On 615 acres of wooded hills, gardens, and pastures in rural upstate New York, adults with special needs and long- and short-term service volunteers live and work together as equals in extended family homes throughout Camphill Village. The founding of Camphill Village in 1961 was part of a transformative movement in the United States to reform how society treats people with special needs. We are a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to our mission of being an integrated community where people with developmental differences are living a life of dignity, equality, and purpose. 2

Dear friends and readers, In 2021 Camphill Village will celebrate its 60th birthday. For six decades, this organization utilized the strengths of social therapy to transform the way society treats people with developmental differences. Today our mission remains the same; however, our environment has changed significantly. It is these changes we address in creating a Strategic Plan for long-term sustainability. It has been my pleasure over many months serving on the Strategic Planning Committee that considered the collective desires of the Village, its residents, and staff in an effort to to enhance the quality of life in the Village and in turn serve as an example for other similar organizations. Camphill Village comes from humble beginnings with donated land and few residents. This Village is now home to 97 individuals with developmental disabilities. We have more than 20 homes, as well as buildings to house creative spaces, and biodynamic farms and gardens throughout. All of the elements that are a part of our lifesharing model are crucial to the wellbeing of the residents of Camphill Village.
The enclosed outline for our strategic plan details the goals we plan to meet in the next three years that will help us respond to oncoming regulatory and social trends. The plan includes entrepreneurship projects that will help our costs, as well as participation in statewide advocacy and fundraising ideas that reach beyond the locality of the Village. We look forward to achieving our goals and invite each and every one of you to participate. Sincerely,

Dear friends, In our last annual report, we shared with you some of the uncertainties this organization was grappling with under new federal guidance at the time. The language published in the sub-regulatory guidance of the Final Rule had characterized farmstead communities as being isolating, and led to our contract negotiations with the New York State Office for People with Developmental Differences (OPWDD) being stalled. In response, we launched a rather large advocacy initiative that included your letters and testimonials. While I am pleased to report the language declaring farmstead communities has been retracted as of April, we are facing new challenges. Despite the change of heart conveyed in the federal guidance, it is very unlikely that the OPWDD will be awarding Camphill Village with a contract that is similar to the one we’ve received and renewed in the past. In fact, we are almost certain. Our current contract expires in 2021, and the Village has been exploring alternative funding streams to partially supplement any gaps in funding. After all, our state contract contributes just under half of our annual operating budget;
the rest is from generous donors like yourselves. As Gabriella mentioned in her letter, we are looking forward to exploring some mission-aligned ventures that may assist us in meeting our funding goals. These ventures are folded into the strategic plan that the Village developed to not only protect ourselves in the coming months, but to flourish in the coming years. We are glad to be in great company as we ride this tide of policy changes that stand to substantially impact our funding. We have been thriving for nearly 60 years, during which time we have seen a wealth of changes, leadership, and funding mechanisms. Our excellent programming will absolutely remain, and we are hopeful that we can expect more good news from our policymakers in Albany and Washington over the next year. Sincerely,

For almost 60 years, Camphill Village has been transforming the way people of all abilities engage with one another. Side by side, and with a sincere interest in the wellbeing of our fellow community members, we have been setting our sights on new goals and achieving great things here in Copake. We have benefited from the generosity of our donors in countless ways. We have told you in person and in print the stories of members of our community who experienced isolation before finding a new home at Camphill Village. Many of you are familiar with so many of our senior community members, who have shaped and carried on the traditions of this community so that those who are joining us feel welcome and ready to contribute. And many of you have visited in recent years, and found that the Village has welcomed several young and energetic friends who are infusing the Village with a lively social scene. And a constant: the young residential volunteers who come into our lives for a year or so to test their own abilities and impress us in so many ways. We hope you’ll consider the tremendous impact your gifts have had on this community as you thumb through the pages of this report — from young Taylor Jones and Johannes Hoffman playing guitar by the Hall Pond, to Danny Morse surrounded by friends as he blows out the candles on his 75th birthday, and all of the wonderful moments that happened in between.
