Letter From Our Directors Dear Friends, The lead up to every summer has a certain momentum, a rhythm where no single moment is quite like the next. As opening day draws near, the energy and excitement accelerates and grows with each passing day.

We’ve both spent quality time with our own families since the start of the New Year and have been reminded of the beauty and blessing of Belonging: the irreplaceable feeling of being seen, accepted, loved, and appreciated—a feeling we strive to instill in every camper.

Over the past months we have welcomed college groups, Dudley and Kiniya leadership teams, and our very own Board of Trustees back on campus. Modeled on our camp sessions, each group comes together from diverse backgrounds and experiences to connect, engage, collaborate, and contribute, with our yearround team leading the way in fostering this culture.

Together, we deliver the highest quality experience, weaving our camp values of character, community, leadership and stewardship with our shared dedication to the mission into the fabric of every program, providing a place for all to Belong.

Late last fall, our friends at Bouquet Valley Central School marked the end of their season with a wonderful celebration on the Dudley campus in Westport. Their schoolwide homecoming weekend included games for all student soccer teams, with the varsity teams playing under the lights. This event, which included food and vendors and the biggest bonfire ever, allowed the kids and community members to come together and showcase their home field—a place of Belonging for them during their school years.

So, as we charge towards summer ‘23, we remain deeply committed to this goal of creating a sense of Belonging for all participants in all programs—where each person feels welcomed, known, included, supported, and connected, enabling them to approach challenges and opportunities with wholehearted curiosity and courage.

I was very pleased to see the photo of a number of us at the Dartmouth graduation in May that was in the latest issue of The Other Fellow First. But, I noticed that you transposed the first two digits of my number (from 7951 to 9751). That effectively took a year or more off of my age. I am now, by Dudley math, at least a year or more younger! Wowzer!

#16100 Vicki (Allen) Nephew sent us a wonderful letter about some exciting news from a local school district that features a number of students from the Dudley K-Crew.

Dear #7951 Jack, Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Camp numbers are such an important part of how we know each other in the community that we really hate to make such a mistake. While the lower number always gets the “bragging rights,” you have captured one of the few benefits that goes with mistakes like that. Our apologies.

From #24490 Sarah Godophin You forgot Bernard Godolphin, camper #22739, in the athletes’ section of The Other Fellow First for Fall 2022. He's a senior at the University of Toronto and on the swimming team. He was last year's National University champion in the 100 free and 3rd place in the 400 free. I'll update Camp once 2023 Nationals are held. Bern has a great chance at remaining National Champ!

Dear Brendan, Have you ever wondered what your K-Crew does in the winter? Six members of the Dudley K-Crew were part of the Moriah Varsity Competitive Cheerleading Team. They used their teamwork and dedication to contribute to one of their most successful seasons ever. The team earned two first place finishes and one second place finish during the regular season at competitions in the Albany area. They went on to win the CVAC league championship and then New York State Section VII championship in the Division 2 Small Team division. The student-athletes then represented Section VII at the NYSPHSAA State Competitive Cheerleading Championships in Binghamton, NY. They tied for 12th in the Division 2 Small Team division, the highest finish from our section under the current system. It was a pleasure to have coached these talented students. Can't wait for summer 2023!

WELCOME! Board of Trustees, Class of 2023 #26624 Nicole “Nicky” Hylton-Patterson, Bronx, NY

A

native of Jamaica, Nicole “Nicky” Hylton-Patterson spent much of her formative years camping and exploring the countryside as part of a summer regimen imposed by her parents. First as a troupe member, and then a leader of the Girl Guides of Jamaica, she was able to flourish, discovering agency, self-determination, feminist empowerment, and sisterhood. Her yearly sojourns to the Blue Mountains of Portland, Jamaica have had an immense impact on her personal and professional life and continue to inform her interactions with others, nature, and the known world. These formative moments helped to develop Nicky’s journey as a leader in the Equity and Justice movement, where she sees her role at Dudley and Kiniya as part of a larger objective of helping the organization advance its equity, inclusion, and belonging goals.

Today, she continues to draw inspiration from the wisdom of her ancestors, who helped guide her quest to attain multiple degrees and certificates in ethnic, gender and sexuality studies at numerous institutions. Her education is only eclipsed by an extensive career in the U.S. foreign service and as a racial justice officer for the YWCA, Elmira, a human rights coordinator for the Chemung County Legislator, an academic who has taught courses in critical race and Black feminist theories, queer of color critique, Pan African studies and Africana philosophy, and the Inaugural Director of the Adirondack Diversity Initiative.

As the inaugural director of the Adirondack Diversity Initiative (ADI), a first-of-its-kind in the region, HyltonPatterson facilitated DEIB programs and taught leadership in education, recreation, business, environmental justice and public policy across the Adirondack Park. In partnership with groups across the Park, she created ADI’s Emerging Stewards Program that brings together diverse young people from within and without the Adirondack Park.

In her current role as the Manager for the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging program at Little Flower Children & Family Services of New York, she continues to mobilize and deploy the entirety of her personal, political, and professional experiences. Her mission: To equip communities with the tools, strategies, language, and VOICE needed to dismantle systemic racism and structural oppression.

#19231 Kari McKinley, South Burlington, VT

K

ari, daughter of #10231 Schelling and Annie McKinley, was born and raised in Westport, NY. As her brothers #16231 Arne and #18231 Leif headed down the road to Dudley each summer, she yearned for a “sister” experience. While that never came to fruition for her as a camper, she happily joined the Dudley Hike Hut staff in 2004. Her three years in the Hike Hut were an incredible experience; it was without hesitation that she accepted a role as Senior D-head at Kiniya in 2007. She spent the following four years in a number of roles—from D-Head to Tripping Director, to Leadership Development and mentorship with the Aides, JLs, and ALs. Earning her Kiwi disc in 2010, Kari reflected on the evolution of Camp Dudley and Kiniya and what an honor it was to be a part of that process. After leaving summer to attend graduate school, she returned as a member of the Kiniya health care team. Most recently, Kari was thrilled to serve as the first female Co-Chair of the Dudley Kiniya Alumni Association (DKAA).

Kari studied Biology at McGill University. Upon graduating, she moved to Burlington, VT, for several years (clearly unable to pull herself away from Lake Champlain).

From there, she attended graduate school at the Yale University School of Nursing. She now works as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at Timber Lane Pediatrics in Burlington.

Kari loves the relationships she is able to form with the children and families she serves.

She and her husband, #18952 Joel Cross, enjoy adventuring throughout Vermont and Upstate New York with their young children, Aksel and Freya. They all cherish visits to Kiniya and Dudley and are lucky to be surrounded by many Dudley and Kiniya pals in the Burlington area.

Kari is grateful for the amazing opportunities Dudley and Kiniya have afforded her and is eager to give back to the Camp community so integral to her life by serving on the Board.

#15389 Tom Pohlad, Wayzata, MN

T

om started at Camp Dudley as a Cub in 1991 and spent the next three summers there as a Plebe, Junior, and Senior. Camp left an indelible imprint on Tom, and today his boys #26089 Jack (12) and #26389 Luke (10) attend Camp, as will Alex (8) in the years ahead.

Outside of Camp, Tom works alongside second and third generation family members to manage a family business that operates in multiple industries, including commercial real estate, automotive, investments, and sports and entertainment.

Tom is a board member of Pohlad Companies and oversees family-owned businesses Carousel Motor Group, PAR Systems, and Northmarq Capital.

In addition to his work with Camp Dudley, Tom serves as an alum and parent on the Board of Trustees for Breck School, a PreK-12 College Preparatory School. Tom is a graduate of Boston College. He and his wife, Lindsay, live in Wayzata, MN, with their three boys.

#26707 Robin Wells, Raleigh, NC

R

obin first visited Camp Dudley in 2004. #14107 Jay had shared his affectionate memories of Camp with her, and that year, Robin got to experience the magic of driving down Dudley Road up to the gates of Camp. Robin and Jay went on to have three children: #24207 Jack, #25207 Tucker, and Caroline. Additionally, they have nieces and nephews who have found home-away-from-home at Dudley and Kiniya: #25591 George Kenny, #22507 David White, and #24609 Katie White.

Robin's family has called Raleigh, NC, home for the last 11 years. Traveling to the North Country, she has enjoyed many camp drop-offs, pick-ups, and reunions. Robin didn’t grow up going to camp but swears she would be first in line for a Kiniya bunk if it were an option.

Professionally, Robin works remotely for NYC based Trusty.care, a sales software startup whose mission is to connect individuals with affordable health insurance options.

Robin serves as VP of Operations & Implementation, focused on HR, Compliance and Project Management.

There are several causes that touch Robin’s heart.

She enjoys giving of her time to The Green Chair Project in Raleigh, which provides families with furniture and home items as they transition out of homelessness, crisis, or disaster, and to St. David’s School in Raleigh. She has also served as a member of the Board of Visitors for her alma mater in St. Louis, Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School (MICDS).

Robin is thrilled to join the Camp Dudley Board of Trustees. She hopes to share her perspectives as a mom and wife of a dedicated crew of Dudley and Kiniya devotees.

Robin wants to contribute to the sustainability and longevity of this very special and beloved place where we put “The other fellow first.” Yoha!

Dudley JL Weekend The following was written by #24664 Chris Corcoran, #24777 Hudson White, and #26153 Liam Karamanoglou with their JL Weekend Coach, #22551 Peter McClearn.

J

L weekend of 2023, the first such weekend since 2019, is in the books and was a complete success. This group of enthusiastic young men came together to bond and prepare for the summer ahead on Lake Champlain. During structured discussions about their new leadership role and the general challenges of Camp, the boys brought their unique perspectives to conversations about the upcoming summer.

The group joined #22128 Geo Price and #10555 Lang Fu to tackle challenge course activities and learned some invaluable lessons in the process. The boys cited these teamwork activities as highlights of the weekend, finding real value in the tactics of leadership that both Geo and Fu provided. During their exploration of the Stacy campsites, the JLs took some additional time to themselves for solo reflection.

One rising JL remarked about seeing the Stacy wilderness during the winter, "The magic was still there," which is a sentiment that extended to the weekend as a whole. Capping off Saturday night, the group watched a film about masculinity, followed by an introspective and open discussion about the role that masculinity plays at Camp. An abbreviated Sunday morning chapel wrapped up an incredible weekend of bonding and fun.

This group of young men, many of whom were relative strangers before this gathering, came together in an impressive display of commitment and energy towards Camp. The 2023 Camp Dudley Junior Leaders absolutely capitalized on this weekend and are itching to be back on campus again soon.

As opening day approaches for Dudley's 139th summer, the JLs are prepared and enthusiastic to create the best summer possible.

Kiniya AL/JL Weekend By #25223 Liz Moore

F

rom March 17-19th, 23 ALs and JLs and five Kiniya staff gathered to connect, play, and consider our roles and responsibilities as we look to lead a community focused on joy, inclusivity and growth.

We may have seen snow instead of grass, sat by a fire instead of a waterfront, and been on Dudley’s property instead of at Kiniya, but as JL #23725 Clara Freeth wrote, “Even though we weren’t on our campus, the feeling of being at home is so prevalent within our community. I love Camp because everyone wants to be here spending time with each other.”

The crew that gathered included folks that participated in an off-campus program last summer (NOLS, Spain or Germany), some who had been on Kiniya’s campus, one who has not walked Kiniya shores since 2019, and three brave folks who are brand new to our Camp. As AL #26841 Khysia Jeter from Baltimore, MD described her introduction to our community, “Gosh, there were so many new experiences! Snowshoeing, seeing the stars, new songs! So much LIGHT in one room and positive, beautiful humans. I am so grateful for this opportunity! I loved each and every conversation.”

Here are some additional reflections from our time together JL #25341 Sophie Fiegl wrote, “(The new learning I want to incorporate)...is recognizing the portrayal of emotions in our thoughts, words and body language. I liked discussing how we can help manage camper emotions as well as our own. I hope…to help campers feel safe, loved and respected.”

We enjoyed the short time we had together by balancing both learning and fun. We played and connected around the fire, snowshoed to a waterfall for some silent solo time and an impromptu snowball fight, ate amazing food, and filled MacLean’s rooms with singing and dancing.

We also spent time discussing what it means to transition into a leadership mindset. We evaluated the structure and importance of our evening reflections through Vespers, learned how to understand emotion, and discussed the best actions to take to support our campers and ourselves.

JL #24513 Sophie Brown said, “I want to incorporate inclusivity into my leadership and create a community not only in our cabins but also in all of Camp. Something we learned I thought was interesting was talking about how everyone has their own ‘brand of leadership’ and how that makes us stronger.”

JL #25956 Claire Parelli said she’d like to practice more “leading with curiosity. I want to incorporate this because it's a sure way to keep yourself in check when taking care of others. This way you can’t assume what's going on because you really don’t know.”

AL # 23232 Clara (Cubbles) Guettel shared, “I learned more about how to deal with homesick or frustrated campers in a calm and supportive way and got the chance to imagine what Camp will be like this summer!”

AL #24171 Angelica Nwachuku wrote, “I hope to put an emphasis on collaboration and inclusivity. A functioning cabin is a group effort and that’s something I was able to remember this weekend.”

A Walk Off Main Campus By #25330 Jamie Johnson

A

s anyone who has spent time at Camp Dudley knows, we are incredibly lucky to call our magical main campus in Westport, NY, "home." The mile and a half of shoreline on Lake Champlain, with its cabins, athletic fields, Witherbee and Beckman Halls, and more has played host to countless memories and experiences for over a century. And while main campus is the center of all of the day-to-day action at Camp over the years, we have been fortunate enough to add to our property to further enhance our programming. We acquired the Stacy Brook Wilderness, which for decades has provided an outdoors experience with camping and hiking just down the road, and now, with the addition of Frisbie Farm, we are looking forward to the opportunities that these will provide in the decades to come.

Stacy Brook: A Lesson on Improv

I

n Improv, everything is an offer and a gift, and you get to choose how to respond to it. “Yes, and…!” lets you accept the circumstances and build upon them. As August came to a close last year, Westport experienced an incredible wind storm. Main campus was unscathed, but a section of our Stacy Brook wilderness was quite simply devastated.

A 50-yard wide swath of trees felt the wrath of Mother Nature, and what didn’t get uprooted just snapped in half. Literally hundreds of trees lay on the ground. Trees that have witnessed generations of Cubs take their first brave steps into the wilderness and Seniors navigate the darkness of their Senior Night Experience were laid low.

The roadway was impassible, but our lean-tos and yurts remained intact and undamaged.

After a collective deep breath and moment of pause, the Dudley team looked at what the winds had offered and said, “Yes, and…!” What might have been seen as tragedy became an opportunity. Much of the timber laying on the ground could be harvested by our low impact logger and sent to local mills to make usable lumber. At least a year’s worth of campfire wood was waiting for us!

We quickly discovered that the path of broken timber could be put to use as the head of a new trail that would transform our upand-back trail into a loop. Future campers will be able to explore a babbling brook, rock outcrops, and vistas of the Champlain Valley that their fathers and grandfathers likely never knew existed in our little corner of the Adirondacks. The scars of the wind storm will endure for years to come; the benefits will last for decades.

Dudley Dreams & Frisbie Farm

o you dream of Dudley? When you do, is it a dip in Lake Champlain? The serenity of Chapel? Performing in a show? The camaraderie of friends? For those of us lucky enough to be a part of the year-round team, our dreams may be a little different. We often dream of setting the stage for those fleeting few weeks of summer when everyone gets to enjoy this little slice of paradise.

That little slice has grown recently with the acquisition of the historic Frisbie Farm. The possibilities are incredible. The property itself already hosts a cross-country running trail that serves local high school teams, and we recently met with representatives from CATS (Champlain Area Trails) to explore the creation of a seasonal hiking trail. During the winter, the property has already become a favorite spot for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing for those in the area.

During this off-season, we have been hard at work increasing staff housing by adding two bedrooms and a bathroom to the ground floor of the farmhouse.

This will give us a total of five bedrooms for our summer staff. One of the barns is being refurbished into a multi-use space using reclaimed lumber from old horse

stalls as flooring. The building will be off the grid with solar-powered lights, a small fire pit, and an incredible view to the west. Several other barns will be put to use in ways still undetermined. A welcome center? A maintenance shop? A composting site? The possibilities are nearly endless. So many sweet dreams!

Frisbie Family Properties Background

C

amp has enjoyed a long relationship with the Frisbie family and its farms. Many of our directors maintained a close relationship with several members of the Frisbie family. Even before Camp Dudley acquired its permanent site, the early campers and leaders made use of the Frisbie properties that now comprise the upper fields. A rustic volleyball court was fashioned, as was a primitive track and field venue. After 23 years of temporary sites on the western shores of Lake Champlain, Dudley finally secured a permanent home in Westport in 1908. A handful of Dudleyites, including former director Billy Burger, Robert Wensley of the state Boys' Committee, Walter Witherbee (who owned an ore mining firm in Port Henry), and Samuel P. Avery, brokered a deal with local landowners Mrs. Roe and Mr. Frisbie to secure the land on which the campus sits today.

In 1955 a four-acre parcel of land from Robert and Dorothy Frisbie was acquired and eventually became Staff Hill. Then in 1985, Camp purchased another parcel of Frisbie land from Earl and Katherine Frisbie that has since become the Golf Range and Senior soccer field.

Planning for Kiniya’s 105th Reunion Weekend is well underway, and we cannot wait to get our alums and families back on Kiniya’s campus for the weekend of August 18-20, 2023.

Lodging will be available on Kiniya’s campus in camper cabins Friday & Saturday night.

Cabins are dormitory style with single / bunk beds. All meals and activities included, and we’ll top it off with our 105th Celebration Dinner at Coleman Hall on Saturday evening!

Filling Kiniya's Long-Term Staff Housing Needs

H

ighly committed, talented, and passionate staff members are vital to our ongoing capacity to run a thriving camp. To recruit and retain exceptional individuals, we must provide adequate housing.

Since 2006, we have invested in upgrades to Kiniya’s facilities, rightfully prioritizing infrastructure first, camper cabins second, and major buildings third. Finally, we turned our focus to staff housing, and this spring after months of planning, construction began on the first cabin of Kiniya’s new Staff Village!

Located on Kiniya’s upper level, the new staff cabins will make it possible for Kiniya to attract and retain a senior team of professionals who will continue to add leadership, depth, continuity, and a more mature perspective to our programs and operations. Additionally, the acquisition of a house on Camp Kiniya Road last fall has moved us a step closer to meeting our long-term housing needs.

This exciting project is being funded with the support of faithful friends who know the value of attracting and retaining high-caliber staff.

Fulfilling Kiniya’s long-term housing goals and completing the Staff Village is an important strategic step for the next generation of campers.

The College Essay Ritual Each year, many of our rising high school seniors are confronted with the challenge of writing their best essays for the Common College App. It is no surprise that Dudley and Kiniya experiences often render vivid illustrations to this challenging process. In this edition, we are pleased to be able to share one such essay that was written by #24207 Jack Wells. As of press time, Jack is still undecided about where he will land in the fall, but he has exciting choices.

I

have no talent or interest in football, which makes it strange that it’s the source of some of my fondest memories. This is because the only place I’ve ever played or watched football is my summer camp in upstate New York. When I first went to camp, I was very shy. I would spend my time avoiding other people and reading books by myself, a thing that I still do pretty often today.

But there was something about this summer camp that prompted me to go back the next year, and then the year after that, and then every year since.

Never before had I come across a place where I was so consistently respected and included by other people, even ones I didn’t personally know. Of course, there were outliers, but the people I met there all strove to include everyone in whatever they were doing, from playing cards to archery to even football, and despite me being the worst at all these things, the inclusive atmosphere let me sincerely enjoy them in a way I’ve struggled to replicate at home.

Camp was where I took part in my first stage play, Shakespeare’s The Tempest, at age 11, and I enjoyed it so much that I’ve been in a play there every year since, and even one back home at school this year, written by one of my friends. Beyond that, I found that the emphasis on respecting each other allowed for a much more comfortable environment. It was gratifying to live up to the expectations of my new friends and my counselors. It dawned on me that I was enjoying the company of other people, which was a strange sensation for a self-proclaimed introvert. Despite the things we were doing not being inherently enjoyable to me, I was enjoying them, not despite the people around me who were so different from myself, but because of them.

The atmosphere I had found was novel to me, and it came to me that it was not this way because of any inherent property of summer camp, but rather because of the consistent effort each of my friends and

counselors put into every interaction towards simply being good to each other. The least I could do was attempt to reciprocate. The kindness I had experienced was only due to the effort of the people I had met. By attempting that same kindness, not only could I help maintain a community I had so enjoyed, but I might even help someone as reclusive as I was enjoy the community as much as I did.

One of my campers this past year reminded me so much of myself at his age–reclusive, nervous, and maybe a little scared of his counselor. I’m very proud to say that over that month I helped him come out of his shell, make some friends, and try some things he never would have before. The motto of Camp Dudley is “The other fellow first,” which I think sums up the spirit of the place. I have tried to live by that motto both while I’m there and while I’m at home, and I will be the first to admit that I very often fall short of it. But because of that, I attempt to foster that sense of community in others. I try always to be kind to the people around me and to place their needs above my own, be it by helping a peer with schoolwork when I have my own to do or hanging back to encourage a team member on the cross-country team. Even though I often falter in this, I still try every day. I try to make the community around me better, because a kinder, more inclusive community is the type of community that I want to be a part of.

The Yum Yum Tree By #18801 Drew Rider

W

e all anticipate certain landmarks as we get closer and closer to campus on our return journey to Dudley— catching sight of the “Welcome to the Adirondack Park” sign on Interstate 87, driving through Westport and glimpsing the lake, seeing the “Camp Dudley” sign turning onto the Dudley Road, passing the schoolhouse and taking in the rolling fields and mountains off in the distance. Another memorable Dudley experience is closing in. One of the last markers, cresting over that final hill, is the Yum Yum tree standing sentinel in the middle of the upper fields.

For decades, the Yum Yum tree’s presence has been an iconic fixture on Dudley’s campus. Every summer, it serves as a gathering place for teams and divisions, a centerpiece of extravaganzas, and a welcome shade umbrella during a competitive football or soccer game on a steamy July day.

Many have told its origin story— why it was planted there and how it got its unique name; I’m sure the real truth is out there somewhere, but it’s more fun not really knowing and allowing the magic of Dudley mythology to do its thing.

During the year, for those of us lucky enough to get to experience all four seasons at Camp, the Yum Yum’s strong, stalwart presence provides its own comfort as it changes color, sheds its leaves, becomes blanketed in snow, and marks the passage of time, with summer slipping into a collection of vivid memories. It is always there, and always familiar, even as everything else looks and feels so different. And then, the snow melts, the ground thaws, and little green buds begin to appear on its many branches, a sign that another summer is just around the corner.

The Camp Dudley campus is home to many landmarks; everyone has their favorite hang-out spots and views, and I’m sure for many, one of those is this magnificent tree, looming large and solitary in the middle of the rolling, green upper fields, ready to welcome more memories, rooted beneath its branches.

Our Dudley and Kiniya Stories Introducing the Storyteller Project By #18801 Drew Rider

A

lumni of Camp Dudley and Camp Kiniya love to tell stories. Whether it is Leaders and staff chatting around a campfire in the summer, an eager camper returning home from their first time on the shores of Lake Champlain and enthusiastically recounting every detail to their parents, or old friends reminiscing over dinner in a city far away from Westport or Colchester, when you get people with camp numbers talking about Camp, they can go on for hours sharing memories.

These can be stories from that day, just a few months before, or from decades long ago; regardless of when they took place, they are always a joy to hear.

This is the foundation of the Storyteller Project. We want to preserve these stories, share them with the community, and figure out a way to enjoy them for decades to come. To kick things off, we sat down with two legendary figures, #7289 Ace Scharges and #21532 Pete Nash, both long-standing members of the Dudley and Kiniya communities, respectively.

Ace Scharges has been a part of the Dudley family since he first came to Camp as a Cub in 1946. Over the decades, Ace has had many roles, from camper to Leader to D-Head, and then on to President of the CDA (now DKAA), Chairman of the Centennial Reunion, and a member of our Board of Managers. While on the Board, Ace was integral to the creation of the Camp Dudley archives, where he still works to this day. Our conversation ranged from what Camp was like when Ace was a kid to his favorite activities and traditions (many still carried on today), to the near miraculous feat of pulling off a successful Centennial Reunion. We then moved on to some of the interesting discoveries that have come from his decades of work on creating and maintaining the Camp archives.

Pete Nash has been a staple at Camp Kiniya since he first arrived as a staff member in 1958. For nearly seven decades, Pete has served in many positions, including working with the maintenance team, running the Kiniya store, overseeing the grounds as a year-round caretaker, and perhaps most importantly, befriending all and fully dedicating his life in service to others. Pete is always armed with a joke or a fond memory to share and is a reliable helper who will consistently brighten

your day and make you smile. During our conversation, he shared stories about what Kiniya was like “back in the day,” his relationship with both the Williams family and Marnie, and the joy he has felt watching Kiniya change and grow over the years.

It was a true delight taking the time to sit down and listen to all the stories Ace and Pete had to tell: this is just the beginning. This marks the latest achievement in Ben's career as one of the most highly respected administrators in New York State, where he has made significant contributions as an administrator and a high school coach in Section IV. Ben has been a charter member of the NIAAA and NYSAAA, as well as a lifetime member of both associations.

He received the NYSAAA Distinguished Service Award in 2007 and was awarded the NYSAAA Apple Award in 2009.

In 2014, Ben was elected to the Section IV Hall of Fame and the Basketball Coaches Association of New York (BCANY) Hall of Fame. In 2016, Ben received the Otis Sennett Award of Excellence for his outstanding service, leadership, and contributions; in 2018, Ben was inducted into the NYSPHSAA Hall of Fame. Congratulations, Ben! #9106 Greg Farrell has an award presented annually in his memory called the Greg Farrell Award. The award honors the legacy and life of Greg, a visionary educational leader and public servant, founder of NYC Outward Bound Schools and EL Education, and Executive Director of the Fund for the City of New York. A group of Greg's former colleagues from the early crew of NYC Outward Bound Schools staff established the award as a way to express their love and appreciation for Greg. Most of the group were personally recruited by Greg in the late 1980s to help bring the principles and practices of his beloved Outward Bound to New York City. All have felt supported and shaped by their long connection and friendship with Greg. A dreamer and doer, Greg possessed an exceptional ability to recognize and cultivate the gifts of others, support creativity, service, and adventure, and foster

innovation for a better, more just society. Each year, the award recognizes an individual or team which exemplifies the qualities that Greg exhibited and that he sought to nurture in others. The Greg Farrell Award—lighting sparks, living boldly, leaving the world a better place. This year's recipient was Tonya Dreher. #9191 Carleton Cleveland, Naples, FL, shared news of the first tenants being welcomed to the Immokalee Fair Housing Alliance's new 128 housing units in January 2023. Cleve is a member of the Alliance Board and supported the development work for this huge project and celebrates the great addition and improvements to the low-income housing situation of South Florida. #9555 Randy Quayle, Lake Placid, NY, was visiting his family in England during the late winter.

One outing was to Central Park UK, where Randy, wife Sibyl, and granddaughter Georgia stopped at the archery range. Says Randy, "All those years on the Dudley archery range really paid off!!!” Randy also shared that his Lake Placid sugarbush, Red Fox Maple, was up and running before the end of February this year. #10399 Hokey McKinley, Westport, NY, is retiring from coaching basketball after 25 years. With an impressive record of his teams winning 70% of their games and a total of 7 championship wins, Hokey is a staple on the court, a pillar of the community, and a beloved coach and mentor. Most recently, Hokey was joined by his daughter and former player, #22008 Willa McKinley, as his assistant coach. One former team member perfectly sums up the role he played within the Westport community by saying, "He was a real hero. Bringing the town together for his games, from the bench to the bleachers, we were all cheering for the same thing," and another states, "Hokey is the reason I'm here today. He taught me real lessons through basketball. I am forever grateful." Regarding his Last Whistle collection and hymnal, Matt writes, "As to the Last Whistles, I wish I could take full credit. My mom

stored them for two decades or so before sending them back to me when I was older and she was downsizing, but I'm stoked she did! I love that you digitized them all. A great idea. I'll be honest though, my hymnal is the one that I carried around with me a bit more through the years. I had gone back at one point in my late 20s to look around, and I swear I didn't steal it! But someone who was working there back then said I could keep one as they saw it meant a lot to me.

Alumni News #19623 Jack Ludtke, New York, NY, was recently appointed as a New York County Assistant District Attorney in September 2022 and sworn into New York's Second Department of Appeals as a licensed lawyer in January 2023. Jack writes, "I work in the District Attorney's Trial Division and am charged with litigating criminal cases from arraignment to deposition. It is a true pleasure to serve the people of Manhattan and to work towards more just outcomes for victims of crime, defendants, and the city at large. I keep my Dudley hymnal in my office as a reminder to bring the spirit of 'The other fellow first' with me into the courtroom every day, and the motto will always remain a fundamental part of my job!" I grew up in Vermont and go to college there, so Copenhagen is a big change for me! My main academic focus here is Psychopharmacology, and it has been really interesting to learn about this through a new cultural lens. Being abroad has given me the opportunity to connect with Camp friends who I wouldn't usually get to see during the year, which has been incredible. I am so grateful that Camp has given me the confidence to explore somewhere new!" #22739 Bernard Godophin, St-Bruno, QC, represented the University of Toronto Varsity Blues at the Canadian National swim competition in Victoria, British Columbia in February. He finished the meet with three silver medals, one individual in the 200 meter freestyle, and two for relays (4x200 meter freestyle and 4x100 medley relay as the team’s anchor). He was also named to the All-Canadian Team. This was Bernard's last meet of his career, as he decided not to train for the upcoming Paris Olympic Trials. #23146 Molly Caffry, Waitsfield, VT, shares that, after writing music since seventh grade, she recently had the chance to have her piece entitled If Fire Danced with Fire performed by the Vermont Symphony Orchestra over the December holidays. Gavin was working on the snow-making crew as they were trying to navigate a very warm spell on the mountain. Gavin was looking forward to returning to Northern Vermont University for the spring semester. #23727 Abbey Schwoebel, Westport, NY, completed her high school basketball career having scored a total of 1,794 points, making her the third highest scorer in Section VII history! Other achievements include MVAC MVP, Varsity Basketball (2022-2023), New York State 2nd Team All-State (2021-2022), MVAC 1st Team All-Star, Varsity Basketball (2019-2021), and MVAC 2nd Team Honorable Mention, Varsity Basketball (2018-2019). Abbey attributes her success to her family and her coach, #10399 Hokey McKinley, and we are all looking forward to seeing what the next stage of her basketball career at Hamilton College brings!

In Memoriam #6460 Philip Alden, Naples, FL, passed away on February 12, 2023. He came to Camp in 1942 as a Cub in Ross cabin. Phil was born in Boston and graduated with a BA in Psychology from Wesleyan University. After serving in the United States Air Force, Phil joined the firm of Towers, Perrin, Forster and Crosby, where he spent his entire career as a pension and employee benefits consultant.

Phil retired in 1986, moving to Florida in 1995 and to Moorings Park in 2010. In retirement, Phil was able to pursue all his avocations and hobbies, which included photography, computers, classical music, flying and performing with the Paradise Coastmen Barbershop Chorus. He was also an active community volunteer and was the founder and impresario of the Moorings Part Opera Theatre.

Phil is survived by his three sons: David, Stuart, and Kenneth Alden, and six grandchildren. #6556 Peter Townley Buchanan, Hobe Sound, FL, passed away on February 17, 2023. He first attended Camp in 1942, returned as a camper in 1948 in Dartmouth, as an Aide in 1949 in Lehigh, and in 1950 as a JL in Amherst. Peter grew up in Elizabeth, New Jersey, where he and his cousins forged what would become lifelong bonds with adventures there and on Lake Champlain, Westport, NY. He attended the Pingry School and Princeton University.

After graduating from Princeton, Buchanan spent his entire career at the First Boston Corporation, beginning as a trainee in 1956 and retiring as President and Chief Executive Officer in 1989. He served as a captain in the United States Air Force. Peter was a director and member of the Executive Committee of the Securities Industry Association, a director of the New York Stock Exchange, and was a member of the Bond Club of New York, serving as President in 1984.

He served as trustee and committee member for various organizations throughout his career.

Those who were close to him knew Peter as a true gentleman who was down-to-earth, humble, gracious, and generous. His many good friends loved Peter for his quick wit, dry sense of humor, and his kindness. His position on the values at First Boston was that integrity, honesty, and ethics came above all else. Ever the banker, Peter viewed these character traits as good long-term investments.

In retirement, nearly every day began by making quick work of the New York Times crossword puzzle. Peter was a skilled woodworker and handyman who loved working on projects, including miniature Adirondack chairs for his four grandchildren. His pocket knife was always at the ready for deck repairs or other odd jobs. Peter also liked to say he worked very hard in his varied retirement pursuits, which included fishing, golf, and naps. He loved playing golf with friends and family, and he was an avid fisherman who traveled the globe in pursuit of the next great catch.

Peter is survived by his son Richard (Ellen), his daughter Lindy Flanagan (#11365 David), and four grandchildren: Hunter Buchanan, Tara Buchanan Du (William), #19365 Peter Flanagan (fiancee Chapman Scheller), and #19965 Jack Flanagan.

He is also survived by his ex-wife, Cheryll Patty. #7261 William Clapp Bullock Jr., Orrington, ME, passed away on December 24, 2022.

Bill attended Camp as a second-half Cub in 1946; his nickname was “Bullfrog.” He returned as a Plebe in Columbia the following year.

Bill was born in Bronxville, NY, and grew up in Darien, CT, before making Bangor, ME, his home. He received his BA degree from Yale University and also attended New York University Graduate School of Business. Bullock began his storied banking career in 1958 with Morgan Guaranty Trust Company; when he retired in 2004, Bill was Chairman of the Board of Merrill Merchants Bank. He was especially proud of Merrill Merchants, having organized the bank in 1992, and was equally proud of the people who aided him in returning local banking decisions to Bangor and returning the Merrill and Merchants Bank names to prominence. During his career, Bill served on the board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, was president of the Main Bankers Association, and participated in several committees of the American Bankers Association.

Bullock was an avid fly-fisherman who led flyfishing trips for kids in Maine, traveled extensively to fish the waters of the world, and served as the director of the Atlantic Salmon Federation, where he worked tirelessly to conserve this magnificent fish. One of Bill’s passions was to return Atlantic salmon to their native Maine rivers through his ongoing support of local conservation and restoration initiatives, such as Downeast Salmon Federation.

Active in civic and community affairs throughout the state of Maine, Bullock was a governor-appointed trustee of the Maine Maritime Academy, a founding director of the Maine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and was appointed to a number of University of Maine special committees, including the President’s Advisory Council.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of almost 65 years, Dede. He was preceded in death by his sister, Cynthia. His four children and seven grandchildren inherit his many gifts: Wendy Bullock, Martha Bullock, Sarah Allen Bullock, and #12335 William Bullock (Bebe); Elisabeth, #20319 Adelaide, #21461 James, #21135 William, #22461 Charles, #23561 John, and #23435 Silas.

In Memoriam #7291 Charles Edward “Ed” Midgley died on February 26, 2023. Ed started as a Junior in Amherst Lodge in 1949 and ended his tenure in 1955 as a Leader in Cornell.

Ed’s obituary mentions his “many happy summers at Camp Dudley.”

Ed was born in Yonkers, NY, attending the Riverdale Country School and then Princeton University. ROTC at Princeton led to Ed’s service as a Naval Intelligence Officer in Japan, and afterwards the Naval reserves. Ed earned a graduate degree from Harvard Business School in 1962.

Ed had a long and accomplished career at Kidder, Peabody and Company, where he served on the boards of CUNO, Amoskeag and Fieldcrest Cannon. He was the Cochair of Investment Banking at Kidder before retiring in 2002.

As an active community member, Ed was chairman of the Tarrytown School Board, a board member of Abbot House, and a board member and chairman of Phelps Memorial Hospital. Ed was a lifelong runner, completing the New York City marathon in 1982. He was an ACBL life master in bridge and a founder of the Ardsley Duplicate Bridge Club.

Ed is survived by his wife, Laura, his children #10915 Ned (Margaret), #11163 David (Laura), Susan Komosa (Chris), Leslie Allen (Rob), Christie Allen (Jamey), Herbert Allen (Monica), Charlie Allen (Kristin), 20 grandchildren—some who have camp numbers—and his brother #8007 Frank. #7441 Philip “Lefty” Bisselle, Hamilton, NY, passed away at home on April 5, 2023, surrounded by his loving wife, Holly, and his children. Phil first arrived at Camp in 1947 as a Cub in Burr Lodge; by the end of that year, as the Last Whistle confirms, he had the nickname “Lefty,” which lasted a lifetime. Phil returned to Camp until 1952, first as a camper and then as a JL. Phil began his time as a Leader in 1954, serving until 1959 when he moved into a staff position from 1961-65. Phil spent three terms on the Board of Managers—1973-76, 1981-86, and 1992-94. Phil was the Board’s Vice-President from 1983-86.

Just last year, Lefty was thrilled to receive his 75-year pin.

Phil was born in New York, NY, and spent his childhood in New Hartford, NY, where he was a standout citizen, scholar, and athlete. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Colgate University, starring in his senior year as the captain of the basketball team. In 1959, Phil was drafted by both the NBA’s St. Louis Hawks and the US Army; he served in the Signal Corp at Ft. Monmouth, NJ, until 1961.

After several years of teaching in New Hartford, where Phil met and fell in love with Holly, he was appointed Associate Director of Admissions at Colgate University from 1964-70. During this time, Phil was instrumental in implementing co-education at Colgate. He then worked as Director of Freshman Financial Aid at Cornell University (1970-77) before spending 20 years as Director of Financial Aid at St. Lawrence University. While living in Canton, NY, Phil

was a mainstay in the community, taking on leadership roles for not-for-profit organizations such as Rotary, United Helpers Nursing Home, Canton Board of Education, First Presbyterian Church, and Camp Dudley.

Phil and Holly returned to Hamilton in 1999 for their retirement years. In addition to his volunteer work, Phil relished having more time for tennis, bridge, and travel. He was well known by all as a true gentleman, a gifted athlete, as well as a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. Phil will be missed for his kind smile, good nature, and steadfast example.

Phil is survived by the love of his life of 60 years, #13283 Holly, his three children, Wendy Wark, #12141 Andrew Bisselle (Diana), #13744 Thomas Bisselle (Julie), brother #8161 Walter “Righty” Bisselle, grandchildren #21041 Caitlin and #20941 Amanda Wark, #19541 Lucille and #19641 Agnes Bisselle, Nina Imperatore, #22744 Skylar, #23744 Sydney, and #26744 Solon Bisselle, and Liz Poe. #8722 Peter Prescott, Keeseville, NY, passed away on January 29, 2022. He first came to Camp as a Cub in 1954, continuing as a half-season camper until 1957. Peter was born in Plattsburgh, NY, and lived his entire life in Keeseville, NY. He graduated from Clarkson College and spent most of his career in the insurance industry. He finished his career as owner/partner of Cool Insuring of Glens Falls, retiring as Vice President. Peter’s love of family and community was second to none. He spent many years as a member of the Keeseville Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, was past President and Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club of AuSable Valley, and served on the board of AuSable Chasm, most recently as Treasurer. His love of music was passed down to his children and grandchildren where it lives today.

Left to cherish his memory are Colleen, his bride of 53 years, children Romeyn Prescott (Amanda) and Kelly Frady (Dean); his grandchildren, brother-in-law, niece, nephew, cousins and close friends. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his sister Phyllis Krueger in 2003.

In Memoriam #8804 M. John Storey, With humility, grace, peace and the loving joy of his family’s constant presence, M. John Storey, Williamstown, MA, passed ahead on November 26, 2022. A beautiful storyteller and writer, he was editing his parting thoughts and themes to include in this final piece during his last days with us. Camp Dudley’s motto, “The other fellow first,” anchored him at age 11; it is no surprise that he shared too many tales of friendship and gratitude to include as a tribute to every one of you here. Each of you hold a special chapter, complete with vivid memories that he carries with him as comfort.

For his teammates, bunkmates, classmates, colleagues, employees, caregivers, friends and family members, our Babo spent each and every day making life sweeter, kinder, and better for all of those other fellows in his life.

From the Williams Admissions office to the classroom, the court to the soccer field, John learned the grace of “coming in second”—crediting these opportunities of patience as life’s best teacher. A fullback’s varsity injury prompted Williams soccer Coach Clarence Chaffee to call him up as a sophomore, eventually leading the team as a cocaptain senior year. Coming in second for a Rotary fellowship gave him the chance to accept, instead, a scholarship to Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies; he and his new bride, Martha, experienced a honeymoon year abroad while he earned his Masters of International Affairs degree. He pursued a publishing career, first at Time Life International and then the Hearst Corporation (NYC)—a spot that opened up when the first choice candidate turned it down. John later followed his entrepreneurial spirit to Garden Way Inc., in Troy, NY; he and Martha then founded Storey Communications, Inc. (Storey Books) and a rural life of their own, planting their annual gardens and chasing chickens, dogs and ten grandkids on the family farm up on Lake Champlain—his favorite spot mowing many green acres atop his John Deere tractor. He rounded out his career with his marketing team at Berkshire Direct and then relished his time in his role as Development Director at Camp Dudley; consulting Dudley and Williams on publications near and dear to his heart brought him great joy.

John is survived by his loving wife, #18204 Martha— friend, girlfriend, wife, coparent, teammate, business partner, caregiver and true love since 1956 (married in 1965). Receiving the CDA Person of the Year Award in August, 2000, for his “dedication, deep concern for others, and commitment to the camp motto,” was a profoundly

satisfying tribute and honor. The Lifetime Service Award was created “to honor individuals who have selflessly given of their personal time, talent and treasures throughout their lives for the betterment of Camp;" first given to John and #18204 Martha Storey in August, 2019 “for their enduring and loyal service to Camp Dudley and Camp Kiniya, (and) will be named in perpetuity to all future recipients as the John and Martha Storey Lifetime Service Award.” His last wishes included this important guiding light: “One can never give back as much to Dudley as Dudley can give to you.” We are all blessed with the light and love of his indelible life.

Supported by contributions from family and friends, the M. John Storey Memorial Scholarship Fund has been created in the Camp Dudley Foundation in order to offer a “best-ever” summer experience for Dudley and Kiniya campers for generations to come. The family is forever grateful to those who give in love and generosity to honor the many gifts that John has given Camp. #9672 Stephen Braisted Luzzatto passed away at his home in North Carolina on February 5, 2023. He was 72 years old.

Stephen came to Camp as a Senior in 1961.

Stephen was a graduate of the Hotchkiss School in Connecticut and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

He was a media specialist in New York City. During his career Stephen created, wrote, and produced many well-known advertising clips for television. He was an avid golfer, loving husband, and doting father and grandfather.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jane, his two sons, #14672 Michael and Christopher, his daughter-in-law, three grandchildren, his brother, #9279 Alan Luzzatto, and his nephew, #14279 Matthew Luzzatto. He was predeceased by his father, #4645 Giovanni Luzzatto. #9791 Eberhard Mangold, 84, passed away on March 25, 2023. Eberhard first came to Dudley in 1961. Director #2700 Bob Marshall introduced him to Camp and invited him to lead the first German group from the Hannover YMCA in 1962, marking the successful start of the German Exchange program. In the same year the cabin village at Camp Abbensen was founded, which from then on welcomed campers from Dudley. #8191 Alf Kaemmerlen was the first Dudley Exchange leader. As the trailblazer of the Hannover YMCA, Eberhard passed on the spirit of "The other fellow first" to the Intercamp at Abbensen and worked diligently to inspire the future generations of German campers.

Eberhard joined the YMCA Hannover at a young age, and through his athletic talent, became a member of its successful basketball team. He worked as a teacher of mathematics, physical education, and English in Hannover, where he met his wife #14706 Ingrid, a teacher of German, religion, and music. They were married in June 1966 and

In Memoriam immediately went to the United States to serve as guest teachers at Riverdale Country School in the Bronx. Eberhard and Ingrid were inseparable as a couple and decided to walk all of life’s paths together. The couple spent the summer of 1967 on Lake Champlain, working in various capacities at Camp. They returned to Dudley many summers, reuniting with dear friends like #7681 George and #8070 Ben Nelson, #8804 John Storey, and #7381 Paul Lutz, making numerous new friends over the years.

After the Exchange stopped in the 1970s, Eberhard— along with #10064 Ekkehard "Ekki" Albrecht and the support of Ben Nelson—convinced Director #7405 William "Willie" Schmidt to resume the Exchange in 1990. Since then, Eberhard and Ingrid have welcomed and seen off each and every Dudley and subsequent Kiniya group at Hannover Airport. Eberhard passionately supported and inspired the Dudley community in the Hannover YMCA as a "Dudley Man" and made this commitment a central part of his life.

During Reunion in 1999, Eberhard was honored with the Camp Dudley "Man of the Year Award" for taking “the spirit of ‘The other fellow first’ beyond the gates of Dudley into the classroom and the boardroom. He served Camp Dudley and the YMCA near and far, from the shores of Lake Champlain to Hannover, Germany."

Eberhard was predeceased by his beloved wife Ingrid in 2016. The legacy that Eberhard leaves behind will continue to flourish and live in the hearts of women and men. #10478 Arlin A. Jorge died suddenly on January 28, 2023.

He was 66. Arlin came to Camp from 1967-70. The family asked that donations in his memory be sent to Camp Dudley in lieu of flowers. Arlin’s memorial service was held February 11, 2023 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Glen Cove, NY. #10716 James Richard “Jim” Race, Oxford, NY, passed away on February 14, 2023. Jim first came to Camp in 1968 as an Aide. He moved up in leadership and was the Leader in Cushman in 1970. Jim returned in 1980 as a member of the maintenance team and served as a cabin leader in 1981.

Some of Jim’s fondest memories were of times spent at Camp Dudley. Jim always enjoyed working with younger people and serving as counselor. Coaching youth basketball and soccer was a special enjoyment for Jim which he continued doing throughout his life as long as he was able.

Jim lived in Oxford, NY, all his life, attending Trinity Pawling Academy and Herkimer College. After getting his teaching degree, Jim taught various courses at Georgetown Minimum Security Prison and at BOCES in North Norwich. He was a proud and loving dad and a caring, helpful friend to many.

Jim is survived by his two sons, Cameron and Brady, his mother, sisters, brother and stepsisters, as well as his dear friend and companion, Veronica.

#11310 Herbert “Herb” T. Burke passed away on October 27, 2022 at Essex Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare, Elizabethtown, NY. He was 83 years old and a faithful member of the maintenance team at Camp from 1972-99. He knew much about Camp’s physical plant and played a crucial role in keeping the grounds, fields, and facilities in great shape for the campers. Herb was predeceased by his wife Ellen and is survived by his brothers Bruce, Tom, and Bob, along with nieces and nephews. #11373 G. Michael “Mike” Stevens passed away suddenly on February 28, 2023 while doing what he loved most—boating in the Caribbean with Leila, his wife of over 26 years, and close friends. He also loved Camp Dudley, where he and Leila were married. Mike returned to serve as a trustee and was a member of the board from 2011-15. His relationship with Camp was lifelong, and Dudley was one of his favorite places on earth.

Mike was born in Syracuse, NY, and grew up in DeWitt, NY, where he attended the Jamesville-Dewitt Schools. He graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon High School and matriculated at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY. Mike began his career as a Radio Market Analyst at Katz Media Group, going on to work at Equitable Financial, where he managed the MLB’s first-ever corporate sponsorship program. He then worked for the NBA, where he became the Vice President of Marketing Partnerships. Following his success there, Mike became employee #148 at eBay and launched its sports business.

In 2003 Mike served as the Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at the Washington Commanders. He then returned to CT with his family to accept the position of Chief Marketing Officer of the New York Football Giants. He held that position until 2019 and was fortunate to be a part of the team when they won two Super Bowls.

After leaving the Giants, Mike became Chief Executive Officer of Impressio.tech, a materials science innovator. Additionally, Mike led MS2 Ventures LLC, an advisory and investment firm, and was an advisor to Footprint International, a company dedicated to creating sustainable packaging. He also served on several boards. In 2022, Mike graduated from the Global Executive Leadership Program (GELP) at the Yale School of Management.

As much as Mike loved being out on the water on his boat, “Willow,” he was a devoted husband and an engaged father, son, and brother. He cherished his four-legged companion, who, of course, was named “Dudley.” His pride in his family was evident every time he spoke of them; Mike’s beaming smile and hearty laugh were legendary.

Mike was frequently consulted due to his sports business experience, and he always made time to take a phone call and assist anyone. A consummate networker with many long-term friends and colleagues, Mike endeavored to help those around him flourish.

In Memoriam Mike leaves behind his wife, Dr. Leila Garrett-Stevens, and his two children, #21373 Will and #22073 Owen.

He is survived by his mother, Sallie Stevens, and his three sisters #13293 Kristin and #13303 Stephanie Stevens, and Heather Clayton (Carter), six nieces, and one nephew.

Erol is survived by twin daughters Lucia and Olivia, his partner, Kimberly Sterdan, his mother and stepfather, two stepbrothers and uncles and cousins. He is predeceased by his father, his aunt Christa, and cousin/role model Joerg Hoepken.

#11839 Roger J. Torpie, Jr., Lewisville, TX, passed away at his home on March 16, 2023, with his family at his side. Like his brothers and son, Roger attended Camp from 1975-79. Willie Schmidt was the director at the time, and both he and Camp were well-loved by Roger.

Roger spent most of his childhood in Bayside, NY, where he attended Holy Cross High School. He graduated from Marist College and enjoyed being a member of the college choir as a student there. Always a music lover, Roger saw many of the world’s most beloved bands at a young age.

Later in life, Roger moved to Texas for work, meeting and marrying Karen McMahon. Together they relocated to New York, where they welcomed Vincent Dominic to the world. The family then moved back to Lewisville, TX. Roger was active in his Texas church community and was also a leader in the Lewisville Boy Scouts. He passed on his love of music to Vincent, and together they enjoyed many memorable concerts.

To all who knew him, Roger will be remembered for his compassion for those in need and his love of a good time. He leaves behind his son, #23539 Vincent, his mother, Patricia Torpie, his brother #11894 Douglas, and his sister, Kathryn Parker. He will be reunited with his namesake and father, Roger John Torpie, and his brother #13189 Andrew in peaceful repose.

#19508 Thomas B. Arnold passed away unexpectedly Monday, October 24, 2023, after sustaining injuries from a bicycle fall.

Tom was a member of the Hike Hut staff from 2005 to 2013. He spent much of his time at Camp on the Challenge Course and leading wilderness trips. Tom’s kindness, love of kids, dedication to experiential education, intellect, sense of humor, and generosity of spirit will be forever remembered and missed by all who knew him.

Tom was born in Bronxville, NY, and spent his childhood in Old Greenwich, CT, where he attended Greenwich Country Day School. He studied at the Pomfret School and completed a postgraduate year abroad at Haileyburg in Hertfordshire, England. Tom began work in advertising after graduating from Kenyon College. He married Kathleen Reilly; they moved to Princeton, NJ, to raise a family. The marriage ended in divorce. Tom worked in Manhattan for many years, then spent several years managing the Halo Farm and Halo Pub ice cream shops. He met and married Martha Bolster in 2001.

Tom will be remembered for his love of adventure.

After several adolescent canoe trips in Maine, Tom became an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed kayaking, canoeing, camping, hiking, biking, and jogging. He developed his wilderness and outdoor education and leadership skills while on a NOLS expedition in 2004 to the Wind River Valley of Wyoming.

Through the Bolster family, Tom became acquainted with Camp Dudly in Westport, NY, and Tom spent several summers sharing his love of adventure with campers. He had a unique ability to connect effortlessly with the young and the old. Tom later worked at Project U.S.E., Outward Bound, and the Princeton-Blairstown Center, where he was considered an integral part of their outdoor education staff.

Tom continued to work during his retirement.

Tom ran ten marathons—his first and fastest was in Pittsburgh shortly after his 40th birthday. Tom was known for being intellectually curious, a prolific reader, and interested in music of many genres. He was a source of kindness, creativity, gentility, wisdom, and affability.

Tom will be greatly missed by his loving wife Martha Bolster, his daughter Lucy Arnold Gore with former spouse Kathleen Arnold, Lucy’s husband Nick, two beloved grandchildren, half-sisters Jennifer Arnold and Stephanie Pacheco, the entire Bolster family as well as his many great friends. He was predeceased by his parents Stuart Arnold and Ann Reynolds.

#13847 Erol Turk passed away on December 23, 2022 with his family and friends by his side. Erol was at Camp in 1985 and 1986. Born in Plattsburgh, NY, Erol graduated from Westport Central School as valedictorian; he attended both SUNY Albany and SUNY Plattsburgh and received his MA degree in education from Cambridge College.

He began his teaching career in Pittsfield, MA, but found his dream job at St. John’s Academy in Houston, TX, in 1997. He taught physics, self-defense, ethics, money management and negotiation, all to prepare junior and senior students for college. Erol loved the martial arts, opening his own studio, training in Thailand, and participating in Houston’s Kickboxing Club.

Due to a spinal cord injury in 2017, Erol was confined to a wheelchair. It changed his life but not who he was. Due to an iron will, determination, and physical therapy, he returned to St. John’s to teach, never losing his sense of humor and joy for life.

In Memoriam #21219 Jane Cameron Lee of Wilton, CT, passed away January 25, 2023. Jane was a wonderful Dudley mom and served on the Board of Trustees from 2009-13 and on the inaugural Board of the Camp Dudley Foundation in 2014.

Born in New York City, Jane graduated high school from Laurel School in Shaker Heights, OH, where she made lifelong friends. She received a BBA from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. There she was part of the Delta Gamma Sorority and remained an avid Michigan Wolverines fan, passing her "Go Blue" enthusiasm on to her children.

Jane married Nicholas Lee in 1989 and they raised their family in Wilton, CT. She was an active, inspiring community volunteer, serving on the boards of the Wilton Library and A Better Chance of Wilton, a program from which she recruited great kids for Camp. Her greatest joy was taking her beloved dog Matt in service to the Norwalk Hospital, where they were enthusiastically welcomed as the brightest light of the day.

A great cook and master griller, Jane loved hosting dinner parties for friends, and was known for her “dinner party book” which documented event details. She was also a loving mother, wife and an active dog mom.

She is survived by her husband Nick, her children #23219 Margaret (#18080 Alex Flynn) and #19619 Henry (Kaleigh), and her loyal dog Teddy. Jane is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law and many loving nieces and nephews, cousins, and in-laws. She leaves behind a legacy of devoted friendships, near and far. Jane was predeceased by her father, Gordon Cameron, and her perfect dog Matt. #24303 Penelope Griggs Doerge, daughter of Chad and Kate Doerge, sister of Henry and Frankie, a beloved granddaughter, niece, and cousin, died at home in Glen Cove, NY, on November 10, 2022, surrounded by family and friends. She attended Kiniya in 2016.

Born in New York City, Penny attended Beginnings Nursery School until moving to Long Island in 2011. She attended The Green Vale School, Pomfret School, and most recently, Portledge School.

Penny was honored with the Buckley Award for Effort and Achievement by The Green Vale School upon her graduation in 2021.

Penny was a model of grace, positivity, and courage.

Diagnosed with neurofibromatosis as an infant, Penny never let this define her or hold her back. She lived her life “Walking on Sunshine,” in the words of her favorite song.

Penny was a talented artist, fashionista, world traveler, social media influencer, and the founder of “Glam Camp,” a summer program for young girls. She made an impact everywhere she went by shining her bright light. Penny was an inspiration and a teacher to people of all ages.

John Storey Tribute By #11904 John Ulin

I

n June of 2005, I arrived on campus to drop off our son for his junior season and was greeted immediately by #8804 John Storey. He asked me, “How many years have you been connected to Camp Dudley?” I had to calculate the answer and when I did, I gulped. “This is my 30th year,” I told him. That moment captures a lot about John. He was Camp’s Director of Development at the time, and yet there he was greeting campers and families as they arrived. He reached out to greet me and make me feel welcome literally as soon as I walked onto the campus. And he asked a seemingly innocuous question that was intended to impart a subtle lesson that I still remember today. I was a young-ish (then 39) Board member, and John had taken me under his wing. Always the teacher, he asked me a friendly question about my longevity at Camp that was intended to suggest that I had accumulated a lengthy history that I should consider.

Did it bring wisdom, some knowledge of Camp and its mission, a position in a community that required me to be considered in my thoughts and actions because others were listening to trustees’ words and watching what we did? I later realized the obvious fundraising and development benefits to greeting alums and their kids as they arrived at Camp, and that only reinforced how much of John was in that moment. Development, he used to say, was everybody’s business. And he certainly made it his business, always making and building connections between Camp and its community — because it could pay dividends in the future; those connections are, after all, what makes camp “Camp.”

John Storey died Saturday, November 26, 2022.

I have not had time to feel sad about it yet. My thoughts have been preoccupied with appreciation for everything he did for me and for Camp Kiniya and Camp Dudley.

John was a Dudley legend in his own right. He arrived at Camp as a second half Plebe in 1955 and stayed for a lifetime. He was a well known leader in the early 1960s, Junior Division Head in 1962, and leader of the German Exchange trip the following season. John served three terms on Dudley’s Board, spread across the 1970s, ‘80s, and early ‘90s. He was the Board Chair from 1987-88.

For many years, John and his wife Martha edited and published Camp’s alumni newsletter (now The Other Fellow First magazine) through the publishing company that John ran in Williamstown, Massachusetts. When I joined the Board in 2003, John was Camp’s Director of Development. He coordinated our first $10 million capital campaign, which significantly enabled us to purchase Camp Kiniya and launch our girls camp in 2006. And, of course, John and Martha sent their kids — #13804 Matt and sisters #14002 Jenn and #14504 Jess — to Camp, as

many grandchildren have followed. In recognition of his enormous contributions, John was named Camp Dudley’s Person of the Year in 2000 and he and Martha are the first and only recipients of Camp’s Lifetime Service Award, which is named for them.

John was such an important person in my life. A mentor and a hero. I am one of the many Camp people he took under his wing and helped to understand what it means to serve Camp Kiniya and Camp Dudley and how best to use our talents to do that. He taught me how to be a trustee — my finer points are lessons learned from him, the flaws are mine alone — and was always a sounding board on tough questions. John was a seemingly never ending source of important lessons. He used to tell a story about his early employment as a door-to-door encyclopedia salesman. The diligent young man wanted to memorize the pitch and deliver it smoothly in his own way. But the company told him to read from the script because it was more awkward and would engender sympathy and a connection with homeowners who would be more likely to buy encyclopedias. As with all his stories, there was a hidden message about humility and making yourself vulnerable and open to connection with others. It was just one of the lessons he taught us. Your faith (either religious or in something else) may not change the world, but it can change your life, so follow it. Pursue a path you love. Others may be better than you, but it will bring out your best and you will be fulfilled. Seize the day.

Remember that from those to whom much is given, much will be required. They echo in my head and fill me with love and gratitude. This community and this Board Chair will miss you dearly, John. Thank you for your lifetime of service to Camp and for your guidance and friendship.
