A Message from CAMP’s Executive Director My heart is bursting with gratitude! We just hosted the 8th Annual Starry Night CAMP Gala honoring CAMP’s founders, Dr. Chris Plauche Johnson, Dr. Fred McCurdy, and Dr. Robert de Lemos (dec.). Dr. Chris Plauche Johnson, was determined to make Matt’s dream come true. Friends, Dr. Fred McCurdy, and Dr. Robert de Lemos, shared her vision of a place where individuals with special needs could come together and reach their Maximum Potential. Thirty-seven years later CAMP is still making dreams come true for more than 850 CAMPers annually. And it’s all because of you.

Founders Honored at S Children’s Association for Maximum Potential got its Glamp on, September 10th, at the 8th Annual Starry Night CAMP Gala held at the San Antonio Country Club. The sold out event honored CAMP’s founders, Dr. Chris Plauche Johnson, Dr. Fred McCurdy, and Dr. Robert de Lemos (dec.). Founders Video “This year’s Gala was really remarkable,” said Executive Director, Susan Osborne. “It is the first time in over a decade the CAMP founders have been together.
It was awesome to catch up with so many of the original staff
members, volunteers, medical staff, and camper parents!” Joe Reinagel of KENS-5 served as emcee for the evening. The program included Hannah Burshnick, a CAMP volunteer, and Dawn Thurmond, a camper parent, who shared their remarkable CAMP experiences, as well as a performance by Ballet San Antonio featuring three dances, including one choreographed for the occasion by Artistic Director, Willy Shives. Generous CAMP sponsors, guests, and alumni gave an incredible $227,480 at the event to Strengthen and Inspire individuals with special needs.

From Timid Teen to Special Education Teacher At the tender age of 15, Hannah Burshnick spent her first week at CAMP. She admits that prior to coming to CAMP she had never met or spoken to an individual with special needs. But after one week Hannah was hooked. Today Hannah, once a timid teen, is a senior at the University of Texas at Austin pursuing a degree in Special Education. “CAMP has had a huge impact on my career path,” said Hannah who has observed that often in the public school setting, students with special needs are treated as outsiders. “I hope that when I’m a special education teacher that I will make sure that my students are included and given equal opportunities. I would have never had that perspective had it not been for CAMP, because that’s exactly what we give our campers...equal opportunity!” Click here to view video of Hannah’s inspiring story.
Autism Lifeline Links: Connecting the Dots Ask any family who has a child with an autism diagnosis, and they’ll probably tell you that locating and coordinating support services can feel like a full time job. Not anymore! Thanks to the efforts of local service providers, medical professionals, educators, and advocates passionate about helping people autism, parents and caregivers have a new option and it’s called Lifeline Links (ALL).
families with the services they need. “CAMP is one of a wide range of agencies that have partnered together to offer families one place to go to find every resource they need to address the challenges of living with an autism diagnosis,” said Susan Osborne, Executive Director.
Gone are the days when families needed to spend hours on the phone or surfing the web searching for service providers.
In addition to CAMP, ALL partner agencies include: Any Baby Can, The Arc of San Antonio, Autism Community Network, Autism Treatment Center, Brighton Center, The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio-Autism Clinic, Respite Care of San Antonio, and Special Reach.
Now families can authorize a participating agency (like CAMP) to enter their child’s information into TAVConnect, a HIPAAsecured database, and then ALL partner agencies will go to work connecting

So Long, Summer! They say, “Time flies when you’re having fun!” It must be true, because another summer season has flown by at the speed of light here at Children’s Association for Maximum Potential. In May, CAMP: A Space Odyssey, blasted off on a nine week mission to boldly go where no CAMPer has gone before. Each week CAMPers were strengthened and inspired as they explored the far reaches of their Maximum Potential. And while the summer is over, the memories made will last a lifetime.
