Scover Di SAN MARCOS School’s out, so that means it’s time to kick back, relax, and enjoy some needed downtime! Whether you’re new to San Marcos or have called this great city home for years, here are a couple of things to do for memorable summer fun.
Rio Vista Falls Dam Looking for a fun place to cool off? San Marcos is home to a water playground for kayakers, paddleboarders, tubers, and more! Swimmers will love exploring the deep watering hole, and sun bathers can grab a spot pretty much anywhere along the banks to soak up some rays. Make sure to take advantage of the Lion’s Club Tube Rental in the Rec Hall at City Park where you can float all day, as well as kick it up in the rapids. From start to finish, the float lasts an hour, and there’s a dedicated shuttle to bring you back so you can start the tubing fun all over again.
Float Fest The fifth annual Float Fest will take place on July 21 and 22 at Cool River Ranch, and if you love good music and enjoy floating down the San Marcos River, this event is for you! Two stages will host big headliners like Snoop Dogg, Tame Impala, Bassnectar, Lil Wayne, and lots more. Get all your floating in, then head to either stage when live music kicks off in the afternoon. Don’t feel like driving back and forth both days? Camping passes are included with all ticket prices, but spots are given on a first-come, first-served basis, so get in the day before and lock in your spot. While you can bring your own food and drinks, plenty of vendors will be on site! For more info and ticket prices, visit floatfest.net.

Ever heard of Fried Wickles®? This culinary brilliance is a must order — sweet and spicy pickle chips, served with chipotle ranch. Come on! This restaurant has been an iconic staple in the San Marcos dining scene since 1975, and is owned and operated by two Texas State graduates. Grins’ reputation for serving world-famous hamburgers is solid, so any one you order is going to make your taste buds smile. Go for the classic mushroom and Swiss, or kick it up with the jalapeño popper burger served with bacon, sliced jalapeños, and cream cheese. Of course, don’t forget a side of their Texas-sized onion rings — sliced, thick-cut jumbo onions made fresh on the spot!
