What is a great Camp memory you have kept with you over the years?

My sister used to take me sailing at least twice a week. We would spend hours laughing and giggling and laying on the Sunfish. At dinner, my mom, who was the chef, would tell us she could hear us laughing from the dining hall.

What do you wish you could replicate from Camp in your away-from-Camp life?

Adventure! At Camp, I can always try new things. No matter how many years I was at Camp there was literally ALWAYS something new to try or someone new to talk to. The repetition of my boring everyday adult life can feel so mundane. Camp showed me there is always an adventure around the corner! I just have to be brave enough to try it.

What do you remember learning at Camp for the first time?

Archery. I loved it. For me, it was exciting.

What advice would you share with a new camper or firsttime leader starting this summer?

I started going to Camp when I was 15 years old. I did not want to go, but I didn't really have a choice because my mother made me. To this day she and I both agree it was the best choice she ever made for me and my sister. My advice is to come with an open mind! You have no idea the adventure you’re about to take, and that is amazing.

When are you coming back? :)

I come back for a visit every year. I’ll be back full time as soon as Camp needs a librarian!

#17883 KUTAKO KOMEHEKE BALTIMORE, MD

What is a great Camp memory you have kept with you over the years?

One of my greatest Camp memories was during my Aide’s Experience. We had just been dropped off and were going to spend three days in the woods. I hate the woods! Five minutes into the trip, we had to cross a stream and I fell in with all my stuff; my backpack was soaked! My best friend from Camp, John Frankel, gave me his shoes and clothes to wear for the rest of the trip. The essence of “The Other Fellow First” at its best!

What do you wish you could replicate from Camp in your away-from-Camp life?

If Scotty Sly could sing and play guitar at Coachella, I’d be happy!

What do you remember learning at Camp for the first time?

I learned how to play my first gospel song on piano at camp; “He Has Done Marvelous Things.”

What advice would you share with a new camper or firsttime leader starting this summer?

Make the most out of as many experiences as you can, because you’re going to miss it when you’re away

When are you coming back? :)

At the recent Board of Trustees meeting, four new board members and our new CDA Vice President were welcomed to the team. Camp Dudley and Kiniya are incredibly fortunate to have you all supporting our Camps!

Bringing Camp To Your Team Dudley and Kiniya Leader Athletes By #20595 Kat Nelson

There is nothing better than keeping up with our summer community during the year. We do this through our Open House travels, photo sharing, lots of personal communication and, on the best days, going to sporting events! A number of our current Leaders and staff are playing sports at the collegiate level and we make sure to follow along during their seasons.

LEADERSHIP

The moment someone steps foot in Camp, we provide them with opportunities to develop as a leader. Our youngest campers take on roles within their cabin and work to understand the importance of helping others. As campers progress through divisions and on to our leadership program, we stress the importance of different styles of leadership and how various situations call for distinct types of leadership. Recognizing the value each person brings to the table, our goal is to create a staff that includes a variety of leadership approaches.

The same holds true for a team. A team with only one style or one skill will struggle, particularly in challenging situations.

College coaches are looking for leaders who will balance the team’s dynamics. :KHQ\RXKDYH\RXUPRVWFKDOOHQJLQJPRPHQWVRQWKH¿HOGFRDFKHVORRNWR their leaders to step up. CHARACTER

It can be hard to teach character development. Thankfully, sports at Camp provide opportunities for this growth through a focus on sportsmanship and integrity. When a group has developed in these ways they are paving the way to reach the next level. Whether that next level is collectively playing the most cohesive game or supporting each other in a deep and meaningful cabin vesper discussion, it cannot happen without leadership or character. In the cabin, we focus our conversations around being our best selves and putting others before us. We talk WRFDPSHUVDERXWKRZGLI¿FXOWLWFDQEHWRDOZD\VGRWKH right thing even when it is not the popular thing. Revisiting Traditions

With over 100 summers under our belt, Kiniya continues to honor traditions that have been created through the decades making each year memorable and extraordinary. Connecting with our rich history and carrying our experiences from one summer to the next is what makes Camp so timeless.

While the program has adapted and changed over time to meet the needs of each generation of girls, the feeling of community and support instantly brings people back to their time on campus. Any alum can return to Kiniya and reminisce over views of Lake Champlain and girls sitting ‘neath the pines. Throughout the day you’ll see campers out on the water, preparing for the next Saturday Night Show, or competing right on main campus in a heated tennis match! We all know, however, that it’s in the dining hall where Camp truly comes alive as it always has. Our delicious meals are always followed by shouts of Camp songs at the top of our lungs. Our Kiwis are recognized for their four summers of commitment with a celebratory evening each session, and, most importantly, we always "nd time for re#ection and thoughtful discussion at the end of each day. Some of the most special moments of a Kiniya summer are and will continue to be ever present.

Summer 2020 will be full of these traditions and more. As we begin a new decade, perhaps a new tradition will spark!

Revisiting Traditions

One of the most extraordinary aspects of summer at Dudley is that if a camper from any decade of the 20th century were to step back on campus, they would know exactly where they were and would recognize many of the day-today activities that our boys still enjoy. It’s that timelessness that makes camp life unique and, in many ways, connects us more deeply to this place. An a$ernoon dip at Swim Point still refreshes with the bracing waters of Lake Champlain, Sunday evening still rings with the raucous start of Hymn Sing and then lulls us to a sense of quiet and peace as we sing “Now the Day is Over.” The July 4th parade, with local "re departments and Camp’s concert band, is as festive and patriotic as ever. The crack of the bat (even if it is aluminum) still sounds out over baseball games on main campus, and Witherbee Hall still showcases moving and funny performances on Saturday night. Boys hit the hay each night a$er a thoughtful vesper helps draw each day to a close. In the summer of 2020, all these traditions and more will repeat themselves as they have for decades, allowing Dudley to always “live in the hearts of men.”
