

At the end of the Spring 2020 semester Rico-Sanchez will be retiring after 3 5 years of service to ELAC students and the community.

Rico-Sanchez has been a professor at ELAC since fall 198 5 , but was only made a full-time professor in the Journalism Department in 2013 .

B efore earning a full-time position at ELAC, she worked part-time for years, while also working in the City of Commerce public information o fice Teaching at ELAC came with previous knowledge about the campus as she had family that is alummi from ELAC. ather as the first erson in our family to graduate from college and he graduated from ELAC. My husband, sister, nieces, nephews, friends and I all graduated from ELAC. There was never any question that I would attend ELAC,” RicoSanchez said.

B eing a part of the college was instilled in her by her father who would plan her educational path telling ico anche to first go to ELAC and then attend Cal State University Los Angeles.

As a student at East Los Angeles College in the late ‘ 7 0s, she took a Journalism 101 class and remembered the final ro ect or the class he final ro ect as utting out an issue of East Los Angeles College Campus News. Rico-Sanchez was chosen by fellow Campus News advisor and journalism professor Jean Stapleton, to be page one editor. “ That was a big responsibility, but my teacher Jean Stapleton, had faith that I could do it, so I did,” RicoSanchez said.

Using typewriters in the S-2 ungalo she anaged to finish the page using proportion wheels and rulers to size and place photographs.

This ex perience made her want to oin the sta o ficiall and as then later selected to be editor in chief of Campus News.

Later on in her college career as a student, Rico-Sanchez graduated from California State University F ullerton and received a call from Stapleton asking her if she would like to teach a class at ELAC. as oth attered and rightened at the prospect of doing meaningful work that impacted many lives,” Rico-Sanchez said.Demanding more from herself, she worked hard to become a full-time professor at ELAC. In 2013 , she was interviewd by the president, a dean and the journalism department chair for a teaching postion. Rico-Sanchez struggled answering a question and asked to start over.

She then made the same mistake again and finall ans ered correctl on the third try.The president of the school then asked her why she felt the college should hire her. “ B y then, I felt like a loser and like I had blown the interview. I

After the interview, she called her husband crying and ex plaining how everything went and then cut the call short due to another call coming in.

Once again this call was from the Journalism Department chair Jean Stapleton, to inform Rico-Sanchez that she had gotten the job.

As a professor she strived to give students her best by teaching the course materials and skills students could use outside of class in their professions.

She wanted to show her students the true value of an education so that they could have the same amount, or more, of the success that she had.Although these were her goals as a professor, she understood that students had to be willing to accept her guidance and ex perience. “ Achieving these goals is a twoway street. I can only do the best I can to reach students. It’s up to the students to accept what I offer,” Rico-Sanchez said.

Rico-Sanchez believes that she did her best as a professor in that respect.

Along with her career as a college professor, she also joined the Journalism Association of Community Colleges as the Southern California President.

She participated as a student in conventions in F resno and San Diego, receiving two first place trophies and one third place trophy, solidifying in her mind that she had as much talent as everyone else. “ Those competitions boosted my confidence and confir ed that as just as skilled as everyone else. I couldn’t refuse,” Rico-Sanchez said.

Rico-Sanchez would worry and dwell on issues at times in her career, but never to any avail. A piece of advice for her past self would be to not worry so much and just have fun. “ I would tell my past self to not orr as uch and to e satisfied with just doing my best. I would make myself realize there are forces beyond my control and not waste one minute of time reliving mistakes and disappointments,” Rico-Sanchez said.

She will miss being a part of this profession and serving her community that she grew up in. “ It was an honor to be part of this family of educators and to know I helped my community like other educators helped me,” Rico-Sanchez said. “ I will always feel love and loyalty to East Los Angeles College.”

Retiring Administration of Justice professor Janis Cavanaugh has dedicated her life to teaching students to succeed and nurturing future law enforcers.

She said she has been a part of many different disciplines and career paths.

Cavanaugh worked in law enforcement and education at the same time for much of her 43- year long career.

Cavanaugh started with the reserve police in 1972 when she was one of the first e ale o ficer to go on atrol in the City of El Monte. She joined the police force full time in 197 4 , during a time when women in law enforcement was not a normal occurrence. Cavanaugh said the department gave her a chance, and once they saw what she was capable of, they egan hiring ore e ale o ficers Cavanaugh began teaching in that very same career, becoming an instructor at the police academy.

She had taken firearms classes in college and was on a pistol team before joining the police force. H aving this background allowed Cavanaugh to easily win over those at the academy. “ When I became an instructor at the police academy, they accepted me immediately. They just said ‘ Oh,she knows how to shoot.’ Now knowing how to shoot and knowing how to teach are two different things,” Cavanaugh said.

Cavanaugh is just as skilled at teaching as she is adept at shooting. She said her style of teaching is hands-on, and that she is cognizant of students’ responses and needs. She said that the interaction with the students is one of the biggest things she will miss when she retires.

her Administration of Justice classes, she came to the realization that something more specialized was needed. This happened after the OJ Simpson trial ended in a way that surprised Cavanaugh and many others.

Cavanaugh started a class that centered around forensic science and evidence collecting. She went on to make the class accredited for Police Officer Standard Training. “ Oh my god, the people were swarming to it. The students were swarming to get into that class,” Cavanaugh said.

Cavanaugh made the leap to ELAC in 2005 when she was hired by Patrick H auser in the Administration of Justice department. She was brought in to run the forensic program at ELAC, and in 2007 became a full time professor. Since then Cavanaugh has continued to work in the department.

Since she started working in the El Monte police department years ago, she has held one motto in mind. When she was told she couldn’t accomplish something, she simply went down the correct path and kept going until she persevered.

This mindset is something that she has passed on to her students. One of the

students who took this to heart is a current professor at ELAC in the Administration of Justice Department, Cristie F ish.

She’s known Cavanaugh for about 15 years. F ish earned a degree and then went to an academy that Cavanaugh worked at.

F ish was inspired by Cavanaugh’s way of teaching forensics. She said that when Cavanaugh asked her where she saw herself going, F ish said she wanted to or in the field and teach Cavanaugh invited F ish to start teaching at in hen ish first returned to campus as an instructor, she was impressed with the way Cavanaugh stopped and chatted with so many of the students. “ It’s hard when you realize that she for her whole life has been a cop. People are sometimes surprised at that, because people think ‘ oh my gosh cops are so mean or hard headed.’ And then you meet Dr. Cavanaugh and you’re like ‘ what? ’ ” F ish said.

Cavanaugh has held different and ex citing career titles. She was an undercover cop, a chief of police and even worked as a medical assistant coordinator for the 198 4 Olympic Committee. And the entire time she’s taken on these exc iting jobs, she’s been teaching.

Cavanaugh said that with all this it ight e ti e to ta e a o ent and re ect “ I’m very much looking forward to retirement. If not just to slow down. just a little. because I’ve been going a hundred miles an hour for forty years,” Cavanaugh said.

ELAC Nursing Department says goodbye to a legend

BY JUAN CALVILLO Staff Writer Lurelean Gaines loves her students and the nursing program at East Los Angeles College, but she will be retiring, “ To put my house in order.” Most who know Gaines would understand that this is part of her humor.

She said her students often ask if her husband loves the ELAC campus. Gaines said they ask her this because she spends more time on campus and with the students in her department than at home.

Gaines has been at ELAC since the 197 0s and is the chairperson of the Nursing Department.

H er inspiration to become involved in the nursing profession stemmed from an acquaintance she knew as a young girl.

The acquaintance had a sister that was ill and spent time taking care of her. Gaines asked her father to take her to this acquaintance's home so that she could help. This simple interaction spoke volumes of the type of person Gaines would become.

Gaines said that originally the plan was to be a microbiologist, but she was constantly walking around interacting ith her class ates hen she finished her work. She realized the line of work she was studying was not for her.

Gaines’ parents told her to decide as to what ex actly she wanted to do and she decided on nursing. It was her desire to help people, and to stand up for the underdog, that pushed her into nursing. “ It was more gratifying. You know, I saw that I would be making a difference, doing something other than micro( biology) . You know micro( biology) was interesting, and I love the research aspect, but it just wasn’t enough,” Gaines said.

After finishing her degree at Los Angeles City College, she started working at Los Angeles County University of Southern California Medical Center.

There she was the charge nurse in the cardiology ward, with a staff of licensed ocational nurses and certified nursing assistants. During down-time, she started conducting classes with the nurses using situations with patients as learning tools.

Many of those that worked with her and learned from her went on to become Registered Nurses and LV Ns. This studentteacher interaction made her pause. A seed slowly began to grow in her mind about teaching. “ So I used to say, ‘ gosh teaching is for later. I’m saving that for later.’ Then I thought, here I digress, and I thought, ‘ oh I wanted to be a lawyer. You can always do law, when you get old,’” Gaines said.

Leaving the county hospital, she stayed working in the system moving into public health for some time. She received her Masters of Science in Nursing from Cal State University Los Angeles and decided it was time to teach. H er first job in teaching was at LACC. She also worked part time at ELAC. She said eventually she was hired at ELAC, but that initially some professors

were’nt welcoming. Luckily, Ginger Olson, a member of the higher committee at the time, made sure to expl ain that she was hired purely based on merit and skill.

Gaines said seeing this type of support was good, but that she was raised to be strong and outspoken. An uncle once called her an a a on des ite onl eing fi e oot fi e inches aines understood that it as meant to describe her strength of character.

At the time there weren’t many latinos in the nursing program, and some of the professors didn’t seem to like the changes happening on campus. Gaines said she always worked with and nursed latinos since her time in the county hospital and in public health. “ Most of the latinos were regulated to the LV N program. And that's what I saw and I thought, ‘ these students have taken all these courses and they're going to do LV Ns? ’” Gaines said.

The environment was interesting to Gaines, and over the years it has changed to be much more inclusive.

Walking into the Nursing Department the diversity is on display with Latino, Chinese, Armenian and even Russianspeaking students. Gaines' concern for her students is what drives her to make sure they have access to every opportunities possible. Where before some students would not try for the RN courses, Gaines encourages them to do it. It is this, coupled with her leadership in the Nursing Department and her determination, that is inspiring. Gaines has passed that on to her daughter, and as part of the department, she tries to pass it on to the students.

She said that just recently a student emailed her saying she was not sure she could do well without ex tra time. The student received an email with large letters saying “ relax” , followed by a simple but powerful message. “ You need to calm down. B ecause you know what you know. You’re very capable.

So get it done,” Gaines said.

B elieving in her students is second nature to Gaines. She said many of the students in the program and at ELAC have great potential. To her, giving students support is what helps students grow in the careers and directions they truly want to inhabit. ELACs Academic Senate has high praise for Gaines, who was once a V ice President of the Senate, thanking her for her time, and leadership over the decades of her work on campus. “ She has helped others see the big picture for serving our students and the community. H er insights have helped me understand how to advance the college as a well-run institution,” said Jeffery H ernandez, Presdient of the Academic Senate.

Jean Stapleton, Chair of the Journalism Department, has been friends with Gaines for many years. The friendship they have fostered over the years has carried them through meetings as part of the ELAC Academic Senate and as department chairs. Stapleton said their friendship just happened and that they simply gravitated to each other.

were once asked to separate during a meeting. This happened when a rather long-winded vice president got tired of the funny remarks the friends made about his drawn-out meetings. When Gaines was asked to move, Stapleton simply followed her and sat next to her again.

Gaines' work ethic and commitment to charities have always been seen with admiration from Stapleton. It was this, coupled with her commitment to her students, that Stapleton said was impressive. She said Gaines is constantly on campus early and will leave late because of this. “ I have so much respect for her because of her integrity. She cares so much about students and how what we do in the ( Academic) Senate or with the Nursing B oard or anything like that, ‘ H ow is it going to affect the students.’ That's always her first concern ho ill the students e affected by this. I think the world of her,” Stapleton said.

Retiring doesn’t mean Gaines will stop affecting change in countless other leadership roles. Gaines is vice president of the board of the Guibord Center, where all faiths come together and interact. She is also a leader at her Episcaplin Church as a canon.

Thrill and passion described the way 23 -year-old Peter LopezB olanos felt towards, competing for his last National competition before its cancellation due to Covid-19.

H e had been preparing to get to compete in a Nationals competition for three years.“ The cancellation of all National tournaments was very devastating to me because this was my senior year as a speech competitor.
