LIZ RIGNEY

It has long been the dream of the Camp For All Board and the Staff to come up with a way to bring the magic of Camp For All to the patients who can’t make it to our physical location. This year, the stars aligned, and with the help of generous donors, amazing volunteers and the incredibly tireless Camp For All staff that dream came true. Last summer, we provided “camp” inside MD Anderson Children’s Hospital. We named it Camp For All 2U. For four magical days, campers took part in the very same activities they would experience at Camp, but within the hospital. Cabins were formed, there were energizers, and the flag was raised each morning. At the end of each day, s’mores were the treat, and the very physicians and nurses who care for our campers on a daily basis volunteered to have pies thrown in their faces. We even had a surprise visit by Houston Texan Xavier Su’a-Filo and his wife, Heather! As a volunteer, I witnessed a little boy who on the first day arrived in a sweatshirt with a hood to hide his head, bald from treatment. By the end of camp, he arrived with no hood or hat and proudly posed for a picture with his doctor before throwing a pie in his face! Teenagers who initially, thought they might be a little too old to take part, returned daily, and on Friday, expressed the hope of becoming counselors someday. The magic of Camp For All 2U was contagious. Because of YOUR support, Camp For All 2U is expanding in 2015! Join us as a volunteer! It will brighten your life as you see even more campers with special needs discover life.

p m F a o r All 2 C w BORN o s a U H w Pat Sorrells, President and CEO of Camp For All, will tell you that Camp For All 2U was meant to be. She and Camp Director, Kurt Podeszwa, were on a routine visit to meet with Camp Star Trails (a camp that comes to Camp For All from MD Anderson Children’s Hospital), when they were asked “Have

you ever thought of bringing Camp to Houston?”

Bringing Camp For All to Houston had been a long time plan for Camp For All. However, it wasn’t until this fateful meeting at MD Anderson that the wheels of Camp For All 2U started to roll. Within weeks, Camp For All 2U had co-chairs Terri Hudler-Hull and Sara Lewis, an underwriter, TS Distributors, and the Camp For All Staff working full steam ahead. There were only a few short months to recruit volunteers and reconfigure classic camp activities to fit inside MD Anderson. By July 15th Camp For All 2U was ready for campers. All of the hard work and innovative thinking had paid off. Over 60 campers attended Camp For All 2U for five days, many of them unable to leave the hospital due to their need for ongoing treatment. These patients and their siblings attended summer camp without ever leaving the hospital. They left the realities of childhood cancer behind for a morning of fun, or an afternoon of laughter.

CAMPERS WERE ABLE TO DISCOVER LIFE AT CAMP FOR ALL 2U.

Staff HIGHLIGHTS

ALLEN and LINDSAY Behind every camp at Camp For All there is a great team of professional staff thinking of creative and fun ways for campers to discover life. Camp For All 2U was no different! Program Supervisors, Allen McBride and Lindsay Gallmore worked quickly and tirelessly to bring Camp to MD Anderson. Allen remembers, “Every activity had its own adaptation that needed to be made, and its own challenge. MD Anderson was so accommodating that we could really make anything happen, but it required a lot of ingenuity!” Allen and Lindsay brought Camp to life with creative takes on Camp favorites. Lindsay’s favorite adaptation was, “Canoeing! The kids loved it. They were pushed and pulled around by our awesome volunteers, and had a blast playing the games. Not many kids can say they have canoed indoors so it was neat for the campers to get that experience.”

CORPORATE COLLABORATION

THE STARS ALIGNED:

Camp For All 2U would not have been possible without the funding from TS Distributors. Upon hearing about the plan to bring Camp to MD Anderson, TS Distributors stepped forward and offered to underwrite the cost of what it would take to make Camp For All 2U a reality. We sat down with President Brad Stein, to talk about his experience. How did you learn about Camp For All? Brad // Camp For All is part of our family so it is appropriate that it be part of our family business (TS Distributors) too. What made you choose Camp For All 2U, out of the many choices, as a program to support? Brad // We liked the idea that the camp was trying something new. The camp does so much for those that attend in Burton, why not give that opportunity to those that can’t?

Volunteer HIGHLIGHT Leslie Avioli

Having been involved with Camp For All since her son’s 2005 Eagle Scout trip to Camp, Leslie Avioli is no stranger! Always eager to help out, Leslie jumped at the chance to volunteer with Camp For All 2U. Leslie admits that she was “a little nervous about how to interact with kids that were sick with cancer”. Not knowing exactly what to expect, Leslie soon realized that “these kids are just kids wanting to have fun. The energy they bring was so cool to see. I felt I had helped to put a smile on their faces!” Leslie is eager to volunteer with Camp For All 2U in the future and excited to be a part of something so important to the Houston community.

Leslie Avioli

Camp For All 2U Outcomes

What sort of feedback have you received from employees who volunteered with Camp For All 2U? Brad // The staff was very excited before the event and even more excited about it afterward. To have the opportunity make someone else’s day a little brighter is incredibly uplifting. Everyone enthusiastically agreed it should be something we do again next year.

Quinn Franklin, Manager, Child, Adolescent and Young Adult Life Division of Pediatrics, MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital

Lauren Shinn, Child Life Specialist for Camps and Special Events, MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital

I can honestly say that I have never seen a philanthropic organization execute its mission as well as Camp For All. I am proud and will continue to support good people doing good things at Camp For All.

“Camp For All 2U was a gateway to getting our patients back into life!” “Camp For All 2U brought laughter to patients and staff. Everyone in the hospital knew when the kids would be throwing pies in the faces of their nurses and doctors and tried to be there!” “One camper in particular is now participating in ALL of the activities with his peer group! That wasn’t happening before Camp For All 2U.” “Another patient who is deathly afraid of water talks enthusiastically to everyone about canoeing at Camp For All 2U!”

Allen and Lindsay’s creative minds brought the Camp For All mission to Houston in a big way!

“To the VOLUNTEERS that made Camp For All 2U possible; WOW! You were incredible and completely exceeded our expectations.” – Allen

“Camp For All 2U was for all kids, both patients and their siblings. They all have one thing in common; cancer. To give them the camp experience is so important, because everyone has fun at Camp!”

pers 2U cam sive ll A r o F offen “Camp e visitor, s ri rp u s d xans, welcome the Houston Te e, r wif fo lineman Filo. He and his the u’a Xavier S ked around with ed , jo ow Heather nd Xavier sh hen a w s r e p i p h m ns ca ortsma ave a pie p s d o o g ed to h ace!” he agre at his f n w o r h t

“The opportunity for these kids to have choice and control in an environment where choice and control aren’t typically available is great. Camp For All 2U is an opportunity to flex life skills like independence, making decisions and problem solving and gives them back some of that control”
