- THANK YOU -
Thank you first and foremost to Lefty for your support and guidence through this entire enormous project. You truly understand what a challenging, yet rewarding, undertaking this book is and I greatly appreciate all of your help along the way. Thank you to Reed and Dan for helping me every step of the way throughout the summer; whether it was tag-teaming the seemingly endless cabin photos, shooting a soccer game on the upper fields, or anything in between, you guys never hesitated to help accomplish whatever task needed to be done. To the entire publications team, you guys have been the greatest, most supportive group of people I have ever had the pleasure of working with and I could not have asked for a better, more talented team to have by my side during this entire process. Another huge thank you to everyone that contributed photos throughout the summer, each of you provides a unique perspective and we could not have all the great photos we have without you. And finally, thank you to each and every one of you who was a part of this incredible 130th summer. It is your passion, enthusiasm, excitement, and love that makes Dudley such a special place to us all and it is that energy, and the memories you make every day, that makes this book possible.

-DEDICATION#16404 BLAIR DILS 2014
THE LAST WHISTLE
Presented at the Final Banquet by Drew Rider on August 15, 2014
Awarded every summer at the final banquet, the Last Whistle Dedication is one of the highest honors one can be awarded at Camp Dudley. Each summer, the dedication is awarded to an individual who has shown an exemplary commitment and love towards this place we all cherish, while going above and beyond what is expected of them to make this place even better than it already is. I am privileged to be standing before you now to award this prestigious honor to someone who, just like the esteemed group of recipients who came before him, has had a profound impact on the lives of every person here tonight. Arriving for his first summer back in 1994, this man has returned for twenty-one consecutive summers without skipping a beat. It is very safe to say that not many other people here tonight can claim the same thing. Furthermore, his long Dudley career means he has worked under four different directors, all of whom have greatly valued his commitment, passion, and work ethic towards what he does. When it finally came down to selecting the recipient of the Last Whistle dedication, there was no doubt in my mind that this was the man who deserved to receive this prestigious honor. In fact, he was such an obvious choice to receive the award, that I had to double check to make sure that he had not already gotten it. While I have greatly enjoyed getting to know him during my time as a staff member, and though he has been a part of my Dudley experience since I was a Cub, it really was not until I did the research for this speech that I truly learned how incredible this Dudleyite really is. Echoed by my own interactions with him, every person I talked to had nothing but glowing things to say about this year’s recipient. In the off-season, this Dudleyite works full time as a high school English teacher, a profession he has maintained since he graduated from Bowdoin college in 1990, however his commitment to his school stretches far beyond his role in the classroom. Those who know him in his academic setting have all described him as “so much more than just a teacher.” In addition to English, this man has taught several film electives, while also serving as both an advisor and father figure to many of the students who have passed through his school. But, while he

is excellent at all of these other things that he does, there is one area in particular where he really shines. Coaching. In college, our recipient was a three-season varsity athlete. Three seasons. For most, the time and energy required for just one college sport is too much, so it’s safe to say that it takes a really special and talented individual to commit to three. Since graduation, his passion for sports has never wavered and today, his is a coach of both varsity and club soccer, as well as varsity squash. When talking about this recipient’s passion for coaching,

DEDICATION
When I asked Matt to give one story about this man that truly exemplified what a great Dudley guy he is, he immediately reflected back on his first summer as director. In 2010, then program director Mike Schloat had to leave camp early in the summer because of an injury. Without hesitation, this Dudleyite

Beyond athletics, this man has a great passion for trivia and crosswords, the latter of which he both solves and creates. Always one of the most valuable members of any trivia team, he never ceases to amaze the people around him with his vast knowledge. And, as if he was not interesting enough, for something I bet very few of you knew, our recipient even operates his own blog that very accurately predicts the snow days and delays for the all of the schools in Western Massachusets. His blog has become so popular that it is even cited by various news outlets and weather channels.
stepped up to the plate and took on the challenge. Matt said it was in this time, when they needed it, that this man really displayed what a great guy he was, while also showing Matt and the rest of camp what an important job program director is. This is the type of man our recipient is. He is never afraid to face a challenge and he is always first to help anyone who needs it, all while keeping everyone entertained with his sharp, dry, and witty sense of himor.
THE LAST WHISTLE
our director, Matt Storey, made a point to emphasize several times that this is where he really shines. Whether it be coaching his own teams or running a coaching clinic, it is immediately clear watching this man that this is what he is meant to do. Because of this, it makes sense that he has spent the entirety of his Dudley career as a member of the A-Hut team, the area in which we are all most familiar with him working.
Though our recipient was never actually a camper or a leader, one would never know because of how well he lives the Dudley way and how well he operates by our motto, “the Other Fellow First.” A truly genuine and caring person and a real Dudley guy, this man’s commitment to this place would make anyone believe that he has been coming here since he was a cub. The father of one of our leaders and the brother-in-law of our director, it is my honor to present the Dedication of the 77th Last Whistle to a one-of-a-kind Dudley guy, camper #16404, Blair Dils.

-TIGER LILY AWARDSelected Annually by the Head of Witherbee, with Assistance from the Arts Department Staff
Our first nomination goes to a staff member who is beginning to gain quite the reputation as a thespian: Dave Nelson. Dave’s performance as the eccentric tour guide in this year’s Big Show, Are You There, McGinty?, stole the show... “We’re walking, we’re walking.”
Now, for our runner-up, Malcolm Brown, whose performances were the highlight of this summer’s Leader’s Serial. Each week he portrayed a different female staff member from Adams and each performance was comedic genius, even if many of the women on campus were jealous of his legs!
For the sheer quantity, and quality, of his performances, our second nomination goes to another staff member, Reed Gilbride. Reed performed notably in three shows this summer: Stalag 69, the Sandlot, and, finally, as that lovable Minnesotan in the Big Show.
And now, finally, this year’s TIGER LILY AWARD winner is... the one and only Tony Leonard. Tony’s Wednesday Night Show performances brought the house down each and every time he got on stage, with his good-natured passion for his songs being admired by all. Congratulations and way to go Tony!!!
Our next nomination goes to the comedic duo of Jeff Schwoebel It’s a tough job to narrow down all the talent to just a few and Evan George, for bringing down the house with just a few notables, so we’d like to start by thanking everyone that shared short lines as Carl Dad and Dan Dad in The Putnam County Spelling their talents with us this summer. Getting up on stage is such Bee. an important part of the Dudley experience. It can be a little scary For his years of service to the and it’s always a lot of work, but Dudley stage, this next nomination to everyone that was in a play, in goes to Endy Perry, anchor of the a skit, or who played an instrument WDUD News Cast on Wednesday for us... YOHA! Nights.
2014
This year was also notable for the ensemble performances on stage. Our first group nomination goes to first session Union Cabin, for their hilarious Wednesday Night Show skit: Synchronized Swimming. The second group nomination goes to the boys of The Sandlot, for literally knocking it out of the park by bringing this classic movie to the Dudley stage. And finally, our third group nomination goes to the Plebe Leaders, for their incredibly spot-on impersonations of the varied walking styles on campus.
THE LAST WHISTLE
What an amazing summer it has been on the Witherbee Stage! Amazing productions, amazing music from the Ramblers and the Robotic Funkatrons, and hilarious Wednesday Nights made for a lot of fun in the Hall and at our new outdoor venue: the Middlebury Outdoor Pavilion!
The first show of the second session was The Putnam County Spelling Bee. The full season campers put a lot of work into this one and they really did a fantastic job. Our next nomination, however, goes to Henry Bransford for his role as the very nerdy William Barfée, one of the top contenders for the coveted spelling bee championship, with his magic foot!

This past spring semester, I took my first course in Psychology. It was a broad introductory psych course and it was one of the most interesting classes I’ve taken. The human mind is complicated and we still understand relatively little about how it works. I feel, however, that in just a few months, my psychology professor opened my eyes and the class made me a more understanding, perceptive person. Today, I would like to share with you a psychological concept that constantly impacts my understanding of those around me. I would like you to picture a balloon in the sky. It is drifting upwards. Based on what I have told you, you might quickly assume that the balloon rises because it is filled with helium. But, you’d be ignoring the balloon’s environment. Maybe the balloon is not moved by helium, but by a gust of wind. Before making a sound judgment on the cause of the balloon’s movement, you must consider both internal and external forces. People are the same way. Like a balloon, a person is driven by both internal and external forces. Both a person’s situation and his character affect his behavior. But, psychology tells us that people are not very accurate at distinguishing between the two: between the wind and the helium. Psychologists refer to this as the fundamental attribution error; people are more likely to assume the actions of another are a result of their personality, and not a result of the situation that a person is in. When someone snaps at you, you are more likely to think, “what a jerk!” than to think, “he must be having a rough day.” When someone makes a mistake, you are more likely to think, “he is incapable,” rather than to call yourself mean. We bend the rules and let things slide for ourselves, citing stressful situations and difficult tasks, but are quick to judge others, others who are going through similar situations in their own lives.
72
When you fully grasp this idea, it is pretty eye-opening. People around us are going through the same situations as us and we often forget that. So why do we continue to make this fundamental error? Psychologists haven’t fully figured it out yet, but here are some possible causes: First, blaming a person, rather than his situation, is the easy thing to do. When someone acts out, he is the easy target for blame. Trying to understand his particular situation takes patience and understanding.
CHAPEL TALKS
SPIRITUAL
THE LAST WHISTLE Once you are more aware of this, you will better understand “The Other Fellow First.” When you are able to consider the gusts of wind that you cannot see, you’ll be a lot closer to these guys around you.
2014
Second, you often don’t know another person’s situation. This is unavoidable because we cannot possibly know everything that is going on in the lives of those around us. Keep that in mind. You almost never know the full story. Furthermore, even when you do know a person’s situation, it is very hard to know the effects of a situation on a particular person. Everyone is different. Some are more resilient than others, and some have unusual emotional responses to events in their lives. Now, how does this idea help you at Dudley? You interact with these other several hundred guys all day - on the sports field, at the dining table, in the cabin - and every one of these guys is going through his own experiences. Everyone is in a unique situation, most of it hidden from view. Your tendency, as a human being, is to make quick judgements about a person’s constitution before even considering other forces that might be at play. Push back on this temptation. There will be dozens of opportunities to notice it each day.

THE LAST WHISTLE
Good morning everybody. This morning I want to tell you a story about opening day of 2007. This was an important one for me. It was my official introduction to the leadership ranks at Dudley. Needless to say, I was incredibly nervous. As I retell this story, here’s one of the lessons I hope you can take away: have faith in your own style and take pride in what makes you different. I was an aide in Andrews that summer. Pete Smith was my leader and Chip Whittemore was my AL. I couldn’t have asked for better role models. Pete was the coolest guy in town and Chip was easily the nicest. Both of them were seasoned Dudley guys and I was thrilled to be in their cabin. But, when opening day rolled around, I got downright nervous. I was nervous to fall in the shadow of such great guys. I thought to myself: where do I fit in? I’m not Pete and I’m not Chip... I’m not as experienced as those guys... I’m going to be useless. I quietly prepared the cabin for arriving campers. The clock wasticking and my nervousness wasn’t getting any better. “Well one, but an important one. What role could I play in a cabin led at least none of my guys will show up at exactly 8 o’clock, right? by vets? Well, I certainly couldn’t be Pete and I couldn’t be Chip. But, I COULD be the sunblock guy. I’ve still got some time to work this out...” Or so I thought. Of course, about two minutes later, Tommy Dils walked into Of course, as the summer progressed, my responsibilities got the cabin ready to start his summer. Now I was both unsure of bigger. As more opportunities presented themselves, I realized I myself AND I was responsible for my first camper. I just didn’t was capable of taking on bigger responsibilities. feel ready... I hadn’t built up my own style yet. By the end of the summer, I was no longer JUST the sunblock guy. Meanwhile, Tommy’s mom walked into Andrews with what must I was the sunblock guy who ran inspection. THE LAST WHISTLE
SATURDAY, JUNE 28TH, 2014
Good morning everyone. Good morning Hurd. My name is Will and this morning I want to talk about talking seriously. For anyone who has ever been in my cabin, or who sat through the absurdity that was my chapel talk last year, it should come as no surprise that I am not very good at this. I’ve navigated my way through 22 years of social interactions largely by relying on a deep-rooted ambivalence to things that actually matter, and an incessant joke reflex, usually bad jokes, that I can’t seem to kick. Here is just one of far too many examples: A couple months ago, I discovered that I had made it through the first rounds of the application process for a fellowship at the National Journal, a pretty prestigious political magazine in Washington, D.C. A phone interview was set up with the head of the research division, Jenny, and myself. Things started off great. Her son had just done his first year at a summer camp, so she was pretty impressed with the whole Dudley thing and I began thinking seriously for the first time that I might have to consider doing something other than camp this summer. I, however, needn’t have worried. Towards the end of the interview, she hit me with a pretty softball question: “so, this job is going to require keeping up with a lot of different things at once. Are you good at paying attention to detail?” Any normal person would have reassuringly answered yes, dealing with it as the form question that it was. Being an idiot, I just laughed out loud into the phone. This may seem inexplicable to many of you, and rightly so. But in my head, I thought it was hilarious. Did this Jenny character really expect to get any useful information out of that question? Who in a job interview responds to that with, “nah, detail isn’t really my game. I’m a big picture kind of guy, so can you hire me into this entry level administrative position?” At that point, I probably should have explained my reaction and hoped that Jenny had a similar sense of humor. Instead, after a couple seconds of heavy silence on the other end of the phone, I followed up with, “I mean, yeah,
76
I guess. Totally. Who doesn’t, right?” Needless to say, Jenny went with someone else. For the record, I am doing it again right here. Even in a chapel talk about the importance of talking seriously, I had to front load the meat and potatoes of my message with a stupid story about blowing a job interview. So many layers. But, despite how bad I am at it, I do think that talking seriously with other people is important. Serious conversation requires us to think. It requires us to look within ourselves and take a stance on something that truly matters to us.

100 years ago today, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, of Austria, was assasinated, the first in a series of global events that led to World War I and the fundamental restructuring of modern society. You know what’s crazy about that? Well, aside from the Bolsheviks. What’s crazy is that Dudley had already existed for 30 years at that point.
We are now 130 years old, and the more time I spend here, the more I am convinced that the reason we’ve lasted this long is because of our ability to talk to each other seriously. These days, there aren’t all that many places where this is still true. How many of you walk into class every day, raise your hand, and earnestly state that you think an important part of friendship is living up, yourself, to the high expectatons you have for others?
2014
Indeed, it means admitting that things actually matter to us. Outside of camp, it can be tough to find people willing to talk seriously about something. Me and my best friends from college are some of the most compatible people in the world, and yet, I could name twenty or so people at camp, people that I honestly don’t know nearly as well, who would be more willing to sit down and talk in earnest with me about any subject. In a lot of ways, this is a shame because so much of growing up is about figuring out what you’re going to take seriously. I think this is why, at least for me, Dudley has always been the place I associate with personal growth.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not advocating that we tamp down the humor or stop writing stupid jokes during meal announcements. And, don’t think that I’m contemplating a Blake Harper-esque radical personality change either (yes, that is the second year in a row that I have worked that particular Blake Harper slam into my chapel talk). All I want is for us to take a moment to appreciate the serious conversations we do have at camp. The next time you’re at Vespers or Sunday talks or Chapel, take a moment to wonder how amazing it is in this day and age to have a place where you can express yourself seriously, and to do so with people who will respond in kind.

THE LAST WHISTLE
SATURDAY, AUGUST 16TH, 2014

Good morning Camp Dudley and welcome to your final chapel talk of 2014. My name is Connor Smith, and I am the leader of Upper Suter Cabin. Some of you may be wondering which Connor Smith you’re getting this morning? Is it yoga instructing, alternative lifestyle, quinoa-based, gluten-free, Kambucha harvesting, closet shaman Connor Smith? Or is it insider trading, Lehman Brothers windbreaker, dress socks with running shoes Connor Smith? Today, I am happy to say neither. Today you get to go on a ride with 15 year-old Connor Smith. You see there’s a collective experience that happens every year here that no one ever really talks about, and that is the car ride home on the last day of camp. Departures from this place create a sort of collective Diaspora that has never failed to bring me down, and I hate to say it, but tomorrow you are all about to partake in a collective bummer. And in the winter of 2007, I went through something just like that. After coming off my summer as an Aide in Poly cabin, I spent winter break in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. And as I’m sure our NOLS boys can tell you, there is a certain magic to the setting in Jackson. The Tetons watch over a valley filled with ski bums and crunchy summer folks, and over the last 22 years, I’ve developed order. All of a sudden, my bagel choice drops out of my head a strong bond with my surroundings there. because none other than Dirty Brown himself, Mr. Scott Steen, Were it your average winter vacation, I could have looked and my senior leader is standing there slinging bagels for cash. forward to 2 solid weeks of waist deep powder and face shots. Unfortunately, my sister’s hockey tournament in Vancouver, I don’t remember the conversation entirely, but I imagine it Canada pulled us back to Chicago a week early so she could make was something about sustainability and weird beards. It was a her flight. This meant a grand trek via Chevy Suburban across the welcome surprise on an absolute let-down of a car ride home. There was no one I expected to see less than Steener, and I could U.S., just when I was getting into my rhythm on the slopes. not have been happier that he was there. The point is this, leaving Dudley is only a state of mind, and the world just isn’t that big. No matter how many miles you travel tomorrow in planes, trains, or automobiles, Dudley is still right across the bagel counter. Whether you’re from China, Germany, Ridgewood, or Bronxvville, be some fellow’s Dudley boost this offseason. The moment you realize that is the moment that you allow Dudley to expand beyond the front gates. Dudley exists outside of this place, and you are a part of it. So don’t count the days. Make the days count. On any given day this offseason, someone, somewhere has a camp number and is in need of a boost. Pick up that phone and show them what it feels like to be the Other Fellow for once. Bring Dudley with you, make someone’s day, and it will be that much sweeter when you come back home to the shores of Lake Champlain. There are good ships and wood ships, the ships that sail the sea, but the best ships are friendships, here at the D-U-D.
