Discover

Columbia School’s out, so that means it’s time to kick back, relax, and enjoy some needed downtime! Whether you’re new to Columbia or have called this great city home for years, here are a couple of things to do for memorable summer fun.

Finger Lakes State Park Looking for some adventure?

Have a blast connecting with nature at Finger Lakes State Park, where you

can

explore

the

rolling

hills

via two ATV parks, challenge your strength on a 2.75-mile bike trail, camp out under the stars, or cruise down a 4.5-mile water trail. The state park used to be the site of an old strip mine that was converted for recreational purposes. And where coal once laid, water-filled pits were created in its place to become a premier playground for kayakers and canoeists.

Mizzou Aquatic Center

The perfect place to cool off in Columbia!

If you’re looking for some water fun in the sun or prefer to splash around indoors, you actually don’t have to travel far from campus. The Mizzou Aquatic Center is a premier facility for members to cool off in a variety of pools, and enjoy water activities from a good workout to laid-back leisure. The Tiger Grotto features an indoor resort-style setting with a lazy river and waterfall, hot tub, sauna, and steam room. If you prefer to soak up some rays, check out Truman’s Pond, where you can relax in a floating lounge chair and let the semester cares fall away.

Sip and Savor Whether you’re looking for a delicious cup of coffee or just need a place to chill, Columbia is full of places flowing with java goodness.

Best spot for specialty coffee

Shortwave Coffee 915 Alley A

This small-batch roasting company and coffee shop prides itself on giving customers a high-quality cup of goodness — or as Food & Wine magazine recently acknowledged, “satisfyingly simple”. Whether you fancy a steaming brew, an espresso classic, or a selection from a variety of teas, Shortwave is committed to providing a memorable sipping experience that includes offering coffee catering services and coffee-based educational events. Seasonal specialty coffees from around the world are available in house on Alley A or can be found throughout the city via wholesale or retail.

Lakota Coffee Company 24 S. Ninth St.

Lakota Coffee Company has been a longtime friend to Columbia since opening in 1992 in a nearly century-old building where students can savor a fresh cup of flavor. Small batches of coffee beans are roasted every day, and the around-the-world variety of beans available to order to enjoy a beverage

in house or to purchase for home is overwhelmingly awesome. Between espresso classics and an assortment of fresh-brewed coffee and specialty teas, Lakota has a great menu to discover your standard go-to beverage. And if you’re a fan of coffee ice cream and espresso, the coffee shake is a must try! 6

The Grind Coffee House

4603 John Gary Drive, Ste. 1 / 2601 Rangeline St. (coming soon)

The minute you walk through the doors of this coffee house, you’ll be captivated by the unique atmosphere and the smell of fresh ground beans percolating through the air. This award-winning venue is chock-full of caffeinated (and decaf) delights that range from fresh-brewed coffee to espresso favorites to blended ice drinks. Kick it up a tasty notch and order the Adult Chocolate Milk — a signature drink consisting of 42-hour cold brew, mocha, white mocha, and milk. Students will enjoy the late-night hours for study sessions during the semester, and to make it even better, The Grind stays open 24 hours during finals week.

Kaldi’s Coffee Roasting Co.

29 S. Ninth St.

Kaldi’s is a St. Louis–based business that opened a location on the corner of Ninth and Cherry in 2007, and has become well known among locals. Try the award-winning Espresso 700 — a signature blend that also works great for drip coffee — or one of their refreshing fruit smoothies. If you’re hungry,
