Presented at the Final Banquet on August 17, 2018 by Kirsten Anastasio #24814 The Last Whistle Dedication is awarded every summer to a member of the Camp Dudley community whose tenure here is defined by exemplary commitment, enduring faith and ever-present compassion. Without overstating, the Dedication is one of Dudley’s highest honors. It recognizes those who’ve emphatically impacted this century-old institution and thus presses their efforts into this camp’s long and storied history. I am privileged to carry on this tradition, awarding this honor to an individual without whose presence camp would not be the same. Tonight’s honoree is woman of many hats. Whether it be her famous introductions of the Rhythm Ramblers, her noteworthy directorial feats—such as, Stand By Me, Dannie, A Christmas Caroland The Princess Bride—her behind the scenes help in all Saturday and Wednesday Night shows or her impeccably posh British accent, this person has seamlessly woven herself into the Dudley fabric. Simply put, she is among the many hard-working and talented Witherbee staff who’ve kindled the Dudley magic day in and day out. Hailing from Hillingdon, England, this person first arrived in Westport, NY in 2000. That first summer some have described her as timid, perhaps taken aback by camp’s intense and boisterous traditions. I’m sure many of you can relate to this, as I certainly can. But it was not long in this person’s first summer working in Witherbee that her creative spirt shone through. Mark ‘Davo’ Davenport recounts that she effortlessly created onstage characters that “left us in stitches every week.” In her early years, this was best exemplified by her Wednesday Night Show MC persona, Bobby, improvising lines such as: “I love that word Ticonderoga because it has ‘Ti’ ‘Con’ and “Deroga” in the same word!”

In the following years, her ability to enrapture a crowd went unwavered. Most notably, she rocked the Witherbee stage in roles such as: the British Nanny in Davo’s Big Show and Petula Clarke, singing ‘Downtown’. As Davo explains, “whenever I ask her to do anything in a show, she does it immediately and head on.” According to many, this sentiment rings true in all that this individual does for the community. To many, this person is considered one of the best directors they’ve ever worked with. Owing largely to her theatrical training, this person is a ‘consummate professional’ and a ‘dramaturge’ in all senses of the word. In addition to this, many Dudley directors have admired a quality in this individual unlike others of her field. James Mayo understands this as her unique ability to tinge her professionalism with sensitivity and compassion. She, as Mayo notes, “does what is best for the institution by valuing constructive feedback and self-reflection.”

This attitude is upheld during her own productions as well as those of other directors. That is, she places far greater value on the production, and the positive experiences of others, than personal validation. Through this, she has reinvigorated Dudley’s drama department to showcase the abundant talent found here. Despite being an incredible talent, this person has put her efforts towards fostering an increasingly inclusive space for all things performance-related. Frequently do I find her encouraging nervous campers and leaders to audition for Saturday Night Shows, discovering talent during karaoke team times and supporting directors through the inevitable showcase stresses. Keeping with this mindset, she puts all efforts into the task at hand; “Nothing is half way,” fellow Witherbee staff member Amanda Hinge stressed to me. In our conversation, Amanda continued on to list all of the many tasks this individual fulfills on an average day and I was absolutely awestruck. It is one thing to work around the clock and it is another to do so with positivity, love and absolute selflessness. To Amanda, and to many, she is indispensable.
Her close friend Justin Noel described her as: “One who is filled with kindness, thoughtfulness and innate caring for others…[She] inspires all who know her to become the very best person we can be.” This kindness permeates her whole being. Her smile is said to light up a room; her chuckle inspires others to laugh too. And so unsurprisingly, she is vastly regarded as a confidant, a shoulder to lean on and an undeniable camp figurehead. Dudley is what it is not simply for its architecture or landscape, but for the positivity and love exuded from the people within its confines. This person encapsulates the latter, acting in the spirit of ‘the other fellow first’ in all that she does. It is my honor and privilege to award the 2018 Last Whistle Dedication to my role model and friend: #18079, Diana McGuigan George.

The Last Whistle is an album of sorts comprised of hundreds of photos on 165 pages, bound by cotton thread and a plastic mesh covering. It is also a collection of memories experienced over the course of eight wonderful weeks by campers, leadership, staff members and all who inhabit the Dudley space. Ideally, this book will serve as reminder of the summer you had—the one you performed on the Witherbee stage, hiked through the scenic Adirondacks, challenged yourself in some way or simply found a moment to let go and be happy. It is my privilege to help you all enhance your best memories of the summer, or perhaps to remind you of ones you’ve forgotten amid the many.

When I was not working with the Pubs department gathering photos and videos for the weekly slide shows, brainstorming ridiculous skits with the hilarious Aidan Moran or soaking in the beauty of Westport, I was in the back office nook of Witherbee compiling the Last Whistle as you see it here. That is not to say that this book was a product of my efforts alone. Rather, it was a collective effort of the entire Dudley community, a fact I can’t stress enough.
To the Matt and Evan, thank you for making my and everyone’s summers possible. You are the glue that holds the moving pieces of this camp together.
To the campers and leaders who’ve knowingly or unknowingly posed for every photo taken over the summer, thank you. Thank you for your smiles, your creativity and willingness to express your unique and awesome selves. Your vibrancy colors each and every one of these pages. Well, there goes another summer. I hope it was as good for you as it was for me. While every year is different and comes with its own unique joys, my time here this season has been exceptionally strange in a fantastic way. My job is essentially to make you laugh and smile. My other job is to take pictures of you laughing and smiling. It’s great. The best. Having said that, it’s been different. I’ve seen camp from a new perspective this year - more removed than in years past.
the lacrosse field for the first time. He looked to see where his teammates were standing and how they were holding their sticks. Since it’s pretty obvious how they’re meant to be held he learned nothing new. So John stood, baking in his sweaty communal lacrosse gear, staring out across the hell fields. He thought about the plants that look like corndogs and whether or not they would go well with mustard. And he prayed that the ball wouldn’t come near him. The ball came near him. John played for half the game and he hated it. Then he played another game. And he hated it. Then he played another game. And he hated it.
It’s difficult for me to imagine my life without Dudley. Maybe some of you (or most of you) haven’t quite developed the same attachment to this place - and to these people - yet. But looking around campus I see the same sights I saw ten years ago through a fresh set of eyes. And the same smells… oh boy do some of you guys smell bad. There was no MOP ten years ago. Then he played another game. And he decided to go And the kid didn’t have spunk. And the people were towards the ball. enough that only you can hear (but little did you know right along the rim. It’s all in the wrist, really.), and how to throw an air bounce, and a couple other fun ways to throw everyone else in the cabin can hear it too). that thing. Anyway, it was great - I had a blast.
When Will’s parents come to pick him up, they’ll have heard twenty letters worth of what seems to be describing torture, but Will can’t wait to come back next summer. So they pack up their flying car and they fly to their home in the countryside of Mars where Will asks them to sign him up for another year at Camp Dudley. My Plebe year I became engrossed with ultimate frisbee. Well, not ultimate necessarily, I just liked throwing frisbees really far. I practiced every day with my cabin mate Phillip. We would see how many throws we could make to each other without having to move to catch the frisbee. After each successful throw we would take a step back, and after each failure we would come back to where we started. By the next year I was pretty good at frisbee. My Plebe D-head, Sam Routhier, was the captain of the Dartmouth ultimate team and an all-around awesome guy. He had quick wit and he could throw a frisbee from the steps of Beckman to the door of the plebe tute. The frisbee looked so graceful - the way it spun so smoothly and elegantly. No wobble. Hitting the door of the plebe tute was a whole lot easier without the MOP in the way, but it was still by no means easy. My Junior D-head was - once again - Sam Routhier. He taught me a few fancy ways to throw a frisbee that year. I was already proficient in forehanded and backhanded throws. Sam taught me how to throw a hammer, but I never really got the hang of that one. He taught me how to throw an air bounce (and I nailed it, and I was real full of myself). He taught me the bowler, and how to throw multiple frisbees at once, and other ridiculous things to do with a frisbee. And we threw back and forth between Witherbee and Andrews for a whole choice time once, and I felt like I was the coolest kid at camp. I had been able to get some one-on-one time with my D-head (and everyone knows D-heads are the coolest, funniest, most important guys at camp. And thus - by proxy...), two years running. A few years later Sam came back to visit camp. I went up to say hi - I was very excited to see him again. He didn’t know who I was. As a leader, you see a lot of faces here at camp. Some of those faces flit in and out of your vision and your consciousness, whether you want to see them or not. Sometimes when I close my eyes I’ll see those faces like a slideshow. And sometimes I forget faces. And sometimes I forget names. A couple years ago, I spent a choice time throwing a frisbee with a camper. I taught him how to throw forehand (you have to put two fingers along the inside of the disk,
I saw that kid the next year and he excitedly ran up to me to say hi Aidan, and I said hey - and that’s it - because I forgot his name. I want to tell you now that I know you, but I don’t know your name and I’m sorry for that. AL year, my leader Monkey Man took our cabin to watch the sunrise on the last day of camp. From north point, there was an unobscured view of the lake, the mountains, and the distant clouds illuminated by the morning light. Iridescent, resplendent, etc. It was beautiful. The smell of the pines and the way the horizontal light of 6:00 am wove through the trees... It was an ideal and romantic way to end the year as a cabin. My second year as a leader (in Syracuse), I lead the entire Cub Division to watch the sunrise at North Point. It was too cloudy. We woke up the Seniors as we walked by. Everyone hated it. When I was asked why I love Camp Dudley, I thought of all the time I’ve spent here. I thought of my cub year in Syracuse and eating ice cream with Jack Mango. I thought of my time as a leader in that same cabin ten years later and the card party on the last night of the summer. I thought of picking spears of grass while slam poetry echoed across the grounds of Mellowfest. I love Syracuse, and I love Jack Mango, and I love card parties and picking at spears of grass. I love the 200m gauntlet that is the swim test, and I love being caked in dirt after slipping on the bank of a river. I love sweat-stained communal lacrosse gear on the Upper Fields. I love the man that Dudley made me. I love you because you are Camp Dudley. I am Camp Dudley. We are Camp Dudley. And we are different but the same.

IAN MOOK
Good morning Camp Dudley. My name is Ian Mook, and I have the privilege of being the leader in Ross Cabin this summer. That’s right, I said Mook, not Muuk. And that’s kind of the topic of my chapel talk this morning. To foreground, I first need to share a bit about myself. I grew up in Sleepy Hollow, NY. I lived about 5 minutes from both sets of grandparents, in the house my grandfather grew up in and went to the same school as my older brother from kindergarten through twelfth grade, the same school at which my mother was a teacher and my grandfather had once attended. I guess we were one of those families who found a home and decided to keep it that way for a few generations. It’s safe to say that everyone in my community knew my last name was pronounced Mook. What I mean by this is that basically everywhere I went growing up; people knew me− or they thought they knew me. Everyone knew my last name was pronounced Mook. Everyone knew that I was the younger brother of the brilliant Conor Mook, the son of the infectiously kind Suzy Akin, and the descendants of Jeffrey and Kent Mook – always the loudest cheerers on the sidelines of my local sports games. Everyone knew my last name was pronounced Mook. So then I came to camp Dudley in the summer of 2009, a shy and sheltered rising 8th grader. I was a junior in Dartmouth lodge. I arrived at camp, got settled in, said goodbye to my dad, and the next thing I know I was playing laundry lax on main campus and my cabin mate, T.J., says, “Hey Muuk, pass me the ball.” So guess what I said? …….. Nothing! I just passed him the ball because I was terrible at lacrosse and wanted the burden of carrying the ball off my shoulders. Soon enough, everyone is calling me Muuk or Mookie and there’s not much I can do about it – and I actually kind of liked it. I realized that I was in a new community, a community that was totally knew to me and where I was totally knew to it, and it was awesome.
because adolescence is a period characterized by intense personal growth. It is defined by identity exploration and creation. When I first arrived at Dudley, I was in the early stages of my own adolescence. And up until then, in my community where every single person I came into contact with thought they knew me or my family and, in short, they knew that my name was pronounced Mook, I found it extremely difficult to explore new identities and help cultivate my own sense of self. When I came to Dudley, and everyone just started calling me Muuk, in this nickname, I found relief, I found opportunity, and I started finding myself. The reason I share this with you is that camp can be that opportunity for you as well. Even if you are a third, fourth, or even fifth generation camper at Dudley, there will always be opportunities here for you to explore the person you want to be. So for those of you that are new, and for those of you that are returning, keep exploring, try new things. Find out what you like, find out what you don’t like, and reflect on why you felt that way. You are doing the most important work of your life at this very moment. Know that nothing is ever set in stone and we are always changing, even those of us in our “post-adolescence” phase. Every unknown, every fear or potential anxiety represents your greatest opportunity for growth and personal exploration. Lean in to your anxieties and embrace those new opportunities – they are ever-present here at camp. Be courageous in the face of the daunting task of becoming the person that you want to be. Thank you.
So a quick tangent: researchers have roughly identified the age group of 10-25 year olds to be what we call adolescents. Meaning that if you are roughly between the ages of 10 and 25, you are, in one form or another, an adolescent. Think about that, that’s basically everyone sitting down in Beckman right now and probably about 90% of the people at camp. I share this fact

winter activity that seemed to be a perfect fit.
My name is John Hall. And when you look at me I know what you think. Above average. But you’re wrong. According to both my SAT and ACT scores I am very much below average. But to fully understand this let’s rewind. It was my junior year of high school and I decided that it was time for me to spread my wings and fly. What I mean by this is that I decided to follow my true passion. Basketball. The varsity basketball tryouts were in a few days and this was my opportunity. Disclaimer: I attended a boarding school that heavily recruited for its basketball program, so I knew this would be interesting to say the least. The day of varsity basketball tryouts had arrived and it was time to make my presence known. I fished out my compression shorts from my dirty laundry hamper, transformed a t-shirt into a cut off, and threw on my crisp white asic sneakers. I even borrowed my roommates Beats studio headphones for good measurement. Walking to the basketball court from my dorm all I could think about was my signature fade away, and how that would separate me from the others. I think I made it a total of 10 steps through the gym doors before the head coach walked up to me and politely asked me to leave the tryouts. Let’s just say that I was the only 5’8 red head kid wearing asics there. So I took up the coach’s proposition and left. But there was light at the end of the tunnel. The JV tryouts were the next day. I went to bed early that night so I’d be game for JV. I made it one day into the JV tryouts before I got pushed down to the JV2 team. But unfortunately this tale does not end here. I was sure there was a spot for me on the JV2 squad. But after about five turn overs and a handful of missed 3 pointers in the first scrimmage game, I shortly received an email from the JV2 coach informing me that I had been cut from JV2. I was in pure denial. This couldn’t be. Don’t get me wrong, I thought this was hilarious, but all I could think about was that I literally just got cut from JV2 basketball. I needed a winter activity for the semester and my basketball plans fell through. But this is not at all a sad story. I was able to find a
Spinning. There were twenty others in the spinning class and I was the only guy. After each spinning class I began to feel more and more comfortable with my new teammates. I don’t think there’s such thing as teammates in a spinning class, but it made me feel better to refer to them as that. Once the winter semester gradually came to a close, and my final spinning class came and went. I couldn’t have been happier with where I ended up. Sure I may have not ended up on a basketball team, but that didn’t matter. My teammates and I tore it up in spinning. We went undefeated. We kicked butt and took names. Now, how does this experience of mine relate to camp? Here at Dudley we all have opportunities to shine in different ways. You may not be on the A squad for basketball, be the star on the soccer field, or even like sports at all. But none of that matters. you may not be perfect at one thing, but that doesn’t mean you can’t excel in another. So here’s my challenge to all of you. Utilize your time at camp. Dive into everything head first and don’t think twice about it. Not everyone is perfect at everything, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be good at something. Everyone has their niche, and it’s up to you to find it. Let us pray. The most important thing is to enjoy your life – to be happy – its all that matters Amen.

I want you to be more excited for the last day of camp than you were for the first. I want you to be more excited to be going back to your hometown than leaving it for Westport. I want you to be even more excited to go back to school than you were to be on this campus. I know I sound crazy, and maybe I am, but hear me out. Camp Dudley is amazing: the mountains, the lakes, the sports, the chants, the extravaganzas. I fell in love with all of it. But one thing that I believe is this: I am not here for camp, camp is here for me. That is even truer for all of you. YOU make the sports competitive, YOU make the chants loud, YOU make the vespers meaningful, YOUR excitement lights up this place more than the Dudley Dome at night. It is each and every one of you that makes Dudley the camp it is. So I hope you listen to my advice. If you are Dudley, then why does this experience have to stop at Westport!?! Bring Dudley home. Dudley is inside of you; it is what you make it. So show off the new games you learned with your friends at home, wear your Dudley gear proudly to school, teach your family a hymn or two and, most importantly, show the world what it means to put the other fellow first. I want you to show everyone back home what a different person you are, what leadership skills you gained, what interests you discovered, what challenges you conquered and what goals you achieved. And if you can’t think of anything, if you don’t think you will be going home a changed person, guess what? You have one more week to prove yourself wrong, one more week to strive for those goals, one more week to express yourself, one more week to conquer your fears, one more week to release the real you—the great you, the you we all want to see! You should be excited to go home and tell the world you jumped in Lake Champlain, tell the world you saw galaxies under the Dudley Dome at night, tell the world you made 400 new friends, tell the world you climbed mountains. But most importantly, tell the world that YOU are Camp Dudley.

1885 AWARDS
History of the Award
The 1885’er is awarded to Dudley campers, leaders, and staff following the completion of their fourth summer at Camp. It was started following the addition of Camp Kiniya as a compliment to the “Kiwi Award.” When individuals are presented with the award, they receive an exclusive “1885” Dudley tie to wear on Parents Weekend in recognition of their accomplishment and their dedication to camp.
