From the Editor “Dudley will live in the hearts of men.” Long after the final blast of the canon, the last lowering of the flag, and the closing note of taps has echoed across campus, it is the memories and friendships that live on from what was yet another incredible summer. While we may no longer be on the shores of Lake Champlain, amidst the Adirondacks, the connections we made, bonds we formed, and stories we created endure through the fall, carry us through the winter, and stay with us for the rest of our lives. I encourage you to continue to build those friendships throughout the year, and the years to come, and reminisce on the memories you made and the great times you had with each other at Dudley this summer. While nothing can take the place of those memories and bonds, The Last Whistle serves as an encapsulation and reminder of yet another incredible summer we all experienced and shared together. Working on the Last Whistle is one of the most daunting, challenging, yet incredibly fun and rewarding things a Dudleyite can do. Consolidating two months of a jam-packed summer, thousands of photographs, and countless memories into a book that is roughly two hundred pages long is no small order. But, getting to relive all of those wonderful moments and piece them together in a way that encapsulates those eight incredible weeks has been a privilege. I hope you have as much fun pouring through these pages and reliving the memories as I had while putting the book together, and I hope that this year’s Last Whistle serves as a reminder to you of what was yet another “best-ever” summer both this winter and in the many years to come! All that said, it would have been impossible for me to complete this book without the help of an incredible team of people to make it all happen. First of all, thank you Matt for your wonderful leadership and for allowing me the opportunity to do this again. Thank you to Dawn and Anita for your help with sending me rosters, chapel talks, proofreading, and your countless other contributions to this book. Endy, though we only had you for a few short weeks, your presence was a pleasure, your sense of humor made every day better, and your pictures and skills (and obviously that lens) made you an essential part of the team. Kirsten, it is hard to believe this was only your third summer, but it has been amazing watching you grow from someone who knew next to nothing about Dudley, to someone who has fully immersed herself in all aspects of camp, become an essential member of the publications team, and an incredible friend. And to Lefty: working with you, and even more importantly, becoming friends with you over the past seven summers has been one of the greatest pleasures of my Dudley tenure. It is amazing to think back to 2012 and how much the world and our jobs have changed over the years, but the ride has been amazing, and I couldn’t be more proud of the work we’ve done together. Finally, and most importantly, thank you to everyone who was a part of this incredible summer! If it weren’t for you, the memories, stories, and friendships wouldn’t exist, we wouldn’t have anything to photograph, and this book would serve no purpose. But it all did happen, you all lived each day to the fullest, and now we have 200 pages of proof of that. THANK YOU!!! - #18801 P.S. Dedication #18070 Dave Nelson
Presented at the Final Banquet on August 16, 2019 by Drew Rider Awarded at the end of every summer, The Last Whistle Dedication is one of the highest honors one can receive at Camp Dudley. Presented to a member of our community who shows a devotion and love towards others, and this place we all cherish, and an unwavering commitment to living by the motto, The Other Fellow First. This year, not only does the recipient meet those expectations, he far surpasses them. Tonight’s honoree has worn many hats and occupied many roles during his years spent attending, working, living and even growing up here. Starting as a cub back in 1998, he rose up through the ranks from camper to leadership to D-Head and now staff, where he has worked in nearly every department at camp, from Brodie to the A-Hut to Spiritual, the Hike Hut, Leadership Development, and some particularly significant contributions by way of some incredible photography to my own publications team. To say he is multi-talented would be an understatement, and I think I can speak for everyone by saying that he is always an incredibly valuable member of every team he is on.
baptized here, our recipient has literally been, in varying capacities, attending camp since he was born. In fact, he even lived on campus with his family year-round for the first 8 years of his life. Due to this, while we don’t quite have hard evidence to back this up, our director, Matt Storey, is on record While he has logged over 20 years here from as saying our recipient has netted more baskets on camper through leadership to staff, this year’s the Dudley courts than anyone else. dedicee’s Dudley story started long before he stepped foot in his cub cabin. One of the few Though he might be most at home on the basketball people in this room who can actually say they were courts, this year’s recipient has become what many have come to call him, a Dudley Renaissance Man. As I mentioned, he has had a strong presence in nearly every department, but this doesn’t come from a restlessness or desire to move around to every part of camp. Our recipient has worked in so many different places because he has been asked to do so, and without hesitation, has always said yes, because he will do whatever he can to best serve Camp Dudley and its people, all while putting his own unique twist or spin on things.

And that is why I am standing here tonight. While his sheer amount of time given and spent here is

Dedication notable, what really defines our recipient’s tenure here is his generosity. I am not exaggerating when I say that he will literally do anything to help someone out. He goes where he is needed to go, and does what is needed to be done, without hesitation, and not for any recognition or personal gain, but because he will do anything to benefit our camp and ensure that everyone has the best summer possible. And it is this generosity that also defines our honoree’s personal relationships. For those of us who have the pleasure of calling him a friend, he is always the person that you can go to for a laugh, a great conversation, a compassionate ear, or a shoulder to cry on. He has a generous heart and boundless empathy to match, and will do anything he can to improve anyone’s day or life.
memories of Dudley in the midst of a long and cold winter when summer couldn’t seem further away.
Long-time friend and fellow D-Head Carl Jackson said of our recipient, “he is truly a multi-talented, multi-faceted individual who has made camp a better place for so many people over the years. He doesn’t bake bread for himself to eat; he bakes But mostly though, he is a caring and thoughtful it to share with others. He takes and distributes his guy, who is an incredible listener, a deep thinker, stunning photography, while asking for nothing in and an amazing friend.” This statement speaks to return, because he knows that his pictures bring the heart of who our honoree is. A compassionate, people joy. He writes and sends letters because empathetic, and generous person who will go to all he knows that getting one in your mailbox in the lengths to help and be there for anyone from a total middle of February brings you some warmth and stranger to his closest friend without hesitation, while expecting nothing in return. If there is something he can do to make someone’s life better, he will do it, and for all of us, if there is something he can do to make this place the best place it can be, he will be the one taking action. Tonight I am privileged to give this dedication to someone who fully embodies what it means to be a true Dudleyite, who lives a life characterized by his devotion to others, and shows us all what it means to put The Other Fellow First. Whether you know it or not, every single person in this room has had their lives and summers improved by the selfless actions of this individual, and while he has never, and will never ask for recognition or anything in return, tonight we honor someone who truly deserves our thanks and appreciation for his years of loyalty, hard work, dedication, compassion, love, and friendship. And with that, it is my distinct honor and pleasure to dedicate The 2019 Last Whistle to camper number 18070, Dave Nelson.

I don’t know how I got here. I mean I know the series of events that got me here. It just sort of seems improbable. Yet here I am, with all of you, standing at the precipice of the 135th summer of Camp Dudley, building another chapter in this legendary institution. But as improbable as it might be for me, or any of us, to be here right now, here we are, tasked with this mammoth responsibility. But let me start from the beginning. It was the summer of 1984, I was 6 years old and living on the Upper West Side of Manhattan with my parents, where my father was the pastor of a church. It was July 13, 1984 to be exact and my mother had picked up a copy of the New York Times Metropolitan Section and read an article about some old camp for boys somewhere in the Adirondack Mountains that was turning 100 years old. And as she read about this storied institution, with funny traditions and a charismatic director she thought, that would be a great spot for Evan some day. But I was 6 and it was far away so she put the paper down and carried on her day. Three years later my father was appointed to a tiny church in a tiny town in far upstate New York called Westport. And when we arrived, one of the first things we heard about was this old camp for boys with funny traditions and a charismatic director right up the road and my mom thought, hey, that sounds familiar. In fact, my father was invited to preach at that camp one Sunday and so we went to visit that camp for boys and we met that charismatic director, whose name was Willie. And after my father preached in this beautiful outdoor chapel in front of a sea of boys in blue blazers we visited a cavernous dining hall filled with those
14
same boys who had draped their nice blue blazers from the rafters. It looked fun and full of life. The next summer, my parents got a phone call from Willie. He said that one of the boys that summer needed to leave early and it was only a week into the 2nd session and would Evan like that spot at camp. My parents said that’s very generous of you, Willie, but we can’t really afford it. So Willie said, don’t worry, we’ve got a scholarship for him. So they said yes, and I said, no. You see, too many great and wonderful things were happening in my life...I had a paper route making cash money, the Essex County Fair was around the corner, and I was the starting shortstop for the Westport Youth Commission Baseball Team. The world was my oyster... money in my pocket, baseball glory at hand, and the North Country’s social event of the season on my calendar. But my parents had other ideas and said, you’re going to Dudley. And, in fact, I realize now that it was the only thing they ever made me do. And it turns out it was the most important. I stepped on campus, just days after learning I would be attending, and I was greeted by my Cub leader, Don Schmidt, Willie’s son, and was swept up in the whirl of controlled chaos, laughter, com-

Chapel Talks petition, and friendship. My life was changed forever. Over the ensuing decades of being a part of this community I made my best friends, found incredible mentors, had the most formative experiences of my life, and in fact, met my amazing wife here. Now, my story is unique to me, but I know you all have your own improbable journey to be in this cavernous dining hall right now, whether you’re spending your first summer with us like Alfie Payne, are a 5th generation camper like Ian Kotz, or have been away for quite some years and are returning to the fold like Grady Shea. No matter what your story, you’re here today, blessed with the unbelievable privilege and awe-inspiring responsibility of delivering another life-changing summer at Camp Dudley. I don’t know exactly how we all got here, but I know we’re exactly where we’re supposed to be. But maybe there’s another question, why is a summer here such a big deal? Well, I think there are two answers to that. First, because the tradition that we’re carrying on here this summer is nothing short of a radical transformation in the very idea of how we educate young people. A former president of Harvard College once said, “The summer camp is the most important step in education that America has given to the world.”. And guess what, this camp, started in 1885, is the grandaddy of that contribution. Think about that, in the millennia that humans have been educating one another, this institution represents a watershed moment in how we think about what it means to be and become educated, to be human, to be a citizen, to be the best version of ourselves. All of us here are carrying on that incredible idea. Second, and more importantly, this place is not just a radical transformation in education, but it can be a radical transformation in the lives of the boys who walk through those gates today. Today I think of the Cubs and other first year campers who’s lives will now be inexorably linked to this place. Beyond the history of this camp, is the indel-
ible impact it has on the boys, who by some random stroke of magic now, improbably, find themselves joining this old camp for boys, with its funny traditions, and its charismatic director. My father died last February, and in fact, today would have been his 77th birthday. But at his memorial service in May, the pews were filled with not just my family, but with the men and women of the Dudley family. The boys I met as a camper, the young men I formed incredible bonds with as a leader, Matt, Davo, Marnie, current staff members, and even board members came to stand with me during my family’s time of sorrow. In fact, they gathered with me in the very same church where my father was serving when my mother first read about this old camp for boys, with funny traditions, and the charismatic director. It was a fitting twist, to an improbable story, that would have brought a wry smile to my father and that I know, filled my mother with joy in a time of sadness. It’s no big deal then, we’re only changing lives and carrying on a tradition that has transformed education as we know it. No doubt, it’s a big lift, but somehow, improbably, you and I are here, with this magnificent task at hand and it’s time to get to work.

Jack McDonough Thursday, July 4, 2019
Good morning everyone! My name is Jack McDonough, and I’m the leader over in Columbia Cabin. If you happened to miss all of the canons and loud horns and such, it’s the fourth of July! So that’s cool. Go America! Alright, I’m just gonna hop right into it. When I was in the 5th grade, my family adopted my sister. My mom and stepdad approached me about adopting a little girl from Vietnam. I was at first opposed, because I wanted to adopt an older British brother – I was in a big Harry Potter phase – but, they eventually sold me on the idea. While the trip to Vietnam to get Juliet (her name is Juliet by the way) was pretty rattling to my 10-yearold self, I’m going to skip over that part of the story, and just jump to the moment I met her. My parents had spent the day driving to the orphanage, which was deemed too much of a trip for me to take and got back to our hotel room late. To be honest, I don’t remember much except for the fact that she threw up on me the first time I held her. More than that though, I remember feeling love, and a desire to protect her, which I’ve felt every day since then, though she can test that on occasion. Now a little more background, I’m from Bronxville, NY (Sco Cos), and my mom taught in the Elementary and Middle School for quite a few years. My sister went to Bronxville with me until I graduated high school, at which point my mom and stepdad sold our house and made the move up to Man-
16
chester, VT. My sister enrolled in the Maple Street School (shout out to Ike’s dad), and my family became Vermonters. I love Manchester, and while my family loves it too in many ways, it can be hard on my sister. I get to go to California, and only experience Manchester in brief snippets of a week or two at a time. My sister was fully entrenched in Vermont life, and an unfortunate aspect of that is a pretty blatant lack of diversity. As an Asian girl in often entirely white classrooms, she faced some difficulty. While the overwhelming majority of kids in her classes have been incredibly kind, there have been a few times when comments from others led her to question her own place in a world full of white kids. Seeing her cry, because she felt like she didn’t belong, was not only heartbreaking, but infuriating. This is my little sister, and while she doesn’t look like me in complexion, that doesn’t separate her from the rest of our family and should never make her doubt herself in our community. She’s 11 years old, and I would like to think that the comments made towards her come from a lack of understanding, and not malicious intent. But regardless of their intentions, they still affect her in the same way.
The Last Whistle • 2019
Chapel Talks
The sad thing is my sister’s situation is not even close to unique. All over our country people face discrimination every day. My sister is lucky enough to have an incredibly supportive family who can reinforce the fact that she belongs in our country, but many don’t have that privilege. What I’m trying to say is that we have work to do. Discrimination against people because of race, sex, religion – the way they were born – is unacceptable and happens far too often. It’s clear that the U.S. is divided, but at least the conversation has been started.
What I’m trying to say is that the United States has provided Juliet with more opportunity than would have ever been available to her in Vietnam, or the vast majority of other countries around the world. I’m not saying that everyone in the U.S. has the advantages my sister and I have been blessed with, but there are opportunities for all here that are entirely foreign to the citizens of many countries. The United States was built by immigrants, and without the hard work of everyone, we would not be where we are today.
While Juliet has seen racism already, she still loves our country. When she was born, she was left in the middle of the night at the gates of an orphanage. If our family hadn’t adopted her, she would most likely still be at that orphanage, and might’ve spent the rest of her life there. Right now, Juliet is skiing for a few weeks at Mt. Hood before she comes back to Vermont to ride horses and place soccer (she’s way more athletic than I am) and can take a long hot shower afterwards. Not only that, but she loves her school and is getting a great education.
I want to end this by saying that although our diversity is what has led to the most contention in our country, it’s also what makes us strong. All of us here contribute to the culture of Dudley, which preaches inclusion of all. All of us here also contribute to the culture of the U.S. and the world as a whole (granted in a smaller way). If we can spread love and inclusion, then we’re spreading the Dudley spirit. Thanks for hanging with me this long. In the words of Maya Angelou, “in diversity there is beauty, and there is strength.” Thank you.

Fun fact, my mom can float. Well, not actually, but after years of meditation and reflection, Gretchen has gotten pretty darn close. In regard to myself however, there are times where I find myself stuck to the ground, with my mind clouded by apprehension and anxiety. In the past, whenever I would express my worries or complaints to my mom, I would often be met with a Dalai Lama esque meditation mantra or quote; and she would often be me with an exaggerated eye roll. The exhilarating, yet tolling transition from high school to college is when I finally began to take her wisdom to heard. And once I actually started applying this wisdom to most facets of my daily routine, I can confidently say that conscious mindfulness has changed my life. The most impactful revelations my mom taught me (via our long-winded phone calls) revolve around judgement, acceptance, and presence. These revelations are simple and seemingly common sense, yet not intuitive to our fast-moving brains. The first lesson, judgement, focuses on our ego. Subconsciously, the ego thrives on creating divisions amidst often inescapable differences such
as culture, political affiliation, reputation, or even hair color. Humans have the unfortunate tendency to label differences, both big and small, causing us to treat situations or individuals as that label instead of who they are. Instead of treating a notoriously different cabin or teammate as “weird,” try ditching the label of “weird” and treat them as someone you need to get to know better. I can recall times at camp and at home where I wish people would have gotten to know me, in spite of my weirdness. Outside of camp, this lesson is extremely applicable; instead of treating a teacher as a teacher, start a conversation with them. You will be surprised to learn that they don’t actually sleep in the classroom. The second piece of wisdom I have learned is acceptance. If you have ever found yourself waiting in line for more mashed potatoes or stuck in traffic, you know that no amount of road rage will quicken your commute and yelling at Dannie will not shorten the line. Take a deep breath and recognize that you are doing everything in your power to achieve your current aspiration. Complaining about how long the line is will only bring negativity to yourself and those around you. I am sorry that you are feeling tired today, but guess what, so is everyone else. Although easier said than done, accepting

the realities of life that come tethered to the human experience will bring tranquility and positivity. The last, and possibly most important lesson I will share today is presence. In the fast paced world we share outside of Dudley, we find ourselves primarily concerned with events of the past and future instead of bringing awareness to the present moment. I’m not trying to come for Dom’s brand when I say that we are human beings not human doings.
ing about school because no matter what, it’s happening. While you are enjoying camp for these last two days, take the time to focus on being present with the incredible people around you.
Being present and just being, frees us from the worries of what will happen in one minute, one day, or one month – offering a much richer human experience. Here’s an example, raise your hand if you have ever been reading a book and had to go back a page or so as you found your mind wandering. Instead of soaking in the knowledge in front of you, I’m guessing that thoughts of the past or future served as a distraction. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but most of the people in this room, myself included, will be returning to school in the next two weeks. Don’t waste your energy worry-

Tiger Lilly Award Selected Annually by the Head of Witherbee - Diana McGuigan George #18079
Each year, we use this space to recognize the best in performing arts at Camp Dudley by awarding the The Tiger Lilly Award. This award is given annually to someone who best exemplifies the spirit of Camp Dudley and Witherbee Hall - dedication, fun, and courage. First of all, a big thank you to everyone who participated in Witherbee Hall this summer. Whether you were on stage acting, playing music, performing magic tricks, dancing, or working behind the scenes on the tech crew, you helped create some really special moments at Dudley this summer. Wednesday Shows, led by Aicher Heron, featured some memorable acts and talents such as the Grateful D-Heads, magic from Max Steen, weekly guest hosts, touching slideshows, the continuation of Tough Guys, and the introduction of the Head Bangers. Not to mention dance solos, drum solos, and many musical acts. Thank you to all who participated in our fun Wednesday Nights.
Each Saturday we featured dramatic productions and in the first session we opened with some terrific leader and staff performances in “Almost Maine.” Endy Perry and Hunter Stetson brought to life the animated movie, “Monster House.” While the ensemble of Chris Peisch, Travon Owens, Emmet Wood, Hutson Chaffin, and Bowe Lubin truly delivered in the classic, “To Kill a Mockingbird.” We wrapped up with “Once on this Island,” with a highlight performance from Aicher Heron. However, the runner up for the Tiger Lilly award for the 1st Session is Hutson Chaffin’s debut performance as Scout in “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
and Thomas Lyons steal the show in “Treasure Island.” We closed the season with Dan Lipin’s Big Show, “The Race,” with wonderful performances from Matt Johnson, Will Napper, JT Cochrane, Will Churchill, and LJ Phelan. We’d also like to recognize “Baby D” Smith as a newcomer to the Witherbee stage, with great contributions in both “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “It.” But, the runner up for the second session is David Nelson for his performance in “Treasure Island.” Finally, the winner of this year’s Tiger Lilly Award goes to someone who put in effort behind the scenes as a member of the Stage Tech Crew for the past two summers. You might not have seen him on stage, but he dedicated his time and energy to every show in Witherbee Hall in the 2nd Session of the 2019 summer and he exemplified our motto, “the other fellow first,” in all that he did. This year’s Tiger Lilly Award goes to Logan Glass! Thank you Logan for all that you’ve done for Witherbee Hall and helping us create these magical moments in the summer of 2019.
In the second session, we opened with a fright as Ian Kotz played the clown in “It,” which also featured outstanding performances by Will Churchill and Braxton McNulty. The following week we saw Dave Nelson
