This edition of our annual report highlights the unique relationships that exist at Camphill Village, and the ways in which these relationships—all of varying complexities—contribute to

Dear Friends, The relationships at Camphill Village are what define us. We can never say enough about the efforts of the coworkers and villagers to develop a welcoming environment where creativity and camaraderie flourish. And it’s within this Village that some of the most precious bonds—intergenerational relationships—are formed. Visitors who tour Camphill Village are often surprised to find that children are also raised in our homes, and they always have been. While living with a grandparent is a rarity in the United States, many of the villagers at Camphill have co-raised children that are now adults with fond memories of the extended families that contributed to their upbringing. Sheila Adelman and Anne Gordon, who are now in their elderly years, have helped to raise dozens of children over their combined 105 years living in Camphill Village. They are just two of many residents who have seen changes in house leaders and families who come and go, and many who have returned. Camphill Village is able to cultivate real-world experiences that not many adults with special needs have access to. From integration in the work place to living in a family environment, the fulfilling relationships that exist at Camphill have contributed to our being awarded accreditation by the Council on Quality Leadership (CQL) in 2016, an achievement that holds great meaning to us. It provides not just a logo to display on our publications, but a nationally respected mark that recognizes our inspiring work in fostering a positive and welcoming environment that’s full of choice and personal accomplishment, none of which would be possible without the special relationships that exist here. The accreditation will encourage us to continue and improve upon our important work. My own children were raised here in Camphill Village, and my daughter Rosa had an especially strong connection to Kerry Soloman, a talented baker and exceptional friend. Kerry joined our family in Tamarack House in 2000 when Rosa was about six years old. Kerry would often read stories to anyone who was interested, and Rosa loved having Kerry read to her. The two grew to be close friends, and Rosa felt an important person in her life was gone following Kerry’s untimely passing at the age of 40. Because my children were raised in Camphill Village, they have a remarkably effortless relationship with the villagers who live here; it is more natural than my own relationship with those living in the Village, despite my being here for almost 20 years. The children living at Camphill Village are sensitive. They are thoughtful and kind, and they can instinctively tell when a villager needs assistance. As their time living here grows, so does their ability to provide that assistance. This keenness and this sensitivity are the qualities we want our children to value. It is the reason so many of us choose to raise our families at Camphill Village. We are raising a generation of natural caregivers who enter the world with an appreciation and respect for people with disabilities, and who share our vision of a world that possesses the desire to look past disability and see the wonderful gifts each person on this Earth possesses. We hope you’ll share in this optimism, and carry it with us through 2017.

To the friends and donors of Camphill Village, I have some excellent news to share with you all as we review our 2015-2016 financial year. For starters, I’m delighted to announce that the Camphill Village USA Annual Fund once again reached its goal for the financial year. And to that, I’ll add even more good news: our contract has been approved. It is final, and it will bring state funding to the Village until March 31, 2021. As many of you know, this was an important achievement during a time when our ongoing contract negotiations with New York State brought some uncertainty to our community. The funding provided in this contract will cover just over 50 percent of our community’s operating costs for the next four years. This helps with so much of the unique programming and services that define the truly special place that is Camphill Village USA, including the farms that produce our fresh vegetables and meats; music and exercise programs; cultivation of essential skills, like cooking healthy meals; and the lasting friendships that are all around. If you have had the good fortune to visit the Village, you know that the list does not end here, but it can be difficult to even find the right words to describe this Village. Perhaps the word “magic” is the word that comes the closest. We’ve reached important milestones in other areas throughout the year, as well, including the start of what we hope will become an annual tradition: the Camphill Village 5K Trail and Fun Run. In November, old friends and new acquaintances ran in the Village to benefit our community, and those who couldn’t be here participated from as far away as the State of Nevada. It was a national movement that expanded support for our Village, and we expect it will grow in reach and in success. The Village has also seen some changes on its Board of Directors, including the addition of three talented Village house leaders—Roy Tau, Rose Aring, and Kristina Labaty—as well as Peter Kornman, a retired partner from the Manhattan law firm Davis Polk & Wardwell; and Charles Sims, who, along with his wife Nancy Wolf, has graciously hosted Camphill Village’s Anne Ratner Concert Series in his home for many years. Our new board members have been extremely helpful as we develop our strategic plan for the Village, aimed at improving and expanding crucial programs for the adults with developmental differences who call Camphill their home. Thanks to all of you supported us financially over the year. I hope you will continue to support our great organization; while the approval of our contract has provided relief, the future of our state funding is still uncertain, and the health of our annual fund is of great importance. We are accomplishing great things, and inspiring each other every day here in Copake. We look forward to updating you on another wonderful year in 2018. Sincerely

It’s often to those with whom we’ve shared an accomplishment or a struggle that we feel closest. In a move that has already brought two friends closer together, Vera Blanchfield and Marian Scharr are embarking on an exciting new phase in their lives here at Camphill Village: independent living.

While Camphill Village is our home, we spend a large amount of time outside of the Village making new friends, creating new memories, and supporting the local economy. In 2016, Camphill Village produced a short movie entitled, “Camphill Village: A Community within a Community.” The video, which is showcased on our web site, explores our relationships with local merchants like Louis Saperstein of Saperstein’s in Millerton; the employees and lifeguards of our state parks, where we like to swim and barbecue; and other area nonprofits, like Blue Rider Stables, where we’ve participated in a therapeutic riding program for many years. Like Mr. Saperstein says in the video, “We’re friends and neighbors… I’m happy they’re here, and I hope they’re happy I’m here.” The feeling is indeed mutual, Louis.

Many of our readers are familiar with Orchard House at Camphill. It’s one of the original structures of our grounds, and has been our accommodations house for overnight guests for several years. Over the summer, Vera and Marian moved in to Orchard, and have been running the home’s accommodations. The transition continues, and independence is the eventual goal. “I like it, but I wish it was more independent,” Vera said, while motioning to her friend. “We’re trying our best, right Marian?” At the moment, there is one coworker—Inga Seefeld—living in the home with Vera and Marian. There’s also additional guidance offered by Nadja Jiquet, a house leader next door. Marian agreed she and Vera have been working hard toward a common goal, and while she’s glad to be in Orchard, she feels a bit more isolated than she used to. Nadja echoed Marian’s concern, and said they’re trying to find a balance between independence and community living.
“What we are realizing is what connects us here is this interdependence,” she said. “We try to be considerate that it’s still a house within the Village; within a community.” The interdependence of the Village—working and living together for the purpose of improving the community—is in a way at odds with the prospect of independent living. Or at least it would be if Vera and Marian were only working inside Orchard. Instead, they’ll continue to work on the farm and in the woodshop like they’ve always done. Marian said she’s glad she moved and she enjoys living in Orchard and having opportunities for independence. While transition can be difficult, she says she and her friend will prevail. “I love Vera. Fellow community members of Camphill Village Copake, Volunteers have been living and helping in Copake since Copake began. These volunteers have a unique relationship with young people. For example, I live in a house with people from around the world: Holland, South Africa, and China. We all live in peace, but when situations like care, distractions, or just talking out bumps in the road of life, the relationship grows like a beautiful rose. I have lived in Lirio House for all of my Copake life with the same house family who knows, understands, supports, and cares for each other coming and going. Volunteer relationships make Copake the working, thriving, glowing, and successful place it is today. Personally, when I began as a young villager, the volunteer relationships were one-on-one relationships with volunteers showing the ropes of life for living here. Now that I live here, I am able to help whenever and wherever I am needed. In other words, I am a volunteer to all friends. We are volunteers in our own special ways if we only look inside and outside of us. Thank you. 8

Coworkers are volunteers who come from all over the world to find Camphill, and live and work alongside adults with special needs. They are the lifeblood of Camphill Village, and offer not just skills, but friendship and guidance. Some of these volunteers spend several years in Camphill communities, and with their wealth of experience, choose to run one of the 21 extended family households in the Village. The relationship between house leaders and villagers is one of balance, shared responsibility, and understanding. Many house leaders spend their afternoons away from the home, managing the farm, gardens, or craft studios. At Camphill Village, we receive hands-on instruction in our workplaces every day, from sewing a blank page into the binding of a journal in the bookbindery to threading the wire on a weed whacker while working on the estate. There are so many skills to be learned in the Village. Imparting their knowledge every day, our work masters continue to patiently guide and instruct villagers in honing their crafts. 9

Childhood in a Camphill Community – by Roswitha Imegwu
Then, in 1974 we came to Camphill Village here in Copake, and I became “house mother” (now called “house leader”) in Aspen house, which, at that time had eight adults with special needs and two other coworkers. My sons were 8 and 6 at the time and soon came to regard their older housemates as aunts and uncles. There were other households with toddlers or babies where one or the other villager would take on a nanny role and be seen proudly pushing his or her charge along the Village road in a stroller.
My father was a teacher in the “Geert Groote School” (a Waldorf school in Amsterdam, Holland) and heard about Camphill from his parents, who had moved to Camphill, Aberdeen (in Scotland) in about 1949. He visited them there in 1950 and returned to Amsterdam to convince my mother that Camphill was a place where “we can live our ideals!”
A few years ago, I asked my sons what had been their favorite experience or memory growing up in Camphill Village, and their answer surprised me. I had expected them to talk about the times we had done things as a nuclear family, such as going on vacation, or eating Thanksgiving dinner. But they both said that their favorite memories were of us all sitting together in the living room on a winter’s evening and reading stories like “A Christmas Carol” or “The Grey Gentlemen,” and also singing Christmas carols together! We had Will, a delightful man living with us, who became something of a favorite uncle to my boys because he knew how to throw a lasso around a fence post, which really impressed them! He was also a real gentleman, hence a good role model! And then there was Lee, who was much loved and regarded as a kind of grandfather figure by my sons. He did fine woodcarving and had a tremendous work ethic, which they greatly respected. “Auntie Susan” played an important role in their teen years and still calls to remind me whenever one of the boys has a birthday, and they have to visit her when they come to the Village!

One year later, on Good Friday in 1951, we arrived in Camphill and began “life sharing” with an extended family that included several big boys with diverse abilities and disabilities. I was eight years old and soon took to speaking English with my new family and friends. (I should mention that my Camphill experiences in Scotland and England were limited to Camphill Schools, focused primarily on the care and education of children with special needs.) The children of coworkers went to the St. John’s School together with the special needs children, and to us this seemed quite normal. The school was essentially a Waldorf School and the only difference was that each class teacher would have one or two class helpers to support the children with special needs and on occasions take them aside for special lessons. A couple of years later, when a group of us coworker children were ready to go into sixth grade, we were sent to boarding school in England and found at least two classmates with some learning difficulties. For us it was natural to help them because that is what we had done in Camphill. Thirteen and a half years later, just after Christmas 1967, I returned to Camphill Aberdeen with my 2-year-old son as a refugee from the Biafra War, where my husband had died. I was pregnant with my second child. My family and my Camphill family opened their arms to us and provided a safe and loving environment where my second child was born and where my older son could regain his confidence in a world that had been upended for him as well as for me. I was able to complete my studies at Edinburgh University while my children were cared for by their Granny (my mother) in a large Camphill household with children with developmental differences. 10

There is no doubt in my mind that the experience of growing up in community with a very diversely abled population has had a profound and beneficial impact on the way my sons are able to relate to and work with all kinds of people. My older son, Obi, is a very successful vascular surgeon in New Jersey and whenever anyone with disabilities walks into the practice, they always send them to Obi because he is so comfortable with them. My younger son did his training in Curative Education at Camphill, near Lausanne, Switzerland, and at this time works in a sister community in New Hampshire. He is especially gifted at working one-on-one with people who are more challenging to manage. Both of them speak with great fondness of their friends in the Village and when they visit, the love is mutual and very visible. 11

The role donors play in our community is at the cornerstone of Camphill Village; all of the relationships we’ve addressed to this point are made possible through the generosity of our donors. While many generous contributors aren’t personally acquainted with Vera Blanchfield and Marian Scharr, the lives of these women and every villager who calls Camphill their home are absolutely improved because of the support Camphill receives throughout the year.
