2015 CAMP Staff Make the It’s said, a picture is worth a thousand words, but for CAMP photographer, Marien Cavazos it was a 500 to 1000 word essay that earned her the top spot in the 2014 CAMP Scholarship Competition. The second place scholarship winner was Cherokee boy Chief Cabin Counselor, Annie Biondi. Staff and volunteers who completed the end-ofsummer survey, worked/volunteered at least three weeks, and were enrolled in a program of higher education were invited to submit an essay telling their experience of “The best day at Camp CAMP last summer.” Volunteers play a vital role in achieving CAMP’s mission to strengthen and inspire individuals with special needs—and those who care for them. “Without young people like Marien and Annie, who give their all for the CAMPers, we could not do what we do,” said Camp Director Ben Elble. “CAMP is proud and thrilled to give back to the volunteers and staff who spend countless hours giving of themselves. They truly are what makes the magic happen!” said Executive Director Susan Osborne.
CAMP is a place where people who face all kinds of challenges in the outside world can come and be themselves. Whether you are an individual with special needs or an individual who has a hard time being yourself and making friends, CAMP is the place where all of that goes away. [Here] We are all equal. and Counselors Grade This year, in addition to funds allocated in the CAMP budget for scholarships, the CAMP Alumni Association added to the scholarship fund with donations made during the 35th Alumni Reunion. “Alumni know how hard the staff and volunteers work,” said Assistant Camp Director and CAMP Alumni Alex Sego. “We’ve been there. Making a gift to the scholarship fund is a way for alumni to encourage the CAMP leaders of today and to give back to an organization that has made such a difference in our lives.” Marien is a Photography major at Texas State University and Annie is in the Plan II Honors Program at the University of Texas in Austin. Both young women plan to be involved in the special needs community for life, through career paths and relationships built at CAMP.

Fun, Food, & Festivities for FREE! Load up the family, invite your friends, and come spend the day in the beautiful Texas Hill Country! Children’s Association for Maximum Potential (CAMP) will host the 7th Annual CAMPfest on Saturday, March 21st, from 11am to 4pm at Camp CAMP located on 515 Skyline Drive in Center Point, TX. This FREE events includes food, activities, and entertainment that appeal to all ages as well as a resource fair and silent auction (featuring items donated by Hill Country restaurants, shops and venues).
Guests are invited to participate in typical CAMP activities including archery, crafts and a visit to the aquatics center splash pad (weather permitting). You can have your picture drawn by a caricature artist or take to the runway in the CAMP fashion show. The kids are sure to enjoy the bounce castle, face painting, and close encounters with the animals in CAMP’s nature center. Lunch is on us, so be sure to stop by the dining hall for CAMP cuisine at its finest. “CAMPfest is our annual open-house event, when we invite perspective families, current families and the San Antonio and Hill Country communities to
come learn more about CAMP and the wonderful opportunities available for individuals with special needs—and those who care for them,” said Nancy Gerson, Development Manager and coordinator of this event. “It is especially great for families considering sending children to CAMP for the first time because we will have three question and answer sessions led by senior camping staff.” Q&A sessions give parents the opportunity to ask questions so that when they send their child to CAMP this summer it is a much easier transition. Prospective volunteers are also welcome to come and experience the CAMP community. Families can visit with vendors at the resource fair being held concurrently with CAMPfest. “We will have local agencies, that provide support to families who have children and adults with special needs. Attendees can learn about programs available in the [Hill Country/San Antonio] area. We also invite parents to visit the Reavis Computer Lab and get assistance with an online 2015 Summer CAMP Application,” said Michelle Elble, Director of Family support Programs. If your CAMPer plans to make CAMP a part of their summer be sure to submit a completed three-part-application.
